Herbert Young Cho Choy (b. January 6, 1916 d. March 10, 2004) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. Choy was the first Korean-American to serve as a federal judge in the United States.[1][2] Choy became the first Asian American to serve on a federal appellate court with his 1971 appointment.[3] Choy died on March 10, 2004.


Federal Judicial Service

Nominated by Richard M. Nixon on April 7, 1971, to a seat vacated by Stanley Nelson Barnes; Confirmed by the Senate on April 21, 1971, and received commission on April 23, 1971. Assumed senior status on October 3, 1984. Service terminated on March 10, 2004, due to death.[1]
