As we enter the month of December, I hope each of you will find some hygge and are able to connect with family and friends. I think we all need that after the year we have had. Last month, I talked about the traditions you and your family brought with you, and it reminded me of the ones I brought with me and some I adapted. We celebrate Christmas both on the 24th and 25th as julemanden in the USA does come overnight. We dance around the tree and switch between singing English and Danish carols. We put our tree up a couple weeks before Christmas instead of on December 23rd which causes some logistical issues between presents stacked up under the tree, the electrical cord being too short, and we gave up on open flame candles. So, one year, instead of pulling the tree out of the corner, we pulled out the cat tree and danced around it. The important thing is: we are singing, bonding and having a great time. We have adapted a few things and will keep doing so and that makes going to Denmark for Christmas such an adventure for all of us: I go down memory lane and my husband and children get the undiluted Danish experience. This year has been especially emotionally draining and required a lot of self-reflection, patience, and understanding. Now more than ever we all need to be reminded that kindness and empathy matters, and that family and traditions are an important part of who we are. The Danish Sisterhood is in many ways like a large family, we have different experiences, beliefs and outlooks on life, but what we all have the common goal of holding on to our Danish roots which is what brings us all together. I wish all of you en rigtig glædelig jul.

Dear Sisters, Glædelig Jul og Godt Nytår! I don't know about you, but I am ready for the holiday season! As this is our last issue of 2020, I'd like to take a moment to acknowledge all that has happened this year. It's been a difficult year, to say the least. We've faced so many unknowns—a pandemic, uprisings, elections, wildfires (and other natural disasters), and more. At times, I know that I've felt defeated and worried. But I've also learned and discovered a lot this year. I've learned new hobbies and skills, I've made the time to take a step back and look at things in a new way, I've discovered that we are adaptable and strong, and I've found that, at the heart of everything, there are always people there caring about one another. I'm looking forward to the holidays and to 2021, while also knowing that a new year doesn't necessarily mean we won't face trials. But it feels like a great time for new perspectives and hopes! As for the Danish Sisterhood and the DSN, I'm looking forward to continuing to connect with each of you. I'm looking forward to working on what the future of our organization looks like and how we can get there together. I hope you are also looking forward to these things. I hope that all of you have a wonderful holiday season surrounded by joy and love and care. Stay safe and I look forward to seeing you and connecting with you in 2021. Until next time... Lauren C. Nielsen, Editor editor@danishsisterhood.com P.S. In light of our printer taking some much-needed vacation time over the holidays, our January 2021 issue may be a little delayed. But don't you fear—our February issue will be back on schedule!

This photo shows just a couple aspects that I love to include—a Bing & Grondahl Christmas ornament and a garland of Danish flags. I also always adorn my tree with candles. What Danish traditions do you partake in during the holidays?

Haabets Fremtid Lodge #78, Troy, New York After a long time of dealing with COVID, a few of our Sisters decided to gather as a small group, and at the end of September, we held our first meeting since March. We needed to remain few in numbers and our usual restaurant has not opened yet, so we met at the home of Judy Jensen, our secretary. Her home remains the easiest for everybody to get to. We enjoyed a light lunch of sandwiches and homemade apple crisp. The time seemed to fly by and while enjoying our time together, it seemed in no time at all we were on our way home. We even had a couple of the men join us for a time out as well. One of our Sisters, Mildred Shea was having surgery so she missed this time with us. We decided that a few of us would pay her a visit when she was on the road to recovery, and share with her the old-fashioned way of the Sisterhood with an actual visit. We then talked about our Christmas dinner. Judy would like to share her home with us again this year and we will all help with the food. We made some preliminary plans and set the date on our normal meeting day of December 12th. So today, October 29th we were able to visit

with Mildred. Six of us gathered around her kitchen table, enjoyed ziti and meatballs, salad, apple crisp, Lt's Kisses and lemon cookies with pumpkin cake to take home. You can tell we all enjoy our desserts. Mildred is doing wonderful following her surgery and truly enjoyed having a little company. Of course, the rest of us enjoyed a little hygge as well. We made final plans for our Christmas dinner. We don't know when we will be able to officially have meetings again, but we are hoping after the first of the year. Meanwhile we are thinking of perhaps meeting in members' homes and having a simple lunch. It is hard to believe that Christmas and winter are almost here. We would like to wish everyone a GlĂŚdelig Jul and Happy New Year. May God bless each of you and may you enjoy time with your family and friends. Hope to see you in 2021. Sincerely, Marjorie Wheeler, Treasurer and Correspondent

Greetings from Lodge #3, Davenport, IA Lodge #3 Davenport, Iowa wishes everyone a happy, healthy 2021. For the past few months we have had Zoom meetings at our usual time, 2nd Thursday of the month at 11:30am. We want to thank Jerry and Judy Johansen for making those meetings happen via Zoom. Of course we miss being able to meet in person, but it is great being able to keep in touch with some, if not all of our members this way. This year has provided us so many opportunities to try different ways of communicating and we can only hope to Danish Sisterhood News, December 2020

soon be able to meet again in person as we did in this photo from 2018. Happy new year from Lodge #3. 4

HOMETOWN HARVEST COVID VERSION 2020 It was a wonderful Hometown Harvest on Oct. 3, with Hygge #188 Sisters welcoming at least 120 area friends for four hours to enjoy the farm atmosphere. Available for picking were pumpkins, gourds, beets, onions, sunflowers, lavender, and other fresh vegetables and flowers, planted and tended by our friend, Cathy, on her family farm. In addition, children of all ages could see the chickens who even laid an egg for the event. Making corn brooms was an interesting new learning, with the raw materials on site just a few garden rows away. Visitors willingly complied with the required COVID pandemic protocols by wearing masks and social distancing, with directional walkways through the gardens. Because of the pandemic, Make A Dolly kits were available to take home this year, rather than being demonstrated and lovingly taught by our Sister, Anne, for whom this had been a favorite

project. Supplies of cloth squares, ribbons and lavender were available to make sachets. All the take home kits of pine cones, peanut butter and bird seeds to make birdfeeders were distributed. Hometown Harvest is a donations only event for the community, and this year, despite the shortened hours, no making of apple cider nor serving of soup, breads, cookies and coffee, generous friends and neighbors donated more than $1000 for causes which in the past have been humanitarian and cultural, both near and far. We will meet soon to discuss where to donate these monetary gifts. We are grateful for the success of this event and for those who supported it so enthusiastically. Nu Har Vi Jul Igen by Annette Lind Christmas holds so many memories of my childhood. With both parents of Danish descent, it was perhaps a bit different from the way the holidays were spent at my friend’s houses. Santa came, but there were also nisse involved (not elves—NISSE). The tree was gaily decorated, but among the decorations were heart baskets. Christmas baking included kliner as well as cookies. It was only recently that Debbie Henke, one of our Lodge members, brought back another Christmas memory—cardboard pages with nisse printed on them complete with tabs. I would cut them out and place them around the house as decorations. Debbie had found some of these cardboard nisse at Nordisk Imports in Atlanta. (They are also available from the Danish Windmill in Elk Horn, Iowa—and probably at other Scandinavian shops.) Seeing the sheet of nisse brought back memories of packing up sugar, coffee, chocolate and (oh my goodness it was other times cigarettes to send to family in Denmark still recovering from the German occupation. A package usually came our way as well, especially from my Tante Anna. It was usually a gift for me, the youngest child in our extended family. Sometimes it was a book. Once the book was Evenlynet on to smaa prenesser og deres Fædreland about the two little Danish princesses during the war. Once it was a book of the Han Christian Andersen fairytale, Den Grimme Ælling (The Ugly Duckling) and once a book called Bamse (not the Swedish cartoon), but about a little Danish bear. But more often it was a sheet of julenisse (The three books mentioned have been donated to our library.). I still have one of those julenisse sheets that for some reason was never cut out. Here is a picture of that sheet. I found it about 35 years ago in a box with a pine cone wreath my mother had made. A few years ago on a trip to Denmark we visited Den Gamle By in Aarhus. In the Christmas shop and museum I saw many of these little nisse on display along with sheets of every Danish Christmas seal* ever issued and original copies of Peter’s Jul.* Of course, now that these nisse had appeared again in my life, I had to know more about these happy and very busy little guys. The ones currently for sale are called Bramming Nisse. I wondered about that name, “Bramming.” My memory of Bramming was a place I recalled from a visit with my Aunt and Uncle in Esbjerg and our trips to Ribe. But what did that have to do with nisse? Well, as it turned out, Bramming is also the name of a famous Danish cartoonist. Frederik Bramming was born on October 23, Danish Sisterhood News, December 2020

1911 in Frederikshaven but moved to Copenhagen with his family in 1922. In 1947 he joined the staff of Politikens’s publishing house

where he worked until the early 50’s. He is best known for the kravlenisse (crawling nisse). Kravlenisser are drawn figures with a tab which allows them to be cut out and used as Christmas decorations. Bramming originated this idea and published the first two sheets in 1947. They were a big success. The following year the idea was copied by other publishers and artists. An attempt was made to copyright the kravlenisser, but the request was rejected in 1949. Since then, many artists have created “crawling nisses.” Those drawn by Frederik Bramming, Aage Dam, Illa Winkelhorn and Iben Clante were particularly popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Originally the sheets were published and could be purchased throughout Denmark. They were so popular they began to be distributed free as a promotional sheet. Since the 1980’s the Kravlenisser sheets have been distributed as inserts to weekly magazines, and they can now be found as free downloads on the internet. I was able to find them on a site called “festABC”. Go to www.festABC.dk and select the Sange option. Enter in the Søgeord box the work KRAVLENISSER and press the Søg button. Select the Kravlenisser options for information and nisse to print. Bramming died on April 19, 1991. The following is information that further explains some things referred to in the above article and followed by an asterisk: Danish Christmas Seals In the beginning of the 20th century tuberculosis had become a major health problem. The effect on children was especially bad. In 1904 a Danish postal clerk named Einar Holbøll had an idea to add an extra stamp on Christmas cards sent through the mail. The money raised by the sales of this extra 6

stamp could be used to help children suffering with TB. And so the first Christmas seal was born. Queen Louise, queen to Christian IX, appeared on the first stamp which sold for .02 DKK. Four million were sold. They were introduced to the United States by Emily Bissell in 1907, after she had read about the 1904 Danish Christmas seal in an article by Danish-born Jacob Riis, a journalist and photographer. Peter’s Jul For those who are unfamiliar with this Danish Christmas book, it is the story of a Danish boy, Peter, and his Christmas told in a series of poems set in the 1800’s. I would say it is as familiar to the Danes as The Night Before Christmas is to Americans. It was first published in December 1866. Johan Krohn wrote this lovely little book with handcolored drawings by Otto Haslund and the author's brother Pietro Krohn. The 1870 publication had only drawings by Pietro Krohn. Over the years other illustrators have had their drawings printed in the book as new editions were released.

For many, Peter's Christmas is the epitome of a “hygge” Danish Christmas. The story follows the boy Peter from Christmas Advent through Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve until the arrival of the three kings and ends when the old Christmas tree is driven away. In the story there are shopkeepers, an old-fashioned Christmas tree, secret Christmas puzzles, candlelight, snow and a real Julemanden, who makes sure all good children are remembered at Christmas. They are a loving family complete with a grandmother who visits and tells the children exciting stories. The book was filmed by Jeppe Søe in 2006 and released on DVD with Grethe Sønck and Peter Belli as narrators. The film is recorded in Ribe, Denmark's oldest city, at the museum Quedens Gaard, which is authentic for the period. One of Johan Krohn's grandchildren takes part in the film's bonus track with contemporary stories about the Krohn family and their Christmas. Since some of the author’s family lived near Ribe, the city celebrates the story at Christmas time. Each weekend through December you can take a walk with Peter's father in the old streets of Ribe. Listen to the history from the 1850s with music playing all around the city. The tour is free. Lodge #15 wishes all of you a very Glædelig Jul. We hope you will all spend the holidays warm and cozy with a loving family, just like Peter. 7

Danish Sisterhood News, December 2020

The Museum of Danish America DSS Archives Update Seasons greetings to you all! I am writing to update you on the status of the Danish Sisterhood of America Archives Project, but first I want to highlight why this collection is particularly important. As I go through the collection I am reminded of how exceptional the collection is. It documents not only a Danish-American organization from its origin, but it also documents the female experience for over a century. This collection contains, perhaps most importantly, ledgers that represent many lodges, containing detailed minutes from meetings, photos, financial documents, member applications, death certificates for members whose family received their benefits—in other words, a wealth of information. As I mentioned in my previous article in June, the DSS ledgers have been cataloged and there is a sample of each one available through View Our Collections online. At the time of this writing, I have cataloged approximately half of the remaining boxes of documents, of which there are 50. Due to some sensitive financial information, there are no scans attached to some of the records, but there is a description of what is contained in each file. These digital records should make things easy for researchers to search and find the information they are looking for. I have been able to move this quickly through the material with the help of a dedicated volunteer, my mother, Anna Redsand. She has been working with me for about a month and is focused on tasks that would slow my progress. She and I joined the sisterhood in 2002 when I was in high school and applying to Dana College. A recent exciting find came when we discovered our very own applications for membership. We typically upload new records to View Our Collection twice a year. The last upload of the ledgers

took place in June of this year and the next upload will take place by the end of December. I’m very happy to announce that we have received 68 separate donations in support of the DSS Archives project from both individuals and lodges. We now sit at a total of $24,232 donated to match the grant funds that we received which total $43,000. This leaves a balance of $18,768 to fully match the grant. That is amazing! We’re a little over halfway to the end of the grant period and you have donated a little over half of the total matching grant funds. This made me realize that with only about $19K remaining, if all of the current active Sisterhood members donated $20 we would easily make our goal. As a bonus, if you were to increase your donation to $30, you would not only be supporting the project, but you would receive a complimentary new membership to the museum for one year. Please indicate “Sisterhood Project” on the memo line if you send a check or in the “Notes” box for an online donation. As an additional challenge to you all, which I hope will be fun, I’m asking for each active lodge to write up a lodge history. Perhaps you already have one (I have come across a few), and it just needs to be updated, or perhaps this will be your first. If you are a member of Lodge #300 and used to be a member of an inactive lodge, I encourage you to also send a history. You can mail them to the museum at my attention or to my email address: cjansdatter@danishmuseum.org. Glædelig Jul og Godt Nytår!

DSS Angel Member Status The Danish Sisterhood has a new and very special member status, the DSS Angels. This status belongs to those members that wish to gift their funeral benefit back to the Sisterhood. We have had some members in the past make the Sisterhood their beneficiary. We believe this is a generous and significant gift, and wish to honor them while we can, keeping a list of our current “Angels” posted. A couple of options are available: • A change of beneficiary to: Danish Sisterhood of America or, • A change of beneficiary to one of the national scholarship funds. Be specific, ie: Betty Hansen Scholarship, Past National Officers, Camp Grant, etc. If you wish to change your status, please contact your lodge or the National Secretary for a Beneficiary Change Form. Your benefit does not need to be fully paid yet, and you would be expected to maintain your payments, as the Sisterhood will not receive the benefit until your passing. Those that do not have a funeral benefit as part of your membership category are welcome to participate by donating $1,000 to the Danish Sisterhood of America. On behalf of our entire membership, we wish to thank and honor as our first Angels: Lodge #
