It’s always great to catch up with you all on the other side as we begin to navigate new beginnings and get stuck into 2023 in true Luxe style. Now, we know you’re swamped with information and motivation at this time of year - be it fitness tips and ‘Veganuary’ recipes, or wellness breaks and healthy habits - we’re scrapping all of that in this issue, because in January, more than any other month, there’s nothing we need more than a warm embrace and plenty of lovely stuff to indulge in. So you’ll see no ‘Dry January’ here - apart from the fact that I am expecting my second baby very soon (more on that later!) - we’re talking wine recommendations, international travel plans, super staycations to stick in the diary, and plenty of good stuff to ensure good times as we kick off the new year as we mean to go on.

All of that, plus an appearance from a very exciting cover star - the one and only Kammy - a look inside the home of Rowen Homes’ Alice Hall, and why Sally McGee is creating a community of female surfers in Tynemouth.

We’ve got some fantastic faces in this issue, and we can’t wait to share their stories in the pages that follow.

GREAT NORTH RUN 2023

The Great North Run is without doubt the biggest fundraising event of the charity calendar. Over 60,000 runners took part last year, raising thousands for their charities of choice whilst representing them proudly on their chests. Recognition of a foreign divorce

to him was “transnational” in nature and could not be recognised in England and Wales, so he sought an order that the marriage be annulled which basically means that the marriage was never valid in the first place. This is hugely significant if finances are at stake.

Mrs Parveen’s first husband pronounced the Talaq (Islamic divorce) in England in written form by way of a letter. The letter went to the Bradford Mosque, and this was converted into a divorce certificate.

The divorce certificate was sent to Mrs Parveen in Pakistan and accepted by the Local Union Council in Pakistan. Mrs Parveen argued that the divorce to her first husband should be recognised as courts in England and Wales do have jurisdiction to question the validity and recognition of the overseas divorce.

I often come across situations where issues surrounding where an Islamic religious marriage (the Nikah) or divorce (the Talaq) is called into question when taking place in England. More often than not it is where the Nikah has taken place in England but then there is no additional civil ceremony so their marriage will not be recognised as legally valid under English law. This creates all sorts of problems because the parties are classed as cohabitees and the law for cohabitees is much more limited than that of a couple

who have a legally valid marriage.

It has also been found to create difficulties for a party who thought they were divorced under English law as the divorce is recognised in Islamic law but not in English Law. A recent case highlighted how Islamic divorces are recognised in the courts of England and Wales.

This issue arose in the case of Hussain v Parveen 2021 EWFC 73, which examines the issues that should be considered in respect of the recognition of foreign divorces.

In this case Mr Hussain (petitioner) argued that Mrs Parveen (respondent) was still married to her first husband as the divorce

The key issue in this case was whether this was a transnational divorce. Unfortunately for Mrs Parveen, the courts found that the divorce was transnational in nature and was not accepted as a divorce in this jurisdiction. The reason being that whilst the Talaq was accepted in Pakistan, having been initiated in England and concluded in Pakistan, it was found that as not all the steps regarding the divorce had taken place in Pakistan, then the first divorce was not capable of being recognised in this jurisdiction as an ‘overseas divorce’. If initiating Islamic divorce (Talaq, Khula, Faskh) then it is clear that the whole process must be done in the country that the legal marriage took place but if the marriage took place in England and Wales being an Islamic marriage followed up with a civil registration of the marriage, then parties must issue divorce proceedings in the courts of England and Wales. Likewise, if the Nikah has taken place in England, you must ensure that you also have a civil ceremony so as to have a legally valid marriage.

Three reasons you love where you live? A Londoner born and bred, I never thought I would end up in such a rural area, but I love the warmth and friendliness of the people, the amazing coastline and the starry sky.

What do you do for a living? This year marks 25 years of running Armstrong Keyworth, an interior design consultancy. I’m also celebrating the publication of my first book on interior design, ‘The New Country - city style for rural living’.

A day in the life of you? It is very varied. Today I have been on two site visits, talking to plumbers and electricians, but I could just as easily be in the office working on design schemes or (my favourite bit) sourcing beautiful materials and furniture for my clients.

Any upcoming or ongoing projects we should know about? It is a varied portfolio at the moment - complete refurbishment of two flats near Harrods, and the colour scheme for the parish church in my village.

What does downtime mean to you? A walk on Cheswick Beach with our cavapoo Freddie, or a glass of wine by the wood burner in our converted church home.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? I always wanted to be an interior designer, but I had a more sensible hotel marketing career before changing to my real love in my mid 30s.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you? When my daughter was at junior school, I was moaning to one of the mums at the gate about how stressed I was over a wooden floor a client didn’t like. She was a paediatric consultant and said, ‘I’m a bit stressed too - I have the funeral of a two-year-old patient I lost this morning’. I always make sure I try to put things in perspective after that moment.

What is your greatest fear? The heating bill! Which living person do you admire most and why? My daughter, Georgia. She graduated from Newcastle University last year with a first class degree in politics, despite Covid interruptions and lecturer strikes, and now has a high flying job in the civil service. On top of that she is charming, funny and beautiful - but of course, I’m biased.

What is top of your bucket list? There is a new luxury train launching in Italy called Orient Express La Dolce Vita. The interior design of the carriages looks out of this world.

What is your most treasured possession? A Cartier Divan watch that my husband Gavin bought for my 40th birthday. What does the weekend mean to you? One thing I love about Northumberland life is that people entertain a lot at home - so at the weekend, I love to cook or be cooked for by our lovely neighbours in the village. A memorable holiday? My late mother was a travel agent, so I started travelling abroad very young, but a trip to Brazil and Argentina with my husband and daughter has to be the standout trip. Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro and the Iguazu Falls are forever lodged in my memory. Best dress? A DSQUARED2 dinner suit - not only very chic, but quite fitted, so it keeps me from too many Greggs sausage rolls when I have a black tie event coming up. Who would be your top three dinner guests? The starry sky presents a whole new world of adventure and opportunity, as Elysia Fryer finds out during a preview of February’s North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales Dark Skies Festival

Winter’s enchanting dark nights don’t just mean shorter days and an excuse to wrap up at home by the fire, it means we have even more opportunity to get out and explore the deep, dark starry skies on our doorstep.

Back in October, we were lucky enough to be invited to experience North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales Dark Skies Fringe Festival, previewing some of the sensational stargazing events coming to Yorkshire this February as part of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales Dark Skies Festival (10 - 26 February).

If, like me, you are so over the winter ‘slumber’ and looking for fun activities to encourage you outdoors, then why not turn your gaze to the sky? With a whole host of inspiring events and workshops in the calendar, this year’s Dark Skies Festival is the perfect opportunity to do so.

This year marks the eighth Dark Skies Festival, inviting families, first-time stargazers and those looking to expand their knowledge, to discover just how special the dark skies are here in Yorkshire.

With everything from night runs and yoga sessions, to zip wires, children’s trails, stargazing safaris, mindful experiences and astrophotography workshops, there’s

something for everyone when night falls in two of the country’s best-loved National Parks.

Why Yorkshire? Well, the combined area of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales represents the largest protected area in the UK - and one of the biggest in Europe - meaning we’re in the ideal location to explore and celebrate the jewels of the night sky.

By supporting and nurturing National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we are doing our bit to protect the starry skies for the benefit of our own wellbeing and education, as well as the wildlife living around us.

Go here on a clear evening and you’ll see the Milky Way in all its glory. Throw in Astro Dog’s experts and some nifty telescopes, and you’ll see stars up-closeand-personal, pickimg out planets, nebulae and galaxies too.

Astro Dog (headed up by Nicole, Sam and Astro Dog herself, Luna) - our friendly hosts - are based at the Stargazing Hub right at the heart of Dalby Forest. As day-trippers pack up and leave, we’re entering the forest for an immersive evening gazing up at the night sky.

Not only has Dalby Forest been awarded Milky Way Class skies by Dark Sky Discovery, it has also been designated as an International Dark Sky Reserve by the

International Dark Sky Association. We are fairly new to the stargazing world, but as one of only 19 designated reserves in the world, we know this is kind of a big deal.

From their early days capturing images of the Perseid meteor shower using a DSLR camera, Nicole and Sam have furthered their knowledge and are now in a position to host seriously inspiring events and workshops, created to educate and excite stargazers new and old, of all ages.

The event includes a tour of the stars above us - and with perfectly clear conditions on a crisp late-autumn evening - before we know it, we are well versed on the basics of navigating the night sky. Telescopes allow us to explore planets in more detail and

For our Dalby Forest Dark Skies adventure, we laid our heads at the beautiful White Swan Inn in Pickering, just a short drive from Astro Dog’s Stargazing Hub. We were greeted by a friendly team of local hoteliers, wined and dined in the proper Yorkshire restaurant and made to feel at home in a comfortable room complete with luxury en-suite, perfect for warming up with a bubble bath after a chilly evening under the stars.

A hearty Yorkshire breakfast the following morning was the perfect end to an indulgent and inspiring stargazing stay near Dalby Forest.

Speaking up

It’s been a surreal couple of years for Chris Kamara MBE - legend of sport and screen - as he battles with a speech disorder and the lifestyle adjustments that come with it. That being said, there’s never a dull moment in his presence, Elysia Fryer finds as she sits down for a cuppa with Kammy…

It’s December 2022 and it has been three months since Chris Kamara, 65, spoke out about his battle with a speech disorder. We never thought we’d hear the animated sports broadcaster and telly favourite stuck for words, but after navigating an incredibly difficult time coming to terms with his apraxia diagnosis, it was time to speak up and share his story with the world.

I arrive at Kammy’s home in Wakefield on a crisp winter’s morning, wondering and hoping if today is going to be a good day to talk. He has discussed, in previous interviews, his daily worry of whether or not he will be able to speak when he wakes up and starts the new day.

I don’t think I’m the only person who feels like they already know Kammy. For me, a regular fixture in our family home growing up, as Sky Sports News would set the soundtrack of the weekend. The familiarity goes a long way in putting both parties at ease as we sit down at the kitchen table over a cup of tea. A refreshingly honest conversation about life, health, a shared love of Teesside and the wonderful world of football.

Amidst the rush of Christmas and all the commitments that come with it, we’re both just happy to be sitting still with a cuppa. “I’m totally snowed under with work at the minute, would you believe?” he starts.

“I was about to pack it all in about a year ago when I was diagnosed with apraxia of speech.

“First of all, after not feeling myself for some time - and trying to ignore it as much as possible - we discovered that I had an underactive thyroid. When they identified that we thought ‘great, that’s the answer to all of my problems’. They put me on medication and I found my level, eventually. “I was better in myself, but my speech was

still hit and miss. I had MRI scans and one of the first things that sprung to mind was dementia - obviously that is a big subject at the moment with footballers and the long-term effects of heading the ball.

“I got the all clear after the MRI scan, then I went for a DaT scan, which is a detailed look at the brain, often used on stroke victims. That’s when we discovered the apraxia. We think it’s linked to the thyroid, but we can’t be one hundred percent certain.”

With such a public facing job, and being such a friendly and familiar face for so many across the country, Kammy had a tough time trying to hide his condition from the world.

“I was about to call it a day when Ben Shepherd invited me to speak on Good Morning Britain.

“Ben is a good friend of mine and knew I’d been having problems, so, even though it was going out on live TV, I felt comfortable in his company and decided to take the opportunity to speak up.”

Kammy had been struggling with his health for over a year, and, in his own words, ‘felt like a fraud’ as he continued to work in TV.

“From the day I did the GMB interview, I started to get better, which my therapist had already predicted. It was a huge weight off my shoulders.

“She said to me, ‘once you accept your condition, rather than hiding it, you’ll improve’ - and she was right. Since then, the work hasn’t dried up at all, I’m as busy as I’ve ever been.”

Kammy is one of the most humble people I have met. He struggles to accept that employees and viewers are happy with his output while he continues to struggle with his speech. But like all employees have said to him, ‘a little bit of Kammy is better than no Kammy at all’, and I’m sure viewers will agree.

“I didn’t want this condition to stop me

working,” he says.

“But I also knew that having this condition wasn’t good for me, or for the viewers. Live TV was hard for me, so working for Sky was getting increasingly difficult.

“My anxiety, which I didn’t even know I had previously, was really bad. Before this, you could put me on any stage and I wouldn’t even think about getting nervous, but then all of a sudden I’m doing these Sky interviews I’d been doing for 24 years with Jeff, and my heart is beating and I’m struggling to get the words out.

“My time at Sky was incredible,” he says with a smile.

“To have had another career after football was amazing, and Sky gave me that, which I’ll forever be grateful for. But it was time to move on.”

While undergoing tests and struggling to ‘give his all’, Kammy was juggling multiple projects and appearances across TV and broadcasting.

“When I found out about my condition, my agent and I sat down with Channel 4 because I was starting Cash in the Attic,” he starts.

“I said I didn’t feel like I could do it but they were very supportive and insisted that I continued.

“The BBC and ITV have also been brilliant. Back in May, we were working on a programme called The Games which saw celebrity contestants take on sporting challenges. I was the co-commentator on

that, and they were also adamant that they wanted me to continue. Funnily enough, commentating was fine. You use a different part of the brain for that, as you do with singing.

“Another strange discovery… if I speak in a Scottish accent, ‘no problem’,” he laughs, in a broad Scottish accent.

“I guess I could go Scottish and speed up my speech, but it’s not me, is it? People just want me to be me, which is incredibly flattering. Really and truly, if I started speaking to everyone in Scottish, they’d tell me to do one!”

These days, between his many work commitments, which have included a new docu-series, Chris Kamara: Lost for Words on ITV, BBC Sounds’ ‘Kammy & Ben’s Proper Football Podcast’, ITV’s DNA Journey and much more, life is very much about his grandkids and the animals he keeps on the land at his home in West Yorkshire.

“The grandkids have changed our lives completely,” he smiles.

“Anne and I are totally smitten. People have always said, ‘wait until you have grandkids’, but it’s not until you actually have them that you realise how much your heart can double and triple in size.

“We have four grandkids - two of each from my two sons, Jack and Ben. Jack lives next door and Ben lives in Leeds, so we’re all incredibly close, which is great.

“During Covid, Ben moved here with the kids, so we had four months of incredible chaos. Every single day, my grandson Solomon and I would go down and feed the animals together and we’d be missing for hours. Now, I can’t even get him to come down there with me, so that time was really special.”

Times were hard back then. We were the first black family on our estate. I sort of just had to accept that I was different growing up. Something that always sticks in my mind is my dad telling me to ‘never let

the next venture - sometimes at the drop of a hat. Moving into TV was a blessing in that, despite travelling to London to work every weekend, he was able to set up home with his family in West Yorkshire. He’s lived in Wakefield with his wife Anne and two sons (who have since flown the nest and started families of their own) since 1990.

“Family life has always been important,” he says.

“So I’ve had to make the sacrifice of working in London every weekend, but I never wanted to move the family again after we settled here. It has been nice to have a constant, and now our boys have grown up and started families of their own, it’s wonderful to have them all nearby.”

Creating a strong family unit and support network has always been important to Kammy, something he struggled with growing up in Park End, Middlesbrough in the 1950s.

“Times were hard back then,” he starts. “I was born in 1957. We were the first black family on our estate, so as you can imagine, it wasn’t easy. The whole country was racist. Nobody had any sympathy or empathy for you in those days, you just got on with it.

“You just had to accept it back then. There

was no hiding behind a social media account, people actually said it to your face - and got away with it! You couldn’t do anything about it. It was unacceptable for you to confront anyone or complain about it.

“I was a kid, so it impacted my dad more than it did me. It’s only when you start to get that little bit older when it really hits home. I sort of just had to accept that I was different growing up. Something that always sticks in my mind is my dad telling me to ‘never let it hurt you’.

“That’s why I sometimes, controversially, look at things in a slightly different way. When people say footballers should come off the pitch when somebody gets racially abused - even by one single person in a 40,000 crowd - I don’t agree. We fought too hard to put up with bananas being thrown at us and the whole ground singing racist words to just walk away from it. I’m sticking by the notion that they should just get the racist individual out of the ground.”

Kammy was lucky enough to have good friends around him during his school days - friends he still holds dearly today.

“Steve Gibson (chairman of Middlesbrough Football Club) and I were in the same class from the age of 5 until we were 15,” he says.

“We grew up together. It was a pretty close-knit community, so it wasn’t as bad, for me, as it could have been.”

Managing to stay on the straight and narrow throughout his school days, Kammy had his first taste of a career in football when he joined the ‘Boro Boys’ team in senior

school, but when the coach proposed an apprenticeship with the club, his dad had other plans.

“He said, ‘he’s not staying round herehe’ll be locked up before you know it!’.

“He made my brother George, who is no longer with us, join the Army, and he did the same with me. He frogmarched me down to the recruitment office and off I went to sign on for the Navy.

“As you can imagine, I was completely devastated. When my boys were 15 and 16-years-old, I wouldn't dream of forcing them to do anything. But, having said that, I’m grateful for it, because my stroke of luck came later.”

So, leaving Boro behind, off young Chris went to the Navy base in Cornwall, and it wasn’t long before he got a game for the Navy football team.

“I scored a couple of goals against Portsmouth, they expressed interest and bought me out for £200!

“I had to get a letter from the Admiral of the fleet, HMS Nelson, to write a letter to my dad to say that if it doesn’t work out as a footballer, they would have me back in the Navy.

“My dad couldn’t do anything about it at that point because I was a long way from home. There was no way he was going to come down and scupper that chance.

But to keep him happy, I made sure I got that letter.”

At aged 16, he made his way into the first team before moving on to Swindon, where he met his wife Anne in the 1970s.

Moving between Swindon, another spell at

Portsmouth, Brentford and Swindon again, he gradually made his way back up north as he succeeded as a tough-tackling midfielder.

“I went from Swindon to Stoke, and then had the opportunity to sign for my hometown club, Middlesbrough,” he says. A big career moment for Kammy.

“As a boy, my ambition was to play for Middlesbrough, and my dream was to play for Leeds. People say, ‘how can you have two clubs?’. Well, when I was growing up, Boro were in the third division and Leeds were the top team around - I couldn’t support Sunderland or Newcastle - so I adopted Leeds and that’s why it became my dream.

“So I found myself in this massive dilemma. I had been given the forms to go and sign for Boro, but I’d been told to make a call to Howard Wilkinson at Leeds.

“I was told to drop in on my way up to Middlesbrough for a quick chat. Wet behind the ears, as I was then, I got to Elland Road, spoke to Howard and they wouldn't let me out of the office until I signed, which was the best negotiation skills I’ve ever seen! “They kept offering me more and more, but the reason I wouldn’t sign was because my best and oldest mate, Steve, was the chairman at Boro. It was an incredibly tricky situation. I couldn’t let him down. “Eventually, for the third time of trying to leave the office, the managing director Bill Fotherby slammed this contract down on the table and said, ‘sign that now, or it’s not there tomorrow’.

“It was double their first offer - and then some. I was sitting there thinking ‘Leeds is my dream and Boro is my ambition’ - eventually, it was too late to go to Boro, so I signed on the dotted line and that was that.

“I drove home to Anne and explained the situation. We should’ve been celebrating like we’d won the lottery, but it was tainted by the upset of not going to Middlesbrough. “We were sitting there all glum and the phone rang. It was Steve. He understood the opportunity and said, ‘remember, it’s your dream - go and enjoy yourself mate!’.” After his time at Leeds, he enjoyed spells at Luton, Sheffield United and Bradford, before kickstarting his coaching career. It turned sour at Stoke in 1998, an opportunity came up in TV, and he’s never looked back.

A cult-hero commentator was born.

“That all came about after I stood in for an extra game after covering the Sheffield United vs Sunderland game on Sky.

“Gerry Francis, who was Bristol Rovers manager at the time, was doing the second game of the day but got stuck on the M4, so they asked me to stay on air.

“I did six hours of telly and two games of football that day, and so I became the go-to guy. Whenever I could fill in, they would ring me - that’s how it started.

“It just came so naturally to me. I was never phased by it at all.”

Since the day he packed up to join the Navy, Kammy has never returned to live on Teesside. He does, however, visit regularly to follow ‘the Boro’ and catch-up with old pals, and is a big believer in your hometown shaping your future.

“You must never, ever forget where you came from,” he says.

“Even though I left Middlesbrough at 16, and have never lived back there since, it is part of my history and that is so important.

“Steve Gibson is my oldest friend in the whole wide world. We followed each other’s careers right through to now, and he’s still one of my best friends.

“I don’t have much contact with distant family back in Boro, but I have some really close friends who will always be a huge part of my journey, and my life today.

“I like to call in for a parmo every now and then, of course!”

When he’s not working, Kammy enjoys the slower pace that comes with life in West Yorkshire.

“I love to spend time outdoors with my animals,” he says.

“We have horses, sheep, chickens and cats. We did have two ducks until recently, but the fox (that we feed!) got them,” he laughs.

“Between the animals and the grandkids, I’m keeping busy!”

As we pour another cuppa from the pot before we pop our coats on and head out to see the animals, Kammy reflects on a very surreal time.

“I still can’t watch myself on the telly,” he starts.

“I don’t look like me. I don’t sound like me. That’s another barrier that I am going to have to try and get around and work on.

“But I’m in a great position really - there are so many people worse off in this world.”

Harlow Collection’s handmade designs are providing us with fashion inspiration for the year ahead. Nicole Wood chats to Hannah Wilson, founder and creator of the Gateshead-based business…

There’s nothing more satisfying than spending that first week in January with your brand new diary (always a great Christmas present!) and putting pen to paper. It’s that fresh start feeling we all look forward to after sadly saying goodbye to the festive decorations.

As we sit down and start to fill our diaries with exciting plans, special occasions and holidays for the year ahead, our thoughts can quickly turn to the dreaded ‘what will I wear?’.

The world of fashion is ever changing and it can be hard to keep up with the latest trends. That’s why I went in search of a fashion brand that aims to be timeless, classic and everlasting. A little bit of indulgence, but also an investment.

Harlow Collection launched back in January 2020, with a vision to reduce waste and build a capsule collection for women. The brand’s goal is for women to wear their pieces forever - providing wardrobe staples that can be pulled out season after season, styling with items you already own as well as other pieces from the brand.

Hannah Wilson, the creative brains behind the brand, develops and makes each and every piece here in the North East. From concept to the final packaging, everything is produced in-house on a made-to-order basis.

“I studied Fashion Design at Cleveland College of Art & Design in Hartlepool, and I never stopped making clothes once I graduated,” Hannah starts.

“I've always been interested in fashion and have had different retail and visual merchandising jobs over the years. I learnt a lot from my time at uni and then after that I joined various classes and courses and watched countless YouTube videos.

I love trying new things and experimenting with pattern cutting and design - I don't think you ever really stop learning and I'm always open to finding out more.”

With a wealth of experience and a passion for fashion and design, when the opportunity presented itself, creating her very own clothing brand seemed like the obvious path for Hannah.

“I've always loved making clothes and after studying fashion at university, it just

seemed a very natural thing for me to progress into. I didn't really think too much into it, I just went ahead and did it. I've just always made clothes and designs that I know I would wear, and I think that's why I enjoy it so much as it's still always very personal to me,” she tells me.

“I'm really inspired by simple, classic designs. Chic and minimal. I love French, Parisian and Scandi styles. Of course, it’s important to keep up with trends and be inspired by what I see around, but I like to alter that a little to create something timeless.

“When it comes to fashion, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Lovisa Barkman and Felicia Akerstrom, to name a few, are all great inspirations. I think having a simple, classic style makes it so easy to get dressed and in turn makes you feel good - so I try to show that through my designs. I like to create very versatile pieces you find yourself reaching for time and time again. Pieces you can incorporate into your everyday wardrobe, not just for ‘best’.

“I tend to visualise a lot in my head and find a lot of inspiration from the likes of Instagram and Pinterest, items I already own or have owned in the past, or something I just can't find and know will make a great piece.

“Strangely enough, I don't often draw the design first, I just get stuck straight into pattern cutting. I use the same templates for most of my designs and just adapt as I go with the fit throughout the process. Each and every creation is bespoke and personal, they really are one-of-a-kind pieces.”

Hannah prides herself on creating everything by hand herself - something I imagine is very difficult when it comes to creating items of clothing for women of all shapes and sizes.

Designed to be timeless and classic, each piece has been carefully produced to emphasise the natural beauty of the female silhouette, and getting every single piece just right is something Hannah tells me can be tricky, but is one of the most important steps.

“Once I've sampled on myself, I see how the design fits other sizes and make alterations based on where a bigger bust size may be required. Sizing is always the trickiest part as our bodies are all totally different, in so

many ways. I don't tend to keep stock as I make everything to order as I think it's a lot more sustainable and creates less waste. I also love how special the piece then becomes for the customer, made especially for them. Once the order is made I package it up and post it out myself. I don’t have anyone working for me at the moment, it’s all done by me,” she explains. Running her business in the North East and staying true to her northern roots is something Hannah is extremely passionate about, however, she is partial to jetting off to fashion capitals for inspiration and special one-off fabrics.

“I am based in Gateshead and have recently moved here after growing up in Washington. I am primarily online based and I have a studio set up at home where I make and distribute everything. I love to keep everything local where I can, from photographers and graphic designers to the fabrics used. I used to source a lot of fabrics at Dainty Supplies in Washington before it closed down a couple of years ago. 1st for Fabrics in Newcastle is another supplier I use all of the time and they're so friendly there. There are some independent online stores I love to use too when I can't get what I need locally and I like to have a

browse where I can when I go away. I've been fabric shopping in Paris, London, Morocco and so on. It's nice to get special, one-off fabrics to create limited edition pieces to add to my collection. “My favourite piece from the collection is the Ada Knit bodysuit. It's been the best-seller by far and it's made me so happy seeing how many people have ordered it, wear it and love it. It's something I made on a whim in the first lockdown and I don't think I expected it to be so popular. I will never stop getting excited over an order coming in. It's such a good feeling.”

Three years into business and with the

online orders flooding in every day, next on the agenda for Harlow Collection is featuring in more pop-up shops and events throughout 2023.

“I have some exciting ideas lined up this year and I can't wait to share more. Being primarily online, I know some customers like to see clothing in person, so I'd love to do more pop-up events throughout the course of the year and show off my collection and get to meet my lovely customers face-to-face,” Hannah says with a smile of joy, pride and excitement. Stop telling yourself the stories that keep you stuck

Limiting beliefs are stories we tell ourselves and they become part of our subconscious thoughts. These are our inner gremlin. Some of these thoughts are helpful and are there to protect us, but some are limiting as we become adults.

Acknowledging our gremlin is a very powerful tool. It brings a greater awareness to the critical or judging element within us - and that then gives us the opportunity to make changes and do things differently. One way of looking at your gremlin is to see it as a habitual way of thinking. When you were small your gremlin helped you stay out of trouble. It protected you by teaching you how to stay safe, do well and avoid displeasing those who were crucial to your survival. Your gremlin dates back to when ‘adults knew best and children were wrong’. This is how your gremlin views the world. But you are no longer a child, you have your own values, beliefs, and ways of doing things.

Accelerate real change and turn ideas into action

I invite you to draw your gremlin and give it a funny name. Embrace it and smile. It’s there to protect you, but you can choose when and how to listen to it. You have a choice.

As the new year hits and we start to settle back into some form of routinewhatever that may be - it’s important to check in with ourselves and hit the refresh button. to retreat. Think sink-in sofas, soft spa sounds and a bounty of books to get lost in. We’ve never been so happy to switch our phones off and let time stand still. Yorkshire produce is at the heart of the AA Rosette restaurant, with a focus on fresh, seasonal delights, celebrating the best of British.

Wined and watered, we kick things off with the Butternut Squash Veloute and the East Coast Mackerel starters.

The veloute is served with sage espuma, mini gruyere and pickled onion toastie, bursting with fresh flavours. The mackerel dish is served up in style with punchy gooseberry jam, horseradish, squid ink tuile and soy aioli.

The main event is a meat feast and comes in the form of a Loin of Yorkshire Beef and a Rump of Yorkshire Lamb for my dinner date. The beef is perfectly tender and served with truffle pommes dauphine, a buttered king oyster mushroom, shallots and red wine sauce. The lamb, in all its falling-offthe-fork deliciousness, is served with tomato

fondue, lamb fat potatoes, goat’s curd and charred broccoli.

The power of perfume

A Creed fragrance is one of my most treasured items. A time capsule in a bottle. So when I was invited on a brand expert fragrance journey with Eva Carlo at Fenwick Newcastle, I jumped at the opportunity, says Elysia Fryer

control our emotions from the day we are born and through the highs and lows of life.

Mr Creed and the royal team of tailors and wardrobe mistresses. We began supplying the key royal households of Europe, particularly in equestrian tailoring and uniforms.

The power of scent has always been something that has fascinated me. Above all other senses, it’s the one that can instantly take me back to a moment in time and trigger vivid memories.

It wasn’t until I removed myself from my deadline-driven desk and settled in for afternoon tea with one of Creed’s fragrance experts, that I realised how powerful perfume can be.

For me, and I’m sure for many others, the smell of fresh cut grass takes me back to my childhood - playing out without a care in the world. More memories are brought to life with notes of lavender - taking me back to my grandmother’s garden, and crisp, clean linen - taking me back to a beautiful holiday in the Caribbean.

But one of my most treasured and more recent memories triggered through the power of scent, is the unique and totally heartwarming smell of a newborn babysomething I never understood until I had one of my own.

So, as Eva and I pour our first cup of tea from the pot, I’m intrigued to delve deeper into the science of the scent and how it can

What can you tell us about House of Creed’s history and heritage?

We started in 1760 as a tailor in London, Mayfair, so we very much belong to that golden mile of tailoring history.

The journey to perfume was through scented leather gloves. They were fashionable from the 14th century and were popular amongst the wealthiest people in society. As you can imagine, life was not beautifully scented in those days, so they would wear these luxurious smelling leather gloves that would raise their spirits.

In Mayfair during that time, just before the ‘Dandy’ period, anything these people dreamed of, they could have made - and scented gloves was one of those luxuries.

Mr Creed started experimenting with these ideas and shortly after, we made a pair of scented gloves for King George III.

We relocated from London to Paris in 1854 to supply Napoleon III and his Empress Eugénie, who appointed Creed as an official supplier to the royal household. Today, we are very proud to be both French and English - we have these two cultures running through the brand, which is really enriching. Over the years, we have developed into a specialist perfume company, and what is so incredibly special about the brand is that we still have the Creed family involved in the business. They’re now in the seventh generation, which is amazing for a company of this age.

Olivier Creed, the seventh generation descendent of founding Mr Creed, is our Creative Director and Erwin, his son, is very involved in the business too. It is amazing to have this incredible heritage that has been passed on from generation to generation.

Olivier continues to celebrate the brand’s rich history, as well as diversifying the business. He decided to turn the business

into a perfume house and wind down on the tailoring. Tailoring is super technical, and because he trained as an artist, he struggled to bring his natural creativity to the brand. In perfume, you can express emotion through storytelling and memories. Creed continues to be driven by artistry and perfection - a timeless, yet modern take on history, bottled in luxurious fragrances.

Green Irish Tweed is my go-to Creed fragrance. What can you tell us about this scent and its connection with the brand’s couture heritage?

Tweed plays a prominent role in the history of Creed. It is a key fabric in equestrian tailoring. Green Irish Tweed really captures the spirit of the ‘country estate’ lifestyle. We have a long-standing connection with Linton Tweed in Carlisle, dating back to the 1920s. Olivier’s uncle, Charles Creed, spent some time there working as an apprentice. To continue the couture heritage and pay homage to Charles’s time there, we partnered with Linton Tweed on Green Irish Tweed. It’s timeless in a very modern way, and tells the story of Creed really well, representing the lush landscapes and earthy tones of country estates and the fresh air that surrounds them.

Why is fragrance so powerful in evoking memories and emotion?

Scent is so full of emotion and memories, and there’s lots of science behind why that is. Out of the five senses, the sense of smell is the most direct to the brain. We start smelling in the subconscious mind first - a good few seconds before we are aware of it, so we are reacting emotionally and physically before we even know it. Some things you can fractionalise and decide if you’re going to like it, you can’t do that with smell, it’s so primal, and that’s why it’s so powerful.

Fragrance is the best time capsule. A perfume is a diary entry. The scent of your mum when you’re born and when you’re growing up, for example, stays with you forever. It’s how you find that bond from day one.

All of our senses are about survival, so there are loads of things that are really fascinating as to how and why we react to smell.

No two people are going to have the same scent education. It’s all to do with life experience. We generally tend to be fond of vanilla because it’s one of the first molecules we learn to smell - it’s very akin to a mother’s skin, so many baby products are made with vanilla because it calms them down. But later on in life, you might have a bad experience with vanilla, and that comfort disappears. It is very personalit depends on our own unique journey. Like many things, we might be born with similar ideas and qualities, but things change as life goes on, and the same goes for scent.

Why is it that, once we are paired with the perfect perfume, we all of a sudden can’t smell it on ourselves?

When you wear a scent, your brain is very alert to begin with. It runs through the questions, ‘is this going to harm me?’, ‘is this beneficial to me?’. Once the brain understands what it is, it thinks, ‘ok, I don’t need to worry about this again, I’m safe’. Because of that, you stop smelling it because the brain knows what it is.

You want that hit because you love it and what it does for your ego. It’s a form of communication, like when you’re choosing clothing, or a car - or whatever it may be.

You are talking to the people around you. It says a lot about you as a person.

You choose your perfume because it gives you an invisible armour in a way. Be aware that, even though you can’t smell it as strongly, other people can. People in your inner circle might also stop smelling it if they’re around you a lot.

The only time you’re not going to stop smelling it is when it’s really not right for you for whatever reason. It will drive you crazy. It’s like something irritating your skin constantly. Sometimes we have scents in our bank that can trigger a bad memory and they don’t go away - that’s why sometimes certain fragrances just don’t work for us.

When you’re choosing perfume, it’s important to really take your time, try it on your skin and let it settle for a while before purchasing.

What journey does a fragrance take us on?

Perfume is a story told through evaporation.

You have to make sure you like it from the top notes, which are very fleeting and last anything from 15 minutes to half an hour, the heart notes last for a few hours, and then the base notes are what you are left with.

We are taken on a journey with fragrance, and it’s important to make sure you have a match at each stage of the process. You might love the beginning, but you might not love the end result. Is it a flirtation? Or is it a marriage? We want you to find your forever match.

What can you tell us about Creed’s key ingredients?

A Creed perfume is going to have lots of the finest ingredients available. We are a safe and responsible business. We do use synthetic ingredients, but in an incredibly sustainable way. Synthetics get such a bad reputation, but it’s really unfair, we can get so creative with them. We are developing some amazing natural ingredients in the laboratory, using funghis and sugars. We can start to replicate what mother nature is doing in the lab in a way that is sustainable so we are not over farming.

How often does Creed develop new fragrances?

We are quite slow in developing. When it is an art, and not an over-marketed product, it’s about allowing space and time for inspiration. Sometimes, like many art forms, some things make themselves. Like Aventus - Olivier said it almost made itself, whereas Aventus For Her took six years to develop.

Sometimes it is really demanding, other times it can be effortless.

Our commitment to quality means we can’t rush the development. It deserves time and space. Once the formula is created - which could take months and years - you’ve got to leave the ingredients to mature. You want a perfume to be fluid and harmonious. Something like iris, for example, takes about six years to be transformed into an oil, and you can’t speed up the process without losing quality, because it is so delicate.

It’s the most expensive laborious ingredient. We are not the only company that uses something like iris, but it is very expensive and labour intensive, which helps it stand out and stand the test of time.

There’s so much work that goes on behind the scenes when developing a fragrance. It’s a beautiful chemistry that takes you on a unique scent journey.

How do you match a customer with a Creed fragrance?

Perfumes are about emotions. The ingredients are there to transmit an emotion or a memory that the perfumer is trying to tell you. It’s like when a musician is writing new music. It’s not about just putting notes together that sounds pretty, it’s about transmitting a feeling or a story, or whatever it is that inspired them.

The notes are doing that storytelling. That’s why we use music language in fragrance, because it works in a very similar way, it’s just that we are using the sense of smell instead of the auditory. creedfragrances.co.uk

And just like that, another year is overthey really do seem to be quicker and quicker - now that's either due to me getting older or being incredibly busy, I’ll opt for the latter thank you very much.

Dare I say, the word ‘pandemic’ seems to have left our day-to-day lives (thank goodness!), so I guess 2022 was about recovery from everything we’d all endured in the past two years. Onwards and upwards with a positive attitude has definitely helped us all to get back on track and focus on the good things in life, and all we have to be thankful for.

2022 ended on a high for team H&Y with us winning British Art Team Of The Year at the British Hairdressing Awards at London's Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane. The glittering, star-studded event is like the hairdressing Oscars attended by the best of the industry - with the Art Team category being the most challenged award with the best teams in the UK fighting for the title.

To win it was such an amazing achievement for the whole team and testament to how hard we all work to give our very best in making our salons the success that they are. So you could say we are starting 2023 with a bang, ready to give our very best to all of you lovely people!

When I am called to nature or in need of some time to rest and reset, I’m drawn to either the coast or the countryside. There’s something incredibly powerful in embracing the elements in the great outdoors, come rain or shine.

One of my favourite things about Sandsend - a sweet little spot along the North Yorkshire Coast - is its ability to draw you in with its coastal, country charm. You can get lost in the endless moorland, or dip down into the fishing village to lap up the freshness of the vast North Sea. The landscapes are vast, but the village itself is quaint and tranquil.

It encompasses everything we love about what’s readily available in our beautiful region - and the best of both worlds in terms of coast and country.

A short drive or stroll along the coast road brings you to another slice of Sandsend paradise - somewhere to lay your head, indulge in seasonal dishes and unwind in the serenity of the spa.

The wooded grounds embrace us as we enter Raithwaite Sandsend, gently guiding us from the wide, open spaces of the beach, to an enchanting hideaway surrounded by towering trees, well-kept gardens and stunning, sandstone buildings.

In terms of style, Raithwaite is all about echoing the natural environment that surrounds the estate. The interiors are sleek yet subtle, with playful splashes of colour and lovely, local artworks that tell a story. There’s a warm welcome as we enter the main building with our pooch and toddler in tow, and shortly after, we are directed to our home for the weekend - a dog-friendly suite in The Hide - a beautiful bolthole just a stone’s throw from the main building. Our duplex apartment is stylish and spacious - perfect for letting little legs and sandy paws run free. The staff at Raithwaite are incredibly welcoming and encourage you to treat your abode as if it is your own.

Complete with lounge and outside terrace, a luxurious loft bedroom and a huge ensuite shower room, the space is as comfortable as it is charming.

Other ways to escape include lazy afternoons in the spa, Raithwaite beach yoga sessions, surf lessons, bike hire, paddleboarding, boat trips and hikes. The food, spa and activities are big hitters at Raithwaite - not to mention the proximity to one of the best beaches in the region - but the reason for our visit is to talk about the gorgeous gardens that surround the estate. Not only was Raithwaite named the UK’s most sustainable hotel (The Cateys 2021) for its efforts in growing on site and cutting down produce miles, the garden team have created the country’s first hotel Forest Garden with 1,000 trees planted to create a self-sustaining woodland, producing fruit, nuts, perennials and herbs. All of that, plus organic no-dig beds, a compost site, orchard and polytunnels. The hotel is a certified carbon neutral business and strives for zero waste this year.

During our visit, we chat to Head Grower, Jamie Walton, who shares his love for the gardens and this glorious place he gets to call work.

Meet Raithwaite’s Head Grower, Jamie Walton

What can you tell us about the Raithwaite gardens?

The 1/3-acre Kitchen Garden, three 50ft polytunnels, large traditional orchard and newly planted Forest Garden have been built and maintained to certified organic standards, we manage good soil health through use of no-dig principles, green manures, crop rotations and natural soil feeds.

The Kitchen Garden has been designed to be a closed loop self-sustaining system, with organic and regenerative practices and principles at its core. The design includes an extensive polytunnel water harvesting system, solar array and large composting set up, enabling complete self-sufficiency. We make woodchip pathways from coppicing our own woodland and adopting seed saving practices through the use of unhybridized and heirloom seeds.

Why are they so unique?

Our decision to opt for ‘no-dig’ when designing our gardens was a simple one as this regenerative approach offers a myriad of benefits to humans, soil organisms and the wider environment. Not only in increased production and quality, but, more importantly, by keeping the soil structure intact we ensure our precious soil organisms can thrive - maintaining and promoting the mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship with the plants. This approach eliminates the need for artificial fertilisers or pesticides and allows the plants access to all the vital nutrients they need to produce an abundant organic crop. Because our soil is undisturbed, the carbon dioxide drawn into it by the plants during photosynthesis is retained and CO2, and other gases, are not released into the atmosphere.

How do the gardens feed into the kitchen?

The ‘harvest to plate’ process is fundamental here at Raithwaite. The fresh, organic produce grown in our gardens is then supplied directly to our kitchens, bar and restaurant, including: fresh flowers, seasonal displays and nigh on every variety of fruit and vegetable one can grow here in the UK. And it all ends up being creatively

How do you make the most of Raithwaite's unique location close to the coast and countryside?

The garden’s proximity to the coast and fresh sea air only improves the flavour of the vegetables grown here, in my opinion. We are also able to work with other exciting coastal companies, such as seaweed growers, incorporating any by-products into our rich and fertile compost created on site.

What can you tell us about Raithwaite's sustainability efforts?

The Kitchen Garden and newly planted Forest Garden have been some of the major additions this year within our already award-winning, sustainable journey. There are many more areas throughout the hotel that have made huge strides forward it creating and cultivating far more resilient and sustainable process and practices with may positive cross-departmental effects.

Do you work closely with the chef and other members of the Raithwaite teams?

The gardens work closely with the kitchen, as well as other departments, to construct planting plans that align with seasonal menus and ensure a diverse and exciting range of produce for our guests to enjoy as part of the creative meals and drinks on offer.

What do you have planned in the gardens for 2023?

We aim to increase our production next year by opening up new ground on another field on the property. We also have plans to build an extensive hotbed system that utilises the heat generated by the composting process to allow for winter production and the growth of many varieties of plants outside their usual season.

Your favourite feature in the gardens?

The soil and the life within! Watching the soil regenerate through the practices we employ here is an amazing thing. Even within one growing season we have seen a dramatic increase in biodiversity with the Kitchen Garden, from soil organisms to birds and the odd mole that unfortunately don’t really seem to understand the no-dig method! However, they all play their role in a diverse and healthy ecosystem.

And finally, what do you get up to when you're not attending to the Raithwaite gardens?

I’m also a practising artist, so that is a big part of my life outside of the garden. The two interests do cross over though, and my work almost always incorporates elements or inspirations taken from the natural world.

MY WORLD >>

I had a wonderful festive season back home with my family, and pre-Christmas I spent a bit of time in Los Angeles to do some work with HexClad - it’s been fantastic working with such a wonderful brand. It was very full-on, but lots of fun.

After a week of working and enjoying the buzz of LA, I went up to the Carmel Valley, which was just beautiful. It was like going to rehab for a couple of days after a very busy week!

January, for me, is about hitting the ground running and planning for the year ahead. I’ve been lucky enough to get a bit of winter sun in Tenerife. The food over there is great - because of where it is located, you get this vibrant mix of Spanish food with African spices and flavouring. There’s a little town called Adeje and they do this thing called Adeje chicken - the easiest way to describe it is like piri-piri on steroids. You go to the restaurant, there’s no menu, you just order the spices, fried chicken, salad and Canary potatoes - these beautiful potatoes that only grow on the island - it’s their version of a Jersey Royal. Traditionally, they boil them in sea water and then let them dry in the sun, so you get a crispy, salty skin with a tender, seasoned inside. It is literally the nicest potato I’ve ever had! So simple yet so delicious.

I’m hoping to be back in America in the spring. There’s lots going on over there which I’m hoping to be involved in, and some things have materialised since my November trip, so that’s exciting moving into the new year.

I was blown away by the produce in the States. When we went to the Carmel Valley, my friend Jason had watermelons, lemons, limes, oranges, strawberries, zucchinis and chillies growing in his garden. Everything grows there. A lot of people think of America as this place where food is not so greatlots of imported stuff - but, actually, the produce in California is sensational. One thing I’d love to do next year is explore the food scene a little bit further in the US.

You all know by now, I’m a big fan of sprouts (they’re not just for Christmas!) and championing seasonal veggies, but it’s really important to highlight that, if they’re still in season, you really can do great things with them. Carrots, leeks, kale, squash, swedes, turnips - a lot of the root vegetables are still in season at this time of year.

For me, it’s still about those hearty, wholesome ingredients that act as the centrepiece of home comforts we all know and love.

You don’t need to jump on the January salad bandwagon. Lettuces and tomatoes are not at their best at this time of year, so if you’re interested in eating healthy, focus on British seasonal stuff.

Go for beetroots or sprouts and make a nice warm salad. Again, just make the most of what is in season - that’s when you’re really going to benefit from the flavours. Hearty food can also be healthy, if that’s what you want.

Shepherds Pie

Serves 6

Why not let a show-stopping winter warmer gently guide you into January? This Shepherds Pie is packed full of in-season produce and is the perfect 30-minute meal when feeding a crowd. Use a 10 inch HexClad frying pan for best results.

Ingredients

600g lamb mince

1 large onion, finely chopped

2 carrots, finely diced

1 sprig rosemary, finely chopped

1 tbsp tomato paste

1 tbsp flour

150ml red wine

400ml chicken stock

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

150g frozen peas

Method

Preheat the oven 200°C.

For the mash

1kg Maris Piper potatoes, chopped into 2cm chunks

100g salted butter

74g cheddar cheese, grated

Heat a 10 inch HexClad frying pan over a high heat and fry the lamb mince for a few minutes until golden. Season, then remove to a bowl.

Reduce the heat to medium. Add the onion, carrot and rosemary. Season with salt. Cook, while stirring, for 5-8 minutes until the veg has softened.

Return the browned mince to the pan and cook for 2 minutes.

Stir in the tomato paste, cook for 30 seconds then scatter in the flour and cook for another minute.

Add the wine, let it bubble away for a minute to reduce by half.

Add the stock and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for around 25 minutes until you have a thick, rich sauce. Add the peas for the last few minutes of simmering. Meanwhile, cook the potatoes in a large saucepan of boiling salted water for 12-15 minutes, until cooked and tender.

Drain, allowing the potatoes to steam dry for a few minutes before returning the potatoes to the pan. Add the butter and mash until smooth. Season to taste.

Spoon the mashed potato over the lamb in the skillet, spreading it evenly. Run a fork over the surface to fluff it up. Scatter over the grated cheese.

Bake in a preheated oven for around 25 minus until golden and bubbly.

Savouring the seasons

I am always looking at buildings and their beauty, and here in the North East we are blessed with fabulous architecture, ranging from Grey Street in Newcastle to the stunning viaducts and castles in the countryside, with Northumberland getting first place in England for the county with the most castles. And that’s without mentioning our own UNESCO world heritage site, Hadrian’s Wall - 2022 marking 1,900 years since the wall was built, taking over six years to build. Our Bull Pen conversion here at Linnels Farm may be following this timeline.

We didn’t name the building the Bull Pen, it came with that title and when we viewed the farm it housed a huge bull, upwards of 1,000kg with an attitude to match. It had tin sheds to two sides, but you could see the stunning Northumberland stone façade along with the three arches.

I am increasingly aware of my ignorance of history, starting an article on renovation with a reference to the Romans. The Romans left us with so many great things. If you go to Hexham Abbey, a fabulous building which adds so much to the town,

you may find some of the stones from the wall, identified by Latin inscriptions. This general reuse of the stone is in part why only 10% of the wall remains.

We have now finished the external stonework repairs. The roof is re-slated and new timbers added. We have incorporated 14 integrated solar panels and five VELUX windows on the other side. I have just fitted the windows in the existing arched openings, these were supplied by the fabulous Balmoral Joinery company in Blaydon. Measuring and templating the stone arched openings for the windows was certainly interesting, the height of two sides are quite different for each archway. The room layout is pretty much determined now, and l will soon start the studwork.

The stud walls will have insulation between, and plasterboard over, so now is the time to really define room layouts. With electrical cables hidden in the studwork, all the fixtures need to be determined: wall mounted light positions, outside lights location, sockets in the kitchen; the one I need to remember is the socket fixed to an exposed roof joist for the internet booster.

I did hear a celebrity chef curse the internet and connectivity and how he would love to

live without it - for me that feels like the historian Gibson who claims the happiest period in human history was the Roman times. I would guess he was referring to the wealthy sect, certainly if you look at Hadrian the stone mason, he lived to the ripe old age of 62, but for Mr & Mrs Average in Roman times, the life expectancy was 25 years. In the UK it is now 80 years. We have to live in the present and typing this on an iPad is good progress. The Romans tended to write on papyrus scrolls or pages made from animal skin, and with no auto spell check, the animals must have been alarmed if they grazed near a school with a low Ofsted report.

The Bull Pen will have fast internet connections and some hugely clever technology; the solar panels now installed

will not only supply the Bull Pen, but also the holiday lets. And with the magic of technology, the hot water will be heated by solar electricity, controlling the immersion heater - and if there is no available solar electricity, it will call on the boiler, not mains electricity, for hot water.

As I now return to the thoughts of the celebrity chef and our basic technology in the Bull Pen, I do wonder if just maybe he had a point - he certainly will if it goes wrong. Whilst I understand the view of the chef that we may be in a world of impatience, it is up to all of us to set our own standards on expectation, that’s exactly what I am saying to Karen about the completion date for the Bull Pen.

Now, celebrating its history and location by inviting visitors from all over the world to enjoy Bowness-on-Windermere, The Ro continues to charm both tourists and the local community with its friendly feel and refined refurbishment back in 2021.

LAY YOUR HEAD

After a hike to Orrest Head Viewpoint and a busy day on the boating lake, we are ready to rest on our cloud-like king bed in our family suite. With the pooch and little one catered for in a comfortable cot and dog bed, it’s time to kick off those walking boots and sink into a sound sleep, wrapped in clean and crisp white bedding that

work their magic as soon as the head hits the pillow.

Rooms are equipped with everything from a flat screen smart TV and WiFi connection, to Eco Boutique toiletries, minibar for treats and a stylish en-suite shower room. We are in the ground floor accommodation, but there are plenty of rooms and suites boasting balconies and far-reaching views of the Lake.

FOOD & DRINK

The Ro’s in-house restaurant is the perfect tonic when it comes to resting tired legs and indulging in proper, local comfort food following a day exploring all that Lake Windermere has to offer.

The dinner menu is available from 6pm until 9pm and serves up everything from snacks and small plates, to starters, classic mains, sides and desserts to sweeten the deal.

After a busy day with baby and pooch in tow, we’re here for the full works, kicking things off with a baked camembert for two (£14). A pot oozing with mouthwatering baked cheese, flavoured with garlic and rosemary and served with toasted sourdough for dipping. The starter goes down wonderfully with a bottle of warming house red. This is what a weekend in the Lakes is all about, right?

The main event comes in the form of the grilled seabass with braised fennel, lobster

ravioli, sauteed baby potatoes, crispy kale and shellfish sauce; and the slow cooked pork belly with creamy mash, carrots and pear, green apple and sage jam.

Both dishes are exquisitely laid out on the plate and are packed with punchy flavours that work effortlessly together. The seabass is fresh and flakey and the pork belly is perfectly tender with a crisp coating.

Dinner is rounded off in style thanks to the stand-out dish, a hearty sticky toffee pudding served with butterscotch sauce and locally sourced ice cream.

Following a comfortable overnight stay, The Ro’s bar area is the perfect, poochfriendly spot to fuel up with a hot breakfast, as well as continental classics and deliciously fresh pastries.

The Ro’s restaurant is also open for laid-back brunch, lunch, sandwiches and also packed lunch on-the-go.

New York is always a good idea. It’s a city that sparkles day and night and offers up something new and exciting every corner you turn. Elysia Fryer rediscovers the concrete jungle…

Hi Luxe readers, I’m Freddy, the 12-year-old Border Terrier. I’m a little pooch with lots of love to give, especially to humans. I’m super friendly with female doggies too, but when it comes to other male dogs, I’m often told my attitude stinks! Not too sure what that means, but I can’t help it, I like to be the coolest hound on the block.

DOGGY DOWNTIME

Any section of the house bathed in sun is where you’ll find me. No matter how big or small the patch of sun peaking through the window may be, I love to soak it up. When the sun goes down, you’ll find me snuggling up on the sofa and I often navigate my way upstairs to find a nice warm spot under the duvet.

It may not be the most glamorous part of owning a pet, but understanding parasites is really important for the health of both your pet and family. With such a wide range of products available it can quickly become very confusing. The level of risk your pet faces depends on their lifestyle – a young, inquisitive dog who scavenges will be a higher risk than an elderly, indoor cat. For those with significant risk, prevention is better than cure. Parasites include fleas, ticks, roundworm, tapeworm and lungworm.

There is a wide range of products available, from ‘over the counter’ to ‘prescription-only’ products that are only available from a vet. Vet-prescribed products usually use newer drugs or combinations of drugs, which allow them to cover a wider range of parasites than older, over the counter products. Many will provide treatment/prevention against fleas, ticks and worms in one go.

There’s a huge variation in how effective parasite products are. For a flea product to be effective, it has to both kill fleas quickly and continue to work until the next dose is due. Some over the counter products fail on one or both counts, leaving animals exposed to reinfection and frustration for owners.

Lungworm is a parasite which affects dogs and can be fatal. It is usually picked up by licking or eating slugs and snails. Some prescription-only products will prevent lungworm and protect your pet - over the counter products will not.

Roundworm can affect both dogs and cats and can be a health hazard to humans, especially young children who may be exposed to faeces through play. Regular treatment for roundworm is an important part of responsible pet ownership, especially if you have children at home.

It’s a twin thing

If you can share a womb and navigate through some of life’s biggest challenges together, you can certainly share a business - is the ethos Stella and Jodi (34) are carrying into their exciting new venture.

Blackton Grange is a beautiful place to stay and celebrate, in a spectacularly rural area in the heart of the North Pennines between Middleton-in-Teesdale and Barnard Castle.

Born from a passion of property, interiors and finding the perfect place to entertain and celebrate with loved ones, the twins made their forever-dream a reality by putting their heads together and creating an incredibly special place to share with the world. And much like their sisterly bond, this property was a match made in heaven. Meeting with Stella and Jodi is like catching up with old friends. We’ve been chatting over email for some time now, keeping up to date with developments at Blackton Grange, but as we meet for coffee at Eggleston Hall, it feels like I’ve known them forever.

Before we get into the details of Blackton Grange and what makes it so special, we go back to the very beginning. These girls have been together for the duration, after all. “So, we’ve known each other forever,” Stella jokes.

“We are, of course, very close and do a lot together. But after school, we went on to do totally different things. Jodi was into sports and exercise, whereas I was more into art and design.

“I ended up working in HR for some corporate companies and Jodi trained to be a teacher, but we knew we always wanted

to do something together. It sounds so cheesy but we used to watch Property Ladder with Sarah Beeny back in the day and we decided we wanted to be property developers.

“One birthday, I bought Jodi a pink toolbox and told her it was the start of our venture,” she laughs.

They didn’t know it yet, but that was the start of the Blackton Grange journey.

“Lots happened between then and now,” adds Jodi.

“We always knew we wanted to do something together, but we went on to have our own little journeys first, which

I think was really important.”

Stella and Jodi’s first venture came as two twenty-somethings looking for a gap in the tea market.

“It all started because I really love hot chocolate but couldn’t find a healthy alternative,” Jodi starts.

“Fast forward a few months, we developed a product called Chocolate Tea - it was basically loose leaf tea, blended with cacao and chocolate nibs.

“I was driving to work one day and there was this advert on the radio inviting applicants to be on a TV show with their business ideas.”

“Next thing you know,” Stella jumps in.

“We’ve applied and Jodi tells me we’re off to London in two weeks!”

“So off we went on the Megabus down to London,” Jodi says, laughing.

“We pitched this business idea and actually got quite far. They didn’t invest because we didn’t actually have a product at that stage, but it was a catalyst for the start of something new for us. We developed the

product, got a bit of investment and before we knew it our products were in Fenwick and Hotel Indigo.”

The twins had checked off their first successful business venture.

“We had proven to ourselves that we could work together and make a success

of it,” says Jodi.

“But we had to make a decision, and decided we couldn’t afford to put our all into it at that stage.”

Time went on, they both met their love matches, got married and ‘lived happily ever after’...

If only life was that simple.

Their late 20s brought the biggest challenge to date. A health scare that really helped put things into perspective for the pair.

“We’ve both always been fit and healthy, so when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was a massive shock,” Stella starts.

“I knew I had a lump, but just shrugged it off as something hormonal - I thought I was too young for it to be a problem. But it continued to bother me so I went to the doctors and was referred to the breast clinic.

I remember it so well - it was the day before Christmas Eve and I was there for about six hours. That Christmas, I spent a lot of time worrying about the results, then I got a phone call in January to say everything was fine and no surgery was needed. A month or so later, I was getting quite uncomfortable, so I booked in for a private operation to get the lump removed. When I went back to get my stitches checked, they told me it was cancerous. I was booked in for a mastectomy straight away. After six months of chemo, I got the all-clear two days before our 30th birthday.”

“When Stella was diagnosed, we both got tested for a gene that means it can run in the family,” Jodi says.

“But we didn’t have it, so that was a relief. I got regular check-ups, but everything seemed to be fine. One morning, I woke up and found a lump that I’d never noticed before. I didn’t tell Stella because she was three weeks away from giving birth, so I didn’t want to worry her. I went to the doctors, which was difficult because it was during the lockdown, but they were great and eventually I got to see the consultant that Stella had.

“Within a week I was diagnosed.”

“It changed everything and really put things into perspective for us,” Stella adds.

Twins quite literally go through everything together, and after going through something so upsetting and traumatic, it made sense to take the plunge and make their dreams a reality - together!

“When Jodi was going through treatment we started looking at properties,” says Stella. “I’m a big believer in the notion that everything happens for a reason, and it really gave us the push to go out and do something that we were really passionate about.

“I found it really difficult going back to work after treatment and my pregnancy,” says Stella.

“I was the same,” Jodi adds.

“I was off for nearly a year and when I went back, I just realised it wasn’t for me. Life is far too short to do something that doesn’t make you tick.”

The cogs started turning for the twins during the planning of Jodi’s hen party, searching for the ultimate party house to enjoy with loved ones.

“It was really hard to find something that ticked all the boxes,” says Stella.

“And we certainly couldn’t find anything similar in the North East, so we saw a gap in the market and the rest is history.”

Since then, with the help and support of their husbands, Mark and Andrew, the girls were on the hunt for the perfect property to transform into a luxury escape.

“Andrew came across Blackton Grange. I didn’t really know that area existed to be honest, but we went to have a look,” says Stella.

“I wanted to put an offer in straight away, but Jodi didn’t like it at all - it had previously been a youth hostel and it was quite difficult to see past it.

“Because it was listed as a commercial property, there were a lot of hoops to jump through. We were lucky because we didn’t need planning permission to change it back to a residential building.

“After convincing Jodi, we put the offer in and it was accepted within a couple of days!”

The initial idea was to transform the property into a ‘wow’ celebration house where people could gather with loved ones and enjoy quality time together, but the girls very quickly started to see lots of potential.

“The property has a barn to the side of it, which we realised would be perfect to host weddings,” says Jodi.

“That will be part of our second phase of development, but we’ve already got the ball rolling with it and it’s incredibly exciting.

“People will be able to dry hire the barn, bringing in whatever suppliers they want in terms of food, drink and entertainment.

They’ll hire the whole estate - so they’ll get the barn and the house for the weekend.

“It’s a blank canvas for people who want to be a bit creative with their wedding.”

“We’ve got some ‘wow’ rooms to show a bit of personality, for example the cinema room, games room and the bridal suite, but then some of it is just really stylish and homely,” says Jodi.

“We don’t want people to feel intimidated. In the living room, for example, we’ve got a really good balance of comfort, but also the luxuries you’re looking for when you’re away - like a big open fire and gorgeous soft furnishings.”

“One of the biggest problems I’ve faced when looking for houses for a large group is there never seems to be space for everyone to sit around a table and eat together,” says Stella.

The kitchen is the heart of the home and perfect for entertaining, complete with all the mod-cons you need for a comfortable stay including a coffee station, wine fridge and instant hot water tap.

What’s more? You can while away the hours in the totally indulgent cinema room, fitted out with surround sound, comfortable armchairs and access to all the best streaming services, meaning cinema night is covered during a stay at Blackton.

The girls are now taking bookings for 2023 and beyond, with barn renovations set to start shortly, launching Blackton Grange weddings in 2024.

Now for the fun bit. The planning, preparation and transformation.

“It’s just been about creating a luxurious space where families and friends can come and spend time together - in a really nice environment, without breaking the bank,” says Stella.

“When I go somewhere I want it to be nicer than home, so luxury was always top of the priority list.

“It’s easy enough to find high-end places to stay on a smaller scale, but when you’re looking for somewhere for a big group, it gets difficult to find somewhere that has both the space and the style.”

“We’ve tried to design the place in line with the surroundings, because they are so stunning,” says Stella.

“It’s a traditional stone farmhouse, so we’ve had to completely gut it and bring it back to life. We’ve stripped it back and used some of the amazing features that were already there, but were just hidden when it was running as a youth hostel

“So in the kitchen we’ve got a huge dining table with enough chairs to seat everyone (up to 20). There’s more than enough space for a full house of guests - lots of comfortable seating and enough bathrooms. “Our aim was to create something to the standard of a really nice hotel, but with the convenience and added luxuries of a self-catered cottage.”

Blackton Grange comfortably sleeps 17 people with five en-suite bathrooms and two additional showers and WCs on the bedroom level. The house boasts plenty of entertaining space downstairs including a large living area with sink-in sofas and a huge fireplace, games room featuring a full-size pool table with a double-sided

Stella and Jodi’s main aim is to ensure everyone who walks through the doors loves the space just as much as they do. It’s the rural escape you are guaranteed to fall in love with.

And with plans for wellness retreats, stargazing events, glamping pods and extra accommodation for weddings in the not-too-distant future, it’s safe to say that there’s lots in the pipeline for the lovely pair.

Alice Hall, the inspiring entrepreneur who turned a living room business into a fashion empire, is now taking the interior world by storm as Creative Director at Rowen Homes, the business she heads up with her husband Andrew. She talks us through her business plans and how they have made their house the ultimate ‘glam’ home

Alice Hall’s journey is an inspiring one to say the least - one that has taken her from selling dresses on eBay, to growing £25m turnover fashion firm Pink Boutique, and now seeing huge success with her luxury interiors business.

She lives in Darras Hall with her husband Andrew, daughter and pooch, and has set up Rowen Homes HQ down the road in an impressive 30,000 sq ft warehouse in Blaydon.

Alice, who was recognised on the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2017, certainly knows a thing or two about running a successful business and tells us that she will always be proud to call the North East home for both work and family life.

“We are really proud to be based here in the North East,” she says.

“It has been such a big part of our journey, and we’re delighted to continue growing our business here.

“We currently have 35 people working for us in Blaydon, which is great. We are growing constantly and just like to make sure we’re having a nice time with it all.”

Alice studied journalism at university and moved into education as a teaching assistant.

“I was really struggling to pay the bills,” she starts.

“So I started selling dresses on eBay.

Before I knew it, I was launching my own website and grew that business to 70 people and a turnover of £25m.

“My mum bought me out of the business at the start of the pandemic and that’s when we moved into homeware, setting up Rowen Homes.

“We started out as an interior design firm, but since then, we have gone full circle back into e-commerce, which is where it all started with Pink Boutique. We realised that we were working on these amazing designs for people and unfortunately sometimes we’d hand them over and then never hear from them again.

“During the early days we were getting a lot of traction on our socials with people asking where they can shop our look, so we thought if we bought the stock people could buy into the look as much or as little as they’d like.

“We do personal shopping as well, which is our hint towards interior design, but really we are focusing on retail and it’s been a huge success so far.”

Not only is Alice incredibly talented in her creative direction and running of the business, she is skilled in creating viral

content, finding gaps in the world of interiors and having an appreciation for the finer things in life.

“I love being in beautiful places and experiencing gorgeous things,” Alice says with a smile.

“It’s amazing how nice you can make your own space feel, and what impact that can have on you. It’s so important to be able to enjoy and feel proud of your home, and it’s our mission to share that with people.

“The interior design side of things was born out of an idea I had to start a home Instagram account when I was working on our own house. People loved it and I started getting loads of design requests.”

From a paint range and bespoke wallpaper, to accessories, custom headboards, sofas and rugs, Rowen Homes covers pretty much everything when it comes to ‘glam’ interior design.

“The only thing we don’t do is flooring. Pretty much everything else can be bought or made-to-order on our website.

“We also have a personal shopping service where we can either recommend small details to bring a space to life, or

really transform a room, pulling together a theme from scratch.

“We have been working with celebrity clients on some personal shopping projects and we’ve got four exciting collaborations lined up for this year, which we can’t wait to be involved in.”

We are thrilled to hear that the Rowen Homes interior empire is growing across the North East, with confirmed plans to open the first flagship store in the Metrocentre this year.

“It has always been a dream of ours to have our own store,” Alice starts.

“It gives clients the opportunity to really see the scale and quality of the products. “We’ve done really well online, but we know that, when it comes to sofas and furniture, people want to see and touch before they buy.”

As well as the stunning new retail space, the store will open up opportunities for customers to come in and learn from

Alice and her team.

“At the back of the store we’re going to be launching an ‘experience space’ where clients can work on designs with our personal shoppers.

“We’re also going to be hosting workshops and masterclasses - everything from ‘how to make a moodboard’ and ‘interior design principles’, to seasonal stuff like wreath workshops at Christmas.

“It’s a great opportunity to educate our customers on subjects that really inspire them. A lot of people want to learn the skills to be able to do things themselves in their own homes. We’re here to help them do that.”

Alice and Andrew’s stylish home in Darras Hall was built by an ex-Newcastle United footballer and they instantly fell in love with the design, layout and location.

“When we went to see it, we loved the way it was proportioned. There’s a really nice hallway with a big staircase in the middle. Upstairs, it has a really substantial landing - and, for me, that was the ‘wow’ piece when I walked in.

“I loved the symmetry of the house - it has the same number and size rooms at either side of the staircase, so it flows beautifully. It had been designed really well - pretty much all of the bedrooms had en-suite bathrooms and walk-in dressing rooms. The structure of the house was perfect, plus it had a private driveway and a lovely garden, so it was a real box-ticker and there wasn’t a huge amount of structural work to be done - but, of course, we wanted to put our own stamp on it.

THE TRANSFORMATION >>

“When we moved in there was a lot of pine woodwork, which we painted in a more neutral tone. This gave us a bit of a blank canvas with a classic feel, so we could start adding our own features in terms of furniture and decor.

“We replaced all of the flooring and carpets, and we refitted some of the bathrooms. One of the biggest projects was in our master bedroom. We knocked the dressing room and en-suite through to make a bigger en-suite bathroom. In there we have a double-size bath, a walk-behind shower and a fire in the wall between the bathroom and the master suite. We wanted to do something ‘wow’ and I think we achieved that.

“In terms of the overall transformation, we just put our own ‘glam’ stamp on it really, with a few stand-out features.

“We re-designed the back of the house as part of a lockdown project, which really opened things up and brought the outside in. The idea was to replicate three of the rooms outside, so we have an outdoor kitchen with a fitted barbecue, an outside dining area, and an area beyond the playroom, extending into the garden.

“Andrew was a joiner way back when, so he built the pergola, and we are really pleased with the results.”

“Because we work in homeware, I always have the urge to change things, but we’ve tried to keep it quite classic. I’m really mindful of ensuring the design and interiors can stand the test of time - using materials like linens and ash wood. You don’t need to fully reinvest on a regular basis - maybe just throw a new rug down or change up the cushions.”

“The fireplace between the en-suite and master bedroom is a definite stand-out feature. We’ve also got a huge island in the kitchen, perfect for entertaining. It’s great for big buffets and dinner parties. The third thing is our ‘dog wash’ area. When we bought the house there was a utility room upstairs, which is genius because you don’t have to constantly take your washing downstairs. There was another utility space downstairs, which we didn’t need, so we changed it to a dedicated room with dog wallpaper and a washing area with a showerhead. It’s so handy.

Little moments

Hands up who likes to start the new year in an organised and more focused way? Me too. We have the best intentions of eating well, exercising more, getting a handle on our finances, staying hydrated etc., but then life gets in the way. We’re so busy that sometimes we overcomplicate our goals, only to never reach them. When it comes to parenting, one of my mantras is ‘the simpler the better’ and so I thought I would make this easy for you and give you a few of my top tips to strengthen your parenting in 2023.

See life through the eyes of your child Often, we have an agenda when we are with our children. The agenda could be to get everyone out of the house on time without screaming like a banshee. Easier than it sounds, isn’t it? But our children could have a different agenda. At 8am, they may want to finish watching a TV programme or re-order their teddy collection or put the final touches to their hair. We often ignore or dismiss their agenda as we believe that our wants trump their wants. In this example, it is imperative that everyone gets out of the house on time but nobody likes to be rushed or put under pressure. If we can see life through our child’s eyes, it opens up the window of compassion. You could tell them how much you would love to spend an extra 10 minutes enjoying a cup of tea but you have to get to work on time. You can empathise with them but also explain the importance of punctuality and ask for their suggestions about how you can work as a team to make your mornings run smoothly.

Have realistic expectations

Very few people know exactly what their children are capable of when it comes to cognitive, emotional and physical

development. Often our expectations are too high or too low. Asking a child of 3 to sit still in a restaurant for an hour is unrealistic. Young children are built to move, explore and to be curious. Equally, low expectations don’t foster a sense of independence and mastery in our children either. If you are preparing your 13 year old’s breakfast and getting their uniform out each morning then you’re doing them a disservice. They are more than capable of doing that for themselves. We must remember that expectations can create significant stress when they don’t match up to reality. When our expectations are age-related and realistic, then our children can flourish and we are less frazzled.

Be mindful with your language

I love this quote from Peggy O’Mara: “The way we talk to our child becomes their inner voice.” Words have immense power and children remember the specific vocabulary we use with reference to them. If you tell your child that they are a nuisance, messy, an idiot or naughty, then they will believe you. Conversely, if you tell them that they are brave, kind, capable and thoughtful, they will believe you too. Sometimes we need to take a step back and reframe. How would we feel if someone said we were ‘such a mess’ or ‘a liar’? Would we want to cooperate with them or would we lash out or break down? If we want our children to use kind words, then we need to model kindness.

Pause and breathe

When I talk about ‘tranquil parenting’, people think I mean that we have to be zen all of the time. This is a big misunderstanding. Having a tranquil family does not mean that there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means that in the midst of all of that chaos, we can still find calm. As a tranquil parent, we still feel

stressed, angry and despondent, but we have tools to regain our composure and feel balanced again. One of the best ways to do this is to pause and breathe. When things get too much, just stop, close your eyes and focus on your breath. Science tells us that this helps regulate our nervous system and brings the executive-functioning part of our brain back in control. To help everyone in your home find balance, carve out time just to be. When we give ourselves time and we connect with nature, our stress hormones reduce and the positive brain chemicals (such as oxytocin and serotonin) increase.

Discipline, don’t punish

The word discipline comes from the Latin word meaning ‘to teach.’ Often people use the word ‘discipline’ when really what they are doing is ‘punishing.’ Usually punishment focuses on making a child suffer, either by withdrawing something (eg. the iPad, dessert or our love) or making them do something (eg. writing lines at school). Punishment focuses on the behaviour and usually there is no connection between the outcome (eg. being sent to their room) and the event (eg. fighting with their brother). When we discipline a child, we try to teach them how to make a better choice next time. We focus on what lies beneath the behaviour and we support our child in working out what went wrong and how we can solve the problem together. In ‘tranquil parenting’, we allow all emotions but we set clear limits and boundaries on behaviour. We see ourselves as an authoritative coach rather than a demanding master. If you prioritise your relationship with your child, over being right, then your connection will strengthen.

Repair your ruptures

Most parents I work with feel tremendous guilt when they have lost their temper with their child or punished them on a whim.

We’re human, it’s going to happen, but the important thing to remember is that when we mess up, we should always apologise. We’re keen to encourage our children to do this but we don’t always hold ourselves to the same high standards. Bonding with your children on a daily basis is paramount for a healthy relationship, but never more so than after an argument or disagreement.

So there you have it; my top tips to strengthen your parenting for the next 12 months. If you want an even more concise version, remember that your children are innately good. If you keep that close to your heart, then it will guide your actions and decisions to a more loving and connected relationship.

Dr Cannon is being recognised for her significant contribution to public health, including her advocacy work during the pandemic - a collaboration with the Cabinet Office, Department of Health and NHS England.

Trio awarded prestigious honours

Staff members at one of the north’s leading Combined Cadet Forces (CCF) are celebrating a series of significant promotions made by the Ministry of Defence.

Caroline Connor, Luke Monument and Henry Fairwood have each been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, Major and Captain, respectively, at Barnard Castle School’s CCF.

The trio possess 48 years’ collective service to the CCF as adult volunteers alongside their duties as teaching staff and Housemasters at the school. Barnard Castle School’s CCF has in excess of 200 cadets across its Army and Royal Air Force sections, many of whom pursue military careers after they have finished School.

Banana puffs

Naturally sweet banana discs wrapped in a vanilla and cinnamon flaky pastry swirl, these sweet little mouthfuls are super easy to make with minimal ingredients.

MAKES 12-14 PUFFS

with no gaps between the bananas if possible.

If your bananas are a little bendy, tear them in half to straighten the sausage shape out. Gather the pastry edge closest to you and roll the pastry up and around the bananas.

Keep rolling up until all the pastry is wrapped around the fruit.

3 large ripe bananas, peeled

1 tbsp vanilla extract

1 tbsp maple syrup

1 medium egg, beaten

2 tsp ground cinnamon, plus a little extra for sprinkling

2 tsp demerara sugar

Method

Preheat the oven to 200°C fan and line a large baking sheet with non-stick baking paper.

Unroll the pastry and lay it out horizontally in front of you on a flat, clean work surface.

Work quickly here as the pastry will become sticky and difficult to work with if sat out for too long. Mash half of one of the bananas with a fork in a small bowl. Add the vanilla extract, maple syrup, if using, and 2 tablespoons of the beaten egg. Mix very well, then scrape every last bit onto the pastry. Use the back of a spoon or a pastry brush to spread the mixture evenly across, reaching right to the edges of the pastry. Use your fingertips to sprinkle the cinnamon over from a height so there is an even coating.

Place the remaining 21/2 bananas in a line across the length of the pastry sheet, positioned approx 7.5cm away from the edge closest to you. You essentially want a long sausage shape,

Trim the ends of the pastry if there’s no banana inside, then cut into 2cm discs using a sharp knife. Lay the discs on the lined baking sheet, cut banana-side up. If any banana pieces fall out, just push them back into the centre of the pastry.

The pastries may look a little messy right now, but don’t worry as they’ll puff up and even out as they bake.

Brush the remaining beaten egg over the sides and top of each banana puff.

Sprinkle a tiny amount of extra cinnamon on each banana piece. If you like, add a tiny sprinkling of demerara sugar to each one too, this will caramelise in the oven to give a delicious taste and texture. Bake in the preheated oven for 15–20 minutes until the pastry has puffed up and turned golden on top. Allow to cool on the tray for 10 minutes before serving warm, or let cool completely and store to enjoy cold later on.

Changing waves

I’ve spoken to Sally twice in the last week and both times she’s been waiting by the waves, ready to surf. She quite literally lives and breathes it. I can hear the breeze from the beach whirling around as we chat on the phone.

Sally, an East Coast surfer and Finisterre Ambassador, launched Yonder back in 2018. In her past life she studied politics and worked for the British Red Cross, but surfing has always been in the background and was always going to shape how she lived. It started as a release from the day jobsomething to help her switch off and come back to nature - but when she and her partner Tom Bing (a professional photographer) were looking for their next move, they quite literally followed their hearts, setting up home in Tynemouth, simply for the surf.

Fast forward a few years, they’re living in a surfer’s paradise with their little boy Billy, and have since set up Yonder - a community of budding female surfers supported and coached by Sally.

Offering an alternative and supportive pathway for women to get into surfing, this is a dream-come-true passion project for Sally and we’re delighted to share her story…

Why did you decide to set up Yonder? Yonder was born from three things, the first being my love of surfing - it is at the heart of everything I do. Right now, as we speak, we’re on our way to surf. It has been such a huge part of life for myself and Tom for such a long time. Now, we bring our little boy along with us as well, which is really special. Secondly, when we set up five years ago, I couldn’t see any other viable route into surfing for women. There are lots of surf schools that offer lessons and encourage women to come along and give it a go, but I really wanted to see progression and build a community of female surfers. There’s so much more to the industry than just the physicality of surfing - it’s a lifestyle, and there’s a lot of stuff that comes with that. And finally, I guess the business stemmed from the fact that after having my son, I had a sudden realisation that I couldn’t really justify going back to my previous job because it didn’t seem worth it with childcare costs. Yonder was always ticking away behind the scenes, and I just decided that it was time to take the plunge.

Fundamentally, I am a surfer and I just want to share my passion with other women in the best way I can, and Yonder is my platform to do that here in the North East.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your route to Yonder?

I studied International Development and Politics at university and I always

wanted to work with the refugee community. I did that for quite a long time, running destitution projects throughout Yorkshire and Humber. I found it amazing and totally inspiring, but I was definitely burning out from it and I found that surfing really helped as a release - I was surfing a lot in Scarborough at the time. Being in the sea is really great for mental health. It was the thing that really kept me going. Following that, I started working as a

as a surf instructor in the summer. I worked for some great surf schools, but with my holistic background - looking at all elements of what’s going on with somebody - I wanted to dive deeper into the whole experience and be part of the journey, rather than just teaching a lesson and then moving on and sometimes never seeing the client again. It’s all about progression and support, and that’s why creating a community was so important to me.

How have you used your previous experience in the set up of this business? I’ve done a lot of charity work over the years. I worked for the British Red Cross and the Refugee Council, so with that background, I wanted to ensure that Yonder was accessible. I didn’t want to set up a

surf school that people would always have to find the funds for - because I understand it can be quite expensive - so we set up the Yonder Surf Academy CIC.

The Academy has been created to build confidence, self-esteem and positive mental health for marginalised women. We put on free projects and courses and have worked with the LGBTQ+ community and the Angelou Centre in Newcastle - offering a range of holistic services for BME women across the region. We cover everything from the lessons to the travel, and they absolutely love it. We get funding every year for that, and absolutely love giving back to the community.

Why is it your mission to create a community of female surfers?

I’ve wanted to create a pathway for women into surfing for a long time. I remember, after having my little boy, standing on the beach with him in a baby carrier and thinking to myself ‘I wish I could go in and enjoy that surf’, but I was on maternity leave and it just wasn’t possible.

It dawned on me that I didn’t know of any other women that I could look to in the same situation - women who are so hooked on surfing. I desperately wanted to get

back in and would’ve loved to have support from other like-minded women. Having since set up Yonder, I am now aware that these women are out there, we just didn’t have the community to bring them together.

I did a bit of research and came across some female surf communities around the world, but we didn’t have anything like that here in the North East, or even in the UK, so I made it my mission to make it happen, and here we are.

Do you think surfing is a male-dominated lifestyle - and how do you think this is changing?

It is definitely a male-dominated activity, especially in the North East. I spend most of my time surfing with men - and it’s great - but we recognised something that was missing and I was determined to encourage more women into the sport. What we wanted to do was go against stereotypes and misconceptions and empower women within a safe community so they can get a well-rounded experience of the surf lifestyle. We give advice on boards, wetsuits, how to check conditions - everything to help create a bit of a pathway and ensure people aren’t intimidated.

The industry is still very male dominated,

but it is definitely growing for women. It will take time, but we are certainly moving in the right direction.

How do you go about growing and nurturing that community?

It’s all very organic - we’ve moved things really slowly, starting with one-off lessons and then building up to courses. We can also help people find their first surfboard and connect them with other women so they have friends to surf with. We also run events such as film nights and exhibitions to get the community together, as well as an online store where people can find everything they need to further enhance their experience. There’s a whole load of stuff that comes with surfing. It’s as much about understanding the equipment and

environment around you as it is about the actual surf. There’s lots to learn and the community is at the heart of it all.

Why was it so important for you to set up in the North East?

We live in Tynemouth, so it’s home for us now and our favourite place to surf. I’m from Yorkshire originally, we literally moved here for the surf. It is how we have built our lives.

What do you do when you’re not surfing? We travel a lot in our campervan, showing our son as much of the world as we can. Closer to home, we drink coffee, eat pizza and spend lots of time outdoors.

A GT for all seasons

Since leaving Jaguar just over three years ago, some thought renowned designer Ian Callum might be looking to slow down, but nothing could be further from the truth. After setting up CALLUM, a design and engineering business, he and his growing team have been prolific; creating and collaborating to reveal a stream of elegant and timeless designs.

In the past 12 months alone, that includes a limited-edition whisky, a lounge chair and a home racing simulator for motorsport firm Prodrive. Alongside all these successful projects, the Aston Martin CALLUM Vanquish 25 has arguably attracted the most attention.

This CALLUM creation features over 350 engineering, material and design changes that transform the much-loved car, originally designed by Ian, into a more practical and relevant GT for today.

The chance to pore over the Vanquish confirms that the changes are more than skin deep. Hunkered down, the revised bodywork sits 10mm lower on wider Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. Bilstein dampers with stiffer roll bars are tuned to deliver

more composure and agility. Placing equal emphasis on extracting more performance from the glorious 5.9 litre V12, it now delivers an extra 60bhp over the original thanks to new carbon fibre induction and free flow exhaust. Slide inside and the lower seating position is cosseting for every journey. A revised, slender steering wheel, coupled with significant setup changes are designed to reward the enthusiast driver.

The overall result is a more versatile GT, eminently suitable for everyday use.

What do you do for a living?

I run multiple businesses, however I spend the majority of my time running my strategy consulting business, helping small business owners around the world to sustainably grow their revenue and team. I also deliver keynote speeches and advise CEOs on their next successful business move.

A day in the life of you?

I am lucky enough to work from home most of the time, in my office (May James HQ). Smart on top, pjs on the bottom is the way forward! At 10am I check in with my virtual freelance team and respond to any client queries that have landed overnight (we work across multiple time zones).

I don’t take any calls before 11am to allow myself to have a relaxed or productive morning, depending on how my day is looking. The rest of my day is packed with calls, voice notes and writing growth strategy. I advise leaders across industries on any business problems that arise during the day and then I finish work around 7.30pm to make dinner. Every day is different, so it’s always fun. One day I’m in London consulting in

person, and the next I’m recording a podcast or creating a robust pricing strategy for a business in the US.

Any upcoming or ongoing projects we should know about?

From a business perspective, we are working internally on launching a new diagnostic tool for small and medium sized businesses to identify gaps in their scaling efforts.

My podcast ‘Honest Business’ launched six months ago and has built a loyal weekly listenership in over 14 countries, which is a fantastic free resource for business leaders.

There’s lots of exciting events in the diary looking into 2023 - from speaking engagements to client strategy days. It’s full steam ahead, just as I like it.

What does downtime mean to you?

Sleep, rest, champagne. I suffer from chronic illness which affects me on a daily basis, so rest is a non-negotiable in my routine.

But if I can squeeze in a boozy lunch and shopping with my partner, I’m happy.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

A doctor - I desperately wanted to help people.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

You are way stronger than you think you are and when you think you’ve got nothing more to give, you have to just

keep going and put one foot in front of the other. My mum suddenly died last year unexpectedly and I’ve had to put that lesson into practice more than I’d like.

What is your greatest fear? Being trapped in a room with spiders and snakes.

Which living person do you admire most and why?

How on earth do you pick one? All of the women that are making a difference around the world, staying true to themselves, acting with integrity and creating opportunities for other women to thrive.

What is top of your bucket list? A beautiful small wedding and a honeymoon to the Maldives.

What is your most treasured possession? My family - they mean everything to me.

What does the weekend mean to you? Not an awful lot. My partner and I don’t live by the conventional Monday to Friday schedule. I try to make every day count, especially a Sunday evening. I always open a bottle of champagne and celebrate all of the incredible things that are going to happen in the coming week. It’s a reminder to never take things for granted and not to keep things ‘for best’. Today and every day is special.

A memorable holiday?

A spontaneous trip to New York in 2019, just before the pandemic struck. I booked it as a surprise for my partner on 22

December after a really busy year.

Best dress?

A killer pair of red heels paired with a CHANEL red lip makes me feel fabulous.

Who would be your top three dinner guests?

My brother and sister plus our beautiful, funny mother - so that we could tell her everything we didn’t get to say before she suddenly died and update her on everything we’ve achieved over the past year. It would be so joyful - a room filled with love.

The last place you ate?

Finbarr’s in Durham - so good!

The last book you read?

The Recovery Letters by James Withey and Olivia Sagan. It might seem like a strange choice, but it’s a powerful read for anyone who is struggling with their mental health.

The last thing you listened to?

My podcast, ‘Honest Business’ - approving next week’s episode. Music wide, I’m stuck in the 70s listening to AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and Bruce Springsteen.

The last thing you watched?

I don’t watch much TV day to day, however, as the winter draws in, I love watching old episodes of Vera. There’s something comforting about watching it and picking out all the sights of the North East that you recognise.

Three luxe things in life?

Champagne, beautiful long hotel stays and bougie candles.
