Irene Loretz


Graveside services for Irene Loretz of Grass Valley were conducted Monday, Nov. 3, at the Russian River Cemetery in Ukiah.

Mrs. Loretz died Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. She was 98.

She was born Nov. 10, 1904, in Westport, to Frank Wegner and Elizabeth Murphy. A short time later, her family settled in Ft. Bragg, where she attended grammar school. In 1913, the family moved to Ukiah, where they purchased a prune and pear ranch. She graduated from Ukiah High School and attended business school in San Francisco. She worked for the Union Lumber Company until she married Carl Hanson in 1942. They bought a ranch in Santa Barbara and raised citrus and avocados. She became a real estate agent and was active in the Children's Home Society. After her husband's death in 1964, she traveled extensively on cruise ships. She married John Loretz in 1971, and they moved to Oakmont, a retirement community in Santa Rosa. She enjoyed politics, bridge, lawn bowling, the San Francisco Giants and the stock market. Following her husband's death in 1992, she moved to Ukiah. In 1998, she moved to Grass Valley to be near her nieces, Eileen McLeran, Sheila McNallen and their families.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews-in-law Eileen and Mike McLeran of Nevada City, Sheila and Steve McNallen of Grass Valley, and Carol and Ed Jennings of Redwood City; step-granddaughter, Jennifer Loretz of Indianapolis; nephews and nieces-in-law Bob and Thelma Levy, and Don Jan Wegner of Ukiah, and John and Linda Levy of Laguna Beach; nephew, Frank Donnelly of Vancouver, B.C.; grandnephews Rob Levy of Carmel, Mark Levy of Ukiah, Jim Donnelly of Sacramento, and Eric Edlund of Boston; grandnephews and grandnieces-in-law Scott and Jori McLeran of Grass Valley, Michael and Laura McLeran and Brian and Dayna McLeran of Nevada City; grandnieces Jennifer Levy of Los Angeles, Laurie Wegner of Marbella, Spain, and Kerry McLeran of Nevada City; grandniece and grandnephew-in-law, Brynna and Adrian Columb of Grass Valley, and great-grandnephews Christion and Hayden McLeran; and great-grandnieces Emma Levy, Cecilia Columb, Tayloranne, Katie and Abi McLeran. She was preceded in death by her sister, Genevieve Levy; brothers Frank, Willard, and Ed Wegner; and stepson, Michael Loretz.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
