The quality control of drugs has an important role in public health, in ensuring the efficacy and safety of medicines. In the public health system, compounding pharmacies play a vital part. They provide medicines tailored to the individual patient, for example dermatological products and specific doses for children. Unfortunately, many cases of compounded products falling below the minimum quality standard have been reported in Brazil. In this study, the quality of compounded 150 mg fluconazole capsules was assessed and the results were compared with values stipulated in the Brazilian pharmacopoeia. The results suggest that, while it is certainly possible to prepare products meeting pharmacopoeial specifications, there are pharmacies where the quality control is deficient or nonexistent. Fluconazole is an important drug in combatting fungal infections. The use of fluconazole in dosage forms manufactured without high standards of quality control is strongly linked to treatment failure and cases of intoxication, as well as the emergence of resistant microorganisms. This highlights the urgent need for process improvement in compounding pharmacies. There are validated methods that can be successfully employed for routine quality control analysis that can be implemented by any compounding pharmacy.

Characterization of nucleoside and non-nucleoside human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reverse transcriptase inhibitors conformers, NRTIs and NNRTIs, respectively, is fundamental for an improved treatment of infected individuals. Three conformers in lamivudine I powder are quickly identified in this work by assignment of some Raman peaks to their vibrational frequencies, as obtained by first principles quantum chemical calculations. The method is proposed as a practical procedure for non-destructive identification, analysis, and process monitoring of NRTIs and NNRTIs conformers.

Statins are effective and often-prescribed drugs for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. This study shows a simple and fast method validation by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chro-matography in the linear range 28 to 52 mg/mL to quantify lovasta-tin, pravastatin sodium or simvastatin in bulk drug or dosage forms. Statins were determined using a C8 endcapped column (250 3 4 mm, 5 mm), isocratic mobile phase of acetonitrile and 0.1 % phos-phoric acid (65:35), 308C, ultraviolet–diode array detection at l 238 nm and 1.5 mL/min flow for lovastatin and simvastatin and 1.0 mL/min for pravastatin sodium. The developed method is fast, simple, reliable and shows appropriate linearity (r> 0.999), accur-acy (98.8–101.6%), precision (relative standard deviation <2%) and selectivity toward placebo and/or degradation products in very similar chromatographic conditions for all statins.

Dessa forma, após o encerramento do primeiro semestre letivo de 2020 no modo Ensino Remoto Emergencial (ERE), percebeu-se a necessidade de criação de uma disciplina, sob oferta experimental e optativa. O objetivo era abordar temáticas orientativas com a finalidade de acolher, ambientar e integrar o ingressante ao Curso de Farmácia da UFMG. Spherical particles of hydroxypropyl methacrylate/ethylene glycol methacrylate copolymer were synthesized in-house for use in size-exclusion chromatography. The porous hydrophilic material was packed in glass and stainless steel columns to evaluate their chromatographic performance. The support particles were small (approximately 20 A), and the average pore size was in the low range of mesopores (approximately 100 A). The packed columns were calibrated by using polysaccharide dextrans, showing a good range of separation for molecular weights between 10000 and 600000 daltons. The packing material appears to separate the large molecules through the size-exclusion mechanism. Polysaccharides and polypeptides dissolved in adequate mobile phases were injected into the packed column. The separation of the macromolecules was consistent with the size-exclusion mechanism. Application of the packing material to the separation of small molecules (alkyl alcohols) was also investigated.

O comércio de plantas medicinais e produtos fitoterápicos encontra-se em expansão em todo o mundo. Uma portaria lançada recentemente pelo Ministério da Saúde busca regulamentar a produção dos fitoterápicos comercializados no Brasil. Com o objetivo de contribuir com a farmacovigilância deste setor, iniciamos um programa de avaliação do material fitoterápico comercializado em Minas Gerais. Foram analisadas 27 amostras de camomila, procedentes de farmácias, ervanarias e mercados, quanto à identidade, pureza e presença dos constituintes ativos. Apesar de todas as amostras serem constituídas da genuína Matricaria recutita, na maior parte os capítulos florais estavam muito destruídos, conseqüência de manuseio excessivo ou má conservação. Foram detectados contaminantes em todas as amostras, estando insetos presentes em 63% daquelas comercializadas em farmácias. Somente cerca de metade das amostras apresentaram os constituintes dos óleos essenciais, necessários à atividade antiinflamatória ...

We investigated in vitro skin penetration and permeation of fluconazole from emulsions containing different penetration enhancers. Fluconazole permeation was high (15-65% of the applied dose) across hairless mouse skin and low (8-9%) across pig ear skin. Permeation across mice skin from a formulation containing propyleneglycol and isopropyl myristate was significantly higher than that observed with the paraffin oil and propyleneglycol or Transcutol emulsions. With pig skin, the paraffin oil or isopropyl myristate and propyleneglycol emulsions showed similar skin permeation and penetration. However, these emulsions provided epidermal concentrations higher than the minimal inhibitory concentrations for most dermatophytes.

Os constituintes fenólicos, de ação espasmolítica, foram detectados em somente cerca de 20%. Os resultados com a camomila indicam a precariedade com que as plantas medicinais e fitoterápicos vêm sendo comercializados e confirmam a necessidade urgente de vigilância destes produtos no Brasil.
