Yandi Monardo & Nicksan: Una vibrante colaboración artística

El artsta expresó su creatvidad a través de elementos como el mar, la noche y el desierto, muy representatvos de Baja California Sur. Los espacios de Nicksan Palmilla fueron engalanados con el arte de Yandi Monardo en una acogedora velada donde el artsta uruguayo presentó su serie "Explorador de Mares".

Las obras creadas con técnicas mixtas y la iluminación que se eligió para esa tarde, originaron una atractva propuesta visual. Cuando te encuentras frente a frente con las piezas se genera una crítca que inspira a un diálogo. La exploración se convierte en el protagonista de esta serie, impulsada por el comportamiento inherente a la condición humana.

Los colores, sabores y texturas fueron un recorrido multsensorial para todos los invitados que intercambiaban su interpretación del arte, al mismo tempo que degustaban de los originales de Nicksan.

A vibrant artistic collaboration

The artst expressed his creatvity through elements such as the sea, night, and desert, all of which are very representatve of Baja California Sur.

Nicksan Palmilla's spaces were decorated with Yandi Monardo's art on an invitng evening where the Uruguayan artst presented his series "Explorador de Mares."

The pieces created with mixed techniques, combined with the lightng chosen for that afernoon, created an appealing proposal of aesthetc pleasure. When you're face to face with someone, you can generate a critque that sparks a visual dialogue. Exploraton becomes the protagonist of this series, driven by the inherent behavior of the human conditon.

Thus, the colors, favors, and textures created a multsensory journey for each of the atendees, who gladly exchanged their interpretatons of art while tastng Nicksan's originals.

Escribir sobre el municipio de La Paz me trae gratos recuerdos de mi niñez. Hoy, se ve tan diferente, pero, a la vez, conserva muchas rancherías, poblados y comunidades que me hacen tener presente esos días.

El equipo de Tendencia tuvo la increíble oportunidad de recorrer la península y ser testigo de los colores e iluminación que hacen de Baja California Sur un lugar singularmente pintoresco. Es realmente un placer a la contemplación.

Imagina una isla de poco más de una hectárea de superfcie –Isla Pardito— que alberga una amigable comunidad de alrededor de 20 habitantes, con una economía basada en los ofcios del mar.

Al norte de las islas Partida y Espíritu Santo se ubica Isla San José, donde la práctica del buceo o la pesca es un privilegio. La magia de los tonos verdes y azules del mar otorgan un encanto especial a este archipiélago.

Writing about the Municipality of La Paz brings back fond memories of my childhood. Today, it looks so different; but at the same time, it preserves many ranches, towns, and communities that remind me of those childhood days.

The “Tendencia” team had the incredible opportunity to tour Baja California Sur and witness the true glory and beauty of its colors and lighting making the peninsula a uniquely picturesque place. It is truly a feast for the eyes.

Imagine an island of little more than one hectare of surface, Isla Pardito, that is home to a friendly community of approximately 20 inhabitants, with an economy based on the trades of the sea.

To the north of Partido Island and Espiritu Santo Island is Isla San José, where diving or fshing is a true privilege. The magic of the green and blue tones of the sea gives this archipelago a special charm.

No es fácil en un par de páginas hacer una invitación a visitar este municipio de poco más de 20,000 km² — que es tan variado, tan extenso y hermoso— habitado por gente hospitalaria. Dicho esto, estoy seguro de que después de leer y apreciar los diferentes artículos y fotografías querrás viajar a esta península.

Y para muestra un botón: por supuesto la ciudad de la Paz, capital del Estado con toda su historia y actividad económica, playas hermosísimas, y una variada gastronomía. Rancho Las Cruces, es donde hace casi 500 años (1535) Hernán Cortes colocara 3 cruces pensando haber llegado a una isla, o El Rosario, conocido como Las Gallinas por la leyenda que cuenta que en las épocas de minería de la zona se encontró una pepita de oro en forma de huevo.

In a couple of pages, compose an invitation to visit this municipality of just over 20,000km². It is so varied, so extensive, and so beautiful while inhabited by hospitable people. Having said that, I am certain that after reading and appreciating the diferent articles and photographs; you will have the wanderlust to see this peninsula.

Baja California Sur has so much to ofer. Of course, La Paz is the city of peace, and the capital of the state with all its history and economic activity, beautiful beaches, and very varied gastronomy. Rancho Las Cruces is where almost 500 years ago (1535) Hernán Cortes placed 3 crosses thinking he had reached an island. El Rosario is known as Las Gallinas due to the legend that tells that in the mining times in the area a nugget was found eggshaped gold.

Ver para creer: los cocederos —estanques de precondensación a donde llega el agua del mar—, vestigios de construcciones y vehículos en la salina abandonada de Isla San José, rastros que resguardan el recuerdo de tiempos más prósperos. La fauna también es caprichosa, pues persisten en la isla subespecies de borrego cimarrón conocidas como ovis canadensis, que se distinguen por sus cuernos más cortos.

Imposible no mencionar el camino a San Evaristo que costea las playas de San Juan de la Costa frente a la Isla Espíritu Santo, donde además se observa la dinámica minera que hay detrás de la extracción de fosforita.

Seeing is believing: the cookers (pre-condensation ponds where the seawater reaches), vestiges of buildings, and vehicles in the abandoned salt mine of Isla San José that keep the memory of more prosperous times. The fauna is also capricious, as there are subspecies of bighorn sheep (known as Ovis Canadensis), distinguished by their shorter horns.

It is impossible not to mention the path to San Evaristo that runs along the beaches of San Juan de la Costa in front of Isla Espiritu Santo, where you can also see the mining dynamics behind the extraction of phosphorite.

RAFAEL ARAGONÉS

Grupo Habitat desarrolla en el 2015 un edifcio que se convierte en un punto de infexión en el diseño arquitectónico de Los Cabos, y marca una tendencia innovadora.

Rafael Aragonés es CEO de Grupo Habitat quienes suman Cora Los Cabos al portafolios en tierra sudcaliforniana. El nombre se toma de los nativos que interactuaron alrededor de esta zona, entre el mar, los arroyos y la sierra en San José del Cabo. Marea Los Cabos, ubicado a pocos metros de Playa El Médano en Cabo San Lucas, también forma parte de sus proyectos.

La pasión por la arquitectura en Rafael Aragonés inicia hace más de 40 años, y a través del tiempo, su estilo arquitectónico se ha caracterizado por construcciones modernas, armoniosas y resplandecientes que se separan de la estética tradicional. Adaptar cada proyecto al medio ambiente es su principal singularidad y la de Grupo Habitat.

“Antes de emprender cada proyecto siento el aire, la vibra del espacio; tienes que detenerte a observar el predio, tratando de preservar y entender el entorno. El respeto al ambiente es lo que determina la fusión y adaptación del estilo”.

Grupo Habitat developed a building in 2015 that became a signifcant milestone in Los Cabos architectural design and established an innovative trend.

Rafael Aragonés is the CEO of Grupo Habitat, which recently added Cora Los Cabos to its Southern Baja California portfolio. The name is inspired by the natives who lived in the area between the sea, streams, and mountains in San José del Cabo. Their projects include Marea Los Cabos, located just a few meters from Playa El Medano in Cabo San Lucas.

His passion for architecture began more than 40 years ago, and his architectural style has evolved to include modern, harmonious, and glorious structures that deviate from traditional aesthetics. Adapting each project to the environment is Grupo Habitat's distinguishing feature.

"Before starting each project, I feel the air, the vibe of space; you must stop and read the property trying to preserve the environment. Respect for the environment ends up merging and adapting the style."

El entusiasmo por el sector inmobiliario lo ha llevado a conseguir grandes resultados para continuar creciendo. Aceptar nuevos retos, arriesgarse a salir de lo convencional y ver los espacios desde una nueva perspectiva ambiental, es la energía que anima a los Aragonés y que inculcan a todos a sus colaboradores.

His enthusiasm for the real estate sector has led him to achieve great results and continue growing. The lighting and implementation of natural elements such as water have become a common hallmark of the developments in which he has participated in Los Cabos, as well as vertically directed homes made with extreme detail to the design.

Mar Adentro —actualmente Viceroy— es una de las primeras edificaciones de los Aragonés en Los Cabos. En el 2017, esta construcción fue galardonada con el premio Prix Versailles, a la Mejor Construcción Exterior en la categoría de Hoteles, otorgado por la Unión Internacional de Arquitectos en conjunto con la UNESCO a Grupo Habitat.

Mar Adentro—now known as Viceroy—was one of their first properties in Los Cabos. In 2017, the construction was awarded by Prix Versailles prize for the Best Exterior Construction in the Hotels category, and the International Union of Architects awarded it in conjunction with UNESCO.

Sandboarding

Tan solo unos minutos de la ciudad este deporte —que se ha hecho muy popular en La Paz— te retará mientras recorres las dunas del Mogote como un “surfsta” del desierto.

Esta es una actividad apta para toda la familia y puede practicarse en montículos pequeños de arena, en medianas o grandes de hasta 30 metros de altura. Esta actividad requiere de condición física, para subir y bajar por las dunas todas las veces que quieras deslizarte, sin duda es para los seguidores del deporte extremo. Te reactiva físicamente haciendo que ganes condición, liberes adrenalina, favorece la convivencia y la competición.

Pese a no ser una actividad de gran complejidad, recomendamos contratar un guía experimentado porque contará con todo el equipo necesario, medidas de seguridad, lugares de práctica aptos y sugerencias para disfrutar al máximo del sanboarding.

Sandboarding

Just a few minutes outside the city, this sport which has become very popular in La Paz, will entertain you while you go through the Mogote dunes like a desert “surfer”.

This is an activity suitable for the whole family and can be practiced in small, medium or large accumulations of sand up to 30 meters high. For lovers of extreme sports, this activity requires healthy physical condition, to go up and down or across the sand dunes as many times as you want to slide. It provides a great physical work out making you gain condition, releases adrenaline, encourages coexistence and competition.

Despite not being a highly complex activity, we recommend hiring an experienced guide because they will have the necessary equipment, security measures, suitable places to practice and ideas to enjoy sandboarding to the fullest.

Recommendations: comfortable clothing (especially long pants and long sleeves to protect your skin from sun and sand), sunscreen, tennis shoes, enough water to keep you hydrated (more is better than less), and rest when needed. Malecón

La energía que fuye a lo largo del Malecón revela el dinamismo constante del centro de La Paz. Las posibilidades de entretenimiento se vuelvan infnitas.

La vida aquí comienza incluso antes de que los primeros rayos de sol bañen las costas, con gente que se ejercitan solos o en grupo. A lo largo del día, se reúnen en los restaurantes, neverías o comercios próximos al malecón.

El arte y la cultura están visualmente presentes en este espacio abierto a la expresión, plasmadas en coloridos murales y esculturas que representan la identidad de La Paz.

Hay quienes suman a las actividades patinaje, andar en bicicleta o jugar voleibol mientras transcurre el día para esperar los atardeceres bermejos que tiñen el cielo justo antes de que el sol se esconda en el horizonte, dando paso a la vida nocturna cargada de música y ritmo en el famoso Malecón de La Paz.

The Malecón (Boardwalk)

The energy that fows along the boardwalk or esplanade exudes constant dynamism. The entertainment possibilities endless for those who want to experience it!

Life here begins even before the frst rays of sun bathe the shores, with people exercising alone or in groups. Throughout the day, people gather in restaurants, ice cream parlors, or shops near the boardwalk.

Art and culture are visually present along the Malecón open to expression, embodied in colorful murals and sculptures that represent the identity of La Paz.

Additional activities such as board skating, cycling, or volleyball are also available. As the day mellows to enjoy the romantic red sunsets that stain the sky, and as the sun hides on the horizon; nightlife begins. Giving way to the full of music and rhythm of the evening’s entertainment enjoyed on the famous Malecón de La Paz.

Malecón

El 16 de septiembre de 1926 fue inaugurado por el jefe político general Carlos M. Esquerro una vía peatonal a la orilla de la playa bordeada por arboles de laurel que recibió el nombre oficial de “Paseo Álvaro Obregón”. Años más tarde, en esa misma zona peatonal, se construyó una avenida para el tránsito vehicular con alumbrado y un quiosco. Con el paso de los años y las administraciones gubernamentales, el malecón se extendió, agregándose explanadas y esculturas que rinden homenaje a la naturaleza e historia del Estado. Otro punto de interés es el Muelle de la Reina, anden donde desembarcó el 22 de febrero de 1983 Isabel II, soberana del Reino Unido.

Malecon (The Pier)

On September 16, 1926, the general political chief Carlos M. Esquerro inaugurated a pedestrian path on the edge of the beach bordered by laurel trees that received the official name of "Paseo Álvaro Obregón". Years later, an avenue was constructed for vehicle traffic with lighting and a kiosk at the height of the street. This avenue became the main street (“calle”) in La Paz, and was named, Calle 16 de Septiembre. Over the years with the changing government administrations, the route of the boardwalk was lengthened, adding esplanades, sculptures that pay homage to nature and the history of the Baja California. Other points of interest for the visitor, such as the Muelle de la Reina which is a long pier providing berthing for ships and recreation. It also where her majesty disembarked on February 22, 1983, Elizabeth II, sovereign of the United Kingdom.

Si bien es cierto que el Golfo de California es custodiado por más de 900 islotes e islas con paisajes de formaciones rocosas que guían a la contemplación, también son un escenario dotado de sorpresiva hermosura. Su ecosistema ha logrado conservarse casi intacto y es de los mejores preservados en el mundo.

En esta ocasión, de todas ellas nos referiremos a una isla en particular: El Partido. Se ubica entre isla San José e isla San Francisquito. Pocas islas están pobladas como El Pardito: una ínsula de alrededor de 60mts de diámetro habitada por alegres pescadores descendientes de la familia Cuevas.

It is true that the Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez) is guarded by more than 900 inlets, and islands with landscapes of magnifcent rock formations that stimulate and inspire contemplation.

Nature has also endowed these rock formations with surprising beauty. The Gulf of California’s ecosystem has been preserved almost pristine and is one of the best preserved in the world.

Our focus is on one island: El Partido. It is a small rock island that is approximately 60 meters in diameter and located between San José Island and San Francisco Island. It was originally called Coyote Island and was later renamed by Juan Cuevas.

La historia comenzó a escribirse cuando Juan Cuevas, un joven proveniente de La Paz decidió instalarse en el territorio junto a su esposa, bautizándole como El Pardito inspirado por el color parduzco de la tierra resultado de la concentración mineral propia de esta zona.

Los patriarcas de la familia junto a algunos jóvenes se dedican principalmente a proveer pescados y mariscos a las embarcaciones que transitan por el Golfo de California, pero también son guías entusiastas, orgullos de la naturaleza que los rodea y sus principales guardianes.

Few islands are populated like El Pardito because the island is inhabited by happy fshermen descendants of the Juan Cuevas family. The history of this community began in 1923 when Juan Cuevas, a young man from La Paz, decided to settle on the island with his wife, Paula. Originally, there were no people, no structures, no electricity, no livestock, no gardens, etc. They produced nine children; and presently, the Cuevas Family still live on the island, and cherishes their home. Today, the island’s few buildings have solar panels that power the homes of its inhabitants.

The patriarchs of the family, together with some young people, are mainly dedicated to providing fsh and shellfsh to sell to the boats that transit the Gulf of California. This is their main income generated from the sale of these fsh and shellfsh, and conservation. Conservation is of great importance, concern, and activity among the islanders to preserve the vast sea life for future generations. These inhabitants are also enthusiastic guides who are proud of the ecosystem that surrounds them and consider themselves the guardians and protectors of El Partido Island.

And, as if that were not enough, moments for internal dialogue are guaranteed at El Pardito. The connection with nature and the community is inescapable in this quaint, special place.

Mencionado como “Islote Pardo” en uno de los boletines del Instituto Nacional de Geografía de 1863, la isla es señalada como uno de los placeres donde se obtenía perla blanca o azul, pero debido a las tintoreras había sido poco explotado ante el temor de un inminente ataque. El periodista Fernando Jordán, que recorrió el Golfo de California en la década de los cuarenta, bautizó al lugar como “el Pueblo del Islote” y sobre el nombre explicó que se debía al color del lado norte de la isla, al ser avistada desde ocho millas de distancia. Jordán registró en su crónica que El Pardito estaba habitado por veinticuatro personas, descendientes de Juan Cuevas “el Rey del Islote”, quien en 1923 se asentó en la isla junto a su esposa e hijos para dedicarse a la pesca de tiburón.

Mentioned as "Islote Pardo" in one of the bulletins of the National Institute of Geography of 1863, this particular island is treasured as many beautiful white and blue pearls were procured from that area. Those waters were inhabited by the blue sharks that prevented poachers from exploitation as they feared imminent attack. The journalist, Fernando Jordán, who toured the Gulf of California in the 1940s, baptized the place "El Pueblo del Islote". He explained that the name was due to the color of the north side of the island, as it was seen from eight miles away. Jordán recorded in his chronicle that El Pardito was inhabited by twenty-four people who were descendants of Juan Cuevas "the King of the Islet". In 1923, Juan Cuevas settled on the island with his wife and children to dedicate himself to shark fishing.

Entre la ciudad de La Paz, los pueblos El Triunfo y San Antonio, se localiza un lugar muy especial en Baja California Sur: El Rosario. También es conocido coloquialmente como “Las Gallinas” debido a una popular leyenda de mediados del siglo XVIII.

Este recóndito ejido de 280 habitantes aún emana parte de la esencia minera, algunas construcciones alrededor de la plaza aún conservan vestigios de arquitectura del siglo XIX.

Sus pobladores son carismáticos y esforzados, la mayoría se dedican a la ganadería, y otros ofcios en los que se han capacitado. Tienen una farmacia viviente en donde cultivan plantas medicinales, y son magnífcos anftriones. Además, aún conservan el ofcio de gambucear con la esperanza de encontrar algunos metales durante el lavado de tierra. Son orgullosos de este ofcio heredado y cuando los visitas, están dispuestos a enseñar el arte de esta faena.

Between the city of La Paz, the towns of El Triunfo and San Antonio, a very special place is in Baja California Sur: El Rosario. It is also known colloquially as "Las Gallinas" (“The Hens”) due to its popular legend.

Capilla de Nuestra Señora del Rosario

A mediados del siglo XIX, en 1855, el primer obispo de La Paz, Juan Francisco Escalante, autorizó la construcción de esta capilla, con la escultura de la Virgen del Rosario tallada en madera y policromada. La capilla fue bendecida en 1863 y se convirtió en asistencia de la parroquia de San Antonio.

Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary:

In 1855, the frst bishop of La Paz, Juan Francisco Escalante, authorized the construction of this chapel, with the sculpture of the virgin carved in wood and polychrome. It was blessed in 1863 and graced the parish of San Antonio.

Hacienda Antigua en Rancho “El Oro”

La casona tiene aspectos de estilo francés y dos pisos en una sola construcción; el primer piso —excavado debajo de la tierra— se empleaba para almacenar frescos los alimentos; en el segundo piso se vislumbra un salón cotidiano, donde hacían sus quehaceres o recibían vistas, además de ruinas que refejan lo que fue la hacienda. Cuentan que aquí vivía la familia de Doña Celia, con sus hijos Inés, Shina, Coyo, Alicia, Cuco, Cornelio y Joel, eran bastantes hijos. La atmósfera de la propiedad inspira nostalgia que activa tu imaginación sobre los tiempos vividos.

Old Hacienda in Rancho “El Oro”:

The house has French-style aspects with two foors in a single building. The frst foor was excavated under the ground level and was used to store fresh food; and the second foor provided an everyday room, where daily chores were done and provided pretty views and fresh breezes. It is said that Doña Celia's family lived here, with her children: Inés, Shina, Coyo, Alicia, Cuco, Cornelio, and Joel. There were quite a few children. The atmosphere of the property inspires nostalgia that stimulates your imagination about the lifetimes lived in times long gone.

Santuario de los Cactus

Dentro del santuario se encuentra uno de los cactus más grandes, el “cardón gigante columnar”, especie emblemática de toda la península de Baja California Sur. La reserva es un sendero de interpretación ecológica del tipo multicircuito, está compuesta por 50 hectáreas con cientos de especies de cactus, en su gran mayoría, endémicas.

Within this botanical garden, is one of the largest cacti, the "Columnar Giant Cardón", an emblematic species of the entire Baja California Sur peninsula. The reserve is an ecological interpretation trail of the multi-circuit type that would appeal to nature lovers. Al mismo tiempo que Isla San José conserva un abundante ecosistema que oscila entre mar y serranía, esta porción de Baja California Sur es un espectáculo visual que posee paisajes asombrosos adornados por superfcies rocosas que orgullosamente muestran los estratos del paso del tiempo. Están compuestas por fósiles de vida marina que capturan la atención de quienes realizan esta travesía.

Isla San José mide aproximadamente 30 kilómetros de longitud. En ella habitan: gaviotas, golondrinas y águilas pescadoras; sorprendentemente, en algún momento de su historia también albergaba venados y cabras montaraces. Según el libro Historia de Baja California Edición Crítica y anotada de Pablo L. Martínez, Isla San José fue alguna vez habitada por pericúes, grupo prehispánico nativo de la zona.

Actualmente, no es una isla habitada. Sin embargo, en el pasado contó con una población dedicada principalmente a la industria salinera, e incluso, a la extracción de minerales preciosos.

In addition to presenting an abundant ecosystem that oscillates between the sea and the mountains, this small portion of Baja California Sur is a spectacle of amazing landscapes. These landscapes are adorned by colorful mountains that proudly show the strata, where the passage of time has dyed the rocky surfaces. Isla San José measures approximately 30 kilometers in length. Seagulls, swallows, and ospreys reside on the island. Remains of the Salt Flat: El Amortajado

For a long period of time, Empresa Salinera San José, S. de R.L.D. produced between fve and six thousand tons of salt per year (whole, fne, and semi-fne) distributed in sacks of up to 80 kilos, destined for the national market. Currently, there are only the remains of the daily life that once existed. It is now an unpopulated area where salt continues to sprout capriciously, decorating the ground with tiny shiny crystals.

“Like all ranchers in the southern peninsula, the salt men on San José Island are mischievous, talkative, and, naturally, smiling. They are extremely sociable, attentive, and helpful. They pose mischievously for the camera, or they become very serious, choking on laughter with an efort of will. Manglar

Este serpenteante camino de agua cristalina es una Área Natural Protegida por la gran diversidad de peces, algas y aves que lo habitan. En el pasado fungió como criadero de conchas madre perla, pero la actividad cesó hace más de 50 años. Pueden realizarse visitas guiadas para practicar esnórquel, teniendo el respectivo cuidado de no alterar, ni perturbar de ninguna forma el hábitat natural, ni intervenir con la fora y fauna.

Mangrove estuary

This winding path of the crystal-clear water is a protected wildlife sanctuary preserving the home of the great diversity of fsh, algae, and birds that are established there. In the past, it served as a farm for mother-of-pearl shells; but the activity ceased more than 50 years ago. Guided tours are currently available to practice snorkeling. All tours are conducted being mindful not to disrupt nor alter the natural habitat in any way, nor intervene with the natural fora and fauna.

Isla San José

José María Esteva, visitador general de rentas, informó en 1857 que los arenales perleros de la Isla San José eran el Islote Pardo, La Cocina, El Callo, Boca del Estero y El Calabozo, donde abundaban la concha. José María Esteva, inspector general of revenues, reported in 1857 that the pearl sandbanks of San José Island were: Islote Pardo, La Cocina, El Callo, Boca del Estero and El Calabozo. He stated that shells proliferated in these sandbanks. In another report of the same year, reference was made to the discovery of a vein of silver and copper, for which an army had been organized to populate the island.

In time, deposits of iron oxide, pyrite, and quartz would be discovered. These minerals were sent to San Francisco and Germany.

La formación de la península El Mogote se remonta a una anterioridad de 7,000 años gracias a la acumulación de sedimentos arenosos en el lado oeste de la bahía que eran arrastrados por los fuertes vientos del Golfo de California. Siguiendo las leyendas de la época prehispánica, se dice que las ciruelas de El Mogote eran de un sabor tan exquisito que para que un novio solicitara la mano de una joven, tenía que presentar al padre o jefe de la tribu un caparazón de tortuga lleno de la rica fruta. The formation of the El Mogote peninsula dates back 7,000 years. It is a sandbarrier peninsula that resulted from the accumulation of sandy sediments on the west side of the bay that was dragged by the strong winds from the Gulf of California. According to the legends of pre-Hispanic times, it is said that the plums of El Mogote had an exquisite tangy and tasty flavor. It was considered a rich fruit. It was such an exceptional plum that a groom would make a marriage proposal to a young woman, by presenting the father or chief of the tribe with a tortoiseshell full of these plums. When La Paz was declared a deep-sea port by presidential decree in 1854, El Mogote functioned as an anchorage for foreign ships that brought wood, coffee, sugar, and rice to the territory. Ulises Urbano Lassépas wrote in 1857: "The Mogote lowlands and peninsula defend La Paz from the strong swells that stir up the hills."

Irguió las tres cruces que bautizaron a este lugar en La Paz, conocido entonces como Santa Cruz. Las cruces siguen en pie con orgullo para conmemorar su historia. Hernán Cortés no descubrió oro; sin embargo, encontró perlas asombrosamente hermosas.

In addition to being a legendary hotel of more than 70 years, Rancho Las Cruces is a gateway to the captivating landscape of the Gulf of California. This is the same place where the Spanish Conquistador, Hernán Cortés, landed on May 3rd,1535 with the intention of fnding gold and pearls. He erected the three crosses that baptized this land in La Paz, then known as Santa Cruz. Stone replicas of these crosses still stand proudly to commemorate their history.

Hernán Cortés did not discover gold; however, he did fnd amazingly beautiful pearls.

Historical records indicated that it was at this point that Hernán Cortés landed in May 1535. Simultaneously, the conqueror of Tenochtitlan explored the coasts of California in search of the mythical island of pearls and gold ruled by the Amazon Calafia. Although several researchers have denied that this is the location of the historic landing, three stone crosses were erected on the beach in memory of the name given by Cortés: Bahía de la Santa Cruz. During the pearl boom times, this area was used as a camp by fishermen who dived on Isla Cerralvo. In 1948, Abelardo L. Rodriguez Montijo founded the Rancho Hacienda Las Cruces, which marked the beginning of the tourist boom in Baja California Sur. Bing Crosby, John Wayne, and Dwight D. Rancho Cacachilas

Descubiertas en 1837 las minas de Cacachilas fueron de las más productivas del Distrito de San Antonio, que inicialmente fueron explotadas por los rancheros de la zona, para después ser concesionadas a la Compañía El Triunfo, que en 1870 las traspasó a la Compañía Hormiguera. Aparte de la plata se llegó a reportar la presencia de sulfuros de plomo y cobre, además del hallazgo de muestras de oro en los arrotos del rededor. Enrique Riecke, de origen alemán e inversionista de la compañía La Mexicana, fundó el rancho “Las Canoas” al pie del Cerro de las Cacachilas, donde se asentó con su familia, dedicándose a la actividad minera.

Discovered in 1837, the Cacachilas mines were among the most productive in the District of San Antonio. These mines were initially exploited by ranchers in the area; and later to be concessioned to the El Triunfo Company, which in 1870 became the Hormiguera Company. Apart from silver, the presence of lead and copper sulfides was reported. In addition, the discovery of gold samples in the surrounding streams abound. Thus, Enrique Riecke, who is of German origin and an investor in the company La Mexicana, founded the "Las Canoas" ranch. It was situated at the foot of Cerro de las Cacachilas, where he settled with his family, and dedicated himself to mining activity.

La fachada estilo neoclásico ha sido reconstruida en varias ocasiones. El edificio funcionó como la primera casa de gobierno, cuartel de infantería, despacho del jefe político, secretaría, oficina, archivo, cuerpo de guardia, pabellón de jefes y oficiales. En el centro había un pozo y un lavadero; en el ángulo izquierdo, al fondo del patio, existía una prisión en representación del poder civil y militar en tierras sudcalifornianas.

Sus instalaciones incluyen sala de arte moderno, exposiciones abiertas, sala dedicada a la plástica sudcaliforniana y sala audiovisual para 59 personas, así como acceso para personas con discapacidad.

Este otoño, desplegará dos exposiciones de obras temporales en el mes de octubre: “Sala de Arte Rupestre” y la continuación de “Fotografías de las Misiones”. Por si fuera poco, del 5 al 9 de octubre, el espacio sudcaliforniano estará presente en el Complejo Cultural Los Pinos, anteriormente Residencia Ofcial de Los Pinos, en la Ciudad de México con una muestra de paisajismo con pintores sudcalifornianos.

Asimismo, trabajan en proyectos para documentar la historia del arte en Baja California Sur y profundizar en el diálogo artístico entre lo visual y el autor. Las instalaciones comprenden también una galería. Para incentivar a la población de los distintos municipios al ambiente creativo crean interesantes convocatorias y programas.

It has had several past lives as the first government house, infantry barracks, political chief's office, secretary office, archive, guardhouse, chiefs’ and officers' pavilion. In the center, there was a well and laundry room, in the left corner. At the bottom of the patio, there was a dungeon. These encompass the representation of civil and military power in these South Californian lands.

Today, its’ facilities include a modern art room, open exhibitions, a room dedicated to South California plastic arts, an audio-visual room for seating 59 people, and provides accessibility for individuals with physical challenges.

This fall, two exhibitions of temporary works will be displayed in the month of October. They are: "Rock Art Room" and the continuation of "Photographs of the Missions." As if that were not enough, from October 5 to 9, the South Californian space will be present in Los Pinos in Mexico City with a landscaping exhibition with South Californian painters.

Likewise, he works on new projects to document the history of art in Baja California Sur and deepen the artistic dialogue between the visual and the author. Inaugurado en 1881 por el general José María Rangel para servir como Casa de Gobierno, el edificio construido en cantera frente al Jardín Velasco albergó las oficinas gubernamentales hasta 1964, cuando fue derribado debido a la construcción de una nueva sede del gobierno estatal. En su lugar se construyó un cine, un archivo histórico y oficinas culturales que desparecerían en 1981 cuando se levantó una réplica del antiguo palacio siguiendo los planos originales. La nueva edificación fue sede de la Biblioteca de las Californias, donde se pretendió reunir todo el material bibliográfico de la península, proyecto que no se logró cristalizar pero que dio paso para que se instalara en el año 2020 el Museo de Arte de Baja California Sur.

In 1881, General José María Rangel inaugurated the building to serve as the Government House. The building was built in a quarry in front of the Velasco Garden, and housed the government offices. In 1964, it was demolished and replaced with the construction of a new state government headquarters. Thereafter, the building had several different lives as: a cinema, a historical archive, and cultural offices that would eventually disappear. In 1981, a replica of the old palace was built following the original plans. The new building was the headquarters of the Library of the Californias, where it was intended to gather all the bibliographic material of the peninsula. That project was not achieved, but that gave way to the birth of the Baja California Sur Art Museum to be installed and flourished in 2020.

En este tiempo, la labor de los enólogos es crucial, ya que los primeros momentos de la fermentación son trascendentales.

El enólogo debe comprobar que el proceso de elaboración del vino es correcto y, al mismo tiempo, orientar qué tipo de vino van a elaborar. En esta misma estación, las vides en el campo comienzan a perder sus hojas y se preparan para el invierno. Todo esto sucede en el hemisferio norte. En el hemisferio sur es primavera, por lo tanto, las vides brotan y se selecciona la producción de uva de la próxima temporada.

The winemaker must check that the wine-making process is correct and at the same time, direct what type of wine they are going to make. In this same season, the vines in the feld begin to lose their leaves and prepare for winter. All this happens in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, it is spring, therefore, the vines begin to sprout, and the next season's grape production is selected.

Due to the drop in temperature, we recommend three red wines this season which is typical of the season. Two wines are Mexican, one from Valle de Guadalupe from the primitive grape which is Italian; but in California, it is known as Zinfandel. En México, una de las tradiciones más signifcativas de la cultura es el Día de Muertos: un acontecimiento que honra el recuerdo de los que partieron de este mundo.

En el siglo XX, nace el concepto “necroturismo”, un estilo de turismo alternativo, en el cual los cementerios son los atractivos y las tumbas objeto de análisis, se involucran de manera respetuosa: cultura, sociedad e historia.

Aunque parezca curioso, este tipo de viajes son comunes en México para conocer las costumbres y tradiciones de nuestro país. Si lo piensas, existen cementerios en todas las ciudades y pueblos. Todos albergan curiosidades, mitos y personajes importantes que allí descansan en el anonimato.

Si te interesan las leyendas y los mitos, no rechazarás una aventura por El Rosario, en el municipio de La Paz. Esta sutil localidad se ubica entre El Triunfo y San Antonio. Antes de entrar al pueblo serás recibido por el panteón, también conocido como “Jardín de Recuerdos”.

Observar los túmulos antiguos mortuorios es transportarte a través de sus vestigios al pasado enigmático de este pueblo minero sudcaliforniano. Esta arquitectura fúnebre es muy variada, porque hay diseños de construcción que aluden a diferentes épocas.

Encontrarás mausoleos de diversos tamaños y nacionalidades, se identifcan algunos sepulcros chinos con dibujos característicos de la cultura asiática, que nos dejaron la gran incógnita de cómo es que llegaron hasta aquí. Una de las tumbas más antiguas, todavía conserva en estado leíble su epitafo: “Paula Cota, falleció el 20 de septiembre de 1892, edad 56 años, EPD”.

In the 20th century, the concept of "necrotourism" or cemetery tourism was born: an alternative style of visiting death and tragedy. Within necrotourism, the cemeteries are the attractions, and the tombs are the object of analysis; and respectfully, involve culture, society, and history.

Although it may seem curious, these types of trips are common in Mexico to get to know and understand the origins of the customs and traditions of our country. Actualmente, los cementerios se consideran sitios históricos. Se han convertido en un vínculo signifcativo con nuestro pasado. Gracias a la investigación profesional y científca que se ha realizado alrededor del mundo y por si fuera poco, es un atractivo turístico misterioso.

If you are passionate about legends and myths, you will not be able to refuse an adventure by El Rosario, in the municipality of La Paz. This subtle locality is located between El Triumph and San Antonio. Before entering the town, you will be greeted by the local Pantheon, also known as the "Garden of Memories".

Observing the ancient burial mounds of the pantheon is to transport yourself mentally through its vestiges to the enigmatic past of this South Californian mining town. This funeral architecture is very varied because they are construction designs that allude to each period.

You will fnd elaborate and simplistic tombs, mausoleums, and crypts that will make you travel back in time. El Rosario y su huevo de oroEl Rosario and its’ Golden Egg

Durante años, el norte de México —incluyendo Baja California Sur— ha brillado ante los ojos de los gambusinos, quienes dependiendo de su suerte buscan en el suelo riquezas escondidas entre vetas, rocas y placeres de donde esperan extraer el oro y, en ocasiones, la plata.

Entre los distritos mineros El Triunfo y San Antonio se encuentra El Rosario, también conocido como “Las Gallinas”.

Este peculiar título, otorgado por los mismos habitantes de las regiones cercanas, se debe a la gracia de un descubrimiento insólito que sorprendió a comunidades enteras, luego de que en la época minera se encontrara una pepita de oro que se asemejaba en forma y tamaño al producto de las gallinas, a un huevo.

Se dice que tal hallazgo tuvo lugar durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Aunque hay poca información respecto al afortunado individuo a quien se le atribuye esta bonanza, los habitantes de El Rosario no pierden la oportunidad de mantener vivo este relato, compartiéndolo con los visitantes que llegan hasta este ejido del Municipio de La Paz.

For years, northern Mexico —including Baja California Sur— has shone in the eyes of miners (or prospectors). Depending on their luck, they searched the ground for riches hidden among geological veins, rocks and locations from which they hoped to extract gold, and occasionally, silver.

The area between the El Triunfo and San Antonio mining districts is El Rosario (The Rosary), also known as “Las Gallinas” (The Hens).

This peculiar title, granted by the same inhabitants of the nearby regions, is due to the grace of an unusual discovery that surprised entire communities. After a gold nugget was found in the mining era that resembled the shape and size of the product of these birds … an egg.

It is said that such a discovery took place during the second half of the 18th century. Although there is little information nor details regarding the lucky individual to whom this bonanza is attributed; the inhabitants of El Rosario do not miss the opportunity to keep this story alive. It is willing and happily shared it with the visitors who come to this ejido (community) of the Municipality of La Paz.

Gustavo de la Peña Avilés es un joven historiador, nacido en Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur en 1995. Ha escrito algunos libros y ha sido colaborador del Museo de Historia Natural de Los Cabos. Ha ganado concursos como el Cuento Universitario 2016 de la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur y ha participado en otras convocatorias en el Estado, especialmente en las que están relacionadas a la cultura local.

About the Author

Gustavo de la Peña Avilés is a young historian, born in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur in 1995. He has written some books and has been a collaborator at the Natural History Museum of Los Cabos. He has won contests such as the 2016 University Story of the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur, and has participated in other meetings in the State, especially those related to local culture.

Esta obra recopila información genealógica de una familia oriunda de la región, con lazos sanguíneos que lo relacionan con La Paz, Santiago y San José del Cabo. El libro ha sido editado por el Instituto Sudcaliforniano de Cultura (ISC), con el objetivo de promover la descendencia cultural de Baja California Sur.

Anécdotas y relatos sobre pasajes en la vida de sus familiares mantienen al lector en vilo sobre el desenlace: dos crímenes sin resolver, despojo de heredades y algunas sospechas dentro del círculo familiar.

About the book

His most recent publication, "Anclados a la Tierra" (“Anchored to the Earth”) narrates the author's family history, supported by documentation consisting of anecdotes, memoirs, letters, magazines, and photographs of his relatives and extended family. This work compiles genealogical information of this family with blood ties that connect it to La Paz, Santiago, and San José del Cabo. The book has been edited by the Instituto Sudcaliforniano de Cultura (ISC), with the aim of promoting the cultural heritage of Baja California Sur.

Anecdotes and stories about passages in the life of their relatives keep the reader in suspense and anticipation regarding the outcome of: two unsolved crimes, dispossession of inheritances, and some suspicions within the family circle.

After only two months in Todos Santos, the chef has been impressed by the peninsula's distinct landscape and unique sunsets, as well as the variety of organic ingredients available in the fertile land of this Magical Town.

His cuisine combines Mediterranean and Mexican infuences and products, all with his personal touch.

In 2019, El Mirador was nominated for a "Culinary Experience" award in TodosSantosPescadero.

Pescado Zarandeado de la bahía

Receta de la cocina de: Raúl Cota Mora l La Paz

Porciones: 6 personas

Tiempo de preparación: 30 minutos

Tiempo de cocción: 30 minutos

Ingredientes:

• 1 pargo de 2 ½ kg limpio y fresco

• 1 taza de mayonesa

• ½ taza de mostaza

• 5 dientes de ajo picado fnamente

• 2 cebollas blancas en rodajas

• 1 frasco (180 ml) de salsa huichol

• 1 cucharadita de consomé de camarón

• 1 barra mantequilla

• Sal y pimienta al gusto

Preparación:

• Abrir el pescado en forma de mariposa sin retirar el espinazo ni la piel.

• Estirar ligeramente la carene con un cuchillo, sin romper la piel.

• Marinar con sal, pimienta y mantequilla.

• Colocar entre dos parrillas con la piel hacia abajo, asar por unos 10 minutos en las brasas mansas de leña de mezquite.

• Mezclar mayonesa, mostaza, salsa huichol, consomé, pimienta y sal.

• Untar el pescado en la mezcla.

• Seguir asándolo por otros 10 minutos.

• Se puede voltear varias veces que sea necesario, untándolo con la salsa por el lado de la carne para que no se reseque.

• Servirlo acompañado de salsa y tortillas.

Serves: 6 people

Preparation time: 30 minutes

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

- 1 snapper (2 1/2 kg) fresh and clean

1 cup of mayonnaise

-½ cup mustard

- 5 garlic cloves, fnely chopped

- 2 sliced white onions

- 1 cup (180 mL) huichol sauce

-1 tsp. shrimp bouillon

- 1 stick of butter

- Season with salt and pepper

Preparation:

-Fillet and butterfy the fsh without removing the spine or skin.

- Using a knife, gently stretch the meat without breaking the skin.

- Marinate with salt, pepper, and butter.

- Grill for about 10 minutes, skin down, between two grills over soft mesquite wood coals.

- Combine mayonnaise, mustard, Huichol sauce, bouillon, salt, and pepper.

- Spread the mixture over the fsh.

- Cook for another 10 minutes over the grill.

- Continue to fip the fsh, but don't forget to keep adding the previously made sauce to keep it from drying.

- Serve with tortillas and salsa on the side.

Nota: Para evitar que se reseque el pescado, se tiene que cuidar la cocción y untar frecuentemente con la salsa: esta es al gusto del cocinero.

Esta receta es una variante al estilo paceño, del clásico zarandeado nayarita.

Durante 8 años consecutivos, las fundaciones Ayuda a Corazón de Niñ@ A.C. y Amigos de los Niños de Cabo San Lucas, A.C. han sostenido Jornada Unidos de Corazón: una nueva oportunidad para atender las cardiopatías congénitas a menores de edad en Baja California Sur.

Más de 40 especialistas de distintas partes de México y equipo médico se trasladan hasta Los Cabos para intervenir a los pacientes en el Hospital H+. Philips —empresa de tecnología sanitaria reconocida por su búsqueda de mejorar la salud y el bienestar de las personas— se suma a esta lucha al transportar equipo de alta gama y tecnología avanzada para atender la jornada.

Jornada Unidos de Corazón

For the past eight years, the foundations Ayuda a Corazón de Nin A.C. and Cabo San Lucas Amigos de los Ninos, A.C. Jornada Unidos de Corazón: a new opportunity to treat congenital heart disease in children in Baja California Sur has been held.

More than 40 specialists and medical equipment from all over Mexico visited Los Cabos to perform medical interventions on patients at Hospital H+. Philips, a health technology company, known for its dedication to improving people's health and well-being, joins the fight by transporting high-end equipment and cuttingedge technology for this mission.

La fnalidad es cumplir con la meta principal de Ayuda a Corazón de Niño A.C.: proveer tratamiento en tiempo y forma, coadyuvando los esfuerzos de los sectores público, privado y social, priorizando la salud para mejorar la calidad de vida. Niños, niñas y adolescentes reciben un acompañamiento integral durante esta semana crítica en la que se realizan consultas de cardiología pediátrica gratuita e intervenciones quirúrgicas de alta especialidad. Los padres también reciben orientación para sobrellevar el proceso de principio a fn en compañía de profesionales y voluntarios de esta asociación fundada en el 2001.

La misión de Amigos de los Niños de Cabo San Lucas, A.C. es proporcionar atención médica de calidad en Los Cabos a niños de hasta 18 años que no cuentan con los recursos económicos o que carecen de atención médica adecuada. Por esta razón organizan consultas médicas externas, clínicas ambulatorias y asistencia para establecer tratamientos médicos para menores de edad gravemente enfermas o discapacitadas.

Fe, conocimiento, estrategia, creatividad, voluntad y trabajo en equipo se han convertido en el motor de Jornada Unidos de Corazón, que continúa sumando historias de vida.

The goal is to comply with the principal objective of Ayuda a Corazón de Niño A.C.: to provide treatment in a timely and appropriate manner, contribute to the eforts of the public, private and social sectors, giving priority to health to improve the quality of life. Children and adolescents receive integral support during this critical week, during which free pediatric cardiology consultations and highly specialized surgical interventions are provided. Parents also receive guidance to help them cope with the process from beginning to end in the company of professionals and volunteers of this association founded in 2001.

Amigos de Los Niños de Cabo San Lucas' mission is to provide quality medical care in Los Cabos for children under 18 who do not have the resources to receive medical care or lack proper medical care. As a result, they organize outpatient medical consultations, clinics, and assistance in establishing medical treatment for the seriously ill or disabled.

Faith, knowledge, strategy, creativity, will, and teamwork are the driving forces behind Jornada Unidos de Corazón, which continues to add new life stories.
