Welcome We can’t quite believe we’re onto our 3rd edition of Escape. It’s been such a pleasure putting together the content for this magazine, as it gives us an excuse to write about something we all love – Northumberland!

Berwickupon-Tweed

Whether you’ve visited our magical county 100 times or never set foot ‘this far north’, we hope to inspire you to make the journey to our hidden kingdom. This edition has been inspired by the power of recommendation and the simplicity of the great outdoors. As the last remaining independent agency in Northumberland (and aren’t we proud of it!) we recognise what gives us our edge, and it’s our genuine love and passion for the place we call ‘home’. We’re asked daily for our personal recommendations whilst on holiday, so we thought, why not publish these to share with everyone?

We’re lucky to see so many of our new customers holiday with us based on a recommendation, and we don’t take for granted how powerful a personal endorsement is. After all, recommendations can’t be bought, only earned. This appreciation has inspired a theme across this magazine, which is to give to you all our favourite places, walks, pubs, cafes, attractions, and more that we love to enjoy. Hopefully, you’ll feel our passion for our beautiful area, and add some of these places to your holiday bucket lists. We also wanted to highlight the divine simplicity of exploring the great outdoors. Northumberland is fortunate to play host to some fantastic attractions, but we believe our county is best discovered in its raw form, where nature can do the real talking. Whether it’s a walk, a cycle, a swim, or a climb, the beauty of Northumberland is not to be underestimated and can be discovered in so many ways. Best of all… it’s free! Filling your lungs with the freshest coast or countryside air doesn’t cost a bean – although we would recommend investing in some good walking boots and a reliable waterproof. You’ll thank us for that. So, grab your pen and paper (or the notes app on your phone, for those ‘on the go’) and start creating your Northumberland bucket list. You’ll never regret trying something different or discovering something new. Whether you want to be adventurous or you simply seek an afternoon of self-care, you are guaranteed to make some happy memories here in Northumberland. Welcome to the county of escapism. We hope to see you soon, where you can escape the ordinary with us.

NORTHERN NARRATIVES

Bringing it home

Eileen Ferguson is the co-founder of the brand new Ad Gefrin Anglo-Saxon Museum and Distillery, in Northumberland. We find out how the family business went from a kitchen table vision to Wooler’s biggest visitor attraction… For Eileen Ferguson, home is very much rooted in Northumberland. It’s part of her DNA. A place that has shaped her life and allowed her family to grow and flourish. It’s a place she feels incredibly passionate about, so when the opportunity came to give something back to the community that raised her, she jumped at the chance - and the rest is history! “Ad Gefrin is my baby,” she starts, with a smile. “It’s the baby that I had when my last child flew the nest. “I was always involved in the family business, but I really wanted to work

10 COQUETCOTTAGES.CO.UK

full-time again. I needed to combat the empty nest syndrome. “At the same time we had this disused haulage yard in Wooler, which had been in my family for almost 100 years - operating as Redpath Bros Haulage from the 1920s until 1998. We really needed to redevelop it because it was in decline. The location of it is fantastic it’s like a gateway property to Wooler. “I remember Wooler being a thriving high street - there was a real buzz about the place. I wanted to do something that would help to regenerate the area. ‘How could we do that?’ I asked myself over and over.”

Eileen’s role as a mother was top of her priority list, but her brain was always ticking away in the background as she pondered a big project - a big move for the family, and for the local and wider community. “We used to take the children to the south of France most summers and on the journey back, we used to stop off and visit vineyards. Every time we did it, I would say to my husband, ‘I wish we could grow grapes in Northumberland because it would be brilliant to have something like this in Wooler’. Alan would laugh and say, ‘I don’t think the climate is quite right back home!’.

NORTHERN NARRATIVES

The seed was planted, but it was business as usual for the family managing a busy home life as well as a successful transport firm. A few years passed before Eileen turned her thoughts to whisky... “I’d always thought that whisky was very Scottish, but it wasn’t until The Lakes Distillery opened and we went over and experienced it, we thought... well actually, what does Northumberland do well? It grows barley - and a lot of the barley that grows on the banks of the Tweed gets made into malting barley and gets taken to Simpsons Malt in Berwick before being transported to Scotland. Half of the banks of the Tweed are on the Northumbrian side - in England - so why can’t we make use of the biggest maltster in England? “So, suddenly this grain of an idea emerged and we thought, ‘maybe we could!’. We talked to some people and got a bit of interest and encouragement. In April 2018, our children came for Easter lunch and we explained what we were going to do. We told them that we were going to have to spend their inheritance to get this off the ground, because it was a massive risk. They all said, ‘yes go ahead, do it!’. “Then I said to them, ‘would any of you like to work with me, because this

involve and evolve the local community, the Fergusons came up with the idea of broadening the experience with a museum, which, in turn, would not only celebrate Northumbrian heritage, but also serve the town with employment opportunities. “We decided that if we were doing it, we would use the history from our region. Ad Gefrin means ‘by the hill of goats’ and comes from the location of the 7th century Anglo-Saxon royal palace at Yeavering four miles away that inspired us from the very beginning. You can still see black and white feral goats on the slopes and valleys of the Cheviot Hills as they have grazed for centuries. Yeavering was discovered through aerial photography in 1949, but excavated between 1953 and 1962 by Brian Hope-Taylor. When they were excavating, they found a lot of Anglo Saxon artefacts there. It turns out north Northumberland actually has quite a lot of history sitting

underneath it - really rich history that hasn’t been told. “Chris knew every bit of history because when he was doing his PhD he studied Anglo Saxon Northumbria. That’s when we came up with the name Ad Gefrin, after calling it ‘The D Project’ for a little while,” she explains. Celebrating the best of Northumberland is at the very heart of Ad Gefrin, and whether visitors are whisky-lovers or history-buffs, the whole experience has been created to be inclusive for all - inviting us on an intimate journey into the time and place that inspired the project. The team welcomes visitors with that same spirit and hospitality - through the art of exhibitions, events, distillery tours and tastings, the bistro, bar and retail offering. “The museum and distillery are quite symbiotic really,” says Eileen. “Whisky, of course, takes a long time to produce, so we wanted to create

is big?’. To my utter amazement, my stepson Chris said yes,” explains Eileen. Following that conversation, the wheels were in motion and it was time to start putting plans into action. The kitchen table morphed into the first boardroom - a place where all great ideas are born. “We literally started from the bottom we had to get an architect, we had to find out about whisky, we had to do everything,” says Eileen. “We had spent quite a bit of time at whisky distilleries doing tastings in the years running up to it. It was kind of a learning exercise for us.” During the planning process, when looking at ways in which they could

COQUETCOTTAGES.CO.UK 11

NORTHERN NARRATIVES

something to encourage different markets, using our rich history to do that. Another thing that we are really good at in the North East is hospitality, so we wanted to incorporate that into the experience too. And, in fact, the two go hand in hand,” she adds. “In the museum you’ll find artefacts and stories that bring the history to life. In partnership with The British Museum and other major lenders, we have artefacts that have never been seen before, all relevant to Anglo Saxon times. “For people who then go on to the whisky distillery, they’ll have a tour. From the milling to the mashing and then the distilling, you’ll get a chance to see the casks maturing and when you finish all of that, the whisky tour ends in style in the Tasting Room.” What has been so lovely about the birth of Ad Gefrin, the development process and now the execution, is the involvement of the local community. It’s not just a family affair in the sense that it is the brainchild of the Fergusons, there’s a real family feel to the place from the team bringing the vision to life, to the supporting local businesses, suppliers, stockists, tradespeople and more. We had the pleasure of heading along to try it for ourselves and the tasting experience at the distillery was truly multisensory, encompassing rich

us, they’re quite proud of it, because it has all been done to the highest level. There’s nothing like it in the area.” For Eileen, Alan and the rest of the family, this very special venture is all about giving something back to the place where they started. The place where they started their family, where their families started their businesses, and the place that continues to feel like home. The family are not only building a booming business, they’re building a legacy - a legacy they hope will span their lifetime, their children’s lifetime, and their grandchildren’s lifetime. “I hope that it is still standing in 50 years’ time,” she says. “I hope that my grandchildren will be involved. We will make no money out of it because we’ve spent a lot putting it together, but we’re hoping to run it as a business and pass it on to future generations - leaving a legacy, not only for us, but for the whole town. “Hopefully the distillery will create new opportunities for people up here - things we haven’t had at our fingertips before. We might have kids from Wooler who want to be a distiller when they grow up. How cool is that? That’s an option now - and it’s incredibly exciting.” There have been many milestone moments for Eileen and the family

arrived in style, knowing that my father was towards the end of his life. One of the proudest moments was when I saw the trucks driving along Wooler high street and Jake, who had worked for my father for 50 years, was driving the first lorry. I told him he wasn’t allowed to retire until the stills arrived. “The second truck was being driven by my daughter who, in lockdown, had trained as a truck driver. I couldn’t stop the tears when I saw her. I was so proud. “It was all a bit of a blur. Afterwards, I went back to see my Dad and told him all about it and he had tears running down his face. He gripped my hand, gripped Alan’s hand and it was as if to say ‘ok, you’ve done me proud - you can have my site’. “It’s a very emotional story, but it was so special.” Ad Gefrin officially started distilling whisky at the end of 2022, with the site opening its doors to the public on Saturday 25 March 2023. Eileen, the Ferguson family, the Ad Gefrin team and the wider Wooler community are delighted to share this incredibly unique project with the world. The newest addition? The introduction of their Thirlings Dry Gin, a classic spirit crafted and bottled in the heart of Northumberland. From the evocative Cheviot Hills to the

scents, divine tastes, and awe-inspiring visuals. We were not only captivated by the exquisite flavours but also by the fascinating stories and history behind the creation of these fine spirits. “We’ve been thrilled with the support from the local community,” says Eileen. “Which was incredibly important to me, because that is what this is all about. When you know you’re going to do something like this, it’s quite hard to put your head above the parapet because you’re thinking, ‘what if they don’t like it?’. “The community calls it ‘our distillery’ which is really lovely. They talk about it as if it’s been there forever. I think, like

during the development process at Ad Gefrin - from lightbulb moments during vineyard tours in France, to kitchen table business plans and more recently, the arrival of the stills. “When the stills came, that was one of the most emotional days of my life,” Eileen starts. “I’d been to see my father who was in a care home at the time - he was 96. I realised that he was very poorly and that he didn’t have much longer with us. I said to him, ‘look, Dad, whatever you do - don’t die tomorrow morning’. “So I spent that day with the whole community, watching as the stills

sweeping coastline, each sip captures the essence of Ad Gefrin’s natural surroundings: heather and pine from the hills, elderberry and dill from the hedgerow, and Irish moss and sea buckthorn from the coast. A business born around a kitchen table. The ingredients? A whole load of whisky tastings and a genuine love for the Northumberland town that Eileen still calls home. Ad Gefrin is a national landmark, a Northumberland gem, and a family business built for the community - putting Wooler on the map for years to come.

OWNER PROFILE

Owner profile: Nigel Hunt Nigel Hunt fell in love with Northumberland from the moment he first came to the area for a holiday. Now he owns his very own cottage, Farne View near Bamburgh, that is part of the Coquet family What made you fall in love with Farne View? We’d booked a holiday through Coquet Cottages to come up to Northumberland and loved it so much we thought we’d like to have a retirement property there. The idea was that ourselves and our families could come and stay at the cottage when we wanted, but it could also be available for others too. Julie, the owner of Coquet Cottages was very helpful in guiding us about buying a property and we decided to let through Coquet Cottages. We visited a small development in Glororum, just outside Bamburgh and saw some nice properties, but not quite what we wanted. As we got into the car to leave, we remembered they were going to build four more. We got out of the car by a mound of earth and Tom (the developer) brought out plans of what the properties were going to look like. We could see that the end of the property would have excellent views of Bamburgh Castle, the Farne Islands and the Cheviots and we bought it there and then, without the foundations even being dug. We’ve never regretted it and have had many happy times there, as have the numerous guests and their dogs over the years, judging by the positive comments we receive. Best feature of the property? The best feature is that it's an ‘upside down’ property, with the bedrooms on the ground floor, which means the top floor boasts exceptional views of Bamburgh Castle and the Farne

20 COQUETCOTTAGES.CO.UK

Islands. In the evening guests can sip wine on the veranda, hopefully in the sun, looking across the fields with the Cheviots in the distance. Almost all of our guests bring dogs and I’m sure the dogs would say the best feature is the large, secure, grassed garden, which gives them great freedom to roam around and explore. What do you love about the area? The sea! The Northumbrian coast is special. It has wonderful beaches, lovely dunes and wild seas. Although it can get busy in summer, there’s always space. Autumn and winter are also wonderful months to visit when the wind blows and the sea is full of white crested waves. We’re lucky that both our dogs have loved the sea and a walk on Bamburgh beach was our late dog, Holly’s, favourite place. She was always in her absolute element with a visit to Bamburgh beach and we have wonderful memories of her every time we walk along the gorgeous coastline.

Favourite things to do nearby? We’re very much into the coastal area, the castles and beaches, but not too far away you’ve got the wonderful Cragside National Trust property with its gardens and lovely Alnwick Gardens. The Ship Inn at Low Newton and the walk to Dunstanburgh Castle is a must, as is the coastal walk from Seahouses to Beadnell and onto Low Newton. What do you want guests to get out of staying at your cottage? We want them to have a relaxing stay, enjoy the views and go home recharged after a week in wonderful Northumberland. We get all too few visitors from the South of England and we’d like those that do come this far North to go back home and tell their friends and family just how wonderful this area of England is, how special it is, how well worth the travel is, and unlike Cornwall there are no traffic jams and it's not overcrowded!

INTO THE PAST

Historic faces Northumberland is not only rich in its woodlands and picturesque landscapes, but also in its history of great innovators, heroes, and talents. We’re sharing some of our favourites and where you can learn more about them… life in the Victorian era, Grace’s upbringing and life in the lighthouse. Here you can see her remaining personal belongings, letters, portraits and, of course, the famous coble that she used in the rescue. rnli.org Capability Brown Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, born in Kirkharle, Northumberland, was possibly the most famous landscape designer of the 18th century. The origins of his nickname ‘Capability’ came from his frequent usage of the word when referring to the potential improvement of country estates. What made him so brilliant was his vision and style when it came to developing natural-looking English landscapes. He relied heavily on three concepts: comfort, economy and elegance and these are the ideas he used to persuade rich and famous aristocrats to invest endless amounts of money into creating beautiful landscapes, Grace Darling

Grace Darling Grace Darling was an important figure from 1838. In the face of catastrophe, she proved to be a woman of bravery and courage, as she risked her life saving survivors of the wrecked ship, Forfarshire. Grace came from a rather humble background. Born in Northumberland on 24 November, 1815, she spent most of her days helping her father with lighthouse keeping duties, studying and looking after the house. On

7 September, 1838 Grace spotted a sinking ship from her bedroom window. Without any hesitation, Grace and her father rowed a boat during crashing waves and heavy winds to save nine people who faced a life threatening situation. Charles Grey, born in 1764 in Falloden, Northumberland, oversaw four years of political reform surrounding the electoral system and abolished slavery throughout the British Empire. His Reform Act of 1832 built the groundwork for the electoral modern system we recognise today, and his abolition of the slavery act were noble reforms that made Charles a very wellknown figure in British history. Charles married Mary Elizabeth Ponsonby in 1794, who was a huge fan of what we now recognise as Earl Grey tea and she used it while entertaining guests as a political hostess. It proved to be so

Born in 1810, Lord Armstrong is known for his development of the hydraulic system that allowed the Swing Bridge in Newcastle Upon Tyne to open. In addition to that, he created Cragside in Northumberland, the first house in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity. Lord Armstrong is also said to have been an early environmentalist, he was an advocate for moving away from fossil fuels and switching to water and solar power. His engineer mindset really showed when he read about the difficulties The British Army experienced while handling heavy field guns. Consequently, he designed a more mobile field gun, which was later successful in trials and declared superior to all its rivals. Lord Armstrong later gave the patent to the gun to the British government. Lord Armstrong played a significant role in the development of Bamburgh Castle. Originally a coal miner from Ashington, Jackie was a true sensation with a record of 200 goals scored throughout his career as a football player. One of the top moments of Jackie’s career was in 1951, when he scored two goals as Newcastle beat Blackpool, earning the FA Cup Final trophy. Jackie was an outstanding centreforward and a true asset to the team, known for his speed, ferocious strike and power. Not only a great footballer but also a man of humbleness and kindness - a true local hero. OWNER PROFILE

Jennifer Campbell Northumberland has always been a special place to Jennifer Campbell and her family, and now with a property of her own in Alnmouth, she hopes she can make it just as special for others too… to Newcastle or Edinburgh from Alnmouth for a day trip to get some time in the city too. Favourite things to do nearby? The coastal path from Alnmouth to Craster is a fantastic walk, with The Jolly Fisherman to reward your efforts at the end or, on less strenuous days, we do a short circuit to Foxton with a stop off at Scott’s Deli in the village for takeaway brunch to enjoy along the way. We never miss a chance to visit Howick Hall, the ancestral home of Earl Grey, which has something beautiful to offer all seasons but especially in spring, with the snowdrops followed by drifts of daffodils and tulips, and of course a visit to the tearoom is obligatory. Our two boys would also strongly advocate fitting in a surf lesson with John at Tell us a little bit about The Alnmouth Penthouse journey… Northumberland has always been a special place for us and after countless family holidays exploring the region, we decided to buy a place of our own. Alnmouth was our ideal location and we knew it was very popular so when we found The Penthouse, we didn’t hesitate. We were due to complete at the end of March 2020, but of course the world changed overnight and things didn’t go quite to plan. After numerous delays, lockdowns and restrictions, we were so pleased when we eventually welcomed our first guests in May 2021.

Best feature of the property? The balcony for relaxing with a glass of wine on a summer evening, or in the colder seasons, we love curling up in the seating area in the main bedroom and watching the boats in the ever-changing estuary view. What do you love about the area? It has something for everyone and every season. Northumberland is well known for its stunning coastline and castles, but it also has beautiful countryside in the Northumberland National Park and grand country houses like Cragside nearby. We love that you can easily take the train

Northside Surf. What do you want guests to get out of staying at your cottage? We know holidays are so precious so we really hope that our guests leave having had a genuinely special time in Alnmouth, enjoying some of the great places to eat and drink in the village and hopefully having found the apartment a relaxing and comfortable place to stay. We’d always hope that the cottage will enhance a great holiday for our guests so there’s nothing nicer and more rewarding than when a guest chooses to come back and stay again.

Name Claire Eason Job title Sand Art Practitioner Business Soul2Sand Our business in three words Bespoke sand designs The day job brings... The day job allows me to meet people from all walks of life, each one with fascinating personal stories. The range of projects continues to amaze me; some are lighthearted family celebrations, others more serious, like very sensitive memorials or promoting an important issue. Then there are local festivals, charity events and even historic occasions like the Coronation that have used sand art. Finding out what is important to that person or organisation is my aim. We talk about how they would like the image to feel and then gradually, the ideas are distilled into a design. The result should tell a coherent story and if intended to be a group event, it needs to have contribution opportunities for all. So this means designing with particular ages and numbers in mind is important. There’s quite a lot of pencil sketching and laptop work initially. The agreed design has a grid placed over it. Then that grid is scaled up to around

there’s the photo and video processing, which does take some time. It’s exciting to see the design from above which is very different from ground level viewing. The hidden technical side of the job includes keeping up to date with drone legislation, equipment, website, insurance and looking for new ways to share the experience is important too. I love the variety of my work and the uniqueness of each project. It’s a joy to see a paper plan come to life on the beach! Any exciting projects in the pipeline? I feel very fortunate to be working on lots of meaningful projects at the moment, it’s hard to single out just one. It’s been great working on projects with young people and local communities and it’s wonderful to see how beach art resonates with so many different people. I’ve been working on a new type of aerial photography to showcase my work using an additional drone plus some new camera techniques too. Lots of practice is needed before the unveiling! Somewhere special... So many places are enchanting in Northumberland but Routin Linn waterfall, not far from the village of Ford, with its Neolithic cup and ring rock art is very special. My parents took us there as children and its otherworldly, timeless feel is as strong today as I recall from childhood. What does Northumberland mean to you? Northumberland means a deep connection with my family and a sense of continuity with ancient cultures. It’s an unspoilt, untamed landscape with layers of history yet is adapting to the future. I especially love the way Northumberland embraces its natural assets and more people are enjoying sustainable activities in the county. soul2sand.co.uk

The day job brings… Almost anything - a lot of time is spent outside, whether that’s collecting botanicals for the distillery or managing our free-moving cows and ponies. We have a Wilding programme at Hepple which is something that takes up a lot of our time. We are really passionate about the interaction of this with the Spirits Company as it provides a commercial outcome that works with rather than against the natural world. Working alongside nature means you have to be ready for anything and having to work with people, our customers, our regulators and our occasional visitors means you have to be ready - for anything! Any exciting projects in the pipeline? With our neighbours we are working on a huge project called ‘Landscape

Recovery’ which will try to build a really long term plan for ecological health on a vast scale over the Simonside Hills. Ecological systems need space, and time to rebuild back to their fullest potential. Whether or not this plan comes off in its current form, talking about such a positive programme with our neighbours has been a hugely rewarding experience. Somewhere special... At Hepple, obviously. I have secret places here I won’t tell you about. I love the College Valley as well, the Hazel woodland at one end is extraordinary, and the top of the Cheviot, via the Hen Hole provides the most epic walk in Northumberland. What does Northumberland mean to you? Northumberland is England’s Bhutan. It is where the natural and the human worlds are still strong, and still connected.
