One thing that impresses me is the way Gower lists questions for readers to ponder, so readers can determine their own goals and how they want to measure their results.

This is not a book that insists you duplicate what the author has done. Instead, she encourages you to define your own purpose and mis-

sion statement, then work toward what you want to accomplish.

The Thinking Horse Breeder stresses the importance of making the right choices for the right reasons. Producing poor quality horses, not treating them well, or simply churning out more equines are things she strongly counsels against, and she explains why.

Gower's generosity toward and respect for other breeders shines throughout this book. She quotes them, often in long passages, letting other professionals share their experiences. You'll have chances to learn from some of the most successful horse breeders in Australia, and you'll notice the repeated themes and points of view that they share.

Given her experience, you'd be wise to take Jeanette Gower's advice at face value. What she says is backed up by other breeders with excellent results and reputations.

One of the most unusual things about The Thinking Horse Breeder is the data Gower shares about her own successful stud farm. How many horses a year does she breed? How many have died, and why? This brings home some of the heartrending situations breeders must deal with.

What contributions can you expect the mare and the stallion to make to each foal? Which is more important, the mare or the stallion, and why? How do bloodlines influence breeding, and for how long? How can you look at a potential mare or stallion and identify physical characteristics that are good or likely to lead to performance problems in their foals?

To geld or not to geld, to keep a stallion or buy services, and the merits of live breeding and artificial insemination are other topics The Thinking Horse Breeder delves into. Gower makes it clear that keeping a stallion is not for everyone. She also offers suggestions for managing a stallion if you choose to do so.

This is a comprehensive book. If you follow Gower's advice, The Thinking Horse Breeder will inspire, educate, and assist you throughout your breeding career. When in doubt, check it and find the wisdom you need to answer your questions and challenges. This is a book every horse breeder, and potential breeder, should own.

The Horse Report Gestation period for mares and foaling due date

The gestation period for mares is approximately 320-370 days from the first time being bred.

To generalize, the estimation of the due date, use a 340 day gestation period.

So if you’re wanting your foal to be born in early August, you need to breed your mare in the last week of August or the first few weeks in September.

There are various techniques used in equine reproduction which include semen collections and storage from stallions and artificial insemination of mares.

Artificial Insemination

Artificial Insemination (A.I.) is the placement of semen into the uterus of a mare at the time of ovulation. A.I. is used in horses for a number of reasons including the availability of the stallion, as an aid in managing mares with reproductive difficulties, and also to decrease the workload of the stallion. Successful A.I. involves regular ultrasound examination and monitoring of the mare’s cycle and necessitates close communication between the mare owner, the veterinarian and the semen provider.

Three methods of A.I. are used in horses:

Fresh Semen

Fresh semen is collected and used almost immediately on the farm at which it is collected.

Chilled Semen

Chilled semen involves collection, dilution with extender, cooling and transport of semen to the mare for use within 36 hours.

Frozen Semen

Frozen semen is collected and extended then frozen and stored in straws in liquid nitrogen. This technique allows access to semen from horses which are located overseas, currently competing, injured or even dead. Using frozen semen is convenient because the semen is available to be used when needed, but requires more intensive management

and timing of insemination close to ovulation of the mare’s follicle.

Frozen semen has several distinct advantages over fresh and cooled semen.

The genetics of a valuable stallion can be preserved indefinitely by collecting and storing doses of frozen semen during the nonbreeding season.

Frozen semen can be sent by courier to local or interstate farms or exported overseas

The primary disadvantages of frozen semen are stallion variability in response to freezing, cost to collect, freeze and store semen, intensified mare management, and slightly lower pregnancy rates per cycle. Sperm from some stallions does not tolerate freezing and thawing. Consequently, post –thaw motility and pregnancy rates can vary greatly between stallions.

Proper storage and handling of frozen

semen is critical for future success.

The mare is inseminated immediately after ovulation is detected.

Prediction of ovulation and timing of insemination with frozen semen is facilitated by administration of ovulation-inducing agents, such as hCG or deslorelin.

Typically, a mare in oestrus would be given one of these agents once a follicle larger than 35mm in diameter is detected. In most instances, ovulation will occur in 36 to 40 hours after hCG or deslorelin administration.

Management of mares for breeding with frozen semen may seem intimidating. However, by following a few simple guidelines, frozen semen can be used very successfully in a breeding program. For more information on breeding and breeding requirement talk to you local vet.

There are many things to consider when preparing for your first foal to be born, one of which is a safe, suitable foaling area.

Fencing, ground cover, paddock hazards and shelter are all very important.

Foal fencing should reach right to the ground, be strong with no gaps or anything protruding that a foal can be injured on. Repair or replace any areas that a head or hoof can fit through, pay special attention to gateways in particular the space between the gate and the post. Beware of electric fencing, newborns do not have the agility to avoid electric fencing and can become entangled.

Introducing a foal to electric fencing should be done under close supervision.

Solid fencing lined with strong mesh or shadecloth is ideal. Water troughs and dams are another hazard, wobbly foals often drown in dams, bath tubs and water troughs.

Safely and securely cover permanent troughs and tubs, fence off dams and provide water in multiple smaller narrow containers that a foal cannot fit into and can still drink from.

Remove any fallen trees, farm

equipment or debris to prevent leg injuries.

Protection from rain, wind and sun is very important, healthy foals are tough and can handle poor weather very well but they still need protection from the elements, especially extreme heat.

Good tree coverage, a shelter shed or lockable walk-in/walkout stable are ideal.

One of the biggest risks to foals at birth is bacterial infections. If your mare is foaling outside make sure you have a well-rest-

ed, grassy paddock or yard. If you’re in drought or flood, have bales of clean rodent-free straw ready to spread out as ground cover during foaling as this will reduce the amount of bacteria your foal is exposed to. If you’re foaling down in a stable, make sure it is large enough for your mare to easily move around.

Thoroughly clean it and keep bedding fresh and clean. The same applies for paddock shelters.

Lastly keep dogs and other ani-

mals, especially pigs and poultry, well away and even other horses if unsure on how they will react to a newborn foal. Some horses can become very aggressive and kill or steal foals especially when restricted to smaller paddocks.

They can also fight through fences and the foals can become injured in the process. Have the paddock prepared in plenty of time before the mare’s due date as not all mares go full term. Happy foaling.

Feeding ponies can prove to be challenging

Nutritional guidelines for feeding horses are based on bodyweight, so in theory feeding ponies correctly is just a scaled down version of a larger horse diet.

However, in practice, getting pony diets right can be challenging due to the high nutritional content of pasture, pony appetites and an increased risk of metabolic conditions in easykeeper ponies.

It is important to carefully manage your pony's body condition to keep it within a healthy range. Many pony breeds have a genetic predisposition to metabolic diseases which increase the risk of laminitis.

Obesity increases the likelihood of developing Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) which is a metabolic condition that affects the body's ability to use and store blood sugar, often leading to insulin resistance (IR) and laminitis. The most common cause of laminitis in pastured ponies is a spike in blood insulin levels triggered by eating grass, hay or hard feeds high in sugar and starch. The risk is highest during spring and autumn when pastures become too high in plant carbohydrates (sugars or starches) for most ponies to safely graze. How to provide adequate & appropriate roughage

Despite the challenges of high sugar grass, the first step in planning a good pony diet is to ensure enough appropriate roughage. Ponies need to be able to eat at least 1.5 per cent of their bodyweight in dry matter per day for a healthy gut. For a 250 kg pony, that adds up to 4 to 5 kg of hay or up to 25 kg of fresh grass!

Insulin resistant (IR) ponies must avoid high starch/sugar feeds and forage, so feed and pasture management is paramount for their welfare. This means they can't eat feeds containing cereal grains or by-products and need to be kept off-pasture for much of the year to manage their forage intake. See guidelines (above) for choosing the low sugar hay appropriate for IRponies.

Ponies consuming large volumes of highly palatable pastures can gain weight rapidly. If your pony becomes overweight but is not insulin resistant or dangerously obese, you may be able to manage weight loss without removing access to pasture by:

* Removing excess calories from the diet by cutting hard feeds back to just a token amount to carry the necessary mineral supplements.

* Limiting the quantity of grass consumed with a grazing muzzle or by dividing the paddock into strips or small sections with moveable electric tape. Do not regraze sections until growth is at least 15 cm high.

If using a grazing muzzle, keep it on at least 90% of the time the horse is at pasture, to prevent compensatory gorging while muzzle is removed. (Ahorse or pony can eat a full day's worth of food in just 4 hours!).

If your pony does not lose weight with these measures, remove access to pasture so you have total control of the entire intake. Provide low sugar hay (see side box) weighing 1.5 per cent of their bodyweight and a concentrated mineral balancer to complement the hay. Slow feeder hay nets can help make the daily ration last longer and to limit the risk of ponies developing gastric ulcers if left without feed for 4 hours or more.

When feeding older ponies, ask your vet or equine dentist to check that their teeth allow good utilization of grass or hay. Horses with worn or missing teeth may need to be fed chaff (and lots of it!) to ensure their roughage needs are met.

Adequate roughage usually provides enough protein to meet the daily needs of mature ponies. Breeding, growing and old ponies need

Forage for ponies with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) or insulin resistance requires constant, detailed attention to sugar and starch levels.

* Ideally, choose hay which has been analysed and has a combined ESC + Starch value of less than 10%.

* Avoid high production grasses such as ryegrass and do not feed cereal (oaten, wheaten) hay or chaff.

* If carbohydrate levels of hay are unknown, soak in warm water for 30 minutes or cold for 60 minutes to remove soluble sugars.

* Drain and discard water before feeding. Soaking hay can reduce water soluble carbohydrates by 30%.

* Discard soaked hay after 12 hours if uneaten.

It is the spike in blood glucose and consequently insulin levels that triggers laminitis, so horses with EMS can suffer laminitis without being overweight.

a supplemental protein source such as lucerne hay or chaff if there is no clover in the pasture or by adding full fat soy or legume products in the hard feed. Limit lucerne intake to no more than 30 per cent of intake for hay-reliant ponies.

Only add calories if necessary

Most ponies get more than enough calories from forage and only need salt and a quality mineral balancer pellet or powder in a token feed to receive a healthy diet.

Some hard working or older ponies may need a hard feed to maintain weight. If your pony loses weight, make sure you're feeding enough forage before feeding more hard feed. The safest way to increase the level of energy (calories) in your pony's diet is with a low GI 'super fibre' based feed such as beet pulp, copra, legume hulls, (e.g. chickpea, lupin or soy hulls), legume grains (e.g. lupins) or oils.

These are the only safe options for ponies with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) or insulin resistance (IR) who do not maintain weight from forage alone.

If your pony isn't laminitis-prone, you can feed cereal grains such as oats or barley but these can be too 'heating' for ponies carrying young or nervous riders.

* Super fibres are generally the safest form of calories for ponies but may require a few minutes soaking.

* Uncooked lupins are also best soaked to soften the seed coat - soak whole lupins for 6 hours or overnight. Cracked lupins soften if soaked in boiling water for 10 minutes.

* Whole oats can be fed raw, but other cereal grains such as barley, oats, sorghum should be fed in a cooked form. You can boil them or buy steam-flaked, pelletised, extruded or micronised.

* When using oils for weight gain, take care to keep the diet anti-inflammatory by providing enough omega-3 fatty acids to balance the added pro-inflammatory omega-6 oils.

* Avoid feeds with added molasses - check the labelling on the bag.

TIP: Dampen hard feeds to aid swallowing and reduce the risk of choke.

The amount you'll need to feed depends on your pony's weight, individual metabolism, level of activity and the amount of energy provided by pasture or hay.

If your pony requires a lot of hard feed, it is healthier to give two or more meals per day, with each meal weighing less than 1 kilogram (for a 300 kg pony).

Balance the vitamins, minerals and fatty acids

Feeding your pony a correctly balanced diet complete with all the vitamins, minerals and fatty acids needed will allow their body to function optimally. This can result in improved health, performance and immune function. It's necessary to add vitamins, minerals and small amounts of fatty acids to complement the

roughage and hard feed (if any). Even the best pasture and hay in the world will leave your pony mineral deficient. Zinc, copper, iodine, selenium and vitamin and E are almost always deficient in an unfortified diet. Because some minerals compete for absorption at the same site in the gut, it is possible for a pony to be deficient in one mineral even if the recommended daily intake is given unless all minerals are provided in correct mineral ratios. Provide a mineral supplement to top up and balance the levels in your horse's pasture. An overweight pony needs roughage, salt and minerals, but don't feel that you have to give a 'laminitis-safe' hard feed which, although low in sugar, is nevertheless adding calories that an overweight animal does not need.

Ponies need between 7 to 12gms of plain salt

(sodium chloride - also known as stock, flossy, table and pool salt) per 100kg of bodyweight every day, even when spelling. There's no need to pay extra for pink salt - the trace minerals they contain are insignificant compared to your horse's requirements. Remember to count any salt included in hard feeds and supplements when calculating how much salt to add. It's safe to add the lower recommended amount of salt and offer free choice salt (clean loose salt in a bucket kept under cover) so your horse can top up when required. During hot weather, transport, and after work, feed a low sugar electrolyte supplement especially formulated to replenish electrolytes lost in sweat. Ahandful of damp lucerne chaff, beet pulp or copra make an excellent carrier for salt and a mineral balancer.

Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation is necessary when ponies are reliant on hay for roughage or consume omega-6 rich oils such as rice bran, canola or sunflower oils. Omega-3 rich supplements such as algal meal, protected fish oils, linseeds/flaxseeds and stabilized linseed oil can be used to improve the omega 3 to 6 ratio across the whole diet.

Ponies may also benefit from the addition of other supplements for assisting with particular conditions. Examples include oral joint supplements, aids to metabolism, mycotoxin binders and antioxidants.

It is well worth having a qualified nutritionist check your pony's ration to ensure that it provides all necessary nutrients and is well-balanced. Spending a little time and money on a good diet analysis often saves money being wasted on inappropriate, expensive, inefficient or unnecessary feeds.

Flax Seed Oil provides the richest (almost 60%) natural source ofOmega 3, an essential fatty acid (EFA) which is not generally present in equine foods. Like all animals, horses cannot manufacture this essential fatty acid which is so important for their overall health.

XXXXXXX was reshod today utilising off an alloy shoe with a toe clip - inner circumference seated out to avoid any sole pressure. The horse can return to training.

Solar margin Type IV fractures of this magnitude have well-documented internationally published healing rates of 7 - 12 months. Full resolution of these fractures is rare as most often the fracture fragments are resorbed. Full resolution in a 3 month period was not anticipated.

Aromatherapy is a holistic natural healing treatment that has been used for centuries to treat humans and is now gaining popularity as a therapy for animals, especially horses. Aromatherapy involves the use of essential oils which are pure, natural, herbal remedies and is an alternative therapy to western medicine and medications.

The oils are extracted from plants and have therapeutic properties to help heal and restore the body back to homeostasis. The natural plant extracts promote physical and emotional well-being, healing and combats ailments.

Ahorse can instinctively recognize the medicinal properties of the essential oils that they are being offered and they can select the ones that meet their needs (both emotionally and physically). This process is called self selection.

Horses have a natural ability to self-medicate. In the wild, they can seek out the appropriate plants, soils, herbs, barks, resins and clays to prevent or reduce the harmful effects of pathogens, toxins and keep their bodies in balance.

In a domesticated atmosphere they do not have this luxury so offering them essential oils is a way to help them when needed.

The greatest gift for a rider is a good position and set of aids, using body awareness, centering and imagery. These classical principles of riding make it more enjoyable for the horse and rider partnership.

College offers pathway to equine industry

The Australian Industry Trade College (AITC) came into being to meet the needs of young people.

So they got started on rethinking how to educate, equip and empower.

The AITC started helping young people to find their purpose and proudly pursue a pathway in industry, at school. Some might call it a trade but for the AITC, it is a profession. It’s about finding what fits; about loving what you do. Before opening its doors in 2006, thought was focused on who the AITC needed to be and the role it could play in the education and employment landscape.

The College spoke to educators and to industry, and saw the options available to technically talented, bright minded young people diminish as thinking narrowed around what constitutes ‘clever’and the ‘best’path to success. That was more than 15 years ago and it’s come a long way since then.

Like our young people, the College has evolved, navigated challenges, experienced setbacks and enjoyed great successes.

The College provides a unique two to threeyear program for young people in Years 10 to 12 that focuses on:

 employability skills

Learning how to work with horses is like learning how to cook. In the early days you are going to need a recipe for everything, and you're still going to muck it up.

As you get more relaxed in your own skills, you need recipes for the more complicated interactions, but you start to trust yourself on the basics.

The more you work with them the less you need the recipies but they are always there to refer to.

Some days you may try a really complicated dish and lose your confidence, you go back to basics to show yourself that you do know how to do this.

Eventually you start making up your own recipes, you find that you and your horse enjoy certain things, and so you refine them, and become really fantastic at those things.

Eventually you learn what a dish needs, just by tasting it. Just like eventually you know what a horse needs, just by being with it. But it all starts with learning how to boil water. Don't try to skip the steps. The fun is in the cooking

Horses at The Oaks southwest of Sydney is having a busy and successful time training and competing. He has just done well at the recent Festival of Sydney and is presently preparing a group of young home-bred horses for the prestigious Waratah Showjumping event at SIEC at the end of August. Eventer John Twomey continues to win and place around South Africa which has been his home for the last few years.

He is competing his own horse, 'Just Jasper', as well as riding for other people. Reporting from an event in Gauteng, a small province in S.A., he rode 'Kilmokea'. "She put her best foot forward to finish second on her dressage score less than a penalty behind her stablemate 'Just Jasper'. Thanks to all the officials and volunteers who pulled off a super show, and thank you to TECHNYFLEX."

Paralympian Victoria Davies recently posted that the Australian High Performance squads have been updated. "I'm proud to say I still hold my position on the green squad (podium ready and podium potential). I've been on the squad for nine consecutive years, and I'm proud to have done it every step of the way with my PRE-Spanish stallion, 'Andaluka Elegido' and Lusitano stallion 'Celere'."

He had significant pain in both front feet and some discomfort after the flexing of both front fetlock joints. His shoeing was altered to encourage more heel growth and he was put on TECHNYFLEX Equine.

"It was noticeable in less than a month that the pain in his joints had disappeared, although his feet were still uncomfortable. Six weeks later, when his feet had improved further, he won two races at the NZ Cup Carnival. The Equestrian Australia Dressage Committee is once again supporting a special Gold Medal System to recognise outstanding performances throughout the year. Gold medals have been distributed every year since 2010.

2023 National Dressage Performance Gold Medals will be awarded to horse or pony/rider combinations who obtain the following in the qualifying period as stated below.

Gold Medals (Does not include Freestyles): Novice or Elementary level - 3 performances of 75% or more at each level

Medium or Advanced level - 3 performances of 70% or more at each level

PSG or Inter I (small tour) - 3 performances of 70% or more across the small tour Inter II or Grand Prix (big tour) - 3 performances of 70% or more across the big tour

Conditions:

The qualifying period is from 7th September 2022 to 8th September 2023 (the period from the closing date of entries for the 2022 Australian Dressage Championships up to the closing date for entries for the 2023 Australian Dressage Championships). Australian riders are eligible. Riders must be current financial members of Equestrian Australian to be eligible. Performances can be from any Official competition.

Official Competitive overall scores only will be eligible (not individual judges scores).

HC results are not eligible. Freestyle results are not eligible. Performance medals will be presented at the 2023 Australian Dressage Championships on a day and time to be determined. Vaulting Queensland State Championships

The 2023 Vaulting Queensland Championship were held at Bellara Park on the 1st and 2nd of July. The event, sponsored by Equestrian Queensland, Gala Equine and CEN Nutrition, was attended by over 40 athletes who travelled from as far north as Sarina in North Queensland and as far south as Sydney in New South Wales.

The two days of competition were hotly contested, and vaulters competed in horse and barrel events as individuals, pas de deux (pairs) and Squads.

The horses had their opportunity to develop and shine in the lunger and horse development classes.

The competition was supported by three esteemed judges: Angie Deaks; Nina Fritzell and Anna Betts who evaluated every competitor in every class.

Prizes, from First to Sixth, were awarded to vaulters, lungers and horses for classes completed at the end of each day.

The winners of the championship awards were presented on the Sunday with the following vaulters, lungers and horses achieving penultimate success:

MULLUMBIMBY SHOW 2023

The 2023 Mullumbimby Show will be held over 3 days from 10th till 12th of November. Exciting changes for the always beautiful main arena of the Mullumbimby show have been made for our Horse section entrants. New timetables will be trialled to alleviate disruptions.

The Main Ring will have hack, hunter and breed classes including Youngstock feature classes.

Get your creative ideas ready for the fun of the Fancy Dress class, anything goes class for horse and rider/handler.

The Far North Coast Branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society are providing prizes for our Australian Stock Horse Feature ring which has handler, hack and working classes for junior and senior registered Stock Horses.

Our ever-popular Show jumping program will be run on Saturday & Sunday with great cash prizes from our generous sponsors for the great selection of events.

“BYE BYE FLY BYE FLY”

QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE

ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

The usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways:

Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and Camphor oil” which naturally relieves itchy skin.

These significant benefits are also enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can also be applied to surface wounds, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help prevent irritation and possible infection by nuisance insects.

Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extensive field experience has proven KURITCH to be a most effective solution for both preventing and healing distressing skin conditions caused by biting insects.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

Midges breed near stagnant water. As they don’t fly more than a few hundred metres from their breeding area, housing or paddocking your horses more than 500 metres from those areas will reduce their exposure to the flies.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies.

Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites.
