Dr. Samantha Boldt DC

Q

Tell us about you and your practice. What made you decide to go into the health industry?

A

Live Your Life Chiropractic opened in January of 2018 with just myself as a chiropractor and functional medicine practitioner. Pretty soon we added another chiropractor, massage therapists, and an acupuncturist to the practice as well! I absolutely love the team I get to work with. It is very helpful to have other practitioners from different backgrounds to review patient cases with. Some of us are more focused on joints, and some are more focused on soft tissue like muscle and fascia. Together, we can typically determine what course of treatment is going to get a patient feeling better faster. I was lucky enough to know at the age of 16 that I wanted to be a chiropractor. The age of 16 was also the second time I had been to see a chiropractor. The first time was six years earlier when I dove into two feet of water onto my head, which caused lots of neck pain and stiffness for the year to come. Pretty soon after the accident, I was taken to a chiropractor, and rather than letting them adjust me, I screamed (a lot) and refused to be touched.

L

ooking back, I wish I had understood then the importance of having a properly aligned spine…..and how much less painful life is when everything is where it’s

supposed to be! Even though I did eventually get to a chiropractor by the age of 16, a lot of the damage had already been done. I was having trouble breathing and a lot of tightness on the right side of my upper back and neck.

W

ithin 4 visits, the new chiropractor I was seeing was able to get me adjusted and feeling 90% better. I was able to breathe again, play the sports I wanted to play, and concentrate more in school. While that area is still a weak spot for me, I get adjusted once every 2-4 weeks to keep everything in place. I go in before things get out of place so that I (almost) never have the symptoms I started with in the first place.

I

love helping other people feel the same relief that I did. Freedom from pain is a gift that is hard to match. While we may not get everybody feeling 100%, there are very few people we can’t help improve in some way. Increasing range of motion, decreasing pain levels, and decreasing the amount of numbness and tingling are just a few of the common results we have.

M

y own story is one of the reasons I encourage parents to bring their children in as well. How often do we look back on high school sports injuries or some stupid fall we had as a child and wonder if that was the start of our chronic neck pain, low back pain, knee pain, etc? The sooner we can fix a problem, the less likely that problem will affect us for the rest of our life. Luckily, most kids are not like me as a child, and love coming in to get adjusted. It’s amazing how many times smaller children will come in for their first adjustment, or to watch their parents get adjusted, and then go home to play chiropractor!”

Q

What is your philosophy about Health & Wellness?

A

When it comes to health and wellness philosophies, I have a few. My experience as a patient, for better or worse, has definitely made me a better and more empathetic doctor, and left me with a few life lessons. My first big philosophy is never give up. Typically this means that you are your own best health advocate. Just because one doctor doesn’t have answers doesn’t mean another won’t. When I contracted Lyme disease, it took almost 3 years and over twenty practitioners later before I was diagnosed properly and treated. It was an incredibly tough journey, and extremely hard to keep looking for answers, but I don’t know where I would be today without that final doctor.

Q

Q

Why did you select Erie as the place to start your business years ago?

A

When I first moved out to Colorado, I stayed with my Aunt and Uncle in Thornton. This gave me time to look around the area and figure out where I wanted to practice. I immediately fell in love with Erie, and the small close-knit town that still had a grocery store, library, and a rec center. I also grew up in a town in Illinois that had hot air balloons landing in my backyard, and so felt right at home here! Within a year of opening the practice, we bought a place in the Grandview neighborhood, and absolutely love it!

Q

Tell us one thing that no one knows about you:

A

Very few people know that I was on my high school golf team and even made it to state twice. Between golfing and dancing, two sports that tend to misalign the spine, I’m so glad I found chiropractic!

What do you consider your specialty?

A

Our office truly specializes in general family wellness. We love working with patients of all ages.

Dr. Brad Brown DO Dr. Sara Schuster MD

Q

Tell us about you and your practice. What made you decide to go into the health industry? (answered by Dr. Brown)

A

My wife and I moved to Erie a few years ago and have fallen in love with the town. Dr. Schuster and her husband are Colorado natives and are not far away at all. Our practice, Strive Direct Health, is a direct primary care practice. DPC is a new spin on how primary care use to be - just you and your doctor. We cut out the inconvenient hassle of insurance middlemen which preserves the doctor-patient relationship and allows us as physicians to focus on your needs. There is no one behind a desk in a far off land dictating how I as a physician can practice medicine and what you, as the patient, need for your health. We utilize all forms of communication (text, phone, FaceTime, email, etc) to give the care when it is needed, not “next Tuesday, the available appointment”. Every day, patients are shocked when it is myself or Dr. Schuster personally answering the phone or that they have our number they can text directly, whether it’s a picture of their child’s rash or a quick question about the latest worldwide pandemic. It is incredibly refreshing to have the time to sit with (or text, or FaceTime) patients when they need it, and build a lasting relationship focused on their health goals. I don’t believe our healthcare system is broken. The system just has an efficiency problem and places the

incentives in the wrong place. How often have you gone to a doctor’s office after waiting weeks/months for an appointment, only to wait for an hour and then only talk to the doctor for 3 minutes? How is that ok? At Strive Direct Health, we are building a practice model that removes the unnecessary nonsense and lets us care for our patients without anything or anyone in between. We empower our patients to take back control of their health by removing those obstacles, and they can’t get enough of it. It is truly inspiring.

Q

A

What is your philosophy about Health & Wellness?

Health and wellness is a fickle friend, a forever moving target. Each person has their own goals, hopes, desires, dreams when it comes to their health. It is most definitely NOT one size fits all. Dr. Schuster and I are simply a guides for our patients to truly peel back the layers and find what theirs are. To do this, we don’t just focus on the physical ailments of our patients, but of the entire mind - body - spirit (aka bi-

opsychosocial) model of health. Having the time and the relationship with patients is the only way this is truly possible. Being able to text your doctor when you have a thought about what we discussed at our previous visit or sending a quick follow-up email after taking some time to think is invaluable. And it’s a two way door. I often have a thought days later and restart the conversation with a patient over a quick phone call. It is humbling and fulfilling for all parties involved. And that is part of wellness, isn’t it? Health and wellness does not start and stop in a doctors office. It is every day we live. It evolves and adapts to our living circumstances. Sometimes, we just can’t eat healthy because we’re traveling too much or money is short. Sometimes we are in a tough spot mentally because of stress on the job. Other times, it’s smooth sailing and life is grand. As physicians, being flexible and able to accommodate this (through our direct care model) is paramount to our patients self-sustainable health.

Q

What do you consider your specialty?

Q

Why did you select Erie as the place to start your business years ago?

A

When my wife and I moved to Erie a few years ago with our 3 young kids, we knew we’d be staying for a long, long time. The people here are incredible and that’s what it comes down too. The town has welcomed us and Strive with open arms. There truly is no better place to raise a family (or start a practice!). found, not only lifelong friends, but our chosen family. Erie, in my opinion, is the best place to live and grow.

Q

Tell us one thing that no one knows about you:

A

For me: I am fluent in Portuguese (having lived in Portugal for a few years). Dr. Schuster: she is the best mogul skier I have ever seen.

A

As Family Medicine doctors, we are often called “general practitioners”. By definition (set by insurance companies), we are not “specialists” and don’t claim to be. Dr. Schuster and I like to consider ourselves more along the lines of “comprehensivists”. We are trained to look at the entire story of a patient, not just zoom in on their presenting issue. In addition to Strive, we both cover inpatient services, rural emergency rooms, and even deliver babies. We feel this provides an incredible value to our patients as when we say “you should go to the ER”, it is for something they really should go for. Otherwise, we can take care of it in our clinic.

Janette Elder LE, LMT

Q

Tell us about you and your practice. What made you decide to go into the health industry?

A

I have both a Massage Therapy practice and a Skin Care practice. Within each specialty, I use a variety of modalities in order to focus on both corrective and preventative therapies. I was born in and grew up in Wyoming where hard work, sacrifice, and family were the primary focus. As a child, all around me, my family members suffered various ailments, injuries and afflictions and many of my family members died early suffering from poor health and led poor lifestyles. In my late teens I moved to Southern California and then went on to go to college in Idaho. In both locations I observed a different mindset. One where a healthy balanced lifestyle meant that you were better able to serve those around you and also led to better mental health. I began exploring those ideas and as I dealt with my own health issues, I found that diet, exercise, massage, acupuncture, being outdoors in nature, etc. made me a better individual in a variety of ways.

Q

A

What is your philosophy about Health & Wellness?

I believe that there is no “one size fits all” approach to health and wellness and that we all have different needs for a healthy lifestyle. I believe that most activities can be called self-care and all should be adding to the quality of our lives. Important components of self-care include; eating a diet that nourishes our bodies and our soul, moving our bodies (use it or lose it), resting our bodies when needed, engaging in leisure activities that fulfill us mentally and emotionally, being in positive relationships, enjoying our work, engaging in community, and spending time with family and friends.

Q

Why did you select Erie as the place to start your business years ago?

A

I love living in Erie and wanted to build my practice in the town I live in so that I could have a stronger connection with my community. I appreciate how supportive the Erie community is of local small business and even though we are growing rapidly, Erie has managed to maintain a small-town feel.

Q

Tell us a bit about yourselves, where are you from originally and what made you pick Erie as a place to live?

A

My name is Robbie Mauch, I’m originally from Corpus Christi, Texas. My business partner and I moved to Colorado in 2015 for the second time, after living in California for a bit. We moved around a lot for work, but ultimately we chose Erie as our permanent home for the small town feel but the growing community.

Dr. Amanda Toney DC Dr. Jeric Toney DC

Q

Tell us about you and your practice. What made you decide to go into the health industry?

A

We met in chiropractic school in Overland Park, KS which is in the Kansas City metro area. We moved to Colorado to have a better view and enjoy the outdoor activities that Colorado provides. We went into the healthcare industry to help people move better, feel better and live on their own terms. Both of us have experienced how beneficial an active lifestyle can be and we want to help people reach their goals in health.

Q

A

What is your philosophy about Health & Wellness?

Our philosophy is that we want to get our patients better as quickly as possible. To do that we educate our patients on how to identify their pain, teach them to move more functionally, and ultimately get them to a point where they do not need us. Our mission is to make your life better and get you back to doing the things you love and living life on your own terms.

Q

What do you consider your specialty?

A

Dr. Jeric specializes in functional medicine, utilizing state of the art diagnostic tests to help people find the root cause of their condition to help them reach their health goals. Dr. Amanda focuses on sports and proper biomechanics, utilizing various soft tissue techniques in her treatments as well as rehab exercises to get people feeling and moving their best.

Q

A

Why did you select Erie as the place to start your business years ago?

We chose Erie because it is a community. It reminds us of towns we both grew up in and we have felt supported and loved since we stepped foot here. Because of that we knew Erie was where we wanted to not only build business but also live and grow our family. Also, the views are pretty amazing with the hot air balloons and mountains.

Dr. Zach Wurth DC

Q

Tell us about you and your practice. What made you decide to go into the health industry?

A

Dr. Zach is originally from Le Mars, Iowa while Dr. Brynn is from Youngstown, Ohio. Brynn has always be interested in the health field whether it was when she was younger and wanted to be a veterinarian or while she was in high school wanting to be a Physical Therapist, the draw to healthcare was always there. The want to be a chiropractor came about in her last year of undergrad at West Virginia University while doing an interview project. She loved who she interviewed so much that she ended up at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa where she met Zach and the rest is history so to say. Zach has been surrounded by healthcare his whole life since his mom, Rachel, has always been a nurse and eventual Nurse Practitioner. When he was in high school, he had a ankle injury during a football game and his chiropractor was there to help him out so picking the profession as a career was never out of the realm. When it came time to choose a graduate school, he didn’t go too far from the University of Northern Iowa by choosing Palmer College in Davenport as well.

Q

A

Dr. Brynn Lay DC

What is your philosophy about Health & Wellness?

We are patient-centered, financially- transparent, and evidenced-informed. We combine all of these principles to bring a more humanistic value to healthcare. We believe that there is a healthcare provider for everyone, even if that is not us as Wurth Chiropractic. We would never keep someone at our practice if we were making progress or reaching their functional goals. Integrative care/co-management is very important to us as well. When the patient’s needs are put first by everyone on the health care team, that patient wins. Empowerment is a word we toss around a lot too. Our goal is to always have our patients feel empowered to tell us what they need and to even mitigate their own pain once released from care. We don’t want to be seeing you for months on end without any results. That’s a flag to us that we are not doing our jobs correctly and finding the actual reason for our patient’s complaint. Being up front about our costs helps to alleviate stress off the

patient when they first come in and have to ask what pricing is. It’s on our website right before you would sign up. Lastly, we strive to be evidence-informed physicians meaning well done and solid evidence will guide our care. We take in to account our experience and anecdotal evidence as well. We never unethical market or claim to fix ailments that simply aren’t backed by science. We truly want to have our patient’s backs ;)

Q

A

What do you consider your specialty?

Dr. Zach has his Titleist Performance Certification which allows him to take golfers through a golf-specific movement assessment and analyze their swing. Zach consider himself a biomechanical swing specialist rather than a golf coach. He doesn’t believe there is one perfect swing we all must follow. Zach believes there are an infinite number of ways to swing a club. It’s important to be evaluated to what our bodies are actually capable of doing throughout the golf swing. His golf patients have commented that through our program they are able to move better than they ever have on the golf course. Dr. Brynn loves working with prenatal and postpartum moms along with babies. She recently became certified in BirthFIT which is strength and conditioning for the motherhood transition. This certification aligns with a lot of our practice values meaning BirthiFIT is all about empowerment and being patient- centered. We want to give women during this time of their lives the strength and confidence to be able to move functionally without issues from labor. We have specific protocols and workshops to aid moms during motherhood no matter what it looks like. Dr. Brynn is a “go with the flow” and support mom in whatever her birth goals are kind of physician.

Q

Why did you select Erie as the place to start your business years ago?

A

Business-wise, simply put, this place is growing. It was 2 years ago when we first visited and it will absolutely continue to grow. It has been a great opportunity getting in to the community when we have because it really feels like were on the cusp of Old Town and Erie as a whole is going to truly expand. Now if you ask us personally “why Erie?” We would say instantly because it has reminded us of home. Which many of our friends here have echoed the same sentiment. Erie still has a small town charm. We all moved here for the same reason which I think is what keeps the towns integrity and uniqueness alive. We all want to see if prosper, just like any other small town would.

Q

Tell us one thing that no one knows about you:

A

Dr. Brynn read 53 books in 2020 and is working on demolishing that record for 2021. Dr. Zach is an above 900-rated disc golfer which essentially means he’s incredibly average ;).

5 Easy Upgrades You Can Make To Increase the Value of Your Home Bernadette Melton

e

One of the most commonly asked questions I hear is “How can I improve the value of my home?” Since our homes are one of the biggest investments we have, it’s important to know how to increase their value without breaking the bank. While sometimes a full kitchen or bathroom remodel may be in order to make a space more functional, it’s not always necessary to strip everything down to the studs to get a great result. Some smaller changes might be all it takes to update your home and give it greater value.

5 Easy Upgrades You Can Make To Increase the Value of Your Home Bernadette Melton

1 Two words: “brass” and “golden oak”. Those are the two things that can really date a house right now. So one of the first things you can do to make a big update is to replace any brass fixtures, including lights and faucets, you may have with different ones. Black and gold are on trend right now, but brushed nickel will still make a big improvement. Also pay attention to the smaller details like switch plate covers and outlets, anywhere you see brass it’s a good idea to change it out!

2 The second big improvement is in flooring. Wider planks are more on trend than the 2” golden

oak many of us have. While it is possible to refinish your floors in a different stain if they’re still in good condition, replacing them with a newer material such as engineered hardwood or luxury vinyl can make a big statement. There are many options in flooring and some are just as durable, if not more so, than hardwood.

3 Let’s talk paint. If you’re planning on staying in your home for a while then choose

colors that you love, but if you’re considering selling your home then neutral colors are a wise choice. Grays and off-whites have become more popular in the past few years as we’ve moved towards a cooler color palette, and many homes are painted the same color throughout the home rather than different colors in each room. It can be more restful for the eyes to keep background paint similar and use accents of color in decor than to have brightly colored rooms that change with each doorway.

4 If you have tile or laminate counters it may be time for a change to a solid surface like

quartz or granite. Many people really do not care for tile counters, that grout is hard to get clean! Changing out cheap laminate counters can make a big statement and really bring up the value of a kitchen or bathroom. Replacing regular sinks with undermount ones can also add extra flair.

5 Last up, those dated appliances. If you still have white appliances it is probably time for

a change! Not only do they really date a kitchen they also likely have their quirks and may not be as energy efficient as newer models. If you have to push a button a certain way or do a special maneuver to turn on your appliance, it’s time! Stainless is the rule of the day. If you want a super fancy refrigerator that does your shopping for you then go for it, but it’s not necessary to go all out to increase the appeal of your kitchen.

How much you spend is determined by your tastes and your budget, and even small changes can reap benefits. Trends do change over time and it’s not necessary to keep up with all of them, but a few changes here and there can add value to one of your biggest assets. Investing time and attention to your home now can lead to greater gains in the future, and you may just find that you enjoy your home even more with a few small tweaks.

Bernadette Melton has been working in real estate for many years. She loves helping find the right home for homebuyers, that “this is it!” look is priceless! And she loves helping sellers close the door on one chapter of their lives as they (literally) open the door on the next one. Real estate is challenging, always different, and provides a unique opportunity to share in the lives of the people she works with.

Blakes's Taphouse

Ingredients • 2 cups of frozen sliced peaches • 1 fresh lemon • fresh thyme • ricotta cheese, 1 cup • 1 oz of bresaola (Italian air-dried salted beef) Whole Foods • sliced red onion • baby arugula • red wine reduction or a balsamic glaze First step is to make the Red Wine Reduction: Reduce down any red wine and adding sugar to taste, cool and set aside for later. Take frozen peaches, thaw and then blend into a puree adding sugar to taste for your base. Next, squeeze a half lemon into a mixing bowl, add 1 cup ricotta cheese and fresh thyme to desired taste. Slice bresaola very thin or have it sliced when purchasing it. Thinly slice red onions and you are now ready to build the flatbread: Layer your crust with the peach puree, add dolops of the lemon thyme ricotta mixture over the crust/puree, then add thin layers of bresaola and thinly sliced red onions. Cook on a pizza stone or sheet pan at 450 degrees for 4-6 minutes. When finished layer baby arugula generously and finish with a drizzle of red wine reduction or balsamic glaze.

helpful hint: For home purposes it would be best to use a pre-baked flatbread crust from King Soopers. One could use what is called “Stonefire artisan flatbread” and can be found in the bread and/or bakery section.

Sunscreen Isn’t Just for Summertime Janette Elder LE, LMT

Sunscreen Isn’t Just for Summertime Janette Elder LE, LMT

As the summer winds down and kids are gearing up for back to school, it’s tempting to put away all things summer related, but don’t pack away that sunscreen! UV intensity increases 4-5% for every 1000 feet of elevation gain. That means here in the Front Range of Colorado, where we are roughly 5,280 feet above sea level, the UV radiation we are exposed to is roughly 25% more intense than it would be at sea level. When you travel to the mountains, it’s even more intense. Sun exposure and sun tanning are damaging your skin, there is no such thing as a “healthy tan”. Our skin tans because UVA and UVB exposure triggers our bodies to distribute existing melanin(skin pigment) or create new melanin granules and distribute free radicals which damage the skin’s DNA. Repeated sun exposure not only causes premature aging, it is also the leading contributor to skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US;

1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70 More than 2 people die of skin cancer in the US every hour Having 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk of melanomaHow can you

protect yourself?

How can you protect yourself?

1. Wear sunscreen and lip balm with no less than SPF 30 daily to all exposed skin and apply it beginning 30-minutes before sun exposure, then reapply every two hours throughout the day. If you are swimming, you’ll need to reapply every 80 minutes 2. Wear broad spectrum sunscreens so you are getting both UVA & UVB protection 3. Wear sunscreens that have a combination of physical (zinc, titanium dioxide) and chemical sunscreen ingredients 4. Wear SPF protective sunglasses, clothing, and hats in addition to sunscreen 5. Keep your skin hydrated, hydrated skin is better able to protect itself from damage 6. Avoid direct sunexposure between the hours of 10 am- 4 pm

Backpacks = Back Pain Jeric Toney DC

Backpacks = Back Pain Jeric Toney DC

As school is quickly approaching it is important to consider the load that our children will be carrying on their backs daily. Technology has become a big contributor to neck pain in children and teens. Back pain has been on the rise as well as kids are now carrying heavier packs to and from school.

Living in Colorado we know the importance of a quality pack when hiking. Apply that knowledge to your child’s backpack.

If it weighs too much talk to the teacher about ways to lighten the load and see if anything can be left at school. Excess weight in a backpack can cause kids to lean forward Things to consider for your child’s backpack: while walking and puts them in a less than optimal load bearing posture.

• Padded straps and a padded back • Straps that are nice and wide to distribute the weight • Having two straps and using both equally • Multiple compartments to help distribute the load • Make sure the backpack size is appropriate for your child; bigger is not always better • The backpack and its contents should weigh no more than 10% of your child’s body weight

This poor position can be worsened if the pack hangs lower than 4 inches below the child’s waist (The same goes if it is too high up on the shoulders). You want the backpack straps tighter to keep the load close to your back for better weight distribution. Taking a few minutes to evaluate our children’s backpacks can save them a lot of discomfort and pain as they work their way through the school year. Remember to break up that time spent on electronics and let’s help our kids have a great year in school!

5 Ways to Celebrate National Women’s Health and Fitness Day Cheryl Maguire

5 Ways to Celebrate National Women’s Health and Fitness Day Mark your calendar for September 29th, to remind yourself (or a woman you know) to celebrate National Women’s Health and Fitness Day. Over 50,000 women of all ages will participate in events across 500 different nationwide communities for the Annual National Women’s Health & Fitness Day. You can check your local senior centers, hospital, health club, or park and recreation department to see if the venue is hosting an event.

3. Eat Healthy: An article in Healthline

As a mother, it is easy to focus on caring for your children instead of your own health and fitness. There are some days you may feel as if you hear your child say “mom I need help” at least 100 times. Even though you might forget to take yourself it is important to make it a priority because when you do you will be a better role model and mother for your children.

It is important to note women have different dietary needs than men. In general women have more fat and less muscle than men which means women require fewer calories. During reproduction years women need more folic acid to decrease the risk of birth defects. Women are more likely to get osteoporosis (80% of people diagnosed with this disease are women), a disease that causes weak bones. One way to increase the strength of your bones is to eat food with calcium.

Try to do at least one or more of these five activities listed below to celebrate National Women’s Health and Fitness Day:

states, some of the rewards you can experience by eating healthy foods are improved mood, avoiding weight gain, preventing diseases and illness, increasing your energy levels and helping you to live longer. It can be difficult to eat healthy foods when you are on the go or focusing on caring for your children, but when you consider all of the above benefits it is worth making the effort.

4. Relax: It is hard for many moms to find a 1. Schedule a Physical Exam: As an moment to relax, but doing so can help relieve

adult you might think that a physical exam is unnecessary if you are healthy. A physical ensures you have your immunizations up to date. Your doctor can also screen for cancer, (skin, breast, ovarian, cervical, etc.) heart conditions, diabetes, cholesterol levels, and other chronic diseases. You can discuss this with your physician mental health issues such as stress or depression and if necessary you can be referred to specialists.

2. Exercise: According to Women’s Day

Magazine, exercise has ten benefits for women other than weight loss. Many of these benefits are related to your health such as reducing your risk for cancer or minimizing stress, depression, and anxiety. If you exercise with a friend it can also be a great way to socialize or meet new people.

stress. Relaxing can be as simple as deep breathing for 5 minutes. Some other ways to unwind are to listen to music, read, meditate, yoga, take a bath, and writing in a journal. Another benefit of relaxing is it can improve your sleep at night and help with insomnia.

5. Sleep: Most moms forgo sleep in an effort

to accomplish all of the different tasks of the day which results in going to bed late or waking up early. A poll in 2005 by the National Sleep Foundation found that women are more likely than men to have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Not receiving enough sleep can result in increased accidents, weight gain, difficulty concentrating, and getting sick.

HEALTH

The Mayo Clinic recommends that adults should receive between 7-8 hours of sleep per night. When you get the proper amount of sleep your body produces proteins called cytokines which fight infections resulting in a stronger immune system. Sleep also helps you to maintain mental and physical energy along with improving your memory.

Create Healthy Habits If you try at least one of these activities, you might find it is easier to do than you thought. If you make an effort to incorporate it into your life you will create healthy habits which will benefit you and your family.

5 Expert Tips to Help Teens with ADHD Cheryl Maguire

5 Expert Tips to Help Teens with ADHD Cheryl Maguire

“I got detention for forgetting my book three times in a row,” read Michael’s text. His mother wasn’t surprised. Michael was diagnosed with ADHD when he was eight years old, and she’s received other messages saying he misplaced or even forgotten to do his homework. His mother hoped that he’d be more organized by 13, and she wonders if this is typical teenage behavior or if it’s due to his ADHD. “Everyone has ADHD behavior at times,” says Dr. Sarah Cheyette, a pediatric neurologist and author of the book, ADHD & The Focused Mind. Cheyette says the difference between a person with ADHD and other people is that the person with ADHD is unfocused too much of the time. “There are differences between a child and a teen with ADHD,” Cheyette says. When a younger child has ADHD, parents tend to be more forgiving and helpful with their unfocused behaviors. A teen with ADHD may want their independence but lack the skills to focus and control their impulses. This can lead to more severe consequences than when they were younger. But parents can help their teens with ADHD improve their focus.

1. Positive Thinking

PARENTING

When a teen is interested in doing a particular task, it will be easier to accomplish. “Most people become more focused when they decide they want to do something,” says Cheyette. “If you say to yourself, I don’t feel like doing this, then you probably won’t.” For example, if your teen doesn’t like doing homework, encouraging them to change their mindset can help improve their focus. Reframing the negative thought (“I don’t want to do my homework”) in a more positive light (“Finishing my homework will make me feel good about this class”) can help a teen become more focused and complete the task.

2. The Right Surroundings Emily, a parent of a 14-year-old son diagnosed with ADHD, has found that choosing the right environment helps her son’s mindset. “I encourage him to stay after school to do his homework,” she says. “This way he doesn’t become distracted by things at home, like his phone, and he can receive help from his teachers.”

3. Healthy Lifestyle Choices Cheyette also stresses the importance of a healthy lifestyle for improving and maintaining focus. Eating healthy, getting enough sleep and making time to exercise can all contribute to improved focus for teens with ADHD. Sleep problems can lead to issues with memory and impulse control for any child, but especially kids with ADHD. Jen, a parent to a 12-year-old daughter diagnosed with ADHD, agrees with Cheyette about the importance of eating healthy and getting enough sleep. Her daughter experiences intense mood swings and an inability to deal with stress when she doesn’t eat or sleep well.

4. Setting Goals Cheyette says that setting goals can help teens with ADHD improve their focus and achieving their goals will help them feel successful. As a parent, you may be tempted to provide directions or nag your child to make sure they are working towards their goals, but it’s important for teens to actively set and own their goals. But you can still help them. “Make observations and ask questions,” Cheyette recommends. “If you notice your son’s backpack is a mess, instead of saying, ‘You need to organize your backpack,’ try saying, ‘It must be difficult to find your homework when your backpack looks like this’ or ‘How are you able to find your homework?’” Once you’ve framed the problem, she says, “Ask questions such as, ‘How can you help yourself?’ or ‘How can you act differently next time?’ to allow your child to think about and own their behaviors.

5. Medication Like younger kids, teens can benefit from medication. Amy, a parent of a 15-year-old son diagnosed with ADHD, bought her son a trampoline to use after school to help him release his energy. And the exercise was helpful. But she saw the most improvement when her son began taking medication. “Once he was medicated he could use self-regulating strategies,” she says. “Before that, he wasn’t able to learn these strategies since he couldn’t pay attention.” Cheyette wants to remind parents that you are your child’s best advocate and the parents interviewed here agree. “The best advice I can give other parents is to tell them that there may be really bad times, but your child needs to know that you are in their court,” Jen says. “When your child feels like a failure or has no friends, or school is horrible, they need to be able to come home to you and release their frustrations and emotions.” *names have been changed for privacy

Are You Training for TOLERANCE? Jaime Bessko

One of my dogs had a wellness appointment at the Veterinarian this week, and the staff complimented my dog’s ability to take direction and accept handling.

When a dog is throwing a tantrum to get out of a situation, not only is it dangerous, but its an indication that both Trust AND Respect are not present in the relationship. A dog that does not trust and respect his handler is much more likely When they needed his weight, I pointed to the to have behavioral issues, become anxious, scale and said PLACE. When they needed to check his ears and teeth, A dog that struggles to adapt to new I gently held his head and said EASY, which environments, new people and new situations means, you need to stay still and calmly accept can be stressful to manage and enjoy. this restraint and handling. For so many reasons, a dog’s TOLERANCE When it was time to check his rectal temperature, level has a large impact on the satisfaction of course he wanted to hold his tail down and in your relationship. So do a favor for your block access…. But a simple command of EASY veterinarians, groomers, your dog and and he knew to relax, lick the peanut butter they YOURSELF by building your dog’s TOLERANCE provided and the activity will be over soon with for touch and expanding their comfort zone so his calm cooperation. everyone can stay safe and your human-canine When it was time to collect a blood draw, we relationship can fully blossom. repeated the same process. EASY command and calmly restrained him. If you’ve met my shepherd mix, Hoodie, then you know he is dog that does NOT enjoy being touched. BUT we do a lot training to build his TOLERANCE for accepting touch because he must trust me and the situations I put him for me to properly care for him. He needs to accept handling, even when he doesn’t enjoy it. I need to be able to trim his nails, brush his coat, clean his ears and eyes, bathe him, sometimes wipe a dirty butt, pull a pricker out of a paw, restrain him when needed, tend to him after an unexpected surgery or help care for an injury. He also needs to accept handling at the Vet’s office so we can properly maintain his health.
