Tell us a bit about yourself, where are you from originally, about your family and where you live presently: A. I consider myself a Midwest girl! As a military family, we moved around a bit when I was young. I spent most of my youth in Nebraska before moving to Colorado many moons ago. My husband, Robert, and I moved to Erie in 2002, when I had the privilege to open my business here. We have one son, Brian, who is a graduate of Erie High School and who has a family of his own. We are proud grandparents to three darling little girls and the “parents” of one spoiled Great Dane puppy, Zoey. Q. Why is this a special year for you at State Farm? A. This year, 2022, is a milestone year for me. Not only is this the 100th Anniversary of State Farm, but I will be celebrating 20 years in business (45 years in the industry... all with State Farm). I opened my State Farm agency on June 1st, 2002. I could not have asked for a better place to live, raise a family and own a business than Erie.
Q. You are known to give back to so many non-profits and local Erie schools. Can you share with us some of the boards you’ve sat on and non-profits that you’ve helped over all the years in Erie: A. With success in a community, comes responsibility to help make it a better place and to help others. It’s been an honor to have served on the board or been a member of so many of the organizations in town. Over the years, I served on the board of the Erie Chamber of Commerce in many capacities, which gave me the opportunity to help existing and new businesses in town. I’ve been a member of the Erie Optimist Club and served as the treasurer for several years, an amazing organization that provides resources to the children of the community. My membership with the Erie Historical Society has allowed me to sponsor Biscuit Days, which teaches residents about the history of our amazing town. I love being a sponsor of the Erie Farmer’s market too! In addition to the community non-profits, I’ve been fortunate to be able support our local schools with financial resources to support their events, purchase equipment needed or provide supplies. I’ve participated in funding and donations for Erie Uplink as well. One of my proudest affiliations is with the Erie Education Foundation, I’ve been a proud donor to their scholarship fund since their inception. Our children are our future, and it is important to me to invest back into the community to support their growth.
Q. Why should someone in Erie reach out to you about their insurance needs? A. It’s important to me to build relationships with my customers, making sure that my team and I are adequately protecting what is most important to them. We take time to educate the importance of the coverage they choose. When a devastating event occurs, I want my customers to know that they will be taken care of. Designate a space in your house for your overflow items (ideally not the pantry) Organize this space by categories (ie: snacks, sides, household items, etc.) Create a list and stick to it - take inventory of what you have and what you need Upon your return home, put everything in its designated space Organize your fridge and pantry so that the oldest items, or those with a short shelf life, are front and center 6. Repeat before every trip The goal here is to have you be a more thoughtful shopper. To honor your space in your home by reducing clutter and possibly being less wasteful with your time, money and products. Find what works for you but take some time to consider if bulk life is working for you or creating more stress.

200ml of vegetable oil 1 large egg 2-3 garlic cloves pinch of salt splash of lemon juice

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 yellow onion 1 diced red bell pepper 1/4 cup roasted peppers 4 diced garlic cloves 3 diced ripe tomatoes 1 tsp spanish paprika 1 pinch saffron salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup white wine 2 cups Spanish rice 5 cups broth half cup frozen peas your choice of proteins and seafood lemons for garnish 1/4 chopped parsley
DIRECTIONS 1. Sauté the proteins until brown and set aside. 2. On medium heat, add olive oil in Paella pan 3. Add onions, peppers, and garlic to oil and cook until translucent. 4. Add chopped tomato, paprika, saffron, rice, salt & pepper. Cook for a few minutes. 5. Add white wine and continue cooking. 6. After a few minutes, poor broth slowly. 7. Jiggle the pan until you get rice to an even layer. * Don’t over jiggle* 8. Add protein. 9. Bring to boil 10. Reduce to medium/low heat. Cook for 15-18 minutes uncovered 11. Sprinkle peas and roasted red peppers *At the 20 minute mark check to see if liquid has been absorbed with the rice. If so, add 1/4 broth or water.* 12. Remove pan from heat and cover with lid or tin foil. Cool for 5-10 minutes. 13. Garnish with lemon slices, roasted red pepper and parsley
PROTEIN SUGGESTIONS: Vegan Paella: tofu, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, artichokes, garbanzo beans, etc. vegan broth. Meat Paella: chicken, chorizo, morsel, pork, rabbit, lamb, etc. chicken broth. FOR RUNNING SEASON
When we warm up it is important to get the blood flowing
JERIC TONEY D.C. Hey runners and weekend warriors. We have had a lot of snow lately, but we are quickly approaching the running and triathlon seasons! Or at least we hope we are… fingers crossed. So, as the weather warms let’s talk about how you should approach warming up for a run. Dynamic or static stretching? Have you tried either before running or do you just walk out the door and take off down the trail? Dynamic stretching typically involves movement with the stretch while static stretching is just holding a stretch in one position for a set time. Both have their benefits, and both have their time to be utilized but let’s take a look at them a little closer and see when and how they should be used. When we warm up it is important to get the blood flowing. You know the feeling when you get up first thing and everything is stiff and cold right? That is not the time to try to stretch and hold because the muscles are not in a state to allow for that. Incorporating movement into our warmup allows for the tissues to warm up. Active dynamic stretching techniques have been shown to increase performance for general populations while static stretching increases flexibility but decreases force and power output (Lima, C. et. al). This means that static stretching does increase range of motion, but it leaves the muscle fatigued. Fatigued muscles could lead to a decrease in stability and open the door for an injury during the run. Dynamic stretching for five minutes has been shown to decrease hamstring stiffness, increase knee range of motion and decrease potential injury (Iwata, M. et al). A decrease in stiffness in the hamstring means a longer and more balanced stride. Another study found that muscle stiffness significantly decreased after dynamic stretching whereas no significant change was seen after static stretching (Zhang, X. et al). As always, we encourage you to work with a trainer, coach, doctor that knows your history and your goals. That way it is clear to everyone what you want to accomplish. Get out and get moving!

My mom deemed the Internet useless back in the early 2000s when it became mainstream. Like other new technology, she resisted it. I knew she would love a digital camera, but she refused to buy one insisting her camera worked fine. Since she wouldn’t buy a camera, I gave her one as a gift, and as predicted she was snapping pictures of everything. An Internet connection was not as simple as purchasing a camera. There is a monthly fee, and it requires a computer connection. She lived most of her life without the Internet so she thought it was unnecessary. By the time 95% of the population was surfing the net, she finally caved. Once she learned how to use emails, she sent me a minimum of ten per day, and about nine of those emails, I deleted without reading. I informed her of this fact. I even typed “unsubscribe” in response to one of her emails, yet she continued to either forward or send. Most of the emails she sent were forwards of articles for a town she didn’t even live in anymore. One email subject said, “FW: NEWS UPDATE: Miley Cyrus Spotted Food Shopping.” As you can imagine I didn’t read it. She also sent elaborate recipes even though I don’t cook or bake. When I see the subject
line with a recipe title, I hover the mouse over the trash bucket icon and then press delete. A lot of the emails are things you would say in passing conversation or looking for suggestions like this one: Subject: Laptop Email Message: This laptop is a lost cause--I bought it last August and it has gotten worse and worse-it takes FOREVER to do anything--if you see any good deals, please let me know.... before this dies completely... I rolled my eyes after I read it, thinking “she waited FOREVER to get an Internet connection, and now it’s not quick enough for her??” I wouldn’t want to leave out the fact she likes sending weather-related emails. Subject: Snow Email message: For those of you who are news-free--they are predicting 6 inches to a possible blizzard ( foot or more) of snow this weekend-starting Friday night here... She knows I don’t like to watch the news, but unlike her, I do have other ways of gathering weather information like checking the weather app on my phone. Some emails I have to open. Like when I read this subject: Subject: GRRRRRRROSS!!!!!!!! Email Message: A live mouse caught in the trap under the sink -- moved the trap to the back under the
pipes and trying to go down the hole where pipes come in.-- but the trap won’t go down with him..... and Dad can’t get him out!!!!!
email, I wondered what happened to the poor mouse trying to escape? Did it make it?
You get the idea. I’m either deleting or rolling my eyes when I receive an email from her. The emails start coming in around 8 a.m. and then are sporadically sent throughout the day. Until one day when I didn’t get any.
These emails have her personality all over it and I’m grateful to receive them. As I continued to read the emails I thought about how this was her way of keeping in touch with me. I then typed the following email:
My mom had an accident and shattered her shoulder. She needed a total shoulder replacement surgery. At first, I didn’t notice the lack of emails since I was visiting her in the hospital and was concerned about whether she would be okay. Before her surgery, I was really worried.
Subject: Subscribe Email Message: I would like to please re-subscribe to your email list. I really miss it.
The surgery ended up being successful, but she was unable to type for months which meant she was unable to send emails. Instead of being happy about the lack of something I thought was annoying, I felt this strange sense of loss. I went into my email trash bucket and recovered all her deleted emails, creating a saved folder for the messages. As I read the emails, I found myself smiling with a new perspective, noticing the nuances of the messages for the first time. I went back to the forward about Miley Cyrus and this time I read it. I thought about how she still read the local news from the town she used to live in because she probably misses it. When I saw how she wrote FOREVER in all caps in the email about the laptop, I envisioned her feeling frustrated but able to laugh about it. In the weather email, I chuckled as I thought about how she was poking fun at me for not watching the news. And reading the mouse

Dear Jaime: Dear Jaime: People want to pet my puppy and I have a hard time saying NO. Now my dog is pulling towards everyone and not paying attention to me. What do I do? Jaime: This is a common occurrence during puppy socialization for people to OVERDUE the act of accepting touch from strangers in public. Of course we want a dog that loves people and won’t bite our friends or strangers. But what’s important to know, is that the more your dog is attracted to other reinforcers in the environment, the more you will compete against those reinforcers for your dog’s attention. So what’s the solution? Always focus on your goals and adjust your training to match your desired outcome. Don’t just see your dog as a puppy, but as an adult dog learning desirable behaviors. If you don’t want a 60 lb adult dog jumping on people, then don’t let your growing 15 lbs puppy do it. If you don’t want your adult dog pulling towards people and jumping on them, then stop letting your puppy do this. If you don’t want your adult dog pulling towards store employees begging for treats, then stop letting other people give your dog treats in public. Once your puppy is accepting of touch and enjoying strangers, that’s enough of building that behavior. (Unless you’ve got a livestock guardian breed, I suggest a different protocol) When I’m handling a dog in public, I want the dog’s attention on me and I want the dog to ENJOY engaging with me. I want to be associated with FUN — not as the Keeper of Fun! So as you’re raising your puppy, focus on creating the behaviors that you want your ADULT dog to exhibit. Adjust your training many times throughout the course to ensure you are moving towards your goals.
