Keeping Materials in Play “The rate at which we consume and dispose of apparel—and all the materials and resources that go into making it—is alarming.” There’s a term floating around in the apparel industry these days. It’s called, “sustainable fashion,” a catchphrase that sounds more like an oxymoron. Is there currently fashion apparel—or even technical performance apparel, for that matter—that can be considered sustainable? We don’t think so. Being creative and solving problems are great human qualities—attributes that fashion and technical apparel designers aspire to. But the rate at which we consume and dispose of apparel— and all the materials and resources that go into making it—is alarming. So when did things go awry? Enter out-of-control consumption. For better or worse, that’s what drives the majority of the apparel industry. The apparel industry is a business model based on volume. In order to keep up with the constant demand for new clothing and lower retail prices, brands and manufacturers have turned to fabrics from nonrenewable resources, cheap labor and, in some cases, unsafe working conditions.
We’ve always believed the solution to changing the way the apparel business works is to rethink each step of the process. We look at the complexity of the systems already in place and the role we play—from resource allocation and supply chain practices to how we design and produce our products. We’ve had success switching to organic cotton in 1996, introducing Lenzing’s TENCEL® lyocell in 2003 and Traceable Down in 2014. We’re also deeply involved in figuring out how we can keep materials in play longer. Rather than grow, drill and mine for new materials, only to have them take a linear path from resource to landfill, we want to take finished materials and products headed for the dumpster and loop them back into the manufacturing process in a circular way. Nature’s way. We started this process in 1993, with the first introduction of recycled polyester. Our new Recycled Down and re\\\collection products featured in this catalog are two recent examples of our effort to hack the system and
reimagine how materials are kept in play. The down material is collected from discarded quilts and pillows, sterilized, and then put back into production. And our re\\\collection pushes the boundaries of which materials can be reused, such as buttons, labels and zippers. The challenge remains to put these new circular models to scale. This challenge is critical to pay attention to, given the staggering statistics that were recently shared at a Parsons School of Design’s “Future of Fashion” panel discussion hosted by apparel industry leaders in the spring of 2016: • Number of new clothing items produced each year: 150 billion • Pounds of used clothing that end up in landfills each year: 2.5 billion • Tons of CO2 emissions produced by the apparel and textile industry each year (second only to the petroleum industry): 2.1 million
There’s plenty of work to do and more materials to recapture, but if we apply creativity and problem solving to our desire to reuse materials headed for landfills, there’s no telling what can happen.

100% Recycled Down A New Upside to Down One of nature’s best insulators, there’s everything to love about down. And now there’s even more: We’re recycling it for more cold-weather shenanigans. There’s a huge upside when you can turn waste into something beautiful. This season, we’re doing that with Recycled Down. It’s a mix of 600-fill-power goose and duck down reclaimed from used items that can’t be resold, and it offers the identical performance benefits to virgin down. In 2014, we introduced Traceable Down to help ensure that we only use down from birds that are not force-fed or live-plucked. Now, we’ve added Recycled Down to our Bivy Down Jackets and Vests (see next page) to keep even more discards from the landfill and useful materials in play.

Used cushions, comforters, pillows and other unsellable items stuffed with down and feathers are collected from all over Europe and shipped to a collector in France.
The items are cut open in the presence of a large vacuum, which sucks in the contents. The down is then mixed and sorted to our standards.
The down is shipped from France to Hungary, where it’s sorted again, washed, then dried at a temperature of 275 degrees Fahrenheit, which sanitizes it.
Our Recycled Down arrives at the factories, where it’s segregated from virgin down. Then it’s sewn into products.

The Pattern Makers “On a winter climbing trip to Scotland in 1970, Chouinard bought a regulation team rugby shirt to wear rock climbing. Overbuilt to withstand the rigors of rugby, it had a collar that would keep the hardware slings from cutting into the neck. It was blue, with two red and one yellow center stripe across the chest.“ From the Patagonia archives And so began our journey into the clothing business. It was a sea change for a climbing hardware company to go soft. But when we started to design our own clothes, some qualities from our climbing company carried over to our new clothing company called Patagonia. We had to build the best product—whether it was climbing gear or clothing. Ruggedness and durability never ceased to be paramount attributes. The visual language was also clean and spare, following Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s austere philosophy that, “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” The bright colors were quite new to people accustomed to olive and oatmeal as primary hues in the mountains. As is natural for a California company, we played with the colors of the sky, the sea, the sun, and the desert, as well as the mountains. Most apparel companies create their color palettes with the help of fashion-trend experts. We do, too, but that’s as far as we go toward following trends. Inspiration for new patterns doesn’t come off the shelf, but from time spent in the natural world or from old, beautifully made things—tools, charts, pictures—that can become new again. We look for patterns in nature, too. This season, we were inspired by the forest landscape with all its forms and textures—from complex, dotted ridgelines to extravagant, canopied cathedral light to half-hidden mosses, lichens and mushrooms. What the naked eye might miss at first glance, that’s what you’ll find in Patagonia clothing.

The cornerstone of the collection, Patagonia Recycled Down is a mix of 600-fill-power goose and duck down reclaimed from used items that can’t be resold and offers identical performance benefits to virgin down. By plucking some of our down (and associated fabrics) from the trash, we reduce discards, and help to grow and add value to the recycling stream.
Patagonia Recycled Polyester is made from used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste and worn-out garments (including our own). We use it extensively in the re\\\collection in various forms: as cozy high-loft fleece; as a smooth liner and face fabric; on zippers, buttons and drawcords; even in the Patagonia label.

Recycled Wool Patagonia Recycled Wool is made from discarded wool sweaters that are shredded into usable fiber (60%) and mixed with recycled polyester (30%) and recycled nylon (10%) for durability. By selecting and blending colors of dyed wool fabrics and garments, we can completely eliminate the dyeing process, saving water and chemicals and eliminating the resulting wastewater.
