An intelligent adaptive system should adjust the content in order to ensure faster and better performances in the learning process. Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is a popular design paradigm for distributed systems today but the high adaptivity and complexity of SOA implementations may also introduce additional sources of faults. We first describe typical steps in SOA to understand possible faults. Then, we provide a corresponding fault taxonomy according to the process of service invocation. Finally, we present possible benefits of our taxonomy for dependability enhancement in SOA-based systems.

Mobile applications are becoming increasingly widespread and complex. Many of these applications suffer from usability issues, including information overload, screen clutter, lack of task support and limited interaction mechanisms. Adaptive user interfaces (AUIs) have been proposed to address some of these usability issues. The aim of this paper is to investigate how AUIs can improve the usability of mobile applications. This paper discusses several simple types of adaptation that have been shown to yield significant usability benefits for mobile applications. Two case studies are presented to illustrate how an AUI can be incorporated into different types of mobile applications. This paper also discusses the lessons learned from these case studies and presents some implications for designing adaptive systems in the future.

Online advertisement is one of the major incomes for many companies; it has a role in the overall business flow and affects the consumer behavior directly. Unfortunately most users tend to block their ads or ignore them. MyAds is a social adaptive hypermedia system for online advertising and its main goal is to explore how to make online ads more acceptable. In order to achieve such a goal, various technologies and techniques are used. This paper presents a theoretical framework as well as the system architecture for MyAds that was designed based on a set of hypotheses and an exploratory study. The system then was implemented and a pilot experiment was conducted to validate it. The main outcomes suggest that the system has provided personalized ads for users. The main implications suggest that the system can be used for further testing and validating.

As modern software-based systems and applications gain in versatility and functionality, the ability to manage inconsistent resources and service disparate user requirements becomes increasingly imperative. In this paper, hierarchical control techniques is used for controlling a robotic manipulator. The proposed method is based on the establishment of a non-linear mapping between Cartesian and joint coordinates using fuzzy logic in order to direct each individual joint. The hierarchical control will be implemented with fuzzy logic to improve the robustness and reduce the run time computational requirements. Hierarchical control consists of solving the inverse kinematic equations using fuzzy logic to direct each individual joint. A commercial Microbot with three degrees of freedom is utilized to evaluate this methodology. A decentralized fuzzy controller is used for each joint, with a Fuzzy Associative Memories (FAM) performing the inverse kinematic mapping in a supervisory mode. The FAM determines the inverse kinematic mapping which maps the desired Cartesian coordinates to the individual joint angles. The individual fuzzy controller for each joint generates the required control signal to a DC motor to move the associated link to the new position. The proposed hierarchical fuzzy controller is compared to a conventional controller. The simulation experiments indeed demonstate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
