Published by the Supreme Lodge of the Danish Sisterhood of America, (Dansk Søster Samfund) as its Official Publication.

There are many celebrations in July and Canada Day and 4th of July are probably the largest.

Canada Day is July 1st celebrating the colonies Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada being united as Canada in 1867. In 1869 Prince Rupert’s land joined the Confederation, British Columbia in 1871, fol lowed by Prince Edward’s Island in 1873. The last province to join was Newfoundland in 1949. Canada Day is celebrated around the world, to include England.

As you are probably aware Denmark is the only country outside the United States who officially celebrates Independence Day, 4th of July. Norway, Ireland and Australia also cele brates the 4th, but not like we do in Denmark. Denmark has been celebrating 4th of July since 1909 because of a suggestion from Dr. Max Henius, a Danish immigrant who was vacation ing in Denmark, that a Danish-American Day be proclaimed, and 4th of July was selected. The acreage at Rebild was purchased in 1912 and the celebration has taken place here since then. This year H.M the Queen of Denmark will be at tending, so if you are attending, please give our Sisterly regards.

I want to thank everyone for being patient with our National Convention announcements. We are working on all aspects, but it is a huge undertaking as some of you are aware of, as we have to plan the meetings, and all of the logistics of registration, accommodations, food, entertain ment and other details. Now is an excellent time for your lodge, or District, to consider hosting the next National Convention in 2027.

Velkommen

Dear Sisters,

As you likely just read in the President's column, the 2023 Danish Sisterhood National Convention will be held at the Radisson Blu at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN next October. If you aren't familiar with the area, Bloomington is adja cent and easily accessible from both Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

As a St. Paul resident, I am very excited to welcome all of you to our Twin Cities! When I was little, we would take trips up to the Twin Cities to visit my Aunt and Uncle. And of course, we would go to the Mall of America. It really is spectacular when you're that small to see such a large mall with amusement park and all! Now, it's just another mall to me, but every once in awhile, that magical memory does return. I also remember driving through the Twin Cities on one of the trips and gazing in awe at all of the beau tiful trees through a large metropolitan area--it always stuck with me and after moving here almost 6 years ago, I still gaze at our beautiful trees in awe. There's also quite a lot of history in the Twin Cities and of course, the charm of the Mississippi River. I look forward to seeing many of you next fall and to sharing all of the great things about our cities.

Remember, send along updates, news, stories, history articles, photos and more!

Until next time,

Lauren C. Nielsen, Editor editor@danishsisterhood.com

Bits and Pieces from Minnesota -

I am excited!!! Being a member of the only lodge in Minnesota (Amber Lodge #186) we are so excited to welcome you to our great state for the 2023 National Convention. Al though our lodge is close to 3 hours from the convention site, we are still excited about you coming to Minnesota – in the fall when it is beautiful!! We hope many of you are making plans to attend.

These past months, the trustees have been reaching out by phone to lodge presi dents just to touch base with each lodge and let you know that we think about you and are concerned about you. It has been so much fun. I was a little apprehensive about calling people I don’t know, but you have all been warm and welcoming when I called. I hope the presidents we have talked to have enjoyed this as much as we have. We have learned about your lodges, about you and hopefully have given you some help if needed or just let you know we are there if you need us.

I attended my first district convention (Midwest District) as a National Officer. I en

joyed meeting new Sisters and sharing what your National Board has been doing. What an exciting day and wonderful event. Lastly, but just as important, is the Betty Hansen Continuing Education/Cultural Heritage Grant. The August deadline is fast approaching. This is a grant for members or members’ children enrolled in college less than full time, or taking a workshop or seminar, or enrolled in a course/workshop pertaining to the Danish language or culture. The Danish Sisterhood gives up to 10 of these awards per year. Up to five of them are given in Sep tember (due date August 31). Many times we have no applicants. If you or your daughter/ son is enrolled in a course or workshop con sider applying for this grant. For more infor mation, go to www.danishsisterhood.org and under the pull down menu “What We Do” go to Scholarships and Grants. You will find the application there. If you have further ques tions, don’t hesitate to contact me (trustee2@ danishsisterhood.com or 612-390-1374) and I will try to help you.

We suggest that you wait with making your reservation as we are receiving a special rate but cannot activate it until closer to convention time. I wish you all Happy Canada Day and Happy Independence Day

Update from Des Moines Lodge #102

Our April meeting was held in the Rodholm room at Grandview University. We shared some good memories from the Heartland District con vention held in Des Moines. It was hosted by the Sisterhood District board of which most were our members. Our SH lodge #102 will be hosting the next convention.

May 1st was the date of our SH brunch with about 68 present. We served our traditional egg dish, fruit, pastries, and punch. We had our Dan ish lottery with 100 tickets to sell.(cost was low) Winners went home with prizes and plants. Carol Rudisill and grandchildren had fun calling the num bers. Half of our profit will go to charity. Our six month collections were sent to the Danish Ameri can Museum. This month we also had a bake sale in connection with Luther Memorial’s garage sale. June was a potluck with 3 guests and 24 members present. A river boat trip was planned for July 30th. A member suggested buying items

Resolution: Jeanette Ragner

The oldest member of Dronning Margrethe Lodge #15 passed away on May 10 at the age of 98. Jeanette joined our Lodge in 1988. She was an active member, serving as our Lodge trea surer. She often shared her home as a place for a monthly meeting—especially for our February meetings where she served delicious Valentine treats. Many of our Lodge officers were installed in Jeanette’s living room.

Jeanette also served as treasurer for the Nordic Council of Wisconsin, the organization that for many years has put on the local Scandi navian Festival.

Jeanette worked with the West Allis/West Milwaukee School District here in Wisconsin for 23 years. After retiring she traveled widely and

from the SH newsletter. Since member Linda Holz , a national board member, is in charge of the Bu tikken she can free us from shipping charges. We initiated 4 of our new members who shared their Danish stories with us. Ken Paulsen was born in Denmark. His wife Jane and mother Edith were long time members of our lodge. He is anxious to go on the SH tour in August. Barbara Rinell fondly remembers her parents attending BH meetings in Clear Lake, Iowa. She loved going to the District convention and is so happy to find groups here. Joan Shaffer grew up in a Danish community with relatives sharing this background. She is happy to continue her traditions with us. Mary Benetti has embraced the Danish culture and her friends. She loved visiting Denmark! Several of our members will be going on the Sisterhood tour to Denmark in August.

enjoyed an active social life, belonging to several organizations in addition to the The Danish Sis terhood. Ask anyone who knew Jeanette about her and two words will always be used in the reply. She was one of the kindest and sweetest individuals you could ever meet.

Sadly some of our newer members nev er got to know Jeanette. She has spent the last several years in assisted living and eventually memory care watched over by her loving daugh ter Nancy who kept us up-to-date on how Jea nette was doing.

Jeanette will be remembered by those lucky enough to have known her, as a true sister. All who knew her are better off for having Jea nette in their lives.

Updates from Katherine Lodge #20, Kenosha, WI

Cake. Following our meal, we lit our fire and had our ceremonial burning of the witch to remove the evil spirits and send her soul back to the mountains of Germany.

It has been an active an exciting Spring and Summer for Katherine Lodge #20. We are fully embracing our sisterhood and friendship as we return to in-person gatherings. While we are able to meet in person, we are also live streaming our meetings so members can join from a-far and still be interactive. Following our lovely Midwest District Convention in May our lodge gathered for our Memorial Meeting on May 18th. Every May we make a point to honor our sisters who have passed in the last year. This year was particularly special as we had not been able to do this since 2019. We celebrated the lives of 8 sisters: Joan Andersen, Ethel Skowronski, Doris King, Joyce Preston, Antonette O’Neal, Mavis Agerholm, Di ana Kramsvogel, and Betty Mollerskov.

In June our sisters were invited to attend a reception hosted by The Museum of Dan ish America at the Racine Country Club. Every year the Museum Board holds its annual sum mer meeting somewhere different in the Unit ed States and they decided to travel to Racine, Wisconsin for this year’s gathering. On Friday, June 17, some of our members, their spouses and many other Danes gathered for a wonderful evening of cocktails and appetizers as well as conversation, friendship, and even an impromptu song!

As we near the end of June we always make a point to celebrate Sankt Hans in the only way we know how: with a party! As per tradi tion, we all gathered in the early evening at our Secretary, Kara Ernst-Schalk’s home for a potluck cookout with everything from classic brats and hotdogs to Vita Andersen’s wonderful Almond

As we look ahead to July, we are deep into the planning of our big fundraiser for the year. We will be hosting Skål & Sip: Wine Tasting and Raffle on July 29 from 5-8pm at Uncorked in Racine. Tickets will be $20 and can be purchased by emailing danishsisterhoodkenosha@gmail. com or by venmo-ing Anna Nielsen (user name: annamnielsen88). Tickets will also be available at the door! More information to come…

In August we will celebrate our 130th An niversary with a dinner at The Hobnob in Keno sha. Details are being finalized and will be shared once complete.

Updates from Flora Danica Lodge #177, Solvang, CA

Flora Danica Lodge #177 in Solvang cel ebrated its 57th anniversary in March of 2022. Twenty-two of us gathered for a delicious dinner of soups, salads, cheese plates, and cream puffs. Our meeting included a long list of anniversary pins for several members as well as discussion of plans for the District Convention to be held in Solvang in June. Following the meeting there was a lively game of Danish Jeopardy – always a fun (and competitive) evening.

Sadly, we have lost two long-time Flora Danica members this year: Lorna Hansen passed away in early March. Lorna had her 92nd birth day in January. She joined Flora Danica Lodge in 1989. Lucille Wulff had celebrated her 100th birthday on December 2, 2021, with a wonderful birthday party. She passed away in April. Lucille had been a member since January, 1975. Both Lorna and Lucille had wonderful lives and con tributed so much to not only Flora Danica Lodge and the Danish Sisterhood, but to their commu nities as well. They leave us all with amazing memories.

June included the California District Con vention held in Solvang, California. This year’s Convention was held after several Zoom meet ings in preparation and was an enormous suc cess. All of the California District Lodges helped with preparations, either with hands-on help and/ or financial contributions. Friday night’s opening was a Mexican themed event around the pool at Solvang Inn & Cottages. Treasurer Julie Vandecar was in charge of the margaritas and they were a hit! Saturday morning included Brotherhood and Sisterhood meetings, with a coffee break provid ed by the Los Angeles Lodge. A fabulous lunch of Danish Open Face sandwiches prepared by Flora Danica Lodge Vice President Mindi Chris tian, National Secretary Glenda Madrid, and their amazing crew of volunteers followed the meet ings. The “Make It, Bake It, Sew It, Grow It” table was overflowing with items (tables had to be added!) and brought in a record-breaking sales total. New officers were installed. Saturday evening was an open house at the Elverhøj Mu seum of History & Art in Solvang, where visitors

gathered to enjoy light refreshments, beverages, and viewing of the current exhibit on Greenland. Since this year’s Convention was held in June, out of town visitors were able to enjoy the annual Grundlovsdag put on by the Solvang Brother hood Lodge held on Sunday, which included a BBQ at Hans Christian Andersen Park. Delicious food and a wonderful time was had by all. Plans are already in the works to hold the 2023 Califor nia District Convention in Solvang once again. Our Lodge will take the month of July off and then be back in August with preparations for Danish Days in September.

Wishing all a happy Summer. Lisa Larsen Pedersen, Secretary

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

AvA Slocum

My name is Ava Slocum and I am honored to be receiving one of this year’s Betty Hansen Scholarships and the Past National Officers Scholarship. I am an incoming sophomore at Columbia University, where I’m majoring in En glish. I have had an incredible first year and am so grateful to have been able to move to New York City and start college in-person after the last few years of the pandemic.

This year, I have been involved as a staff writer and now an editor for our student news blog, and I’ve enjoyed participating in student theater this semester. Next year, I’m looking forward to taking more English classes and becoming more involved in student activities. I’m also hoping to study abroad during my junior year, possibly in England to study literature there. For my last two years of high school and my gap year in between high school and college, I appreciated being a part of Princess Marie Lodge #68 in Los Angeles, along with my mom Elizabeth Ferry Slocum and aunt Alexandra Berrie. Learning about my family’s background and our Danish history has been a huge blessing. I’m so thankful to the Danish Sisterhood for supporting me as I’ve worked to achieve my academic goals, and I truly appreciate the gift of this scholarship.

JoShuA BieBer

Hello, all fellow Danish Sisterhood members. I, Joshua Bieber, am currently going into senior year at the University of Georgia studying special education. At the moment, the plan is to stay an additional year to complete my mas ter's degree with a dyslexia endorsement, which provides reading and writing interventions for students in need using evidence-based practices. Moreover, I hope to move to Copenhagen after that, as it has been a childhood dream. Studying in Denmark has drawn me closer to the language, culture, and family ties back in the Spring of 2022. In Danish class, both of my parents met at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, so both sides have links in their unique ways to Denmark. I am thankful for this scholarship opportunity as it directly impacts college's financial burden on students with/without disabilities. Fur thermore, I hope to reinvest in the Danish/American community in the future.

Hej! My name is Meghan Hunt, the recipient of the Betty Hansen National Scholar ship. I am deeply humbled to have received this award amidst many other deserving candidates. Your support is monumental, a welcome encourage ment and validation of my future intentions.

This fall I begin my third semester of the UNM nursing program and will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2023. I intend to work locally in our labor and delivery unit after graduation, to gain valuable expe rience and ease a provider shortage area, before pursuing my final midwife ry degree. As a nontraditional student, it is a challenge to balance my aca demics and family responsibilities. I am doing my best to model discipline, hard work, and the value of our communities to my three young children

along the way. Recognition with this award allows me to show them what is possible and motivates me to persevere.

I come from a Jensen bloodline. My Great Grandmother was Swedish, causing a scandal when she married my Great Grandfather, a wild-spirited Dane. Settling into the Midwest, they embraced a life centered around family and farming. My Great Uncle followed, sailing alone from Denmark as a teenag er and embracing the unknown. Many traditions have been lost to us, but our wild sense of adventure, grit, and love of nature persists. Learning Swedish and Danish, with the knowledge shared by the Danish Sisterhood helps preserve and reconnect with my roots. Mange tak / tak så mycket.

Brooke crABtree

My name is Brooke Crabtree and I will be a senior this fall at Temple Univer sity. I am majoring in Communication Studies with a minor in Public Policy. Within this field I am very passionate about social justice and the role that policy plays in our society and governing systems. This past semester I had the wonderful opportunity to study abroad in Italy at the Temple University Rome campus. While in Rome, I had an internship with the Human Rights International Corner, a non-profit organization committed to promoting and ensuring human rights throughout all sectors. I wrote the English version of their monthly newsletter and assisted the social media team in research and content creation. This opportunity has made my interest in human rights and politics grow even stronger and someday I hope to work in a position where I can use my skills to help better my community. My mother and I had hoped to travel to Denmark while I was abroad, but due to COVID-19 restrictions we were unable to. My grandfather was born in Denmark and came to the U.S. in his 20s, getting involved in the Danish Brother hood soon after. I love to express my Danish heritage through cooking and baking and one of my favorite dishes to make is aebleskiver. In the next few years, I hope to experience my Danish culture firsthand by visiting Denmark.

Max Henius: Founder of Rebild July 4th Celebration and Brewmaster by Donna Christensen Thomas, National DSS Historian

The Rebild 4th of July celebration and the Rebild Danish-American Friendship Society was the topic of my last article. What I didn't realize was that it was the centennial celebration of this organization! Congratulations to such a wonder ful and important society. Numerous photos are posted to their website. Please check them out!

What I would like to concentrate in this article is the man who became the founder be hind the organization. I first became aware of this man several years ago when one of the Henius family descendants visited the Museum of Dan ish America's Genealogy Center and shared his experience in which he "was treated like royalty" when he attended the event shortly before his visit to Elk Horn.

In summary of his Wikipedia page, Max Henius was born in Aalborg on 16 Jun 1859 and died on 15 November 1935 while on a visit to his motherland. His parents were Emilie née Wasserzug and Isidor Henius (1820-1901), both Polish Jewish immigrants. His father, was born in West Prussia, now Poland, and emigrated to Denmark in 1837 and worked in the spirit dis tillery industry to improve and standardize pro duction. He co-founded a distillery in 1846. He also owned a small castle in Aalborg which since 2005 has been the site of a gourmet restaurant.

Max Henius was educated at the Aalborg Latin School and went on to study at the Poly technic Institute in Hanover, Germany. He also attended the University of Marborg, earning his PhD degree in chemistry in 1881. That same year his father sold the distillery and Max emi grated to the United States at age twenty-two, settling in Chicago.

Max had two brothers who remained in Denmark. Erik S Henius (1863-1926) became Chairman of the Danish Export Association. His brother Louis Henius (1870-1938) was the grandfather of the accomplished author Suzanne Brøgger.

Following employment by the Northern

Pacific Railway between Fargo, NE and Boze man, MT, he opened a drug store 1886. Next he formed Wahl & Henius, an institute for chemical and mechanical analysis with his former school mate, Robert Wahl in 1891. The Chicago-based Brewing Academy (Later known as the Wahl-In stitute of Fermentology became a premier brew ing school of the pre-prohibition era. It later ex panded with a brew master school that operated until 1921.

Mr. Henius became interested in Dan ish-American organizations in Chicago. Funds were being raised by Danish American to pur chase 2000 acres of heather-covered hills, locat ed in the Rold Forest, Denmark's larget forest. In 1912, Max Henius presented to the deed to His Majesty King Christian X as a permanent memo rial from Danish Americans. The Rebild National Park is located near the town of Skørping, north ern Jutland, Denmark. Every July 4 since 1912, except during the two world wars, large crowds have gathered in the hills of Rebild to celebrate American Independence Day. A bust is placed there in his memory.

In his personal life, he was married to Danish-born Johanne Loiuse Heiberg (18601934) on Jun 4, 1883. She was the daughter of medical doctor Emil Theodore Heiberg and Jo hanne "Hanne" Henriette Jacoba Schmidt. They had three children, Henry, Emil and Gerda. Their great-grandchildren include actors Keith Carra dine, Robert Carradine, Christopher Carradine, and Michael Bowen.

All these years later, Max Henius' and Wahl's work and expertise remains the standard in brewing and is the basis for numerous wellknown beer manufacturing companies for the fermenting process.

Hello Sisters,

I was asked to give a brief tutorial on how to access your online collections. I will preface this by saying that scanning all of the materials, in their entirety, was never the goal of the two year project I worked on. I have however tried to scan examples of many of the types of material in the collection. The goal of this project was to organize and catalog these items to allow for ease of access. You should now be able to view what the collection consists of and what is avail able from the national, district and lodge level of donated materials.

First you will navigate to https://danishmu seum.pastperfectonline.com where you will click on Advanced Search. In the Search Terms box, you will search “Danish Sisterhood of America” or “DSS” for all materials related to the Sister

The Museum of Danish America Accessing Online Collections

hood. This will be a lot. You may narrow your search with “Lodge #21” or your own lodge number. If nothing comes up, we may not have any materials pertaining to that lodge number. You can also search names, last name first, i.e. “Jensen, Jenny.” Please remember to use quota tion marks for whatever you decide to search. You can also use this for searching our whole collection.

As always, if you need assistance, or have more questions you can reach out to me by call ing the museum or emailing me at cjansdatter@ danishmuseum.org.

DSS Angel Member Status

The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels” posted. A couple of options are available:

• A change of beneficiary to: Danish Sisterhood of America or, • A change of beneficiary to one of the national schol arship funds. Be specific, ie: Betty Hansen Scholarship, Past National Officers, Camp Grant, etc.

If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or the National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change Form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you'd be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category can participate by donat ing $1,000 to the Danish Sisterhood of America. On behalf of our entire membership, we wish to thank and honor as our first Angels:
