New Equestrian Australia CEO By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA
The new CEO of Equestrian Australia, Darren Gocher, has taken up the reins and is riding, already fully immersed in his new leadership role. Darren has been taking time to listen and discuss the challenges of the sport, what is working and what changes need to be made. Keen to start moving forward, Darren is focusing on key priorities and strategies to get the organisation back on track. These key areas of focus include governance reform, stakeholder engagement, implementing the integrity framework, ensuring our funding is restored, and providing a safe sport for all involved. Appreciating there is much work to be done, Darren is eager to get stuck in. "I am really looking forward to tackling some of the challenges over the next few months," Darren said. Moving to EA after five years at Athletics Australia, including the last four years as CEO, Darren has plenty of experience in the area of improving sporting bodies. Overseeing major initiatives within Athletics, as well as developing a framework to enable unification across the different levels of that sport, Darren is wellpositioned to lead EA into a stronger and more sustainable future.

Women recognised as leaders in sport By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Recently Sport Australia announced the recipients of the Women Leaders in Sport Leadership Workshop places. There were a total of nine women involved in Equestrian who were named on the 2021 list. Congratulations to Amber Evans (Equestrian, Pony Club), Anne-Marie Cruickshank (Equestrian), Ashley Copping (Equestrian), Christine Edgoose (Equestrian), Danila Lochrin (Equestrian), Melinda Robinson, (Equestrian), Olivia Ruzsicska (Equestrian), Rachel Ratini, (Equestrian, Pony Club), Sallyann Neve (Equestrian, Pony Club) and Samantha Duffy (Equestrian). Ashley Copping took some time out to explain how she got involved. Ashley described what inspired her to apply and shared her advice for other women considering applying for such grants. Having grown up around cross country courses with her dad, Wayne Copping, Ashley said it was inevitable that she would become a Technical Delegate or somehow be involved in the sport. "I was shown the Women Leaders in Sport Leadership Workshop page on an

Eventing officials Facebook group and thought it was interesting,” she said. “I've only just become the Event Director for Naracoorte Horse Trials in 2020 and thought this program might help me to develop the skills needed to be more effective in the role and in the Equestrian community. "I was very lucky to get a letter of support from dad as the Chairman of Naracoorte Horse Trials." With a masters in International Trade and Development, after a degree in Economics
and Marketing, Ashley can confirm she really enjoys learning new things, expanding her knowledge and working on personal development. Ashley is encouraging of anyone who may be considering applying in the future. "There are so many grants and opportunities out there for people, and I would have never known about this one without it being shared in our group, so I hope more people will share these opportunities in the future,” Ashley said.

The Horse Report Joint supplements – just use what works Ask any owner, trainer or rider of performance or race horses what joint supplement they use and you are likely to receive a different answer every time – from herbal to marine based products, oils and powders to injectables, it is an over saturated industry of which many are confused about. The reason for the confusion is that joints are a complicated mechanism. Joints have multiple components and therefore there are multiple ways of managing and preventing the many things that can go wrong. However, in the quest to develop supplements to achieve joint health, the ingredients contained in them are often not necessary, or not in the correct form or size to reach the joint and be of any use. Oral joint supplements generally contain a few key ingredients which may be found alone or in various combinations. They vary in price from reasonably economical to very expensive, with liquids generally being more expensive than powders. For a joint supplement to be effective it must first be absorbed through the gut. It then must travel through the circulatory system to the joints, and thirdly the body must be able to use it in repair of joint tissue. Each ingredient requires careful research through all processes of absorption, targeting the correct tissue, and efficacy it can be given the ultimate seal of approval. Recently, several studies have shown that joint supplements vary considerably in their potency and some commercially available supplements do not contain the amount of ingredient listed on the label. Unlike vitamin and mineral supplements, the ingredients used in joint products do not have a widely accepted standard for potency, source, and proven efficacy. Also, because the sources are so varied, verifying safety and purity of a particular ingredient becomes a challenge. There is one ingredient that most oral joint supplements have in common, and there is a major reason for this. Glucosamine is a naturally occurring, nontoxic molecule that is the most important and useful ingredient in joint supplements. It has been proven countless times to decrease pain and improve mobility in osteoarthritic joints in a number of human and equine studies and is included either as glucosamine hydrochloride or as glucosamine sulphate. The former is a more concentrated form of glucosamine, containing more per gram than the sulphate form. What is glucosamine? Glucosamine is an amino sugar that is the vital precursor in the synthesis of collagen and glucosaminoglycans (GAGs) in joint cartilage, and in the production of hyaluronic acid (HA), the dominant ingredient of synovial fluid. Glucosamine plays a key role in reducing inflammation by inhibiting destructive enzymes and scavenging free radicals that cause inflammation, pain and destroy the cartilage matrix integrity. The role of glucosamine in preventing articular cartilage degradation has been known for some time and glucosamine is the oral supplement of choice for the management of osteoarthritis in man. The beneficial effects of glucosamine may take up to three weeks to occur however it is very safe and suitable for long term use. Glucosamine is a trustworthy and reliable ingredient in joint supplements and the molecule size and structure ensures optimum bio-availability above many of the other ingredients commonly used to treat and manage joint problems.

The Horse Report How does Omega-3 supplementation boost mare fertility? By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic
If you are planning to breed your mare this season, now is the time to start ensuring her nutrition is optimized to give her the best possible chance to conceive first breeding cycle. The addition of less than a cupful of the right Omega-3 source can improve your mare's chances of going into foal this season on her first mating. Although Omega-3 supplementation for broodmares is proven to boost fertility, best results are obtained when mares are maintained on a roughage based diet with correct mineral balance and adequate calories and proteins at least three to six months prior to breeding. They should not be over or under weight, but be fed to maintain a healthy body condition. This allows their bodies the best chance to cycle normally in the spring and be well nourished to grow a healthy foal. Modern equine breeding enterprises also take advantage of research conducted over the last 20 years into utilising Omega-3 fatty acids to further boost mare fertility and improve the rates of positive pregnancies after the first cycle of mating. In the 48 hours after breeding, natural inflammatory processes in the mare's uterus expels fluid containing semen, bacteria and other debris as part of a normal defence system to prevent infection. Some mares are susceptible to a condition known as persistent post-breeding endometritis (PPBEM) which occurs where the uterine cleaning mechanisms fail, and inflammation persists beyond 48 hours causing the uterus to hold excess fluid which is toxic to the embryo when it enters the uterus five to six days after ovulation. Additionally sperm motility is reduced by the accumulation of neutrophils (specialised white blood cells) present in the inflamed uterus which further reduces the chances of successful fertilisation and pregnancy.
Supplementation with marine-sourced Omega-3s (DHA and EPA) improves colostrum quality and passive transfer of antibodies to foals.
Mares with PPBEM have an increased rate of embryonic loss and a lower overall pregnancy rate than those without the condition, causing considerable financial loss to horse breeders. PPBEM has been identified as the major reason for mares failing to conceive. It is thought to affect approximately 15% of Thoroughbred mares after natural cover. Furthermore, early embryonic death rates are three times higher in mares with this condition than in normal mares. Fortunately, carefully timed insemination and management practices including supplementation with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce the incidence of PPBEM in mares bred naturally and with frozen semen. Research demonstrates that EPA and DHA supplements may improve mare fertility with: z More mares in foal first cycle;
z More mares in foal during foaling heat; z Improved blood flow to support growth of a new dominant follicle; z Increased follicle size and egg viability; z Enhanced embryo quality; and z Reduced risk of uterine infection. Omega-3 supplementation also supports the general health and well-being of mares through benefits to skin, reduction of itch, enhanced immune system function, maintenance of normal respiratory health, improved insulin sensitivity in overweight horses and reduced inflammatory hormones in joint fluid, indicating potential benefits to aging or arthritic broodmares. Supplementation with marine-sourced Omega-3s (DHA and EPA) improves colostrum quality and passive transfer of antibodies to foals and facilitates normal development of the brain and nervous system in foals. When should I supplement Omega-3? From page 10
Breeding stallions also benefit from Omega-3 supplementation. Research in horses shows that supplementing with DHA improves both sperm quality and quantity and improves sperm survival during in chilled and frozen semen. When should I supplement Omega-3? Research shows improved fertility when mares begin Omega-3 supplementation at least 60 days prior to insemination. Benefits continue for both the mare, foetus and subsequent foal when supplementation continues throughout pregnancy and lactation until weaning and is then transferred into the foal's diet until maturity. How should I choose an Omega-3 Supplement? The amount and type of fatty acids are not the same in all Omega-3 supplements. DHA, EPA and ALA are different types of Omega-3 fatty acids. Horses need all three types because they perform different roles in the body. The main sources of alphalinolenic acid (ALA) in horse diets are green grass, chia seeds, linseeds or linseed oil. Other vegetable oils do contain ALA, but they contain much higher levels of Omega-6 making them unsuitable for correcting dietary omega balance. ALA is important for hormone regulation as well as heart and circulatory system health.
Linseeds or linseed oil are a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids Although horses can convert ALA to DHA this is a very inefficient process (less than 10% is converted) and a negligible amount is converted to EPA. Therefore seafood and algal sourced Omega-3s are recommended to supply EPA and DHA directly to the diets of breeding and growing horses. In addition to their reproductive benefits, EPA and DHA are important for brain, eye and heart health, development and maintenance of the nervous system, cell membrane integrity and for oxygen transfer. DHA levels are especially high in the retina (eye), brain, and sperm cells.
How to feed linseed to horses Linseed is highly nutritious and rich in proteins and oils. It is the small brown seed of the flax or linen plant. Fed as a linseed jelly, cake or oil it has the benefits of improving the horse's condition and produce a glossy shine to an equine coat. How to prepare and cook linseed jelly for horses A daily quota of 6 oz - 1 lb (200 - 450 grams ) of linseed (pre-cooked weight) for each horse is advised. To prepare linseed for cooking first soak overnight in cold water in an old saucepan. When the linseed has been soaked, add more water, if necessary, before bringing to the boil and boiling for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes of boiling reduce the heat and simmer the linseed for 2-3 hours- until it forms a jelly. Keep a careful watch on the jelly as it is cooking, do not allow it to dry out and add more water if necessary. Before feeding cooked linseed jelly to your horse or pony, ensure that the linseed has cooled to blood temperature - otherwise it may scald your horse's mouth.

Adjust your feeds from day to day By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS Did you know it’s perfectly ok to adjust the amount of feed you give your horse from day to day? In fact it’s something we recommend you do, for a couple of reasons. First is that it helps keep behavior level and calm. Horses are funny creatures in that they will express the amount of calories/energy in their diet in their behavior. Which means if you feed more than they need, you may cause a change in behavior with potentially more hyperactivity than you might want. To help prevent this, you can simply adjust how much you feed according to how much work is being done. Using FeedXL, you can create balanced diets for rest days, light work days and harder work days, with less calories in the diet for rest days and increasing calories for light and harder work days. Then feed each diet according to the work your horse does

Mudfever a condition or a symptom By HIFORM AUSTRALIA Mudfever is a common condition causing scabby inflamed areas on the skin, that mainly affects the pasterns and lower leg region. It is often seen in muddy and wet conditions, however it is also seen with humidity and changing temperatures, from hot and cold and wet and dry. It is a fungal infection which breeds with moisture. However, the real question is this just a symptom to something further going on? When the horse’s immune system is functioning optimally, it can defend itself from viruses, bacteria and fungus. This is what the immune system is designed for. Only when it is not functioning optimally or if the pathogen is extremely robust do we see illness appear. This can be the case in some cases of mudfever, however it is more common that it is due to a combination of environmental factors and poor immune function. What does the immune system encompass?
Mudfever is a common condition causing scabby inflamed areas on the skin, mainly affecting the pasterns and lower leg region
It provides a barrier and defence to the horse’s body from infection. The skin is the first barrier, followed by the digestive tract; especially the microbiome. This means if the bacteria in the
digestive tract are imbalanced the immune system won’t function as well as it should. Conditions such as scours, ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, worm burden, etc. all will directly affect immune function.

This is more so the case with horses who suffer from auto-immune disorders or are on immuno suppressants or steroid treatment. Environmental factors such as poor stable management can also lead to a variety of skin conditions such as mud fever. Certain beddings such as straw, breed more bacteria than the likes of wood shavings. Ensuring the bedding is regularly monitored and kept clean as well as ensuring that highly absorbable bedding is used, will reduce the chance of unwanted bacterial growth. FEI Australian Endurance Championships. By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA The Australian FEI Championships for 2021 have been awarded to the Canobolas Endurance Riders Club Inc, in Orange, NSW. Following the significant effects of COVID-19 in 2020, FEI Endurance has seen a resurgence this year and there is considerable excitement around the awarding of the FEI 3* 160km event to be titled the Matar Endurance Stables 160km FEI Australian Championships. The event will be hosted as part of the prestigious Matar Stables Bullio Cup, from the 29th to the 31st of October 2021. The Matar Stables Bullio Cup is an Endurance horse ride catering to everyone from young children and families, to serious Endurance athletes. The ride base is located at Four Mile Creek, near the food and wine city of Orange. The course traverses through the picturesque Canobolas State Forest and neighbouring farmland. Although safe for both horse and rider, the course is known as being technical, with altitude

differentials that require diligent horsemanship to perform successfully. FEI Endurance seems to be bouncing back well from COVID-19, with a number of new competitions scheduled for this year. Competitors have been encouraged by the recent success of Queenslander, Andrea Laws-
King, who performed admirably at the World Endurance Championships in Pisa, Italy in May. She took out 24th position, from 72 starters, riding her homebred horse, Heathfield’s Bin Sadaqa. Further to this, the individual winner of the event was a rider from the UAE piloting an Australian-bred horse, Bullio

New Australian Grand Prix Freestyle record By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Simone Pearce and the black stallion Destano have done it again and set another Australian record. Recently they set the Australian record for the Grand Prix Freestyle by scoring 81.385% in Budapest (HUN) at the Pilisjászfalu CDI-W competition, also claiming overall victory in the class! "Thank you Destano. Wow it was a magic day for us. This is a new personal best for us as well as a new Australian Grand Prix Freestyle record," Simone said. "He felt so happy and absolutely with me as we danced through our brand new Freestyle. “I really just couldn’t be more thrilled with him this show, it’s been an amazing preparation for Tokyo (we hope). “Thanks to everyone who makes this possible. “I’m humbly grateful for everyday to be working with these wonderful horses." The latest result means the 29year-old Simone and her top ranked Destano hold all three

straight win for the combination over the past six weeks. The Grand Prix Freestyle record was previously held by Olympian Mary Hanna and her mare Calanta with a score of 80.145%, which was achieved at Willinga Park Dressage by the Sea in 2020. The success in Hungary on Destano has added yet another accolade to Simone's trove after dominating the show over the weekend. Simone also won the CDI4* Grand Prix Special on Double Joy with a score of 70.553% in the horses first ever Grand Prix Special competition, a day after winning the Grand Prix with a score of 71.826% which also qualified the combination for consideration for the Australian team at Tokyo. In addition to Destano and Double Joy, Simone has also qualified Amandori for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Both Destano and Amandori are owned by the German stud Gestüt Sprehe GmbH and Simone, while Double Joy is owned by Sabine Rüben.

Intensity reveals capacity in training By TANJA KRAUS As we work with and train our horses we look for progress markers - Beginning usually with the horse understanding a cue, then responding to the cue consistently correctly, then perhaps being able to hold the manoeuvres for a longer period, and longer and so on. Another way to measure progress or understanding is to increase the intensity in which you are asking for the manoeuvre - This could be environmental pressure like a change in environment or a change in the social makeup (number of horses), or it could be asking the horse to perform the action in an increased gait, immediately following an increased gait, or with added 'pressure' in other ways. Using intensity as a gauge we can simply test our training and see if it is solid enough to be utilised under pressure. An example I had with GingerCoops this week was a simple 'line drill' in a group lesson. In his first week of training, when I asked him to simply

Showjumpers selected for Tokyo The Australian Olympic Equestrian Team for Tokyo has been finalised, with Edwina TopsAlexander, Jamie Kermond and Katie Laurie selected by the Australian Olympic Committee. The selection of the three jumpers completes the nine-strong Equestrian team set to represent Australia at the Games, with the dressage and eventing teams already named. Tops-Alexander will compete in her fourth Olympics, while Kermond and Laurie will both make their Australian Olympic debut in Tokyo. Kermond will ride Yandoo Oaks Constellation, owned by Kerrie Winning, and will be supported by groom Cody Mulder. Despite Tokyo being the first Olympics for the combination, they are no strangers to success in the international arena, having been part of the 2018 World Equestrian Games Team which secured Australia’s team quota for Tokyo 2020. Laurie will ride Casebrooke Lomond, coowned by Katie and Jackson Laurie with Sheena Ross, and will be assisted by groom Ashlyn Cuku. Laurie has ridden Casebrooke Lomond throughout his entire 10-year career, taking on the ride when the horse was just threeyears-old. Tops-Alexander will head to Tokyo with the 13-year-old bay mare Identity Vitseroel, a horse she owns herself and with whom she has been partnered with since 2019. Reesa Pihu, Tops-Alexander’s long-time groom, will aid the experienced combination at the Games. Tops-Alexander said she is honoured to ride at her fourth Olympics. “I’m once again honoured to be chosen to represent Australia at the Tokyo Olympics,”
she said. “Although it will be a slightly different Olympics it’s the one everyone has been waiting for. “It’s already an achievement in itself to be selected, and it’s a chance to proudly represent Australia which doesn’t happen that often for the showjumping team. “It means a lot to me to represent my country in the best possible way and I want to wish everyone else the best of luck” The showjumping team reserve combination will be Rowan Willis and Blue Movie, whom Willis co-owns with David and Elsa Willis, Renee Willis, Michael and Wendy Jackson and Warren Coventry. The combination will travel alongside the selected team to Japan and will be supported by groom Robert Buniowski. Whiskers must stay put for FEI competition Supplied by the FEI The FEI would like to draw the attention of all National Federations that as of 1 July 2021 a penalty of disqualification (not being able to compete) will be issued if horses are found to have their sensory hairs clipped or shaven at an FEI competition, as per point (i) of the FEI Veterinary Regulations Article 1004 (Prohibited methods) unanimously voted at the FEI General Assembly 2020. This applies to all FEI Events as of 1 July, including the Tokyo 2020 Games. Here is an extract of point (i) from the FEI Veterinary Regulations Article 1004 (prohibited methods): Horses are not permitted to compete in FEI Events: i) if the Horse’s sensory hairs have been clipped and/or shaven or in any other way removed unless individual sensory hairs have been removed by a veterinarian to prevent pain or discomfort for the horse.

Horses helping humans By SUE SPENCE When I started Horses Helping Humans (HHH) 16 years ago, I had no idea it would become an award-winning program and earn the reputation it has of being an outcome based Equine Intervention so popular with family and youth services and for my story to be published by Pan Macmillan. We have now had 1000s of students through the program with proven outcomes of helping change lives for the better. It was these outcomes, which led me to license HHH so the program would help those in other communities. Becoming a licensee means you actually become part of your local community as only one license is granted per area. eg ( HHH Gold Coast, HHH Sunshine Coast etc ) Helping you become a respected youth and family service within your government boundary lines assures the quality and outcomes delivered at a professional level are the same in every area. This assures that case workers and counsellors in all areas can confidently refer to HHH for communications intervention and assist them with opening the doors of communication with their challenging clients. This helps them immensely when applying for their own funding, as HHH is a known program for helping with re-
engagement back into school or study. Youth and family services, school chaplains or counsellors, mental health organisations, child protection, homeless youth, DV services and the Justice Dept refer the students we work with. The training covers extensive communication and body language techniques as well as requiring horsemanship ground skills to be of a high level. (The program is based on professional horsemanship, self-regulation and life skills which translate straight into everyday life situations.) The License includes full business set up, extensive hands-on individual training with me at HHH on the Gold Coast as well as me working with Licensees at their property with their horses. It also includes, me speaking at Licensees’ local Youth and Family interagency meetings to discuss outcomes and the referral system, I contact local council, MPs and training colleges, my attendance at the opening as I organise a media launch and offer ongoing support. Everything from invoice templates and advertising, referral forms, training manuals, videos, workbooks for youth workers, horsemanship, media releases upon opening, follow up and our annual conference is included. It is the most rewarding career and it is a blessing to be able to help so many make positive changes in their lives.

Naracoorte trials attracts record entries Supplied by NARACOORTE HORSE TRIALS The Barastoc Naracoorte Horse Trials took place this May this year. The event, which started in 1975 as a junior 3DE, has now run consecutively for 47 years with the cross country always held at the same property, Strathyre, with the same landowners. It continues to be the only event in the world with this record, and it is something Event Director Ashley Copping is extremely proud of - “we couldn’t run in May 2020 so we postponed until November of that year to keep our record running. With so few events in South Australia, the riders were really pleased that we did.” These days the event is held at two venues: dressage and showjumping at the Naracoorte Polocrosse ground, which is about 10km from Naracoorte at Hynam and cross country at Strathyre, where Wayne and Prue Copping design and build the seven cross country courses. For 47 years, the CCI4* has been sponsored by IRT. Founding committee member John Paltridge worked for them, and IRT has continued their support in memoriam to him. Sarah Clark and LV Balou Jeanz finished on an impressive 37.3 to win the class. Second place went to Sophie Fox and off the track thoroughbred (OTT) Mr Pig on 45.1 (who also won the Racing SA OTT prize), while Steph Hann finished third on 49 with another OTT, named True Celebre. Sarah Clark and LV Balou Jeanz winners of the 4* class. The Kentucky Equine Research CCI3*-S saw Megan Jones finish first and second, with Guhr scoring 41.1 and Toulando scoring 42.8. Third place went to Wendy SchaefferMcDonald riding Sun Quest (OTT), with a score of 73.5. Sun Quest also won the

Racing SA OTT prize for this class. Megan has been attending Naracoorte Horse Trials since she was 14-years-old. “You simply don’t get going like this at any other event in the country. I wish the committee could run it twice a year,” Megan said. First-time sponsors, Little Equine Co, made the journey from the Hills to have a trade stand at the event. The Little Equine Co. CCI2*-S saw returning Victorian rider David Middleton and WEC In The Breeze scored 40 to take the win, ahead of Connie Miller and Delicato (OTT) on 51.2, and Jenny Bowker riding BMS Alexeah on 57.1. David even turned up to the prize-giving in his last NHT rug from 2005. Strathyre owner Peter Stuart made sure he went and spoke to all riders who have been coming for a long time, including David, who he last saw here in 2006.

The Mini Jumbuk CCN1*-S went to Asha Warnock and Alhambra Calligraphy on a great score of 31.2, with Sarah Clark in second on 35.3 with Casallia A, and Jessica Hill in third on 39 with ESB Irish Illusion. Mini Jumbuk has also been sponsoring the event for more than 40 years. “They look after our officials when they go into the shop, and previous winners always comment on the quality of the prizes received,” Ashley said. In the Evolution Animal Care Y/R CCN1*S, Chelsea Clarke and Highfield Chiquita’s Chico finished in first place on 33.2. Bella Masters and Samsonite were second on 43.2, while Jasmine Fordham and Burnbank Battalion were third on 48.5. The Bull Bros EVA95 went to Isabel Houghton and Yoicks Baltimore (OTT) on 30.8; the McDonalds Naracoorte EVA80 (Div 1) went to Kaitlin Smith and Classico on 27.5; the Naracoorte Lucindale Council EVA80 (Div 2) went to Isabel Houghton and Yoicks Kimikain on 30. The Tyre Power Naracoorte EVA65 (Div 1) went to Keely Hutchinson and Mouse Detective on 24.7 and the Equestrian SA EVA65 (Div 2) went to Ella Manning and Viewmont Lisa on 27.8. Promoting understanding between horse and rider By KAREN CLEGG It's 11am on a Saturday at Ourimbah Creek Equestrian - Sylvia Gordon, clad in riding boots and a navy jacket with ‘COACH’ emblazoned across the back, strides over to the tacking area. Her student Sharlene is tacking up her thoroughbred Buddy. Sylvia greets them warmly. After the initial pleasantries the conversation turns to the weather. It's drizzling lightly but the mood remains optimistic. It's agreed the lesson will proceed. Sylvia methodically checks the saddle, girth, and stirrups. After, she checks in with Sharlene who admits she's a little nervous. It's been a while since her last lesson and even longer attempting a jump. Sylvia reassures her they will work at her pace but first, a warm-up. Keeping step with Sylvia's long-legged frame, Sharlene leads Buddy towards the arena. Sylvia, a lifelong horse enthusiast, became interested in eventing a little over a decade ago. She quickly developed a passion for the sport and was soon president of the Hidden Valley One Day Event Committee; a position she held for 10 years. She went on to pursue qualifications as a G Level Dressage Judge and Level 1 G Coach through Equestrian Australia before establishing her business, Ourimbah Creek Equestrian, on the NSW Central Coast. Ourimbah Creek Equestrian offers event training and boasts a full-size sand dressage arena, show jumping arena, and cross country training course. It caters for beginners through to competent riders; though, Sylvia recognises not everyone wants to compete and she welcomes everyone regardless of their riding goals. "The only requirement is that you have your own horse," she says, making it clear she is not a riding school with a company herd. Horses are powerful animals and each year in Australia, people are injured while riding and working with horses. Most horses weigh around 500kg, are between 14-18 hands, and have an average speed of 40-48kph. A horse's sheer size and strength are reason enough for caution but even more so knowing that each horse has a mind of its own. Nevertheless, obtaining definitive statistics on injuries is difficult. Data is collected primarily for competitions and workplace injuries only, while minor to moderate incidents on private properties tend to go unreported. Kirrilly Thompson, in: Why the long face: just how risky is horse riding?, estimates there are 20 deaths a year , while workplace statistics report one Australian worker is hospitalised every day and that for every injured employee, 10 other people are hurt at these places. Is it possible, however, to reduce the risk? Thompson believes the focus should be on how to improve our ability to predict a horse's behaviour. This suggests people need to understand a horse's body language - what it wants or needs, and what it doesn't. Sylvia firmly believes that understanding your horse is as important as developing
Understanding your horse is as important as developing your skills as a rider. your skills as a rider. At the arena, Sylvia gets things rolling with a warm-up. She believes this is important for both horse and rider and especially for Buddy who has a touch of arthritis. Sylvia gets Sharlene and Buddy walking in circles. "Ok, Sharlene, we're going to make the circle even larger. Go to your leg first…press with your inside leg to move his body out a little…go to your inside hand…give a little rein aid… soften the rein…stay with your leg…look up at where you're going..." Soon, Sylvia suggests progressing to figure 8s. Sharlene gives Buddy the signal to turn. He gives several loud stamps of his back foot. "That's not something to be concerned about Sharlene…. just a fly bothering him," Sylvia's tone is calm and reassuring. They continue the warm up. Sylvia attributes safety and success in the saddle to several factors. Firstly, the horse and rider should be matched. "Horses get a sense of whether you know what you're doing," she said. "If you're not in control, your horse soon will be." Sylvia helped Sharlene look for a horse. They chose Buddy due to his placid and obedient nature, his age, and his experience. Next, is the importance of training the rider. "The better you make yourself as a rider, the better your horse will respond," Sylvia says. “Being a good rider means the horse isn't the one in control. "If your horse is in control, they'll do what they want." Sylvia focusses on a rider's technique, their position in the saddle, and using riding aids effectively. Another equally important factor, is understanding your horse. Sylvia encourages riders to be aware of their horse's temperament as well as its wants, needs, and fears which the horse communi-
cates through behaviour and body language. "We can all learn to read their body language," she says. “We can decide how best to respond once we understand what is happening in a situation.” Finally, Sylvia believes in retraining horses that exhibit less-desirable behaviours. She says that with time and patience a person can understand why the horse is acting a particular way. The person can then break the task into smaller more achievable segments for the horse which, when combined with the right motivator and repetition, will increase the horse's confidence and willingness. Sylvia checks in again to see if Sharlene and Buddy are ready for some trot poles on the ground. Sharlene hesitates, "He's a little fresh today… he's gonna pick up momentum." They discuss technique before adjusting the spacing of the poles. Sylvia encourages Sharlene to walk Buddy over the poles several times so he understands what is being asked of him. Buddy is not at all perturbed by the obstacle but clips the poles several times with a hoof. They then move to trotting up to the obstacle, transitioning to a walk directly before it, and returning to a trot once it has been cleared. "And, when you're ready, trot him over the poles," Sylvia says. Once Sharlene and Buddy are comfortable with this Sylvia increases the challenge. In addition to first-rate tuition, Ourimbah Creek Equestrian offers several other services. It is possible to agist your horse on the 18-acre property, request lessons or clinics at alternative locations by arrangement, and for the socially inclined Sylvia hosts monthly social jumping days (bookings essential). MAINTENANCE This is important, the basics when owning any horse and addressing your duty of care. These principals are a must before you start your show preparation and be done on a regular basis. No amount of money or work will transform your pony if you don’t practice the basics of pony/horse care. WORMING Your horse needs to be on a regular worming program appropriate to its age and environment. Young-stock are particularly susceptible to worm burdens so if your unsure your local vet can help you. It’s also a good
idea to rotate using different brands or wormer. It’s been proven over time the worms can become resistant to the same wormer. HOOF CARE As the old saying goes, no hoof, no horse. It is critical to ensure your horses hooves are maintained regularly. ,QFRUUHFW KRRI FDUH FDQ DIIHFW PRYHPHQW FRQ¿UPDWLRQ and soundness. EQUINE DENTISTY A horses teeth continue to grow throughout it’s lifetime. To maintain optimal food absorption and to ensure comfort during its work your horse needs to be seen by D YHW RU TXDOL¿HG HTXLQH GHQWLVW RQ D UHJXODU EDVHV HANDLING This might sound silly but your pony must have basic handling. You should be able to catch it, lead it, brush it all over and handle it safely. Every time you interact with your pony you are in fact teaching it. It’s good to practice and teach your horse to stand still and tie up quietly for periods of time. This is important when it comes time for clipping and show prepping your horse as we will discuss in more detail in a later issue. Last but not least. “BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.
T
he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).
While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).
KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin. These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.
Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.
As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.
The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS
Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.
