EA announces Dressage Chef d’Equipe 2023-24 By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Equestrian Australia (EA) has finalised its recruitment, with the EA Board recently ratifying the appointment of a Dressage Chef d’Equipe to provide leadership to Australian Dressage riders until 31 December 2024. Australia has a large contingent of riders based overseas, and in 2024 many Australian domiciled riders will travel to Europe to campaign for the Paris24 Olympics. High Performance Director, Will Enzinger, recognised the need for leadership within the Europe region and for the first-time, EA requested applicants for the Dressage Chef role be based in Europe or the UK. They are pleased to announce the appointment of Amanda Renouard. Amanda, a British citizen, has lived in France for the past 15 years where, with her husband (who is in event management) and son, currently managing their own horse breeding facility. Her career path started in horse nutrition where sales and marketing introduced her into many barns working with professional athletes. An interest in managing the athletes led to Amanda acting as an agent for many of the riders. Time spent in event management at some of the leading horse shows provided good background on the pressures behind the scenes at large events, and an understanding on how

Equestrian Australia is pleased to introduce Amanda Renouard as Dressage Chef d’Equipe, and welcomes her input and support to the Australian Equestrian Team. that affects officials, management teams, horses and riders. Amanda has also worked for other national federation, in consultancy capacities developing high performance programs and development. "I am honoured to be offered this opportunity to help the Australia Dressage Team achieve their

goals at the 2024 Paris Olympics and beyond,: Amanda said. “This comes at a time when Australia has some exciting horsepower and talented athletes alongside the very experienced riders. It is going to be a busy year and I am delighted to be part of it."

Safe fencing for your horses is important You want a safe, long lasting fence with low maintenance that looks good. You spend the money on keeping your horses safe and inevitably there are ongoing costs associated with replacing rotting posts, posts eaten by your horses, eaten by termites, burnt by fire, a fence line broken in a storm or an accident, painting etc - the list goes on. How about a fence post that is safe for animals, does not get eaten, does not rot, does not need painting and has no splinters or cracks to worry about ?? The Woodshield fence post ticks every box and has been around since 2004. It is a weather proof, chemical free timber post, fully encased in recycled plastic. The product was designed to eliminate the issue of end of life with treated timber posts and utilise Agri-waste instead of dumping it in landfill. The additional benefits of longer post life and lower maintenance came by default and provides nothing but advantages - who actually wants to paint posts. You can still attach the standard clips, screws, nails, flexible fencing, electric

tape, wire etc. You can still use a hammer or a drill. They are rammed/knocked in like a standard post depending on the ground and no gloves required to handle them - safe and non-toxic. The life span is 50-100 years and at the end of life they can be fully recycled. The poly outer can be peeled off like a banana and goes back into the recycling stream while the timber can be mulched back to the earth or burnt as there is no chemical to worry about. These fence posts are used all over the country in horse studs, vineyards, orchards and even in the ocean for growing oysters. Electro Magnetic Therapy PEMF for horses Electro Magnetic Therapy PEMF for Horses is a non-invasive process which applies a magnetic field to the cells within the body by pulsing electromagnetic impulse at a pre-set frequency and intensity. The gentle pulsing magnetic field restores health at a cellular level by stimulating cell metabolism, providing an effective, drug-free, and non-invasive way to aid numerous ailments. The pulse interacts with the ions present within specific cells, accelerating activity and expediting the flow of oxygen and nutrients. When applied to injuries, PEMF Therapy can assist in both kickstarting and boosting the healing process at a cellular level, whilst simultaneously accelerating the disposal of toxins and waste products. PEMF for horses has been safely used throughout Europe for more than 50 years. PEMF for horses was first introduced to the US in horse racing. Published scientific PEMF studies have proven neurological, physiological and psychological benefits. It is a widely used therapy for multiple conditions, improved health and enhanced performance of people and animals (including dogs, cats, show horses, race horses and pleasure horses).

Electro Magnetic Therapy PEMF for Horses is a non-invasive therapy that can address a wide range of ailments and conditions.

PEMF for horses can be used to aid the whole body or specific areas or injuries. It is non-invasive, and is not painful and does not require sedation. PEMF therapy can improve performance, range of motion, speed and strength. It reduces inflammation and relieves pain and can be used to calm a horse mentally before going into the showring. PEMF Therapy can aid many conditions: - Performance stress and body soreness - Soreness of the back, stifle, joints, neck, poll, TMJ, shoulder or hooves

- Soft tissue injuries - bruised or torn muscles, tendons and ligaments - Hoof abscess, stone bruises - Conditions of age such as Arthritis, Cushing's Disease systemic illness, immunity issues - Anhidrosis - Digestive issues - Wounds from surgery or injury including non-healing wounds - Bone issues - normal and nonhealing fractures - Laminitis, EPM or Founder - Lackluster health or performance - Improve behavioral issues associated with stress, mental tension and pain

- Faster recovery from performance, illness or injury Why Pulse PEMF? Studies on animal subjects have shown that PEMF may improve calcium and collagen production. Since animal athletes, work animals, and larger animals carrying a "wide load" put a lot of stress on their joints, this additional support coupled with increased range of motion could make a world of difference. As the tissues lining the joints deteriorate over time, PEMF can help aging animals produce these crucial nutrients their bodies need to keep thriving.

Steamed hay may benefit horses with asthma By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Bsc Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist ©Hi Form Australia 2023

It is important if your horses are stabled to have a well-ventilated stable and especially critical for horses prone to respiratory conditions or those who have been diagnosed with Equine Asthma (EA) this is now the all-embracing term used to describe respiratory diseases such as Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO and Heaves. Whilst it may be better to have horses with these conditions turned out, this is not always possible and then in spring and summer there is also the increased risk of allergies to several plants, trees, and pollens. If they are stabled, hay can be a major source of small particles in the air and steaming hay will decrease the dust and mould content. Hay replacements such as hay pellets such as Hi Form Complete AlphaFibre or FibrePlus are also an option to provide dust-free fibre intake. Also consider the option of decreasing chewing time and feeding smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. Supplying steamed hay in slow feeder hay nets is also recommended and feeding as low to ground level as possible is also ideal as the horses are more likely to inhale particles if they are chewing hay from a hay net or hay feeder at chest height or higher. In fact, eating any feed or hay at chest height or higher can cause all sorts of health issues. Eating in a natural, head-down position also assists with clearance and drainage from the respiratory tract. An important nutrient that has been shown to be beneficial for respiratory health is omega-3 fatty acids, for a few

Try to keep feed as low to the ground as possible to avoid health issues.

reasons. These fatty acids are absorbed into cell membranes throughout the body, including in the lungs, to support the integrity and pliability of the tissues. Omega-3 sources, especially those which supply or are highly converted to DHA and EPA (specific long-chain omega-3s), have anti-inflammatory properties. Horses suffering from respiratory issues, including asthma or allergies, feeding, preferably cold pressed Flax seed oil with a well-balanced diet to support your horse's respiratory health is an excellent inclusion and has very strong scientific support. Hi Form AlphaFlax oil is cold pressed and human grade. Many studies have suggested that steaming hay significantly decreases mould content and induced less tracheal mucus in horses. Steamed hay also induced BALF neutrophilia, and did not induce respiratory clinical signs. The relevance of steaming hay however warrants further investigations both in the context of prevention/therapy for EA horses at training and for long-term preclusion of lately developing EA. Study results have shown the most effective way to reduce microbial allergens in hay is through steaming, due to the high

heat application. In one study comparing the effect of soaking and steaming hay, only steaming effectively reduced the concentrations of both bacteria and mould contamination (Moore-Colyer et al., 2014). In fact, submerging hay in water (soaking) can increase the bacterial counts in hay, and the longer the soaked hay sits before being consumed, the greater the increase. Hay steaming does decrease the mould counts. Therefore, employing additional management strategies to reduce allergen exposure and using appropriate medical treatments recommended by a veterinarian are also critical when managing horses with respiratory conditions especially asthma. There is also now growing interest in complimentary therapy products such as Breathe and RespiraFix in the management of respiratory conditions including asthma. Overall, steaming hay for horses with respiratory allergies is more advantageous than soaking, due to the decrease in both dust and microbial contamination. Commercially available steamers are safe and easy to use following manufacturers' directions.  Continued page 9

es experiencing oxidative stress in their lungs. Curcuma Longa - helps the body rid the causative agents of respiratory infections due to its anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties. In trials it has shown reduction in airway constriction and hyper-sensitivity to histamine. Withania - helps to manage physical and mental health conditions, assists the immune system and reduction in cortisol levels as well as stress and

can assist in muscle building. Maritime Pine - assists in the reduction of allergies and asthma, helping to improve skin, vascular function, liver and the metabolism as well as helping with inflammation, immunity and lung disease. Chamomile - is a nervine relaxant, and is known for its anti-allergic, sedative, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Liquorice Root - anti-inflammatory, demulcent and expec-

Conclusion As with all things, it is a combination of factors to assist in the management of our horses: 1.Well-ventilated stables or barns 2.Try to limit dust and potential allergens in paddocks 3.Steaming hay for horses with respiratory allergies is more advantageous than soaking, due to the decrease in both dust and microbial contamination. 4.Feed naturally 5.In conjunction with your vet, choose human grade supplements to assist in the management of respiratory conditions. Mud Fever - what you need to know By SANDY ROGERS of Scopex Laboratories and Dr Jim Rawlinson BVMS MBA MRCVS of Nettex What is mud fever? Mud fever or pastern dermatitis is a condition that causes scabs, irritation and sores typically on the pasterns or heals. More severe cases can result in heat, swelling and lameness. Mud fever is typically seen in wet and muddy conditions. What causes mud fever? Mud fever is a combination of damage to the skin surface and bacterial infection. In healthy horses, numerous types of microorganisms live on the skin without causing any harm. However, when the skin is damaged, bacteria can enter and cause infection. The most common bacteria isolated is Dermatophilus congolensis, although other microorganisms can also contribute. What does mud fever look like? Signs range in severity. Starting with scabs, commonly on the pastern, they can extend upwards towards the cannons. In severe cases pus, crusting, swelling and heat can develop potentially causing lameness. What to do if you have mud fever? Removing the scabs is key. Dermatophilus congolensis can't survive in the presence of oxygen so removing scabs exposes the affected area, helping to control the infection. Removal can be difficult or painful, as scabs are often thick and crusty.

The following steps help to remove scabs as pain-ffree as possible Note: it may need to be repeated in severe cases

* Clip with fine clippers. * A softening cream like Nettex Muddy Marvel De-Scab softens scabs making removal easier. * Wash the legs with warm water and a diluted antibacterial wash. * Thoroughly dry each leg with a separate towel to avoid bacterial contamination. * Apply Nettex Muddy Marvel Disinfect to the affected areas and allow to dry. * If prescribed by your vet, antibiotic cream can be applied after scab removal.

* Finally, a barrier cream such as Nettex Muddy Marvel Barrier Cream can be applied. This contains moisturisers to support healthy skin and reduce cracking and drying. TIP: If wet conditions are forecasted, use a barrier cream such as Nettex Muddy Marvel Barrier Cream or a barrier spray, such as Nettex Muddy Marvel Seven Day Mud Away. Regional Challenges for Feeding & Nutrition BY LARISSSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1) Animal Nutritionist

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN C3 AND C4 PLANTS?

Australia is a vast country with climates ranging from cool temperate in the south, through temperate and arid regions, the subtropics and into tropical northern zones.

Australian horse owners face very different management challenges depending on the climatic zone they live in. The impact of climate on pastures, feed quality and availability across different regions has a large influence on what Australian horse owners need to feed to optimize horse health and nutrition. HIGH OXALATE PASTURES - TROPICAL CLIMATES AND COASTAL AREAS Graziers introduced many species of high producing C4 grasses into tropical Australia from Africa last century. Many of these grasses were very successful in Australian climates and have now become naturalized throughout tropical and subtropical zones. Some C4 species also grow alongside naturalized C3 grasses in temperate zones. Most of the introduced C4 pasture grasses contain high levels of oxalates which are a naturally occurring biomineral that help plants regulate calcium levels and photosynthesize efficiently. Many plants contain oxalates but only some contain the very high levels that can cause problems for horses. Species of high oxalate grasses that most commonly occur in horse paddocks in the northern half of Australia are Buffel Grass, Setaria, Green Panic, Humidicola, Para,

Page 12

Signal and Pangola grasses. Kikuyu is another high oxalate species which grows well in coastal areas from northern Australia right down the eastern coast and into north-eastern Tasmania. The problem with these grasses in horse pastures is that the oxalate molecule binds calcium, making it unavailable to the horse. Interestingly, oxalates do not cause problems for sheep and cattle because their rumen can metabolize oxalates into harmless products very early in the digestive tract. If not supplemented with adequate calcium, horses grazing high oxalate pastures become calcium deficient and draw on the calcium reserves in their bones to maintain critical blood calcium blood levels. This condition is called Big Head/Bran Disease, more accurately known as Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism (NSH) which is effectively osteoporosis in horses. Horses grazing high oxalate pastures need to be supplemented with extra calcium to ensure there is enough available calcium in their diet to meet their requirements. Both inorganic and organic (chelated) forms of calcium are effective provided that they are supplemented in adequate amounts. Since there are many variables to be considered in calculating supplementation needs, advice from a qualified nutritionist experienced in tropical equine nutrition is recommended. SWEET GRASSES AND LAMINITIS PRONE/INSULIN RESISTANT HORSES

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com

It's all about the way they photosynthesize - use the energy from sunlight to convert the carbon dioxide and water into energy for plant growth. The vast majority of plants on earth use C3 photosynthesis. * C3 plants store their energy as sugar (fructan) * C4 plants store starch rather than sugar. * C4 plants are higher in fibre. * C4 plants are more energy efficient and grow much faster. * C4 plants have a higher water use efficiency. * C3 plants perform best in cooler, moist conditions with moderate sunlight and tend to be temperate plants (ryegrass, clover, wheat, barley, oats). * C4 plants evolved in warm, strong sunlight areas of the tropics (sugarcane, corn, sorghum, Rhodes grass). Many of the high producing C3 grasses introduced last century from Europe, the UK and USA for temperate sheep and cattle production have succeeded so well in the Australian climate that they are now naturalized species. These grass species have been bred to produce rapid growth of high energy (calorie), high protein feed needed for milk and meat production. The carbohydrate (sugar and starch) levels of ryegrass and some other introduced grasses, particularly C3 species, are too high for horses who evolved to graze lower quality roughages. Horses rapidly gain weight on high carbohydrate pastures which puts them at risk of equine metabolic disease, insulin resistance and laminitis. Sudden changes in grass quality and availability especially during spring and autumn can disrupt the equine gut microbiome which causes diarrhea and may lead to colic and laminitis.  Continued page 13

The Horse Report

Horse friendly pastures and nutrition requirements  From page 12 When planting horse friendly pastures in temperate zones choose a mix of slower growing, higher fibre, lower nutrient varieties such as Cocksfoot, Browntop Bentgrass, Yorkshire Fog, Crested Dogtail Grass Prairie Grass and Australian native grasses Wallaby Grass, Native Wheatgrass, Native Bluegrass and Weeping Grass are amongst the best suited to grazing. Species for horse friendly pastures in tropical areas include Rhodes Grass (this is a high producing, low oxalate C4 grass) and native grasses such as Bluegrass, Native Wheatgrass, Mitchell Grass, Kangaroo and Wallaby Grass. Horses prone to laminitis will need careful management during spring and autumn. Restricted intake via use of grazing muzzles and removal from grass with or without limited turnout time are necessary management tools. Replace fresh grass with low calorie hay (which may be soaked to remove calories), minimize hard feeds to just enough to provide essential vitamins, minerals and prebiotics designed to improve insulin sensitivity. Consider the use of hindgut buffers and probiotic live yeast to help maintain a more stable hind gut pH. LACK OF PASTURE Most parts of Australia experience seasons where grass availability is inadequate to meet horse requirements. Whenever pasture levels are low or grasses are dry and stalky, horses need to be fed hay. Horses need a minimum of one percent of their body weight as dietary forage. The majority of horses the required amount of hay is closer to two percent of their body weight (i.e. a 500 kg horse needs 10 - 12 kg of hay per day when grass is not available, and a 250 kg pony needs 5 - 6 kg). The hay used to replace pasture intake should be a grass/meadow hay. Lucerne should not exceed more than 20 to 30 percent of forage intake. Horses reliant on hay or dry pasture for more than half of their forage intake should also be given additional vitamins and an Omega-3 fatty acid supplement to replace those levels lost from fresh pasture. Appropriate Omega-3 supplements include

such as organic selenium, organic chromium, vitamins C and E, carotenoids and enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) during very hot weather or heavy exercise is scientifically proven to reduce the risk of oxidative stress.

DHA/EPA algal meal, fish oil, freshly ground or whole linseeds, stabilized linseed oil or chia seeds. MYCOTOXINS Mycotoxin ingestion is a cause of horse health and behaviour problems during wet weather and when endophyte containing varieties of fescue and ryegrass are present. Paspalum is also a high-risk species for mycotoxins during flowering. Many horse pastures will contain levels of mycotoxins high enough to impact on horse health which are indetectable to humans. Use of a good quality, broad-spectrum toxin binder containing multiple binding agents is recommended during high humidity or whenever horses show signs of being mycotoxin affected. HOT SUMMERS, DEHYDRATION AND HEAT STRESS Keeping and riding horses through an Australian summer requires an understanding of how to minimize heat stress and manage electrolyte balance. Horses rely heavily on their ability to sweat to cool their bodies during exercise. Sweating is only effective when humidity is low and a breeze is present. Hot, humid and still conditions make it much harder for the body's core temperature to cool back down to a safe level. Strenuous exercise and hot environmental conditions are two major factors causing oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals (reactive oxygen species) outnumber the antioxidant levels in the body, causing cellular and muscle damage, fatigue and decreased performance. Supplementing with additional antioxidants

DAILY SALT REQUIREMENTS Horses require between 7 and 12 grams of plain salt per 100 kilograms of bodyweight every day. More may be needed for sweat replacement on very hot days and following heavy exercise. Since salt is usually added to pellets and grain mixes designed for horses, this salt must be counted in calculations of how much extra to add. Free access to a container of clean, loose salt rather than a salt block is also advisable because many horses will not lick a block for long enough to meet their salt requirements. SWEAT REPLACEMENT Sweating horses can lose as much as 10 to 15 litres of fluid per hour. Dehydration occurs if this liquid is not replaced. It is not as simple as just adding water. The fluid in animal's bodies contains various salts called electrolytes (sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium) which help manage the hydration of cells and blood volume. The water and electrolytes lost in sweat will be gradually replaced over the course of a few days rest as the horse drinks water and eats diet with correct mineral balance. However, a faster recovery is often desirable for horses who work every day, are living in hot and humid environments or are competing over a number of days. These horses will benefit from a well formulated commercial electrolyte supplement. It is important to feed just the right amount of electrolytes because giving too much or too little can actually increase dehydration. Always make fresh clean water available to a horse after sweating. Do not offer electrolyte-enhanced water without providing access to plain water. MINERAL SUPPLEMENTS Many horse owners recognise that horses grazing poor quality pasture or on poor soils need supplementation, but it is not well understood that even the best quality pasture does not give a horse the ideal balance of minerals.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, environmental management will also so assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

Why forage is important in the diet By FEEDXL EQUINE NUTRITION TEAM Forage is the single, most important component of your horse’s diet for a whole bunch of reasons. It is your horse’s biggest source of calories, protein and some vitamins and minerals. It keeps your horse’s gut full and less prone to colic. It encourages saliva production during chewing and keeps the stomach full to dramatically reduce the risk of gastric ulcers. It feeds your horse’s good bacteria which then produce vitamins and hormones that keep your horse calm, healthy and happy plus they keep the immune system functioning properly. It holds onto water in the gut and provides a rich source of electrolytes to keep your horse properly hydrated. And perhaps one of the most important functions of forage – it keeps your horse chewing, head down and content. So it’s really important to have enough forage in your horse’s diet and it’s also a wonderful idea to have a variety of forage in the diet.

HERE IS A LITTLE HEADS UP TO SAVE YOU GETTING CONFUSED If your horse is on free choice pasture or hay you will notice that as you add a new ingredient your horse’s pasture or free choice hay intake will go down as you ad other ingredients. For example if your horse’s free choice forage intake is 10 kg/day…

And then you add 0.5 kg/day of oats, free choice forage will go down to 9.5 kg/day…

DON’T JUST MEET THE MINIMUM FORAGE REQUIREMENT! The more forage you can get into your horse’s diet, the better. Pasture, hay, chaff, forage cubes or pellets, haylage is all considered forage. Forage can make up 100% of their diet. A HIGH FORAGE DIET IS BEST FOR GUT AND OVERALL HEALTH This high forage diet, especially if it contains a variety of forage, is the closest diet you can get to a horse’s natural diet and will be the best in terms of gut and overall health for them. If your horse’s energy is too low (less than 90% or your horse is currently losing weight on an all forage diet) then you will need to add some higher energy ingredients to the diet. But keep in mind that you still want to keep as much forage in the diet as you possibly can.

Some suggestions for higher energy ingredients include sugarbeet pulp, copra meal, lupins, lupin hulls, higher energy forages like alfalfa/lucerne, oils and if they are safe for your horse, oats or other cereals (like corn/maize or barley) as long as they are cooked. The trick is to add as little of these ingredients as possible to meet that digestible energy requirement so you keep as much of your forage in the diet as possible. So keep adding small amounts to the diet of your chosen high energy ingredients and keep checking your results in the FeedXL horse nutrition calculator to see when you have added enough energy.

WHY? Because your horse only has so much room in its gut for feed each day. So as you increase in this example, oats in the diet, your free choice forage intake is reduced proportionally. If you remember lots of forage plus a variety of forage your horse is going to be so far ahead in term of health and nutrition. Driving World Cup close finish for Boyd Exell By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA

After the closest fought FEI Driving World Cup™ Final for some years, Australian Boyd Exell has finished in second place - by only 0.83 seconds to Bram Chardon of the Netherlands. Going into the final competition in Bordeaux France, the question as to who would win remained more open than ever after the small margins between the drivers after the opening competition. In the first round, Boyd drove one of the best rounds of his season to go into the lead. Boyd was the final driver into the arena in the second round but knocked a cone and although he was 2.84 seconds faster than Bram, it wasn’t enough to make up for the four second penalty and he slid into second on 252.69 seconds overall. Boyd was gracious in defeat and credited his horses for their consistency during the series, which began with his victory in Lyon in France. “We put the pedal to the metal

and we nearly got the ball back,” Boyd said. “My team were super and I am really pleased with my horses.” It was the 10th time that the FEI Driving World Cup™ final has been held in Bordeaux since the series began in 2001. Bram won his first indoor championship here in 2019 and his next in Leipzig in 2022. The cat and mouse trading of titles between Boyd and Bram swung in the Dutchman’s favour this year.

Building a relationship with your new horse Due to my continuous travel, my horses don't have a lot of routine, and this has become their normal. When settling a new horse in, try to establish some routines that they can rely on - a similar feed time each day, a routine when getting ready for a training session, even training in the same area for days or weeks.

By TANJA KRAUS Getting a new horse is an exciting time. We have spent time on the search for our 'dream horse' and we have found 'the one' that has pulled on our heartstrings enough to make us bring them home. We know exactly what is going on, but this horse has just been taken from everything that he knows, everyone that he knows, and the herd that he belongs in. How do we build his trust and encourage him to settle into his new home? Spend time getting to know each other. Firstly, we need to spend time getting to know the horse. You may have spent some time with him before you purchased, but now he is yours, and its vital to invest in some quality time. It is important to have a good combination of passive time, simply grooming him or hand walking and light training sessions. I would recommend that you spend several sessions doing

Spend time getting to know your horse ground exercises before considering riding. Keeping initial sessions together positive will help the horse see you as someone he enjoys being around. Spending time working on basic things will help you get to know how the horse thinks, his personality and if he is an immediately willing partner. Set the ground rules Even though we are keeping initial sessions light and positive, it is imperative to set the ground rules of the relationship early. Having relaxed rules at the start,

to try and make the horse 'like you' will backfire and cause the horse to lose respect and trust. Horses need leadership to feel secure, so set your ground rules from the start - like no rubbing on me, no grazing while online, respect my personal space, how you want him to lead. Be consistent Once you have set your groundrules, it is important that you stick to them. It is likely that your new horse is going to try to test boundaries every now and then, and if you waiver on your rules, you will encourage him to keep testing. Be consistent both in your expectations, and your communication techniques. You must ask him the same way each time, so he learns your language - if you usually ask a horse to pick its foot up by tapping the fetlock, then do this every time. If you usually ask a horse to lead by driving it forward, then do this every time. Confidence is a result of knowing what to expect - allow the horse to become confident in you by asking the same way, everytime. Have routine Routines are something that horses build confidence in.

Establish some normalcy Anything that you can keep the same as the previous home, even for a short time is going to help them settle - the same type of feed, being rugged or not rugged. Maybe the previous owner fed treats and you don't intend to - but in the early days this could be something that may bring some comfort. Patience. Always keep in mind that you have the advantage of knowing exactly what is going on, and the horse really doesn't. You are going to ask him to do things in a different way from the previous owners, you look, smell and feel different, and all of his surroundings are unfamiliar. Be patient when asking him to do things, he may not understand what you are asking. Build trust over time Don't overwhelm the relationship by going big - limit outings and external stimulation until the horse has built some trust in you, and sees you as someone he can rely on. Remember that trust is built over years and experiences. I know if I sold Boogie that I would be saying how great she is at everything, and how she can handle so much, but I really don't know if she could with a different owner. I think as humans we underestimate the value of the relationship and how much comfort and leadership the horse gets from us.

Relaxation is key to growth and development By ELEANOR OSBORNE and ANGIE WENTRUP Relaxation has become something of a buzz word in recent times, but there is relaxation and then there is relaxation 'One Horse Life' style. Conscious muscle relaxation has been understood by human athletes at elite level for many years and for the best part of two decades the founders of One Horse Life, Anna and Pawel Marciniak, have been translating this understanding into unique equestrian training methods in order to elevate the world of horse sports performance and also tackle health and horse well being issues head on. Training through conscious muscle relaxation is where therapy and performance come together for the benefit of the horse. It is profound, it is powerful, it eliminates many common health and behavioural issues, unlocking partnership, possibility and athletic potential, all the while being achievable for amateurs as well as professionals. The best part is once it's established, it is a technique that belongs to the horse independent of their trainer and environment. It is changing the game in how we prepare, train and look after our equine partners. ONE HORSE LIFE SIGNATURE METHODS

internal tensions of the horse. * Residual Tension Release Therapy (RTRT) is a revolutionary development in conscious relaxation which reinstates the bit as a tool for pure relaxation. It can be performed from the ground, via the long reins and under saddle, and is equally suitable for bitless enthusiasts and non riders. * Anna’s Riding Method (ARM) promotes sophisticated, elegant riding through correct utilisation of body awareness and kinetic chains. Riders learn how to stabilise their seat to truly harmonise with their horse's movement. A CLOSER LOOK AT EACH METHOD AND WHAT THEY OFFER THE HORSE:

* Optimal Performance Program (OPP) is the groundwork training program offered by One Horse Life, designed to teach conscious relaxation to horses. It is more than just mere muscle relaxation during activity, it encompasses relaxation of the entire body inside and out. * Relax That Stomach (RTS) technique is the heart of the full OPP program and has the ability to address and heal deeply held

2nd January 2024

Optimal Performance Program The OPP method is built of eight relaxation techniques that teach horses how to consciously recognise, and manage, common tension patterns that arise in their body. Through utilising these techniques, the horse is able to turn what was once tension patterns into moments of deepened relaxation opening the gateways to

potential and possibility. This shift is crucial for maintaining both the horse and the rider's health and safety, and to develop athletic performance without compromising the horse's wellbeing. Tension in horses is often a physical and emotional response to the most common tension triggers for horses such as elevated heart rate, anticipation, restrictions of movement, disturbed breathing patterns (due to panic and anxiety) just to name a few. Optimal Performance Program is an all encompassing training where the horse learns to consciously relax directly before the activity and maintain or deepen their relaxed state during and after each phase of performance. Importantly, once the horse knows the Optimal Performance Program they own it. They use it consistently, not just during training but also downtime on the paddock, within their herd dynamics, sharing feed times and so on. It has been described by many as the 'missing link' in their horseman-ship journey and is available to all. Every horse - from the young to the old, from mares to stallions,

and from performance horses to equine companions - deserves to learn how to relax and to choose this skill when the need arises. Relax That Stomach Relax That Stomach is the cornerstone technique that kick starts the full OPP training. This is the pivotal foundation technique for all horses as it deals with the major tension networks held around anticipation. If you consider the sheer size of the digestive tract of the horse in its entirety, you can start to envisage how the impact of deeply held tensions of the smooth muscles and internal structures can play out and disrupt the function of multiple body systems. Ulcers, colic, aggression at feed time are obvious signs of stomach tension, but the list is vast and also includes itchy skin through to behavioural and performance issues eg separation anxiety. This technique is vital for addressing these persistent tensions and forms the major healing and rehab structure of the One Horse Life methodology hence why it is given its own focus  Continued page 31

Relaxation is key to growth and development  From page 30 Residual Tension Release Therapy RTRT provides a continuation under the banner of conscious muscle relaxation training however, this technique differs in that it is provided to the horse via the bit and through the connection to the trainer's own body. This method is unlike anything you or your horse will have experienced before. It is a great tool for introducing the bit to young horses, as well as rehabbing bit trauma for others and it literally purifies the gaits from residual tension. It is done at standstill initially, then can be moved to a long rein version and ultimately be incorporated into ridden work under saddle. Anna's Riding Method Anna's Riding Method is the One Horse Life riding technique that combines the best of two worlds: Feel and Physics. This method gives understanding to the movement of the horse at the level of physics and biomechanics, giving you the ability to harmonise both to create lightness, beauty and grace at a level suitable for performance. ARM

Helping the horse to relax will provide a much more rewarding experience for both horse and rider.

focuses on enhancing the horse's understanding and balance, teaching you how to sit and ride the movement, not fighting it or struggling because of it. It is an easy, accessible yet incredibly deep riding system that works and will transform your ride. So how do you get involved? One Horse Life official headquarters resides in the Netherlands and has accredited professionals throughout Europe teaching their methodology. Eleanor Osborne of Highborne Equestrian and Angie Wentrup of Thrive & Shine Equine, are

the only professionals accredited to teach this work here in Australia. They have combined their years of competitive and classical training across the dressage and eventing disciplines, with time committed to studying and training under Anna and Pawel Marciniak, to bring this incredible work to Australia. One Horse Life Introductory Seminars are being delivered in person in Brisbane and are available through live online participation throughout Australia. Participants gain the foundational skill sets to get started on their own journey with conscious

muscle relaxation and experience profound change in themselves and their horses. Routine clinics, private private lessons and in house training are also available to support students as they progress. Australia’s Kate Kyros - success in the USA By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Equestrian Australia (EA) caught up with Kate last year following her wins at the Australian Youth Dressage Championships. It was clear then that Kate and her mother, Heather, had set some goals and mapped out a plan. Kate and her team are currently in Wellington, Florida campaigning her two stallions. Kate shared some of her insights with EA on being overseas. “Wellington is known as the ‘Winter Equestrian Capital of the World’. During the first three months of each year, hundreds of equestrians and their horses come from around the globe to participate in the international competitions for jumping, polo and Dressage which take place each weekend throughout the season. For Dressage, a CDI is held every other weekend at the Global Dressage Grounds in the heart of Wellington, with the off-weekends seeing Dressage CDIs held at other venues nearby. Three years ago, Dressage rider and trainer Bennet Conn suggested that a season competing in Wellington would be a valuable experience for me. In 2023, I took over the ride on my current horses Chemistry (Tommy) and Intro K (Intro). We had some wonderful success in Australia in the CDI U25 Grand Prix and Young Rider classes and as our scores improved, we began to consider that the timing may be right for a trip to Florida. We were fortunate to be offered stables with Australian showjumper Ben Meredith and Dressage rider Caroline Roffman. Through Australian Dressage rider Jayden Brown, we connected with Petra Hofmann who helped us organise accommodation and my coach Jenny Gehrke, arranged for us to meet Lillie Connelly who we were delighted to bring over to groom for me.

Australia’s Kate Kyros and Chemistry. Susan J Stickle, Dressage Photos

The horses flew with IRT who are experts in travelling Australia’s horses and also a longtime supporter of the sport. It really did take a village. As a young rider, my goals are to use every opportunity to learn as much as possible. The great thing about being based in Wellington is the number of CDIs that I can attend, these competitions are all in close proximity and held every weekend. I am intending to compete in as many as I can while I’m here. The barn where we are based is only four minutes drive from the show, so competing regularly is easy. It was certainly a novelty to warm up and plait for a CDI at home - on trot up day. My coach Jenny Gehrke is here for a month and has supported me through the first two CDIs in January so far. I have also enjoyed lessons with Bennet Conn who travels to Florida each month

throughout the season. German trainer Petra Hoffman is also a wonderful support and I look forward to her collaboration as the season progresses. From a social perspective Wellington is absolutely bursting with horse enthusiasts and there is no shortage of equestrian events to attend. I am thoroughly enjoying being able to go everywhere in my jodhpurs, this is what everyone wears - particularly to the supermarket. There are a surprising number of Australians based here and they have certainly made us feel welcome. We have appreciated their friendship, advice and support. Thanks must go to my wonderful stallions Chemistry and Intro K. They flew 40 hours around the globe to get here and have not missed a beat. It is as if they have lived in Florida forever. We have been fortunate to easily replicate the care program we had at home in the horses’ new stable. They do regular aqua treadmill sessions, pulse therapy, daily walker sessions and train in a beautiful, covered arena with an exceptional fibre surface and this training regime all helps to keep them happy and in top shape. I have won a number of classes and hearing the Australian anthem ringing out across the stadium is beyond amazing and very emotional. Recently the Australian selectors nominated Chemistry and I to ride for Australia in the U25 CDIO Nations Cup and when my first ever official Australian Equestrian Team uniform arrived in the post, it feels like my dreams are coming true and right now I’m not sure life can get much better than this. The support I have had from my family has been amazing, and it is so great to share this big adventure with my mum, who is equally passionate about the horses and this journey. I also acknowledge the role of the Australian peak body Equestrian Australia, without this organisation, international competition is not possible. I thank EA for the opportunity to share some of my experiences.”

AIS camp prepares national Paralympians By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Equestrian Australia's High Performance Para Squad off-horse training was held at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra recently and was a valuable opportunity for Para athletes to get together for some training and team building activities. The camp brought together the National Para-Dressage Squad for training sessions, education workshops and interactive development activities. From all accounts this was a wonderful experience for the athletes, who as well as finding out more about the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, were able to learn from Paralympians in other disciplines as well as from professionals in this field. Nick Hunter, Equestrian Australia's ParaEquestrian High Performance Lead said the AIS camp was an excellent opportunity for

the National Squad to get together to focus on Paris Paralympic Games preparation away from the competition arena. “This included great work in developing the

values and standards that the athletes will carry forward through the Games nomination process and, eventually, to the Paralympic Team,” Nick said.

The Horse Report Melbourne’s 1956 Olympic saw the birth of the EFA By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA In the early 1950s, a group of visionary Australian equestrians dared to dream big and prepare a team to take part in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Olympic entries had to come from a national administration and this prompted the formation of the Equestrian Federation of Australia, mostly known by the acronym EFA. Equestrian administrations were already established on a state-by-state basis and the national body was formed around 1951/52 and was based in South Australia. The EFA later became Equestrian Australia, EA, and the national office moved from SA to NSW around 2010. The sole purpose of a national EFA was to meet the Olympic Committee requirement for entries to come through the national sporting body. Compliance with IOC rules allowed Australia to qualify and field an equestrian team to take part in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. A strong driving force of visionaries worked together to establish the national federation and founding fathers of the EFA included many state-based riders, officials and supporters. History books acknowledge the significant contribution of Samuel Hordern, then President of the NSW EFA, Jim Barnes, who was on the committee of the NSW EFA along with (Sir) Alec Creswick and Tom Luxton who represented the Victorian EFA.

Page 36

The National (peak body) structure of EA was, and still is, a necessary part of the administrative structure that is needed for Australia to select individual riders and teams to Olympics, World Championships and other international events that are affiliated with the FEI. Ironically, Australia’s strict quarantine regulations prevented the equestrian events being held on Australian shores, accordingly, these classes were conducted at specialist facilities in Stockholm, Sweden. Such was the enthusiasm of the forefathers of Australia’s Olympic equestrians that even the prospect of a six-week boat trip to transfer the horses from Australia to the other side of the world did not deter their resolve to have an Aussie team etch their names into Olympic history books. Australia has since earned a reputation as a successful equestrian nation and this respect follows on from the ground breaking performances of the talented men and horses who

travelled to Stockholm and made history, back in 1956. The riders selected for Australia’s inaugural Eventing team were Brian Crago, Ernie Barker and Wyatt (Bunty) Thompson and David Wood, who was listed as team captain and reserve rider. Albert (Bert) Jacobs had been based in Europe for12 months leading up to the Games, he competed in the Showjumping and carried the Australian flag at the opening ceremony. Against all odds, the Australian Eventing Team not only qualified to represent their country, but surprised the world by finishing just outside the medals in fourth place. Sydney’s Daily Telegraph newspaper reported at the time: “For a country which never before competed in Olympic Equestrian events, Australia’s effort was remarkable. It will enhance Australia’s reputation for horsemanship throughout the world.”

The King of the Coast Crowned Again Supplied by MAGIC MILLIONS After wins in the 2022 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) and the 2023 Magic Millions Snippets, the son of I Am Invincible returned to the Gold Coast as one the shortest-priced favourites to ever run on raceday. And while he settled midfield and conceded his rivals several lengths at the 600m, the gelding never looked in danger of defeat as jockey James McDonald allowed him to build through his gears and build momentum. King of Sparta thundered to the lead at the 200m and raced away from his rivals, including minor placegetters Petronius and Rose Quartz. Trainer Paul Snowden said King of Sparta continues to improve each season and he doesn't see why the galloper cannot return for another tilt at the Magic Millions raceday in 2025. "It's always a great day to be involved in," Snowden said. "We were always going to be back here and I said to JMac that the more relaxed he is, the better his turn of foot is and to trust the horse's ability to sprint better than what the others can. "He's probably not finished yet because I've got to say that in the last 12 months, he's the best that he's ever been. "He's raced at a really high level and he continues to do so. "He's getting on in years but he's still got a lot of really good racing ahead of him." China Horse Club, Newgate Bloodstock and Starlight Racing secured King of Sparta for $700,000 out of the Yarraman

King of Sparta confirmed his status as the king of the Gold Coast with a third consecutive win on Magic Millions Raceday, this time taking the $1 million It's Live in Queensland! Magic Millions Snippets (1200m) in devastating style.

Park Stud draft at the 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. The win was the seventh of his career and took his career earnings beyond $3.2 million. It was a 14th Magic Millions feature win for McDonald, who hailed the performance as the best of King of Sparta's career. "Eliza from Silverdale Farm said

that we might have to buy him some white shoes and some tattoos because he loves the Gold Coast that much," McDonald said. "He's done a marvellous job, he's such a good horse and he's getting better. "I think that performance was his best one." Six yearlings by I Am Invincible

have sold for $1 million or more at this year's Gold Coast Yearling Sale, including Lot 900, a colt out of Group 2 winner Madam Rouge that was purchased for $1.7 million. Eggsy has spent a limited amount of time in professional training and, while he is quiet, he is still green. He has three comfortable paces and a lovely sitting trot which will make him an excellent rider mount. When in a no-pressure environment Eggsy will happily carry riders of any confidence level but for him to excel in an arena or the show ring he will need a competent set of hands to further his education. He is a real dude and enjoys nothing more than being up at the farm, riding trails, going bareback and rounding up the cattle. He is not matey with other horses and fits into a small herd well or happy to be paddocked by himself. Not fazed by much and super chill Eggsy has a laid-back personality and ready for someone to take him to the next level. Contact: Sarah Pihan Ph: 0403 138 887

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
