Edward Leavy was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. He joined the court in 1987 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Prior to his service on the Ninth Circuit, he was a district judge on the United States District Court for the District of Oregon. Leavy assumed senior status on May 19, 1997. His service ended on March 12, 2023, upon his death.[1]

Leavy graduated from the University of Portland with his bachelor's degree in 1950, and from Notre Dame Law School with his J.D. in 1953.[1]

Leavy was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on February 2, 1987, to a seat vacated by Otto Skopil, Jr. Hearings on Leavy's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on March 11, 1987, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on March 19, 1987. Leavy was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on March 20, 1987, and he received his commission on March 23, 1987. Leavy assumed senior status on May 19, 1997. His service ended on March 12, 2023, upon his death. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Susan Graber.[1][2]

District of Oregon

Leavy was nominated to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Oregon by President Ronald Reagan on March 26, 1984, to a seat vacated by Judge Robert Belloni. Hearings on Leavy's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 11, 1984, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) the next day. Leavy was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on April 24, 1984, and he received his commission on May 3, 1984. Leavy resigned from the district court on April 8, 1987, upon his elevation to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.[1][3] He was succeeded in this position by Judge Malcolm Marsh.
