Anne Long

CEO of Greater Charitable Foundation

W

hen Anne Long reflects on her decade as CEO of Greater Charitable Foundation there is one word that is constantly mentioned – pride.

This month, the Hunter-based foundation is celebrating two important milestones: 10 years of operation and $10million in funding support, which brings great pride, not only to her but the entire organisation. For more than 75 years, Greater Bank, or Greater Building Society as it was known prior to 2016, has a long history of supporting the communities in which it operates. It was a desire to formalise this process in 2010 that provided the catalyst for establishing a new foundation. After spending the previous two years setting up nib foundation, prior to which she was the regional marketing manager for Mission Australia, Anne was approached by then CEO, Don Magin, to share her experiences on the philanthropic sector and how they could bring the idea of a foundation to life.

“From my first meeting there was a great sense of authenticity around what they wanted to achieve. The prospect of working with a new board to help them shape their vision for a new foundation was very appealing.”

Achieving goals through the amazing work within the community “Our charter when we launched in 2011, put very simply, was to make a significant difference to the lives of people in the areas where we live and work, and the board committed to provide $1 million annually to support this vision. “While our charter has evolved over the years to align with changes in community needs, these foundations have remained constant. Today, we do this through the lens of financial wellbeing, but in essence, the programs and partners we support still facilitate changes in life outcomes of beneficiaries.”

Anne has long regarded her role heading up the Bank’s Foundation as a privileged position, overseeing the community and social investment of the organisation.

“Together with our Board, we have this wonderful opportunity to make decisions around funding allocation, then work with our partners to help them achieve their goals through the amazing work they undertake in the community.”

Harry Meyn Foundation 21 Façon | Façon | 21

“Knowing that our decisions are for the betterment of the community is what drives me every day and something that I am incredibly proud of.” Greater Charitable Foundation has partnered with 31 charitable groups over the past 10 years, who have delivered a diverse range of programs, including support for cancer patients and their families, educational support for sick children, family respite services and medical research. Collectively, these programs have directly impacted the lives of more than 32,000 people. Asking Anne to select a particular partnership that stood out is a tough request; however, when pressed on the question, there was one that had a real impact. In 2015, the foundation partnered with Raise Foundation to conduct a support program for young pregnant and parenting girls aged between 13 and 23 in the Hunter and Central Coast regions.

“We had this disadvantaged group in our community, pregnant young women or young mothers, who needed hope but also an opportunity to succeed. History showed that unless we played a role in breaking the cycle there would be a high likelihood of ongoing, intergenerational disadvantage.” 22 |

There is no doubt that, for Anne, working in the philanthropic sector for the past 20 years has been the highlight of her professional life. “When you know you are making a difference every day, it brings such a positive outlook to your working life, which is a wonderful feeling,” she said

I love how music and fashion intertwine.

I

just don’t know how it all comes together, but it does: Façon Issue 12.

Sometimes my job is wonderful, sometimes it’s very demanding and trying! But overall, I’m one of the lucky ones who can say I truly love my job. This issue had its challenges once again, with COVID 2.0 throwing challenges again at our publication. Our shoots were held up and we had to squeeze it all in to get everything done on time. The production team scrambled to get the shoots organised and the creative teams booked (a feat in itself). I got my creative brain into gear to come up with ideas for the shoots, and the copywriters put pen to paper and came up with some great reading material. But sometimes I think this is how I/we work best. My wonderful team is so good at what they do and how they do it! I always say to them that other magazines have a team of 30 to publish an issue and we have a very small, bespoke team of six to do what we do, and that is publish a 200+ page magazine (give or take a few amazing interns to help us along on our way). I’m very excited about this issue, Summer of Music. Music is my second love to fashion (or dare I say equal love?). My husband was a professional musician for many years and now a retired rock star; he always has music playing in our house and our children both play instruments, so it's a big part of our life. The fashion industry was hit very hard by the situation in our world over the past few years and so too has the music industry, so when the team and I discussed what we wanted the theme of this

issue to be, it was an easy decision. We wanted to support the Australian music industry and shine a light on our talent, to help reignite the importance of music in our world and support our musicians. I love how music and fashion intertwine and that is why I chose to pay homage to the music industry for our summer issue this year. I love how so many people who love music also love fashion and vice versa, and this helped us weave a thread of music into each fashion and beauty shoot we did for this issue. I am most excited about our cover star, the gorgeous Vera Blue. A talented artist who is an absolute pleasure not only to listen to but shooting her in our own local area, the Worimi Barray, was a joy. We had such a special day as you will see when you flick to the cover shoot pages. We are lucky to live in and have access to such a phenomenal landscape! As Christmas and holidays approach, I hope you and your families can be together and enjoy each other's company. Here’s to a fabulous 2022! I cannot thank you enough for continuing to support Façon Magazine Australia.

BOTH SIDES NOW

A humble Aussie girl at heart, and a burgeoning international superstar.. introducing Celia Pavey AKA Vera Blue WRITTEN BY LUKA FORMAN

"

PERFORMANCE THAT’S WHEN I FEEL VERA BLUE IS REALLY UNLEASHED

Celia Pavey, or Vera Blue as you’d likely know her, has been at the forefront of the Australian Music scene for the past eight years. With two new singles and more coming, Vera Blue is a name you’re going to hear a lot more of in 2022. But what about the woman behind the name Vera Blue?

who is Celia Pavey.

Early in her career, Celia chose Vera Blue as a pseudonymous project name. She’s told the tale of how Vera Blue was born many a time, but Celia is yet to delve into Vera Blue’s actual identity and what makes her tick, until now. So, where does Vera Blue begin, and where does Celia Pavey end?

Unfortunately, it’s 2021 and with lockdown there’s not a lot of rocking out to be done, or Vera Blue to be unleashed. Celia even questioned if Vera Blue could go on.

Turns out things go a touch deeper than you’d think. Vera Blue is more than a fashionable stage name, but rather an esoteric character and section of Celia Pavey’s identity that is expressed through raw sound, style and performance. Vera has developed alongside Celia, changing throughout the years, and she is expressed through the fiery performer that exists inside the humble Australian girl

“Performance – that’s when I feel Vera Blue is really unleashed,” Celia says. “It’s definitely just fun to be able to rock out!”

“Lockdown was so hard: it was just that uncertainty and not knowing what was happening, it was all up in the air,” she said. “That panic of ‘I don’t think I can survive’ really suppressed my creativity – I wasn’t inspired by anything, I couldn’t think, I couldn’t travel, I couldn’t tap into any kind of creativity that would bring on a really great inspirational song.”

“Being out on stage, throwing myself around and letting the music take me is absolute freedom.” Vera’s presence on a stage combined with her electrifying performance fills the atmosphere: Vera Blue is truly a woman to behold, not just in terms of performance, but in fashion as well. Over time she has developed into an Australian fashion icon, and it’s her style and fashion that also forms the essence of Vera Blue. “It’s one of my favourite things,” Celia says about fashion. She also speaks highly of her friend and stylist Jana Bartolo, who helps to shape Vera Blue, both literally and figuratively. “She is phenomenal, she pushes me in directions I’ve never been in before in terms of shapes and colours,” Celia said of Jana, and it’s this that helps make Vera Blue flow and exist with confidence and beauty. “[Fashion] gives me confidence as Vera Blue to feel, do, or perform in any way.” So, style is clearly a big thing for Vera Blue. From the flowy floral dresses, to the elegant blazers, to the punk rock boots and everything in between, there isn’t much she can’t pull off. “I love the glamour and also the punky style,” Celia said, as it’s stylish as hell, but also gives her the freedom to express herself on stage. “I can’t really be wearing heels or be free to spin around and go crazy in heels. So one shoe that Jana puts me in is your classic Doc Martens; it’s so great, I can just stomp around.” While Vera’s style has both form and function, it’s more than just aesthetics and comfort for her. Her fashion and flair comes from deep within; it’s formed by her sound and emotions, and serves as a supplement form of artistic expression alongside her music. She truly wears her inside on the outside. “In terms of relating the music or phase I’m in creatively as Vera Blue, there are always colours,” Celia said. “I go for fashion that relates to the emotions I’m feeling, like for my new single Temper there’s the red and black – emotional and visual representation.” Celia used colour as a chief form of expression long before Vera Blue existed: “In year 12 for my art major I created this artwork that had like, black, blue, red, green, yellow, and every colour depicted an emotion,” she said. “I’m very drawn to colours, and how they make you feel emotionally. I still think there’s that part of me in Vera Blue.” Those powerful emotions and colours fill a lot of her world, performance, style, art, fashion, but most importantly, sound and life. Celia says she also loves to walk around peacefully as totally herself, separate from Vera Blue. “I like having separation, because when I’m at home or when I’m out for a walk, I’m not Vera Blue, I’m not in that creative flow, I can just relax and be myself,” she said about it. But when she needs that creativity and to create that sound, Vera Blue has it covered. Façon |

“When Vera Blue turns on, it’s performance, it’s in the studio,” Celia explained, “it’s a really deep moment where I know exactly what I want to hear, and the sounds I want to create. “There’s a powerful energy in the Vera Blue world.” That powerful energy this time around has been channelled into her new song Temper. For Temper, Vera took on a powerful ’80s pop rock sound, with fuzzy bass that punches you in the face, Phil Collins-esque drums that fill the musical space like gunshots, angelic stacked vocals, and emotionally charged lyrics. “There’s so much energy and so many different emotions,” she said. “The lyrics are from a different place as well, delving into past memories and mental illness. I tapped into past relationships and drew out these emotions of actually having a short fuse, and that’s something I’ve had to suppress to not fuck things up.” Upon experiencing Temper as a song, it’s clear that the suppression has led Vera Blue to a place of extreme expression that she has channelled comprehensively into the release – the single art, title, words, and sound, are all expression. Celia said this benefits her as well: “It actually helps being able to make music about certain emotions, because once you’ve gotten out in music you’re just like, ‘ah, I can finally let that go now’.” This is where it all comes together, the fashion, colours, emotions, sound, Celia Pavey, and Vera Blue: they all play a part in creating the music and the art. And as Celia’s been releasing music since 2013, it seems being Vera Blue has helped her know herself better. “Music makes you see yourself differently, and helps you learn about yourself,” she said. “Music really makes a difference to an artist’s life: they learn things about themselves that they didn’t know.” The comfort in the music isn’t just for her either: “The thing I love about music is that it’s not only for me; hopefully it will help other people, even if it’s just relating to it,” she said. Vera Blue is truly an exceptional artist. Celia has turned a part of herself that exists in a wonderful space of creativity, art, music, fashion and expression into Vera Blue. The past year has been tough on everyone, but now there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, Celia is looking to get on the road again, with a new appreciation for herself and her music. “It’s been a very special bonding experience with music, I think.” We know the name, we know the woman, we know the art – get ready to hear more of Vera Blue, as she prepares to hit the stage this summer, with more music coming soon. Newcastle, Australia, 1985: a time of working-class hardship, where most men were destined to take up a trade or become a steel worker. But this wasn’t the future for the young Morgan Evans. Growing up in the sleepy suburb of Warners Bay under the influence of Silverchair and The Screaming Jets, few could have guessed that Morgan Evans would go on to become the next big thing for country music. With two critically acclaimed albums, an ARIA award, two Number 1 country albums, 1.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify, a highly anticipated EP just released, and a 21-date tour across America underway, Morgan Evans’ success is undeniable. Despite how things may seem, Morgan’s success was far from an overnight one. His journey consisted of many chaotic and seemingly unrelated stepping stones that led to Nashville, aka Music City. To truly understand Morgan’s journey and his love of music, we have to go way back to 1989, when a four-year-old Morgan Evans was given a stack of classic country and rock records by his American aunt.

saw Keith Urban play live for the first time that Morgan felt truly inspired to do what he really loved – country music. “When I saw Keith Urban play for the first time I was like, ‘Hang on! All this old country stuff that I grew up listening to can be sort of combined with the rock stuff that I like and it can be its own thing’.” Morgan spent many years on the road playing rock with his band, and country as a solo act; it was these many years of hard work on the road he accredits to his popularity today. “When I’m out on the road, doing radio promo, or I’m headlining a festival, there’s always something I feel, like I’m only doing what I’m doing because I played whatever bar, and that could be any bar in Australia, I feel like I’ve played all of them,” he said. Eventually Morgan’s band life led him to a show in his future home of Nashville. After a few visits from 2007 onwards, Morgan truly fell in love with the town known as Music City.

“It was like a Glen Campbell best of, a Garth Brooks best of, some Eagles, some Creedence Clearwater in there, some Deep Purple, some Dire Straits – so all just rock and roll and country of that era,” he explained. “They were just the sound of my childhood.” Safe to say, it was love at the first listen for Morgan: “I was just a kid singing in the back seat; I was just like, put that one on! Put that other one on!”. Sitting in the back seat for years singing his little heart out, he was blissfully unaware it was those very records that would go on to shape his entire future. After spending his formative years listening to the likes of Garth Brooks and Eagles, Morgan went on to meet his best mate Nick Cook in kindergarten. After years of friendship between Nick and Morgan, soundtracked to classic rock and country, at age 15 the two became inspired to start a band. When Morgan began jamming, he had no plans and no idea what he wanted to become, he just had a true love for music. “I think I’ve just always wanted to play music,” Morgan said. “Whatever kind of music has inspired me has just been what I’ve done.” And that’s exactly what he did, spending years with his mates playing anything and everything he loved and that inspired him. “I think the first rehearsal we played Eagles and then the next one we played Metallica,” Morgan said. “I remember I was trying to rap at some point, I was screaming; it was a great way to experience music.” The next few years of his life were spent performing chaotic rock music in and around Newcastle, but it wasn’t until he

“Every day there would just be such a great experience, and I just wanted to come back and do it again, and then do it again and again.” After a long 10 years playing with his band and playing his solo music, the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place for Morgan as he returned to Nashville to write and record his self-titled debut solo LP. The said LP released in 2014, and Morgan returned to Australia to tour it for three months. “We’d kinda been to most places that we could play and sell some tickets in, and I thought that was the time, that was the time to just pack everything up, sell everything and move over.” Living on the other side of the world, Morgan did concede there are times when he feels homesick, as anyone would. “You realise you don’t have all the regular things that you love to do, like you don’t get up and go for a surf with your mates in the morning because the beach is like seven hours away and there are no waves there anyway,” he said. Despite this, the music in Music City has kept him feeling right at home.

ARTIST PROFILE

“Whenever I’m doing music stuff,” he said, “if I’m writing, recording, if I’m on the road or jumping on a bus, or a plane or on a stage, of course, I feel super at-home here. With his new EP just released, it’s doubtless he’s been hard at work in the studio again, but this time with a full band. After spending years alone on stage with a looper, and also locked inside like most of us were during the better part of 2020, Morgan felt he wanted a more human touch to his new music. “All the music I’ve been listening to and playing has been very human music: less

electronic, less like DJ, just all people playing music and stuff,” he said. So Morgan decided to get a band together and really make some noise. “I got into the studio with just this epic band,” he said, and with regards to the recording process, Morgan said: “It was like ‘Let’s go and make some noise’ and when we finally got in there and pressed record, it felt like that too.” He’s also not lost the childlike wonder that comes with first learning music; talking about Dann Huff’s production, he said: “It’s the closest thing to magic I think I’ve ever seen with my own eyes.” Façon |

CHARLIE’S STORY HAS SPANNED FAR, BUT IS STILL UNFOLDING

OUT OF THE BLUE & INTO THE BLACK WRITTEN BY LUKA FORMAN

"h

oney, can we run away?” is what Australian singersongwriter Charlie Collins found herself asking in her second release of 2021 after spending some time absorbing Ernest Hemingway’s novel Across The River and Into The Trees, an emotional and symbolic story of a dying solider and his final love affair.

Besides Honey Can We Run Away, a lovingly crafted ballad, Charlie’s rel eased three singl es from her upcoming album. Just My Luck, an angsty and grungy alt rock track, Undone, a heartfelt pop & country-inspired ballad, and the aptly named Fuck It, a visceral break-up blast. Charlie’s unique portfolio of solid indie tracks sway gracefully between the different sounds and genres of Australia’s vibrant soundscape. Even when paying attention to the sonic range explored throughout her releases from just this year, her raw trademark of genre defiance clearly presents itself. When looking into her roots, it’s no surprise Charlie Collins has emerged as the soulful and diverse artist she is today. Growing up in the music hub of Tamworth, Charlie was surrounded by inspiration from a young age, and that shows both in her music and career development. She could be found on stage as young as nine years old alongside Kasey Chambers, Keith Urban and the like, she’s done the rounds playing in different indie and alt bands across the country for the past 10 years, and she’s

also released solo music spanning multiple genres since 2018 — she’s a musician with many outlets. Charlie’s repertoire ranges from warm folk ballads with Stevie Nicks-style sultry and mellow stacked vocals, to glassy modern pop, and all the way to grungy and punchy indie rock, each diverse track with a common underlying theme: a narrative. “From a young age, my dad always drilled in the importance of storytelling in songs,” she says.

Honey Can We Run Away is also a collaboration with Kasey Chambers, who Charlie cited as a mentor to her from a young age. To new fans it may seem, as Neil Young might say, that hey hey, my my, Charlie’s been out of the blue and into the black, much like her sound, as it spans genres, going out of the blue and into the black with each new release. But the truth is, she’s been hard at work with her solo career for years now and her rolling stone is gathering pace. Charlie’s story has spanned far, but is still unfolding, and picking up the pieces of the narrative she’s been telling through her music is a joy for anyone.

Honey Can We Run Away is available on Spotify, YouTube Music and Deezer. You can find out more about Charlie Collins on her website at charliecollinsmusic.com or on her Facebook page.

IT MAKES SENSE FOR DANIEL TO STEP UP, TAKE BACK HIS POWER, AND PROUDLY DEFINE HIMSELF.

s

inger, artist, guitarist, songwriter, frontman, Novocastrian? You’d be better off asking who Daniel Johns isn’t. Since being on the stage in the early ’90s with his wildly successful band Silverchair, Daniel’s had a career stretching from loud basement punk gigs to edgy synthwave art pop shows. In between all this time his many facets of expression have led him to countless creative corners of our world’s musical landscape, none of which could be defined in a simple answer – you don’t go on that journey without a few interesting stories to tell, and moments of personal discovery. So hours could be spent answering the question “who is Daniel Johns?”. In fact, hours have been spent answering this question by Daniel himself in the aptly titled Spotify exclusive podcast Who Is Daniel Johns? Who is Daniel Johns? is a deep dive into the life and times of one of the most successful, controversial and enigmatic artists in Australian music history. As someone who does not give many interviews, the five-part documentary podcast

fter a challenging few years and series of lifechanging events, both globally and personally, Ladyhawke (‘Pip’ Brown) is back and better than ever.

Ladyhawke’s highly anticipated fourth album Time Flies, released November 19, captures the joy and nostalgia of the 2000s, while also embracing a fresh focus on lyricism and emotion. One quick listen and it is easy to see that the past few years have been both transformative and reflective for Pip Brown. While the world was seemingly at a standstill, Brown was experiencing the ups and downs of life personally. With the joys of marriage and the birth of her baby daughter, came the blues of post-natal depression, a skin cancer diagnosis and a global pandemic. But nothing can hold Pip Brown back! After a five-year hiatus, Pip feels this new album is her rebirth as a musician. “I was feeling pretty grateful to be alive and making music, 70 |

so I felt like I didn’t ‘care’ anymore – not in a bad way, I just stopped over thinking it,” she said. The album’s November release followed the huge success of its first single, Guilty Love, a collaboration with Broods. Grounded on the experiences of growing up religious, the song and accompanying video were personal for Pip Brown and Broods’ lead vocalist Georgia Nott.

Mixed Emotions, the album’s second single, was written with Jono Sloan and Nick Littlemore. When speaking about the meaning, Pip said: “The song is about all the things you can feel with one person, sometimes all in a single day. Ups and downs, confusion, highs, and lows. And everything in between!” In addition to the album’s release, Ladyhawke is touring the Australian east coast in February and March of 2022. Tickets are selling fast, but if you manage to secure tickets, it will be a show you do not want to miss.

n 2019, a girl by the name of Mayah put all her cards on the table and jumped from studying to become a doctor in North Queensland to the pursuit of a music career in New York, New York. At first, family and friends were dubious of her decision, but today it’s clear the decision has paid off. However, this isn’t to say the decision paid off overnight. After Mayah relocated, 2020 happened, and she found herself at an impasse. But rather than giving up music, Mayah decided to go between healthcare work in rural Queensland, and working on her music in her free time. It was this tenacity and dedication that’s allowed her to spend her time on stage rather than just in a hospital. During her chaotic existence in the limbo between careers, Mayah took on the pseudonym iyah may and freed herself through her music. She says it’s her music that gave her solace from the turbulence we’ve all become so intimately familiar with these past few years. Upon examining her music, this is pretty apparent.

WRITTEN BY LUKA FORMAN Her celestial vocals swirl through the soundscape of her music to create an air of beauty and elegance. Combine this with the solid and lo-fi drums, and it gives the atmosphere of a place away from it all, a place of rest, and a place of relaxation. Through her music iyah may transforms the solace it gave her into a moment of peace for anyone to enjoy. This vibe is even carried on through the cover art of her song MF ILY, drawn by iyah’s sister, of iyah chilling on a cloud. This being said however, it doesn’t mean her music isn’t fit for a solid rager. In between the pockets of peace, she’s got some seriously catchy hooks with funky grooves and singalong earworms — you’d be hard pressed to not add her to your party playlist.

fter taking time out to rest for the past few years, Matt Goss, former lead singer of English ’90s boy band Bros, has returned with more soulful sounds for your ears and a tour around Australia.

He’s been on what could be described as a hiatus for about half a decade, and after a tough few years of change, introspection, life events and awareness, Matt’s taken up the reins again and has finished off his year with a barrage of releases. However, there’s far more to Matt than you might realise: behind the eyes of the soul singer lies a lifetime of experience and an array of creativity that reaches beyond the musical world. During the past few years Matt experienced a few profound realisations and life-changing events that ultimately led him back to his home — the UK, and the stage. “[My brother and I] lost our mother and lost our sister,” he said. “Inevitably the catalyst for me was also thinking ‘I want to go see the world again. I want to find that little sushi restaurant that’s so out of the way’.” Times have undoubtedly been as tough for Matt as they have for anyone, and this drew him away from the things he loved. “I didn’t even want to play my piano or even think of writing a song,” he said, but in contrast also said: “I’ve got a tattoo that says ‘never waste good agony’, and that’s pretty much how I live my life. “There is beauty in all things, you just have to take your time to look a little bit deeper,” he said, “and through the connection with my fans they made it very, very clear to

me that they wanted new music.” On stage and in the studio, Matt proudly flouts the trends, rules and stigma of being a pop star, crafting defiant songs that stem out of the structural and thematic expectations of pop music. “I love pop music – it’s not a dirty word anymore,” he said. “Everyone says people don’t have the attention span anymore, but who has the right to say that?” The raw style he puts into his sound waves doesn’t stand alone, however — it’s matched by his personal style and on-stage swagger. Matt performed 120 shows a year for 10 years, and you probably can’t do that without picking up a thing or two. “I’m fucking proud to be a musician,” he said. “I’m proud that I know how to rock a stadium, and transform and transport an audience. It’s taken me many years to actually say that.” And as far as personal style goes, due to Matt’s fashion passion, it’s not lacking at all. “I think my biggest dream outside music is to do fashion design,” he said. “I do love exploring fashion creatively, it’s right up there with music for me.” The inspiration behind his eclectic array of looks spans beyond the following of trends. “I’m not into trends — I’m into style,” Matt said. “Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, James Dean? They just got it right.” It’s the avoidance of trends that’s kept him out of being locked into a loop of nostalgia, or a loop of following and dropping trends. “Trends come and go; it’s more important

Matt’s upcoming album, The Beautiful Unknown, is releasing February 4, 2022, and his latest singles are currently available on all ma jor streaming platforms. uby Fields, Angie McMahon, Alex Lahey, Jack River, Tired Lion– big names, but who’s next? It’s clear the Aussie music industry has a huge soft spot for solid femme indie rockers, but it’s been a long while since a fresh face joined the ranks. So Australia’s got an itch for a new girl, but who’s going to scratch it? Well, that might be one Miss Lili Crane. Coming from Newcastle and rocking her very own supergroovy Y2K look with a sound to match, Lili has stormed the indie scene with her new single Lemonade. With her funky, fresh talent, she shows no signs of stopping. Now, Lili may be a fresh face, but she’s certainly been around the block a few times when it comes to music. After being inspired by a Taylor Swift performance she saw at the young age of 11, Lili’s been driven for nearly 10 years now – and she’s only 20. “I saw a Taylor Swift concert in 2012 and that struck me so hard, and I thought, ‘how amazing would it be to one day get to this point’, and I guess that was a driving force,” Lili said.

WRITTEN BY LUKA FORMAN

“Once I listened to that concert I would just write and write and write more songs, and try my hardest to get some little gigs.” After releasing Lemonade, Lili has begun to reap the fruits of her years of hard work. Everyone from your musicobsessed mate to the likes of Triple J and even Rolling Stone magazine have been giving Lili some solid traction and time in the limelight, and Lili’s more than happy. “I’m like, so stoked: I couldn’t be happier, I’m really, really, really excited about it,” she said, and with this traction came a serious aspiration for Lili: “I’m also aiming to play Big Sound in 2022, that’s my goal. I don’t know if we’ll get there, but we’ll definitely try.” Lili Crane may be soon prove to be Newcastle’s first big female artist, so keep your eyes and ears open – Lili’s on her way.

EUPHORIA ON THE DANCEFLOOR WRITTEN BY NADENE BUDDEN

w

hat are some of your happiest memories? Most of mine are soundtracked with artists or even specific songs I remember playing, but above all of them are my memories of live music. Whether it’s a DJ set in a sweaty club or a heartfelt folk tune in the sun, that sense of total euphoria live music creates is hard to replicate, however, dance duo Kinder has become a master of doing just that. The complete serendipity of your happiest memories can freeze-time themselves and condense hours or days into a single moment. It’s only fitting then that Kinder bottles this sense of unbridled joy into explosive three-minute tracks. Last summer, Kinder, two Ghanaian-Australian sisters, took Australia by storm with the single Come Along featuring A.GIRL, who the sisters actually met at a writing camp the year prior.

teenagers they began producing their own music, soon combining their love of melody and rhythm – the key ingredients needed to create the perfect infectious tune. “We were inspired by so many different genres growing up. We had an emo stage and then we loved pop but then we also got into the dance world as well. We wanted to just try everything out,” the duo said of their early days. With current influences including Nigerian artist Rema to American dance duo Sofi Tukker, it’s clear to see why they share their name with a childhood-favourite egg-shaped chocolate.

Come Along is vivid in its reimagination of Ghana from the memories the duo made during some childhood travels, even featuring the gyil, a traditional Ghanaian wooden xylophone. Combining these hints of nostalgia and simpler times to such a thumping dance beat brings them to life.

Immersing themselves in Sydney club culture, the odd DJ slot soon became headline sets. Of course, it wasn’t long until Kinder gained attention in the festival circuit and superstars like Marshmello, RL Grime and Rita Ora came knocking for a support act. And with summer just around the corner and Australia finally returning to a new normal, the sisters are bursting to jump back onstage and share their new music with the world and spread their vibrant energy.

The single, released in late 2019, marked a shift in sonic direction for Kinder and propelled them even further to stardom, reaching national audiences across Triple J.

“I just can't wait for the moment where we can be outdoors in a group of people just dancing again,” they said. “It's just like what that whole life was, so that's what summer means to us.”

“That was definitely something we would have loved to see happen. So when it did happen, we were stoked,” the girls, Savannah and Briony Osei, said about the radio play.

With Kinder set to perform across the Pacific, from their own headlining Australia tour to a slot in Perth’s Wine Machine festival all the way to spot on New Zealand’s Snow Machine festival line-up, the duo is making the most of the rescheduled dates and time in their home studio. But it doesn’t come without its setbacks. While they’ve been using this time to finish their new EP and are excited to share their new music with the world, it’s hard to guess what the response will be when different cities and states continue to plunge in and out of lockdowns.

“It’s still super weird when we hear our song on the radio... I don't know if you ever get used to that, but we definitely haven't yet.” Following it up with the darker and moodier Bus Stop is proof that multiple lockdowns and gig cancellations cannot stop this powerhouse duo from turning any space into a nightclub. It’s been a steady climb, but how exactly do two sisters from regional NSW do it all? Growing up in Maitland, Savannah and Briony were surrounded by music from a young age. While their mother was a fan of classic rock from David Bowie to The Cure and Fleetwood Mac, their father loved superstars like Lucky Dube and Michael and Janet Jackson. All of this exposed them to rich beat-driven work and the power of electrifying charisma, and this was only the beginning of their musical journey. From a young age Savannah was drawn to the piano and all its beautiful melodic tones, while Briony dived into dance, recognising the potential to explore how powerful beats and rhythms can move the body. As

“It was weird to be thinking about putting out dance music,” they said. “But I guess it's just one of those things… You've just got to carry on with it, keep being positive and keep pushing. Now we're going to put it out regardless of what happens.” Two years in the making, their new EP, set for release just in time for summer means Kinder will be fully charged up and ready to go for one stellar year ahead in 2022. Fingers crossed we can all join them and welcome back the sound of summer – music blasting, tapping glasses and loads of laughter, surrounded by the people we love.

Sloths in the jungles of Panama, manta rays in the green waters of French Polynesia; wildlife is naturally drawn to Isabelle (Izzy) Nee, 29, and Kieran Wyse, 30. Their epic adventure caught the breeze when Kieran bought a 13m Beneteau y acht in Croatia in 2018. He christened it Merewether , his Newcastle suburb, laughing to his mum that he was taking a piece of home to all four corners. During his second summer cruising the Med, Kieran was considering packing it in when he chance-met Izzy on the Greek island of Ios. He describes Izzy as changing his life, giving him the motivation and teamwork to start a journey that continues today. So Kieran, an industrial electrician from Newcastle, and Izzy, a TV journalist from Sweden, fell in love and crossed two seas and two oceans, visited 18 countries, traversed the Panama Canal and spent the past 750 days with each other. When tempers flare they seek opposite ends of the yacht to fume. But spending in-depth time in each other’s presence means their love is mainly smooth sailing.

What wisdoms do you walk away with each episode? How does it make you feel?

After each episode of the Hey Soul Sista podcast I’m a little wiser and am inspired by the special guests – brave, successful and wise women – to do life better and in a more soulful way. I think we are all trying to do life the best we can in a happy, fun and soulful way. Life can certainly throw some curveballs at us though, some bigger and harder than others. It is through women sharing their stories, their challenges and traumas, but also the wisdoms and life lessons they have learned along the way, that can help us all to navigate our own lives.

Tell me a little about the Melissa Histon journey.

Sometimes life seems like a series of random moments and events without any meaning or purpose, but when I look back over my life I can see how those supposedly abitrary moments make sense and led me on my crazy life journey. I’m a mum to four kids. I have a marketing degree. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 35 and spent 12 months in treatment for it. Though it seemed dreadful at the time, the breast cancer led me to re-starting my photography business, which led me to travelling to Nepal for a sex trafficking documentary project, which led me to starting The Sista Code events and blog, which led me to establishing the Got Your Back Sista charity, which led me to producing the Hey Soul Sista podcast. I can’t wait to see what is in store for me in the future!

HEADLINING

CAMINO GOLD

When it comes to the archetypal indie band, you don’t have to look much further than Camino Gold. It’s a real classic ‘mates first and bandmates second’ outfit, going round the gigging scene playing show after show and climbing the ladder. Even on stage Camino Gold has the classic presence and look: four guys, beaten-up guitars, loud sounds, psychedelic button-ups, and long salty hair. Since their start in 2019 the guys have gotten four solid singles under their belt, Triple J and Unearthed radio plays, and have gone as far as playing the iconic Oxford Art Factory. But being in an indie band is no cakewalk – it takes some serious dedication and determination, so how did we get here? Well, Camino Gold’s guitarist and part-time cowboy, Marcus, has a story to tell. Beyond the chilled-out looks and tunes are some seriously talented guys with serious ambitions.

and started getting a bit of a following.” From there, things kept steadily growing for the Camino Gold boys. “We had some luck with triple j playing our songs, which was pretty cool,” Marcus said, and from here the boys have a continuing ambition that is bound to serve them well. “We see ourselves going on the festival scene,” he said. “We’d love to play splendour – that’d be a dream.” In between that dream and the present, Marcus says Camino Gold has been spending its time gigging and working on upcoming releases. “We’ve been recording three songs this weekend; we’re just hoping to get them out,” he said. “We’re thinking of releasing a few singles, then an EP could be on the cards, I reckon.”

A few years ago, four guys from Newy decided to get together and start jamming for a bit of fun. After laying down some tunes together, they quickly released they’d caught a bit of lightning in a bottle.

“I’d say [the new music] is sonically hard to describe,” Marcus said. “It’s different from our previous stuff. We’re sort of growing; it’s another level with better production and stuff.”

“We all just clicked as soon as we played together, so we knew it was something we could seriously pursue,” Marcus said. “We started off just jamming out in the garage, and then got a few gigs here and there at the local, then we started just gigging around Newcastle and stuff, recording

From here Camino Gold has big plans and the dedication to get there. With new music in the works and more shows planned, you’ll likely hear from them soon.

BE ONE WITH THE WAT E R The ocean is a source of joy and happiness for a lot of Australians, giving a sense of community and connection. We have some of the world’s best beaches lying at our doorstep, where you can fish, swim, surf, dive, and everything in between. But we have to share the water with its natural inhabitants. Fader wetsuits, while super stylish to the human eye, use camouflage technology to help blend the wearer with the ocean, so you can be one with the water. Anika Craney, a swimmer, diver, surfer, fisher and all-round sea-lover, describes the ocean as a “second home” for her. It was here she underwent the significant experience of surviving a shark attack.

“It’s someone else’s home,” she says of the ocean. “It may feel like it’s ours to us water people, but we weren’t born in the water; it’s not where we live, it’s where we enjoy our time.” And the wetsuits can help the ocean feel friendly again. “This morning I was surfing in green water; I was wearing a green wetsuit and I just blended in” Anika says. “It gives me a sense of peace.”

Roundhouse restaurant is the crowning jewel atop Newcastle’s first five-star hotel, Crystalbrook Kingsley. Step into the lobby, take the elevator to the top floor, and enjoy one of the best panoramic views Newcastle has to offer. Being welcomed by the accommodating staff and walking into the restaurant feels like stepping into the sky, with views from Newcastle Beach to the Hunter Valley. Airy furniture, a host of greenery and floor-to-ceiling windows create an atmosphere of luxurious simplicity, letting the glorious brutalist architecture speak for itself. Showcasing distinctly modern Australian cuisine, Roundhouse beats the drum for the Hunter region’s abundance of world-class produce. Working in partnership with local artisans, farmers and fisherman, Roundhouse presents pared-back dishes that celebrate the beauty of the ingredients fresh from the earth and sea. Eighty per cent of the produce at Roundhouse is sourced within a three-hour radius of the hotel, placing it as a leader in sustainable food sourcing and abiding by its ethos of “responsible luxury”. The wait staff and team are passionate and knowledgeable about the sourcing of their produce. Whilst enjoying a Coastal Margarita from their extensive cocktail list, one attentive waitress informed that the native plant garnish in the drink was grown and picked just a few minutes away along Bathers Way. 142 | Façon

Beauty Q&A With Hanami Cosmetics H

anami Cosmetics is an Australianmade, proudly independently owned and woman-run brand: a trifecta of things we love and champion here at Façon Magazine. Featuring a non-toxic range of nail polish es, lipsticks, mascaras an d more, Hanami Cosmetic’s core belief is providing cosmetics with a conscience, and great beauty without all the nasties! We sat down with naturopath and creator of Hanami Cosmetics, Hannah Jones, to talk to her about all things ethical beauty.

Why are cruelty-free products so important to you? I have always held a deep connection and concern for the welfare of animals; growing up in Tasmania on a large property, I always had a menagerie of rescued wildlife and pets to look after, which is where it all started for me. I’m very passionate about seeing an end to animal experimentation in my lifetime. I operate from a position of respect and care for others and the earth, but I’m also very aware of the decades of harm that have been done before us (and that continues around us). Which is why I care so much about creating a cosmetics brand with a conscience, and doing my part to right the industry’s wrongs.

I pour my heart and my values into making vegan, cruelty-f ree and nontoxic cosmetics so our customers can feel good and look good whilst knowing the products they’re using are not causing unnecessary harm to others.

We love your ethos “Cosmetics with a Conscience”, how did you come up with it? Do no harm. Support local. Respect and care for others, and the earth. These are the core values I live by, and that led me to create an ethical beauty brand, to help people express their full and creative selves without compromising their ethics, which I think is perfectly summed up by our tagline!

What was your inspiration for starting Hanami Cosmetics? For more than 10 years, I worked in clinics, pharmacies and health food stores as a naturopath. And it always struck me how plain and serious many of the natural ‘clean beauty’ products that hit the shelves were. There was nothing that ever really appealed to me as a lover of colour who doesn’t take themselves too seriously, but who is also a passionate vegan and crueltyf ree advocate. And so, I set out to do it myself!

What is your standout Hanami Cosmetics nail polish shade for this summer?

were in dire need of some advice on how to recover their nails.

My pick is ‘Superego’ – one of our newest shades launched for summer 2021. Sure, bright green might not be your go-to choice when it comes to picking out a subtle, everyday shade, but it’s a surprisingly versatile nail colour that will add an amazing pop of colour to your entire look!

So I got to work straight away and came up with some easy-to-use treatment products that would help.

Can you tell us more about your new nail treatment range? Over the past few months, due to lockdown around the country, we have received countless DMs and emails f rom people who had taken it upon themselves to remove their own gels/ acrylics/extensions at home (ouch!) and

In August we launched Rescue Me Oil (a beautiful cuticle and nail oil with celery seed extract to stimulate the nail plate) and Repair Me Gel (a plantbased calcium strengthener) – and next month we are adding a Nail Primer, a Long Wear Top Coat, and a Nail ReTreat Christmas pack to our treatment range as well, perfect for those whose nails require some extra TLC.
