Vibram® Soles Solid footing is paramount to confident wading and confident wading means confident fishing, so we worked with Vibram, the gold standard in outdoor sole technology, to source the best rubber for the specific end-use requirements of our boots. The Vibram® Idrogrip compound on the Foot Tractors is specially formulated for slip resistance on wet rock, while the Vibram Megagrip compound we’ve chosen for the go-everywhere River Salts is optimized for all-terrain, all-condition grip on both wet and dry surfaces. We’ve also combined Vibram Idrogrip with our patented, supergrippy aluminum bar technology on the Foot Tractor Aluminum Bar model. A felt-sole option is also available.

Full-Grain Leather
When you’re fishing hard over many years, it’s inevitable that soles will wear down. To allow the soles to be replaced without having to invest in a new pair of boots, we’ve chosen the stitchdown construction that Danner has perfected on many of its work, hiking and military boots. Resoling, as well as other recrafting services such as leather reconditioning and parts replacement, can be performed by Danner’s expert craftspeople at their facility in Portland. The stitchdown design offers a performance benefit as well, creating a wider platform for increased stability.
Both new boots feature stout, full-grain leather, chosen for its toughness, longevity and ability to mold to the shape of the foot; unlike some other upper materials, the leather can also be reconditioned as it ages. It is treated with a proprietary, PFC-free saline-solution tanning process that gives it improved resistance to breakdown, even in salt water.

Fabrics That Go with the Flow Words by Will Cockrell
How we build better waders. At Patagonia, we’re fortunate to work with the world’s most advanced textiles, but we’re also determined to limit their impact on the environment. Sometimes that’s incredibly difficult; some of the top technical fabrics are derived from petroleum, and it’s taken considerable time and effort to replace them with recycled ones that perform just as well. Other times, though, targeting a toxic or energy-intensive material leads to a breakthrough—and that’s just what happened when we questioned the need for a Teflon™ layer in our fly fishing waders. Looking for a Teflon alternative led us to a 4-layer construction that meets our industry-leading H2No® Performance Standard for waterproofness and durability while improving mobility and comfort. “The objective is always to build the best damn fabric we can dream up,” says Patagonia Senior Material Developer Pasha Whitmire. “And our waders actually make me feel more like an artist than a material designer—it’s my favorite product to work on because I know they’ll be challenged constantly and because we’ve been able to realize significant improvements. For instance, after we gave our ambassadors and field testers our prototype packable waders, they were blown away. They said they were the lightest they’ve ever worn.” As anglers, we understand the unique demands of fly fishing and that a historic trade-off for waders has been strength versus mobility. The sturdier they were, the less agile you were. One of the first things you’ll notice about Patagonia’s waders is that they’re not chunky. That’s by design. Stiffer fabrics can crease, rub and wear in a way that creates vulnerable abrasion points, not to mention chafing. “Unnecessarily beefy wader fabrics can actually come under stress because of their rigidity,” explains Whitmire.
Eliminating Teflon didn’t just reduce rigidity. Happily, it also increased durability and comfort. Our waders are engineered using a densely woven polyester microfiber, along with two membrane layers and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. With this 4-layer construction, we’ve been able to drive innovation in each model—whether for the gracefully minimalist Middle Forks, which use a fabric that’s lighter than anything we’ve ever used in waders before, or in our sturdy Rio Gallegos, which have a stronger face fabric to withstand even the most brutal bushwhacks. Some of our multisport customers will note that we’ve applied the H2No standard to 2-, 2.5- and 3-layer fabrics in our technical jackets, especially for rain, ski and snowboard shells. To earn the H2No Performance Standard, a fabric must pass rigorous testing, including a 24-hour “Killer Wash.” This is Patagonia’s wet flex and abrasion test that simulates years of use in water-logged conditions. Next, we subject it to snag, puncture and water-bead tests before forcing water through the fabric to assess waterproofness. We test for breathability by measuring its Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate (MVTR). The majority of fabrics do not pass all the tests. Our 4-layer wader fabric did. We appreciate the fine line waders must walk, creating the ultimate barrier between you and the water, while allowing the freedom that leads to improvisation and exhilaration—times when you’re focused on anything but what you’re wearing. “We sought to build a fabric that flowed with you in the water,” explains Whitmire. “That’s something you appreciate immersed in the river and immersed in these beautiful places—I think we found that sweet spot.”

The Best Hatchery Is a Healthy River Words by Dylan Tomine We are killing what we love. The vast system of hatcheries and open-water fish farms we’ve built is an expression of our affection for cold-water fish—as food, as recreation, as commercial resource. And yet, despite our best intentions, these human-engineered attempts to make up for resource extraction, development and dam building—to somehow do better than Mother Nature—are backfiring. We cannot have our cake and eat it too. The vast majority of published, peer-reviewed science shows that hatcheries work as a powerful deterrent to wild fish recovery. At nearly every stage of life, from the artificially high levels of competition and predation on juveniles to genetic damage from crossbreeding adults, hatchery fish spell doom for their wild cousins. But it’s not just science that tells us this. In real life, the Toutle River, the Skagit, the Eel, and rivers throughout Montana all experienced dramatic rebounds of wild fish populations simply by curtailing or removing hatcheries. Keeping hatcheries running is not cheap. Citizens pay billions of dollars per year in North America alone to fund hatchery operations. One hatchery in Washington state raised spring chinook that cost $68,031 per harvested adult salmon. Taxpayers and electricity users—you and I—are unknowingly subsidizing a handful of fishermen. Perhaps even more importantly, hatcheries are not working. In Puget Sound, after a century of hatchery operations, wild chinook are at 10 percent of historical abundance, wild steelhead at less than 3 percent. We are using public money to finance a rapidly depreciating asset. With the decline of wild salmon populations, corporate food companies turned to open-water fish farms to satisfy our appetite for salmon. At first, as with hatcheries, we thought this was a clever solution—if we raised domestic fish for food, we wouldn’t need to harvest wild fish. We could engineer our way out of the problem. Then, reality set in: To grow commercially viable numbers of fish in close quarters, tons of antibiotics, pesticides and other chemicals—all of which flow freely into surrounding waters—became necessary. Mountains of fecal waste piled up under the net pens. Parasites and viruses that could infect migrating wild fish flourished. Here’s what we know: Wild fish, in the presence of hatchery fish, trend toward zero over time. Hatchery fish, because of domestication and inbreeding, trend toward zero over time, as well. Open-water fish farms, which hatchery and wild salmon alike must pass on their migrations, only speed the process. We are on a path to extinction. If we truly love our salmon, steelhead and trout, and want them in our future, wild fish are the only hope. When you lose your trout stream to climate change, where do you go to find yourself?
It was late September and the creek ran clear and low out of the West Elks in southwestern Colorado. My favorite time of year: Through the V of the ravine upstream I could see the shoulders of Mount Gunnison slashed with the gold of aspen, and by the water I could smell cold stone and the particular sweetness of willows turning yellow. I stood on the grassy bank and strung the fly rod, taking my time. I was in no hurry. White moths flitted in and out of sunlight. In the dark green pool just upstream, under the shade of a leaning spruce, the trout dapped the surface, making quiet rings. The sun was maybe an hour off the wooded ridge on the far side. Good. Call it the Sulphur. That’s what I named it in my novel The Painter—enough disguise to keep it from being overrun. It’s the place I always come back to. Not because the fishing is world class—it isn’t. The brown trout are mostly gone, and if I catch a bigger rainbow, it’ll be 14 inches and I rarely need a net. I love the creek because I learned to fish here 30 years ago. I’d always been intimidated by the art of fly fishing. I’d read A River Runs Through It, and I thought you had to be pretty much born to fish and maybe your father had to be a Presbyterian minister, and there was some mystical aspect to the whole thing. Bobby Reedy, who ran the gas station in Paonia with his father, Gene, and his son Mike, said, “Hell, Pete, just throw the damn fly out there. A trout has a brain the size of an ant.” I asked him if I should go down to the trophy waters at the forks of the Gunnison. “Nah, it’ll be full of fuckwits from Aspen. Go high.”
He lent me a rod and showed me a basic cast. For an entire fall I drove to the creek every evening and fished. I didn’t have waders and I slipped and splashed in old sneakers and shorts, and my legs got numb. I didn’t care, I began catching trout. I was the happiest man on Earth. I was so excited I often fished until the stars came out. I fished until the guides on the rod iced up. I’ve fished the same 6-mile stretch ever since.
I always thank the creek when I leave. I guess that’s the meaning of the home pool, the place where we find ourselves ... and lose ourselves. This evening I tied on a spray of elk hair called a stimulator. (Great fly fishers know everything a trout eats. They know the taxonomy of the insects and their life cycles. Not me. I look around and if there’s a big, tufty brown bug flying about, I look in my box for a brown, tufty fly.) I stepped into the water. I caught a 12-inch rainbow in the near pool and let her go, and then I waded up into the middle and began to cast upstream along the edges of the eddies. I kept moving. A kingfisher flew ahead of me, lilting limb to limb. The wind was still upstream and blew gusts of leaves out of the box elders. In half an hour the sun balanced on the ridge and the current became twinings of mercury and oil. That surge of quiet joy. I forgot myself. The dirt road climbed away from the creek and left us alone. I clambered over a wrack of fallen trees and into a stretch of the canyon people rarely see. I caught a few
small rainbows and held them into the current until they wriggled from my hands and lost themselves to the shadows of the stones. I loved this more than anything. I think we often love the people and the places to whom we bring the best of ourselves. On this stretch of water I had always brought my best attention and, oddly, my vulnerability. I’d fished here when I was brokenhearted, when I published my first book, when my mother died. I’d sat on the same boulder and wept for someone who would never come back. I’ve called out happily to an osprey gliding over. The sift of the current, the gulp against the bank—those have been the music that has accompanied my life. I always thank the creek when I leave. I guess that’s the meaning of the home pool, the place where we find ourselves ... and lose ourselves. That evening I lost track of time. The creek began to fill with shadow. I fished on. The banks steepened and closed in. The creek pooled and deepened. I could see the rings of trout rising on the dark water, and I began to make longer casts. I was casting to the far bank when I heard a knock. I looked up and he was there—standing half in the water on my side of the creek—a very big black bear. Black bear is the common name but he was cinnamon brown, darker around the head. He was fat and strong, and he had burrs stuck in the fur of his flank. His round ears were forward. He was a long cast away and I couldn’t smell him because the wind was stirring upstream, but he could smell me. He could certainly smell the fish on my hands. I froze. He lifted his nose. I let the fly I had cast drift down. I didn’t strip in the line, and it looped and gathered on itself and floated past. He stood. I stood. Then he lowered his head, swung away and splashed without hurry across the creek and vanished into the dark woods. I breathed. I reeled in the line and let the hammering of my heart slow. I had lost myself to the creek and he had stepped out. He had studied me, wondering if I was a threat—I wasn’t. If I was a meal—apparently not. I was nothing. I was a part of the evening, as he was. That was the gift.
A few more seasons like this and the trout will go. And if they go, so will the kingfisher and the osprey. The spruce and fir will follow. The Sulphur has given so many of these moments. In early July, I drove up the old dirt road, parked at my pullout, strung the rod and ran down through the trees, excited as always. I’d been working hard and hadn’t been here since April. No waders today, it was 95 degrees. It never got this hot. I had always come up here to cool off, and it was not cool. That was disconcerting. I hustled down the bank, and the green current spilled through the riffle. It was very low for this time of year, late-August low. I splashed out into the middle, already
sighting the first cast, and stopped. The current wasn’t cold. I dug into my pack and pulled out a thermometer. Seventy-four degrees. I blinked and read it again. I waded back to a large boulder and sat down. Seventy-four is about 14 degrees warmer than you want to fish. Warmer water has less dissolved oxygen and the trout get stressed. After getting hooked and thrashing at the end of a line, they can’t recover. You can let one go, but it will die. In The Dog Stars, my postapocalyptic novel that takes place in a near-future Colorado, climate change has dried up many of the creeks and warmed the rivers. The trout have disappeared. It’s an awful prospect. Now I watched the creek swirl into the dark pool beneath the leaning spruce, and I thought: It’s happening now. There are more and more of these days. Not in late August, but in late June, when the creek is supposed to be icy with snowmelt. It’s happening here, and in the Alps and in Bolivia. I felt the clench in my chest, the same panic as when someone we love dearly is sick. And I thought: Please, get better. And: What a terrible time to bear witness. A few more seasons like this and the trout will go. And if they go, so will the kingfisher and the osprey. The spruce and fir will follow. And I thought: I have done this. I am complicit. It’s a dream I can’t blink away. I’ve tried to live a good life: I built my house out of dirt, passive solar—it never freezes and it’s off the grid. I have written about important environmental issues. I buy sustainable stuff. It’s not enough—not nearly—because I have traveled, burned through jet fuel, driven thousands of miles for recreation, amassed gear, been a model consumer, put on blinders. I have lived as heedlessly as anyone. I broke down the rod and walked back through the trees. We are so complicated. Maybe we are sometimes noble. Maybe we are wanton and greedy. We have this huge capacity for joy and love, for fun, and we know how to change and grow. We can take care of each other when we want to. We can also take care of the ones without a voice—the creek, the kingfisher, the bear. I thought: We can, we can do all of that. It’s now or never. These things we love, we need, are withering before us. Who the hell are we and what are we doing here if we can’t bear witness and step up? I could hear the low murmur of the creek behind me. It flowed out of mountains that still held the memory of blowing snow, and it spoke in a language I could not decipher.

Staying sun-safe from flats to freestones. When it comes to protection from the sun, especially in the harsh light of tropical sand flats or high-alpine passes, it’s hard to beat lightweight, breathable Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) clothing. It protects the skin against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause premature aging and skin cancer, and, unlike chemical sunscreens, it isn’t greasy, won’t wash off or need reapplication and doesn’t pollute waterways. UPF is an apparel-rating system used to measure the effectiveness of sun-protective fabrics. In clothing, this protection can come via sun-blocking fibers, fabric construction and weaves or unique treatments applied to the clothing. While a sunscreen’s sun protection factor (SPF) measures how long skin can be exposed to UV rays without burning (if they’re even accurate; Consumer Reports found that half of all reported SPF claims are fudged), UPF measures the amount of UV rays prevented from reaching the skin in the first place. UPF ratings can range from 15–50. The higher the number, the greater the sun protection. A UPF rating of 50 means only one-fiftieth—just 2 percent—of UV rays can penetrate the fabric. By comparison, a plain cotton T-shirt has a UPF rating of only 5, allowing 20 percent of
UV rays to penetrate the fabric—even more if the cotton is wet. UPF-rated clothes also protect against both types of UV ray: UVB, which affects the surface of the skin and causes sunburns, and longer-wavelength UVA rays that penetrate deeply into the skin. A cotton T-shirt can keep some UVB rays at bay (while giving you an unfortunate farmer’s tan), but UVA rays easily pass through cotton and can damage the skin below. Darker and brighter colors absorb the most UV rays, but light-colored clothes, if made from UV-blocking fibers like polyester and nylon, especially if woven tightly, can be light and airy while still blocking both types of UV radiation. As tight-fitting apparel stretches, it can let in more UV rays; so looser-fitting clothes with full-length sleeves and large, billowy hoods that block the sun provide the most protection. Plus, they’re cool and comfortable in hot weather. Anglers, trail runners, hikers, cyclists— anybody who is working up a sweat under the sun—can benefit from UPF-rated clothing. Lightweight with airy breathability and offering plenty of free-and-easy movement while keeping out UV rays, sun-protection apparel is the ultimate in multifunctional, hot-weather clothing.

A Guide’s Day Off Words by Rachel Finn
Keeping the faith in the Adirondacks. Last night was September’s first brisk touch. Temps fell into the 30s, and after the hottest, driest summer on record, it was refreshing. I’ve been guiding in the Adirondacks for 24 years and, as each summer gets hotter, fishing gets tougher. Even late in the season, the big rivers are too warm to fish, so now I stalk trout on small, cool mountain streams. On my day off I drive to the gorgeous creek I fished three days ago. It’s got promise in its small, shaded pools. Last time here I caught a few predictable brookies and even a couple of wild browns. That day the water was 62 degrees in the morning. I fished until it hit 70—at 2 p.m. I get into the water and immediately start fishing a caddis dry fly. There’s a shady, deep slot between two large rocks, and the shadows make the water look black. Even after several fly changes, I get no hits in the 15-foot-wide run. Fish in small brooks are generally not picky, so I figure it’s the water temp. I take it—50 degrees—a huge fluctuation from the other day. If I want to catch fish, I’ll have to nymph. I work upstream, get a few taps and finally land a brook. I get to the spot where I caught the brown last week and feel confident, but no trout are interested. I keep moving upstream and get to a beautiful pool where, after several casts, I fool one brookie. I keep going, my eyes falling upon classic mountain trout water. These are the places you learn to read water, to interpret current and structure, figuring out the places that provide food and create habitat. Even though I’m not moving many fish, I keep casting—all fishing is about faith. I get to a long, slow pool entirely in the shade. On the right is a slanted granite bank with a decent drop-off. I’m encouraged by the main feeding lie, which is the point where the main currents converge. Toward the end of the second drift, I see a white flash in front of a rock. I drift again. My rig approaches the 64
rock, a mouth opens in slow motion, grabs the nymph and I come tight to a 16-inch fish. I’m all adrenaline but try to remain calm to admire this creature. It’s trying to escape but will not leave the confines of the pool. Finally, it lands in my net. All wild fish are spectacular, but I’m partial to browns. I love their temperament and feel I have an intuitive understanding of their habitat here in the Adirondacks. I’m also in awe of their coloration. I admire its cadmium orange spots and the Prussian blue blush of its cheek. This fish is a giant for a small stream, so I get a quick photo. Proof of conquest—is it really necessary? Who’s to say? All I know is that I will never forget this trout. The afternoon light has tremendous angles, and the whole stream is now in the shade. I continue nymphing, but with no action I switch to an attractor pattern so I can cover more water. I keep going, the last few pools giving me buzzer-beater energy despite not having a hit for more than an hour. I could go on forever but realize that seven hours have passed on this small creek. I’m going to get home late (again). I love that I lose myself when I’m fly fishing—when I’m consumed by it. It’s more than work for me, it’s become my life; yet I love that it takes work to catch fish like the brown I caught today. It gives me hope that our hard work pays off. For me these little creeks are my sanctuaries, my spiritual places. After a 20-minute walk I return to my truck. I drive the 30 minutes home thinking about the glorious day and that one amazing fish.
