VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH CANINE CORPS March 2021

Happy Spring from all of us at Center 50 +

I will call this lady, Sue. She contacted Dale Turner at dturner@ cityofsalem.net (phone Heidi Miller 503-588-6303). Dale is the Coordinator of the Center 50+ Canine Corps of the Friendship Brigade. Sue requested a canine visit. On this particular day of the visit, Sue was told in advance, that two canines wanted to visit her! Lexie the Golden Retriever, trainer, Dale Turner and Barney the Springer Spaniel, trainer Jay and Kathy Hendricks, arrived with their individual trainers and visited with Sue outdoors in a covered area. These dogs are so well trained that they love to be petted and talked to with absolutely NO JUMPING! The smile and joy in Sue’s face reflects her happiness and relaxation from whatever anxiety she was feeling. Even if it is cold outside, bundle up and visit with a warm hearted 4-legged friend outside in a covered area (even a doorway). Relax and let comfort and joy fill your heart. These 4-legged trained friendly dogs are just waiting for a call to visit. Just contact Dale Turner of Center 50+.

IT TAKES A LIFETIME TO GET THIS FIT Gut Healing Foods Citrus Fruits: This includes lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit, as well as many more hybrids and varieties. Citrus fruits are an excellent source of fiber. It is recommended to consume 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories consumed, just one cup of orange segments contains four grams of fiber. Compared to other fruits and vegetables, citrus fruits have a higher ratio of soluble to insoluble fiber.

Leeks: Leeks come from the same family as onions and garlic. Due to their insulin content, leeks promote healthy gut bacteria and help in the breakdown of fat. Leeks are also high in flavonoids, which support the body's response to oxidative stress. Lastly, leeks contain a high amount of vitamin K which provides benefits for the heart and bones. Bananas: Bananas supply not one but two types of prebiotics. In addition to FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides, or FOS for short. FOS work their magic in the colon where they're fermented by the good bacteria that live there.), they also contain resistant starch, a prebiotic that encourages the growth of healthy gut microbes while simultaneously lowering levels of unhealthy bacteria. Because ripening breaks down bananas' resistant starch, eat them as green as possible. Sauerkraut: Consuming fermented foods has many benefits on the body especially on the microorganisms in our stomach. The live bioactive enzymes, B vitamins, and organic acids on the fermented foods can improve the body’s digestive functions and balance the levels of bile, acid, and pancreatic enzymes in the digestive tract. Bone Broth: One way to ensure absorption of enough nutrients is by consuming bone broth. This food (or soup) is basically made from animal bones such as beef, lamb, venison, turkey, fish, pork, and chicken. The bone marrow contains numerous amounts of nutrients that are essential for boosting the immune system and helps in building healthier cells especially in the blood.

Oregon Lighthouses Lighthouses are one of the more romanticized subjects in the history of this and other nations. The dutiful and solitary life of a lighthouse keeper has long been a source of fascination for writers and filmmakers. They have been called “America’s castles” and have come to hold a firm place in hearts of many Americans; symbols of stability; both in their strength against the weather and in the loyal dependability of their keepers. Learn which Oregon lighthouse is the shortest, the tallest, the oldest, the most difficult to build, the only one that has never been deactivated, and more. RESPITE RESPITE GAMES  Here is a fun game to do as we start having some nicer weather. You might have heard the expression “We look but we don’t often see!” Take a walk around your neighborhood. Don’t only look but also see. Answer the following questions based on your observations. You can do this before going outside to see how many answers you may already know, or you can go outside to answer the questions while observing your surroundings. 1. How many streetlights are there on your block? 2. How many fire hydrants are there? 3. What color is the house next to yours? 4. How many people in your neighborhood have green lawns in front? 5. How many trees are there at houses on your street? 6. Are there house numbers on the curbs in your neighborhood? 7. Do any of your neighbors have basketball hoops? 8. How many windows are there in the front of your home?  This is a great activity for working on the power of observation. There are many other activities you can do to encourage your loved one to really observe closely. Try putting together an activity like this one with objects in your living room or in your back yard. You can even turn a walk in a scavenger hunt.

A RESPITE ZOOM PRESENTATION Avoid Caregiver Burnout: Be the best caregiver you can be without losing yourself in the process.

Canine Corps  It’s been a long year since Friendship Brigade and Canine Corps’ friendly dogs have been able to visit their friends living in care settings. All of us—the Friendly Dogs of Canine Corps and the Friendship Brigade volunteers—can’t wait to visit again. Meanwhile the Canine Corps continues to conduct window and/or door visits to seniors throughout the community.  “We practice social distancing and everyone wears masks – no exceptions.” Canine Corps coordinator, Dale Turner says. “The dogs look forward to the visits as much as the humans.”  Tails start wagging when one of our friendly dog teams gets ready to head out for a day of visits.  “Oh, they know!” Dale says. “The dogs recognize ‘the preparation ritual.’ There’s extra special grooming, wiping down the leash and collar, restocking the treat bag, maybe a new and festive bandana tied around their neck, and that special tone of voice their human uses when it’s time to go. Put all those together and dogs know something special is about to happen.”  If you would like to schedule a safe, socially distanced and fun friendly dog visit, please contact Dale Turner for more information at 503-588-6303 or dturner@cityofsalem.net.

Do you feel like you are taking on the weight of the world? Are you wondering how you can keep going from day to day? Are your loved one’s needs taking every moment you have while leaving little time for yourself? If you’ve answered yes to these questions, come to this presentation, and get some real tools you can start implementing today to improve your health tomorrow.  Karen Lewis, with Willamette Valley Hospice and Palliative Care will be presenting. Karen has a heart for caregivers, serving as her father’s caregiver before he passed in 2000. She’s trained as a facilitator with a degree in Family Studies from Corban University and has worked with Willamette Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, centering around ongoing education and outreach to communities and families.  She has a unique perspective for simplifying life and setting up a system that will create calm out of chaos. Join us on March 16, 2021 from 12:00 1:00 PM to learn all about it.
