Nealna Gylling, National President Winter Greetings – As I write this in January in Minnesota, we still haven’t seen “winter” as we usually do. We had brave souls waterskiing on some of the lakes in Minnesota on New Year’s Day instead of ice fishing. That is a big change for Minnesota!! Change is in store for the Danish Sisterhood Newsletter, also. We are excited to have a new editor working with Lauren on this February newsletter and taking over the editor position in the March issue. I am delighted to introduce Charlene Jensen as our new editor. Charlene is from the Portland, Oregon area and has been doing the Portland Danes (a sisterhood and brotherhood publication) for many years thus she comes to us with publishing experience. We are excited to work with Charlene as she begins this new endeavor, and we ask for your patience as she begins. Welcome, Charlene!! At the same time, we say a great BIG THANK YOU to Lauren for all her work on the Newsletter the last eight years. She has produced about 100 newsletters – WOW that is a lot!! Plus, she has done programs for 2 national conventions. What an amazing accomplishment. Thank you so much Lauren!! As I write this message on January 10 (although you won’t get it until February), the other change coming for the Danish community is the change in Monarchy. What an exciting time. I hope many of you were able to watch this historic event. I leave you with a couple of reminders: • The Denmark trip on September 10-21, 2024, will soon be open to anyone. Get your reservations in NOW while Sisterhood members have priority!! • And as always - the National Board is here for you. We need to know what we can do to help you and your lodge. PLEASE reach out to us.

Dear Sisters, The time has finally come. After eight years and 99 issues, this is my final one as Editor of the Danish Sisterhood News. It is a bittersweet moment. I am happy to be able to devote my time to other projects and to friends and family going forward, but I am also sad to be saying goodbye for now to all of you. I have met so many of you, either in person or virtually, and am grateful for the connections and memories I've been able to make. I cannot say goodbye without also saying thank you. Thank you to all of you for sharing your stories and updates and photos over the years--I hope you continue to do so with our next Editor! I'd also like to thank the three Boards of Directors that I've had the pleasure of working with--so many of these leaders have been wonderful mentors and have a near and dear place in my heart. I am also so very thankful for my Danish roots, which I owe to my dad, and I look forward to continuing on as a rank-and-file Danish Sisterhood member. Denmark and our Danish heritage is incredibly special and something worth sharing. I look forward to continuing to share and celebrate this part of all of us that brings us together. Please continue to do so yourselves as well! And now, I'd like to introduce our new Editor, Charlene Jensen. She'll be taking over the DSN starting with the next issue. You can read a little bit about her on the next page! Welcome Charlene! Goodbye for now! Lauren C. Nielsen, Editor editor@danishsisterhood.com

Membership Corner Happy New Year to all the sisters across the U.S. and Canada (and wherever you may be reading this newsletter.) I hope most of you have received your January Sisterhood News. I LOVE the President’s message- the part about “starting the new year with thought about what has happened and what you hope will happen in the future. How do we want to shape the next year? Are you satisfied with how things have gone? Are you wanting to make some changes? What kind of changes do you want to make: membership?-programs?-activities?-fundraising?” There is so much we need to think about when it comes to our Danish Sisterhood. We need to write down our goals and let all sisters know what they are! Susan and I are working on our goals for the membership focus for this coming year for National DSS. In the next month or so Susan Hoppough or Carol Rudisill will be contacting the presidents of local lodges. We are trying to find out what is happening in each local lodge, what you think is good enough, what you want to change, what you might want help with, and how we can best help/facilitate. I want everyone to know some of the questions we will ask so you can reflect on the answers. Of course, you can discuss anything in addition to the questions we are asking. How often does your lodge meet? How many sisters do you usually have at your meeting? Where do you hold your meetings? What kind of programs or activities has your lodge done in the past year? Do you do any fundraising? What do you usually fundraise for? Does your lodge have a full slate of officers? Do you change officers or do the same ones do the job year after year? When do you meet? Daytime? Evening? Weekend? Regularly scheduled? Irregular? Would you be interested in learning new ways to help grow your membership? Would you be interested in having meetings via Zoom or some such online program to help in membership growth? What is the average age of your lodge membership? ***Remember, making phone calls about your meeting and encouraging participation is one helpful tool. Plan a fun program and encourage everyone to bring a guest. You might be surprised at the outcome.*** Tak! Carol and Susan

Western Star Lodge #113 Member presented with 50 Year Pin Danish Sisterhood Western Star Lodge #113 met at the home of Diana Honore with eight members present. A delicious potluck dinner was served, including cherry pie for dessert. We had a great time talking about Christmas past and we also exchanged gifts, cards and cookies. We want to express a special "thanks" to Diana for hosting this event every year. She really goes all out to decorate and to make it very fun for everyone. Diana Honore received her 50 year pin for being a member of the Danish Sisterhood of America since 1974. She was presented her pin by Christine Rindone. We are so honored to have Diana in our lodge. Joyce Ryan will also receive her pin but was not present at this meeting. We are taking a three month sabbatical from meeting and will meet next on April 2nd. We will meet at the home of Sylvia McTavish. Our Danish Sisterhood lodge would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year in 2024. Submitted by Christine Rindone, Lodge #113

Updates from Ellen Lodge #21 HAPPY NEW YEAR. The years keep passing by so fast. Remember when we were all ready for the millennial and now it’s 2024. I hope your holiday was memorable and you have great plans for the New Year. I’m sure the last few months of the year was full for all the lodges starting with the DSS National Convention in Minnesota. Thank you to the National Board for a well-organized convention: great tour, fun entertainment and having it in such a friendly state. I had never been to the Mall of America, and having it so close to the hotel was quite a treat. Thank you to everyone that visited the DSS Mall and made purchases. Because of you, we had a lot less to pack up and take home. With 10% of our sales and the money made from our basket raffle, we were able to give a donation of $708 to MoDA. There were five of our Denver sisters that made the trip plus Linda Brooks, the National TreaDanish Sisterhood News, February 2024

surer. Congratulations to the new Board including Linda who will be the Treasurer for another four years. Ellen Lodge also had its monthly meeting on October 21. Pia Edgar and Birgitte Jappe Ross hosted the meeting at Pia’s home in Bailey, Colorado. The weather was perfect for a nice drive to the mountains making it conducive to a fairly good turnout. Lunch was a homemade soup and homemade bread. Sooo good. In November our lodge attended the craft fair at the Sons of Norway. Even though the traffic was slower than in years past, we still did quite well in sales. The following week 6 of the Sisters ventured to the Arvada Center in Arvada, CO to view Colcha embroidery. The distinct textiles were developed in New Mexico during the Spanish colonial period. The unique embroidery found its way to the San Luis Valley in Colorado where they 6

turned the art form into elaborate landscapes and stories important in their lives. We celebrated the end of Fall at Nissebo for our November meeting. Joanna Dubisher received her new membership pin and Linda Brooks received her 25 year pin. Congratulations to both. Ellen Lodge’s new logo stained fused glass was unveiled and will decorate one .of the walls at Mindy’s Nessebo. Election of officers took place at the November meeting. less leader as President. After filling our tummies with appetizers and desserts, we got busy making aebleskivers. Joanna Christensen made the batter, gave instructions on how to use the electric pans, and away we went. We divided into groups, had a chance to practice turning the batter (or observe) until they were good enough for sampling. We definitely found out which pans worked the best: Cucina hands down. Thanks Joanna for a fun end to our celebration. I hope you all celebrated the season with family and friends and are ready to conquer the New Year. I’m wishing you all a fabulous 2024. Malinda Ringo gave a presentation on Amber. Everyone was to bring their favorite amber jewelry. There was quite a collection of jewelry: bracelets, rings, earrings, pendants. Amazing how such beautiful jewelry originates from tree sap December we celebrated our Julefest gathering at the Nissebo. The room was decorated for the Christmas holidays from wall to wall and ceiling to floor. We had a very short meeting mainly to thank many of our Sisters who gave so much to the Lodge during the year, Thank you to our creative crafters: Mindy Brown, Pia Hansen and Gitte Jappe Ross. Thank you to Mindy for always letting us hang out at her Nissebo for meetings and crafting. Last, but not least, thank you to Birgitte Jappe Ross for her dedication to Ellen Lodge as our fear7

Updates from Haabets Fremtid Lodge #78, Troy, New York As I am writing this morning I am watching the snow fall outside my kitchen window. I am not sure what happened to fall and the holidays, but I can certainly say they were busy times. After enjoying the mountains and lakes during the summer months, we were on our way to the National Convention in Minneapolis, MN. Our delegate was Marilyn Dore and alternate, Marjorie Wheeler. Judy and Harry Jensen also joined us for a great convention and time of hygge. The convention was wonderful. We learned so many new things, and enjoyed making many new friends. We were also excited to have Marilyn Dore installed as an Alternate to the Board. While the ladies were attending meetings, Harry met up with an old Vietnam Army friend, Allen Stanton Allen not only entertained Harry with fishing and making memories, but also treated us ladies to lunch and walking the Mall of America. The convention included a visit to the Danish America Center with a stop to see Minnehaha Falls and the River. Before we left the area ,Marilyn rented a car and we took our own tour of the American Swedish Institute. We saw the historic Turnblad Mansion as well as enjoyed a lunch of open face Swedish sandwiches. In the fall we also had a visit with our Sister, Mildred Shea at her new nursing home and then went to a short officers meeting to plan for the convention. Mildred is doing wonderful and remembering a lot of fun times as we gathered together

that day. In October we were invited by some of the ladies from the Schenectady Lodge to meet for lunch at the Ripe Tomato in Malta. We were able to take Gerda Nevell with us who is in the area for the summer. It was wonderful to gather for our Christmas luncheon at the Van Schaick Golf course in Cohoes. We were able to have some members with us who are now physically feeling better. Art Hansen was one with Gerda Neville who is still waiting eye surgery before returning to Florida. Gladys Christensen was able to join us as well as Dianna Kennedy who has recently moved to the area. We had a good attendance with several members of both the Troy and Schenectady lodges as well as guests. Sandwiches of our choosing were enjoyed and then followed up with rice pudding dessert and homemade danish cookies. Art Hansen was the lucky person to find the almond in his pudding and how he enjoyed making all of us guess that he was the one to find it. We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and in the northeast we will take a little time to enjoy the winter months. Snow is really pretty on the trees and hillsides and creates a time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the season. Sincerely, Marjorie Wheeler, Treasurer and Correspondent

Greetings from Lodge #90, Lincoln, NE On Dec. 2, 2023 Lodge 90 from Lincoln NE met for their annual Christmas Party. We had lunch with open face sandwiches, salads & desserts. Vicki brought special cupcakes for all of us. Next, Vicki read us a story from a Hans Christen Andersen book. We had fun exchanging gifts. Lots of laughter along with talking! We all wish you a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year! Submitted by Fran Freeman Correspondent

Danish Sisterhood Tour 2024 Visit Beautiful East Jutland with your Sisterhood friends. September 10-21, 2024 The Itinerary: Aarhus – The City of Smiles. (3 nights) This year the tour will begin in Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark, also known as “The City of Smiles.” We’ll spend the first three nights at Scandic Aarhus City, a four-star hotel right in the center of town, close to the shopping street, the cathedral, The Old Town, AROS Museum, the harbor, and Salling Roof Top. The Old Town (Den Gamle By) is an open air town museum. It’s newest exhibition includes “welfare and open-mindedness from 1950-1974, a time characterized by feminism, free thinking and experiments with new ways of living. AROS Museum is one of the largest art museum in northern Europe and is the most frequented art museum in Scandinavia. It has been awarded two Michelin stars in its tourism guide. In addition, we’ll meet pop/rock icon Poul Krebs, who has twenty-five albums in his bag, at Aarhus Sports Academy in Risskov, where we’ll get a short tour and a meal. Also on the Aarhus program is the magnificent Moesgaard Museum that stands out as one of Denmark’s finest museums dedicated to archaeology and ethnography. Well known is the Grauballe Man, whose body dates back to the third century BC. Inviting shopping opportunities are just around the corner of the hotel. On our way from Aarhus to Silkeborg we’ll swing by the HQ of one of the biggest retail successes in modern Danish history, namely “JYSK”, formerly known as Jysk Sengetøjslager and meet the current CEO, Jan Bøgh. Silkeborg - located in the Highlands of Lakes (2 nights) The first stop before arriving in Silkeborg will be the, for Danes, famous Himmelbjerget (Sky Mountain), a hilltop of 482 ft, one of the highest natural points in Denmark. It has beautiful nature, panoramic views and an old watch tower. By the way, according to Nordic mythology the god Heimdal lives on top of Himmelbjerget. Lunch on your own here. The bus will take us down to the lake and Hjejlen, the oldest operative steamer in the world. It will sail us through beautiful nature to Silkeborg. There will be time to visit the Asger Jorn Mu-

seum, which is the home of the most comprehensive collection of his works, but also thousands of other paintings, and sculptures of other artists. Jorn’s “Stalingrad” will make an impact on most people. A visit to Grauballe Brewery is a nice little touch to acknowledge the vast number of local craft breweries that pop up all over Denmark. The brew master will take us on a tour of the small company and we’ll taste up to eight samples. We’ll stay at Scandic Hotel Silkeborg for two nights. It is located near pastoral nature and Long Lake. The breakfast is outstanding and we’ll have two delicious dinners there as well. The lobby has a nice bar, a pool is close by and feel free to work-out. Shopping options. Randers Rain Forest On our way from Silkeborg to Hotel Amerika outside Hobro, we’ll swing by Randers Rain Forest. It is a tropical zoo located in three big domes for kids of all ages, and we’ll meet lemurs, snakes and other wildlife from three continents in this unique living ecosystem undergoing constant change. On a rainy and gray day we’ll pay Memphis Mansion a visit. A place for Elvis and Johnny Cash fans. If it doesn’t rain the bus will take us to the outdoor Fyrkat Viking Fortress, dating back to 980 AD. The fortress was built by King Harald Bluetooth. Hvidsten Kro (Inn) is from 1634, a Privileged Royal Inn that has now been in the same family for almost 150 years. It has a long history and in modern times it is mainly know for the Hvidsten Group that during the Nazi occupation of Denmark consisted of bold and brave freedom fighters, who made life very difficult for the invaders. Historian Poul S. Andersen will guide us through the museum and put some of the gruesome history of the famous inn into perspective. Lunch will be served. Hotel Amerika (2 nights) We’ll enjoy a mini vacation at Hotel Amerika near Hobro located in beautiful and scenic surroundings and inhale the fresh air that nature provides. Two delicious dinners will satisfy anyone. Walkable distance to the fjord and wood, if you want a little extra exercise. 9

Danish Sisterhood News, February 2024

Sostrup Slot – castle and convent (2 nights) This castle has a colorful history with many contrasts. It has been owned by counts and dukes, by cool ladies and quiet nuns. At Sostrup, you will feel it all, from extravaganza to quietness. The innkeeper has promised to give us a tour of the old castle and tell stories about the ghosts that you may meet if you decide to walk around on your own after midnight. Two wonderful dinners are already waiting for us. Today, the castle is owned by a Danish American woman, living in California. We’ll make a day trip to Mols National Park, Kalø Slotsruin (a 700-year old ruined castle), and Slettehage Lighthouse from 1872 and appreciate the beauty that nature can bring. If time allows to, we’ll visit Kalø Language Folk School as well. Ebeltoft (2 nights) Last, but not least. The final stop on the tour is the absolutely quaint and lovely town of Ebeltoft, where several streets have cobbled stone and very old houses. A visit to the old city hall from 1789 is a must, and so is a visit to the old warship Fregatten Jylland. Ebeltoft Glass Museum is outstanding and here we will meet world class glass artist Janusz Walentynowicz, formerly Clinton, IL, now Skagen. An interesting visit to the European Film College is in the works and shopping in this fabulous town is a must, including a visit to the old malt factory. Tremendous dinners are planned at Strandkroen (Beach Tavern) on Egsmark Strand and at Karen’s Kitchen on the harbor. Accommodation and nice breakfasts at Ebeltoft Park Hotel. Notes: All breakfasts are included in the price and so are all evening meals. Some of the evening meals will include your choice of one glass of wine, soda or beer. Lunches on your own, but the Hvidsten lunch is included. All admission fees are included. How do I get to Scandic Aarhus City? 1) If you fly into Billund, take the bus to Aarhus and then a cab/uber to the hotel. 2) If you fly into Aarhus, take the bus to Aarhus and a cab/uber to the hotel. 3) If you fly into Copenhagen, I recommend you take the train (go first class) to Aarhus. Enjoy the beautiful ride across Sjœlland (Zealand), the tunnel and the magnificent bridge. Take a cab/uber to the hotel.

DSS Angel Member Status

Address Changes If you have moved please use this form to notify the Danish Sisterhood of America.

The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels” posted.
