As the days get longer and the air has a lovely spring warmth to it, I am reminded just how far the team at Façon has come since last summer, and our launch in December 2015.

W

E have seen some exquisite collections arrive on our doorstep from some of our favourite designers, and we’ve hand-delivered Façon Book One to some of the biggest names in the fashion industry. We’ve attended Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia and we’ve seen some major changes impact the fashion industry thanks to the continued rise of social media. However, more than anything, we’ve met so many incredibly talented, inspirational people who are – like us – all striving towards making their dreams come true.

From local business owners, to celebrities, artists and sports people, we are in awe of the passion and dedication that is to be found in our region. We know the success of these individuals is not an overnight phenomenon, nor are they just the “lucky” ones. To have the guts to chase down a dream takes determination, grit, sleepless nights and, at times, self-doubt.

14

For those who put themselves out there every day – and often in the public eye, I salute you, for now, more than ever, I

MAGAZINE BODY Mag 2 copy.indd 14

understand just how hard that is. The past nine months have given me some of the best and worst days of my career.

From incredible highs as I’ve watched my team pull together some amazing shoots, to receiving the praise of industry professionals whom I have long admired. There have also been days when I have questioned what the hell I’d gotten myself into. However, through it all, the talent I am lucky enough to work with has continually driven me forward. In the pages of Façon Book Two, we celebrate the success of many of these individuals in our aptly named feature #influencers.

These talented people all have unique stories and they have been kind enough to share some of themselves with us, including what being an influencer means to them, as well as a few secrets on what a perfect Newy day looks like. For our cover shoot, we had the immense pleasure of shooting with Gemma Sanderson – an internationally acclaimed model hailing from Newcastle – who once again reminded us that success isn’t built in a day, even for someone as incredibly beautiful as Gemma. It takes determination, hard work and professionalism. You can read her story in the following pages.

Finally, before I sign off, I want to thank each and every one of you whom I have met during the past nine months. Whether you are celebrated in Façon Book Two, or perhaps we shared our stories over a coffee, you have all inspired me in one way or another and I can’t wait to get started on Façon Book Three! I hope you are equally inspired by what we have created. Much love,

ITH her tousled, glossy hair, high cheekbones and lithe limbs, Gemma is every inch the international beauty on set for the Façon Book Two photo shoot.

Represented by Chic Models in Australia, Premier in London and numerous others across the globe, Gemma’s life via Instagram is filled with images of luxury shoot locations, champagne sipping in airport lounges and her enviable physique in divine outfits. She has worked with hundreds of brands including Tommy Hilfiger, Very, Anthropologie, David Jones, ASOS and Topshop and appeared in magazines Elle, Marie Clare, Cleo, Grazia UK and FHM.

For this 34-year-old, life seems pretty darn amazing, and yet in spite of all the Insta-glamour and her intimidating beauty, Gemma admits, in a soft Londontinged Aussie accent, that she has only achieved her career goals through “hard work, determination and a good attitude”. Gemma’s close-knit and supportive family helped foster this strong work ethic, and visiting them in Newcastle is something she tries to do regularly to be with her mum and much-loved nieces and nephews.

It was while at school in her home town in 1997 that Gemma got the first taste of her future modelling career, when she was selected as one of six finalists in the Dolly Magazine Model Search. “I got heaps of prizes and as a teenage girl, I absolutely loved it! It’s funny to think back now though, as I had zero idea what I was doing; I thought modelling was all about standing and smiling at the camera!” she says.

It made me a much better model, a stronger person, and it gave me the confidence to go and find myself the right modelling agency. It pushed and challenged me and I blossomed in my career because of it. She began an environmental science degree in Sydney before her head was turned by the advertisement that would change her life forever.

“I saw an ad in the Foxtel magazine for Australia’s Next Top Model (ANTM) and I knew I had to audition.”

Fans of the show will remember Gemma dividing the audience with her determination to win. She was shown as frequently being the victim of catty remarks from the other girls, but gracious winner Gemma has nothing but praise for the experience and is still in regular contact with a lot of her co-stars.

“I lived with runner-up Chloe for six months after the show finished and I caught up with Naomi, Chloe and Simone a few weeks ago, we’re all good mates!” she says. “Being part of ANTM and winning season one made me a much better model, a stronger person, and it gave me the confidence to go and find myself the right modelling agency. It pushed and challenged me and I blossomed in my career because of it.” After ANTM Gemma’s modelling career went stratospheric and she travelled the world shooting for brands in Milan, New York, Hamburg, Cape Town and London. “I absolutely adore the travelling part of my job and the fact that most days are different. I love the fact that modelling is so creative; you never know what will happen when the shoot starts and that as a team, we get to create something visually beautiful.”

In 2008 the opportunity came for Gemma to relocate permanently to the UK and this Earl Grey tea-drinking anglophile has since purchased her own cottage in a pretty village in South Buckinghamshire.

“While I miss my family and my old hometown, London is a fantastic place to be based as there is always something fun happening! I also love the way I can fly to Amsterdam for an early shoot but still be tucked up in my own bed that same night.” London modelling agency Premier, made famous by a television reality show that originally screened in 2011, has played an important role in Gemma’s life. As one of the agency’s “older models” she regularly presents at the New Faces Bootcamp, to impart her advice to the teenage models. “While so many things have changed about the industry since I began working in it, I try to convey to the girls that oldfashioned hard work and simply showing up on time with a fresh face and good manners can go a long way. “Fashion can be fickle, and while you might have your moment one day, the next day it might be someone else’s. I tell the girls it is better to be remembered as being easy to work with as you will get rebooked time and time again.”

Gemma’s new adventure as an influencer with the In My Knickers blog and her

YouTube channel is just beginning. She hopes to reach a wider audience of young women who feel uncertain or unsure about whether or not the fashion industry is for them.

Fashion can be fickle, and while you might have your moment one day, the next day it might be someone else’s. I tell the girls it is better to be remembered as being easy to work with as you will get rebooked time and time again. “In My Knickers is so named because of how much of my life I have spent on sets in my knickers! I have a lot of experience now and while I hope to keep modelling for as long as possible, I am also passionate about helping girls pursue their fashion dreams. “I blog about other models and I post short blogs about basic stuff like what to

bring with you on a shoot and how to find the right agency.” One of the key lessons Gemma has learnt during her time in the world of fashion is to be strong and know your own worth.

“Models are often thought of as the least important person on set and sometimes feel that their voices are not valid. My experience has taught me otherwise. I know to respect myself enough that I can speak out and offer an opinion and I hope to help other girls feel that they can do the same,” she says. “Modelling can be hard work with long days and challenging shoots, but I know I am lucky to have had such a varied and fun career. I have learnt so much from some inspirational people in the industry and I hope I can now return the favour and give something back.” Gemma’s influence will no doubt be far reaching and we can’t wait to see what this gorgeous and determined woman does next.

A FASHIONABLE EDUCATION He’s pitched to Topshop, worked with the likes of Galliano and Lagerfeld & spent his fair share of time in front of the lens, but PR pro Bryce McIntosh has found his true calling, educating the next generation of fashion.

T

O say Bryce McIntosh is ambitious would be an understatement. The former model and current careers and communications manager at Sydney’s The Fashion Institute has the kind of unwavering self belief that comes from growing up in a small town with big dreams. “I’ve always had this belief that if you really want something, you can get it,” says Bryce, “and I’ve proven it so many times.”

A proud Novocastrian, Bryce was inducted into the fashion industry at the tender age of 14. His interest in the performing arts led him to audition for a role in Superman Returns (the 2006 blockbuster was being filmed on location in Sydney and Newcastle) and although he didn’t nab the part, the casting agents had other plans for him. “They said, ‘Look, you’re not right for this role, but have you ever considered modeling?’ I’d always had this impression that a male model was Calvin Klein/ rock hard abs, that kind of thing, so I just gave them this odd look, like, I don’t understand…” he laughs.

Too young for the Fashion Week gig they’d had in mind, a stunned Bryce left the room with a piece of paper – a contract. He’d been signed on the spot.

While this may sound like the beginning of a ‘male model gets his big break’ fairytale, a career in front of the camera was not the happily ever after in Bryce’s success story, merely a stepping stone to the other side of fashion. “I was still living in Newcastle, doing modeling on and off, here and there, but it was tough travelling back and forth – it was a two-hour hike to Sydney just to make it to a casting!” he says.

Despite having a foot in the industry’s door, courtesy of his modeling career, after graduating high school Bryce still did the hard yards, interning first at a Sydneybased fashion PR agency, before moving onto an international agency where he found himself working alongside major luxury labels like Galliano, Lagerfeld and Cavalli – not bad company for a Newcastle kid who had never studied fashion. “I realised that this was exactly what I was supposed to do,” says Bryce, reflecting on his internship, “getting a brand’s message across.” Having found his calling, Bryce continued to intern and it was during a week of experience at Torstar Communications that his persistence paid off. Impressed with Bryce’s resume, the fashion director put him forward for a permanent role and Torstar’s director called him for an on-the-spot interview, mid-date.

“It was the week of my 19th birthday; I was literally on a date and my phone started ringing,” he says. Bryce took the call, got grilled for 15 minutes and was offered the job.

“The last thing she said was ‘Can you start Monday?’ I was still living in Newcastle at the time so I called my parents and said ‘I have to move to Sydney. Right now.’” Bryce credits much of his strive and success to his small town upbringing and the growth experienced through making the transition to the big smoke.

“In Newcastle we don’t have access to the things that people in Sydney do, so when you break away you’re opened up to all these new opportunities and because it’s a competitive industry, you really push to get them,” he says. Of course, that’s not to downplay Newcastle’s rising status in the creative realm.

“I definitely think Newcastle is on the rise, with magazines like Façon and amazing runway shows, there’s a lot of incredible talent in Newcastle. A lot of opportunities in Sydney, but a lot of the talent is coming from Newcastle.” That’s certainly the case in Sydney where Bryce says Novocastrians make up a large portion of the fashion landscape. “There are so many people I know, who I network and work with every day, who

are from the Newcastle/Central Coast/ Hunter Region. It’s almost like you’ve got a sticker on your head that says you’re from Newcastle; there’s a certain spark and flair.”

So how does a fashion professional without any professional qualifications end up as the careers and communications manager at a fashion school? Well, in the case of Bryce McIntosh, experience is everything and there’s nothing you can’t achieve if you want it badly enough. “I was working at Torstar and wanted a taste of something new,” Bryce says.

The Fashion Institute approached him, wondering if he knew of anyone who would be interested in a careers/operator role and that’s when the penny dropped. “I thought, you know what, this is something that I’d be super intrigued to try, and with my background in PR, I’d love to turn this into a bit of a careers/ communications role!”

The Fashion Institute prides itself on its connections and in an industry where it’s all about who you know, who better to have on board than someone who has worked in fashion since age 14? Bryce is an endless source of industry knowledge, something that can only be obtained through an immersion in both sides of fashion and his industry connections are second to none. “I’m in charge of the communications division including PR, marketing, social

media, all the creative stuff. Anything you see about The Fashion Institute in the media is coming from me.” Bryce says. “I’m also the go-to person for anything careers-wise. I work with students oneon-one every day and provide them with opportunities into the industry, including internships, work experience, events, networking opportunities – anything that puts our students into contact with the real world.”

Does it get anymore ‘real world’ than New York Fashion Week? I think not. Which is why I half considered enrolling at The Fashion Institute when Bryce told me about the International Workplace Training Program he launched three years ago.

“Every September I take a group of 15 to 20 students to NYC for Fashion Week. Last year we worked with Topshop, New York Model Management, Salvatore Ferragamo, plus some huge PR agencies. I managed to get the students into the Givenchy show last year and a few students managed their way into Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs as well as Victoria Beckham . . . such a surreal experience.”

This September, students can look forward to working with the likes of Nylon magazine, Dion Lee, Paper magazine and Marie Claire, and these high-calibre connections are by no means a one-off. The Fashion Institute is run by the cream of the industry’s crop. “We have all of these really influential people teaching our classes, people who

are currently in the industry and experts in their field,” explains Bryce.

This real-world experience is an essential part of The Fashion Institute’s curriculum and having interned his own way to success, Bryce knows its value firsthand.

“It’s major for us. Interning is a mandatory component of the diploma and something we are constantly talking to students about.” While it’s important to note that intern life isn’t all glamour, you never know what might happen, says Bryce. A week working at Harpers Bazaar turned into a dream come true for a group of recent TFI interns, who found themselves assisting on the cover story with Bella Hadid.

So what’s next for Bryce McIntosh? For the moment, this fashion aficionado is focused on growing the profile of The Fashion Institute, fostering relationships with leading brands and continuing to establish the International Workplace Training Program. Next stop? Paris.

“Potentially we might be taking a group of students to cover Paris Fashion Week next year,” Bryce shares excitedly. “Not only is it great watching a group of students grow and experience the things I’ve set up for them in NYC, but actually coming home and watching them getting jobs is what’s really rewarding for me.”

In a world where it is becoming increasingly difficult to stand out in a crowd, they are the trailblazers in their chosen industry and through social media; they speak to a captive audience. They are #influencers. With the continued rise of social media and the influencer phenomena that is P H O T O G R A P H E R

1. What do you love most about Newcastle?

4. H ow do you hope to inspire those around you?

I don’t start off wanting to inspire people. My wish is for people to be true to themselves & learn to love who they are. Daily, I try to stay positive & focus on learning that God had a purpose for all of us.

The coastal-chic vibe.

2. What does being an influencer mean to you? I don’t really consider myself an influencer, but it’s humbling that people are interested in what I’m saying.

3. Who influences you & why? My influence can come from observing nature and horticulture; I love the patterns I observe. My friends, whom I have from different cities, eg: Los Angeles, NYC, Athens, Sydney, Melbourne, London. So you can say travel & cities influence me as well as friends.

4. How do you hope to inspire those around you? Walking my talk, always expanding my comfort zone, being the best version of myself (most of the time… I’m still human).

6. Name your three favourite fashion labels at the moment . . .… Calibre, Godwin Charli, & Annex at Bondi.

8. A perfect day in Newcastle is . . . Followed by either jumping on the SUPs [Stand Up Paddleboard] in the lake or heading into the beach for a dip. Afternoon coffee & lunch somewhere along Darby St . . . 1. What do you love most about Newcastle? The people, the good food, you know … the Vibe (a La The Castle). But mainly Doughheads.

2. What does being an influencer mean to you? Well, I would take that as a huge compliment, but to me, it means being authentic, true & gutsy.

3. Who influences you and why? The game changers, the ones who make shit HAPPEN. The people with soul. I think of my mum (yes, cliché) but people who have so much depth & spirit, who just seem like music when they arrive in the room, a song you love to hear that changes your mood. Those people who refuse to accept the world as it is & know they have the power to create change. You know, those people who are so bloody passionate about what they do, wild horses couldn’t stop them.

4. How do you hope to inspire those around you? I hope to think by taking risks & having a bit of belief in myself. That’s very hard, but I follow those gut feelings, which is something I’m proud of. You got to be proud of something, right!

5. Top three Instagram accounts we should be following . . .… @martinschoeller – Follow immediately. This man takes the time to get the stories behind why individuals are homeless. Maxine:  It has absolutely everything you could possibly want & need! We travelled Australia in VW Kombi for 12 months & I can honestly say Newcastle is an incredible place to call home!

Maxine: We want people to see that absolutely anything is possible if you stay positive, don’t take yourself too seriously, accept failure & grow from it, work hard & never give up.

Karstan: It has the bones of a city but the heart of a country town.

2. What does being an influencer mean to you? Karstan: It’s about showing that anything is possible, dream big & explore the world as you only live once.

3. Who influences you & why? Maxine: It’s difficult to define what or who influences me, as I think that every second of every day we are being  influenced by our surroundings. However if I had to pick someone it would be Richard Branson, he believes in turning ideas into a REALITY! Karstan: I am influenced by people with open minds, who constantly push the boundaries. Because in today’s fast changing world, those who follow protocol can get left behind.

1. What do you love most about Newcastle?  It’s HOME! No matter what, Newcastle always has & always will be home. Even if I’m living in another country, it will be home. There is something indescribable about it... A certain charm, shall we say. & unless you grew up there, I don’t think you’ll ever truly be able to understand it.

2. What does being an influencer mean to you?  A few things . . . I’d say first & foremost would be to help make positive change. Then creativity & allowing yourself to be expressive in a way that either relates to, inspires, motivates or entertains other people. It’s about doing what you love, what you’re passionate about, & using the reach you have to make a positive impact on this world.

3. Who influences you & why? I think every single person is a source of inspiration & influence. Everyone has their own story, their own heartaches, their own successes – something to teach & something to learn. That’s why I love connecting with & meeting new people. Because it means I will be able to be inspired all over again! It’s never ending.

4. How do you hope to inspire 6. Name your three favourite those around you? fashion labels at the moment . . . I don’t necessarily want to inspire anyone. This world needs to find positive changes, yes. But I don’t want to make it my mission to be someone or something others look up to, or place on a pedestal. I will continue to be a source people can seek out if they want some assistance – I’m always happy to try to help in any way I can! But other than that, I’m just floating through life, doing what I love & maybe/hopefully that’s indirectly inspiring others to make positive changes in their own life & the world around them. I don’t want to influence or inspire people in such a way that they compare their own life to mine, or themselves to me. But rather, inspire them to challenge themselves to become the kind of human they want to be. The kind of human their five-year-old self would be proud of. A better version of themselves!

5. T op three Instagram accounts we should be following . . . Ooh! There are too many good ones to choose from! For all things travel, I love @doyoutravel For yoga inspiration & pose ideas, definitely @aloyoga And for food, @elsas_wholesomelife or @lonijane

(Preferably spotting some wild dolphins while I’m splashin’ about!) A huge fruity & fresh breakfast with a girlfriend. Soaking up some vitamin D & rolling in the sand, hanging with good friends & good music on the beach. Maybe a beach umbrella, some brightly coloured inflatables & a loudspeaker busting some epic tunes. A walk around to jump rock. A picnic lunch with my girls overlooking Burwood Beach. A bike ride to check the surf & grab a juice from Hunter St Mall. (Beetroot, lemon, ginger & apple is my fave!). Then a sunset yoga class at the Yoga Loft followed by dinner with my family at home (mum is a really good cook), a cuddle from my baby boy, Koa (my beautiful husky), a hot shower, then bed to do it all again the next day! :) Yay!

1. What do you love most about Newcastle?

4. How do you hope to inspire those around you?

The coffee, coastal vibe & ‘little city’ buzz.

I think my number one rule has always been to back myself & believe in what I’m doing & what I want to put out there in the world. I hope I can inspire other people to be brave enough to own their creative voice. But I also think it’s important to be humble enough to adapt & constantly challenge your skills & ideas. Running a creative business is not easy, it takes huge commitment and resilience to failure, & the ability & willingness to be constantly learning & evolving. Hopefully my approach to my work in that regard is inspiring.

2. What does being an influencer mean to you? Being an influencer means being brave enough to put yourself out there creatively, & making yourself totally vulnerable to the world in the process. It’s a small price to pay though, for living an inspired life & hopefully inspiring other people in return.

3. Who influences you & why? Artisans, fashion designers & other artists. I’m also influenced by other self-employed creatives & makers who are pushing the boundaries between art, commerce & design through digital/social media & are bringing their passion & vision into a viable space. Seeing other people create their dream jobs & really work for it inspires me to do the same.

ortunes have been won and lost, racing legends immortalised in time, lovers found, friendships forged and memories created that last a lifetime. For more than 100 years, the Newcastle Jockey Club has been the social hub of the Newcastle and Hunter region, a place where socialites frock up in their finest and enjoy a day on the lawns. The club stages 34 race meetings per year at Broadmeadow, along with the Autumn and Spring Racing Carnivals and the Boxing Day races in December. A must on race enthusiasts’ calendars across the countr y is the Spring Racing Carnival, with Fashions on the Field attracting more than 150 contestants, competing for a range of fantastic prizes. Fashionistas compete in four categories and must adhere to the strict racing fashion criteria – outfits should be classic race wear for the season of spring with consideration to style, originality and suitability. A headpiece is a must and should be complemented by shoes, bag, a neat hairstyle and perfect posture.

FOR THE FRILL OF IT The statement frill adds a touch of femininity & volume to this season’s necklines, sleeves and hemlines. Influenced by Spanish señoritas & Caribbean nights, the frill creates a whimsical, lively & ultra-pretty look.
