Dear Roger Williams Park Zoo Family,
2022 marked a victory lap in the zoo’s 150 years of history in Roger Williams Park. With your help we celebrated being among the oldest continuously operating zoological parks in the country and began leaning optimistically into the next century-and-a-half. Just joining the Roger Williams Park Zoo team this year, I have been touched by the enthusiasm and loyalty of everyone I meet for their zoo.

what we do
Roger Williams Park Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is home to many endangered species. Our accreditation is assurance that visitors are supporting a facility dedicated to providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for guests, and a better future for all living things. This includes our participation in cooperative conservation and breeding programs to help ensure the future survival of many endangered species. Each time you visit the Roger Williams Park Zoo, make a contribution, purchase an item from us, or share your knowledge about wildlife and conservation, you help us take another step in achieving our mission.
Conservation and environmental stewardship are at the core of our mission. The Zoo actively participates in 55 AZA Species Survival Plans® which propagate endangered and threatened species in zoos.

150th Birthday Celebration
New England’s Zoo Since 1872
In 1872, Ulysses Grant was president; there were 37 states in the union; the U.S. Patent Office issued the first patent; the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened in New York City; suffragette Susan B. Anthony was arrested by a U.S. Deputy Marshal and charged with illegally voting and a portion of Roger Williams Park was officially designated as the Roger Williams Park Zoo. One hundred fifty years later, the Zoo is the third oldest in the United States.
What started as a scattered collection of small animals purely for entertainment has today evolved into one of our region’s foremost centers for conservation and environmental education. In 1986, Zoo became the first zoo in New England to earn accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
In 2022 we celebrated our 150th birthday, and to highlight this historic milestone, the Zoo hosted a once-in-a-lifetime birthday gala. The party was a wild time, allowing guests to engage with our animals and share their stories and generational family memories of the Zoo.

Other festivities during the year included burying a time capsule under the historic sentinel dog and a public birthday party with $1.50 admission that saw over 10,000 people through our gates; it was a record-breaking attendance day.
Thanks to the generosity of our visitors and donors, the Zoo will continue to grow for the next 150 years and beyond.
