ANNUAL REPORT Because of You

ROGER WILLIAMS PARK ZOO MISSION

engage PEOPLE in extraordinary and unique educational experienceS, Improve understanding of and appreciation for the natural world, AND contribute significantly to the conservation of our earth’s animals, plants and other natural resources.

You welcomed home Angel, one of the Zoo’s newest additions who will make her home in the immersive Faces of the Rainforest exhibit. 2

2017 ANNUAL REPORT

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 2017 was another great year for Roger Williams Park Zoo and it’s all thanks to you, and donors like you, who share our passion and believe in our mission. Last year, your Zoo became the first in New England to ever exhibit a Komodo dragon. We designed Elsie’s new home in-house thanks to the generosity of the Lorber Family. The Zoo also announced a new partnership with the Rhode Island-based apparel company, Ivory Ella, who is sponsoring the Zoo’s elephant yard. We rely heavily on the generous donations of people like you to make needed upgrades and build new exhibits that ensure our animals and guests are provided with the best environments possible. In addition to a Komodo dragon, we welcomed several new animals to your Zoo. The African Plains exhibit hosts two new Watusi cattle who reside with the zebras and wildebeest. A flock of wild turkeys joined our pronghorn in their habitat, and a pair of Kunekune pigs now live in the Alex and Ani Farmyard. The year was also filled with cranes, bulldozers, and backhoes as construction of the new Faces of the Rainforest exhibit – the largest single project in the Zoo’s 145year history – began to rise from the ground in the western-most corner of the Zoo’s campus. The exhibit, which will feature animals from the South American rainforests, will open in late 2018. Many of our Zoo family have banded together to make this project come to fruition. Thank you to all of our donors, staff, and partners. You truly are 3

Your help brought the rainbow boa home! This slithering friend is an important animal ambassador of the new Faces of the Rainforest exhibit.

the Faces of the Rainforest. Also new in 2017, an already great experience at our Zoo became even more fun with the opening of the new Explore & Soar area over Labor Day weekend. This area features a train ride, camel rides, and Rhode Island’s only zip ride attraction: the Soaring Eagle zip ride! Guests zip backwards over 600 feet to a height of 11 stories, enjoying an incredible view of the park and downtown Providence before they zip back down to the ground - all while safely harnessed. The revenue from all of the new attractions will enable the Zoo to further its mission of conservation, education and animal care. So take a ride and help our mission soar! The Zoo’s signature Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular event also continues to be a huge success. In addition to all of the national coverage this unique fundraiser garners annually, 2017 featured a live broadcast from the show onto one of Tokyo’s largest morning television programs, putting Little Rhody’s Zoo in the spotlight to an audience almost 7,000 miles away! Thanks to you, Roger Williams Park Zoo continues to be an incredible asset to the state and the region, and I am proud of all the great things we have accomplished together over the last year.

Jeremy Goodman, DVM, Executive Director, Roger Williams Park Zoo

OUR ZOO FAMILY: A VITAL RESOURCE Roger Williams Park Zoo is home to more than 100 different species of animals, 200 volunteers, 350 staff and thousands of members and donors like you. As I look at the amazing work our Zoo family has accomplished in 2017, I am overwhelmed with the difference our Zoo makes in the lives of so many in the New England region. Conservation is of vital importance globally and locally. I am proud of the Zoo’s continuing work in local conservation to ensure the survival of the American burying beetle. Thanks to your support, Roger Williams Park Zoo continues to lead efforts to ensure that this carrion beetle survives and thrives. Why care about a beetle? Every species - no matter how small - has an important place in the ecosystem, and we continue to share that message with all our Zoo family and visitors. Your support goes even further by sharing with our community’s youth the importance of saving all wildlife and making sure our planet thrives. Through education programs here at the Zoo or at our neighborhood schools, Zoo programs expose children and families to the joys of nature through interaction with ambassador animals. In 2017, families toured the Textron Elephant Pavilion for a first-ever open house, had breakfast on the Marco Polo Trail, and slept overnight at the Zoo to learn how the animals are cared for during each new day. Also this past year, camp staff worked in conjunction with the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism, Inc. to provide camp scholarships for children on the spectrum. While at Carousel Village, sensory-friendly time on the first Tuesday of the month invited those with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other sensory needs to enjoy a ride on the carousel. No matter how children interact with the Zoo, their engagement with an armadillo, a porcupine, or any animal will make an impression that will last a lifetime. Our children are our future and you make it possible to share with them a love for the natural world. 4

I am grateful to the entire Zoo family - you, our donors, staff and volunteers who commit their energy and passion to the Zoo’s important mission: engaging guests in an extraordinary and unique educational experience to improve their understanding of and appreciation for the natural world. I look forward to meeting you at the Zoo!

ANIMALS AND THEIR CARE Your support provides important geriatric and end-of-life care.

We remember two of the Zoo’s most beloved animals who died in 2017.

October 2017 Gina, a dromedary camel, joined the Zoo family in May 1996 and passed in October 2017. She was a favorite with guests - and dearly loved by staff and volunteers alike. She shared a home with her long-time friend Sasha on the Marco Polo Adventure Trail, and together they represented a species of camel native to northern Africa and southwestern Asia.

November 2017 Amber, the cherished 26-year old Masai giraffe, joined the Zoo family in May 1992, and was the oldest Masai giraffe in North America at the time of her passing. In her later years, Amber lost her sight due to cataracts. Through a lot of hard work and a trusting relationship built over many years, the animal care staff was able to help Amber adjust to her blindness - and maintain a good quality of life for an extended period at the Zoo. Everyone at the Zoo misses Amber and her sweet demeanor.

ZOOKEEPER’S CIRCLE We would like to thank the following donors who have become part of the Zookeeper’s Circle. You are an exclusive group of friends dedicated to maintaining the Zoo as an important cultural and educational asset for Rhode Island.
