CITY OF WEST KELOWNA

A NOTE FROM

Office hours: 8:30am-4:30pm Monday to Friday (excluding Stat Holidays) GENERAL INQUIRIES

Mayor Doug Findlater The winter seems to have finally passed and is just a memory. Warm temperatures have arrived and we encourage you to explore the wide range of programs and services in West Kelowna. The 2018 Summer Recreation Guide offers a variety of camps to meet the needs of children and families. This year our camps have been expanded at Mar Jok Elementary School with flexible sign up options for busy schedules. Do you have a young one that loves to sing, dance and act? Dance, music, theatre, leadership and improvisation is for kids interested in performing arts, at Glee Camp. Want to get out and explore the City? Adventure Camps utilize public transportation to explore the community and teach youth about sustainable transportation options. As part of National Health and Fitness Day, post a picture to the City of West Kelowna Facebook page taking part in any of the free recreation activities being offered for a chance to win a Fitness Prize Pack. Enjoy pickleball, tennis, sand

volleyball and many more activities on this fun day of getting fit. Evening Park Play Days have been a big hit and this year have been expanded. Bring a picnic dinner and West Kelowna Recreation will host games and activities for families to enjoy. Evening events are held 5:30pm to 7:30pm and are ideal for families with children ages 2 to 10 years old. Music in the Park and World Music Festival are back again for a summer of free music. Enjoy the exceptional talent of Okanagan artists for Music in the Park, Friday evenings starting July 6th to August 24th. World Music Fest is also back for another year, celebrate the cultural diversity of our region with some of the best world music artists August 25th at the Annette Beaudreau Amphitheatre. Don’t forget to visit the Westside Daze from June 29th to July 1st. There will be free entertainment, a kids’ fair, fireworks and a parade.

Staff Profile Alex Diaz I’ve worked at Johnson Bentley for almost four years and I’ve had a love for swimming and the water for as long as I can remember! I was able to swim underwater before I could even walk, then went on to swim competitively with the Liquid Lightning Swim Club! On top of lifeguarding, teaching lessons and pool maintenance, I’ve coached the Kelowna Aqua Jets swim team for the last two years. I love being outdoors and my hobbies include cross country skiing, hiking, longboarding and camping.

Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.

Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 4 and 18 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children. • Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis. • Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.

778-797-8800 • West Kelowna Recreation & Culture

Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the JumpStart program.

The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store.

Most importantly, with a firm grasp of the Fundamental Movement Skills a child may enjoy a long life of physical activity. This 4.5-hour workshop will provide a comprehensive introduction to the Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) and the core-competencies of the NCCP, with the help of significant hands-on activities.

PREVENT WILDFIRES Nearly half of all wildfires in B.C. are caused by human carelessness. You can make a difference by following a few simple rules.

• Evacuation Alert: Be ready to leave on short notice. If you leave before or during this alert, it’s called a voluntary evacuation

• Heed prohibitions: check for bans and restrictions before striking the match • Camp responsibly: In B.C., campfires can’t be larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres. Keep a shovel or at least eight litres of water nearby to extinguish your fire, and don’t forget to create a firebreak. That means making a one-metre debris-free area around your fire by scraping down to the dirt. Before leaving, ensure your campfire is completely out and the ashes cool to touch. • Phone it in: call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on your cell if you spot smoke, flames or an unattended campfire.

EVACUATION STAGES • Evacuation Order: You are at risk. Leave the area immediately. Local police or RCMP enforce evacuation orders. You are encouraged to register all family members at the reception centre so, emergency responders know that you are safe

• Evacuation Rescinded: All is currently safe and you can return home. Stay tuned for other possible evacuation alerts or orders

BACKCOUNTRY CLOSURES Wildfires can impact backcountry recreation, resulting in area closures or restrictions. Campers and provincial park visitors should check with BC Parks for fire restrictions and closures and recreation site and trail users can check with Recreation Sites and Trails BC.

FIRESMART YOUR PROPERTY More and more people are making their homes in woodland settings. While beautiful, these locations come with a greater wildfire risk. Ensure your home insurance is up-to-date and includes adequate coverage for fire damage. You can also help protect your property by planning ahead. Start by completing a risk assessment in BC’s FireSmart Manual.
