In 2013 we met with Ronan and Er wan Bouroullec to discuss what would soon become the Copenhague collection. The collection, a series of tables and chairs for the University of Copenhagen, has since led to three other collections with the Bouroullecs. Palissade, a series of outdoor furniture built from steel and designed to improve over time, developed over two years and countless conversations between the Bouroullecs and Rolf Hay. Consequently, Palissade is a measured balance between simplicity and comfort. Likewise the Can sofa collection uses three basic elments to create a sofa that is flat-packed and assembled at home. A frame from steel tubing, upholstered cushions and canvas spanning the structure make for a sofa that is meant to travel easily. Frame, cushion and canvas can be chosen from a limited color palette allowing for customers to infuse their own sensibility into the sofa. The fourth collection Copenhague Deux is an extension of the already existing Copenhague series. With 12 different table and bench sizes the collection is designed for compact spaces and features new laminate technology that is easily cleaned and anti-fingerprint. In the Can sofa, Ronan and Er wan Bouroullec are seeking to go beyond the creation of a practical, elegant and comfortable design. The intention is to reinvigorate the whole idea of the sofa, from something inherently complicated, to something simple, relaxed and for everyone. The sofa comes flat-packed and is assembled at home as we believe people are keen to get things in a quick and simple way, it is better for all resources, it is less transportation, less volume, less stock, it is just much easier to do. The idea of the name Can is that “you can”, “you can make it”, just don’t be afraid. Maybe the sofa will raise the fear “can I do this?”, “is it going to be right?” So, it is implemented into the name itself, just don’t be afraid, it will work.

Palissade is a collection of outdoor furniture designed by Ronan and Er wan Bouroullec for HAY. The collection was designed to fit a wide variety of environments: cafĂŠs, restaurants, gardens, terraces and balconies. The construction allows a wide range of typologies with a common formal language. From stools and benches to chairs and tables, lounge chairs and sofas â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the collection comprises 13 different elements, united not only by their graphical image but also by their common characteristics: they are strong without being bulky, elegant without being fragile.

Copenhague is a furniture series designed especially for the new buildings at the University of Copenhagen. In addition to a homely and welcoming expression, functional furniture qualities such as stackability, durability and ease of cleaning were important design requirements for the university. The Bouroullec brothers approached the task by merging design history with modern technology in an idiom with a strong and independent appearance in a broad and versatile series that embraces both public and private environments.

Copenhague Deux is a new range of tables and benches for compact spaces. The collection offers dining tables, coffee tables and benches in 12 different sizes. The table top surface is made from a new laminate based on Nanotechnology providing an extremely matt surface with a soft touch that is anti-fingerprint and easily cleaned.
