Established in 1970, the Zoo Animal Technology Program at Santa Fe College is the premier wild animal technology program in the United States. To facilitate the training of animal professionals, SF College has its own zoo located on the college’s Northwest Campus, the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo, which is the only zoo on a college campus accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Supervised by the professional staff of the SF Teaching Zoo, the students gain hands-on experience in every aspect of wild animal care, from daily care to habitat construction and maintenance, to working with the public.
Set in a naturally wooded environment, the 10-acre facility is a functioning zoo that welcomes around 50,000 guests through its gates annually and reaches an additional 20,000 through educational programs and outreach. The zoo’s animal residents encompass a diverse collection of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates, representing over 70 different native to critically endangered species. The SF Teaching Zoo is a bastion for spreading educational conservation messages through signage, exhibits, educational programs, keeper talks, animal encounters, and community events
The SF Teaching Zoo strives to uphold our mission of improving the future for wildlife, both locally and internationally, by continuing to build partnerships within our community and abroad and develop strategies for supporting wildlife and wild places. Since 2010, the SF Teaching Zoo has donated almost $110,000 to organizations working on the front lines to conserve wild animals and wild places. The Zoo is home to a growing family of Matschie’s tree kangaroos, an endangered species native to Papua New Guinea. Guests are invited to see these rare animals and learn how to make a difference by making sustainable purchases of coffee or chocolate. Visitors listen to experts describe how scientists are improving the future of tree kangaroos, enjoy live music by a Didgeridoo performer, and participate in the tree kangaroo augmented reality experience online and on-site via mobile app.
Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo are participating members of AZA’s Tree Kangaroo of Papua New Guinea SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) program.
This collaboration allows us to spread awareness about tree kangaroos and promote World Tree Kangaroo Day.

Gainesville’s favorite Halloween treat for families is returning for the 27th year. The students and staff transform the zoo into a spooky but safe trick-or-treating event for the whole family, with multiple themed areas and candy stations. In addition to the festivities and trick-or-treating in the zoo, community organizations will have crafts, activities, live entertainment, games, food and even more candy in front of the zoo!
Admission to the event is one canned good or non-perishable food item per person. Cans collected help local charities feed families in need around our community. In 2022, Boo at the Zoo collected 5,627 non-perishable food items to donate to Catholic Charities and Saints Food Share at Santa Fe College.
