Titan top story: WELCOME TO CAMPUS!

WHAT TO DO AND NOT TO DO AROUND A SERVICE ANIMAL. Service Animals are dogs (or sometimes miniature horses) trained to do work or tasks for people with disabilities. Tasks may include guiding a person with limited vision, alerting a person who has limited hearing, protecting a person with a medical condition, or calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. What should you do if you see a person with a service dog on the CCBC campus? •

Smile and speak with the service dog’s handler like you would any other person on campus.

Do not pet or distract the Service Dog or try to call it by name.

It’s fine to ignore the Service Dog entirely and just speak with the person.

Policy on Nondiscrimination Community College of Beaver County does not discriminate in admission or employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, disability, veteran’s status, age, or national origin. Inquiries may be directed to CCBC’s Title IX Coordinator, VP Human Resources, One Campus Drive, Monaca, PA 15061, 724-480-3379 or Section 504 Coordinator, Vice President -Student Affairs and Enrollment, One Campus Drive, Monaca PA, 15061, 724-480-3423.

Titan top storIES PIZZA WITH THE PRESIDENT IS BACK! This year a new CCBC tradition continues with the first installments of Pizza with the President. Interim President Dr. Roger Davis is seen here serving free pizza to students in the Titan Café on September 10, 2018. The events serve as an opportunity for students to get face-to-face interactions with our president, as well as connecting with each other over food. There are two remaining opportunities – Wednesday 10/10 at 12 PM in the Aviation Science Center, and Monday 11/12 at 12:30 PM in the Health Science Center Lobby.

CCBC’S HOSTS GUESTS FROM COLUMBIA! A delegation of nearly a dozen business and community leaders from Bucaramanga, Colombia visited CCBC’s campus on Friday, September 21st. Visiting as part of an international engagement program with the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Latin American Studies, the guests heard from John Goberish, our Dean of Workforce Development and Continuing Education, as well as representatives from Shell and the Beaver County Chamber of Commerce, as they sought to learn about both the impact of the Shell petrochemical plant, as well as how CCBC has positioned itself as both an innovator in education, and as a partner in collaboration with business to provide the workforce that is needed for developing industries in the region.

Titan top storIES FRESH CHECK DAYS A SUCCESS! On October 2nd and 3rd, the Student Life Office, Student Government Association and the Counseling Center successfully held their first annual combined Fresh Check Day and Club Fair. Fresh Check Day, a program of the Jordan Porco Foundation, is an uplifting mental health fair that included peer-run interactive booths, free food, music, and exciting prizes. Student participants were able to win a 32” TV if they participated in the booths. Alongside this year’s Fresh Check Day, our clubs and organizations were able to recruit new members as well during the festivities.

STUDENTS VISIT ST. BONAVENTURE UNIVERSITY On October 19, three CCBC students participated in a coordinated visit to St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, New York. As part of a partnership coordinated by former CCBC Board of Trustees Chair, Del Goedeker, CCBC students are able to directly transfer associate’s degrees in several majors into four-year program opportunities at SBU, while receiving generous scholarship support through the Goedeker Foundation. In their visit, our CCBC students were able to get a tour of the picturesque campus, and hear from staff in the SBU Veterans, Admissions, and First Year Experience offices. They also enjoyed lunch at one of the dining halls on campus. A great time was had by all attendees.

WRITERS CLUB PRESENTS Midnight Contemplations | By Kali Laughlin

But these mental inventions do not flow from my pencil as I plead that they would,

In these late-night ponderings my mind turns to mush only to mold itself into something new. This process extends for hours, a constant of creating, crumbling, and restarting. My eyes droop with sleep with each new ideation, peering at the clock every ten minutes. My mouth stretches with yawn after yawn, but my brain churns out another foundation, begging me to fling out of bed to write.

for the correlation between my mind and a blank page ceases to exist when I wish to bring it to reality. These images inside my imagination do not take on a real form, yet continue to pester me once I’ve laid down to sleep. I yearn to capture these pictures on a piece of paper, to actualize them into existence. The words never materialize, thus I’m left wondering ‘til the still of the night, my mind alive, but my fingers dead to the world.

Titan top storIES VETERANS BREAKFAST A SUCCESS Once again CCBC hosted the annual Veteran’s Breakfast, a celebration of those who have served our country. Partnering with Senator Elder Vogle and WQED, volunteers fed over 300 veterans in the Dome on November 9th , with student volunteers providing a major lift to the event. Students helped serve breakfast, set-up and tear down, and nursing students were on hand to take blood pressure readings for the veterans and their guests at the event. WQED hosted a panel discussion led by Vietnam War veteran and local journalist and WQED personality Chris Moore, and showed a preview of a documentary being put together about the veteran experience returning after military service.

WRITERS CLUB PRESENTS Poem | By Weslie Fischer

Head throbbing relentlessly to the beat of my pulsing heart hands sweat profusely

to arise to the top and breathe in the thick warm air only to hold it tight in your lungs as you hurdle your lifeless

ear overwhelms my every instinct

body into the icy depths below

the steps lead toward a fatal jump

causing a colossal wave of water

as I climb tenderly to the top with shaky hands unsure of the impending drop into a blue abyss where so few return untainted from the slick piss-ridden chasm

to rain down on the public cement aching lungs scream out as feet smack the lining and thrust a heavy body towards the luring light above.

Titan top storIES CONGRATULATIONS, DR. DAVIS! On February 26th, the Community College of Beaver County’s Board of Trustees announced that it has appointed Dr. Roger W. Davis as the 9th president of the college, effective immediately. Dr. Davis has served as the interim president since May 2018 and also becomes the college’s youngest leader to-date. The unanimous decision was made at the February 26 Board of Trustees meeting, after an eight-month comprehensive review process for which the Board contracted with Compass Business Solutions, Inc. to conduct an objective, third-party assessment of the leadership capabilities and suitability for promotion of Interim President Davis for the role of President. Thank you to everyone in the CCBC community who participated in the process – the best is yet to come!

FEBRUARY RECAP - SPREADING & SHARING THE LOVE! CCBC Students, Faculty and Staff showed their commitment to the community throughout the month of February through two different initiatives. Throughout the month, students, faculty and staff contributed over 750 items to our CCBC SGA Food and Resource Pantry, competing in the Share the Love challenge. Winners from both the student and the faculty/staff pool were selected in a raffle at the end of the month. Another initiative focused on community outreach was our Spread the Love event, where students helped package CCBC-Cares donation kits for the Women’s Center of Beaver County, as well as writing cards of encouragement for those who use the Center’s resources. Those donations were delivered by CCBC Student Life staff on Valentine’s Day, and were appreciated by the Women’s Center staff. Great job CCBC!

By Julie M. Kunkel The sun grew clearly jealous as it could clearly see what was forming between us; Our love for one another outshined the star’s rays Nearly blinding everything in our path. The sound of his heart was my drug, the words that dripped from his mouth tasted like ecstasy, making me crave more. His eyes were windows to another world, and mine were the door to them. __________________________________________________________________________________________________

HIGH SCHOOL ACADEMIES (AVIATION)

The Health Academy students are gearing up for two exciting events in April. On April 5, our second year senior students will visit Allegheny General Hospital and observe open heart surgery from the gallery. They will speak with the surgeon or PA after the surgery and tour the research lab. On April 12, the first year senior academy students will be going to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and shadowing an RN for the day. They will observe the nurse performing assessments and passing medications and watch physician rounds as well as other tasks done on a daily basis. These are both wonderful, high-impact

Our Aviation Academy is going into its 4th year. In that time, the program has grown rapidly, with a shortage of pilots, air traffic controllers and a rapidly growing UAV (Drone) industry driving this growth. We are currently teaching classes at Aviation Sciences Center in Chippewa Township, Parkway West Career and Technology Center, and this fall we will be starting classes at Butler Graham airport in conjunction with Butler County Community College. Our Academy students take typical general education courses along with some general aviation courses, and many students start flying at one of 7 FBO’s (fixed base operators) that are part of our FAA training program. When they move on to CCBC as freshman they are already in a position to split off to courses leading to their specific degree. Our Faculty Champion, Nicole Fink, and team members Sylvester

learning opportunities for the senior students to participate in, and we are grateful for the partnership opportunities.

Our Faculty Champion at Aviation Science Center, Nicole Fink, is doing a great job representing our aviation programs on the AIM for the Future Fridays. She makes a general presentation that introduces potential students to our aviation programs. Sylverster Kubacki utilizes a operating desktop simulator and Cameron Sinclair has flying drones available. Both give the potential student hands on experience.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTS WHAT IS THE STEM ACADEMY AT CCBC? By: Jodi Carver Most of you already know that STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, but do you know what the STEM Academy is at CCBC? The STEM Academy includes junior and senior high school students from Beaver County who study Engineering, Process Technology or Coding on our campus. The students spend an hour and half each day in class here at CCBC and the rest of their day as high school students. Some of the classes that our Engineering students take are Calculus I & II, Robotics and Chemistry. The Robotics class is taught by our own faculty member who was trained in the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics program. Our Process Technology students take classes in the new million-dollar pilot plant that was just completed on our campus. They learn to use all of the equipment and handle

operations in a major manufacturing plant. They train for jobs in the petro-chemical, steel, food, and oil & gas industries. Finally, our Coding students learn Android App Development, Database Foundations and SQL Programming Language. These students gain a foundation in many other programming languages and can look to impact our society in a major way in the field of technology development. Our STEM Academy students can apply for PELL funding and scholarships to finance their education. Two of our STEM Academy students were recipients of the Shell Scholarship to study Process Technology this year. These high school students are not only saving money, but they are getting a jump on their college education. Do you know a high school student who would be a good fit for our STEM Academy? Contact Jodi.carver@ccbc.edu to find out more.

WHAT IS THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACADEMY AT CCBC? Our Criminal Justice High School Academy is finishing its first year. Currently we have 13 students, 10 females and 3 males, but the academy is steadily growing. It is nice to know that we still have young adults who are interested in the Criminal Justice field after some of the negative publicity. The students are now taking Juvenile Justice and Interview and Interrogation. Both are very interesting courses that address some of the current events commonly found in the field today. We discuss identifying the risk factors associated with juveniles and crimes involving juveniles. The students have been conducting research into the trends for juvenile crime. The ideas that the students report are viable options for reforming the Juvenile Justice system. In Interview and Interrogation, the students will be learning the techniques

to get a valid confession that will hold up in court. They explore various videos of suspects who have given confessions and some that were reporting a crime that they claim, they did not commit. The students are able to pick out some of the common physical characteristics and demeanor of a person who is being less than truthful. Additionally, with the help of Jared Boustead, we are C Oused N G Rto ATteach U L ATthe I O Nstudents S, purchasing DNA Kits that can be how CLASS OF 2019! to analyze DNA evidence.
