oday’s business landscape is littered with billion-dollar companies that have fallen short and clearly missed the mark in terms of meeting the expectations of consumers, shareholders and the public. According to a recent 60 Minutes broadcast, Facebook has experienced “a cascade of disturbing revelations” that include allowing an outside company “to surreptitiously gain access to personal data mined from as many as 87 million Facebook users.” Wells Fargo, the United States’ fourth largest bank with nearly $2 trillion in assets, became the target of a Senate investigation and paid a $185 million fine after illegally creating millions of savings and checking accounts on behalf of clients without their consent. And Volkswagen Group, ranked #16 on Forbes’ list of the world’s largest public companies, was caught falsifying emissions data on 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide from 2009 to 2015. The scandal included the arrest of the CEO of Audi, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, in June of this year.

points to a lack of strong, moral and ethical leadership as a reason behind these and other recent corporate failings. “Look at what’s happening in the business community alone,” he says. “People on Wall Street are going to jail for cheating and breaking the rules. We teach ethics at Regent. Ethics are part of the Christian ethos. So our students learn ethical standards from the Ten Commandments, the Sermon on the Mount, the Biblical Mandate … I believe Regent can be a light that leads people forward.” Regent University's School of Business & Leadership (SBL) serves as a beacon of strong biblical leadership, training men

and women for fulfilling careers and lifechanging impact. Established in 1982, four years after the university’s founding, SBL understands that today’s professionals need entrepreneurial vision and agility to steer businesses and organizations with confidence, innovation and expertise. As students earn their leadership or business degree, they learn time-tested theories and strategies, while gaining practical, immediately applicable workplace skills — all from a biblical and global perspective. According to U.S. News & World Report’s 2018 rankings, SBL offers students the third-best online business program in Virginia and the fourth-ranked online MBA program in the state. SBL’s M.A. and MBA programs offer a convenient eight-week format with up to eight start dates per year. The Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership and Doctor of Strategic Leadership programs are designed to provide effective solutions for today’s complex organizational and leadership challenges. SBL’s doctoral programs are rooted in Christian ethics and

a biblical worldview, and offered in a flexible online format with three required on-campus residencies that last four days each. Recently, SBL also earned Coastal Virginia Magazine’s Best Higher Education: Gold Award in its Best of Business awards in the areas of Best Business School and Best MBA program. "It is a tremendous honor to be recognized in our own community that we love and appreciate so very much," says SBL Dean, Dr. Doris Gomez. "Coastal Virginia is an amazing region, and … it is truly a great honor to be able to show our community what a jewel we have in Regent’s SBL and the MBA program in particular." Gomez credits "God’s glory" and the school’s faculty, staff, students and alumni for the regional magazine’s award: "It’s an amazing seal of approval for the quality we are striving for, the curriculum, our caliber of students and alumni, as well as the mentorship, coaching and care they receive from our faculty — it’s bar none! This is something we’re incredibly grateful for and we’re very proud of." SBL’s more than 3,000 alumni currently work in 49 states and 49 nations. One of the school’s most accomplished recent graduates is Cindy Arocho '12. A financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual, she earned an M.A. in Organization Leadership (as well as an M.A. in Divinity) at Regent. Arocho considers herself a "generational change agent," who loves her current role and "has found a convergence of all things she is great at." She has traveled to more than 25 countries to serve orphans, widows, local organizations and schools.

Born in Puerto Rico and raised mostly in New Jersey, she earned her bachelor’s degree at Princeton University and worked for three years at Goldman Sachs & Co., one of the top investment banking firms in the world. Following her heart, she left Wall Street and spent three months sitting in the dirt with the street children of Mozambique, Africa.

REGENT UNIVERSITY

"You can’t come out of this program without becoming a better leader. It proves itself of worth and value time and again.” CINDY AROCHO '12

Those children taught her Portuguese and, more importantly, "to see the world through new lenses." Arocho arrived at Regent University in 2008 to become equipped as a Christian leader. "Regent provided a very hands-on experience that I could implement in my life right away,” she said. "You can’t come out of this program without becoming a better leader. It proves itself of worth and value time and again." Another notable SBL graduate is Dr. Jason Carthen '09, who was named the school’s 2018 Alumnus of the Year for his contributions to entrepreneurship and business. "The Leadership Linebacker" is a former professional football player with the world champion New England Patriots, a best-selling author, international speaker, avid blogger, media personality and philanthropist, who earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership at Regent. Carthen insists that we are living in "very uneasy times" due to the current examples of leadership on both a domestic and foreign level: "Regent University holds the pivotal and unique opportunity to shape the leadership narrative for many generations to come, as it equips current and future leaders who serve at the highest levels of corporate, nonprofit or government office." He continues, "Personally, Regent’s SBL program offered one of the greatest experiences of my life as it stretched and shaped my thinking during the doctoral transformation. This transformation informs

my worldview, attitudes, intentions and behavior as I seek to model, encourage and demonstrate Christian leadership to change the world — one relationship at a time.” SBL believes in a multidisciplinary and entrepreneurial approach that encourages servant leadership and social responsibility. Equipped to inspire and influence, graduates like Arocho and Carthen are blazing trails in industries, nonprofit organizations, universities, colleges and churches worldwide. As a top military-friendly university, SBL is helping active-duty military, veterans and their families retool for promising second careers. Distinguished scholars, who are devoted followers of Christ, serve as student mentors, providing a global perspective on business and leadership, as they teach SBL’s regionally and nationally accredited programs. Perhaps the school’s website best describes the selfless, servant leadership taught and learned at Regent University: "Through biblical integration and our caring faculty, we equip students to strive toward inspired influence in business and leadership as they discover the destiny God has created for them and the impact they will make on the world in His name." Some Amazing Feet

Meet the Regent alum whose heart for ministry and head for business solved an ancient problem

A

self-professed "long-haired pastor from Idaho," Regent's School of Business & Leadership (SBL) alumnus Kenton Lee '10 has made an impact from the pulpit to the mission field to the board room. Recently, Lee and his colleagues successfully launched a groundbreaking, for-profit company to support their life-changing, nonprofit ministry. "Ten years ago, while living at an orphanage in Kenya," he explains, "I had this idea for an adjustable shoe, after seeing kids that were outgrowing shoes and had no access for more." While walking to church, Kenton noticed that the little girl walking beside him was wearing a very shoddy pair of sneakers. "Her shoes didn't fit at all," he remembers. "She actually had to cut open the front of her shoes to let her toes stick out." Lee’s heart broke when he saw so many orphans struggling to cram their feet into shoes that didn’t fit. So, after returning home to the U.S., he enlisted the help of a lifelong friend. The two men got to work, and after six long and persistent years, they eventually created The Shoe That Grows. These special sandals grow three sizes and can be worn for years. The two friends soon started a nonprofit, Because International, to distribute this revolutionary footwear to needy children around the world. Then, through the grace of God, The Shoe That Grows went viral in 2015. After several high-profile national interviews that Lee gave were widely circulated on the internet, thousands of people began donating to Because International. To date, 175,000 pairs

of The Shoe That Grows have been distributed to children in more than 100 countries. Then, the "next big thing" happened. People who supported Lee’s ministry began asking if they could buy The Shoe That Grows for their children. "This was never really our intention," Lee explains. "We are focused on our mission first. But we started to see the value of our shoes for every family and how a commercial version could actually help us achieve our mission even more." This past summer Lee and his partners launched GroFive, a for-profit business to finance their ongoing ministry efforts. The company has gotten off to an amazing start with the help of a highly successful Kickstarter campaign for their Expandals project, the commercial version of The Shoe That Grows. His growing shoe for growing feet solves a problem that has been around for as long as people have been wearing them. "Shoes that can grow and last are better for families," Lee insists. "A design that does more with less and lasts longer is better for our planet. Each purchase of Expandals helps us get more pairs of The Shoe That Grows to kids in poverty around the world." Lee says he pursued his master's degree in organizational leadership at Regent to build on and improve his leadership skills. He adds that the university also gave him the courage to pursue and achieve big goals: "Regent not only provided me with an excellent education and tons of wonderful information about being a leader, but it really gave me the confidence to be a leader."

TREASURED SUPPORT GENEROUS, LONGTIME REGENT DONORS SHARE WHY THEY SUPPORT THE UNIVERSITY AND ITS MISSION

In two books of the Gospels we find Jesus telling his disciples, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matt. 6:21, Luke 12:34). Believers are called to give and to invest in heavenly “treasure” that will not fail, cannot be stolen and won’t be destroyed. Regent is grateful for the many friends who bless the university with their resources.

Sadly, Jerry Boarman passed away in 2004, after he and Sue were married for 44 years, but she still sponsors three different scholarships. Between 2010-13, Sue gave a significant amount to the Regent University Chapel: “I felt very, very blessed and happy that they were going to build the chapel finally,” she explains. “I just wanted to be involved in it. I think it’s the most inspiring thing that I really felt a part of. You could actually tangibly see it, when you were giving to the chapel.”

As a former member of President’s Council of Advisors, Sue Sainsbury and her late husband Sue says her second husband, John Sainsbury, Jerry Boarman “treasured” the school for is also happy to be involved with Regent decades. “We've known from the beginning through her ongoing efforts. But she insists that we belonged at Regent University,” that it’s not the size of the gift that counts; Sainsbury says. “As we attended the semibecause even small amounts can help students annual meetings and got to know President answer the Lord’s call to pursue an education Bob Schlosser, Chancellor “Pat” Robertson, at Regent. the students, alumni and others at the “We created an endowment, which was university, Jerry and I began to catch the our small beginning,” she explains. “The vision. REGENT UNIVERSITY

Walt and Carol Pilcher also were members of the President’s Council of Advisors. Carol is an artist, known for her beautiful paintings. Walt was a trustee at Regent for many years and even served on the School of Business Committee. He’s also a former CEO of Legg’s Bali and the author of The Five-Fold Effects of Leadership, which was featured on The 700 Club. “We felt the Holy Spirit’s presence immediately upon setting foot on campus,” Walt recalls. “As a Christian and a businessman, I was deeply impacted by the novel idea of offering an MBA or Ph.D. with a biblical worldview. I had no idea that was possible, but we saw it in action as we visited the classes and talked with some of the professors. We fell in love with Regent at that point, and our commitment to support its important work has never left.” Walt and Carol say they’re “thrilled and gratified” to see how much Regent has grown over the many years they’ve been associated with the university. They specifically point to the increased number of both graduate and undergraduate schools and the expansion of online programs. The Pilchers have witnessed the construction of The Founders Inn, the Student Center and Regent Chapel; attended Clash of the Titans debates and other events with “world-class speakers,” and celebrated the university’s many regional and national awards and rankings. They also are grateful to see Regent graduates make an impact on our culture, fulfilling the vision and mission of the university. “Over the years it has been a joy to talk with students and see their zeal for the Lord,” Walt says. “By supporting Regent, we contribute to establishing and maintaining godly culture in all areas of life and society by preparing students for leadership roles in the disciplines Regent focuses on. … Former Regent University President Bob Slosser put it best when he used to say, ‘May all who come behind us find us faithful!’”

Bill and Deborah Quinn have been faithful givers to Regent University for many years. Bill, a former vice president at Johnson & Johnson, is also a U.S. Army veteran. Having received his MBA from Harvard, he understands the value and importance of a good education. “It’s really simple for us,” Bill insists. “We support Regent University because we believe our God supports Regent and has called us to do likewise.” Early in their married life, the Quinns say they watched The 700 Club “to learn about Jesus and strengthen our walk with Him.” But through those broadcasts, the couple also learned about Regent University. Bill explains, “We saw the importance of bringing Jesus into university-level academics to equip students with the power of God as they go into the world. Regent prepares graduates for the spiritual battles as well as the common earthly challenges they will face.” There’s no denying that Bill and Deborah’s obedience to God and their trust in Him have significantly blessed Regent, as well as its students, alumni, faculty and staff. “We serve the King of kings and Lord of lords,” Deborah says. “Still today, we hear His voice. No other name but the name of Jesus can ever satisfy.” Both she and Bill believe that others, as God leads them, also should consider supporting Regent. “We believe Regent University is good ground for sowing into the Kingdom of God,” Bill states. “Good leaders make it easier to spread the Word of God throughout the earth. And by His grace and with the power of God, Regent University is equipping Christian leaders to advance God’s purposes in every aspect of life. That’s why we support Regent.” To learn how you can support Regent University with your donation of cash, securities, annuities, trusts, bequests, and other gifts of equity or property, please visit regent.edu/give or call 800.335.4409.

MOVING TOWARD SUCCESS

AT REGENT, INTERCOLLEGIATE SPORTS ARE ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN JUST PLAYING GAMES he Regent Royals are entering their second full season of competition this fall. The university is once again offering student-athletes the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate sports, while also giving them a venue to glorify God. Due to the success the program has enjoyed since its inception, Dr. Joseph Umidi, Regent’s executive vice president for Student Life, expects the 2018-19 academic year to be a competitive one.

T

“Foundations for a Christ-centered, character-based and winning attitude have been made in our Regent Royals athletic program,” he says. “This is our year to build a reputation on and off campus of focused athletes who will stand out amongst their peers with excellence — spiritually, physically and emotionally.” The university launched the fall sports season with the second annual Regent Royals Pep Rally on Friday, September 7. The kick-off event took place on Robertson Field, where athletes and coaches for the fall teams were introduced to the student body. The festivities also included family-friendly sports clinics, food trucks, giveaways and a spirit contest, which awarded prizes to those displaying the most school spirit. Intercollegiate athletic teams that will take the field for the university during the 2018-19 academic year include: men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s track and field, women’s volleyball and cheerleading. To support and grow its sports program, Regent is in the early development stage of building a stateof-the-art, 40-acre athletic complex with NCAA-certified courts and modern facilities. The complex will serve as a hub for students to exercise and compete, and a gateway to the local community and beyond through tournaments and athletic events. Outdoor facilities are expected to include a track, baseball, football, lacrosse, soccer and softball fields, as well as basketball, tennis and volleyball courts. Planned indoor facilities also include a track, basketball and volleyball courts, along with a wrestling gym, boxing ring, rock climbing wall, fitness and weight training equipment, and a student café. At Regent, intercollegiate sports are about much more than just playing games. The university’s website says Royals athletes “are powerful without aggression. They are bold protectors and high achievers. They are humble warriors and passionate encouragers. In all things, Regent athletes seek to represent a God who grants them strength to endure through every challenge and obstacle. On the field and off. Win or lose.” Umidi has high hopes for Regent University’s sports teams in the academic year ahead: “We expect our Royals to compete at a surprising level that will gain a reputation of respect in our conference. When we win, it will be a team effort. We look forward to our students, staff and alumni celebrating their Royals and cheering us to new levels of achievement.”

If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation to the university’s intercollegiate sports program, visit regent.edu/supportathletics or call 800.335.4409.

REGENT UNIVERSITY

A Message From the Chancellor Dear Friend, This adventure in Christian higher education began in 1978 after God told me, “Build a school for My glory.” For 40 years, Regent University has been true to our mission of equipping Christian leaders to change the world. Our key distinctive is the integration of faith and learning, as we seek to remain a leading center of Christian thought and action by providing excellent education through a biblical perspective and global context. Regent has a high calling. We tell our students, “This is a cause. This is a calling. You are training yourself to be a leader. You’re not here to drink and party. You’re here to become a Christian leader to change the world.” This university is training students to believe in God and to put their hope and faith in Him. Our faculty and staff know they have a responsibility to keep these men and women grounded in the Word. When our students do that, even though there’s going to be some bumps in the road, they can be a source of leadership for the future. Regent is equipping business leaders, entrepreneurs, communicators, educators, ministers, lawyers, psychologists and more to be the next generation of Christian leaders. As you saw in these pages, our alumni are doing amazing things in service to the Lord and their fellow man. Your faithful prayers and generous financial gifts help ensure that Regent remains one of the most influential and transformational Christian universities in the world, providing an outstanding, biblically grounded education that’s second to none. Donors, alumni and friends, like you, make it possible for future Christian leaders to pursue lives of service, purpose and significance. Thank you for your friendship and support. Sincerely,

Dr. M.G. “Pat” Robertson Founder, Chancellor & CEO Regent University

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. ROMANS 12:2, ESV
