60 YEARS OF MINI. FOREVER UNEXPECTED. AT KLOSTER MINI GARAGE. Everyone has a little bit of unexpected. A spirit that lurks beneath the surface. Behind appearances. Alec Issigonis had it. He was already in his 50s when he threw out the design rule book to create a car in an oil crisis. John Cooper had it. He saw the potential of that car to revolutionise auto racing. And every MINI driver, past and present, has it. For that, we thank them. For 60 years, unexpected has been the DNA of the MINI brand. And MINI’s timeless sense of fun, individualism and creativity will fuel unexpected for years to come. Most things get boring with age. But not MINI. We’re forever unexpected. So, if you’re ready for something unexpected, book a test drive today at Kloster MINI Garage. KLOSTER MINI GARAGE Corner of Tudor Street & Railway Street, Newcastle West, 2303. Strong, sexy, driven and determined, she epitomises my vision of a true Façon woman

Time certainly flies when you’re having fun and as I sit to write my latest editor's letter, I cannot believe four years have passed since I first put pen to paper. What a crazy, exhilarating ride it has been so far. Five short years since I returned home to Newcastle and four years since we first launched Façon at our studio in Wickham. During this time, I have had the privilege of working with some truly inspiring and incredibly talented cover stars and as an editor, this is one of my favourite parts of the job. My team and I put a lot of thought into who will grace our cover and it is important to me that along with being beautiful, on the inside and out, they are also driven, successful and add something to the world we are a part of. This has been my ethos from the very beginning, from our first cover girl, Samantha Wills, one of Australia’s most successful entrepreneurs to today, the talented Ricki-Lee Coulter. To me, Ricki represents feminine strength at its best. She’s fiercely independent, she knows her worth and will accept nothing less, she loves fashion, but she’s not a slave to it and she can certainly flaunt what her mumma gave her. She’s also incredibly loyal to those close to her and her relationship with her husband/manager is one of the strongest partnerships in the industry. Although I have worked with Ricki for many years now, I loved hearing her story come to life in our pages and was impressed by the self-belief and courage she held from such an early age. She is a great example to all of us on never giving up on your dreams. Sure, she’s had her ups and downs, but as she tells it, she’s never taken her foot off the accelerator. She’s proud of who she is and all that she has achieved. Strong, sexy, driven and determined, she epitomises my vision of a true Façon woman and it was an honour shooting her for our summer issue. I hope you enjoy our latest issue.

In between wrapping up her gig as the host of Australia’s Got Talent and just before kicking off her A Star is Born + Greatest Hits national tour, multi-platinum-selling, ARIA award-nominated singer and songwriter Ricki-Lee Coulter travelled north from her home on Sydney’s Northern Beaches to speak to Façon about her dreams of becoming a star, the lessons she learnt along the way and what fame means to her today.

Ricki-Lee Coulter is a straight-shooter. She says what she thinks, and she doesn’t hold back. She’s not ashamed to admit that she doesn’t care much nowada ys wh at peopl e think of her, and she’s more than happy to cut those close to her if they cross the line. If I’m setting the scene for a diva-like cover star, the truth is far from it. In fact, one of the most startling things about the performer is how down to earth she is. She’s unapologeticall y herself, without any airs and graces. Our interview is splattered with obscenities, she’s real and she’s truthful; in fact, one of her opening lines to me is that she doesn’t have an agenda, she’s not going to feed me any lines. But then, she really doesn’t have to. Ricki-Lee has turned her 15 minutes of fame into 15 years of international success and if she’s got anything left to prove, it’s not to us. Having achieved fame thanks to reality television, the Australian Idol alumni pulled off that rare feat of maintaining relevance in a notoriously short-lived, cut-throat industry. In the Insta-era, where fame can be bought through notoriety, Ricki-Lee has proven she has staying power. If her success comes as a surprise to a few naysayers in the industry, it’s of no surprise to Ricki-Lee herself. From the tender age of 12 she had her sights firml y set on stardom and she hasn’t taken her foot of the accelerator since. There have been ups and downs, forks in the road, bridges set fire to and lessons learnt, but still on reflection, Ricki-Lee is hesitant to say she regrets any of it. “I’m proud of everything I’ve done,” she says. “I’ve succeeded and I’ve failed. I’ve done great things and I’ve made massive mistakes, but everything has gotten me to where I am today – which is the happiest I’ve ever been.” 34 |

The perpetual destination for free spirits, surfers, musicians and multimillionaires, Byron Bay has a laidback surf culture that has made it an international hotspot for those chasing the perfect surf break, warm currents, trendy bars, boutique shopping and luxury accommodation. Encapsulating the bohemian nature of the hippies who first made the trek north, Byron Bay has also become a mecca for musical festivals and has found a new generation of revellers seeking self-discovery, good vibes and powerful beats. This Escape is guest edited by Annalise McLachlan, international model, muse and festival queen. Fly Pelican offers direct flights to Byron Bay six days a week for your convenience. where to stay? There are so many beautiful places to stay when visiting Byron Bay, but for me, Byron really represents an escape from reality and for the ultimate beachfront escape I can’t go past Raes at Wategos. The interiors are to die for and surpass even my dreams. I could easily spend the day lying beside the tranquil pool, and the rooms are the epitome of luxury. For a bushescape, The Byron at Byron is a very luxurious, unique stay. Surrounded by Byron’s beautiful bushland, you feel like you are sleeping in nature. Set among lush rainforest, the resort also offers a wonderful spot to truly reconnect with yourself and nature, and I always take the time to wander the gardens and indulge in a deep-healing massage during my stay.

Façon Luxe The Byron at Byron

Where to eat & drink Byron Bay is famous for its live music culture and outdoor venues. You’ll be absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to places to eat and drink, but on every traveller’s bucket list should be a visit to The Beach Hotel. Sit back and enjoy an afternoon drink under the summer sun, share one of their pizzas and listen to a live gig. As the sun sets, head home and get ready for a night on the town. The Loft has amazing cocktails and also a great selection of share plates, including vegan options. The vibe is laid back, light and airy and it’s the perfect place for a relaxed night out. Come morning, clear the head with a swim in the warm crystal-clear water and then head to Folk for brunch. Committed to vegetarian and plant-based eating, it’s my absolute favourite for nourishing, organic food and always offers a welcoming atmosphere.

Where to shop? Byron Bay is home to so many amazing designers and it’s easy to see where they get their inspiration from. Byron is a melting pot of nationalities, all bringing with them their own sense of style and individuality. For amazing home and lifestyle pieces, accessories and clothing I always stop by Hope and May. It has a great selection of swimwear. Pampa has a gorgeous selection of handmade rugs, cushions, throws and accessories. For a completely unique piece, it even offers bespoke rugs. For clothing, Spell and the Gypsy Collective is my alltime favourite boutique. It also has really individual pieces that I incorporate into my festival outfits and my everyday. A visit to their little store is an absolute must, as is Miss Brown Vintage, which is all about ethical clothing, specialising in vintage denim, re-modified vintage and upcycled clothing.

WINE & DINE SEABREEZE HOTEL NELSON BAY

The Newcastle Style Issue |

Faรงon |

59

The Seabreeze Hotel has been a Nelson Bay icon for almost a century, but today she exudes a modern, glammed-up vibe while still maintaining that old-world seaside charm. If the grand-oldmatron of the Bay was a film star, she’d definitely be Jennifer Aniston with her effortless cool-girl style. Having undergone a few nips and tucks in the past two years, the restaurant is light and breezy with a distinctly Hamptons-like vibe. The blue and white stripes and light timbers give a beachy-cool vibe that is fitting with its bayside location. The deck has magnificent views over the marina, and you can hear the soft tinkering of yachts as they bend and sway with the breeze. Along with its hip restaurant makeover, the hotel has also revamped its rooms and now boasts boutique, luxury accommodation with the rooms offering sprawling waterfront views, floor to ceiling glass walls, timber floors and designer finishes. Along with venue renovations, the menu has also undergone a shake-up under the expert lead of head chef, Andrew Macartney. The produce is all locally sourced, creating a true farmer's market experience for diners and the food is exceptional. Fresh and seasonal, the menu offers thoughtful vegan and vegetarians dishes that are contemporary and flavoursome, along with wood-fired pizzas and pub-friendly steaks cooked to perfection. The seaside classics come with a modern twist and the salmon is resplendent. With a tahini & miso dressing, cauliflower, sultanas, pomegranate, pistachio and Danish feta, it’s the perfect dish for a long lunch or a warm, summer evening ($30). Of course, a seafood lunch wouldn’t be complete without a starter plate of freshly shucked Sydney rock oysters with a lemon and shallot dressing ($3.50). For those looking for a lighter option, the vegan vitality superfood salad ($18) is a daintier meal but still big on flavour, with an interesting coconut and turmeric dressing. For those hankering for a tipple, the cocktail menu is a delight. Designed to appeal to a discerning crowd, it is well researched and on trend. Offering hip creations such as their signature Grey Goose Espresso Martini with 22 caret gold dust ($20), it is a sophisticated bar that holds its own with the summer swell of Sydneysiders flocking to the venue. The wine list is also extensive and has been expertly paired to the menu. Appealing to a wide audience, this much loved local hotel h as become something of a mecca for gray nomads as they travel north, a day trip for Novocastrian families over the school holidays and has recently found it’s place in the heart of a hip, new crowd who have discovered a home away from home, where they can float around in their designer kaftans whil e mixing it up with the locals, who are always more than happy to shoot the breeze.

HELEN NICOLA FOUNDER OF AEGEANBLUE & DIRECTOR OF CARLA SWIMWEAR

For nearly six decades Carla Swimwear has remained an institution for lovers of the sun in Newcastle. So if anyone knows swimwear, it's Helen Nicola. She’s lived and breathed it since she was a girl and took over the helm of her family’s four stores from her mother in 2003. Today, as we chat to her in her Mediterranean-inspired home she shares with her husband, Leo, and daughters, Anastasia, Sophia and Christina, she speaks to us about her latest venture, Aegeanblue, and the inspiration behind her new collection. You’re the queen of swim and now you’re moving into jewellery design and resort wear. Can you tell us a bit about this new project and why you took the leap of faith from business woman to designer? It all started with an amazing Greek island holiday and my love of creativity. For years I’ve sampled up styles for my own range, but just never taken the plunge. At Carla Swimwear I make sure our swimmers are amazing quality, fit and style, so to compl ement our swim range, I wanted to design clothing, resort-wear pieces and jewellery that are absolute summer favourites – easy to wear, simple to pack, and look and feel amazing in the long term. Each season I sit with the designers of ma jor Australian brands and give them feedback on how their ranges can improve and evolve so it’s just a natural progression that after almost two decades of helping others grow their ranges, I work on my own. The range also includes beautiful patterned Turkish towels, woven in Turkey and with handy features like a sewn-in pocket to hold your phone and keys, as well as beach bags, visors and hats that all feature our signature Greek e ye h ardware – the Greek e ye symbol is a protector and I love featuring it on each and every piece in the collection. Your jewell ery line is reall y unique and we’ve already spotted quite a few stylish women wearing your collection. Who do you have in mind when designing your pieces and what is your jewellery collection inspired by? My Aegeanblue jewellery is all handmade in Europe from 925 sterling silver and coated in gold or rose gold. It’s really unique styling with inspiration taken from the beautiful cultures and lives lived on the shores of the Aegean Sea with features like the Greek eye, turquoise stones, highpolished crystals and cultural symbolism. The range is so beautifull y unusual but affordable, with the most expensive piece

in the collection at $99. The woman who wears my jewellery is confident in herself and represents her style. She appreciates beauty and buys quality because if she loves it enough to buy it, she wants it to last. She is not trend driven, she is timeless and guided by her own individual style. Your home has a really Mediterranean vibe going. We love it. Have you taken reference from a particular time and place in your life? I love beautiful surroundings and I’m sure my style stems from both my upbringing and my Greek island travels – bright pink bougainvill ea, whitewashed columns, artisan-made tiles and texture everywhere. My mother’s parents came to Australia in the 1920s and 1940s from Greece and as a young girl I l earnt their beautiful v il l a g e wa ys of p ro p a g a t i n g pl an t s , growing their own food, cooking the most amazing dishes and hearing the stories of life in the village. Australia is the most amazing country in the world to live, but I feel like Greece is a part of my story too. Speaking of travel, your husband springs a last-minute resort holiday on you. What’s in your suitcase? This actuall y just happened! We just got back from a couple of weeks overseas and he kept it a surprise from me until the week we left! Wherever I go, my bag is full of kaftans – you can wear them in so many different ways and for different occasions. Perfect for throwing over swimmers for the day or with a slip underneath for cocktails and effortl ess nights out. Along with kaftans, I always pack three or four sets of swimmers – different styles for different activities and days – one of our gorgeous packabl e h ats, my beautiful Savant Apothecary moisturising cream, Sun Bum sunscreen and Sun Bum hair leavein conditioner, Jean Paul Gaultier Scandal perfume – and always a few pairs of blingy slides, perfect footwear for day or night!

Façon Luxe We love resort wear that can take us from the beach or poolside to that cool rooftop bar overlooking the ocean. Any tips or tricks on how to look fresh and stylish after taking a little dip? Aegeanblue kaftans are all designed to take you from beach to bar with that cool Greek island vibe, so team them up with some unique embellished or unusual slides or heels. You can also tuck or tie your kaftans up in different ways to give it your own unique touch – I am always changing the way I wear my kaftans to keep the look fresh and different. Get in front of a mirror and be inventive! Choose pieces in natural fibres – silk, cotton or silk blends, they flow and drape nicely. Embrace your salty beach hair and spritz it with leave-in conditioner (I love Sun Bum 3 in 1) and give it a scrunch up for volume. A pair of gorgeous earrings, an anklet or a wrist adorned with a bracelet will finish off the look.

The woman who wears my jewellery is confident in herself and represents her style. You must have picked up some amazing treasures in your travels. What is your most cherished item and why? I onl y ever buy pieces overseas if I fall in love with them – they have to be completely unique and something I wouldn’t see again back home. I love homewares and most recently bought back a small gold and bronze handmade olive tree in Athens to add to my collection. On our last trip to Cyprus my husband bought me a stunning ring that I’ll treasure forever. My favourite things are the ones that make me remember the beautiful moments even the gorgeous rocks I keep on my sideboard were all collected on an amazing day at Aphrodite’s Rock on our way to the Blue Lagoon in Cyprus. 78 |

EXPERIENCE GIRL'S DAY OUT

Façon Luxe What better way to end the year or start 2020 afresh than with a girls’ day out? While life can seem all too busy at times, it’s important to remember the value of good friends. In the words of the iconic Carrie Bradshaw: they say nothing lasts forever; dreams change, trends come and go, but friendships never go out of style. With this in mind, embrace the opportunity to take a day off and splurge on a new outfit with a spot of shopping along boutique mecca, Darby Street. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to updating your wardrobe or finding the perfect party piece, and who better to assist than your best girlfriend – she’ll always be kind, honest and she knows you best. As midday approaches, enjoy a long lunch as you people-watch at trendy hotspot, Susuru. We recommend a few of their delicious gyoza plates paired with some super fresh sides and an authentic chilled green tea to have you in the mood for an indulgent afternoon of pampering. Nestl ed down a tranquil all ey off King Street is Endota Spa. Inspired by nature, one feels as though they have stumbled across an oasis in the middle of the city and after a busy morning, it is the perfect place to relax and replenish. Our treatment today is the Girls’ Day Out package, consisting of the signature organic infusion facial, an organic relaxation full-body massage and a billabong foot bath. For those looking for a blissful escape, the organic relaxation massage is heaven with the jade stones massage technique anchoring you to the earth. The mind very quickly drifts to a sl eepy state, aided by the Endota Signature Blend essential oils and firm pressure of the massage. As you are slowly brought back to reality, the organic infusion facial begins, bringing a much-needed hydration boost to your complexion. Balancing natural oils, wild orange and native botanicals, the facial is designed to leave your skin feeling smooth and looking radiant, using jade facial rollers infused with signature oils, tailored to suit your individual skin type and condition. This may include powerful antioxidants for boosting radiance, rich multivitamins to deeply hydrate and nourish, and omega oils to replenish moisture and strengthen skin elasticity. As your Girls’ Day Out comes to a serene end, take one last moment in the relaxation lounge to recuperate, rehydrate and cherish your company. Your girls’ day out may onl y occur once every blue moon, but when it does, it will be a day to remember and an essential tool in being the best version of you. As you bid au revoir to your bestie and head home to your respective homes and lives, feel radiant and ready to take on the world again. Endota Spa offers a Girl 's Day Out package for $240 per person. Visit Endota Spa Newcastle for details.

Makeup Artist Stevi Hopkins talks us through this season’s palette of sorbet shades and how to achieve that perfect summer glow.

With a strong focus on creamy, luminous skin, I went with a peaches and cream palette and created a point of difference with the placement of products. I used cream illuminators to maintain the skin's radiance and focused on hydrating skin products to keep the skin plump and glowing. I swept “Just a Pinch” Extra Dimension Blush by MAC on the cheeks, eyes and onto the temples, I even applied a small amount to the lips to keep the colours uniformed and finished with a hydrating lip balm. 96 |

I introduced some warm amber tones into this look and kept the cheeks subtle with a wash of colour and beautiful radiance. For the lips, I highlighted the cupid's bow with a cream illuminator and applied a liquid matte lipstick to the centre of the lips only and diffused with a fluffy brush. I topped with a small amount of gloss to the centre of the lips to add dimension. I then used a small amount of the same liquid matte lipstick towards the front of the eye to create a diffused pop of pink. The Newcastle Style Issue |

I wanted a strong monochromatic palette for this look with added drama using glossy textures. I used a variety of burnt orange eyeshadows and blushes and kept the touch of pink under the eye brow for a subtle contrast. I applied a bright coral liquid lipstick for a bold shape and then topped with loads of gloss for a glass-like effect on the lips. 98 |

I actually used a purple lipstick into the eye for opaque colour payoff, with a creamy finish. I focused on warmth and radiance in the skin and let the purple be the standout. I dusted a small amount of concealer over the lips to neutralise the colour and topped with a lip balm for a soft hydrated look. The Newcastle Style Issue |

Façon Beauté Long summer days spent under the sun may be good for the soul, but not so for our skin. In anticipation of the warmer months we spoke with dermal therapist Alicia Green from Renew Medispa about the most common skin complaints over summer, the best way to counteract sun damage and how to get that perfect party glow for the celebratory season. Façon: What is the most common skin concern over the summer months? Alicia: People really notice pigment during the summer as sunlight triggers melanin in the skin. We generally don’t recommend trying to treat this over summer as the laser that targets pigment requires sun avoidance. So the focus over summer should be prevention by limiting sun exposure and then looking at treatment in autumn or winter. Façon: How do we achieve that perfect party glow? Alicia: Light laser treatments are perfect as there is no downtime. Our laser glow facials requires zero downtime and can be done right before your event. This treatment not only increases collagen and elast in production in the weeks and months ahead, but also gives an immediate plumping effect that leaves you glowing. Façon: What at-home treatments do you recommend? Alicia: At-home skincare is really important. Ensure you are using a good cleanser and remove your makeup even after a night out. I love the Aspect Dr Deep Clean cleanser to remove makeup and give your skin a gentle exfoliation to remove dead skin cells, keeping the skin fresh. If you want to keep your skin glowing and take your skincare regime to the next level, then using highly active serums is for you. Serums contain the most potent dose of anti-ageing ingredients and keep the skin looking fresh and dewy. I love Cosmedix Define, a vitamin A-based serum and Aspect Dr Active C Serum. Façon: What are your top commandments for summer skin? Alicia: Number one – protect your skin from the sun. Sun exposure contributes to 90 per cent of skin ageing and no one likes pigmentation and wrinkles. Wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen daily is a must to reduce skin ageing and pigmentation. A great lightweight, water-resistant sunscreen is the Aspect Sun Envirostat Face SPF50. Follow a nightly skin care routine, including cleansing and use of higher-strength serums. If you then want to add a little laser or LED light treatment to your regime, there are options that will give you a glow that are safe, even in summer. 100 |

James Burrows aka The Blonde Boy shares his top 3 products to protect your hair this summer. Between the sun, sea and sand, your hair gets a rough deal in the hot weather. There are a lot of myths about what you should do, but one thing that is certain is you need to take steps before and after a day in the sun to keep your hair looking healthy.

Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil This sublime oil is ideal for beach babes who love getting their hair wet and salty. Apply before diving in. Olaplex No.7 is a highly concentrated, weightless reparative styling oil that dramatically increases shine, softness, and colour vibrancy. It also helps minimise those pesky fly-aways and frizz. I recommend massaging a good amount of the oil through your hair as this will protect the cuticle and reduce salt and chlorine damage.

Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil 30mL — RRP $49.95, available at exclusive salons and boutiques across Australia

Balmain Paris Sun Protection Spray This is for the ladies who like to bathe in sunlight not the sea. Balmain Sun Protection features UVA and UVB filters to nourish and condition summer-exposed hair. The lightweight formula helps to prevent colour fading and keratin damage, while enhancing shine and promoting strong, healthy-looking locks from root to tip. Hair is protected, hydrated and conditioned. Treat the spray like sunscreen: apply and reapply often to towel dry or dry hair. Do not rinse out.

Balmain Paris Sun Protection Spray — RRP $56.00, available at exclusive salons and boutiques across Australia

Khairpep Masque Khairpep is the newest kid on the block and it is ideal for those who have spent a day in the sun. It features peptide, which is formulated to shuttle amino acids — the building blocks of hair — into the inner structure of the hair. It works differently to a plex treatment in that once you use it intensely over three leave-in treatments and have repaired the hair, there is no need to continue using it. After shampooing, use Khairpep in place of your conditioner and do not rinse. Comb the product through gently and let the magic happen. Wait five minutes and then you can style by simply adding product over the top.

Khairpep Masque — RRP $35.00, available at exclusive salons and boutiques across Australia
