Sri Lanka, I’ve been given the chance to witness what Fair Trade looks like on the ground. A few minutes into the factory tour with the manager, Chandana Bandara, my preconceptions are already being deconstructed. I’d thought that modern factories were largely mechanized, but I’m seeing that making clothes is far from being a fully automated process—it requires real people with real skills. Their hand-eye coordination leaves me in awe, and I soon develop a newfound appreciation of the work they do.

But in truth, our clothes always have had stories—they just weren’t always ones we were proud to tell. Fair Trade changes those stories into ones that we need—and even want—to hear and share. Now that we know better, I think to myself, it’s time we do better. Patagonia employee Dave Rastovich works on a variety of social and environmental responsibility projects, including our grassroots grants program. He lives near Byron Bay, Australia. A M P L I F Y I N G O U R I M P A C T : We launched our Fair Trade initiative with 10 styles in 2014. The total has now grown to 284—including five styles of men’s hybrid shorts. Our expanding program has seen over 7,000 workers receive Fair Trade benefits to date.

Offering all-day comfort in tropical conditions, our multifunctional hybrid shorts pair walk-short styling with the performance attributes of board short fabrics. They help you pare down your travel quiver, and they’re always at the ready when you find a perfect little peak peeling off the corner of the reef.

After a full day of Cloudbreak kegs, Fijian evenings are pretty much gold. Kohl Christensen and Tevita Gukilau drink it all in. Juan Luis De Heeckeren

“Since Hōkūle‘a was launched in 1975, we’ve seen that this magical vessel has the power to connect, inspire and transform communities and people. Carried upon her decks, Pacific peoples have revived the art and science of celestial navigation, wayfinding and deep-ocean voyaging that lay dormant for 600 years. Voyaging aboard Hōkūle’a for the past four decades has taught us how to look to the past to strengthen our future; to bring the technology, wisdom and values of our ancestors into the present; and to call upon them to help us navigate to a brighter destination for our island earth. Just as Hōkūle’a was a beacon of hope born from the struggles of the 1970s, we embarked on the Mālama Honua worldwide voyage to help shine the light of hope on over 100 communities around the world that are taking action to solve the greatest environmental and social issues of these challenging times.” Nainoa Thompson is the president of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and a master in the traditional art and science of Polynesian wayfinding. Read his full essay, and much more from the Mālama Honua voyage, in our upcoming May catalog.

In honor of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage, our new Limited Edition Pataloha® Shirt and Dress feature an original depiction of Hōkūle‘a at sea. Since leaving Hawai’i three years ago, the crew of Hōkūle‘a have been sailing around the globe using traditional Polynesian wayfinding techniques. Along the way, they’re sharing a teaching that has always guided Hawaiian culture: “The natural world is a gift with limits, and we must carefully steward this gift if we are to survive.” Mālama Honua: Hōkūle‘a—A Voyage of Hope, a book published by Patagonia about the journey, will be released in Fall 2017 and is available for preorder now. Learn more and donate to support the voyage at hokulea.com.

These days you can watch a swell come to life with a few taps of your thumb, but finding out how your clothing is made is still next to impossible. To promote transparency and support workers in our supply chain, all of our board shorts and bikinis are now made in Fair Trade Certified ™ facilities. By elevating living standards and ensuring safe and healthy working conditions, Fair Trade is helping us drive positive change in a global industry that has overlooked workers and their communities for far too long.
