MITCH’S BEST FRIEND...
JOEY COOPER BY RYAN KLIMCAK Joey Cooper returns to Bismarck for his second year as an assistant coach. Cooper served on the Bismarck Bull Moose coaching staff during the 2020 season. He joins fellow friend and former Bull Moose coach, Mitch Gallagher, as a member on Will Flynt’s staff. “Being able to work with Mitch and coach together was probably the most influential thing,” Cooper said. “Picking each other’s brains and having our brains picked by our players really helped me grow last summer.” In 2015, the California native started his collegiate career at Palomar College, posting a .342 batting average with 41 hits, 22 runs, 14 walks, 13 RBIs and seven stolen bases. It was there that Cooper played for head coach, Buck Taylor, who Cooper says impacted his future coaching career. “Buck Taylor was the biggest influence for me wanting to coach. I loved how he ran his program at Palomar as a “player’s coach,” he was able to have his guys play for him and buy into what he was preaching.” After transferring to California State University Northridge (CSUN), Cooper had his best season with the team as a redshirt junior. His 2018 season with the Matadors saw him bat .246 with 35 runs, 47 hits, six doubles, two triples, five home runs, 31 RBI and a .389 on-base percentage. Cooper ranked fifth nationally in hit by pitches with 21. Cooper graduated in 2019 from CSUN. Cooper played his summers in the West Coast League for the Portland Pickles, spending three seasons with the team. He holds the team’s all-time records in total games, at-bats and stolen bases. He developed a positive relationship with hitting coach Mark Magdaleno “Playing in the West Coast League helped me develop as a hitter in regards to perfecting my craft with approach at the plate,” said Cooper. “With that being said, having a great hitting coach in Mark Magdaleno really helped me understand the swing more in depth.” Coming from the west coast to North Dakota was quite the change for Cooper, but he considers Bismarck a second home. The community, the fans, and the Larks front office are a few of the many reasons Cooper believes Bismarck is special. “It isn’t just the fans that pack the yard every night. It’s also the people in the community that are so welcoming and friendly,” Cooper said. “They say if you love your job you’ll never work a day in your life and that’s what the Larks and being in Bismarck is for me. It was a no-brainer coming back here for the summer.”

BY JAMISON BROWN If you ask Cole Roberts about baseball he’ll tell you -- baseball is everything. His deep rooted love for the game started before Cole could even walk. Some of his first and fondest memories involve a bat, a ball and a glove. But it’s no surprise that baseball and Cole go hand-in-hand. Cole is the son of former big leaguer and current Los Angeles Dodgers field manager, Dave Roberts. He says many people assume he was forced to play baseball because of his father’s success. But Cole disagrees. When asked about his father, Cole says his dad was always supportive and never pushed him to do anything he didn’t want to do. Instead, he encouraged Cole to try everything. But just like his father, Cole found solace in the game of baseball. Now he looks to his dad as a mentor and friend.
HOMETOWN CARDIFF, CALIFORNIA
“Having someone that knows exactly what you are going through has been huge for me,” Roberts said. That’s part of the reason why Cole decided to continue his baseball career in Bismarck. Dave Roberts and Larks field manager, Will Flynt have known each other for years. Cole says his dad always talks highly of Flynt, his passion for player development and his love of the game. In addition, two of Cole’s college teammates played for the Bismarck Bull Moose last year. They told Cole the coaching staff and ballpark atmosphere in Bismarck was memorable and exciting. And Cole couldn’t agree more. “We have a great group of guys here and I think we are definitely going to have a great season,” Roberts said. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to further my baseball career here in Bismarck.” FUN FACT: Cole has started listening to country music since he arrived in Bismarck AND.... he likes it.

HELPERS SOUP CAFE BY CLAYTON VAN HORN
This year the Larks and H.A. Thompson and Sons partnered together to create the Larks Care program. The Larks Care program focuses on giving back to the community by volunteering and providing a helping hand to local organizations. The Larks kicked-off the program in May at Heaven’s Helpers Soup Cafe. Lark employees spent the day cutting onions, taking orders and serving customers. Mark Meyer, Founder and Executive Director of Heaven’s Helpers said, “These are a great group of guys and girls. They were diligent with every task. We even had a group this morning that spent two hours cutting onions. They shed a few tears, but they didn’t complain once.” Clark and Merifeather lent a helping wing too, filling Heaven’s Helpers with lots of laughs and smiles. Heaven’s Helpers Soup Cafe serves more than 200 people per day, six days a week. They provide homemade soups, sandwiches, desserts and a salad bar for patrons. They have private showers and a laundry facility for the homeless plus a computer area to find work and a fellowship hall where people can relax and visit. The food at the cafe is free, but showers, laundry and computers are available with “Soup Cafe Bucks.” Patrons can earn cafe bucks by washing dishes, cleaning or serving food. Heaven’s Helpers Soup Cafe believes in the importance of offering a hand up, not just a hand out. If you know an organization in need of a helping hand, tell us! KINGDOM BY MEG THOMPSON THIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT... Everyone has heard of Ivy Man and Ivy Woman, but have you heard about the IVY KINGDOM? Reports from our local ballpark ranger claim that more mysterious creatures have been spotted in the ivy. During the off-season, our park ranger kept a close eye on the green shrubs that line the outfield wall. And to his surprise...he discovered a secret portal within the ivy. Soon after his discovery he watched a princess, a unicorn and a dinosaur emerge from the depths of the green Ivy Kingdom. Now every Sunday, YOU can experience the magic of the Ivy Kingdom too. Try and catch one of the magical BNC National Bank baseballs from Ivy Man or take a picture with the German Princess, Princess Lena. Let’s not forget Teddy the T-Rex and Fluffy the Unicorn. They try to blend in with the fans, but usually cause some commotion in the stands! We love our Ivy Kingdom friends, but at the end of the game we need your help to send them back into the mystical and magical ivy. If you see Ivy Man, Princess Lena, Teddy or Fluffy, be sure to let the Park Ranger know so he can bring them back to the ivy -- safely. Join the Ivy Kingdom and help our Park Ranger every Sunday during our BNC National Bank Family Days at the ballpark.

It felt really weird. I’ve never been able to be in front of a crowd and perform the way we do at the ballpark, but I am so blessed to be part of this. I feel really good. It is going well. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR FANS?
Honestly I think the crowd is great! I encourage them to engage during the game more and clap for EVERYTHING that is happening. They should sing a long and bust a move! WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING A LARKETTE?
I love being with the girls. It is a fabulous time. They have taught me so much and what it takes to be a part of a team. Each Larkette has a special place in my heart. I believe they are all unique in their own way. Everyone is so wonderful and the Larkettes always show me kindness. I love being a part of the team and the Touchmark staff is absolutely amazing. HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU ARE DANCING?
I feel alive! Being at practice and laughing with the other ladies truly special. The memories are so important to me and I know that the other ladies feel the same way.

Some of you may recognize the famous tagline coined by Al Michaels when the U.S. National Hockey Team beat the #1 seeded Soviet National Team at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympic Games to advance to the medal round. This was a hugge milestone for the U.S. and for many Americans, it was an ideological victory in the Cold War -- a definitive miracle. The Larks being back to normal this year is a miracle. Despite the ever present COVID-19 virus, we are persevering to get back to sold out, high fives and FUN with everyone! Miracles happen everyday. That has been proven over and over again. But we can’t make miracles happen by ourselves. That’s where YOU come in! This year we are back speeding through the stadium in a dash to collect cash from fans. When you hear the announcer say “Miracle Minute” get your cash ready and hold it up high. Together with First International Bank and Trust, we’ve made it our mission to help local non-profits for a MIRACLE MINUTE during the first inning of every home game this season. Fans like YOU can make a positive impact on individuals, families and our community every game. All money raised during the Miracle Minute will go to the non-profit of the night to assist them in achieving their mission in our community. The First International Bank and Trust Miracle Minute raised a total amount of $29,878 from 2018-2020. This year we need your help to keep making a difference. Your generosity makes miracles happen. AS THE PANDEMIC DARKENED SOCIETY AND THE FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN LINGERED... Duane Issacson found himself caught in a pickle. He knew he was considered high risk to the virus, so he needed an environment that would be both entertaining and safe to work at. The former North Dakota state job service employee began to search for his next journey. This led Issacson to the Larks, connecting him with his passion for baseball and the outdoors. A former Scheels 7-pack holder, Issacson was familiar with the Larks and their ability to create a one-of-a-kind baseball experience. During the 2020 season, he decided to become a game day staff member. Since then, he has become a staple at the ballpark -- serving guests in the clubhouse area -- and even singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.” When not cheering for the Larks, Issacson can be found rooting on his other favorite sports teams, the Vikings and the Twins. Duane says he has been a Minnesota sport fanatic since he was young, going to many Twins games with his family. Now, Issacson looks to use his position with the Larks to instill his love for the game in the next generation. To be “Tough as Nails”, Issacson notes that one needs to have a positive mindset. He mentions that anything worth doing is worth doing well. As he continues to exceed his job expectations, Issacson encourages the Larks players and other staff members to have a great attitude and always do their best.
