Playing God colt tops record day in Perth “He's just athletic, the sire's got stamina and the mum led them up in the Winterbottom and just got rolled by a multiple Group 1 winner. She was fast. “You only have to see him to know he's a standout. He cost $100,000 more than we wanted to pay but that's the market.” Across the afternoon and evening of day one of the sale over $12.7 million was traded on 140 lots sold at a record average price of $91,175. The clearance rate also rose sharply on 2021, currently sitting on 85 per cent and expected to grow overnight. “It was a super day's selling,” Magic Millions WA Manager David Houston said. “The fact we've have to overcome all these obstacles makes it even more impressive. “We've been locked out and isolated and had to transfer the sale dates - but we still had the support of not only vendors but also the buying bench to get such a sensational result.” Houston said he was proud of the way the local buying bench invested in the local sale - buying all but five lots during the Book One sale. “There was competition from the east but the locals were too strong,” he said. “The Westspeed bonus money is sensational, but even horses that weren't bonus qualified were well sought after.”

Supplies by MAGIC MILLIONS A colt by Playing God topped proceedings while records were smashed across a sensational 2022 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale. Leading local bloodstock agent John Chalmers outlasted former jockey turned trainer Ryan Hill to secure the day's top seller late in the session for $330,000. The colt was one of four yearlings to sell for $300,000 or more during a day in which local buyers helped take the sale to heights never before seen in the state. The average and median prices smashed previous records, while the gross soared over 50 per cent on the sale 12 months earlier in the Swan Valley. Chalmers, who purchased nine lots on Day One for $865,000, snared his prized selection of the auction - the Playing God colt from Moodometer for $330,000 from the Willaview Farm draft. "He's a big, scopey colt," Chalmers said. "He's a full brother to a stakes placegetter and the cross works. "I won't disclose who the owner is, but he really wanted him." The result was an incredible one for the team from Willaview Park, who are presenting their second draft at this year's Perth Yearling Sale. "We are ecstatic to say the least," a beaming Claire Williamson of Willaview said. "We knew he was a beautiful colt, but we didn't think he

would make that sort of money. "But since he was at the sales people kept pulling him out of the box and they just loved him. “We knew there were genuine strong bidders for him but it's a really, really nice surprise - we are stoked. “He's literally a machine - a really outstanding looking horse really a one-off type.” Earlier in the sale Mark Pilkington, bidding online, went to $320,000 to secure the first foal of group winner Samovare by Russian Revolution from the Amelia Park Racing and Breeding draft. “I loved her proven and current black type pedigree," Pilkington said. “She (Samovare) was a high class mare and Russian Revolution has sired a couple of

high class fillies in recent times. “She was very well recommended by many at the sale as a scopey filly that should love a mile at three. “It would be lovely if she found her way to the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas - after we ran third this year with Socialist who is by another promising young Newgate stallion. “She's a BOBS filly which probably explains the number of Sydney trainers who have rung to put their hat into the ring.” Adam Durrant also went to $320,000 to buy the So You Think-Black in Time colt from the draft of Lynward Park Stud. “He was our target of the sale,” Durrant said. “We thought he was the colt of the sale and we ended up with him, so it was good.”

2022 FEI Youth Equestrian Games Sourced from FEI Following the postponement of the Youth Olympic to 2026, an alternative event, the FEI Youth Equestrian Games, will take place in Aachen, Germany from 28 June - 3 July, 2022. A total of 30 nations across six continents have been announced to participate in the FEI Youth Equestrian Games including Australia. This historic event for the youth equestrian community will showcase 30 athletes, aged between 15 and 18 years, who will compete in both Individual and Continental Team Jumping competitions. To fulfil the Youth Equestrian Games qualification criteria, athletes are required to complete two rounds of competition over the same pre-determined course, with identical distance and height specifications. Following the postponement of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Dakar, Senegal to 2026, the FEI requested the International Olympic Committee to organise an alternative event to be held in 2022. In agreement with the IOC, the Youth Equestrian Games, built around the same principles as

YOG, will be organised to avoid young athletes being negatively impacted by the absence of the Youth Olympic Games. The event will also host a Culture and Education Program established in cooperation with the IOC. Participants will compete under the same format used in previous editions of the YOG. Athletes will ride unfamiliar

OH NO, IT’S ITCHY SCRATCHY SEASON - STILL! A wetter than normal summer has meant more biting insects, mycotoxins and allergens present in the horse’s environment causing some horses to experience severe chronic itch. The successful management of an itchy horse relies on identifying the trigger of the itch. Many itchy horses are hypersensitive to the saliva of midges from the species Culicoides. Insect bites tend to cause itchiness around the head, eyes, ears, mane, topline and tail. Feed or pasture mycotoxins or contact allergies caused by hypersensitivity to pollen, sawdust often cause hives or the horse just begins to scratch. Neck threadworm, an infestation of the parasitic nematode, Onchocerca cervicalis, causes itch around the head, neck, chest, shoulders and underside of the belly. Pinworms and other intestinal parasites can cause itchy tails and hindquarters.

Nutritional Support for the Itchy Horse

Regardless of the initial trigger, itchy horses often have an overworked immune system so it is essential to provide correct mineral balance to ensure the immune system has adequate nutrients to function optimally. With 7 scientifically balanced formulas, the Equine Vit&Min range provides a mineral balancing solution to suit horses of all types.

The diet should also provide more omega-3 fatty acids than omega-6 to modulate the inflammatory processes in the immune system, and to improve the suppleness and strength of cell membranes. Marine-sourced omega-3s in the form of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are particularly noted for their role in skin health in dogs and horses during inflammatory reactions. Farmalogic Omega Balancer provides essential omega-3 oils in the three important forms horses need (DHA, EPA and ALA), making it n a superior option to linseeds (flax) or linseed oil alone. Page 10

www.thehorsereport.com www.thehorsereport.com

Feed additional antioxidants to help support immune function in hypersensitive horses. Farmalogic Melox contains a powerful blend of scientifically proven antioxidants.

Treating Horses with Neck Threadworm or Intestinal Parasites

Follow veterinary advice for the most appropriate monitoring and worming protocol to target parasites when they are in a susceptible stage of their lifecycle. It is advisable to follow any worming protocol with a course of probiotics to support a healthy gut microbial population. Farmalogic Rejuvenate comes in a convenient 300 gram pack to provide prebiotics and probiotics for at least 5 days.

The Horse Report Managing Horses with Mycotoxin load

Mycotoxin-associated itch is commonly seen during humid weather. Horses developing itch and/or signs of photosensitivity (which looks like severe sunburn especially on pink skin) and greasy heel, should be treated with a broad-spectrum toxin binder along with a zinc and antibiotic/antifungal cream. Farmalogic Grazaid offers the most complete and state-of-the art protection against mycotoxins available in Australia. Added to animal feed, it specifically targets non-adsorbable mycotoxins and detoxifies them in the gut safely and effectively. Grazaid also efficiently binds polar mycotoxins and endotoxins. xins

Managing Horses with Insect Bite Sensitivities Use rugs and masks to cover sensitive areas such as ears, neck and tail. Regular application of insecticides (permethrin of at least 1% concentration or 10g per litre) and insect repellents such as citronella and neem oil are also important. Physically remove the horse from the areas where biting insects like to live. Avoid paddocks with a dam or other sources of standing water. Use a stable with insect screens and a fan at dusk to reduce risk of insect bites when biting midges are most active. Use insect baits and attractants to reduce insect numbers in the horse’s environment.

Horses have more thinner, less greasy and more sensitive skin than humans so the treatment shampoos for horses are milder to avoid irritation. Horses with severe itch often require intervention with veterinary prescribed corticosteroid creams or injections to help break the itch cycle. Vets can recommend appropriate anti-bacterial or anti-fungal treatments to help clear up/soothe the skin. Limit shampoo treatment to once a week to avoid removing too many of the natural oils skin needs to prevent becoming too dry. Greasy creams can create a moist environment that encourages bacterial and fungal infections so only use creams which contain an effective antibacterial/anti-fungal agent. Whilst undergoing topical treatment, continue with correct nutrition to support the immune system and manage the environment to reduce the initial triggers to itch.

Seedy Toe – also known as White Line Disease By DAVID FARMILO It seems that weather conditions play a big part in the cause of Seedy Toe – lots of rain followed by warm days and good grass growth. These three things promote rapid hoof growth and very often that hoof growth can get way ahead of the maintenance trimming schedules; not only are the hooves growing fast but they are also quite soft and very flexible. The end result is flaring of the hoof wall, which causes it to separate from the laminae at the junction of the white line, hence the term White Line Disease. This condition allows dirt and foreign materials to be pushed up into that area of the sensitive tissue under the hoof wall which then causes aggravation, then inflammation, then infection followed by an abscess. Horses in flooded areas have even more problems with Seedy Toe if they cannot be moved to higher ground or into dry stabling or if the water is too deep for them to wear boots. The effect is always lameness, associated with heat in the hoof

Treatment of Seedy Toe requires the hoof wall to be pared away to expose the affected areas to the air, causing the infection to die.

wall and a much stronger digital pulse than normal. Sometimes the infection will migrate under the sole and erupt back out near the heels or alongside the frog, or sometimes the abscess will make a track upwards through the laminae and erupt out at the coronary band. When these abscesses have been resolved there is a capillary track left under the hoof wall; this is where the microscopic Seedy Toe bug develops, which thrives

in this closed area where there is no oxygen as it is an anaerobic bug (ie thrives on lack of air) and eats away the laminae under the hoof wall resulting in a cavity. Left unresolved, Seedy Toe has the potential to cause the whole hoof capsule to separate from the pedal bone, or put simply to drop off. When the abscess infection runs back under the sole it does not progress into Seedy Toe; the reason is that the sole continually

exfoliates and does not have a lamellar structure for the Seedy Toe bug to harbour in. However with an under-run infection from an abscess that has started from hoof wall separation at the white line area, part of or all of the sole and often the frog will lift off after the infection has passed and it may take two or three months to normalise. Resolving Seedy Toe requires the intervention of professional vet and farrier team plus full cooperation of the owner, and full knowledge of what causes Seedy Toe and how to control it and prevent it from reoccurring. Treatment should be to remove or debride all the separated hoof wall back to where there is no more visible parting of the laminae/white line/hoof wall and the area should then be left open to the air for a couple of weeks, which is time enough to kill the anaerobic Seedy Toe bug. We would never have to deal with Seedy Toe if we just learned to recognise its cause rather than looking for bandaids after the problem arises. The one cure for the anaerobic Seedy Toe bug is exposure to air.

Using electrolytes prior to work By ANTOINETTE FOSTER Dip Nut Equine Nutritional Therapist and Medical Herbalist ©2020 Hi Form Australia Pty Ltd

As horses lose a large amount of sodium, potassium and chloride plus smaller amounts of magnesium and calcium through sweating, it is very likely that supplementation prior to work may assist in reducing this loss. Research has suggested that by providing horses with electrolytes prior to travel or exercise may reduce the loss of electrolytes through sweat. In many cases we may not be aware as horses may not visibly be sweating. Providing horses with a hypotonic form of electrolytes could assist with the horses cooling system. This form of electrolyte has a lower concentration of carbohydrates and salt than blood. This means that they are absorbed into the bloodstream a lot faster to allow for quick hydration and electrolyte release. Unlike human sweat, when a horse sweats it includes a higher level of electrolytes than what is found in the circulating blood. Horses’ bodies must extract amounts of irons from the blood to produce a concentrated sweat. Therefore, horses must access cellular reserves in the skeletal muscles and other soft tissues to prevent this from running out. The study “Preloading large volume oral electrolytes: tracing fluid and ion fluxes in horses during rest, exercise and recovery,” was published by the Journal of Physiology in August 2021.

In this study researchers followed the path of radioactive electrolytes through horses bodies to see where they go from behind the solution enters the stomach. Low trace amounts of radioactive elements are not harmful to the horse, but they work as a marker that allows scientists to trace the path’s electrolytes take

Rehydrating with water is not enough  From page 14

Even when the horse’s coat is dry, sweat occurs As horse owners we often don’t realise how much fluid and electrolytes horses lose through sweating. A horse’s coat can look quite dry even after work because evaporation takes place very quickly, we may not be aware of how much is lost. Horses can lose up to 5 litres of fluid per hour and this includes around 4 litres from under the skin and approximately one litre from the respiratory tract. It is unlikely that we would notice this, not in actual volume. It is the evaporation of sweat that provides the cooling effect, seeing your horse dripping in sweat does not act to provide a cooling effect, in fact the horse is effectively sweating for nothing. Sweat ends up being produced in excess. It is very important to remember that using electrolytes prior to work could improve the outcome of horses sweating. Every horse will sweat to different degrees, and this will be dependent on the type of work that the horse is been asked to perform. Water Rehydrating the horse with

We don’t always realise how much fluid our horses have lost during their work.

water is not enough to do the job effectively, so it is essential that horses are provided additional supplementation, horses really require the correct electrolyte to maintain balance. It is certainly more important for high-performance horses that this is a day-to-day requirement. As the study suggests it appears to be enormously helpful to provide electrolytes prior to work, this will hopefully improve the horse’s performance and health and wellbeing long-term. Electrolytes are wonderful in

heat and to replenish minerals lost from sweat. Most electrolyte formulas contain a combination of calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride, potassium and magnesium. Using an electrolyte that is palatable is sometimes a bit of a challenge, but we do find that our ElectroPlus is very readily accepted by horses. Adding a good source of electrolytes in the morning feed is a perfect introduction to supporting the horse through his or her workload. This is useful if you are planning to work your horse in the morning. If you are working your horse later in the day, then you could provide a small feed a few hours prior to work. It is very likely that it will make quite a significant difference to the horse’s performance and electrolyte loss. The key to a good electrolyte supplement is in the ratio of these minerals, it is essential that they are supplied to the correct ratios to ensure optimal absorption and replenishment in the horse. It is essential to keep to the recommended dose of elec-

trolytes as an excessive amount can have negative effects on the horse. Our ElectroPlus formula contains all the minerals at correct dosages for absorption with the addition of selenium and Vitamin C to add to the acid buffering/alkalising effect of the supplement. ElectroPlus acts as a preventative from electrolyte imbalances because it ois a buffered acid/alkaline neutraliser, electrolyte and diuretic. Some misconceptions Adding salt to feed is a common misconception, it is sodium in one form or another. This can have a negative impact as it can dehydrate the cells rather than replenishing lost nutrients through sweat. If you think about it when we have a salty meal, we naturally need to drink more water, this is because the salt dehydrates our cells, the same works for horses. Theoretically you would be causing dehydration rather than treating it. If you require any further information or advice, please contact us enq@hiform.com.au or PM Hiform on Facebook.

Signs of mineral deficiency in horses By Dr NERIDA RICHARDS “What symptoms would I see if my horse was mineral deficient?” My answer… “That’s a really good question”… the actual answer is the reason why so many of us don’t have ‘problems’ with our horses, we have ‘disasters’. One of the things I love about being out and about at horse events is having real conversations with ‘real’ horse people about nutrition. I can sometimes forget that what is obvious to me is often not so obvious to others. So these types of questions really make me stop and focus on things from your perspective. This question was particularly brilliant because it highlights one of the huge issues in horse nutrition. And that is that ‘chronic long-term mineral deficiencies’ tend to go unnoticed until something truly goes horribly wrong. The best analogy I can give you is it is like white ants. Often the presence of white ants goes unnoticed until they have done so much damage to the structure of a building that things literally start to fall apart. Once you can see the damage, the issue is serious. It’s like this with minerals (and vitamins) for horses. Once you can see a mineral deficiency, you can be sure that issue has been there for a long time and that the damage is now

Avoid deficiency by getting good advice on your horse s nutrition. extensive. Just because you can’t see a mineral deficiency, doesn’t mean one doesn’t exist. In fact if you are not supplementing your horse correctly, either with carefully chosen fortified feeds or vitamin/minerals supplements,I would say with 99.9% certainty that your horse will be deficient in something that will eventually cause a health issue. All of these nutrition-related deficiency

issues are so easily avoided. Instead of spending several months (and often several thousand dollars) fixing the problems caused by deficiency, you can just prevent the deficiency and therefore prevent the issue. Let me answer this question a bit more first, and then I’ll come back to how you can prevent the problems.  continued page 17

Seek advice on correct diet and supplementation  From page 16 Some symptoms of mineral (and vitamin) deficiency Remember these are symptoms of long term deficiency, they tend to take several months to several years to show up… listed in no particular order:  Dull coat that lacks shine and richness of colour  Cracked, weak hooves-Joints that start to deteriorate at a young age  Poor immune response, taking a long time to recover from immune challenges  Changes in behaviour, often toward more anxious, spooky behaviour  Loss of muscle or inability to gain muscle  Weight loss or inability to gain weight  Low energy or reaching fatigue earlier than they should for their level of fitness  Gut issues, including poor digestion, poor absorption and an increased risk of gastric ulcers  Uterine artery rupture in foaling mares  Flexure limb deformity and OCD in foals and young horses  Stillbirths  Broken bones including legs, ribs, pelvis (unfortunately often the first symptom that is recognised in chronically calcium deficient horses) This list could go on but this will cover many of the issues many of you will see. Unfortunately we also often try to treat the

Good nutrition must go hand in hand with any treatments given to your horses. symptom before we treat the underlying cause. So good nutrition must always go hand in hand with any treatments given to these horses. For example it’s virtually no use using a joint supplement when a diet is chronically copper and zinc deficient. What I really want to convey here is that every horse’s diet, almost without exception, needs some sort of vitamin and mineral support. And if they don’t receive that support, one (if you are lucky) or many of these issues will start to show in your horse. And this is where FeedXL comes in. FeedXL helps you figure out exactly which vitamins

and minerals are missing from the diet, and exactly which feeds or supplements (of the literally thousands of options you have) can be used to best meet those needs. And it stops us doing that thing where we overfeed or oversupplement. This, at best, leads to wasting money, at worst ends in equally disastrous vitamin or mineral toxicity. The moral of the story? Just because you can’t see a problem doesn’t mean there isn’t a problem! The sooner you look at your horse’s diet and fix any vitamin or mineral deficiencies, the better! THE ULTIMATE QUESTION... WHAT DO ALL HORSES NEED TO EAT? Horses are herbivorous animals, from the Perissodactyl order of mammals, and can grow into big strong animals with a simple diet. They love to forage and prefer to eat grass as a natural source of nutrition in small amounts steadily throughout the day. Horses are Vegans and that is why TuffRock only makes Vegan products, like Vegan people they can eat a variety of foods and therein lies the challenge. There are so many feeds, supplement, hay and chaff choices are available we are often asked what is the best diet or how do you decide what your horse needs? You can ask your local produce, feed company or veterinarian, always they will listen. The research for the ultimate diet continues all over the world and new products come out all the time, that is why TuffRock supplements are complements to all diets, however there is one answer if you think laterally, all horses need WATER to eat!!

Page 18

Clean water should be always an everyday priority and available to drink when horses are thirsty. Their other 5 basics need to eat also include carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals however it is the ratio of each input that is the hardest question. I have asked this question of many experts and back in the day famously included Former President of American Judge Coaches, Mr Dale T Barnett, then Murray State University KY Equine Co-Ordinator, I met up with when he was judging Paint Horse Nationals, sponsored by TuffRock in Dubbo 2006. We talked deeply about issues such as Fescue Toxicosis that led us to develop TuffRock GI (featured in our last edition) and also about the 5 basic horse nutritional needs that led us to make TuffRock EJF the most affordable Everyday Equine Joint Formula. Dale and our consultant nutritionists at the time advised TuffRock EJF must be simple and look to make from our volcanic Tuff Conditioner Minerals Plus gut health action for collagen generation as the first step. Then hot synergise with Calcium stabilised Bran and Pollard (Wheat grass) for the other 4 needs including

botanic Vitamin B for calm energy and Omegas for overall joint health. We are continually amazed by how well TuffRock EJF is received by horses of all ages... from the needs of developing weanling or yearlings, incredibly popular for broodmares in their last trimester with several black type winners as a result, performance or show horses and my favourite, those we want simply comfortable in the paddock. My most famous TuffRock EJF Testimonial comes from kicking dirt at an invitational campdraft, wearing my TuffRock cap, old mate next to me proudly points to his granddaughter in the cut-out and we watched it go round. I said congratulations and he said “.. thanks, your products work, of course I asked which TuffRock he likes? Poultice is bloody good however that joint powder (EJF) is amazing, don’t know how only 1 small 50 gram scoop each day keeps my 25 y.o. horse in such great condition. I competed this horse then my daughter and now it helped my granddaughter just make the finals at the age of 8!!

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, environmental management will also so assist in protecting your horse.

The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.

Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

Temperament verses tolerance By TANJA KRAUS

At our clinics, you will hear us talk often and consistently about the horses body language and psychology. Just like humans some horses are timid and some outgoing. Outgoing horses are often labeled: - Bossy - Challenging - Tough And all the bad words that I can't write here. These guys often get the short end of the stick - destined for a life exposed to those who 'need' to: - Break them - Show them who's boss - Dominate And this brings its own set of defensive mechanisms and coping strategies. What about the timid ones? Timid horses are often labeled: - Quiet - Willing - Bombproof Destined for a life of rapid exposure and quick progress.

Horse aren’t always what they may appear - learn to understand your horse’s body language and you may be surprised.

The 'bad' ones often end up in the 'doggers'. The 'good' ones end up overwhelmed. Investing in the study of body language subtle changes in the eye, ear, nostril, head carriage gives you the tools to

tanjakraushorsemanship@gmail.com Page 26

understand more about your horse and how he is feeling and dealing with the training. Just because he's 'quiet' doesn't mean he's ok., Just because he's a b*stard doesn't mean he's bad.

EA coach of the month - Clem Smith By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Clem Smith is an EA Level 1 General Coach, based in Lanesfield, Queensland. "I started riding at a very early age. As a toddler, I used to go mustering with mum and dad on our family's cattle property in Central Queensland,” Clem said. “Everyone in the family rode, it was part of life. “My parents were certainly my role models, both being extremely capable horse people. “I started competitions in pony club and camp drafting, then showjumping became my focus. “Nowadays, we run a horse and cattle property called ‘Orange Grove’ in Lanefield Southeast Queensland, where we do breaking in and training, as well as campaigning our showjumping team. “My wife Sharlene used to compete, now she manages the stables, bookings and show entries. Jessie, our daughter, is also a keen showjumping competitor. “We have a lovely string of competition horses, from homebred youngstock starting their careers this season, to Grand Prix horses. “One of these is Quantico 12, who is one of the most competitive horses I have ever ridden; he notched up 18 wins last season. “I am very excited about my upand-coming Grand Prix horse, Oaks Conjuror. He is still green at the top level, but shows lots of scope and talent. “Recently, I competed at the 2022 Australian Show Jumping Championships where, as a member of the Queensland State Senior Team, we convincingly won the National Teams Title.

Clem coaching one of his students at his home. Photo supplied by Clem Smith

“I am looking forward to a big year of competitions, including World Cup Qualifiers, Australian Jumping Teams League and the 2022 Australian Titles. “My coaching sees me teaching at home and throughout Australia and New Zealand most spare weekends that are not filled by competing. “Coaching is a very rewarding job, it gives me the opportunity to share the knowledge I have gained over my many years in competition and training horses. “It’s great to be able to help riders progress to reach their goals. Showjumping is a fair, but tough sport. “Keeping both rider and horse confident and happy is the key. “Seeing happy horses and riders at the end of a lesson is always the best part of coaching. “Both Sharlene and I have run the Showjumping ring at the annual Gatton Show for the last

15 years. We like being able to give back to our sport. “I have been extremely lucky over the years to have ridden some truly wonderful horses that have given me great success and joy.

“In the future, I want to continue to coach and also endeavour to keep jumping competitively at the highest level of Show Jumping.” For more information on Clem visit www.clemsmithshowjumping.com

Vaulters secure World Champs qualifications By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Australian vaulters Ginger Kennett and Stephanie Dore both secured their FEI World Championships 2022 qualification requirements recently at the Vaulting NSW Summer CVI3* competition, held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. The CVI3* competition was the first FEI Vaulting event hosted in Australia for 2022, and served as a qualification event for the FEI World championships 2022 to be held later this year in Herning, Denmark. Vaulters from Australia were permitted to obtain their qualification requirements on home soil at the CVI3* competition thanks to a dispensation granted by the FEI Vaulting Technical Committee. Due to border constraints and the complications imposed by COVID-19, it was not possible to secure three FEI judges for the competition, thus the FEI authorised an online evaluation of all performances of the athletes who wished to utilise their results to count as ‘Minimum Eligibility Requirements’ for the FEI World Championships 2022. Following the FEI online review

Ginger Kennett achieved a qualifying score of 6.727 vaulting on Donati 3 lunged by Georgie Kennett. process we are pleased to confirm that both athletes competing in the CVI3* competition have had their results accepted

and officially confirmed as FEI World Championships 2022 qualifying scores. To be eligible to qualify for the

FEI World Championships 2022 individual vaulters must obtain one score of 6.5 or higher at a CVI3*/4* competition.

New rearing bit with brakes for control Supplied by WINNING TONGUE PLATE bit

Introducing the 5 star-rated patented design Rearing Bit with Brakes for complete control. Rearing bits have not changed since their inception until now. The award-winning Australian company, Intelligent Inventions, recipient of 13 international awards, has launched another winner - the revolutionary Rearing Bit with Brakes. Featuring the internationally renowned Winning Tongue Plate (WTP) bit, the Rearing Bit with Brakes is made from steel and includes two adjustable chains which apply nose, chin and poll pressure, stopping highly strung unruly horses in their tracks. It is proven to create easy leverage over the horse to subdue unwanted behaviours, giving the handler total control for sales, race days and daily training. Endorsed by trainers, handlers, veterinarians and stud farms: “It has been a game-changer.” – Greg Booth,

Trainer/Vet. “We were able to remove the earmuffs. He has been an angel to lead around and stops them getting their tongue over.” – Nicole Luke, Trainer. “These are a breakthrough.” – Ruby Chatterton, Foreman. “You will be amazed at the difference they can make.” – Mel Leitch, Trainer. The Rearing Bit with Brakes may be used in front of the horse’s bit for control in the race-day parade ring. It is also ideal for yearlings and young stallions at auction to reinforce pressure and release, teaching the horse to respond kindly.

The Horse Report

From Paddock to Show Ring Words by Alice Clarke Part 1 of 6. More to come in upcoming issues. Time to bring in that pony and transform him into your star… but not sure where you start? Every pony is different and every person has their own way of doing things, but we try to follow the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principal. We break it down into 6 categories which we will go through in the next 5 issues in coming months. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Maintenance Feeding Housing/Rugging Work/Training Show Gear for Horse/Rider Presentation

MAINTENANCE This is important, the basics when owning any horse and addressing your duty of care. These principals are a must before you start your show preparation and be done on a regular basis. No amount of money or work will transform your pony if you don’t practice the basics of pony/horse care. WORMING Your horse needs to be on a regular worming program appropriate to its age and environment. Young-stock are particularly susceptible to worm burdens so if your unsure your local vet can help you. It’s also a good

idea to rotate using different brands or wormer. It’s been proven over time the worms can become resistant to the same wormer. HOOF CARE As the old saying goes, no hoof, no horse. It is critical to ensure your horses hooves are maintained regularly. ,QFRUUHFW KRRI FDUH FDQ DIIHFW PRYHPHQW FRQ¿UPDWLRQ and soundness. EQUINE DENTISTY A horses teeth continue to grow throughout it’s lifetime. To maintain optimal food absorption and to ensure comfort during its work your horse needs to be seen by D YHW RU TXDOL¿HG HTXLQH GHQWLVW RQ D UHJXODU EDVHV HANDLING This might sound silly but your pony must have basic handling. You should be able to catch it, lead it, brush it all over and handle it safely. Every time you interact with your pony you are in fact teaching it. It’s good to practice and teach your horse to stand still and tie up quietly for periods of time. This is important when it comes time for clipping and show prepping your horse as we will discuss in more detail in a later issue. Last but not least. It is important to spend this initial time with your equine building a relationship and trust, a true partnership. Just remember, horses are masters of body language not the English language. What you put in is what you will get back. Practice all this then you will be ready for Step 2 in the next PRINTED issue.

Josie has been part of our family since she was 3 months old. She was broken in and taken along slowly and correctly. Due to my pregnancy, she commenced her showing career at the end of last year with a showing family in Adelaide. Her first show (2020 SHC of SA HOTY) she won champion preliminary show hunter pony, came reserve champion in her newcomer show hunter pony, and 6th in the child’s show hunter pony (did not start in her open). Since then, she has had numerous placings in the child’s show hunter pony grand national qualifying classes - Including a 3rd at the rising star show and qualified for Adelaide Royal Show 2021. Although she has been ridden by many different child riders and is quiet to ride, she is still green. She has a butter soft mouth and requires soft hands when ridden. She can be marey on the ground. She is good to catch, trim, clip, plait, float. With an experienced home, she will be an extremely competitive hunter of the future. She is only offered to the best of homes.

As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, so environmental management will also assist in protecting your horse.

KURITCH – REPELS NUISANCE INSECTS

Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
