The freezing days of winter are over and it’s time to warm up to spring and enjoy programs and activities being offered by the City of West Kelowna and its partners in recreation. The new Multi-Sport Centre is now open and offering many diverse programs including preschool play, older adult fitness and of course soccer. Thanks to our partnership with the BC Recreation and Parks Association and the Vancouver Prostate Centre, the City of West Kelowna received a grant to subsidize SIRvivor BC: Prostate Cancer Exercise, which allows the City to offer reduced costs to first time participants of this exercise program. The always exciting Re/Max Easter Egg Scramble takes place April 11th at Memorial Park with over 12,000 Easter Eggs to be found. Don’t forget to bring a non-perishable item for the food bank and your Easter basket to store all of those special eggs. National Health & Fitness Day is on Saturday, June 6th. ParticipACTION is also hosting a Community Better Challenge from June 1 – 21. The challenge

PREVENT WILDFIRES Nearly half of all wildfires in B.C. are caused by human carelessness. You can make a difference by following a few simple rules. • Heed prohibitions: check for bans and municipal restrictions before striking the match

• Evacuation Alert: Be ready to leave on short notice. If you leave before or during this alert, it’s called a voluntary evacuation • Evacuation Rescinded: All is currently safe and you can return home. Stay tuned for other possible evacuation alerts or orders

• Camp responsibly: In B.C., campfires can’t be larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres. Keep a shovel or at least eight litres of water nearby to extinguish your fire, and don’t forget to create a firebreak. That means making a one-metre debris-free area around your fire by scraping down to the dirt. Before leaving, ensure your campfire is completely out and the ashes cool to touch.

BACKCOUNTRY CLOSURES

• Phone it in: call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on your cell if you spot smoke, flames or an unattended campfire.

More and more people are making their homes in woodland settings. While beautiful, these locations come with a greater wildfire risk. Ensure your home insurance is up-to-date and includes adequate coverage for fire damage. You can also help protect your property by planning ahead. Start by completing a risk assessment in BC’s FireSmart Manual.

EVACUATION STAGES • Evacuation Order: You are at risk. Leave the area immediately. Local police or RCMP enforce evacuation orders. You are encouraged to register all family members at the reception centre so, emergency responders know that you are safe

Free!

Wildfires can impact backcountry recreation, resulting in area closures or restrictions. Campers and provincial park visitors should check with BC Parks for fire restrictions and closures and recreation site and trail users can check with Recreation Sites and Trails BC.

Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.

Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 4 and 18 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children. • Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis. • Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the JumpStart program.

The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store.

This module is a professional development training tool for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal coaches who coach Aboriginal athletes, as they become certified through the NCCP. In order to educate and promote the value of the NCCP and to establish meaningful participation of Aboriginal peoples in this national program, the ASC embarked on a multi-year process to develop supplemental training material for Aboriginal coaches taking NCCP workshops. The result of this process is the Aboriginal Coaching Modules (ACM), which responds to the need for a national training curriculum with content that reflects the uniqueness of Aboriginal cultures, values, and lifestyles. The workshop is FREE however, registration is required. For more information or to book your own NCCP ACM Coaching Course, contact our Sport Development Coordinator at 250-469-8864.
