ANNUAL REPORT Because of You

ROGER WILLIAMS PARK ZOO MISSION

AS leaders in conservation and animal care, we create engaging experiences that empower guests to join us in conserving wildlife and wild places.

A MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dr. Jeremy goodman 2018 was another busy year filled with accomplishments for Roger Williams Park Zoo and it’s all thanks to you, and donors like you, who share our passion and believe in our mission. Last November, thanks to a bond initiative supported overwhelmingly by Rhode Island voters as well as the generosity of many private donors, the Zoo opened the long-awaited Faces of the Rainforest exhibit to the public. The exhibit which features over 40 species of animals found in the South American rainforest was truly a Zoo-wide endeavor and has become an instant hit with guests. The new experience embodies the Zoo’s new mission statement, “As leaders in conservation and animal care, we create engaging experiences that empower guests to join us in conserving wildlife and wild places.” The updated mission statement was a result of a year-long strategic planning initiative that will help guide our institution for many years to come. The Zoo also welcomed North American otter triplets who were born in our Adaptations area. We also had a banner year breeding and releasing a record 77 threatened New England Cottontails back into the wild and celebrated 25 years of conservation work with the endangered American Burying Beetle. The Zoo also received the prestigious Humane Certification by the American Humane Association demonstrating that animal welfare is a top priority.

throughout the year at both Hasbro’s Our Big Backyard and Carousel Village. We also developed a first-ever youth advisory council where young adults in high school and college from around the state weigh in on Zoo operations and strategy. Roger Williams Park Zoo was named 2018 partner of the year by the Providence-Warwick Conventions and Visitors Bureau for all the work we do bringing tourists to our state and helping to stimulate this important aspect of our economy. Your Zoo remains on the forefront of innovation in our field. This was evident in the fact that eight incredible employees moderated sessions or presented talks at the Association of Zoos and Aquariums conferences this year on cutting edge topics. We are also leading the way in sustainability with plans for our new net-zero energy education center and event pavilion which are underway. Thanks to you, Roger Williams Park Zoo continues to be an incredible asset to the state and the region, and I am proud of all the great things we have accomplished together over the last year.

Your Zoo is a zoo for everyone. To ensure this, we launched several new initiatives this year. We became one of the first zoos in the country, and the first in New England to be certified by Kulture City as sensory inclusive. The certification requires that our entire staff be trained in inclusivity and sensory issues. We hired an inclusion specialist for our Zoo camp and Jeremy Goodman, DVM began special sensory morning programs Executive Director, Roger Williams Park Zoo

A Zoo for the future 2018 was a great year for the Rhode Island Zoological Society/Roger Williams Park Zoo. We had many highlights, but most important was the yearlong effort to engage our over 650,000 guests in conserving wildlife and wild places. As a member of the board of trustees it is my mission, along with all my fellow board members, to ensure that Roger Williams Park Zoo continues to be at the forefront of the zoo movement. We take very seriously the Zoo’s calling to educate adults and children about the importance of preserving wildlife for future generations. Each time I visit the Zoo with family and friends, attend an event or sit in a meeting – I am struck by the dedication of all staff who work so very hard each day to make sure every visitor has a profound zoo experience.

primate families, I know we are making an impact on a child that could someday even become an environmentalist or an animal keeper. There is nothing more gratifying than walking through the zoo on a spring day and seeing so many school groups spending time at the exhibits and asking keepers questions about the life and habits of each animal. There is no better way to learn about conserving species and saving our environment than having fun at the Zoo. What a great 40-acre open classroom we offer to children and adults. We had many successes in 2018 including a terrific Zoobilee, sold-out Brew at the Zoo and a Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular that brought in over 125,000 guests. Those events helped us raise funds we need to continue to produce quality programs and build a zoo for today and tomorrow. I look forward to 2019 and 2020 as we continue to build and expand and bring new and exciting experiences to guests. Hope to see you at the Zoo soon!

Our new Faces of the Rainforest exhibit is a great example of how a few minutes with knowledgeable keepers and Maribeth Q. Williamson exciting animals can make a huge impact on both children Chair, Board of Trustees and adults. When I witness a child marveling at the Rhode Island Zoological Society hyacinth macaws, spying the sloths or delighting in the

New England CoTTONTAIL A year of conservation sucess Thanks to the generous support of our donors like you, we were able to raise more than $20,000 in 2018 to help save the New England cottontail rabbit. Unlike the invasive Eastern cottontail that you see in your own backyard, these vulnerable New England cottontails struggle to adapt as the young forest areas they call home are increasingly developed. Their habitat has declined by 80% in recent years! The money raised from donors just like you helped with the care of these animals before their release into the wild. By breeding this threatened species at the Zoo, our director of conservation programming Lou Perrotti and his team began the process of safely boosting the cottontail’s population. All 77 cottontails received a tag and microchip, and spent a month in a predator-free area in Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge learning to be “adults” before they were released into the wild. Once matured, the rabbits were able to be relocated into wild populations in New Hampshire,Maine and Patience Island - making 2018 the best year on record for the Zoo’s New England cottontail breeding conservation program. This has been a multi-state partnership, and thanks to these collective efforts and your support, the program is achieving its ongoing short-term goals!

SAVING THE GIANTS Global conservation for endangered species Due to donor support in the Zoo’s 2018 fall appeal, a portion of your donation went to the non-profit organization Save the Giants - a community driven conservation organization, dedicated to preserving Guyana’s wildlife via a multi-disciplinary approach with their focal species being the critically endangered giant otter. The money was used to buy camera “traps” - an efficient and minimally invasive way to capture critical data. Using these strategically placed traps, the organization is able to capture images of cubs, identify the sex of otters and track activity patterns. The remainder raised went to care for the Zoo’s giant otters, Romo and Fernando as they continue to teach and inspire visitors of the importance of conserving our rainforests.
