Much unseen work goes on behind the scenes at your wonderful Zoo. Even during the cold of winter, our staff is busy caring for the animals, visiting schools, maintaining the buildings and grounds and planning for the Zoo’s future. One of the things that I am very proud of is our participation in the important work done by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The Roger Williams Park Zoo has met the rigorous standards of the association for over a quarter century. Equally as important, our staff are leaders in the profession. Within the AZA and other professional organizations, our staff are involved with committees, teaching professional development classes, presenting at conferences and serving as officers. Our Zoo has an incredible national reputation for being a long time innovative leader in the field. Whether it is a fantastic new exhibit like Faces of the Rainforest or the important work that goes on behind the scenes, we should all be very proud of our Zoo. I know I am! I look forward to seeing you at the Zoo!

As Dr. Jeremy Goodman, executive director of Roger Williams Park Zoo, stated in his remarks that evening “Tonight is four years in the making. It’s a special night and I’m so glad you are here to share it with us. You were pivotal in making this a reality” At the cost of $14M, Faces of the Rainforest is the largest project in the Zoo’s 146-year history: showcasing 35 new animal species and over 100 different plant species. This living building will continue to grow over the next days, months, and years. As the trees fill out and the animals grow their families, your investment will have a lasting impact into the future of this community. As visitors experience the exhibit, they see the expected faces of the rainforest, the unexpected faces, and hopefully themselves. “I know everyone in this room already sees themselves as a Face of the Rainforest. You are also helping the hundreds of thousands of guests that come through this exhibit to see themselves as a face of the rainforest as well,” stated Goodman at the event. Zebras

celebrate International Zebra Day on January 31 by learning about this beautiful animal.

fun fact Scientists don’t have a definitive answer about why zebras have stripes. Maybe the stripes serve to dazzle and confuse predators and biting insects, or to control the animal’s body heat. However, each individual zebra’s stripes are unique so maybe their stripes have a social purpose, helping zebras to recognize each other.

Did you know? Our planet is home to three different species of zebra, the plains zebra, Grevy’s zebra and mountain zebra. All three species are native to Africa. 3

Roger Williams Park Zoo is home to three zebras Samantha, Tundra and Zipper. All three are of the plains zebra species. Their closest relatives are the donkey and the horse.

pigs CELEBRATE NATIONAL PIG DAY Friday, March 3, 2019 Pigs have been a vital part of humans’ lives, with a rich history dating back nearly as far as the domestic dog. So, it comes as no surprise we celebrate this day in their honor!

Learn about the Zoo’s very own honorees:

Babirusa

Did you know? National Pig Day was first established in 1972 by a pair of sisters, one from Texas, one from North Carolina. These siblings recognized that the noble animal deserved a day to “accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man’s most intellectual and domesticated animals.”

Found in the swamp forests of Indonesia, babirusas are the fastest member of the pig family - running at speeds that can match a deer! North Sulawesi babirusas are most famous for their amazing tusks, which only the males possess. Like many pigs, the canine teeth continue to grow throughout the animals life – reaching lengths of up to 17 inches, sometimes growing back into the skull.

Guinea Hog Guinea hogs are a domestic species originally from the Guinea coast of Africa and known as one of the oldest breeds of pigs. Unfortunately, guinea hogs are on the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy Critical List as more domestic hog growers prefer larger, faster growing breeds.

Kunekune Originally discovered in New Zealand, DNA indicates the kunekune pig may actually be from southeast Asia. This pig is one of the most well-known types of domesticated pig in the world. However, it is classified as a rare breed with less than 2,000 pure bred kunekune’s in the world. The Maori people of New Zealand gave them their name ‘Kunekune,’ which means fat and round.

Instead, they stay cool by rolling in the mud. • Baby pigs can recognize their mother’s voice. • Think you’ll beat a pig in a race? Think again. The mammal is surprisingly fast and can clock a 7-minute mile. • While their eyesight isn’t great, pigs have a super sense of smell. (That’s why truffle hunters employ them to sniff out rare mushrooms.)

Frogs CELEBRATE WORLD FROG DAY ON MARCH 20! Frogs are an important indicator of an ecosystem’s health. They keep our ecosystem in balance, eating a variety of insects and small animals to keep everything in harmony. Roger Williams Park Zoo is home to two species of frogs, the dyeing poison dart frog and yellow banded frog.

Did you know? Frogs are amphibians, which comes from the Greek language and means “both lives.” Most frogs are born in water as tadpoles and gradually change into frogs. There are some frogs, known as direct developers, born as full frogs. This species is born and lives far away from water, such as on mountaintops. There are approximately 4,740 species of frogs around the entire world. There are about 90 species of frogs in the United States. About 120 amphibian species, including frogs, toads and salamanders, have disappeared since 1980.

SAVE THE FROGS: Join our team of FROGWATCHERS, and you can help keep amphibians alive! If you want to make a difference in our environment, become a citizen scientist and join the FrogWatch team. Zoo staff will train you at a special workshop. The trainings teach interested participants how to monitor our local frog population and protect them. Trainings are Sunday, March 31 or Saturday, April 6 from 1:00 – 3:30 pm at the Zoo. For more information visit rwpzoo.org/family-programs/family-fun

Harbor Seals

Celebrate the International Day of the Seal on March 22

Seals are just adorable. However, sadly they are one of the most hunted marine mammals in the world driving them to near extinction. Humans catch and kill them for their blubber, meat and pelts. Celebrating International Day of the Seal raises awareness and promotes conservation of seals worldwide. Roger Williams Park Zoo is home to two harbor seals Action and Bubba. If you stop by the seal house you will notice that Action is lighter in color and has a lot of spots on his back (you could call it a little more “action”). Bubba is darker and is more solidly colored on his back. They were born two days apart at SeaWorld and joined the Roger Williams Park Zoo in 2001.

fun fact The harbor (or harbour) seal (Phoca vitulina), also known as the common seal, is found along temperate and Arctic marine coastlines of the Northern Hemisphere. The most widely distributed species of pinniped (walruses, eared seals, and true seals), inhabit the coastal waters of the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Baltic and North Seas.

Did you know? Harbor seals are wild animals, and it is against the law to disturb harbor seals and other marine mammals. • Females outlive males - 30-35 years versus 20-25 years – in the wild. • A fatty tissue called “blubber” keeps seals warm. • The harbor seal can plunge 300 feet and stay underwater up to 28 minutes. • Most harbor seal pups shed a white wooly coat when they are born. • The mother nurses the pup with rich milk for three to six weeks. • If you watch Action and Bubba you will see that when they are on land, they move in a caterpillar-like motion.

What you need:

3. Add sea creatures/shells. 4. Fill the rest of the bottle with oil, leaving a little air space at the top. Optional: Use a layer of hot glue (ask a parent to help) around the outer edge of the cap for added protection from leakage.

How many species thrive in the deep sea where no light penetrates the ocean waves? A. B. C. D.

Try this: • Gently rock the bottle on its side to create waves inside your ocean habitat! • The more you shake the bottle, the more the bubbly the ocean becomes. Set your bottle down occasionally to let the bubbles settle, and then start all over again. • Turn this craft into a science project! Explain to your little one why oil and water don’t mix. Make a conservation connection by also explaining how oil spills can effect marine life and the environment.
