2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

| 7

By ALEXANDER ZHANG LaunchX Why did you choose to participate in LaunchX? I decided to participate in LaunchX because I wanted to expand my worldview and meet new people. The idea of being able to connect with, build with, and live with entrepreneurs from all over the US and the rest of the world was what really piqued my interest. How did you decide which summer program was right for you? I knew I was going to do an in-person program since that was the only option that I felt would allow me to become involved in the community and build lasting relationships. It just came down to the location, and I chose the Ann Arbor location mainly because I liked the University of Michigan and the area where I would be staying. What was a typical day in LaunchX? On the weekdays, we woke up around 8-8:15 in the morning, got breakfast, and had a few morning classes. The morning sessions were usually for lecturing and learning. After a few hours we would go back to the dorm for lunch, and we'd have a decent chunk of time to take a break and socialize, maybe work on a couple of startup-related things. The afternoon sessions were usually shorter and focused more on guest speakers and interactive activities/simulations (my favorite). We usually finished those around 4 PM, and the cohort would split up and do a couple of things— either go to the maker space, go up to the dorms and work there, or stay in the main common area in the dorm building and work there. There was so much flexibility, especially in the afternoon/evening, which we definitely appreciated. Dinner was usually 6-7 PM, and the rest of the night was open to having fun, doing work, or engaging in a combination of both. 8 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

The program staff also coordinated some events (movie nights, karaoke, etc.) that took place in the game room. Weekdays were generally pretty laid back, though there was a decent amount of lecturing and time in the classroom. The curfew was at 11 PM. On the weekends, we could basically wake up whenever we wanted, and most people used these days as time to do laundry and other housekeeping things. As a cohort, we often planned to walk to brunch together (there was no breakfast on weekends). Weekends were definitely the best—it was time to relax, explore the area, and have fun with friends before lecturing started again on Monday. Curfew on weekends was at 12 AM. What was the most memorable moment of LaunchX? I think the most memorable moments at LaunchX came from those around me, working with eating with, and playing with so many brilliant people from all over the world. I remember most vividly the early mornings walking as a group to brunch or the late nights in someone's dorm room working hard on our startups and ventures. It was really one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life, and the culmination of all those long days and nights was the last day with all of us in the dorm. We took the entire night to reflect on the past month's experiences and definitely did not get any sleep. What advice do you have for teens looking at summer programs? My advice would definitely be to look at what you're trying to get out of participating in LaunchX. It really depends on what you are looking for in terms of the people, environment, and experience. Also, financials can be a factor, so it's important to consider financial awards and talk with LaunchX as well.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR NETWORKING Building a professional network early on is essential, and many summer programs facilitate interactions with mentors, professionals, and like-minded peers. Networking can open doors to mentorship, internships, and even future job opportunities, providing students with a head start in their chosen fields.

Whether it's a science camp, a business and entrepreneurship program, or an arts workshop, these experiences provide a concentrated exploration of specific fields, helping students make more informed decisions about their future.

By OLIVIA LE UC San Diego Research Scholars Why did you choose to participate in this program? In the last few years, I had become really interested in marine science but did not have much experience in pursuing that field. I hoped that by taking this summer program, I would be able to venture into research in an immersive and engaging way. I was excited to be amongst other students that were also passionate about this subject and see what it would be like to collaborate for a research poster as well as receive a glimpse of college life at UCSD. How did you decide which program was right for you? Marine biology is a subject that particularly interests me because it applies the concepts I learned in high school, such as thermal ecology, to ecosystems that are rarely discussed in the classroom. It also touched on themes of climate change and restoration which is a focus I really wanted to incorporate into my studies. I knew that UCSD was well known for its marine science programs especially with Scripps Institution of Oceanography being so close by. I also was very excited about the opportunity for students to form their own research projects which was unique to this program specifically. What was a typical day in your program? We woke up around 7:00 each day and after sometimes grabbing a quick breakfast, we headed to the bus that would take us to Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Even though it only took about 10 minutes to get there, it was always really fun to blast music and sing with the entire class. Once we arrived, we walked along the beach and always had a little bit of time to enjoy the outdoors before

going into the lab. We usually received a lesson or set of instructions for the morning session with extra time to work in our groups for our research project. We then took the bus back to campus for lunch at the cafeteria which had a wide range of good options. Afterwards, we took the bus back to Scripps and this was usually the time when we would run experiments for our project or continue our write-ups. Upon returning to campus, we would take a quick break and finish up homework at the Geisel Library, make a fun Target run, grab fro-yo, or play volleyball at the sand court. There were a variety of activities to do within walking distance, but we had a lot of time to hang out with friends and grab dinner before making our way back to the dorms. Every night, we had a floor meeting which included a short discussion relating to college and usually a fun or reflective activity. We then prepared for bed. What advice do you have for teens looking at programs? If students are seeking a program that focuses on an immersive experience and applying their knowledge to a project or presentation, then I would highly encourage them to review the course descriptions and testimonies or examples from years past to ensure that the objective is aligned with their own. I would also advise students to really consider what a residential program would entail because if it is an experience that they really want to have in high school, it can be the perfect opportunity to get a glimpse of what it means to navigate life away from home while also allowing them to form new friendships and have fun. I would also advise students to really take advantage of the programs they are in by putting in the effort and time that the course requires as well as being active in pursuing relationships with instructors and getting a truly full experience. 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

By SHAANYA PUNJABI Tufts University I opted for Tufts University Pre-College due to their diverse range of intriguing programs spanning various fields. Among these offerings, what particularly caught my attention was a program focused on laboratory investigations, which perfectly aligned with my desire to delve deeper into this area of study. Moreover, the program included exciting field trips to institutions such as Tufts Veterinary School and Tufts Medical School, providing me with valuable insights into the STEM field. I believe that the Tufts Pre-College program on laboratory investigations is the ideal platform for me to further my studies in microbiology and laboratory skills, which is precisely what I was seeking in a summer program. This comprehensive program promises to offer the ideal blend of academic exploration and practical experience, allowing me to pursue my passion and expand my knowledge in the field. Choosing the right summer program was a meticulous process for me, involving extensive research and attention to detail across various colleges and their offerings. After careful consideration, I ultimately determined that the Tufts Pre-College program, specifically "Lab Science Investigations," was the ideal fit for me. My decision was rooted in my profound interest in lab experiments, which I have been unable to fully explore at my school in Indonesia due to the lack of advanced equipment and facilities. Furthermore, the program's focus on antimicrobial resistance greatly intrigued me, as I had frequently encountered this term in the STEM field. Naturally, I was eager to delve deeper into this topic and gain a more comprehensive understanding of microbiology. Thus, 30 22 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

I confidently concluded that this program would provide me with valuable laboratory skills and a profound insight into the world of microbiology. A typical day in my program was a delightful blend of education and enjoyment. It all began with engaging morning lectures right after a wholesome breakfast. Our instructor was exceptionally skilled, ensuring that these lectures were not just informative but also incredibly fascinating. Every day, I looked forward to these sessions as they provided me with the opportunity to learn something new and exciting. The midday break for lunch was more than just a mealtime. It became a social and intellectual gathering. During these breaks, I had the chance to engage with my peers, discuss the morning lectures, and share our unique insights. These discussions not only added depth to our understanding but also nurtured the sense of camaraderie among other students. After lunch, the highlight of our day began - the laboratory sessions. Working in smaller groups, we delved into a variety of experiments. This hands-on experience was the highlight of the program for me. It allowed me to put theoretical knowledge into practice, learn new experimental techniques, and become familiar with different laboratory equipment. The thrill of conducting experiments and witnessing scientific principles in action was truly exhilarating. Post-lab time, we transitioned into "science communication" sessions. In smaller groups, we discussed the experiments we had just conducted and the broader knowledge we had gained. While every moment in the laboratory was undeniably incredible, the most cherished memories from my program revolve around the friendships I forged.

JUMPSTART

your summer! Boost your creativity to new heights with SCAD summer programs. Create, learn, and innovate through art and design with friends from around the world.

scad.edu/summer

By AMANDA RABADE SCAD I was getting more active in my school’s art club, but I still felt like an outsider. I wanted a chance to meet people that were more like me, and wanted to pursue art seriously. Two weeks away from home sounded really scary, but I knew it would allow me to explore different avenues of art I didn’t have access to at my high school. I enjoyed Summer Seminars so much, I decided to participate in Rising Star the following summer. Rising Star gave me the boost I needed to propel me in my own creative direction. Around the same time the following year, I was struggling to decide if I wanted to do SCAD’s five-week summer program, or Ringling’s five-week summer program. I was leaning more towards Ringling, especially since I had already spent one summer at SCAD. I figured it would be best to explore another school to make the most use out of my time. But then I remembered how much fun I had the year prior, and how many friends I had made from it. I loved SCAD so much I couldn’t bear to miss out on another great summer. For Summer Seminars, I would have breakfast with all of the girls in my hall. Then we would make our way to the bus stop and go to our workshops. During lunch time, our SSA would take us to different fun places downtown before we headed off to our afternoon workshops. And there was always something fun happening in the evening, like a movie or silent disco. Rising Star days were pretty similar, I would eat breakfast with the other girls in my room before heading to our first class. I’d eat lunch with friends and maybe go shopping downtown before my afternoon class. Sometimes my friends and I would splurge and get dinner off campus for a little change of pace.

My favorite memory from Summer Seminars was from my 3D animation workshop. I hadn’t been progressing well in my 2D animation class so I didn’t feel really good about that project by the end of the week. But I felt so much joy when I was messing around in Maya for the first time that all of my worries from my 2D workshop completely disappeared. That moment was the first step getting me into the career of my dreams. One of my favorite memories at Rising Star was one of the nights I was up late gossiping with my roommate about the boys we had crushes on back home. I was a very shy person in high school and it was always very difficult for me to talk about my interests so I was very grateful to have a roommate that was more outgoing to help me out of my shell. Don’t be scared! I know it’s scary leaving home for a week, let alone five, but you won’t regret going. This year marks the 6th summer since I attended my first summer program, and I still talk to those girls and remember all of the fun we had. I recommend Summer Seminars if you’re a bit unsure about pursuing art as a career. It’s much less of a commitment than Rising Star but still just as fun filled. It’s a perfect opportunity to put your feelers out there and find what really speaks to you. Since enrolling at SCAD I've had the opportunity to work as a pre-college assistant twice and have loved that experience too! 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

By JULIA NEWMAN World Scholars Academy Why did you choose to participate in this program? Understanding the advantage students have that select a career early on, I decided to enroll in a summer program. I have had a profound interest in medicine since an early age, but had so many unanswered questions. So I decided to learn more about the subject and assess whether a medical career would be a suitable fit for me, and I thought a summer program would be the perfect opportunity to find the answers I was looking for without worrying about the outcome. How did you decide which summer program was right for you? After extensive research on various summer medical programs, World Scholars Academy was above the others. This program stood out to me as it aligned perfectly with my main inquiries/goals in the field of medicine, and the class size was small so I could get to know everyone on the program and feel comfortable interacting with the students and professor. The presence of highly regarded instructors, along with numerous positive reviews, further influenced my decision to choose this program. What was a typical day at World Scholars Academy? In the World Scholars Academy medical program, a typical day would start off with reviewing the homework, whilst addressing any inquiries. Lessons flowed naturally from there, and we would often engage in debates, for instance on intricate, ethical questions in medicine. In debates we were 36 22 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

encouraged to apply what we had learned on the course and provide our own opinions and justifications. Postdebate, we would receive insightful feedback and were treated to supplementary lessons, before wrapping up the day comprehensively. What was the most memorable moment of your summer? One of the most memorable moments was at the end of the program during our clinical skills-building lesson, where we were put in the position of a medical doctor having to assess and diagnose a patient presenting symptoms. It left an everlasting impression on me, as it provided the opportunity to step into the shoes of medical professionals. It deepened my understanding of the responsibility that doctors have for the care of their patients and the skills they must acquire to succeed in the field. What advice do you have for teens looking at summer programs? Participation in summer programs is immensely beneficial, as it provides a solid foundation for achieving your future goals. When exploring summer programs, it's crucial to research the expertise of the instructors and that it aligns with your interests. Additionally, searching through the program's reviews will provide valuable insights into their strengths and weaknesses. Check if the scheduling aligns with your availability and whether the choice is the right fit for you. This will ensure a great experience in your summer program!

38 22 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

By ANAGHA HAMSALA BETA Camp Why did you choose to participate in BETA Camp? I was always interested in both medicine and business; I just didn’t know how I could make use of them together. I had participated in business clubs before, but they were very structured experiences. I was looking for something that would allow me to get more real-world experience, and really open the doors for me creatively. BETA Camp is all about hands-on learning: you learn business and a leadership mindset by creating your own startup. I wanted to see what it was like to create my own business, and explore my passion for business, while also getting the skills and mindset you need as a leader in any field. How did you decide that BETA Camp was right for you? When I found BETA Camp, one thing that caught my attention was how I could have a real-world impact in high school, and I didn’t need to wait to graduate college to start my career. At BETA Camp, you're talking to real world experts, getting advice from them, and working alongside them. I think there's nothing more valuable than starting to get that real world experience at a young age. What was a typical day at BETA Camp? My typical day at BETA Camp was filled with knowledge-filled workshops conducted by subject-matter experts in technology, business, science and engineering. We also had mentoring sessions on how to tackle challenges that we faced in our startup. Throughout the program, I was able to correlate patterns and solve problems within the real world.

What was the most memorable moment at BETA Camp? There was a day when I felt as if everything were falling apart and no progress was being made. But I heard myself repeating the wise words of our Program Director: “If you have an idea, launch it. Entrepreneurship is one of those places where if you don’t go after an idea, it’ll wither.” This advice was a turning point in my journey, and many times afterwards. What advice do you have for teens looking at summer programs? Often, when looking at programs many teens consider the quality and quantity of a program. But, also consider the quantity and quality of effort you are willing to put into it. When I was searching for programs, I was drawn to BETA Camp because I knew that the amount of effort I put into it would return back to me in so many different ways throughout the course of my career. BETA Camp was the program which allowed me to cultivate a different mindset and another level of experience altogether to pursue the opportunities I have now. 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

By EILEEN SHERIDAN Quinnipiac University Summer Programs Why did you choose to participate in this program? After attending the Quinnipiac University Open House last Spring, I knew I could see myself going to school there. Quinnipiac moved up on my list to my first choice for college. I figured it would be an amazing opportunity to experience a little taste of what college would be like and would help me confirm what I want to do in the future. The program helped me to confirm that I want to be an Occupational Therapist.

Classes resumed from 1-3pm. At 3:00pm we had the opportunity to hang out with other students until dinner at 5:00pm. After dinner we had an evening activity provided by our amazing counselors and would head back to the dorms at 8pm and be in bed by 10pm. The program also gave us the opportunity to explore different activities in the area. We went hiking at Sleeping Giant State Park, spent a day at the aquarium and zoo. These outings gave us an opportunity to get to know the staff and the other students in the program.

How did you decide which program was right for you? I knew I wanted to choose an occupation in Allied Health Sciences. Allied Health professions encompass a large group of professions. When I received an email about the summer programs being offered, I decided that the Health Exploration Program would be perfect for me because it would give an insight to many healthcare professions, which is exactly what I needed to help me determine what I wanted to do in my future.

What was the most memorable moment of your program? That is a hard question for me to answer! I have many reasons why the program was memorable and unforgettable. First, where else would I have the opportunity to hold a human brain! The program gave me great insight on each profession and that helped me decide that I want to be an Occupational Therapist. Secondly, I met amazing people! The staff were knowledgeable and so friendly. I also made great friends that I still talk to everyday! Thirdly, it allowed me to see what college life was going to be like. This experience helped me realize that I am ready to go away and experience the world.

What was a typical day in your program? I woke up around 7am to get ready and then headed over to the student center for breakfast around 8. After breakfast, we went to the designated classroom. Classrooms changed each day depending on the occupation we learned about. Each class was set up as a hands-on workshop about that specific profession we were learning about that day. Each session had a professional from the field who spoke about what a day in the life of that profession was like. We then had a hands-on activity. The sessions went from 9am-12pm, with a lunch break from 12-1pm.

What advice do you have for teens looking at programs? Do not be scared or nervous! Try them out! I was nervous about leaving my family and giving up two weeks of my summer break, but it truly was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The memories I created during the program will stay with me forever. I created special bonds with other students in the program and I got insight about college life. I suggest that if you are apprehensive about going away to school and not sure what you want to study, find a summer program that interests you and get ready for an unforgettable experience!

Curious about architecture, interior design, landscape design, urban planning, and more? The Boston Architectural College's Early College Program offers high school age students hands-on design exercises with peers and leading professionals around the world. No design experience is required! Learn how YOU can launch a future in design. 42 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

By CONNOR NORRIS Boston Architectual College Summer Programs Why did you choose to participate in this program? I found a profound fascination with Architecture as a prospective career path. Selecting The Boston Architectural College's Pre-College Summer Academy program was a thoughtful decision for me, primarily driven by my acknowledgment of my limited experience in the field of architecture. How did you decide which program was right for you? The Summer Academy program presented itself as an ideal platform to immerse myself in the world of architecture without the extensive commitments of a full-fledged academic program. It provided a condensed yet comprehensive introduction to the key concepts, methodologies, and practical aspects of architecture. This structure allowed me to test the waters, so to speak, enabling me to gauge my interest and aptitude for the discipline before making a more substantial commitment. What was a typical day in your program? A typical day in the program was a dynamic mix of instruction, application, collaboration, and feedback. The mornings often commenced with engaging sessions where seasoned instructors would adeptly demonstrate various design techniques. These demonstrations spanned a spectrum of tools, encompassing both software-based applications and traditional drawing and modeling methods. This comprehensive approach ensured that participants gained proficiency in a diverse set of skills, reflecting the multi-faceted nature of contemporary architectural practice.

Following these insightful demonstrations, the program encouraged active participation and practical application. Students, armed with newfound knowledge, were given the opportunity to implement the demonstrated design techniques. Whether it was navigating sophisticated design software or wielding traditional drafting tools, each participant had the chance to experiment and apply the principles they had just learned. What was the most memorable moment of your program? The hands-on projects, such as constructing a brick archway and designing stick bridges, were a standout feature of The Boston Architectural College's Pre-College Summer Academy program. These physical modeling exercises brought architectural concepts to life, offering a tangible understanding of structural principles and the collaborative nature of architecture. Crafting a brick archway allowed me to grasp the complexities of design and weight distribution, while designing stick bridges integrated engineering principles into creative problem-solving. Beyond technical skills, these projects fostered creativity, resilience, and a collaborative spirit among participants, enhancing the overall learning experience. What advice do you have for teens looking at programs? Embrace the advice to "have as much fun as you can" at Summer Academy—make the most of your experience by relishing your challenges as opportunities for problemsolving, and nurturing a curiosity that drives deeper exploration. I encourage students to identify specific interests within design and architecture that resonate with your passion and strengths. Determining what interests and motivates you during your time at Summer Academy will serve as a compass for your educational journey. 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

HOW SUMMER PROGRAMS CAN BOOST COLLEGE APPLICATIONS BY JANICE HALLER

ummer programs are a great way to explore new interests, follow your passion, and make new friends. You can participate online or in-person; stay overnight, or just attend during the day. You can experience a summer in the woods, in the middle of the ocean, or in the hallowed halls of some of the finest academic institutions in the world. But a question remains: will a summer program boost your chances on your college application? If so, how? What kind of summer program should you look for? How can you use your experience to make you stand out?

SUMMER PROGRAMS CAN HELP YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATION Yes, summer programs can help your college application. But how it can help is up to the applicant and the school they’re applying to. Kate Sonnenberg from KS College Success emphasized that “the program itself matters 44 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

less than what they learn about themselves and how they grow from the summer experience – whether it’s domestic or international service, a pre-college academic program, or an internship…” However, she made it clear that “students must do things that interest them for the intrinsic benefit because it is always impossible to predict what will ‘move the needle’ in college admissions.” In fact, the biggest takeaway students and their families should walk away with is that “[a] ny growth experience is a good experience, as long as the student can explain it to colleges in their application.” “Growth” is a constant running theme in college admissions. No matter the year or the incoming freshman class, college admission boards across the country want to know how their future graduates grew or will grow into their own on campus. However what is considered growth and meaningful isn’t a “one size fits all” situation. Growth depends on the individual, their interests, and their personal shortcomings.

Additionally, Ms. Sonnenberg points out that students can use summer programs as a chance to push “themselves out of their comfort zone” and to be “in community with others” as a way to show growth and the positive impact they had on others. Dr. Eric Endlich, founder of Top College Consultants, suggests you can also use summer programs as a chance to get a sneak peek of what college life could be like. You can attend your dream college’s pre-college program where you can live on campus and socialize with other, like-minded students. While attending a college’s precollege program does not give you an automatic “in” that school, it does show colleges that you are serious about taking the next step to higher education. The experts agree: summer programs can make a meaningful and positive impact on your college applications. So how do you make sure it comes through?

HOW YOU MENTION YOUR SUMMER PROGRAM MATTERS There are many ways you can mention your summer program in your college application. Dr. Endlich points out that platforms like Common App or the UC Application ask you to list activities you participated in during high school. This can be “a great place to spell out how many hours you spent in the program and what you accomplished,” but the space is limited. Not every college or university conducts interviews for incoming freshmen. If you do get an interview, then you have a chance to mention your summer program. However, Dr. Endlich and Ms. Sonnenberg both emphasize that it’s important to mention your summer experience if it is related to the question. Whether it’s an oral interview or an essay, it’s important to focus on answering the question and finding a natural way to mention your experience.

WHAT TYPES OF SUMMER PROGRAMS WILL BOOST MY COLLEGE APPLICATION? While everyone hopes for a clear answer, the truth is that the program that will “boost” a student’s application is wholly dependent on the student. For example, Dr. Endlich points out that students who are applying to a program that requires a portfolio (like art school) will want to look for a summer program that can

46 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

improve their portfolio. He also mentions that students who have a field of study in mind, like becoming a physician, may want to see out programs that do a “deeper dive” into that field. Taking a pre-med program for high school students can indicate a long term commitment to your future. In general, if you are eyeing a highly selective college or university, then summer programs with admissions requirements are considered more favorably. This would be a pre-college program that has an application, essay, letters of recommendation, high school transcript, or some combination of those requirements, and not all students that apply get accepted.

THREE WAYS SUMMER PROGRAMS CAN HELP YOUR COLLEGE APPLICATION College admissions experts Kate Sonneberg and Dr. Eric Endlich have weighed in. What are their key insights and advice? 1. Pick a summer program that can give you insight and a headstart on the next stage. If you need to build up your portfolio or get a sneak peek at life in your future career, then find a summer program that can do exactly that. 2. Don’t force it; mention your summer program if/when it comes up naturally. Whether it’s in an interview, activities list, or an essay, make sure your summer program is mentioned in a way that isn’t forceful. It is a part of your application and not the focus. For example, you could describe your leadership, conflict resolution, or other skills and how the summer program you attended helped you to develop them. 3. Selective summer programs are great, but you need to show growth in the end. While selective programs are indicators to colleges with low acceptance rates, it is not the biggest requirement. Showing that the program resulted in greater selfawareness and personal growth is what matters. TeenLife’s Summer Program section is a great place to begin your search for a best fit program. Start by choosing several interests to explore and then use the remaining filters to narrow down the options. Then, when you have 2 to 4 good options, reach out to the programs for more information. We strongly encourage you to ask to speak to a past participant before making a final decision.

By AMEYALI CASAÑAS Global Leadership Academy I chose to participate in the Global Leadership Academy because for me it was the best summer camp of those I had reviewed. Then, when I attended for the second time, this was because I loved my first time there. I wanted to experience it again so I could be able to learn more about myself in a moment where I felt lost, which helped me a lot. I decided because of the schedule and activities that took place in it, as well as the fact that they give you the opportunity to actually help your own community with a project. It was a great opportunity for me to do something to make a difference because I've always felt that spirit of service in me! I got to do that while connecting with teenagers around the globe, and I was also getting to know a beautiful country and living amazing experiences with incredible people. A typical day starts with getting ready for breakfast and getting to know your roommates. After that we have our morning coffee (not coffee, actually a game!) and then the amazing activities start. It depends on the day because they are all different, but for example the first morning we had lots of activities to get to know each other. Then it’s lunch, then we have another block of activities where you have a lot of fun, either on or off the campus! Believe me, you never get bored! Every activity is made to make you learn and while doing that have fun. After that we have dinner, by the way the food is always really tasty. Then we have the last block of activities, followed by free time, where you can either play, talk to your parents, hang out with your friends, dance, read, and so on. Finally we have lights out at 10 pm, to have a good sleep to get 50 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS 50 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

ready for the next day!! Overall, each day is different and awesome, you get to know people from a lot of countries and backgrounds. The most memorable moment of the program was when my home group and I did our service challenge, which was a fundraiser about protecting the environment and letting people know about this problem that concerns us all. At the beginning we didn't know what direction our service challenge was taking, but at the end, with the help of the staff as well as our ideas as a group and the good atmosphere that we created to work together, we made the service challenge an amazing experience. We learned, had fun, challenged ourselves, and obtained really good results, and lifetime friendships, and experiences. I also loved the creation of everyone's Dream Projects, seeing my home group members working on their passions and ending up with amazing projects. I also loved getting to know different cultures! If you are considering the Global Leadership Academy, I can tell you: Go for it! You won't regret it, believe me. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience! GLA helped me in the process of gaining confidence in myself, knowing my potential, as well as my purpose in life. I truly learned the power of teamwork. Plus, I also learned strategies to use these abilities that I have to develop a project where I can help my community and how to apply the strategies. GLA allows you to find your passions as well as get inspired by others. It helps you build your future in an amazing and positive way! You learn how powerful you are and the impact you have on those around you.

By BRYANAH HOUSTIN Boston Leadership Institute: Intro to Surgery I took Intro to Surgery, described by BLI as a one-week medical program that introduces students to basic surgical skills, such as surgical knot tying and suturing. It allows us to translate these skills to mock surgeries. Students focus on cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery bypass grafting. Students additionally complete, in groups, a slideshow presentation involving cardiothoracic diseases and their surgical treatments. They will then practice their presenting skills as they present their work to the rest of the class. They learn skills that will aid them in the process of applying to and succeeding in pre-med and medical programs in their futures. During my time attending the BLI Intro to Surgery program, I feel that it impacted me in many ways. I learned skills early on that I otherwise would have had to learn further in my academic career. I was taught verbal study hacks by my amazing instructors. These helped me not only remember the materials better but also how to be more attentive. Overall, I learned skills that will help me down the road to further my education and lead me to be the surgeon I one day hope to become. I was able to perform mock surgeries such as a gastric bypass and a CABG as well as learn and apply many different suture techniques that I still practice today. I was also taught the proper way to check someone's blood pressure. This skill enabled me to be able to check my dad’s blood pressure when needed, which I was unable to do prior to my BLI experience. Being involved in hands-on learning helped me understand and

physically see what I was learning to prepare me for the work I will be executing in the future. Apart from the medical skills I took part in, I learned how to be a leader and the importance of collaboration skills. I learned how to work together when in groups/duos and listen to other people's thoughts and ideas. I gained the ability to better my public speaking when presenting my own ideas to my peers. All in all, I learned leadership skills that I now apply to my everyday life. I am involved in multiple clubs at my school, some of which I lead to excel in the community and accomplish great goals. I am forever grateful and blessed that I had the opportunity to learn such amazing things at BLI. 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

By MEGAN VU Future Physicians of America In my quest to pursue a future as a physician, I actively sought opportunities to strengthen my foundations in clinical research while recognizing the significance of collaboration. I specifically chose FPA because ) it was the only high school program I found that guaranteed my being able to perform and actually publish my clinical research and 2) its focus on interactive learning. While teaching me important skills such as advanced cardiac life support, reading an EKG, and managing traumatic wounds, FPA also helped me apply those skills. In fact, my fondest memory was the medical simulation in which we had to resuscitate a mannequin that was actively trying to die on us! This experience accurately represented the urgency of the situation, with the stressful beeping and ominous EKG tracings demanding us to make life-saving decisions on the spot. But FPA wasn't limited to performing CPR. I also learned suturing, splinting, point of care ultrasonography, endotracheal intubation, intraosseous access, using an AED, performing a neurologic exam and draining an abscess. Another huge highlight of FPA was the opportunity to learn how to write a medical paper. The faculty taught me how to perform my own clinical research, including data collection and statistical analysis. I was able to publish 3 papers in PubMed indexed journals by the time I sent in my Early Decision application to Brown PLME. 54 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

A typical day at FPA usually starts off with a lecture, introducing the new knowledge and techniques. Then, the second half of the session is devoted to putting into practice what we learned. And, it's okay to mess up! The faculty provided a comforting, stress-free environment that actively promotes learning. (Thank goodness because I can't sew sutures for my life). Finding good pre-med summer programs can be hard, but a good starting point is to consider your preferred learning methods. For me, I learn best by lectures and hands-on methods. I loved the interactiveness of the faculty, and their ability to break down the complex material. There was a ton of learning, but the small class size made for a lot of engaging discussion, so I also had a lot of fun. And, I also tend to mess up a lot, so the welcoming environment of FPA was a great fit for me. I cannot overstate how great FPA was for me. Because FPA provided me with a solid foundation, I can confidently pursue my academic goals at Brown University as a 1st year PLME student.

IS IT TIME TO LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE?

How Leaving Can Spark Positive Change BY JESSICA A. KENT

ou hear it all the time: Step out of your comfort zone. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Nothing grows in your comfort zone. But is that true? Can getting uncomfortable and enduring the stress that comes with it really help you grow as a person, move you towards achieving your goals, and push you forward to the next stage of your life?

Let’s unpack what “getting outside your comfort zone” means and how it can be your new tool for achieving the life you desire.

THE SCIENCE OF THE COMFORT ZONE So you want to run a 5K. You see a 5K raising money for a good cause, and you’ve always wanted to run one, so you sign up. 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

But you’re not a runner — the most fitness you get is walking between classes — so you know being able to run that 5K is going to take some work and be a bit of a challenge. In other words, you’ll need to step out of your comfort zone, or your place of greatest security, and get uncomfortable in order to achieve that particular goal. How do you know where that boundary is — and is the “comfort zone” even a real thing? The idea of comfort zones is rooted in research conducted by psychologists Robert M. Yerkes and John Dillingham Dodson in 1908. They developed the Yerkes–Dodson Law, which states that performance increases as stress increases, and performance decreases as stress decreases. However, at a certain point, high levels of stress inhibit performance. In the context of our 5K example, this means that while you may just want to just walk on a treadmill to train, there’s not much stress in doing so and therefore no increase in performance. However, when you apply

stress by upping the speed on the treadmill, it gets a little harder and you have to jog. Now you’re actually training. But, setting the speed of the treadmill too high to start won’t be beneficial and may result in injury or propelling you off the treadmill altogether.

THE BENEFITS OF LEAVING YOUR COMFORT ZONE As you train for your 5K, you can see how speeding up your walking pace and pushing yourself to jog — getting outside your comfort zone — can help you develop the fitness, stamina, and mental fortitude to run your race. But there are a number of benefits to moving outside of your comfort zone and challenging yourself to grow beyond just crossing the finish line. Achieving your goals. Not everything you want to achieve in life will be easy. By moving beyond your comfort zone into the growth zone, you’ll be able to do just that: grow. You’ll find yourself becoming more productive, achieving more, and reaching the goals you set for

yourself — if you’re willing to put in the work. Boosting your self-confidence. Accomplishment brings self-confidence, especially if you worked hard, challenged yourself, and saw it through. And the boost in self-confidence you get after achieving one goal can push you to achieve more. Expanding your world. Stepping out of your comfort zone means learning new things, meeting new people, seeing new places, and trying new experiences. All of these can serve to help expand your awareness of the world and how you fit into it and may introduce you to new interests or areas of study you want to explore. Building your resilience. Challenging yourself to move outside your comfort zone can increase your resilience as well. You’ll gain more confidence in how you handle failure or setbacks and become more comfortable with increased levels of stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. Giving you self-agency: Finally, by stepping outside your comfort zone often, you’ll learn more about yourself and gain more control over how you want your life to look and what you want to do with it.

By GLENN MORGAN PARKER Cornell's Online Pre-College Program I attended Charles O. Dickerson High School in Trumansburg, New York. I graduated in June of 2021. I learned about Cornell's Online Pre-College Program through word of mouth and was excited to take a course. So what was my summer online course with Cornell like? I took PSYCH 1990: Sport Psychology, with Dr. Mary Turner DePalma. I was immersed in a class which included both high school and college students. It introduced me to a heavier workload, which I hadn't had the chance to experience in the typical high school setting I was accustomed to. Lectures were thought provoking and challenging, for my younger mind. I always looked forward to class in anticipation of questions my professor would pose. My Cornell Pre-College experience definitely factored into my decision to apply to Cornell for college. I greatly enjoyed Pre-College and found connecting through a professor in higher education incredibly rewarding. I desired experience working in the field of scientific research and Cornell, being a land-grant university with many opportunities, was the perfect environment to pursue research in addition to higher education. As for advice for those applying to the Cornell Summer Online program, I would say as difficult as it may be, I recommend doing all your homework as soon as possible since the courses are very fast paced. Always communicate with your professor and connect with them. Finally, look for a change of scenery—going outside to do my work instead of staying shut in my room often got me through long passages of reading. Today, I am majoring in Biological Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell. 78 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

I think my Pre-College course prepared me on what to expect from Cornell academics. I currently work in a USDA lab under my graduate student mentor focusing on virology projects. The research opportunity and lab experience has been incredibly valuable. One of the best things at about attending Cornell is working at the USDA Heck Lab where I helps prepare experiments for virology research. Not only has the lab work been amazing, but the people are wonderful, making this hands-on work the best experience I’ve had at Cornell so far.

By CARRIE FINROCK New York School of Interior Design Summer Pre-College Program Why did you choose to participate in this program? I discovered NYSID Summer Pre-College while reviewing the College’s admissions application requirements on NYSID.edu. I already knew about NYSID’s great reputation as a college but was not aware of the summer offering courses for high school students. With the local university program I had planned to take being canceled, I got permission from my parents and time off from work to enroll in NYSID’s Summer Pre-College I, which focuses on the basics of residential interior design, drafting skills, understanding floor plans and developing a design concept and color scheme. At the end of the 10-day class, you have a design for a New York City apartment. What was the most memorable moment of your program? “All of it! To be honest, I went into it with relatively low, but optimistic, expectations about the online learning experience. The virtual high school experience that I had during COVID was nowhere near what on-site learning was, so I didn’t know how good a virtual experience could be. Immediately from the first day, I just LOVED it. It completely exceeded my expectations.” In fact, Carrie loved Pre-College I so much that she signed up for Pre-College II to continue the experience and learn more about interior design opportunities related to designing public and professional spaces.

What impressed you the most about NYSID’s Summer Pre-College? “The professors! They were so smart, enthusiastic, and encouraging. They showed me how to build upon and bring my ideas to life. I am still amazed about the amount of information I learned in a four-week period. I have never had another class in school that taught me so much in such a short period of time. And the professors so clearly love what they do–both as interior designers and as teachers. Professor Pam was so passionate in the way she explained an idea she had for a bathroom that I felt like, I want to do that–I want to have a design career that excites me that much.”

IMPORTANCE OF BRAIN-FRIENDLY SUMMER PROGRAMS for Middle School Students BY MORGAN P. APPEL

MITIGATING LEARNING LOSS Summer programs for middle school students— especially those that deliver a mix of focused immersion in content, hands-on engagement, and fun activities—can help reduce the effects of summer learning loss. In certain cases, what has been often referred to as the ‘summer slip’ becomes a few weeks of unfinished learning. In others, it can be months or more. On top of that, studies show that middle school aged students tend to prioritize social needs over academic growth during the school year, leading to loss of motivation and focus. Additionally, learning loss can vary depending on age, subject, and geographic area. This further emphasizes the need for individualized programming to fit a variety of needs and interests.

THE MIDDLE YEARS: A LONG AND WINDING ROAD To say the least, the onset of puberty can prove to be difficult for many reasons. Including navigating more difficult subjects and social pressures; dealing with self-esteem and emotional issues as a result of their 82 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

changing bodies, and managing intense feelings of impulsivity and risk-taking.

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Studies in developmental neuroscience show that in early adolescence the brain is undergoing significant transformations as people grow up. These changes include an enhanced degree of flexibility, increased capacity for decision making, regulation, and judgment, making it ideal for both learning and risk-taking. Supporting cognitive development during this period requires that a summer program is interesting, flexible in structure, and offers fail-safe learning methods. It must also provide multiple opportunities for success to reinforce the student’s sense of persistence. Capability and confidence go hand in hand—especially for the growing adolescent brain. It is similarly important that summer programs use multiple approaches to education as well as build upon previous lessons. This means meeting middle school students where they are and building from that point. This is especially true for summer offerings that tend to be shorter in length than a traditional school year.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT The neurobiological changes outlined above show undeniable impacts on the social and emotional well being of middle school students. Many students are grappling with issues related to self-esteem, developing their identity, and finding their place in social situations. Early adolescence is a period in which young students are particularly sensitive to social recognition, cues, and rewards. Putting the educational aspects aside, effective summer programming for middle school students provides a structured environment that gives opportunities to improve social skills under adult guidance and mentorship that is individualized and future focused. The middle school years also prove to be a critical period in defining a sense of self, which includes habits that help with growth and long term development. These skills are essential for success in school, college, and career. They include creativity, communication, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, problem solving, ability to discern truth from fiction, and resilience, among others. Successfully incorporating these skills across activities is also a hallmark of successful summer programs for middle schoolers.

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT SUMMER PROGRAM FOR YOUR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT? As you explore programming options for summer, please bear the following brain-friendly qualities in mind:

• Make sure the topic is interesting to the student.

It allows them to meaningfully engage and go off the beaten path.

• Uses several different approaches to learning, in-

cluding varied hands-on experiences and situations.

• Encourages healthy social and emotional development, while building a strong sense of self under adult guidance and mentorship.

• Offers the student connections for future success, like higher education or their future career.

BENEFITS OF AN OUTDOOR SUMMER PROGRAM BY JANICE HALLER

ummer is here! Maybe you’re ready for a change of pace, but after two weeks you’re bored of the same routine. So instead of a change of pace, maybe it’s time for a change of scenery?

STEP INTO NATURE FOR A MENTAL RESET Studies show that connecting or being near nature can improve your mental health. If you’re constantly in an urban or crowded environment, you can experience sensory overload without even realizing it. But step into the woods or take a walk by a river, and your brain will start to relax and receive boosts in creativity and problem solving. Experts also believe that nature engages all of the senses, whether you’re aware of it or not. When you’re inside and reading a book or playing a video game, you are mentallystimulated and your energy is driven in one direction. But if you’re outside, you can see, hear, smell, and touch your environment in a way that you can’t in a digital experience.

BE PART OF A TEAM WHERE IT REALLY MATTERS Group projects are a fact of life in a school setting. Dividing up sections of a project or poster board can be painful because it feels forced. But being in a wilderness setting where your roles and responsibilities lead to real life benefits and consequences can be rewarding. Relying on a climbing partner or paddling together down rapids requires trust and commitment to a shared goal. Individual members of the group have the chance to let their skills shine and be appreciated. If you have a knack for organization or a good sense of direction, then taking on a role that showcases it will help you become a vital member of a team.

NATURE ENCOURAGES PHYSICAL WELLNESS During the summer months, many students may find that

84 | 2024 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO SUMMER PROGRAMS

their sleep patterns change. There is nothing to wake up early for, so you start to catch up on sleep but then also start to stay up later. Using screens late at night can worsen the issue, which means students are missing out on the most restorative hours for sleep (11:00 PM to 3:00 AM). On the other hand, being in an environment with regular exposure to natural light can help regulate your sleep and wake cycles. It can even help you to fall asleep more quickly and sleep more deeply. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, regular cardiovascular exercise can spark new growth of blood vessels which feed your brain. If running or hitting the gym is not for you, then what about an activity that offers exercise but doesn’t feel like it? Kayaking, hiking, or biking can be methods of transportation and recreation when you’re out in the wilderness. Regular physical activity can even increase the size of your hippocampus, the seat of memory and learning in the human brain. This could lead to improved memory and focus; ability to multitask, and overall elevated mood.

CHANGING YOUR ENVIRONMENT CAN CHANGE YOU Summer programs are a great way to reset and revive you for the upcoming academic year. But a “reset” can mean different things for different people. Some students may need a real strenuous academic challenge for a sense of accomplishment and a boost of confidence. Others may need a chance to explore a creative passion. Some may need to reconnect with the natural wonders around us. If you are looking for an academic challenge while embracing the outdoors, then look for a summer program that takes the classroom outside. You can learn about marine biology, environmental conservation, veterinary science, and more with the right summer program.
