They always buy travel insurance and do quite a bit of research before they go. They prefer to travel without a strict itinerary because it allows them the flexibility of meeting new friends along the way, avoiding trouble areas and not losing deposits on specific reservations. They’ve also determined that climate change leads to adverse conditions in some locations. Areas of interest may be subject to floods, fires and extreme temperatures. “But we meet people of all backgrounds, all countries, and we form

bonds with them,” Fish says. In western Mongolia, for example, the couple witnessed a disappearing culture — there’s a long history of herding camels, oxen and other animals — but the new generations no longer want that lifestyle. They prefer city life, not one where men herd the animals, and women tend the home fires, prepare the meals, sew and raise the children. “It is not sustainable, partly due to global warming,” Fish says. On a trip to Morocco, she and Rappaport befriended two young men in a local drum and carpet store who then became their guides and traveled with Fish and Rappaport in their car. It gave them an opportunity to ride camels and sleep in tents in the Sahara Desert. Some of Fish’s adventures have been life-threatening, “dicey” situations. In the Colorado River, their boat got caught in a deep hole in reverse, with the raft caught on its side. The couple struggled to escape the hole for several

trekking in Nepal, they hired seven Nepalese to help them with cooking and carrying gear. Along the way, some destitute individuals heard about Fish and sought medical help from her. One man had an irregular heartbeat and told Fish his neck and shoulders were in constant pain. She had him lay on the ground and she gave him a chiropractic adjustment. “Then he got up and the heart issue was gone,” she says. “I don’t pretend to say I can cure it, but adjusting the vertebrae in his spine that controlled the nerves to his heart immediately stopped the irregular heartbeats and eliminated the pain in his neck and back.” On alpine trips, she typically meets the same people repeatedly, and has given many of them 10 to 15 treatments for foot, hip and side pain. Even though she has been on many adventures over the years, Fish did not start climbing summits until she was age 55. At age 56, she climbed Mount Hood five times in five weeks, “because I could. I am averse to aging. Even though you are not as fast as you used to be and your endurance is a little less, your body can be conditioned at any age.” She also loves the Pacific Northwest. While she is a curious person by nature and feels fortunate to have had the journeys she’s had, “you don’t have to go halfway around the world to have adventures,” she says. ‘Oregon and the Northwest are wonderful places for water sports, hiking, skiing, biking and much more.” Concerned about climate change, Fish bought and manages a 10-acre forest in Washington. She has planted 1,500 trees and numerous native shrubs. The trees have grown 60 to 70 feet high, and Fish has no plans to cut them down. She also sold her pain clinic, Center for Chiropractic and Pain Rehabilitation in NE Portland, and now does Alzheimer’s research, and using functional medicine protocols for autoimmune diseases. ☸

STAYING FIT: To keep her body in peak physical condition, Fish follows the Beach Body program because it covers yoga, Pilates, aerobics, weight lifting, high intensity interval training, dance, biometrics and more. She exercises almost daily in her home gym, but also visits a gym, finding them “boring, but necessary.” “You must use your body to continue to have an active life as you age,” Fish says. “A strong body gives you confidence. The human body, as long as you live, is capable of being strengthened and improving its function.” minutes, submerged in freezing water up to their chins before finally being able to right the raft. While rafting through a narrow canyon in southern Arizona, they reached a steep wall and their boat flipped over. This had never happened before, and it was a frightening experience, Fish says. However, again, they were able to get the boat upright and escape the harrowing situation. “I’ve been lucky,” she says, “especially in the Grand Canyon.” Climbing mountains has meant following narrow trails, holding onto cables and looking down thousands of feet where a fall would mean certain injury or death. Fortuantely, that didn’t happen. At times, Fish has been able to use her skills as a chiropractor to help others she meets. When she and Rappaport were

does not operate a facility. The birds are all quarantined, placed in personal homes throughout the area, and treated as members of the family, according to website information. EBR seeks adopters who want longterm companions and are willing to learn how to properly care for a bird,

Smith says. “All of our adopters must complete a free bird care class and pass a home safety visit,” she adds. “There is an adoption fee, which includes their cage, toys and some food. Usually the adoption fees are quite a bit less than someone would pay for a bird from a pet store or directly from a breeder.” Classes are held in the Portland and Eugene areas, as well as online using a new videoconference format. Register for classes at rescuebird.com. “The bird care classes are extremely important to everyone who wants to adopt since information about bird care changes so often,” Smith says. “On a regular basis we will have someone who has owned birds for 20 years come to class and learn something new. Our classes are not limited to potential adopters, anyone can attend the free class.” Taking a bird care class is a must to foster a bird, Smith says. “If someone wants to foster, they must also pass the home safety visit, just like potential adopters,” she says. “After they pass the home visit, they can then fill out the foster application. Once they are approved to foster, they will get to choose which birds they want to work with from a waitlist. The more fosters we have, the more birds we can help.” Adopters proclaim: “Chico makes me laugh every day with his antics and the crazy things he says”; “I really want to wrap Loki up in a pink blanket and hold

her like a baby!”; and Frankie “is my buddy and I could not imagine my life without him.” “Caring for exotic birds is expensive,” Smith says. “We strive to consistently maintain a minimum level of care for each bird. The minimum level of care includes vet visits, quality food, safe cages, toys, and any items needed for special needs birds.” Donations can be made through the EBR website by clicking the donate button or by sending an email to ebr@ rescuebird.com. “We also offer a Senior Companion Bird Program to senior communities such as retirement homes and assisted living facilities,” Smith says. “This program provides birds who are difficult to adopt out or who have been in rescue for an extended period of time, a loving place to call home where they will receive and give attention. “We provide training to whoever is going to care for them, place a flight cage of parakeets or cockatiels in a common area, and then continue to support them longer term,” she adds. “The facility is responsible for fresh vegetables and fruit, and we provide the rest. This a free program.” For more information, contact EBR at 541-461-4333. ☸ Note: Some classes and adoptions may be affected by shutdowns and social distancing requirements.

Diffusers with pet-appeasing pheromones can also be used to provide them with a greater sense of security. Leave out a wellworn shirt or a cozy blanket with your scent on it for them to curl up on or cuddle. ▶ Keep them stimulated and entertained. Establish a daily play schedule for meaningful interaction with your cats. Have them chase after the laser’s red dot or engage them with various wand toys — activities that help build their confidence and strengthen their bond with you. And be generous with those high-value treats. Ensure that at least one window has a cat tree, perch or bed in front of it to allow them to look out at the world. Then, as you head out the door, put down a puzzle toy for them to work on and hold their attention indefinitely. If, despite all of these preparations, you believe your cats may be suffering from stress while you’re gone, the most effective way to determine the extent of it is through the use of a home monitor. Recording their behaviors allows you to work on modifying those behaviors and helps ensure that your cats’ “home alone” environment is as pleasant as possible. ☸ Crazy about cats? Infused Water

NORTHWEST LIVING  |  FOOD & DRINK

MIX UP A REFRESHING, FRUITY SUMMER DRINK

WHAT’S SO APPEALING ABOUT INFUSED WATER?

Let’s admit it — drinking plain water is boring. Infusing ordinary water with fruit, vegetables or herbs makes us want to drink more. Something as simple as adding slices of cucumber, limes and a sprig of mint looks appealing and tastes refreshing.

DOES DRINKING INFUSED WATER HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT?

Drinking infused water will not help you lose weight. But choosing infused water instead of soda or alcoholic drinks may lower your overall caloric intake.

12  NORTHWEST 50 PLUS  MARION POLK - METRO  |  JULY 2020

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO ADDING FRUITS AND VEGETABLES?

Drinking water infused with fruits, veggies and herbs is a simple and healthy way to make ordinary water more appealing. While infused water does not typically contain enough nutrients to make a significant health contribution, these beverages encourage good fluid intake without adding extra sugar or artificial ingredients. Put simply, infused water tastes great, so we are more likely to drink it.

WHAT ARE THE GENERAL BENEFITS OF DRINKING WATER?

Staying hydrated, especially in the warm summer months, is important — your body is 60% water. Water is important in your body in the following ways: • Regulates body temperature through sweat. • Facilitates blood flow. • Lubricates and cushions joints. • Moisturizes skin and mucous membranes (dry eyes and mouth can be uncomfortable). • Transports nutrients and oxygen. • Regulates digestion (and reduces constipation, which is more common as we age).

By N I K I ST R E A LY

HOW CAN I MAKE MY OWN FRUIT-INFUSED WATER?

There are many ways to make infused water. Here is one way: Wash and cut fruit. Rub herbs between your fingers to encourage the flavor to pop out. Add roughly 2 cups fruit/veggie + 1-2 tablespoons herbs to large pitcher, or consider investing in a glass pitcher with an infusing lid. Use smaller quantities of fruit and herbs if planning to serve in a single-serving mason jar. • Pour water over fruit/veggies. • Allow to “marinate” overnight or at minimum 2-3 hours. • Serve water over ice. Add sprigs of herbs on top as garnish. • Another fun variation — use sparkling mineral water instead of tap.

HERE ARE MY FAVORITE COMBINATIONS

• Lavender Lemon • Blackberry Pomegranate • Strawberry Basil Lemon • Blackberry Orange Ginger • Blueberry Rosemary • Lemon Ginger • Peach and Basil • Cucumber Mint

DOES IT NEED TO BE REFRIGERATED?

How long it lasts depends on what flavor combinations you used. For example, basil lasts several days, but rosemary may last a week. I recommend keeping it refrigerated in between uses. Toss when fruit starts to brown or looks unappealing.

WHAT FRUITS, VEGETABLES AND HERBS WORK BEST?

Fruits: Oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, peaches, watermelon, kiwi, pomegranate, whole berries such as blueberries (give them a little squish first), raspberries, strawberries, or blackberries. Vegetables: Cucumber. Herbs: Mint, basil, chamomile, dill, spearmint, peppermint, lemon thyme, lemon verbena, lemongrass, lemon balm, rosemary, ginger, sage, lavender. I recommend using fresh produce if you’re planning to let it steep overnight because frozen fruit can get soggy and doesn’t look as appealing. I recommend frozen fruit if you are making the infused water last minute.

ANOTHER FUN TRICK: MAKE INFUSED WATER ICE CUBES! Cut up herbs or fruit. Add to standard ice cube trays and fill the trays halfway with water. Push herbs down with your finger, as they tend to float. Allow 2-3 hours to freeze. Then take out ice cube tray and add more water until full. Once these are frozen solid, you can either leave in the tray, or pop out and put in a Ziplock bag for fruit/herb ice cubes that can be added to liven up your water anytime. W

E NEED TO TALK” is a phrase that can bring anyone to their knees.

It’s something that many of us have heard at different points in time and from different people. Be it bosses, parents, teachers, friends or partners, it’s almost always nerve-wracking to hear. It’s no surprise, then, that on hearing these words, or anything similar, our defenses go up. It’s not always about getting ahead of each other. UNDERSTAND destroy them. Follow these tips to work on your communication skills. TRULY HEAR THEM OUT. Many times, we listen to bits of conversation that we only want to hear. We pick and choose; we filter out things that don’t align with our opinions, beliefs and mood. It’s easy to do this. It’s also easy to zone out and put on the pretense of a listening ear — but it takes a lot more to be present and give someone your undivided attention. Your attention and your time are some of the biggest gifts we can offer one another. Practice attention and put away your phone and other distractions just for that moment of conversation. EMPATHIZE. Put yourself in their shoes. Are they going through something major? Is it a situation you’ve been in before? Or perhaps you can’t relate, but you know this person needs you to see things from their perspective. Empathy can be the difference between feeling heard and feeling hurt. Think about this the next time someone asks for your time. GIVE THEM SPACE TO OPEN UP. Don’t interrupt — even if you have an eerily similar story or situation to share or you know someone who knows someone who knows of a person that went through the same. That person who’s opening up to you? They just want you to

be there for them. Let them finish what they’re saying, and let them be vulnerable. Don’t impose feelings, project ideas or put words in their mouth. MAKE EYE CONTACT AND REPEAT WHAT YOU HEAR. This is a trick that helps with any sort of communication. Evading eye contact can cause a disconnect and distance, which is why people breaking contact do it to avoid tension or awkwardness. Hold their gaze, make them feel seen, focus on them and, when you can, repeat what you think they said. The last bit helps contextualize things and clear miscommunication, too. Most importantly, listen with the heart as much as you do with the ear. You never know whose life you can change and/or the difference you can make just by active listening and being there for them. ☸ John Hughes is owner of ComForCare in Salem.
