MAKE THE MOST OF SUMMER

Historically, summer has always been one of the most important periods for students in high school and college. It’s a time to explore, to learn, to grow, and to really discover who you are away from the confines and pressures of your academics. Even in the midst of an ongoing pandemic, this is still true. Even if it may look a little different. The good news is that many programs have found ways to expand. They can offer virtual classes for those who can’t (or would rather not) travel. There are still ways to learn languages, explore new skills, and broaden a student’s horizons even if it’s from the comfort of their living room.

The world looks different, but some things are still consistent. Young adults and adolescents need opportunities to broaden their world view, get out of their comfort zone, and learn what will make them happy going forward. The future is (still) very bright for young people and there are still so many opportunities. Let’s explore them.

Why did

choose to participate in a summer program?

After twelve months of hearing the terms ‘inflation’, ‘volatility’ and ‘federal financial assistance’ in a COVID plagued 2020, I began to take a real interest in busi ness and economics. I was also interested in under standing where studying economics and business could take you in terms of career opportunities. I had so many unanswered questions and I thought a sum mer program would help me find the answers I was looking for. I wanted to explore my passion for the broad area of business with like-minded individuals and learn about the concepts and fundamentals of the subject from an expert in the field.

How did you decide which program was right for you?

By researching intensive online pre-college introduc tory business programs and through reading and listening to student testimonials I discovered the WSA Business Academy program. I chose to participate in this specific program because its curriculum incorpo rated all the core elements I wanted to learn whilst also being set in a collaborative discussion-based environ ment online with an excellent instructor with experi ence in the field.

What was a typical day in your summer program?

A typical day would begin by the group discussing the assigned material from the previous lesson with some challenging conversations and insights from our in structor, Dr Dericks. Then we would move onto learn ing about an assigned fundamental business concept for the day’s program. Many of these concepts, such as microeconomic price theory and game-theory were concepts that were relatively new to the whole group.

Dr Dericks would present a thorough and in-depth presentation, supported by real-life business case studies and lively peer discussions to make the con cept relevant and understandable. Then we were assigned take-home assignments to reinforce the key learnings from the day. I was amazed that I was able to learn countless complicated business concepts in only two weeks with the help of my instructor and peers.

What was the most memorable moment of your summer?

My most memorable moment of the program was when we learnt about competitive strategy and Por ter’s Five Forces and then utilised these skills in an entrepreneurial challenge. In a Shark Tank like envi ronment, in pairs, we created a product with a scal ability and exit goal. We then presented our product to our peer group for feedback and discussion. This exercise was engaging and allowed us to be innovative and put the theory we had learnt into practice. Overall it was both a fun and rewarding experience that has cemented my desire to pursue further study and a career in business.

What advice do you have for teens looking at summer programs?

Summer programs are a great investment in your fu ture. I would say make sure that you look at programs that specialise in areas you are genuinely curious and passionate. You should do extensive research to ensure that the program’s curriculum is the right one for you and ticks all of your boxes. Make sure that the program will teach you new skills or concepts so that you would have used the opportunity of time to have grown and developed over the holidays.

How My Summer Program Turned Into A LIFELONG PASSION

ummer programs have a habit of changing the direction of student’s lives. Here’s one story just like that!

If you’re considering a summer study program, whether it’s international or within your home country, prepare yourself for a life-chang ing experience! You might meet people who become your best friends for life. You might take a class with a professor who becomes a mentor. You might choose

a career based on your summer experience. And no matter what happens, you’ll learn a lot about yourself, about others, and about other places in the world!

Maggie Fuller just finished up a law degree from the University of Glasgow, where she specialized in antiquities law – a field that deals with ownership rights of ancient artifacts. It was a summer program in Athens, Greece that started that ball rolling.

“The program gave history so much more context,” Maggie recalls. “I wasn’t just looking at photos of places in a book – I was standing in front of the Parthenon! It really opened my horizons.”

Ever since her experience in Athens, Ancient Greek and Roman antiquities have always been Maggie’s area of interest, and, after that program, she went on to complete a BA in Classics followed by a law degree.

Participating in a summer program is also a way for teens to gain some independence, especially if they have to do a lot of the trip preparation themselves. Maggie says she hadn’t traveled much before, and the experience of planning the trip by herself was exciting, if a little scary.

“I had to pack for three months and figure a lot of things out on my own – things I’d just never done before,” she says. “It gives you a bit of perspective of what it takes to travel on your own and do things on your own.”

She also flew solo cross-country to meet her group for

the flight to Athens. “Looking back now, it was kind of a big leap!”

The trip made a lasting effect on Maggie socially too, and she is still friends with the people she met on her trip to this day.

“I didn’t know anyone in the program, so meeting new people, meeting Greek people, people in different situations than yours, from different places in the world, it really made an impact on me.”

Ginna Closs, an Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, did her first summer program in Rome, Italy.

“It definitely changed my trajectory,” she said, “and made me want to study Classics for a living. Plus, I realized how much I had to learn about the world.”

Maggie, who’s now lived in Europe for the last 10 years, echoes that sentiment. “Studying abroad that first summer really did change the direction of my life –it definitely shaped my life for the better.”

WITH SO MANY SUMMER OPTIONS OUT THERE, WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

he stereotype of a teenage summer may involve hitting the beach, babysitting, work ing at a boutique or hanging by the pool, but the truth is that many teens today are looking to spend their summers engaged in creative or educational pursuits.

However, with language, academic, and arts programs all available to help prepare a teen for college life, it can be hard to know which is the best choice. If you’re a teen considering one of these summer experiences, read on to learn which one is best for you!

FOSTER A LOVE OF ART

“Summer is a time I can do things I can't do during the school year,” says New York high school student Laurel Aronian. This last summer, Laurel, only 14 years old, enrolled in an online writing course for teens via Vanderbilt University, where she tapped into her love of writing poetry and creative writing.

“I could do it from home while sitting outside and received personalized feedback from a university program on how to improve my writing.” Not only that, but she generated a portfolio of work that she’s proud of to this day.

“Summer arts courses allow students to see if they like being immersed in the arts 24/7 or if they would prefer

a college/university where they will have a more diverse group of academic interests,” explains Florence Lehr, an Independent Educational Consul tant at ARTiculate. “In general, arts programs allow students to grow both their skills and their networks -- important even at the high school level.”

FOCUS IN ON ACADEMIC PURSUITS

In addition to (sometimes) offering transferable college credits, many academic-based summer programs allow teens the rare opportunity to learn from industry experts at a young age.

Walter Saukin, Ph.D, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Manhattan College, points out that an academic summer course is great prep for college life and beyond.

“College prep programs can provide insight into various professions, what the associated technology is, and what is the associated growth. When these students graduate college, whatever profession they choose, they will be able to grow.”

Teenager Kate Ciesielski was able to experience this growth first-hand. She chose an online summer course in Health and Medicine at the University of Vermont, which helped her prepare for college and beyond. »

“I’m so thankful that I had the opportunity to partici pate,” Ciesielski said. “By the end of the program, I had met a lovely group of people whom I still keep in contact with, gained a much clearer understanding of what I want to do, and feel like I could go to college tomorrow, which I feel puts me ahead of a lot of other students.”

A high school senior, Ciesielski is now applying to UVM – in fact, it’s one of her top-choice colleges. This is yet another great perk of studying at a college that perhaps wasn’t previously on your radar: you may fall in love with the school after getting a taste of it as a high school student.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN LANGUAGE

If you’d like to learn another language and more about a different culture instead, consider a language-based summer program.

“There are so many amazing ways for students to spend their summer,” says William Cavanagh, Director of Ad missions at EF Education First, which offers numerous study abroad opportunities for high schoolers.

“Arts programs are great for students who are trying to express their creative side, and academic programs are perfect for students who really want to boost their resume. However, language programs can be a per fect option for students looking to achieve both goals. When conducted in an immersion style, language programs truly allow students to find new ways of expressing themselves and understand interpersonal communication.”

“Learning a new language during the summer is the best time to do so,” said Laura Alonso, a student, studied abroad in Japan via Education First.. “Not many people consider this option as it is not an easy task! However, … putting down on your college apps or a job application that you know a second language will give you an advantage. You could also impress your friends and family with your new language skills!”

She adds: “Even if you don’t become entirely fluent by the end of summer, you already have experience studying a new language. It’s something you improve throughout your life.”

What Made You Choose This Summer Program?

I attended the Center for Global Youth Leadership because I wanted to learn how to be a leader, and I wanted to learn about my new school and make connections with other students before starting in the fall. Every time a new entrepreneur came in to speak to use about their own experiences, I took a lot of notes because I knew I would learn a lot from what they told us. And I did learn a lot—like, a lot a lot!

What Did You Learn While Attending This Summer Program?

Since I stayed in the dorm, I also got to have my first experience with having a roommate. The fact that I could go up on a stage and talk and be confident— it was the first time I truly was able to do that. Eventually I got into the theatre program at school, because I wanted to get back up on that stage, even though I was terrified of it. It was the beginning of me being less shy! I got to a place where I could make a lot of friends and get to know everybody. I love Brandon Hall because everyone here is so supportive and really kind, and because it’s a small school, everybody can have one-on-one attention…it makes me feel important and like I have a place.

What Is Your Advice to Teens Looking for A Summer Program?

My advice to anyone applying to summer programs is a phrase I learned in Costa Rica, "Squeeze all the juice out of the lemon." Make the most of your experiences and learn everything you can from the programs that you choose to attend!

Last summer I chose the Engineering and Design Lab (EDL) program at Tufts because it gave me an opportunity to explore and learn more about Robotics. Due to Covid the program was on-line during the Summer of 2021. Nevertheless, we didn’t let that stop us and we had plenty of opportunities for learning and fun.

What was a typical day in your summer program?

Our day started with an Engineering & Design Instruction session, where we learned more about the sensors our robots had and how to best use them. After a brief break, we usually had the opportunity to learn and engage with a guest speaker who was usually an engineer in a specific field like Civil or Mechanical engineering. After lunch we worked on our robot, and coded it so that it could complete a series of predetermined tasks. The final session of the day was dedicated time to work on your team projects with supervi sory assistance if needed.

What was the most memorable moment of your summer?

The most memorable part of the program for me was the lectures we received from engineers, specifically about what the future of engineering will look like.

What advice do you have for teens looking at summer programs?

My advice to other Teens is that this is an excellent program to learn more about the key technologies of the future. It is the right program for you if you are curious, and want to learn more about Robot ics and Programming. It was a fun group of students and the teachers which made the program very open and friendly such that everyone, at all different levels, felt comfortable and included. I really enjoyed it and

WHAT TO TELL YOUR TEEN

Before A Summer Program

n overnight summer program, whether on a college campus or at a camp, can be an awesome experience for teenag ers. They get a chance to meet new people and try new things or get better at the things they love to do. But...

Teenagers, being teenagers, often test the boundar ies. That’s especially true because overnight summer programs are often the first place they get a chance to be out of the reach of their parents and to just be themselves.

Before your child goes off to camp or a pre-college program, have a discussion about what you and your child expect from the experience. Summer program experts offer the following suggestions on what to agree on:

1.

RULES ARE RULES.

FOLLOW THEM. Programs don’t like to send teenagers home, and the teen who’s sent home isn’t happy about it, either, says Michael Knauf, director at French Woods Fes tival, a performing arts camp in the western Catskill Mountains of New York. »

Programs have strict rules about smoking, vaping, alco hol, drugs and sex. Any of those behaviors could be a deal breaker and end your teen’s summer camp expe rience on a bad note. Depending on the seriousness of the behavior, the camp could just call to alert you and give your child a warning, or it could be an automatic trip home – at the parents’ expense.

“The thing (to know) about camp is that everybody knows what everybody else is doing,” says Eve Eiffler, owner of Tips on Trips and Camps, a free service that connects kids with camps and other programs. “There is no time that you are left alone. You have to be at activities, and if you don’t show up, staff members have walkie-talkies to keep track of kids. If you do break the rules, chances are you are going to get caught.”

2. ASK FOR HELP.

If there’s an uncomfortable or unusual situation, find a camp counselor or dorm advisor and discuss the issue.

“Go to a staff member if there is anything you need help navigating because they are your surrogate parents over the summer,” Eiffler says. “They are there to help you and watch out for you. So if you are afraid or concerned or wondering about things, those are the people you want to go to first. And if you don’t feel comfortable doing that, find another adult.”

3. RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE.

You will be living in close quarters with people you don’t know at first. Respect their space, their property, their feelings and their bodies. You will be among people who think differently than you do, or do things in a way that is different from what you’re used it. Keep in mind that anyone could become your new best friend or teach you something awesome you don’t know.

4. TAKE A RISK ON SOMETHING NEW.

Summer camps don’t have grades, so you can’t fail. And even pre-college academic programs offer activi ties and field trips that are just for fun. Eiffler advises teenagers to try new things, even if they are afraid they won’t be good at them. You might find that you are better than you thought and find a new life passion or hobby you love.

“This is the time and place to do that because it’s a sheltered, supportive environment, so it’s OK not to be perfect there,” she says. “Nobody is grading them on how fast they get up on water-skis or how quickly they learn to serve on the tennis court. Take this op portunity to really enjoy yourself and try things you wouldn’t normally do.”

5.

CHOOSE WHO YOU WANT TO BE.

Camp represents a clean slate for teenagers, espe cially if they feel pegged into a certain category at home, Knauf says. It’s a great time to think about how you want to be perceived by a new group of people. It can be freeing, and you could learn some thing new about yourself.

“Teenagers’ biggest issues are probably self-accep tance, and I think one of the opportunities that they have when they go away to camp is to give up the learned behaviors and the personas and the repu tation they have at home and start from scratch,” Knauf says. “It’s a real opportunity. If you are squished in a box where you come from, you can get out of that box.”

6. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.

Without parents there to guide you, you need to take more responsibility for your personal safety and well-being, Eiffler says. That includes basics like re membering to apply sunscreen, but it also includes speaking up if you are sick or injured or feel bullied. Don’t keep these things to yourself.

7. YOU MAY GET HOMESICK.

“This is an expected thing that happens to every body, and if you start to feel sad or that you miss home or that you can’t take whatever it is, camp staff are all trained to deal with that,” Knauf says.

As tempting as it might be to call Mom and ask her to come get you, try sticking it out instead.

“Just because it is hard isn’t a reason to give up,” Knauf says. “If someone is difficult, remember that learning to deal with difficult people is an important life skill. One of the things that you really learn at summer camp is how to be in a whole new place and adapt to that and do well and thrive.”

HOW TO KNOW IF A STEM SUMMER PROGRAM IS RIGHT FOR YOU

ow do you know that a science, technology, engineering or math camp will hit on the right things you need?

Searching for a STEM program can be intense. There are hundreds of programs, some at elite institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the U.S. Naval Academy, others at local schools or recreation departments. Each focuses on different aspects of STEM, and activities can vary widely from robotics and chemistry to space science and virtual reality.

You don’t want to waste money or time on a program that is boring, stale or that adds little to your knowl edge bank. And you want a program that suits your learning style, whether it’s lab work, group projects or exploring out in the field.

So where to start? We asked some experts.

1. FIND YOUR FOCUS.

Consider your interests, then sharpen your focus and

see what program suits your brain, says Hank Yochum, chair of the Department of Engineering and Physics at Sweet Briar College. Once you find the right combination of subjects and teaching styles, you can focus on your passions while tackling societal and real-world problems, Yochum says.

"Research the different programs and get a feel for what each school is doing, what they specialize in and what their philosophy is," Yochum says. "At Sweet Briar, we weigh heavily on creativity and hands-on learning, but some students may be looking for something more technical and lecture-based, which would point them in a different direction."

2. CHECK OUT THE FACULTY.

While Sweet Briar uses full-time faculty to teach summer students, the school also hires recent engineer ing graduates to help with student projects and to live in the dorms. Yochum, who is also a professor in the summer program, says the amount of support that teens are given at a camp setting can "make or break" their success.

"Having engineering faculty on hand while they are learning skills like brainstorming, design and building gives students a higher level of expertise – and students can float ideas by them and really get a feel for where they want to be headed in the future," Yochum says. "There is a huge change from being a senior in high school to actually being a recent graduate who is actu ally working for a company. It's empowering for the high school girls to see where they could be in a few years. .... Interacting with women who have utilized their education can have a huge effect on their future."

You want a program that not only has technical expertise but also support and mentoring for high school students, says George Delagrammatikas, associate professor of mechanical engineering and STEM and outreach pro gram director at The Cooper Union in New York City. Cooper Union offers a six-week summer program at the Albert Nerken School of Engineering. The program fea tures hands-on engineering design and problem-solving. "Faculty from departments like civil, chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering give students the expertise

and the foundation they need to confront global prob lems," Delagrammatikas says. "STEM fields can be highly technical in nature, and if you are spending the money on a summer camp, you want to see your child supported so that they can get on the right track for a career in technical innovation."

Besides technical topics, staff members give workshops on oral presentation skills, technical writing, career counseling and college admissions, says Delagrammatikas. They also help the students use Cooper Union’s library resources, computer facilities and laboratories as the students conduct their projects.

3. LOOK AT FINANCIAL AID.

Delagrammatikas urges parents to also pay attention to scholarship and financial aid opportunities. There are a number of ways families can reduce the price for summer programs, he says. Many programs will work with qualifying students, Delagrammatikas says, especially if they are "self-starters" and passionate about STEM fields. »

4. CONSIDER A PROGRAM’S RELEVANCY.

One of the most important aspects that a STEM program could incorporate is environmental science, says Renée Lopes-Pocknett, former director of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe’s Education Department in Mashpee, Mass., and developer of Native Youth in Science - Preserving Our Homelands summer STEM program. The program, which partnered with the U.S. Geological Survey Woods Hole (Mass.) Coastal and Marine Science Center, took the relevancy concept even further by incorporating tribal customs into the camp.

Lopes-Pocknett, who is a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, says the monthlong camp was designed to help reconnect Mashpee Wampanoag youth with the ecology and geology of their traditional homelands through classroom and field presenta tions, with an emphasis on hands-on experience. It is

an example, she says, of how programs can teach kids to help protect and preserve the planet's ecosystems.

"One concept that I think a lot of STEM programs miss is how math, decoding, modern building design, and computer skills and engineering can help combat global warming and global problems,” Lopes-Pocknett says. “Choosing a science or engineering camp that can specifi cally target sustainability and forward-thinking productiv ity is the way to go. … Investing in a camp that teaches teenagers how to have a positive effect on the entire environmental climate is so important and will help kids attain jobs and security in the future.”

5. THINK CREATIVELY.

“Strong academic performance is a start, but I'm also looking for a student who shows passion and creativity outside the classroom in the STEM fields," says Delagram matikas. “We want students that have staying power and drive and who will take on projects independently. If a student has a website that shows the projects they do at home or at school and I can visually see their creativity, I want them here."

5 Ways to Make the Most of Your SUMMER PROGRAMS

ow do you make one summer last forever? Read these tips!

Learning another language can be an in credibly enriching experience, allowing you to explore new cultures and other ways of life, and one of the best ways to learn a new language is to travel to the country where that language is spoken, immersing yourself in its culture and history.

But let’s be upfront: traveling, especially as a teen, can be an incredibly daunting experience. Luckily though, there’s lots of tips out there to help calm your nerves and make the most of your travel. Here’s 5 ways to em brace your once-in-a-lifetime summer language experi ence and make it the best it can possibly be!

1. SOAK IN THE DIFFERENCES

Living in a new environment, you may be asked to make a new routine, eat unfamiliar food, or work around troublesome travel delays.

A lot will be different from the comforts of home,” says Alexis Jungdahl, Country Manager at EF International Language Campuses, which places high schoolers in study abroad programs.

“But it’s important to view these differences with an inquisitive, positive, and open mind. These changes are part of the study abroad experience after all. By embracing all of the ‘newness’ of it all, you’ll discover what makes your host country so special. You might even learn a thing or two about yourself in the process.”

2. SPEAK THE LOCAL LINGO

You can’t hope to learn a new language without lots of practice, and surrounding yourself with others who speak the language you’re learning is one of the best ways to grow your skills! One of the biggest benefits of studying abroad is the opportunity to ask locals questions in their native tongue. You may be nervous to do this in case you mess up, but always try anyway!

“Every interaction you have in your language of study will boost your fluency and make you feel more at home,” says Jungdahl.

One way to avoid embarrassment abroad is to learn about some of the most common cultural faux pas (mistakes) in that country before you leave. Observing people and asking questions in your new

city will put you ahead of the game, and it’s always best to know the norms of your country before you get there.

3. STAY WITH A HOST FAMILY

Some high schoolers will stay in a dorm while studying abroad, but many opt to spend their time with a host family instead.

According to student Gigi Granziano, staying with a host family directly impacts the effectiveness of studying at a language abroad program.

“My tip would be to try to become part of that family and try to embrace their customs. Remember, you don’t fully know a language until you are immersed in the culture!”

4. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS

time you’re having is great, but spending too much time on your phone will mean that you miss the world unfolding around you.”

Jundahl encourages students to talk to their new friends/ host family/teachers as much as you can.

“Be present for them, and for every new situation you find yourself in,” adds Jungdahl. “What you experience in real life – particularly when you’re in a new city and a new country – will be so much more valuable and meaningful than any scroll on Instagram.”

5. BRANCH OUT AND MEET NEW PEOPLE

If you’re feeling homesick, try new hobbies as a means of finding new friends. Building close relationships with others is one of the best parts of a language program, so be sure to jump on any opportunity you have to do so.

Hobbies are not just an awesome way to meet new people and practice your language skills – they’re also great for relaxing after any classes. So check out the activities your programs offers or ask other students what they do after class.”

Over the years, I’ve expressed my passion for biology by taking as many science classes as possible offered by our school, along with competing in numerous sci ence competitions that have come my way. This year, I wanted to try something new to showcase my passion for biology by engaging in something that was handson; hence, I decided to take part in UC San Diego’s Research Scholars Program.

How did you decide which program was right for you?

Within Research Scholars, there were various sub-pro grams including Life Sciences, Marine Science, Medi cine, Design Lab, and Bioengineering. I had grown a strong interest in biotechnology, biomedical science, and the novel methods used to study diseases over the past couple of years, so I decided to choose the bioengineering program.

What was a typical day in your program?

Within the Research Scholars Bioengineering Pro gram, there were three sub programs including 1) Broad Overview and Techniques (BE-BOAT), 2) Bioen gineering Research Orientation Workshop (BE-ROW), and 3) Bioengineering Scholar High School Intern ship Project (BE-SHIP), which I’m currently working on. BE-BOAT was a two-week course I took in June in which we started the day learning about fascinating concepts–some of which included cell growth, biore actors, and histopathology!

On Fridays, guest lecturers would come in to speak about their profession and the research they were

engaged in. These presentations were then followed by breakout room sessions where we would be split up into groups and take part in numerous experiments using the lab equipment shipped to our homes. Some of these experiments included preparing cell media and utilizing microscopes to observe cell growth.

Finally, we would end the day by joining back into the main zoom room to report our findings to our peers. The BE-ROW course was the second sub-program I took in the month of July where we conducted research projects with a group of 3 to 4 people under the guidance of a current re searcher. This four-week course was the highlight of my summer as it was an opportunity for me to dive deep into a project of my interest. A typical week involved 1) a lecture series that taught us the different aspects of research, 2) an opportunity for open discussions where each group would present their project progress, and 3) collaboration within a team to develop a focused project.

What was the most memorable moment of your program?

The most memorable part of my time as a Re search Scholar was having the opportunity to en gage in hands-on experiments despite the virtual nature of the program. Because physically being on campus was not possible due to the pandemic, lab equipment, including pipettes, well plates, and even an entire microscope, were shipped to our homes for us to perform experiments. Addition ally, I was able to work with students from places across the country, and even the world, to carry out numerous efforts.

COVID REGULATIONS AT YOUR SUMMER PROGRAM: HOW SAFE IS IT?

he last thing anyone wants is a summer illness. Here’s how to keep your kids CO VID safe during their summer program.

If you’re reading this guide, then it’s prob ably time to start applying to summer abroad and pre-college programs. However, there’s every reason to think that COVID-19 might not be “finished” by the time summer rolls around. That being the case, how do students stay safe this summer while experienc ing everything an out-of-school enrichment experi ence has to offer?

Well, first of all, the pandemic doesn’t mean you have to keep your kids away from programs that help them prepare for college and gain valuable life experience. You do however need to prepare them as best as possible for staying safe and healthy dur ing their summer adventure.

TeenLife spoke with Chad Sanborn, MD, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at KIDZ Medical Services in South Florida, and Charlie J. Irwin, Jr. MD, Dis tinguished Professor of Pediatrics at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital with some questions about how to keep your teens Covid-safe this summer. Here’s what they had to say:

TL: Even if a summer program/host campus or country doesn't require Covid-19 vaccines, do you recommend them anyway, and why?

Dr. Sanborn: Absolutely, 100 percent. It's rather simple; having a vaccine will make a student less likely to become infected, spread, and become sick from coronavirus. Ad ditionally, the more students are vaccinated the less likely it is for planned activities/events/trips to be postponed or cancelled due to mass absenteeism.

Dr. Irwin: Adolescents and young adults need Covid-19 vaccines. Not only does it protect the teens and young adults themselves, but it helps protect their community, including friends and family members who may be at higher risk of serious illness if they contract Covid-19. Vaccination is a big part of getting back to normal and helps us safely return to the in-person activities that teens and young adults cherish – school, sports, parties and concerts.

TL: How many weeks before arrival to the program should a teen's Covid vaccine(s) be completed?

Dr. Sanborn: I would recommend that the student be fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to the arrival to the program. That will provide for optimal protection, as

the vaccine studies suggest that max protection starts two weeks after the second dose of vaccine.

TL: Are teens more, or less susceptible to breakthrough infections compared to adults?

Dr. Sanborn: Teens seem to be just as susceptible to "breakthrough" infections as adults. However, they seem to be just as protected by the vaccine, if not more, from getting very sick after becoming fully vac cinated.

TL: How can parents reinforce to their teens how important it is to maintain reasonable social distancing habits (which is a lot harder when they're away from home)?

Dr. Sanborn: I would emphasize to teens that really don't want to become very sick when far from home, as receiving medical treatment may be harder to navigate and different than what they are used to in their home town. Also, parents should stress that even if their child doesn't become very sick, in this pandemic world even minor cold symptoms may well lead to missed time,

isolation or quarantine and less participation in exciting events and activities.

TL: What other advice do you have for preparing teens for a summer away from home, in a setting with lots of other students?

Dr. Sanborn: I sincerely encourage teens to have fun, see new and exciting things, and make lifelong memo ries. Just get vaccinated first! This will increase the chance of you having a healthy trip and will likely open doors for you to have a more complete experience. By being smart, we can still have fun in a pandemic world!

Dr. Irwin: The vaccines are safe and effective with more than 425 million people in the U.S. vaccinated. But I know many young people have questions, like potential side effects. My advice is for young people to talk to their parents or healthcare providers. It’s okay to have concerns, and young people should always feel free to ask questions: it makes for a better consumer of health-care. And learn more from trusted sources, such as the CDC and Unity Consortium website. They have lots of helpful information.

Why Did You Choose To Participate in an Academic Summer Program?

I have always believed that there is no better investment one can make than an investment in education. Having the opportunity to study at a world-class institution like Cornell was a dream come true. Rather than spending the summer simply looking forward to the future, Cornell's Precollege Summer Program empowered me to actively shape the future I wanted for myself.

How Did You Decide That Cornell University Precollege Was Right For You?

Having spent my entire life living a mere 25 minutes away from campus, Cornell has always felt like a sec ond home to me. However, my love for Cornell was not the product of proximity, but of the people I had met. Through conversations with students and staff alike, I quickly found that the idea of “any person, any study” is alive and well, and even in the relatively short time that I spent on campus, I felt as though I had tapped into this mantra. Across campus, Cornell's sense of inclusiv ity coupled with the student body's pervasive love of learning made choosing Cornell's Precollege Summer Program a no-brainer.

What Was a Typical Day at Cornell as a Precollege Student on Campus?

One of the best parts was just how much control I had over my own schedule. Aside from times for class and night check, how I decided to spend my day was at my discretion.

I began most days by grabbing breakfast with a friend and then going to the library to catch up on reading and studying. After class, I would spend time with my friends before going to dinner, and then return to my dorm. I managed to find a fantastic group of people at my

residence hall, and most nights I stayed up with them into the early hours of the morning playing cards, watching “The Office,” ordering Insomnia Cookies, and jamming out at the Donlon piano. It felt as though there was a perfect balance between making new friendships and growing academically. Not only did I improve my time management skills, but I still talk with that friend group on a daily basis!

What Was the Most Memorable Moment of Being a Precollege Student at Cornell?

Over the summer, I had made a habit of using night time to explore campus with friends. One night, I went with a group to the Fuentes observatory, where we stargazed and found constellations. Afterwards, we found a field full of fireflies, and spent the rest of the night watching them, having deep conversations, and getting to know one another better. There was something magical about sharing a beautiful night with people who had had entirely different life stories than my own – learning more about myself through the perspective of others. These late-night deep talks became regular, and by the time I had left, the same students who were strangers just weeks before had become close confidants and friends for life.

What Advice do you have for Teens Looking at Summer Programs or Camps?

Don’t be afraid to try new things, meet new people, and explore new ideas. Recognize that learning is a shared process, and that education is not a competi tion between you and those around you, but rather a process of personal growth and development. The Ivy League may certainly appear foreboding, but so long as you stay true to yourself and your ambitions, you will find that there are few better places to learn more about yourself and the world around you. Don’t shy away from the experiences that await you!

Teenagers interested in participating in summer pro grams while still in high school typically have a range of options to choose from. These include pre-college programs as well as summer programs that focus on hands-on experiences in specific chosen topics. But with the flexibility afforded by technology and online content, summer programs are increasingly being made available through virtual classes and online platforms, allowing students to engage in educational opportuni ties without ever leaving the comfort of their rooms.

WHY ARE SUMMER PROGRAMS VALUABLE?

IS AN ONLINE SUMMER PROGRAM THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOU?

So we know why summer programs are available, but what about online options?

Well, there are trade-offs of course to both in-person and online summer programs. Consider some of the factors below when making your decision.

Traditional onsite summer programs provide high school students with a wide variety of formats to choose from, from day camps to summer study abroad programs. What they all have in common, however, is large amounts of in-person, social interactions, peer-to-peer learning, and general personal development through academic and/or extracurricular experiences. »

Remote summer programs also have several advantages however. Beyond being able to access these programs during an ongoing and often unpredictable global pan demic, virtual summer programs are typically offered at lower costs than their traditional in-person counterparts.

Beyond costs, online programs allow students the ability to access a greater variety of courses.

In fact, Dinkelmann suggests that, in some cases, online programs may actually be superior in quality of content when compared with in-person programs like sleep-away camps or pre-college summer programs on campus. Ad ditionally, online program instructors are typically highly trained and well-versed in engaging with students in online environments.

Logistically, online programs may also be a better fit for families typically on the go during the summer months, allowing students to stay on top of learning materials and exercises while spending time with their families. They may also be of a particular advantage to students who need or want to balance summer employment op

portunities with an online program.

Finally, summer online options allow programs to hire instructors and admit students from any corner of the world, making the learning opportunities and overall interactions among peer participants truly global.

If you and your parents are looking into summer pro grams, don’t dismiss online ones right away. Instead, take the time to see what the best fit is for your indi vidual circumstances!

Program in American History

Hands-On Experience

While I always knew that I loved history, the National Institute of American History & Democracy (NIAHD)’s Pre-College Program in American History breathed life into history in a way I had never experienced in a high school classroom. NIAHD has several classes and I decided to take History 217—The Road to the American Revolution. Each day was an adventure, full of new things to learn and new places to see. The daily site visits ranged from spots around Colo nial Williamsburg to the Frontier Culture Museum. Each site visit was accompanied by a lively discus sion about the significance of the place and the way it can help us better understand the past. Beyond the trips, we had fun activities such as making clay mugs, learning how to English country dance, and doing foodways by making jollof rice! I gained vital academic skills by engaging with essential readings and participating in class discussions, skills which made the transition to college much easier. Not only did the program give me the chance to experience college life and gain practice with academic writing, but I made lifelong friends through the program.

Discovering a Passion

One of the most impactful moments during my time at the NIAHD Pre-College Program was during a weekend field trip to Fairfield Plantation, where we helped excavate the site and screen soil. I clearly re member the sense of wonder I felt when my trowel scraped against a large piece of ceramic. When it was removed from the feature, I became the first person in over a century to touch this piece of saltglazed earthenware, and I knew in that moment that I wanted to spend my life rediscovering the past.

Back in the Classroom

After my Pre-College experience, I fell in love with the NIAHD program and decided to apply to William & Mary for college. Currently, I am a junior at William & Mary, where I study history and am part of the NIAHD Program in Material Culture & Public History. During the fall semester of my freshman year, I took the NI AHD course “The Era of Jamestown” which covers the history of indigenous people in the area to the estab lishment of Jamestown and the moving of the capital to Williamsburg in 1699. As part of the class, our professor invited professional historians and archae ologists to come in and talk to us about their work!

In my spring semester, I took a class called “Virginia Plantations Then and Now” which explored plantation house museums and their interpretation, or misinter pretation, of slavery.

NIAHD also gave me the phenomenal opportunity to take “Field School in Public History” and this course places the student in an internship at a local museum or historic site. I chose to work at Jamestown Redis covery as an archaeology intern. Here, I learned about methodology within archaeology, learning how screen soil for artifacts, take field notes and soil samples, identify ceramic types, as well as learning about the behind-the-scenes work that takes place in the lab! This experience helped me realize that I want to go into archaeology as a profession, and I am beyond grateful to NIAHD for helping me realize this and for facilitating my internship at such an amazing site with spectacular people.

Overall, NIAHD has changed the way I view history and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without it!

THE 3 STEPS OF PICKING A SUMMER PROGRAM

n the past, summer programs might’ve involved your parents shipping you off to a camp for three months of camping, outdoor activities and fun. And while experiences like that are still widely available to teens, many students today can choose programs that are more focused on a particular interest.

Many such programs last only a week or two but can focus on interests such as sports, business, the arts, and STEM careers. And these camps are more than fun times away from home; they also give students a chance to explore what they love.

Academic summer programs in particular give students a preview of their potential major within the college experience and often provide the opportunity to earn some college credit at the same time. It doesn’t hurt either that, when it comes time to apply for college, the summer math or science program will look good on that college application as well.

However, with so many summer programs out there, how do you narrow it down to one (or two or three) that are perfect for you? Well, we recommend following these three steps!

1. EXPLORE THE DIFFERENT OPTIONS

There are so many programs to choose from: local, na tional and international programs in all kinds of different academic fields. Understanding all the different options and opportunities available is key to finding a program that’s right for you or your teen.

A great place to start is on teenlife.com, where you can filter and search by many of these different parameters. You can also search on a specific college website for precollege summer programs, as many colleges offer STEM programs during the summer to high school students. These programs usually require an extensive application process, so start early if you’re interested in applying.

Some programs can also be quite pricey; but the education and hands-on experience your student receives can also be priceless. Additionally, many of the college-based programs offer scholarships or other financial aid.

2. EVALUATE THE PROGRAMS

Before deciding on a summer program, it’s impor tant to evaluate the program itself. Ask yourself these questions before choosing a program:

• Is the classroom or facility safe for all students?

• Do the teachers and staff have the proper training for their duties?

• Are students engaged in project-based learning?

• Are the activities engaging, interesting and age-appropriate?

• Does the instructor give a compelling presentation?

• Are students given time to reflect on activities?

• Are students allowed to explore and be wrong?

3. KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT!

Once you’ve dedicated on a program, learn everything you can about it before leaving, so you can ensure you have the best experience possible.

Many programs give students the opportunity to live and study on a college campus while working on their studies. Are you or your teen prepared for such an experience? Summer academic programs are one of the best ways for high school teens to make their summer more produc tive, but not all students feel like a summer study is worth their time, especially after putting so much work into their previous school year. However, summer programs differ significantly from both the regular school year and tradi tional after school programs, and they’re worth consider ing for any student.

1. AN OPPORTUNITY TO FIND YOUR PASSION

A summer program may help you choose a major or even choose a college, as many programs require you to choose one specialized topic to study while you’re en rolled. Prior to the start of the pandemic, I travelled with Global Routes on a custom program to Costa Rica with my high school. After the amazing experience I had in Costa Rica, I craved more edu cational travel opportunities. This led to me spend ing that entire month of July in Hawaii with Global Routes and it was absolutely incredible!

A Different Kind of Travel ...

I loved my first trip with Global Routes for many rea sons, but mainly because it was my first time being introduced to a different kind of travel. I discovered that travel was designed for learning, and having the chance to learn outside the classroom made the lessons so much more engaging. One of my favor ite aspects of this trip was the homestay. Although it was unlike anything I had ever done before, it challenged me in ways that led to a lot of personal growth. After this trip, I also came to realize how much more to the world there was. Having “my bubble” popped for the first time was something that triggered tremendous personal growth.

When travelling to Hawaii with Global Routes, the leaders were better than I could have ever imag ined. They were always there to offer support and assistance, but also challenged us. We were given unique opportunities due to all of their hard work, which I know I, along with all the other students, appreciated greatly. We were also incredibly lucky to meet many Native Hawaiians and their families. Being taught by them was something I will remain grateful for forever. After this program, I returned home as a brand new person.

Building Lasting Relationships

In addition to the relationships I made with the generous people who hosted us, I created amaz ing, raw relationships with the leaders and my fellow students. Being together 24/7 and not having access to our phones really allowed us to bond in profound ways. From challenging hikes to cooking meals for the group, we supported and cheered each other on the entire program. We were able to deeply immerse ourselves in Hawaiian history and culture and I know this would never have been possible on a one week trip. Our 29 days in Hawaii were without a doubt lifechanging, and I will cherish them forever.

Transition To College

My summer experience also prepared me for my transition to college this past fall. I found the transition to be so much easier than it is for most, and I credit that to my time in Hawaii with Global Routes. I learned how to live and collaborate in a group and became more self-sufficient in the process. I also learned how to navigate a new place in a respectful way, gained practical lifes skills, and learned how to take away the most from what I’m taught.

If you are interested in learning more about the world, yourself, and others, I would recommend that you travel with Global Routes. The leaders were outstand ing and students I met on the program will be lifelong friends. I am forever grateful for Global Routes because it is truly the most amazing organization!

Academic Growth

Through my summer course at BLI, I grew in too many ways to count. However, I can briefly touch on some of them. First of all, I grew academically. During the first part of the day, when Dr. Robin would teach us physiology and anatomy, I learned how to be observant and take thoughtful notes, as well as most impor tantly, asking relevant and beneficial questions. I learned that lectures are so much more than being given information, rather, one needs to actively listen and inquire when need be to fully gain the entire benefit of the lesson.

Hands-On Experience

In the second half of the day, when we would work in the lab, I learned how to apply topics from the lectures in a tangible manner. I was able to experience hands-on experiments in a way that I never thought I would be able to at my age. In fact, my dad is a neonatologist, and told me that he only learned how to tie sutures and surgical knots well into med school... Definitely not within the first three weeks. He also said that I've done more mock surgeries in my short three weeks than he has ever done in his life. It was incredible to be able to experiment with different parts of the body and physically attempt real life surgeries, such as a CABG or a gastric bypass.

Leadership and Collaboration

Aside from this, I also learned how to collaborate with my peers when we worked on presenta tions. I learned how to listen to everyone, take in their ideas, and compromise. I learned how to

be effective in regards to research, and how to am plify my voice when presenting. Through all of this, I learned how to be a leader. In school, now the head of two clubs and an attendant of the Student Led Diver sity Conference, I have been able to take the skills that I learned from the BLI course into so much more than just medical scenarios. While it was incredible to con duct so many mock surgeries, I learned much more than merely that-- I am now a stronger, more thought ful, and more proactive person than I was before.

Describe A Typical Day In Your Summer Program

I’m sitting in a large, spacious room with a group of peers I’ve just met. The atmosphere is gentle, safe, and real. We are in the midst of a medita tion. It takes a few minutes to settle in, but once I do, I feel the tightness in my chest begin to ease. The energy in the room is powerful. The anchor of my breath allows me to dive into my own place of solace, while surrounded by others. This is a feeling I won’t forget.

What Was The Most Impactful Part of Your Summer Program?

When I went to my first iBme retreat in 2019, I found it to be a grounding refuge from everyday life. The moment I arrived, I was greeted by a community of authentic and welcoming people; and by the first mindfulness practice, I was hooked. From sitting on a hill and observing all the intricacies of one flower, to practicing yoga in a light-filled room, to a wild and free dance party at night -- I got to interact with the world full-heartedly during that week. At times it was uncomfortable, and even hard. I spent more

time meditating than I ever had before, but through that, I learned more about myself and the value of embracing the present moment.

What Advice Do You Have For Other Teens Looking For Summer Programs?

For anyone who is looking to deepen their mindful ness, to grow as an individual, to foster meaningful connections, and to open up to an introspective, vulnerable, and uniquely impactful experience, I would highly recommend an iBme retreat.

How Did You Hear About This Summer Opportunity?

In summer 2021, I participated in Arcos Journeys Abroad's Outdoor Adventure and Cultural Exploration program. My older sister attended several Arcos experiences in different countries, including a semester abroad, and loved them. This was how I got to know about this opportunity and soon after applied!

What Was A Typical Day In Your Program Like?

My experience lived up to, if not exceeded, my expectations. I was welcomed into Granada by a wonderful host-mother and two incredible roommates. The accommodations were within walking distance of the main part of town and most of the designated meeting areas. The ad venture program was exactly what it sounds like: many hikes, mountain biking, swimming, camp ing and more. And we were given full access to a stunning gym that was conveniently located five minutes from our host-mother's house. My roommates and I loved exploring cool parts of city and visited many local shops and tea houses. I came back with more confidence in my Spanish, a deep interest in Spanish culture, and many new amazing friends and memories.

What Was Your Favorite Part of Your Summer Program?

This program brought us all over the multifac eted and colorful city of Granada: eating tradi tional foods, speaking to and learning from local artists, and experiencing everything from the highest peaks of the Sierra Nevada to the rocky

beaches of the Mediterranean coast. This was such an incredible adventure and I would highly recom mend it. I loved this program for every reason I just described but most importantly the people! I cannot stress enough the unbelievable kindness of both the staff and the students. I am looking forward to my next experience with Arcos, next summer in Mexico!

Why Did You Choose To Participate In This Program?

I chose to participate in the Juniper Young Writers Workshop mainly as a way of getting to witness the greatness of other young creatives who shared my same interests and hopefully become a better writer myself in doing so.

How Did You Decide Which Program Was Right For You?

While looking through the writing programs

I was accepted into, I chose to participate in Juniper because of the variety of classes they offered and the wide array of people I would get to interact with. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t experiencing just one kind of writing style com ing from one kind of person. Juniper ensured a rich and diverse literary community which was a large deciding factor in my applying. They also offered a very generous scholarship.

What Was A Typical Day In Your Program Like?

A typical day at Juniper consisted of attending uniquely themed workshops taught by brilliant, talented faculty members, and participating in open-mics where attendees and faculty could read their work aloud.

What Was The Most Memorable Part of Your Program?

The open-mics. I loved hearing from the many, many talented young writers and faculty mem bers who participated in live readings. The work they read and the wonderful feedback from everyone in the community was invigorating

and inspiring. I also loved the deeply meaningful feedback given to me by my instructors; the level of care put into it was astounding and I owe each one of them a lot.

What Advice Do You Have For Teens Looking at Programs?

There is a place for you! There is an audience for your work! And people are just as excited about what you are writing as you are about what they are writing. This medium you love matters, and I would highly encourage seeking out a community that can help you improve your craft and interact with people from a wide-range of backgrounds who love it too. What you are doing matters.
