The Horse Report

Exciting new Arena Saddles Sportsmanship Award Nominations are open for the Arena Saddles Sportsmanship Award. Creating the Arena Saddles Sportsmanship Award is a way for Arena Saddles to say thank you and give back to the incredible equestrian community. The foundation of this award is to honour equestrians who put others before themselves and display acts of selflessness, kindness and integrity that our equestrian community is known for. Arena Saddles are on the look out for an everyday equestrian who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship and who is deserving of recognition. The ideal recipient of the Arena Saddles Sportsmanship Award isn't necessarily the equestrian who wins the most ribbons or has the fanciest horse. The recipient should:  display exceptional sportsmanship, such as handling victory and defeat with grace and dignity,  treat everyone with fairness and courtesy, and  set an example by creating a positive and encouraging environment. As a reward for their positive influence and sportsmanship, the recipient will receive an Arena saddle of their choice and five runners-up will receive a beautiful Arena Saddle Bag as a recognition prize. Arena saddles are classically crafted from European leather. As a discerning rider, you will appreciate the elegance and quality of Arena Saddles. Whether competing in dressage, tackling a challenging course of jumps or riding the trails, you will feel supported through the exceptional close contact and complete adjustability for your horse's unique confor-

mation. Thoughtful touches, such as the ergonomic stirrup bar and softly padded knee inserts for comfort, are just some of the reasons you love your Arena saddle. Do you know a remarkable equestrian who deserves to be rewarded for their selflessness and positive influence within the equestrian community with an Arena saddle?

Maybe one of your friends generously offered you a helping hand or regularly provided advice to help you in your riding. If you know someone shining a light in your equestrian journey whom you wish to honour for their positive influence, nominate them before 30 November 2022. To make your nomination visit the Arena Saddles website here: https://bit.ly/3Ei2Nzx

The Horse Report

Quickly check your horse’s gut health By Dr NERIDA MCGILCHRIST While it’s not the most refined subject, your horse’s manure can tell you a lot. How watery, soft, formed, unformed or hard it is can give you some insight into what is going on inside that gut. Use our quick check guide to assess your horse’s manure and see if it is telling you all is well… or if there is something not right within the gut. Note that the color of the manure will change as what the horse is eating changes. So don’t be too distracted by colour, look instead at the form. SCORE 1 – WATERY DIARRHEA

SCORE 1 Is this normal? Something is seriously wrong in your horse’s gut. You need to contact your veterinarian immediately. What causes this? There are many causes of watery diarrhea. Please work with your veterinarian to achieve a sound diagnosis How to fix it: Follow directions from your veterinarian.

SCORE 2

Is this normal? Not normal. What causes this? You should work with your veterinarian to diagnose the cause of your horse’s diarrhea. How to fix it: Follow directions from your veterinarian. Sand and dirt accumulation in the gut can be a common cause of diarrhea in horses. If this is the diagnosis, you can try using psyllium to clear this from the gut. SCORE 3 – SOFT, UNFORMED Is this normal? This is a not a normal consistency for horse manure and indicates that something is not right in the gut, particularly the hindgut. The ratio of water to fibre is too high in the manure. What causes this? There are many possible causes, including: Hindgut Acidosis. If your horse is being fed unprocessed grains, large amounts of starch will be fermented in the hindgut. Or your horse may have large amounts of fructan entering the hindgut from cereal forages. The fermenting starch and/or fructan upsets microbial balance

and large amounts of acid accumulate. The acid damages the gut wall, bacteria die and overall health is compromised. Sand or dirt accumulation. Sand/dirt irritates the gut wall. Too little fibre. When there is not enough fibre in the diet, there is not enough fibre to hold onto water in the hindgut, leading to soft manure. High moisture, low fibre pasture. Lush, young pasture is high in water and low in fibre. Horses may also eat bark, chew on fence posts or other objects to try and increase fibre intake. How to fix it: The solution here depends on the cause. Hindgut Acidosis, if grains must be fed, use only cooked grains. Feed grains in small meals (no more than 1 kg/meal for a 500 kg horse. Only use grains when absolutely necessary. Sand or dirt, use psyllium husk to remove from the hindgut. Too little fibre, reassess your horse’s diet and make sure you are feeding a minimum of 1.5% of BW per day in quality forage. High moisture, low fibre pasture. If your horse is grazing lush pasture, provide free choice access to a high fibre hay.  continued page 9

Is this normal? This is a normal consistency for manure and indicates your horse is well hydrated and consuming sufficient fibre in the diet. This firm, formed consistency is common when horses have access to hay or dry pasture. SCORE 6 – HARD, DRY

SCORE 6

www.feedxl.com

Is this normal? This is a not a normal consistency for horse manure and indicates that this horse’s water intake is low and dehydration may be present. Or it indicates that indigestible fibre intake is too high. What causes this? Reduced water intake may be due to: Water that is too cold, dirty, unpalatable or unfamiliar water (common when traveling) Electrolyte (particularly sodium) deficiency. When sodium levels drop in the blood, horses reduce water intake. Water placed in an area the horse does not feel safe drinking. Stress/anxiety, common when travelling Excessive indigestible fibre intake may be seen when horses have access to straw or other similar mature forage like old, dry pasture as their major forage source. How to fix it: Increase water intake and reduce indigestible fibre intake. Ways to do this are: Keep water so clean that you would drink it yourself. Take familiar water or a familiar flavour with you when traveling. Add more salt to your horse’s feed. Place water in a place your horse feels safe. Keep your horse with a buddy who drinks well to reduce stress/anxiety. Feed limited amounts of forage (limiting to 1% of bodyweight where hard manure is an issue). Use more digestible forage to provide the remainder of your horses required forage. intake.

The Horse Report

Are You Wasting Money on Vitamins ? By LARISSA BILSTON, BAgrSc (Hons 1), Animal Nutritionist, Farmalogic You may be wasting hard-earned cash if you're feeding mature (but not old), healthy pleasure horses a multi-vitamin supplement when they're grazing good pasture. And if you're not feeding enough vitamins to hard-working, breeding, growing or hayreliant horses you can expect sub-optimal performance and might be in for some unwanted vet bills. What are vitamins anyway? Vitamins are ‘organic substances that are necessary for correct nutrition in plants and animals’. Although they're only needed in small quantities, vitamins play essential roles throughout the body. For example, many vitamins are needed to produce the coenzymes that regulate many metabolic processes and some are antioxidants which support immune function and muscle recovery after exercise. Although all horses need to have minerals added to balance their diets (especially copper, zinc, selenium, iodine and often calcium, phosphorous, salt and magnesium), they don't all need added vitamins. When fed at levels above requirements, excess vitamins can reach toxic levels or will just make expensive urine. Mature horses in light work usually get all the vitamins they need from their feed, especially if they're grazing plentiful, good quality, green leafy pasture. The exception is vitamin E which, although present in pasture, is frequently not at high enough levels to meet the horse's requirements. Most horses need a vitamin E supplement, and many owners also choose to add biotin as an aid to hoof growth and quality. Growing, hard-working, breeding, sick, stressed and aged horses will benefit from broad-spectrum vitamin supplementation. Where do vitamins come from? Horses are able to manufacture some vitamins, some are produced by the microbes living within their gut and others are obtained from food sources. Fresh green grass is rich in beta-carotene

(the pre-cursor of vitamin A) as well as vitamins E, K and biotin. Dried feeds such as grains and newly-made hay contain vitamin D, E and B-group vitamins. As hay ages, vitamin levels rapidly decline. Horses synthesize vitamin C from glucose in the liver. Vitamin D (calciferol) is produced in the skin when pro-vitamins are exposed to ultraviolet radiation (usually by sunlight). The microbes within the large colon contribute to the production and absorption of vitamin K and the B-group vitamins thiamin, riboflavin and biotin. When to feed vitamins to Horses Vitamin A Vitamin A is important for vision, immune response to infection and in fertility. It plays roles in regulating cell development via gene expression and protecting epithelial surfaces including skin and gut linings. Horses eating more hay than green grass can become vitamin A deficient, since levels of this vitamin decline rapidly in stored hay. As a fat-soluble vitamin, it is best absorbed when the feed naturally contains a small amount of fat (e.g. green grass, copra or oilseed meals such as canola or soy) or contains added oil. B-Group Vitamins Many B-group vitamins are critical for energy metabolism.

Thiamin (B1) is needed for carbohydrate metabolism and a healthy nervous system. Riboflavin (B2) supports energy metabolism and the production of immune cells. Niacin (B3) plays a role in energy transfer in the body and Pantothenic acid (B5) is needed for the breakdown of fats and for making proteins. Pyridoxine (B6) is important for healthy immune and nervous systems and is involved in the development of muscle tissue and haemoglobin. Biotin (vitamin B7) is a vital component of many enzymes important in fatty acid synthesis, protein generation, growth and glucose metabolism. Folate (B9) is important in red blood cell manufacture, and in cell division and growth. Cobalamin (B12) works with folate to promote red blood cell production and is also involved in metabolism of carbohydrates, fat and protein. Green feed, grains and the microbes in a healthy horse gut produce many of the Bgroup vitamins that a resting horse requires. The physical stress of hard work, growing, illness or transport can kill off large numbers of benefical gut microbes, reducing vitamin B production just when the need for these vitamins is highest.  continued page 11

Equine Health Feature

The Horse Report

Consult a nutritionist for a diet analysis  From Page 10 Hard working horses are frequently fed more hay and have little access to green leafy grass so it is good practice to supplement B-group vitamins to horses who are: * Working hard * Travelling and competing * Growing or breeding * Injured or unwell * Undergoing stress or anxiety. Prebiotics and probiotics, especially live yeast, fed to horses in heavy work or during times of stress, supports survival of the gut microbes that produce vitamins for their host animal. Vitamin C Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is central to the water-soluble antioxidant system in the horse, needed to prevent damage caused by free radicals and to regenerate vitamin E. Unlike humans, horses make their own vitamin C supplies in the liver but it is advisable to supplement additional vitamin C to horses in heavy work or over the age of 15. Vitamin D Vitamin D helps maintain blood calcium levels and aids calcium and phosphorus absorption from the intestine. It also helps mobilize stored calcium and has an indirect impact on bone mineralization. Horses exposed to sunlight produce adequate supplies of vitamin D in their skin. Vitamin E Vitamin E is the most important fat soluble antioxidant protecting cell membranes throughout the body. Vitamin E is also critical for fertility, cell generation and gene expression and some aspects of the immune system. All horses need supplementary vitamin E. Vitamin shortages are highest when hay or grains form a large part of the diet because vitamins are most abundant in fresh plants. By the time hay has been stored 12 months, it will have lost virtually all of its vitamin E. As a fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin E is best absorbed when the feed naturally contains a small amount of fat (e.g. green grass, copra or oilseed meals such as canola or soy) or contains added oil. Vitamin K Vitamin K is required for blood clotting and

Your horse will need additional feed and a supplement when workload increases, bone health and usually sourced from fresh green plants and microbial synthesis within the gut. Vitamin K is frequently added to vitamin supplements for breeding, growing and hard-working horses. As a fat-soluble vitamin, it is best absorbed when the feed naturally contains a small amount of fat (e.g. green grass, copra or oilseed meals such as canola or soy) or contains added oil. Multi-Vitamin Supplements for Horses Vitamins and minerals can be supplemented through either a pre-mixed feed or a balancer pellet or powder. Whilst a well-formulated pre-mixed feed can provide all your horse's vitamin and mineral needs when fed at the recommended rates, be aware that short-falls will exist if you reduce the amount fed. Feeds smaller than the recommended rate must be topped up with an appropriate rate of a balancer pellet or powdered supplement. One of the advantages of relying on a good quality vitamin and mineral powder mixed in an unfortified feed or concentrated balancer pellet is that you don't need to recalculate supplement requirements every time you change how much hard feed you give. Provided you choose a supplement with well-balanced mineral levels and enough vitamin E, you can save money by avoiding the excess vitamins if and when your horse doesn't need them. The friendliest vitamin and mineral supplements on the market will list their ingredients "per serve" rather than "per kilogram" to

make your calculations easier. Don't be fooled into thinking that the product with 15 mg of biotin per 60 g serve contains less than the product with a label that reads: Biotin 100 mg/kg. In a 60 gram serve, 100 mg/kg would equate to 100 x 60/1000 = 6 mg per 60 grams. Watch the units carefully when comparing levels in different feeds and supplements. One milligram (mg) is one thousandth of a gram. One microgram (mcg or μg) is one millionth of a gram and one thousandth of a milligram. A feed or supplement with 15 mcg of biotin contains one thousand times less biotin than one with 15 mg per serve. 1,000 IU is not the same as 1,000 mg. The levels of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) may be measured in International Units (IU), a unit designed to account for differences in biological activity of the different chemical forms of each vitamin. For example, one IU of natural vitamin E (dalpha-tocopherol) weighs 0.67 mg while the synthetic form (dl-alpha-tocopherol) contains 0.9 mg of vitamin E per IU. Take-home message: All horses need supplementary minerals and vitamin E. Healthy, mature spelling horses don't usually need more vitamins than they can get from eating plentiful green leafy grass. When horses eat more hay than grass or are breeding, growing, working hard, sick or injured they need a supplementary supply of multi-vitamins. Read product labels carefully to ensure your horses are getting their recommended daily intake of vitamins.

BILATERAL HIND CANNON RADIOGRAPHS of X XXXX XXXXXX Initially taken on 14th April 2021. Initial radiographs showed a 32mm longitudinal non displaced left mid cannon saucer fracture extending 6mm into the dorsal cortex and a 44mm longitudinal displaced fracture right mid cannon 5.5mm in depth mid dorsal cortex associated proximally with a 27mm x 6.5mm secondary fracture as below. Initially, surgical removal was recommended of the R H fracture fragment. A second series was taken on 17th May and third series on 14th June as above. Both fractures have attached and integrated with the parent bone with minor surface enthesophyte formation and periosteal activity evident. RECOMMENDATIONS: Surgery is no longer recommended; however, the colt should be monitored carefully for any swelling on either cannon. Prognosis for full return to racing is good. COMMENTS: Fractures of this nature usually require surgical removal. Resolution of cortical fractures of this size without surgical intervention is not expected. BONE GOLD SUPPLEMENTATION WAS INITIATED ON 14TH APRIL 21 AT 3 X SCOOPS/DAY AND SHOULD BE CONTINUED. Please do not hesitate to contact Dr Andrew Watts B.V.Sc if you have any further queries

The Horse Report

Windgalls can be very common ailments By DAVID LOVELL BSVS Splints and windgalls are very common ailments that horses sustain. When owner's first see a swelling on their horse's lower leg, the initial reaction might be to panic - "Oh my god" - what is it, will it take ages to mend, will it cost me a fortune or potentially affect his future? Don't panic. Fortunately the very vast majority of windgalls are of little consequence, other than a cosmetic blemish and will have little effect on the performance of the horse. What are they? A windgall, (technically correct name being tendosynovitis), is swelling of the digital tendon sheath - a sterile fluid-filled sleeve covering the flexor tendons over the back of the fetlock joint. The flexor tendons themselves are extremely critical and sensitive structures and injury to them is serious. A tendon is a structure that starts as a muscle mass which has the ability to contract and transmit forces that move the object to which it is attached. Obviously the horse has very long skinny legs with large muscle masses higher up on the body. The flexor tendon serves as a "rope" to connect the muscle mass to the bones of the lower leg. When the muscle contracts, the tendon moves upward and "flexes" the joints of the lower limb. The sheath is a sleeve that surrounds the tendon and enables the tendon to slide up and down. The sheath has a relatively tough outer case, and a "synovial" lining which has cells that secrete fluid which serves as a lubricant. The superficial and deep flexor tendons originate as muscles above the knee and the hock, become tendons at the level of these joints and passage down the back of the leg to attach to the pastern and pedal bones. Obviously at the level of the fetlock, they have to "go round a corner" to continue their progression. Most significantly, everyone has seen videos of horses in motion and can appreciate the tremendous range of motion the fetlock goes through, and in particular how low the back of the fetlock sinks at impact and weight bearing. Obviously this is going to put enormous tension and stress on the tendon structures. Nature has adapted to help protect the tendons by evolving a much thicker and stronger annular ligament structure around the back of the fetlock to help hold the tendons in place and support them as they are stretched. For the same reasons, the synovial sheath is also more thickened and reactive compared to sheaths in other areas of the horse. A very important feature to understand is that the synovial sheath is dynamic and very active. The fluid secreted, is not just a "pool" of stagnant liquid. It is continually being turned over by secretion and absorption, and when all is in balance, the rate of secretion equals the rate of absorption and the normal appearance of the lower limb prevails. If however the rate of secretion increases and exceeds the absorption, extra and excess fluid accumulates and the sheath starts to swell. The rate of secretion increases whenever there is any inflammation in any of the integrated structures. When one appreciates the absolutely enorPage 16

mous forces and stresses applied to the back of the fetlock region by a 500kg animal travelling at often quite high speeds, it does not take much to cause damage or inflammation. Most often, the damage is relatively minor and is associated with vagaries in such thinks as the conformation and balance of the bones and joints, in particular hoof imbalances, and irregular surfaces that the horse invariably has to travel over. Often these deviations are relatively minor but over time, create "wear and tear" to the soft tissue structures, in particular the tendon sheath, and there is a progressive gradual increase in fluid production and an insidious increase in the size of the pouch, eventually resulting in noticeable "windgalls". They are the result of the way the horse moves and individuals are all different. Some horses are prone, others resistant, to the development of the most common windgall because of their biomechanics of movement. Almost all of these horses are not lame and the blemish is purely cosmetic. There are some more problematic situations that can occur. Damage to either of the tendons in any form will dramatically increase the inflammation resulting in very high volumes of fluid production. The tendon injury may cause lameness, as may the turgidity of the high pressure of the massive secretion in the tight sheath which in itself will cause lameness. A very common development is stretching and tearing of the previously mentioned annular ligament that traverses horizontally across the back of the fetlock. These can be very painful. The synovial sheath and the annular ligament are part and parcel of the same structure and so a lot of fluid is produced, and often the ligament swells and increases in sized, sometimes "pinching" the tendons causing more trouble. An even worse situation is infection in the synovial sheath, usually the result of a puncture wound, and these are devastating, and difficult to deal with requiring urgent veterinary attention. So, what do we do? Hopefully I have already explained the great majority of windgalls are a result of the way the horse uses the leg. Windgalls are very rare

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com -

in horses that live in the paddock and are never ridden. Things have to change, and there are usually a multitude of factors in the ecosystem around the use and movement of the horse. When I look at a horse for a client with a windgall, the most important part of the assessment is a detailed exploration of all the factors relating to the use of the horse. By far the most useful and common adjustment we can make is in the way the horse is trimmed and shod and almost always there are things we can change and adjust. Each horse is different but most changes will involve improving the balance of the foot, shortening the breakover, and increasing the heel support. The surface the horse works on is also very important. Very hard surfaces are going to exacerbate the effects of the small imbalances that may be present. Equally, deep sand surfaces can be wrong as the deeper the surface, the more work the tendons have to do to achieve liftoff and breakover. There are so many factors to consider, it is impossible to cover. Suffice to say, everything must be assessed and adjustments considered. Medical therapy can be very useful as it can markedly reduce inflammation. Phenylbutazone, and other anti-inflammatories will all help. In particular, injection of cortisone into the sheath can be dramatic. Cortisone stops the local inflammation and virtually ceases the secretion, absorption continues and the sheath goes down. It is critical to realise that if the factors that caused the windgall in the first place remain, the inflammation will continue as soon as the drugs wear off. Every owner invariably wants to "drain" the fluid. This on its own is a complete waste as the fluid will instantly be re-secreted and the swelling return. Surgery can be very useful in those cases where there is damage to the tendon or annular ligament. Careful ultrasound examination is very important to attempt to determine what damage may be present, and if there appears to be a lot of sonographic change in the tendons and sheath, surgery is very important in removing damaged tissue and allowing healing.

The benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar Farmers and horse trainers have been using Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) to improve and then maintain their horses’ well-being for years. It has an alkalizing effect which puts the horse in a slightly alkalized state. The benefits of this are legendary and its use over hundreds of years have proven beneficial.. It is a valuable tonic if taken internally or applied externally. Top 10 uses for Apple Cider Vinegar 1. Natural insect control When horses are fed ACV daily in their feed, it causes higher levels of thiamine (vitamin B1) to be excreted through their skin, and thus the optimum levels of B vitamins in their system discourages insects including flies and mosquitoes 2. Improves digestion ACV works to acidify the stomach for better digestion and absorption of minerals and help protect your horse from bacteria, parasites and water-borne diseases, and ulcers. Research has also shown that it can slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, which is helpful for those founder-prone ponies/horses that are sensitive to sugar. 5. Helps prevent intestinal enteroliths An alkaline environment in the horse's digestive tract can cause intentional stones to grow to the point of causing dangerous obstructions. The acidifying effect of ACV helps dissolve and prevent enteroliths.

4. Mane and tail conditioner Adding one cup of ACV to a bucket of water for the final rinse of your horse's mane and tail will leave it feelingly incredibly smooth and removes any extra soap residue. 5. Disguise water while travelling If your horse is accustomed to the taste of ACV, bring some along on your next road trip and they'll happily drink unfamiliar water. 6. Wound treatment Spraying fungus, burns, skin infections and other wounds with diluted ACV is a great way to speed healing time by helping to help keep bacteria and insects away. 7. Ease arthritis symptoms Both horses and humans alike have benefited from ACV to help control arthritis joint pain and stiffness.

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com -

8. Treat hoof problems Use apple cider vinegar to treat thrush add 1/4 cup of ACV to a bucket of water to soak a hoof or use it undiluted in a spray bottle. 9. Weed killer If you don't like spraying harmful chemicals then ACV is a great spray alternative. 10. Clean blankets and pads Add some ACV to the rinse water for your saddle pads, blankets and polo wraps. It will help remove soap residue. A benefit for thinskinned horses that are prone to irritation. Recipe for homemade raw Apple Cider Vinegar fly spray. Mix 2 cups of raw apple cider vinegar with 2 cups of water and add 2-3 drops of either lavender or eucalyptus essential oils to make a natural insect repellent spray for horses.

Endocrine conditions of the horse Diagnosis: PPID- Blood test measuring ACTH, low dose Dexamethasone Suppression Test (DST) to measure cortisol levels. EMS - Blood glucose and insulin level measurements, Oral Sugar Test (OST), Insulin Tolerance Test (ITT). IR - intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT), Oral Sugar Test (OST).

By Karyn Campbell Naturopath and Equine Herbalist ©Hi Form Aust 2022 The Endocrine System of the horse consists of the reproductive organs, pancreas, pineal body, thyroid, adrenal glands, pituitary, and parathyroid glands. So, what does the endocrine system do? The endocrine glands release hormones (chemical messengers) to provide internal communications into the bloodstream and allows them to travel to the cells then on to other areas of the body to perform their designated tasks. Horses can develop disorders when the glands either over secrete or under secrete hormones, this is also the case if a tumour develops on the organ or gland. Horses can develop disorders such as Cushing’s Syndrome (PPID) Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction, Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), Insulin Resistance (IR). Cushing’s: Cushing’s disease is a result of a benign tumour on the pituitary gland. This will result in increased release of several hormones, with the most common being ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone). The thing about ACTH is that it will trigger the adrenal glands to produce more cortisol which is a form of steroid. The clinical signs that are associated with Cushing’s are usually due to the over production of cortisol. Cushing's Disease can affect any breed of horse and typically affects horses greater

ponies that are 15 years of age and younger. EMS clinical signs are increased fat deposits around the base of tail, ribs, neck and crest. A history of laminitis and insulin dysregulation.

Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS): EMS is a disorder that is associated with the inability to regulate insulin levels in the blood. It usually will affect ponies, donkeys, Arabians, warmbloods and horses that have the ability to survive harsh conditions. When these horses are kept in an environment where they have access to high carbohydrates with minimum to little exercise their calorie intake is quite large. This generally affects horses and

Insulin Resistance (IR): IR in horses is where there is a significant increase in insulin levels within the blood. The insulin can no longer stimulate tissues to uptake glucose correctly. The pancreas will produce more insulin to compensate to move the glucose in to the cells to prevent hyperglycaemia. IR clinical signs are abnormal weight gain, loss of muscle tone or stamina, excessive water consumption, colic and laminitis.

Treatment: PPID- medication Pergolide and occasionally Cyproheptdine and Trilostane. Dietary management with low starch and sugar supplemented with protein, minerals and vitamins. EMS - Modification of diet in the form of (NSC) non-structural carbohydrate restriction so reduced calories. Increase in exercise, supplements to provide minerals and vitamins. IR - The same as EMS. Modification of diet in the form of (NSC) non-structural carbohydrate restriction so reduced calories. Increase in exercise, supplements to provide minerals and vitamins. The medication Metformin for horse's sensitive to insulin.

Women triumph as Madame Pommery wins Guineas Supplied by MAGIC MILLIONS Madame Pommery proved to be a fitting winner in the recent Group One feature on Caulfield's traditional Ladies Day when she upstaged a quality field in the Thousand Guineas. Owned by 20 women across Australia, Madame Pommery skipped across the wet track, scoring a win over Revolutionary Miss as Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduates ran 1-2. The Chris Waller-trained daughter of No Nay Never benefited from a clever ground saving ride by James McDonald to score a length and a half success. Waller's Assistant Trainer and Racing Manager, Charlie Duckworth said he was almost lost for words after the win. "She got a gem of a ride," Duckworth said. "She did no work early and she let down pretty impressively. "It's incredible (for her) to take out a Group One - massive credit to the filly and it's just awesome to be a part of it. The Horse Report

The power to connect is in the pause By TANJA KRAUS Haste is easily one of the top issues that I see with horses and their humans. If we take the time to watch horses in the paddock, going about their day to day lives, they really don't do anything quickly, unless there is a perceived threat or they are playing. With the exception of those 2 things, horses pretty much go about their business at a snail’s pace and much of the time with no agenda and no time frame. Humans on the other hand usually do things at a fairly quick pace, with an agenda and many things to 'fit' into their allocated time frame. For example, we may arrive at the paddock before or after work, either trying to get stuff done before we have to head off, or before the sun goes down. In that time we may have to unrug, groom, saddle, ride, unsaddle, re-rug and feed. So we are trying to get things done efficiently, often rapidly, and we end up never truly being present in our interaction. The horse becomes a tool for our

Enjoy the time you have with your horse, don’t rush it. enjoyment, and we become a for an hour or so, until we leave discomfort for him - something him alone once again. that he must endure or tolerate This is because you and your

horses are operating on two different energy frequencies. Humans exist in a constant state of 'to do' and horses live in a constant state of 'nowhere to be, nothing to do'. When we start to become conscious of our energy, and mindfully add pause to our day, the horses are drawn to us. The simple act of not immediately approaching your horse when you arrive at the paddock will provide pause and space for the horse to connect. Kind of like a knock at the door. I don't like people 'dropping in' to my house unexpectedly, but it would be much worse if they just walked in without knocking. A knock at least provides me some space to gather thoughts, finish what I'm doing and 'change gears'. It's the same at the paddock - if you arrive and walk straight out to your horse, it's like not knocking - it doesn't give him time to mentally shift to your arrival. Adding these pauses into your interactions will get your energies more in sync and your horse will begin enjoying your time together.

Boyd's bid for 10th title on course in Lyon Supplied by EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Fresh from winning his sixth Four-in-Hand World Championship a month ago, Australia’s Boyd Exell set out to take a 10th FEI Driving World Cup title by emphatically leading from the very start to win the first leg, with former champions Ijsbrand Chardon (Netherlands) second and countryman Koos de Ronde third. With French events bookending the 2022-23 series, the tally has started in deciding who goes to February’s final in Bordeaux. Gaining a wild card entry – which means his result won’t go into the qualification points pot – Boyd unequivocally showed why he is so hard to beat. It was an early start on Saturday morning for Competition One. With five confirmed entries (whose points count towards the series ranking) and two wild cards, it was Benjamin Aillaud who opened, followed by Boyd, then Ijsbrand, Jérôme Voutaz (Switzerland), Dries Degrieck (Belgium), Koos and Chester Weber (USA). Still fine tuning their performances, all knocked balls but the order for the second round was set. All seven came out again and the times from round one rolled on as the clocks started and they tacked a slightly reduced version of Jeroen Houterman’s (Netherlands) 13-obstacle course. Retaining his superb form from Pratoni,

Page 30

Ijsbrand put in a blazing run to be the first to go clear. But the harder Boyd is pushed, the better he performs, and with his trusted team of Emma Olsson – currently nominated for the Cavalor FEI Best Groom Award in this year’s FEI Awards – and long term supporter Hugh Scott-Barrett behind him, he not only drove clear, but smashed the time, shaving 4.41 seconds off Ijsbrand to finish first on day one. Competition Two on Sunday morning saw the slate wiped clean and all started on zero again, but Saturday’s standings gave the running order. Unlike the previous day, only the top three came back for what was the fourth run over

the course for them, with the ‘F’ gates removed from the marathon-type obstacles numbers 5 and 9. Although he knocked an early ball, Boyd’s 143.97 was fast enough to give him a cushion and he retained the top spot. However, in the finale, Boyd found another stratospheric gear, his streamlined horses worked as one and kept their momentum throughout, to end on 140.82. Stating how delighted he was with his horses Boyd said, “I was thrilled to get the invitation as a wild card. We’ve got three competitions in a row and although the horses are fit, it’s the competitions that get them competition fit.”

Top showjumpers return to Boneo Park Supplied by BONEO PARK & EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA All eyes in the sport of Jumping in Australia will once again turn to Boneo in Victoria, where the 2022 Pryde’s EasiFeed Australian Jumping Championships will be held in November. This will be a welcome return to their traditional spot on the calendar after the 2021 Championships were delayed until February this year. Situated on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, Boneo Park Equestrian Centre has been the home to the past three Australian Jumping Championships and is excited to once again be hosting competitors from around the country in what will be a five-day Jumping extravaganza. Pryde's EasiFeed have once again come on board as generous sponsors of the Championships and with action taking place in three separate arenas, not to mention over $100,000 in prize money, the excitement is not to be missed. In total, there are more than 740 horses and 410 riders entered to compete in a range of Australian titles, including:  The Verband Holsteiner Germany Future Stars Championship;  The Kiernan Plant Hire Mini Prix Championship;  The Racing Hearts Speed Championship;  The 4-Cyte Children’s Championship;  The Horseland Junior Championship;  The Racing Hearts Young Rider Championship; and  The Pryde’s EasiFeed Senior Championship. An Off-The-Track Championship will also be held, sponsored by the Racing Victoria Off-The-Track Program, which is dedicated to the welfare of retired racing thoroughbreds. The program also incorporates a range of minor titles and nonchampionship height classes. The Senior Championship will bring together for a memorable competition the very best riders in the country including Olivia Hamood - 2021 Australian

Senior Champion, Tom McDermott – 2019 Australian Senior Champion and Amber Fuller - 2018 Australian Senior Champion. Reflecting on her 2021 Championship success, Olivia Hamood said winning the Australian Senior Title last year was a dream come true. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to win ever since I was a Junior,” Olivia said. “I’ve been runner up in Juniors, Young Riders and Seniors but to actually win it was just surreal. “Most definitely the highlight of my career so far. “I’m excited to be heading back to Boneo this year to give it my best shot again, we haven’t had the most ideal prep but it’s the one show on the calendar each year that everyone wants to attend and everyone wants to perform well at.” It is not only competitors that are well-catered for at Boneo Park, as the experience for spectators will also be fantastic. Along with the world class Jumping to enjoy, there will be an extensive trade village and a range of quality food and drink outlets. A day out at Boneo Park is an unforgettable experience. The on-site restaurant, Arilla, will be open for lunch and dinner throughout the Championships. Incorporating fresh local and homegrown produce with an emphasis on delicious flavours, dining at this top-class venue is truly a special experience. Flexi-Fibre Fibre provides root structure, similar to grass roots in turf, to existing or new sand-based riding surfaces. Fibre improves the surface stability, therefore the horse will work ‘on top’ of the surface rather than ‘through’ it. Our Flexi Fibre is a mixture of polypropylene, polyester and nylon Fibres which are the base material to all of our surfaces worldwide and similar to all other top surface suppliers. Flax Seed Oil provides the richest (almost 60%) natural source of Omega 3, an essential fatty acid (EFA) which is not generally present in equine foods. Like all animals, horses cannot manufacture this essential fatty acid which is so important for their overall health.

The Horse Report

EQUINE & CANINE PATENT FORMULAS Following the success of HOOF GOLD and increasing demand from veterinarians, Farriers and clients we embarked on producing our next generation of formulas. NEW Equine & Canine Range TM

We are proud to announce the release of our two new patent formulations, BONE GOLDTM and COAT GOLDTM in both the Equine and Canine presentations. Our Formulas have been granted Innovative Patents as they present as totally unique in the market and are clearly differentiated from all other supplements. Our new products have been produced with the same attention to detail with the highest quality pharmaceutical grade ingredients manufactured in an Australian GMP approved site. Unlike most other supplements made in feed barns or pet food factories, this guarantees the quality and quantity of each ingredient in all our products. VET GOLDTM products are made in the same laboratories as many Veterinary Pharmaceuticals with the highest quality control standards in the Australian Veterinary industry. Our products are developed with specialist bio-engineers focused on ensuring maximising product effectiveness balancing ingredient ratios and particle sizes to optimise physiological uptake, digestibility and stability.

Extensive research and development in conjunction with clinical testing and observation by Veterinary Surgeons on clinical equine and canine cases is conducted on all our products. Dr Watts has lectured at Equine Veterinary Association meetings, at the University of Queensland and runs regular remedial Equine podiatry workshops in conjunction with Veterinary colleagues and Farriers in addition to running a busy clinical Equine Practice. VET GOLDTM is a family owned Australian business that takes pride in all our product range with comprehensive personal support with any questions answered directly by Dr Andrew Watts and his stoic knowledgeable partner Mel Watts. Please feel welcome to contact us anytime, we look forward to personally providing any technical or medical support or information regarding our products.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin. These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
