From the helm I am writing this newsletter from sunny Fiji! The Pacific Rally is well underway with our first group of 20 yachts now all arrived here and our second group departing Whangārei at the end of June. We have also just announced that registrations are now open for our Sister City rally to Japan in 2o23, and with the NZ Maritime border now (finally!) open, we invite international cruisers to sail South to New Zealand this summer! We hope you can join us on what will be some incredible events! The Pacific Rally participants had a very warm send-off from the team at the Bay of Islands Marina and the Opua Cruising Club, our pre-departure week activities included workshops on sail repairs, bread baking, maintaining your watermaker a BBQ at Burnsco, giveaways from the Bay of Islands Marina and Buoycatcher, lots of social gatherings at the Opua Cruising Club and then completing all the paperwork to depart NZ.
Most of the yachts had a quick 6 day trip north, but the later departures were caught up by some strong winds and waves making the latter part of the passage a bit of a challenge, however everyone arrived safe with only a few minor breakages along the way.
When we arrived in Fiji, there was lots more paperwork to complete and then the arrival parties at Denarau and another in Savusavu with a formal Fijian welcome ceremony, complete with kava, a lovely meal and a band. Our hosts at Denarau Marina, Sails Restaurant, Pacific Energy and the CopraShed Marina have spoiled us and made everyone feel very welcome.
The boats are now all heading off to explore at their own pace, some teaming up with their new friends to explore together, and others branching off doing their own thing, such as surfing and diving. One of the great thing about being on a rally is knowing that you've got backup and support not far away and everyone helps each other out sharing knowledge and experience.
Prior to our departure we had some awesome webinars from experts like Nick & Keryn from PredictWind about getting the IridiumGO all set up and how to get the best out of your offshore weather app. We've also had a webinar on offshore voice communications - SSB Radio, Satellite phones, getting the most out of your VHF too from Peter Mott of Passage Guardian. And an update from Richard Chesher on the gems to explore when sailing in New Caledonia - along with a fantastic discount on his incredible Rocket Guide. We also had a webinar to cover off all the documentation, COVID tests, and mountains of paperwork to complete before leaving NZ and arriving in Fiji. There are lots of things to be aware of.
We were also proud to support the efforts of Days For Girls NZ and Sea Mercy Fiji by helping to transport kits from NZ up to Fiji where they will be distributed to the local community.

Rally to Japan
Konnichi wa and thank you for your interest in the 2023 Rally to Japan. The inaugural Sister Cities Rally to Japan is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sister City relations between Christchurch and Kurashiki and nearly 30 years between Wellington and Sakai City, Osaka. The event is being coordinated by the local sister city committees and is being supported by Island Cruising NZ. Applications are now open and spaces are limited! There is also limited space for moorings in Guam, and so if registrations exceed the number of moorings available, we may look to split the group in to two waves for the Guam stopover.

After the Rally When you arrive in Japan you will be given a 90 day entry visa. Some people are planning on continuing on sailing north and heading over to the Aleutian Islands and on to Alaska. Some are planning on staying and cruising in Japan. Others are planning on sailing home. The choice is yours and the rally will connect you with others who share the same cruising interests and heading in the same direction. You are allowed to leave your vessel in Japan for an extended period without the need to import it.

Safety The safety of the vessel and her crew is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the skipper. A rally is not a race, we will help you prepare for and support you on your voyage, but the decision to set sail or continue is entirely up to the skipper. All vessels are expected to meet the Cat 1 Safety Regulations and be well prepared for the long blue water ocean passages ahead. All vessels will need to have AIS and a means of obtaining emails on passage. We recommend the IridiumGO with PredictWind. Island Cruising members get access to the cruising preparation workshops which give weekly tips on how to prepare your boat to go offshore. The workshops are combined with some excellent discounts from our marine sponsors and there are also webinars you can join and lots of excellent content to help you get ready. If you aren't already a member you can join online for just $95.00 There is lots of content on there that may also be of interest to your crew, as well as discounts on Marine Medic & Sea Survival courses as well. Price The rally registration fee is NZD$2500.00. A deposit of $500.00 will secure your place on the rally. The balance will be due a few months prior to departure. Should COVID disrupt the ability for the rally to run, the rally fee will be transferrable or refundable less recovarable costs. Insurance We are working with a blue water insurance company who will be able to provide a quote for the voyage. We will send you more details on this as they become available. One of our Island Cruising Values is to leave a positive impact on the communities we visit. I am really excited for the Pacific Rally to be supporting the awesome mahi of the teams from Days For Girls and Sea Mercy Fiji. Days for Girls are a team of volunteers based here in New Zealand (and around the world) who make washable, reusable sanitary products for girls. Hi we are Hamish & Nic, and we are dreaming of taking our three kids cruising in the Islands in the near future. As someone who grew up sailing, salt water flows through my blood. I have built up plenty of offshore sailing miles, racing to Fiji and Noumea multiple times, as well as crew in the UK Yacht Racing Academy including multiple Fastnet races. As time has worn on and my family has arrived, my wife Nic and I are dreaming of taking our three kids to the islands for winter. We are looking at options to achieve this dream within the next three years, however being based in Queenstown are having to consider some creative ways to make it happen. Living in Central Otago, it doesn't make a lot of sense to own our own boat yet, but the kids are at the perfect age to go soon so we thought we'd reach out to the cruising community to see if we can broker a deal. Perhaps there's a family who needs help to deliver their yacht one way or the other, in exchange for for some time on their boat in the islands, or possibly another family who aren't planning a trip north but would consider chartering their boat to us for the season, or even someone who might want all the Cat 1 and cruising upgrades completed in return for sharing their boat and helping us bring this dream to life? Hydrovane What do people say about theirs? By Sarah Curry of Hydrovane International Marine
Well, we’ve had the Hydrovane installed now for a couple of months. Unbelievable – what a different world for us. We love it. I mean, we’re absolutely totally impressed with the technology and engineering behind it. Zoe (as we’ve named it) is amazing. So far, she’s steered us 300 to 400 miles. and has done great. It’s just so simple to use, yet the engineering is so complex and robust. I’m sure we’ll do well with her for many many many miles. It took us about two days to get her fully installed. I was able to find some 1-1/2 pvc Schedule 80 electric conduit that was ‘almost’ 2″ outside diameter that we used to dry fit everything. That was absolutely key. In your directions to new purchasers, you should make a bigger thing out of that. Dry fit it first using a mockup. Once that was done, a grinder and cutoff wheel to make all three pipes the exact size. . . . and we were good to go. We’ve got things dialed in pretty good with respect to adjust course underway and all that. I’m sure that in time, this will all become intuitive. It’s interesting to realize and understand the physics behind the wind vane steering. On a beam reach, for example, as the wind increases, so does the ‘apparent wind’ angle. So, we’re learning how to “fiddle” with those adjustments.

50 SHADES OF GREY (WATER) By Glenys Carr Following on from my article on disposing of sewage, this month we take a closer look at grey water or what goes down the drain on board your vessel. Some larger vessels will have clothes and dish washing machines aboard, therefore there will be chemical discharges from their grey water tanks presumably within the same discharge limits as described in the regulations. The substances contained in the cleaners however are a concern for the environment. Dishwasher powders for example are alkaline salt which dissolve grease but are extremely corrosive. Although many laundry powders are now phosphate-free they still contain a myriad of chemicals that we want to keep out of our seas, including surfactants, bleach and brighteners to name a few. Simple hand dishwashing detergents do not completely degrade in seawater, think about that next time you let your sink water go. Most probably you are thinking that yours was a minor contribution but multiply that by the 25 boats you last shared a bay with. Most boats in New Zealand do not capture grey water, it’s flushed straight out of the sink and into the sea where you are anchored or under way. I’m guilty here but I think I’ve managed to keep my impact to a minimum by using an old fashioned soap shaker and sunlight. I’ve seen some online contributors suggest washing dishes in salt water, haven’t tried it myself but it isn’t beyond me. Onboard boat showers, including simple cockpit solar showers can also present pollution issues. Soaps, shampoo and conditioners all draining straight into the bay where you are. Dispersal isn’t gone! I’m not even going to try and describe some of the contents of these products but worryingly some contain plastic particles. Recent focus has been on the sad state of the Hauraki Gulf. Auckland’s and Waikato’s beautiful water playground and food basket is facing collapse. This is a wake-up call for all of us in New Zealand.
We all bear some responsibility for these beautiful places we cruise and enjoy unchecked, let’s up our game and do our small bit to protect them. There are Grade B sewage treatment system, available in New Zealand, check out this option. Bilge water is another culprit, keep your bilge squeaky clean and free from oil or fuel to avoid inadvertently pumping that over the side when you switch on the bilge pump. Sewage and grey water pump out facilities are available at most marinas in New Zealand. If all of us start making some small changes then we can make a big difference to the quality of our ocean water. Here are some ideas to try *Try using unbleached or bamboo derived toilet paper *Read and research product labels for content information *Use minimum toilet paper *Take all toilet and personal wipes off the boat by way of the garbage *Try washing clothes in water only *Try washing dishes in salt water with a quick fresh water rinse *Try showering with water only *Use marina pump out facilities instead of dumping grey or black water in to the ocean. *Be aware of oily water in the bilge - mop it up instead of turning on the bilge pump.
