The fact that certain cultures and religions produced a way of life which, for the sake of self-perfection, expected its adherents to withdraw from various obligations to the world and to enter into the organisational structure of a monastic community obviously represents a constant anthropological foundation. The spectrum of monastic life within these various cultures was extremely diverse in its manifestations. It was the result of a high degree of flexibility in the face of constantly changing ideas about piety, social needs and concepts of community and
individuality.
However, an interreligious study with the aim of a scholarly analysis of comparable key elements across different monastic cultures does not exist yet. The editors as well as the authors of this volume are particularly interested in how monastic life was realised communally in many ways according to fixed norms and rules, how it shaped the understanding of community and civilisation and therefore made a decisive contribution to the formation of our cultural identity.

Prayer is present in almost all social areas, discourses and medial
formations of the Middle Ages. It bridges the border between this world
and the hereafter, contributes to the medialisation of salvation and
grace, and occupies a position that is as central as it is rich in
prerequisites within the religious constructions of reality and order of
the time. The historical scope of prayer is strikingly disproportionate
to the little attention it receives within medieval research. This is
where this thematic booklet comes in: it profiles prayer as an object
whose cultural-historical relevance has yet to be discovered. Especially
its ubiquity in medieval society argues for a profitable and only
interdisciplinarily viable research programme.

The eminent significance of the conscience for Luther’s reformatory orientation process has been undisputed since the beginnings of the 20th century. The article presents some aspects of the Lutheran conception of conscience with particular accent upon his reference to writings attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux: The human self-awareness that results from the examination of conscience, the indwelling of God in the conscience, and the calming of the soul via the purification of conscience, were taken as central points of the Bernardian traditions, which became especially influential for Luther.

The article deals with the twelfth-century text entitled Disputatio cuiusdam iusti cum Deo, a terse dialogue between God and a human person enraptured in a vision. Transmitted in nine manuscripts, the text sets out prerequisites for the communication between man and God, treats the relationship between divine experience and prayer, and discusses the interrelation between worldly responsibility and transcendent reward. The current article seeks to present this largely unknown text in the form of a critical edition and translation, to illuminate several details regarding its history, and not least to briefly undertake an interpretation of its contents.

This study presents the metaphoric usage of conscience as a book from its beginnings in the Christian late antiquity to its decline in the 18th century. It was commonly believed that everything a human had ever done, said or thought was recorded in this Book. At first, the Book of Conscience was exclusively depicted as a testimonial at the Last Judgement and therefore associated with the Book of Life. In parallel to the conceptual development of independent conscience in the High Middle Ages, the belief became prevalent that a look in one’s own Book of Conscience even in earthly life was not only possible but mandatory. This obligation was soon accompanied by the idea that the look into the Book of Conscience not only served the perusal and therefore self-awareness, but also the rectification of the read and thus self-perfection. The own biography became the object of consistent reflection. In this study, sermons, religious writs of admonishment, theological treatises, diaries, hymns, and multiple other genres of text are taken into account. In its entirety, it allows a multi-faceted view on the developments of the metaphoric depiction of the Book of Conscience from its first emergence until its eventual disappearance.

The subject of this article is a short exhortation for monks, which was written at the end of the 15th century in the monastery of Blaubeuren – in a time, when the Swabian abbey was part of the reform of Melk. The text, which is handed down to us only in unique form, is presented here in edition and translation. Its specificity that distinguishes him from other essentially comparable texts lays in the systematically arrangement of the material. Its numerical order stands noticeably in the tradition of the reform of Melk, which was influenced essentially by scholars of the University of Vienna.
