The Horse Report

Ban of trimming horse sensory hairs & whiskers By EQUESTRIAN QUEENSLAND Vibrissae, or sensory hairs or whiskers, are the long stiff hairs growing on the chin, mouth and around the eyes and are used as organs of touch by the horse. In August, the Equestrian Australia Board voted to implement the FEI rule to ban the trimming of horse sensory hairs across all EA National Disciplines in the interests of horse welfare. A transition period began from August 2021 and the rule will come into full effect on 1 January 2022. No elimination or penalty will be incurred during the transition period. But as of 1 January 2022, horses will not be permitted to compete: i) if the Horse's sensory hairs have been clipped and/or shaven or in any other way removed unless individual

sensory hairs have been removed by a veterinarian to prevent pain or discomfort for the horse. areas of hair that must be clipped, shaven or removed to allow veterinary treatment are exempt from this rule.

REMINDER As of 1 January 2022, horses will not be permitted to compete in EA National Disciplines if their whiskers have been removed

The Horse Report

How does my horse get Strangles? By ZOETIS AUSTRALIA What is strangles? Strangles is a highly contagious respiratory disease of horses that is caused by the bacteria Streptococcus equi subspecies equi (commonly referred to as ‘Strep equi’). The disease is highly infectious and can easily and rapidly spread from horse to horse The Strangles bacteria is spread by direct contact with the horse's nasal discharge, pus from discharging abscesses, or even the infected horse coughing on another horse. Bacteria can also spread to an uninfected horse via contaminated objects such as people's hands, clothing or even equipment such as halters, water buckets and feed bins. Common clinical signs of Strangles may include: nasal discharge, fever, difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite, depression, coughing and laboured breathing due to enlarged lymph nodes. These distressing clinical signs can persist for days or weeks. Most horses recover, but they may need to be isolated for six to eight weeks to avoid infecting other horses. Boosters every six months are recommended for horses at high risk. Your foal can be given Equivac® S or Equivac® 2in1 vaccination from three months of age. Initially, it is given as three doses no less than two weeks apart, followed by annual

Common clinical signs of Strangles may include: nasal discharge boosters to maintain immunity. Howdoes my horse get Strangles? Strangles is seen more commonly in younger horses, generally less than five years old, particularly in environments where there are a lot of horses mingling together, such as weaning time, horse sales, or at breaking-in establishments. Young horses typically have lower levels of immunity to the Strangles bacterium than

older horses, and when new horses are mixed together, the stress levels increase in these young horses, further decreasing the strength of their immune system and making them more susceptible to disease. The more horses are allowed to intermingle with other horses, the more risk there is that one will introduce the disease. Continued page 7

Vaccination provides protection against Strangles From page 6 My horses don’t leave my property - do they still have to get vaccinated? Yes, horses may still be vulnerable to infection and can contract Strangles without even leaving your property. Infection is caused by either inhaling or ingesting the S equi bacteria that they pick up from other infected horses, or from handlers, contaminated yards, water troughs, and equipment such as leads, head collars, buckets etc. – all items that are found at home. Do they really have to be vaccinated every six to 12 months? Yearly boosters are required to maintain an adequate level of immunity, however, increased protection against Strangles may be obtained by giving booster doses more frequently, for example every six months. It is the recommendation of the Equine Infectious Diseases Advisory Board that all horses receiving Strangles vaccine receive boosters every six months

Strangles in horses Symptoms * Nasal discharge * Decreased appetite * Increase in temperature * Swelling of lymph nodes * Coughing and laboured breathing * Pus secreted from discharging abscesses

Why is Strangles vaccine different to a human vaccines which last a lifetime? All vaccines are not the same. The period of protection and degree of protection afforded by a vaccine is unique to each vaccine. With respect to Strangles, even natural infection with strangles does not provide lifetime protection against future infections, so it is unrealistic to expect a vaccine to provide superior protection. With human vaccination, most of the diseases in question are diseases of childhood, and there is also a heavy reliance on ‘herd immunity’ where diseases are kept in check by the sheer numbers of people being vaccinated during the most susceptible phases of life. It is worth noting that of recent times we have seen re-emergence of some human diseases where vaccination rates have reduced. Less than 15% of horses in Australia are vaccinated, so we see very little benefit from herd immunity in the equine world. Visit www.health4horses.com.au for more information on Strangles

The Horse Report

Keeping your horse healthy during transport By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic Education of the horse and preparation of the horse's gut, immune system and the transport vehicle are the keys to successful short and long-term transportation. Even short periods of transportation can be stressful to horses and cause detrimental changes to the microbial population in the horse's gut which can cause loss of appetite, undesirable behaviour, diarrhea, colic and gastric ulcers. On longer trips, a combination of stress and respiratory challenges may lead to travel sickness (Pleuropneumonia). Tips to prepare for transport In the week leading up to the journey: Ensure your horses are calm and confident when loading and travelling in a horse float or truck. Check that the float or truck has adequate ventilation and does not accumulate exhaust fumes. For long journeys, plan your 4 hourly rest stops at safe locations. If your horse is fussy about drinking 'strange' water, teach him or her to accept water flavoured with weak molasses, apple juice or cordial. Introduce a source of live yeast probiotics every day from 3-5 days prior to travel, even for short journeys. Consider beginning preventative ulcer medications (from your vet) &/or a proven nutraceutical to aid in the prevention of gastric ulcers. Pack spare feeds and hay to allow time to transition onto newly purchased feeds if the horse will be away for an extended period. Ensure the regular diet contains adequate levels of plain salt (at least 7g/day salt per 100 kg horse bodyweight) to optimize hydration and electrolyte balance prior to travel. Ensure the regular diet contains adequate levels of antioxidants including vitamin E and selenium. A concentrated antioxidant supplement can be used to top up levels during transport and following heavy work

Preparation is the key to ensuring the safe transport of horses. and competition. The day of transport Arriving safely and on-time at your destination relies on your ability to minimize both anxiety and physiological stress to support the horse's gut, airways and immune system and minimize the risk of injury and misbehaviour. Follow these guidelines to help your horse arrive at the destination in a healthier state and ready to perform to his or her potential. Feed lucerne hay 20 minutes prior to loading. Preferably feed it steamed or soaked at ground level to stimulate extra chewing to create saliva to buffer stomach acid. Aim to feed around 500g of hay per 150kg bodyweight. Allow the horse to lower the head to clear airways during extended journeys. If feeding hay in the float or truck, steam or soak it and give below head height to reduce airway contamination. On the day of and the day after transport,

add a concentrated source of B-group vitamins, especially if your horse loses appetite. Take regular breaks (preferably at least 20 minutes every 4 hours). Provide fresh water at every rest stop (you may need a 'flavour' or bring water from home until your horse adapts to the taste of 'new' water). Provide food at ground level and encourage grazing to allow mucous to clear the airways at every rest stop. Ensure horses have access to long stem roughage at least every 2-4 hours for gut health and to reduce the risk of gastric ulcers. Provide salt and/or a commercial electrolyte to replace electrolytes lost through sweat. Give additional antioxidants with a concentrated supplement containing vitamins C, E and organic selenium to boost the immune system and prevent tissue damage caused by oxidative stress. Reducing risks of transporting horses From page 10 Top tips for recovery after horse transport There is always a real risk of a horse developing travel sickness (Pleuropneumonia), especially following a lengthy journey. Travel sickness is caused by a bacterial infection of the lungs and chest cavity that occurs when the normal bacteria of the upper respiratory tract enter the lower airways, causing infection. Many horses sweat excessively during transport due to heat inside the float or truck and/or anxiety. It is important to replace lost electrolytes quickly to facilitate faster recovery. Gut disturbance and loss of appetite are also common following transport due to elevated stress levels and a subsequent change in the gut microbiome. This needs to be managed quickly to prevent weight loss, colic and gastric ulcers. You can reduce the risk of transport negatively impacting on your horse's health and behaviour by: Replacing electrolytes lost during the journey with a commercial electrolyte designed to replace the minerals lost via sweat. Continuing with antioxidant and probiotic supplementation for 3 - 14 days after transport. This aids muscle recovery and boosts gut health and immunity following transport.

Simple measures taken prior to transporting your horse can reduce health risks.

If your horse has reduced appetite following the journey, add B-group vitamins and probiotics. Including a biscuit or two of lucerne hay in the diet each day to reduce risk of gastric ulcers. For ulcer-prone horses, consider using veterinary prescribed medications and/or proven nutraceuticals for additional peace of mind. Allowing your horse at least 2-3 days to recover from a long journey before com-

mencing strenuous exercise or other stressful activity. Monitoring and record your horse's temperature twice daily for a week following prolonged transport. Watching your horse's appetite and demeanour for 3-5 days after transport. Always seek veterinary assistance if your horse has an elevated temperature, appears lethargic, loses appetite, has diarrhea, nasal discharge, persistent cough, founder or colic.

When do you know your horse old? By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip. Nut. Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist Just like people, horses age in different ways and age sometimes is not the only reason why a horse is feeling old or lacking energy. Workload and stress can age horses just like people. It can also have a major impact on Oxidative Stress, Phase 1 & 2 Detox and can certainly have an influence on inflammation. It is essential to ensure that your older horse has the correct daily nutrient intake to manage is health on a long-term basis. Finding the right balance is important and this is determined by the individual requirements of each horse. Horses are rated as middle aged from the age of 13 years and most horses, like people are in the prime of their life at this age. We really must consider the consequences if our horses are not as healthy as they could be. Not being fully fit, having some degenerative joint changes, hard work, stress, and diet will play a huge role in management. Just because a horse is older does not necessarily mean he requires a special diet; aging is not a disease; it is a normal process. However, many older horses with individual physical or nutritional needs might benefit from being fed a specific diet or feed modification(s) to maintain good health and body condition. Routine examinations, vaccination, deworming, dental care, and farrier visits are integral parts of horse ownership and can potentially minimize the development of feeding-related issues as horse’s age. We now have a generation of horses that received this type of management on a regular basis and more horses are living and working until they are in their late 20s, 30s, and beyond. A 15-year-old horse might have physical problems due to age (tooth loss, arthritis, metabolic problems) and require a special diet, but you might have a 25-year-old horse that needs no special nutritional care whatsoever, it is simply down to each horses genetic makeup and how their health has been managed. All required nutrients must be always provided at the correct levels to maintain normal body function and health. Naturally the optimum amount of any single nutrient will depend on the individual requirements this will vary depending on the attribute of each horse, genetic predisposition, temperament, environmental situations, stress, infection and even pregnant mares. More recent studies have provided practitioners, especially nutritionists with further tools to assist in the treatment of various conditions and diseases, providing the correct levels are used for the right situation and that there is no compromising of the health and wellbeing of the horse. This is certainly the case with any nutrients being used to assist with diseases, nutritionally related diseases or conditions etc. There may be certain individuals who Page 12

Consider the consequences if our horses are not as healthy as they could be. require higher levels of nutrients than others and there are other ways of providing more accurate testing being developed including Gene testing. Using amino acids with other nutrients is another way of assisting with a particular need of the animal, once this has been established. We must also remind ourselves that whilst there is a division of nutrients into categories, such as vitamins, amino acids, minerals etc. there is a very long sequence of activity involving these nutrients and that this sequence may break down or become ineffective. This means that nutrients may then not be available at optimum levels. What may be normal requirements for one horse of amino acids may be bordering on deficient for another. This is where ROA’s (recommended optimal allowances) are becoming of high importance. The bioavailability of the nutrient, the way it is transported, absorbed and utilized at the cellular level are all aspects that must be contemplated if there is a deficiency assumed.

I highly recommend for older horses using a preventative measure such as a joint product, but also look at a natural daily formula to support his/her health. A good diet will consist of plenty of roughage including pasture, hays, grains and oils if required (flax seed being the preferred oil). Perhaps some extra support with increasing weight may be necessary, I recommend the EquiSoy. Feeds such as Harry’s Choice would also be ideal in my opinion as these feeds are steamed and compressed, but are a fibre based feed and a beautifully synergistic feed unlike any other. Why do I like these feeds so much? Because they encourage normal chewing and digestion, that is something I get excited about. Remember if your horse is an older horse and working four to five times a week there is great demand mentally and physically. Banana feeds breaks new ground in horse health Banana Feeds Australia B-Complete is made from 100% whole green dried bananas and includes the skins, the pulp, the stems and even the flower ends, all full of nutritious and beneficial vitamins and compounds. Most of the beneficial polyphenols, flavonoids are located in the peel, which is why they are an important part of BComplete. There are no other additives in Banana Feeds B-Complete products other than whole dried green bananas which have been processed and milled into a muesli consistency. B-Complete is a healthy addition to any horse's diet, with a key focus on gut health. The antioxidants, the anti-ulcergenic properties are demonstrating huge benefits, and making for happier, healthier horses. Banana Feeds Australia has undertaken a lot of research with laboratories and researchers regarding the use of dried green bananas as a supplement for horses. It is such a new concept that it has never been done before. They have been working alongside the South Australian Research and Development Institution, and the Vet School at Roseworthy campus for University of Adelaide. Initially they conducted a worldwide academic literacy search, which turned up very little. They found papers on other species, so they had to start from scratch. A lot of analytical work has been completed, lots of in-field trials conducted, and further extensive trials have now commenced, against omeprazole for management of ulcers. There is evidence in overseas research that

have indicated banana and their skins are getting results equivalent to ulcer drugs. Green bananas contain high levels of antioxidants and other bioactive compounds that may confer a variety of health benefits. In particular, unripe bananas and green banana supplements have been found to be beneficial for gastrointestinal health in humans and have been shown to have antiulcerogenic properties in rodent models. In horses they are looking at the ulcers in the acid secreting areas of the stomach, which in horses are known as glandular ulcers, found in the lower part of the stomach. In the past, these ulcers have been very difficult to near impossible to heal, and the work Banana Feeds Australia is doing is to bring a new product to market that can improve this

terrible condition. Approximately 60-100% of strenuously exercising horses are affected by equine gastric ulceration syndrome (EGUS) and a natural product that could help prevent this condition would be extremely beneficial. Banana Feeds Australia have designed and commenced a trial with researchers at the University of Adelaide to determine the effects of feeding a dried green banana supplement on gastrointestinal health and specifically its use as an ulcer preventative. The recommended daily intake for a 14.2hh15hh horse (approx. 500kg) is 100g per day. B-Complete is 100% natural so you adjust to best meet your animal’s needs, without concern. Understanding Sacro-Iliac Disease in horses By Dr MATT MACKEE ( The Rivers Equine Vets ) The Sacro-iliac joint (a.k.a. SIJ) is a highly complex joint connecting the pelvis to the spine. Unlike other typical joints the SIJ is not a synovial joint. The joint is bound via a ligamentous structures known as the sacro-iliac ligaments and like most soft tissue structures can become damaged if overstrained. Horses with SIJ disease will commonly present with an altered hind limb gait and poor performance in their equine discipline. Anatomy The anatomy of the pelvis and Sacro-iliac joint is highly complex as previously mentioned. The anatomy of the pelvis is comprised of three irregular flat bones - the ilium, ichium and pubis. The sacrum is a section of the spine comprising of five fused vertebrae and as previously mentioned is connected to the pelvis via broad ligamentous attachments (dorsal, ventral and interosseous).

Sacroiliac joints The SIJ primary function is to propel the hindlimbs forward when in motion. SIJ associated pain can be either from ligamentous inflammation or damage. Clinical signs Clinical signs of SIJ pain are

often hard to pick-up on. They are often exacerbated when ridden under saddle, the most common complaint is poor performance. Other clinical signs/ complaints include reduced forward propulsion of the hind limb when in

motion, "bunny hop" canter, resistance to flexion (often seen when the farrier is extending the leg behind the horse), stiff through the back, difficulty changing lead and more. Continued page 17

Diagnosing and treating Sacro-Iliac Disease From page 16 Diagnosis Due to the vast muscle mass surrounding the pelvis within the hindquarters achieving a definitive diagnosis is often limited with ultrasonography and radiography alone. A thorough physical examination by your veterinarian to rule out other conditions causing the presenting signs is required. Diagnostic analgesia and scintigraphy are the most effective diagnostic tools in the diagnosis of SIJ disease. Thermography can also reveal cold spots in areas of ligamentous injury. Treatment Following diagnosis of SIJ disease there is a multi-faceted approach to the treatment/ rehabilitation if SIJ disease in your horse: - Intra-articular medications - medications such as steroids (triamcinolone) and hyaluronic acid help to reduce inflammation within the SIJ and associated ligaments - Physiotherapy & rehabilitation - the introduction of various exercises and stretches to strengthen the musculature in the hind-quarters and core abdominal muscles to aid in the stabilisation of the SIJ - Systemic medications such as phenylbutazone, flunixin, pentosan polysulphate, 4cyte - Non-invasive therapies such as laser therapy, pulsed electromagnetic therapy, shockwave therapy and more. SIJ disease is a commonly presented condition with subtle and often difficult to pin

point presenting signs. It is more prevalent amongst the heavy type sports horse and more prevalent in high-risk sports. Diagnosis is very difficult to achieve using routine diagnostic tools accessible in the

field. A controlled rehabilitation program amongst other therapies is key to a good return to the previous performance level For further information contact The Rivers Equine Vets in Murwillumbah Email admin@theriversequinevets.com.au

Understanding what all horses need to eat? By STEVE HURLEY Horses are herbivorous animals, from the Perissodactyl order of mammals, and can grow into big strong animals with a simple diet. They love to forage and prefer to eat grass as a natural source of nutrition in small amounts steadily throughout the day. Horses are vegans and that is why TuffRock only makes vegan products, like vegan people they can eat a variety of foods and therein lies the challenge. There are so many feeds, supplement, hay and chaff choices are available we are often asked what is the best diet or how do you decide what your horse needs? You can ask your local produce, feed company or veterinarian, always they will listen. The research for the ultimate diet continues all over the world and new products come out all the time, that is why TuffRock supplements are complements to all diets, however there is one answer if you think laterally, all horses need water to eat!! Clean water should be always an everyday priority and available to drink when horses are thirsty. Their other five basics need to eat also include carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals however it is the ratio of each input that is the hardest question. I have asked this question of many experts and back in the day famously included former President of American Judge Coaches, Dale T Barnett, then Murray State University KY Equine Co-Ordinator, I met up with when he was judging Paint Horse Nationals, sponsored by TuffRock in Dubbo 2006. We talked deeply about issues such as Fescue

Page 18

There are five basic nutritional needs which horse all need. Toxicosis that led us to develop TuffRock GI and also about the five basic horse nutritional needs that led us to make TuffRock EJF the most affordable Everyday Equine Joint Formula. Dale and our consultant nutritionists at the time advised TuffRock EJF must be simple and look to make from our volcanic Tuff Conditioner Minerals Plus gut health action for collagen generation as the first step. Then hot synergise with Calcium stabilised Bran and Pollard (Wheat grass) for the other 4 needs including botanic Vitamin B for calm energy and Omegas for overall joint health. We are continually amazed by how well TuffRock EJF is received by horses of all ages... from the needs of developing weanling or yearlings, incredibly popular for broodmares

in their last trimester with several black type winners as a result, performance or showhorses and my favourite, those we want simply comfortable in the paddock. My most famous TuffRock EJF Testimonial comes from kicking dirt at an invitational campdraft, wearing my TuffRock cap, old mate next to me proudly points to his granddaughter in the cut-out and we watched it go round. I said congratulations and he said “.. thanks, your products work, of course I asked which TuffRock he likes? Poultice is bloody good however that joint powder (EJF) is amazing, don’t know how only one small 50 gram scoop each day keeps my 25-year-old horse in such great condition. I competed this horse then my daughter and now it helped my granddaughter just make the finals at the age of 8!”

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, environmental management will also so assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

Gold Coast plans for brilliant Ballarat winner Supplied by MAGIC MILLIOINS A member of the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young Stable, Cusack was sent out a $10 pop with bookies in a wide open race and overcame greenness for a gutsy win in the Magic Millions Ballarat 2YO Classic. Rider Craig Newitt was able to get enough out of the son of Not a Single Doubt as he snuck home to beat Matt Cumani's Cover Star, while Clayton Douglas' Epic Centre was a length back in third. The win was enjoyed by Cusack's all female ownership group - 20 share holders who are eyeing off a slice of the $500,000 Magic Millions Racing Women Bonus run in conjunction with the $2 million The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast on January 15. "He was tough," Busuttin said. "He didn't do everything 100 per cent. He was sort of off the bridle on the point of the turn. I thought 'you're in trouble' but then he was hanging out from the horse inside (of) him, but he hung tough and it was great. "For a great bunch of owners, some first timers amongst them! (The ownership comprises) a bunch of ladies that have got together and bought the horse. They'll be chasing the ladies' bonus up on the Gold Coast.

Cusack wins $250,000 Magic Millions Ballarat 2YO Classic (1000m). "That is certainly a lot harder but he's basically got his ticket in the race so all being well we'll go up there." Cusack was a $200,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy for Busuttin Racing from the Fernrigg Farm draft in January. The win was celebrated by the Fernrigg team who are preparing his full sister as Lot 792 at the 2022 sale. Meanwhile, group performer Aquagirl gave her connections a big pay day when she scored a driving win in the $150,000 Magic Millions Ballarat 3YO & 4YO Classic (1100m) later in the day. A $55,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy for syndicator Wylie Dalziel in

conjunction with Peter Moody and trainer Phillip Stokes from the Cressfield draft, Aquagirl was sent out at good odds after three runs this campaign including a last start stakes run over the Flemington Cup Carnival. The well-bred Aquagirl (Headwater) is a half sister to group winner Villami and is from the multiple group winning Dehere mare Galapagos Girl. North of the border outstanding galloper Count De Rupee scored the biggest win of his rising career when he led home a Magic Millions clean sweep trifecta result in the $1 million The Gong at Kembla Grange.

Locally trained by Robert and Luke Price, Count De Rupee was coming off a gallant second in the recent $7.5 million Golden Eagle when he overcame trouble in a slashing run. Sent out the favourite, he camped off the speed under Brock Ryan before the pair with a stunning burst in the straight for an easy win to the cheers of the locals. A son of Real Impact, Count De Rupee was a $145,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy for Robert Price from the Arrowfield Stud draft in 2019. From just 15 starts, he's earned his connections more than $2.4 million with six wins and seven placings currently on his imposing record. Proven big race performer Eleven Eleven swept the other feature at Kembla Grange when he stormed home to win the $300,000 The Warra for Greg Hickman. The five-year-old son of Fastnet Rock was a $230,000 buy for Hickman from the Edinburgh Park draft at the 2018 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. As it stands he's earned over $2.28 million and he is likely to be heading to the $10.25 million Magic Millions Raceday in January to win his third feature on the big day. The $12.895 million Magic Millions Race Series now heads to Wyong with two feature races on December 15.

How owners personalities can affect their horses By SUE SPENCE Did you know that your personality and emotions not only affect your friends and family but also your horse? Does your horse sometimes react nervously around you , appear scared and not settled? Or does your horse or pony walk right into you and shove you out the wa!? Which horse or pony are you ? It helps you to understand your personality and the emotions you feel especially when you are upset and how you come across to others. Sunny , Yogi , Larry and Mindy are my real horses and ponies and I help people understand themselves and others so they can learn to communicate better . I have not humanised my ponies and Sunny, I have ‘horseanised’ the humans I work with. Think about how many people you know who are so different from one another. You will have quiet friends, loud friends , funny or shy friends. Do you get angry or anxious when things don’t go how you want. ? Is it really easy to say no or really hard to say no? Sunny and Yogi (without realising ) can come across as quite loud and boisterous. They can sometimes get impatient with people who cant make a decision quickly. Mindy and Larry will come across as more quiet and shy and sometimes not very confident. They find really loud people make them feel uncomfortable If you are like Sunny (check out his body language , he likes to be in charge!) you are more likely to get frustrated and angry if things are not going well with your horse or humans. If you have a more nervous horse getting angry will make him or her really anxious and scared. It will also make the humans around you very uncomfortable or even start an argument. It’s so important that you breathe out completely when you start to get frustrated or angry especially when your asking your horse or human to do something. If you hold your breathe all your energy builds up and your “ask “ will become a “tell“. You have a stronger personality because you are meant to make others feel safe , not scared. You never want your horse or humans to feel scared of you , you want to make them feel secure and relaxed. Breathe it out to chill it out. Larry represents personalities that are more laid back, are great at organising and are really helpful to other personalities. They like to do things well so may Page 28

at times over think how they are practicing their horse training or completing school assignments. Especially on show days as sometimes you are trying so hard to get everything perfect your body can tense up which makes your horse uncomfortable. The best thing to do is just relax as you do your best. Mindy represents the ones who are quieter, find it really hard to say no and sometimes get bossed around by others (even their horse, especially at feed time). If your horse or pony nearly pushes you over at feed time and it makes you feel scared make sure you get someone to help with some ground skills (back up especially ) so your horse starts to respect your personal space. It’s never ok for them to push into you or nearly run you over. They must learn to wait until you call them in to begin eating their dinner. You will find once you start learning how to get your horse or pony to respect your body language and personal space you will start to feel more confident around bossy humans as well. Yogi personalities find it hard to focus and sit still. If you feel like Yogi, it will be hard to focus on one thing for too long. I am like a Yogi and when I used to practice my dressage tests I found it so hard to focus as all I wanted to do was jump. My horse and I would drift across the arena as I would be looking across the paddock at the jumps all the time! If you have trouble concentrating, imagine you have laser beams coming out of your eyes shining onto where you want to ride to or walk to, it will give you direction and focus. It helped me so much and I use lasers not just when riding but also when studying. To calm down when you get over excited breath slowly and deeply while you are laser beaming an

object so your eyes stay still. As your eyes stay still and you relax, your brain will slow down! Walk slower , talk slower , and your horse will feel much more comfortable around you. We are all different for a reason. Feel proud of who you are and appreciate the differences in one another. New rearing bit with brakes for control Supplied by WINNING TONGUE PLATE bit

Introducing the 5 star-rated patented design Rearing Bit with Brakes for complete control. Rearing bits have not changed since their inception until now. The award-winning Australian company, Intelligent Inventions, recipient of 13 international awards, has launched another winner - the revolutionary Rearing Bit with Brakes. Featuring the internationally renowned Winning Tongue Plate (WTP) bit, the Rearing Bit with Brakes is made from steel and includes two adjustable chains which apply nose, chin and poll pressure, stopping highly strung unruly horses in their tracks. It is proven to create easy leverage over the horse to subdue unwanted behaviours, giving the handler total control for sales, race days and daily training. Endorsed by trainers, handlers, veterinarians and stud farms: “It has been a game-changer.” – Greg Booth,

Trainer/Vet. “We were able to remove the earmuffs. He has been an angel to lead around and stops them getting their tongue over.” – Nicole Luke, Trainer. “These are a breakthrough.” – Ruby Chatterton, Foreman. “You will be amazed at the difference they can make.” – Mel Leitch, Trainer. The Rearing Bit with Brakes may be used in front of the horse’s bit for control in the race-day parade ring. It is also ideal for yearlings and young stallions at auction to reinforce pressure and release, teaching the horse to respond kindly.

Making the commitment to learn By TANJA KRAUS I've been a lifelong student for many years of the horse and in other careers before I went full time with horses. The most significant thing to help my growth, no matter in what area, is my commitment to learning. It may seem pretty straightforward to think that everyone is 'committed to learning' in any chosen field. You would consider that anyone paying to be a student, or attend a clinic, would be committed, after all they are paying to be there, right? In my experience, no. And when I say that I don't mean that students aren't committed, or don't want to learn, what I mean is that it hasn't been a conscious decision. I can offer a couple of examples. Many years ago I found myself 'drifting off' when I was a student at clinics. I'd hear the instructor or clinician talk about something, or explain something and I'd think 'yeah I know that', because technically I did. I'd been studying horsemanship at that point for more than 10 years. S,o if I didn't know what a lateral bend was, then there would be a bit of an issue. Having said that, I made the decision then, that I would commit to being focused, to listening, and instead of having an 'I know

Listen, focus and be open to learning new things or new ways of doing things

this' attitude, I would have a 'what can I learn from this' approach. That decision changed my life. All of a sudden I had a renewed passion for my craft, and was actively trying to find things to learn. The second example is to actively learn the 'stuff' that you can when you aren't on the horse, that will help you learn while you are on your horse - like terminology. Most terminology is interchangeable

between instructors and disciplines, and while there may be slight variations on how they teach or interpret a movement - a shoulder in is a shoulder in, no matter who you are learning from. Taking the time to learn the definition of the terminology means when you are on the horse you'll spend more time doing a 'shoulder in' than talking about what it is. The Horse Report

From Paddock to Show Ring Words by Alice Clarke Part 1 of 6. More to come in upcoming issues. Time to bring in that pony and transform him into your star… but not sure where you start? Every pony is different and every person has their own way of doing things, but we try to follow the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principal. We break it down into 6 categories which we will go through in the next 5 issues in coming months. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Maintenance Feeding Housing/Rugging Work/Training Show Gear for Horse/Rider Presentation

MAINTENANCE This is important, the basics when owning any horse and addressing your duty of care. These principals are a must before you start your show preparation and be done on a regular basis. No amount of money or work will transform your pony if you don’t practice the basics of pony/horse care. WORMING Your horse needs to be on a regular worming program appropriate to its age and environment. Young-stock are particularly susceptible to worm burdens so if your unsure your local vet can help you. It’s also a good

idea to rotate using different brands or wormer. It’s been proven over time the worms can become resistant to the same wormer. HOOF CARE As the old saying goes, no hoof, no horse. It is critical to ensure your horses hooves are maintained regularly. ,QFRUUHFW KRRI FDUH FDQ DIIHFW PRYHPHQW FRQ¿UPDWLRQ and soundness. EQUINE DENTISTY A horses teeth continue to grow throughout it’s lifetime. To maintain optimal food absorption and to ensure comfort during its work your horse needs to be seen by D YHW RU TXDOL¿HG HTXLQH GHQWLVW RQ D UHJXODU EDVHV HANDLING This might sound silly but your pony must have basic handling. You should be able to catch it, lead it, brush it all over and handle it safely. Every time you interact with your pony you are in fact teaching it. It’s good to practice and teach your horse to stand still and tie up quietly for periods of time. This is important when it comes time for clipping and show prepping your horse as we will discuss in more detail in a later issue. Last but not least. It is important to spend this initial time with your equine building a relationship and trust, a true partnership. Just remember, horses are masters of body language not the English language. What you put in is what you will get back. Practice all this then you will be ready for Step 2 in the next PRINTED issue.

Holstein Park Jumanji 5 year old, 16.2 bay warmblood gelding. Sire: Holstein Park Jazzlander ( Jazz x Lander) Dam: Holstein Park Lorette (L’Espoir x Lander) A rare opportunity to purchase a quality young horse that has already had competition experience & proven himself as an easy calm quality competition horse. Jimmy as he is known around here, has been bought along slowly as a young horse and has just started working towards the novice level work. This is a seriously nice horse with the temperament and trainability to go through to the FEI levels. Three super paces, big walk, lovely trot and a highlight being the canter. These paces are only going to develop even more in time. Not a spooky or hot horse, just goes nicely off your leg. Really good in the contact. This is absolutely 100% my loss and someone elses gain. Will only be sold to a competition home under good instruction as I would really love to see him progress through into the FEI levels. This was a very very hard decision and was definitely not taken lightly. All I can say is I am going to regret letting this one go! Fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis) Supplied by DPI NSW Fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis) looks like a daisy with little yellow flowers. Originating in Southeast Africa, it was first seen in the Hunter Valley in 1918. It invades pastures and can poison livestock. Fireweed grows along the Australian east coast from Victoria to Central Queensland. It is most invasive in coastal regions. It is also on the northern and southern tablelands. Fireweed thrives in overgrazed pastures, disturbed or cultivated soil but does not grow well in shaded areas or wet areas. Each plant can produce up to 18,000 seeds. Wind spreads the light, hairy seeds. Most seeds fall within five meters of the parent plant but some can be blown much further. Spreading beyond one kilometre is more likely through human activity. Fireweed is spread in contaminated hay, silage and grain products, by livestock birds and other animals, by sticking to clothing, vehicles or machinery Do not bale pastures with fireweed for silage or hay. Livestock poisoning Fireweed contains chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Livestock that eat it can get liver damage. The damage is irreversible and gets worse the more fireweed an animal eats. Hay, silage or grain contaminated with fireweed plants or seeds can poison livestock. Identifying fireweed poisoning is difficult. If you think you have affected animals contact your vet. Cattle Cattle are usually reluctant to eat fireweed. Young, hungry or new stock not familiar with fireweed are more likely to eat it. Cattle can lose weight, or their growth slows. Some develop brain damage, which can show as confusion and poor coordination. Sudden death can happen in fat cattle that have eaten fireweed in the last 3 to 6 months. Sheep and goats Sheep and goats are more inclined to eat fireweed than cattle. They are also up to 20 times more tolerant of its toxins. Merinos tend to eat less fireweed, other sheep breeds can eat it to excess. Sheep that eat fireweed over two or more years may become unwell or die suddenly. Sheep and goats rarely show signs of brain damage. Fireweed can poison alpacas too, but less is known about the effects on them. Horses Horses have more problems with fireweed poisoning. Unpigmented skin can become sensitive to sunlight, redden and peel away. Brain damage is common. Symptoms can include: dullness, aimless wandering, an uncoordinated gait, pressing up against Page 42

Fireweed (Senecio madagascariensis) looks like a daisy with little yellow flowers. fences, gates or trees and possible blindness. What does Fireweed look like? Fireweed is an annual or biennial herb 10–60 cm tall. It is erect with many branches. Flowering is mostly from spring to autumn but times vary for different parts of NSW. All stages of the plant from seedlings to flowering may be present at any time of year in some locations. Flushes of seedlings appear after rain in warm weather. Leaves are: Bright green, fleshy and narrow, 2–7 cm long and 3–10 mm wide, smooth, toothed or lobed on the edges, stalkless and clasped around the stem, alternate along the stems. Flowers are: Small, yellow and daisy-like with up to 15 petals, 1–2 cm in diameter, in clusters at the ends of branches, emerging from a small cup of modified leaves called bracts (usually 21 bracts), more abundant on some plants than others and up to 200 per plant. Seeds are: Small and light, 1–3 mm long, cylindrical in shape, downy on the surface, attached to fine, white feathery hairs that aid in dispersal by wind. Roots are fibrous 10–20 cm deep, branched from a central taproot. How to control Fireweed: Long-term fireweed control needs to consider that most new seedlings appear in autumn, many new seedlings appear after rain when temperatures are 15–27°C seedlings grow fast and can flower 6–10 weeks after emerging. Flowering and seeding occur mostly in spring and most plants die off by late spring Some plants live for up to three years - the tops die back in spring and regrow the following autumn. Long-term follow up control measures are essential because about 15% of seeds remain dormant for over 10 years. In pastures, combine grazing strategies, pasture improvement and strategic herbicide use. In environmental areas hand-pull individual

plants and spot spray herbicide. Avoid bringing hay, feed or silage from known fireweed areas onto your property. Check feedout areas and paddocks for fireweed plants. Maintain healthy pastures; Maintain healthy pastures as the best longterm defence against fireweed. Have good autumn–winter pasture cover to suppress new fireweed plants. Avoid grazing too hard. Weeds like fireweed then establish in thin and bare patches. To maintain healthy pasture cover, grow combinations of winter and summer pastures. Rest pastures between grazing periods, test soil to check fertility, use fertiliser if needed. Improve poor pastures: Large patches of bare ground and lots of weeds are signs of poor pastures. Pasture improvement to control fireweed is proven to work best north of Sydney where there’s more rain in summer). South of Sydney it rains more in winter and pastures are slower to establish. Selective herbicides may be needed to control fireweed. To improve your pasture: Sow vigorous pasture plants that compete with fireweed, cover bare soil, correct soil fertility problems and adjust grazing to always keep at least 90% of the ground covered with good pasture plants. Have even higher cover during peak fireweed germination in autumn Be careful with fertilisers. Applying them before competitive pasture species are present can increase the fireweed problem. Suitable summer-growing pasture species include Setaria, Kikuyu, Paspalum, Rhodes grass. Winter or spring-growing pasture species include Phalaris, Cocksfoot, Fescue, Ryegrass, White Clover and Subterranean Clover. Consult your agronomist for appropriate pasture species, fertiliser recommendations and pasture establishment techniques. Continued page 43

Controlling fireweed in your pastures From page 42 Hand weeding: Pull out individual plants in small, isolated patches or sensitive environmental areas. Wear gloves to protect skin from the plant’s poisons. Bag and dispose of the pulled plants. They are still poisonous to livestock and produce viable seeds if they have flowers. Slashing and mulching: Careful slashing or mulching can reduce fireweed seeding when done before late spring when less than 25% of plants are flowering. Slash at least every six weeks if pastures can recover faster than the cut fireweed plants Wait two weeks before grazing slashed areas. Livestock are more likely to eat the cut, wilted fireweed. Avoid slashing or mulching in late spring, or when more than 25% of plants are flowering. This can trigger plants to regrow, surviving into summer rather than dying off at the end of spring. That makes next season’s control harder. Biological control: There are no effective biological control agents available for fireweed. It’s difficult to find a biological control that’s harmless to the native Senecio species. These insects can attack and sometimes destroy fireweed plants: • A chrysomelid beetle (Chalcolampra species) • A magpie moth (Nyctemera amica) • A blue stem borer moth (Patagoniodes farinaria). They cannot be relied on for control. The damage usually occurs after the plants have pro-

Fireweed growing along a fence. Left of fence: pasture with ryegrass competes with fireweed. duced seeds Chemical control: Herbicides are most effective in combination with healthy, competitive pastures. The best time to treat fireweed with herbicide is late autumn. This controls the peak numbers of seedlings and young plants. By late winter herbicide treatments are much less effective. Used correctly, selective herbicides don’t kill grasses but do slow their growth. They can kill legumes, which are important pasture plants. Blanket applications of selective herbicide are problematic because pasture growth is set back. Wherever possible limit the application areas in paddocks. Bromoxynil herbicides cause the

least damage to legumes but only kill young fireweed plants. Protect legumes by applying only when the maximum daily air temperature will be below 20°C. Metsulfuron-methyl herbicides can kill older fireweed but also kill pasture legumes. Flowering plants can be spot sprayed with herbicides containing aminopyralid or metsulfuron-methyl. Herbicide options: Metsulfuron-methyl 600 g/kg Spot spray application Rate: 10 g in 100 L of water Boom spray application Rate: 40 g/ha Recommended not to graze for seven days before treatment and for seven days after treatment to allow adequate chemical uptake in target weeds. Bromoxynil 200 g/L Boom spray Rate: 1.4 L/ha Seedling application. In pastures apply with low volume boom spray during autumn/winter when weeds are young and actively growing. Rate: 2.8 L/ha Early flowering application. In pastures apply with low volume boom spray during autumn/winter when weeds are young and actively growing. Do not graze or cut for stock

food for 8 weeks after application. Bromoxynil 250 g/L + Diflufenican 25 g/L (Jaguar) Booms spray application Rate: 500 mL per ha up to 4 leaf stage Do not graze or cut for stock food for 8 weeks after application. Fluroxypyr 140 g/L + Aminopyralid 10 g/L Rate: 500 mL in 100 L of water Apply to flowering plants up to 30 cm tall. Withholding period: Not required for pastures when used as directed. Do not graze or cut crops for stock food for 7 days after application. Picloram 100 g/L + Triclopyr 300 g/L + Aminopyralid 8 g/L (Grazon Extra®) Rate: 350 mL in 100 L of water Apply as a thorough foliar spray Where product is used to control woody weeds in pastures there is a restriction of 12 weeks for use of treated pastures for making hay and silage; using hay or other plant material for compost, mulch or mushroom substrate; or using animal waste from animals grazing on treated pastures for compost, mulching, or spreading on pasture/crops. Federal support for national traceability program Supplied by AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT Australian Government is providing $1.1 million towards the establishment of national traceability arrangements for all horses. It will contribute to continued progress through the National Horse Traceability Working Group Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia, David Littleproud said the funding would contribute to the continued progress towards recommendations from the National Horse Traceability Working Group. “Horses and maintaining their health status are part of the rural social fabric on which Australian agriculture’s continued productivity relies,” Minister Littleproud said. “Reliable national horse identification and traceability supports good biosecurity, exports, food safety and animal welfare outcomes. “The Australian Government is prepared to do its part, to support the horse industry and state and territory regulators, to kickstart practical traceability arrangements that benefit the horse industry and community. “Establishing appropriate national arrangements will also help to bolster trading partners’ confidence in our arrangements, including animal welfare attributes — and in turn assist access for horse product exports to markets. “Horse traceability will safeguard our rural and regional industries and communities and the enviable horse health status on which they rely.

The Federal Government is contributing $1.1 million twoards a national tracing system for all horses. “Agriculture ministers established the working group, which comprises state, territory and Commonwealth officials as well as horse industry and interest group representatives. I thank Victoria for its work in leading this work. “The Australian Government’s funding con-

tribution will support the group to up the tempo on its efforts to resolve recommendations on the form and implementation of national horse traceability arrangements. “I look forward to receiving, alongside my state and territory ministerial colleagues, the advice of the working group.”

The Horse Report Equitana Melbourne rescheduled till November 2022 By Rod Lockwood The COVID pandemic is a nightmare that will not go away, devastating small businesses and locking us down for weeks on end. It is depressing to see border closures, social distancing rules and curfews restricting us, but we all need to respect the health requirements. For EQUITANA here we are yet again, devastated to advise that for a third time, due to the uncertainty created by the impacts of the Delta variant of COVID-19, we have been left with no choice but to cancel this edition of the event. There is still too much uncertainty in the current environment to proceed in November. It is deeply disappointing that the equine community from around Australia will not be able to come together to enjoy the fun and excitement of EQUITANA Melbourne for the second year in a row – we had such high hopes! We are confident that moving the event to 10 to 13 November 2022 will finally see us enjoying EQUITANA Melbourne in all her glory. More of the population will be vaccinated, we will have the ability to cross state borders more freely and we’ll be able to deliver the EQUITANA Melbourne that we all know and love. The pandemic has had a stranglehold on the events industry, with over 18 months of sporadic deliveries, dozens of cancellations and missed experiences throughout. As passionate providers of events, our team desperately wants to continue to deliver unforgettable events for our attendees long into the future. As for right now, to achieve that goal, we need your support. For those who can, we ask that you please retain your tickets and support this event and join us for EQUITANA Melbourne in November 2022. We can’t wait to be back at the Melbourne Showgrounds with you next year for what is going to be one hell of a celebration. We promise it will be worth the wait. All purchased tickets are valid for the 2022 event, and as a way to say thank you for supporting us, all Super Ticket and Day Ticket holders who roll their ticket over for 2022 will be given a voucher to spend in the exhibition halls at the event.

Ticket holders who are not able to attend the new dates will be able to apply for a refund, minus admin fees until 24/09/21. TicketBooth will be in touch with all ticket holders directly with more information. We send a heartfelt thanks to all our EQUITANA Melbourne community for sticking

with us during this time, your support means the world to us. With the expected transition to post-COVID normalcy, EQUITANA Melbourne 2022 will return to national prominence as Australia’s greatest equine show. For more info visit www.equitana.com.au

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
