JANUARY 2021

DIRECTORS COMMENTS:

FRIENDSHIP BRIGADE The Canine Corps says, “Honor a Dog, Honor Yourself!” Oregon’s winter clouds and liquid sunshine will be with us for the next few months. We are used to that. What we are not used to is a holiday season –and an entire year—like the one we just experienced. And the remnants of 2020 are bound to be with us for a while. But, Dale Turner the Canine Corps coordinator thinks he knows how to make it a better year. Schedule a friendly dog visit from the Canine Corps today! “Did you know that August 26 is National Dog Day?” Dale asks. “But truth be told, we think every day is a great Dog Day. So, let’s make it a better year by celebrating the “Dog Days of 2021” with lots of friendly dog visits!” Why a visit with a dog? Here’s what folks have told us about their experience(s) with the Canine Corps and our friendly dog visits: • “When a dog comes to visit, even for just a few minutes, I’m smiling for the whole day.” • “After a dog visit, I have something fun to tell my family and friends.” • “Life is better after visiting with a dog.”

– All the best to you and yours, Director, Center 50+

“So, while we are honoring dogs this year, we are actually honoring

As a reminder, at least until the COVID outlook is better, the Canine Corps conducts window and/ or door visits as well as outdoor visits only with social distancing and masks required. ourselves all year, too.” Dale says. “It’s a win-win!”

We have all been staying safe at home for over 9 months now. It is easy to start eating too much and moving to little. I know we can turn it around in 2021. As you begin working towards those New Year’s Resolutions I hope that you will include getting involved at Center 50+ and allow us to walk along your side cheering you on as you work towards all your physical and emotional health goals. Although our Center is closed for drop-in activities, we are still very busy bringing services to your front porch or virtually. WE ANSWER THE QUESTION:

uestion: “I was my sister’s only living relative. Q For the past 15 years, I acted as my sister’s Power of Attorney for her financial and property matters. I wrote out her checks and made sure her finances were in order. My sister passed away last week. I went to the bank to withdraw some money from her savings account in order to cover her funeral expenses. I was shocked when the banker told me that I no longer had authority to withdraw money because I am not a co-owner of the account or the beneficiary of the account. I was told that my Power of Attorney is no longer valid because my sister passed away. Is this true?”

nswer: The banker is correct. A Power of Attorney A automatically terminates upon the death of the principal, your sister. Your authority to manage your sister’s

affairs ended when your sister passed away. Because you and your sister did not have a joint account, or you were not the beneficiary on the account, the account will likely go through probate to determine what will happen to the money in this account. It sounds like your sister did not

have a Will. A Will would determine who is in charge of administering her estate and who inherits her estate. The Will names a personal representative who petitions the Probate Court for his or her appointment. Once appointed, the personal representative is authorized to deal with all facets of the estate, including obtaining insurance payments, paying creditors’ claims, signing releases, listing real property for sale, transferring bank accounts, and any other duties that become necessary. If your sister died without a Will, then you can petition the Probate Court to be appointed to administer the estate. Once you are appointed, you will have authority to manage your sister’s estate. The probate process can be fairly lengthy and sometimes complicated. An estate attorney can assist you and guide you through the process. The estate will pay for the attorney. For more information or to update your estate planning documents, call Kathy Belcher or Christopher Hamilton at 503-371-9636.

IT TAKES A LIFETIME TO GET THIS FIT What Can I do To Stay Motivated to Lose Weight? Find an Activity you Enjoy: We are all different in the types of clothes we like, food we like, music we like…. Why would workouts be any different? In order to achieve long term success it is important to find a plan or activity that you enjoy. Waking up every day to do something you love makes it easier to stick to your goals. Get off the phone, computer or tv: Your brain can only handle so much stimulation in a day. Activities like being on the computer or binge watching TV cause a quick overload of stimulation, due to this, the mind feels exhausted leaving you feeling unmotivated to do anything else. Limit your time on your screens and add a more physically strenuous activity to your day, like working out or going for a walk with friends. Know what you’re doing: One reason we tend to be unsuccessful in weight loss is because we don’t believe in what we are doing. Perhaps you aren’t really sure if it’s going to actually work so you hesitate to put all of your effort into it. If you don’t believe it what you're doing it makes it hard to believe that you are going to get the results you want. Find a plan that fits you…. “When you kinda do something you kinda get results.” Don’t rely solely on the scale or mirror: The scale and mirror don’t tell the whole story so don’t rely on them as the end all be all of your weight loss success. Mirrors and scales should be used as tools to measure your progress. It would be easy to get discouraged by a number on the scale, but keep in mind there are many reasons why your weight might fluctuate even overnight such as stress, hormones, water retention or meal timing. If you are planning to take your weight daily then only look at the weekly average for a more accurate picture. The same goes with looking into a mirror, it’s not always easy to see every change when you are used to seeing yourself every day. Take weekly progress photos and compare them to see the changes. Be Flexible with Your Nutrition: Eating the same meals day in and day out makes it extremely difficult to stick to your goals. Studies have shown that restricting your diet puts you at a higher risk of binging on the food you are trying to avoid. It is important to learn the basics of nutrition, knowing what to eat and when helps put you in charge of your weightloss goals. Missing out on social events because they include food can negatively impact your psychological well-being. Find a balance that works for you.

Exercises: When completing the following exercises, it is important to stay within your own abilities. We are all at different fitness levels so please feel free to adjust your sets and repetitions where needed.

March or jog in place: 1 minute Wall Sit: 2 reps- 30 sec. each

Instructions 1. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook until soft and lightly browned around the edges, 8 to 10 minutes, reducing the heat to low as needed. 2. With the heat on low, add the garlic, ginger, curry powder, and red pepper flakes and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 2 minutes. 3. Add the tomatoes, lentils, water, coconut milk, ½ teaspoon salt, and several grinds of black pepper. Bring to a boil, cover, and reduce to a simmer, stirring only occasionally, until the lentils are tender, 25 to 35 minutes. If your soup is too thick, stir in 1/2 to 1 cup more water to reach your desired consistency. 4. Stir in the cilantro and lime juice. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve. Notes Store leftover soup in the fridge for up to 4 days. If it thickens too much in the fridge, stir in a little water while you reheat it until you reach your desired soup consistency. This soup also freezes well.

ACTIVITIES TO MAINTAIN YOUR BRAIN Though it’s often enjoyable to do the same activities over and over, it’s good to try new ones that are challenging. Trying new activities increases the growth of new neurons and adds to brain reserve. Here is a list of activities that can increase the new growth of new neurons in the brain. • Count backwards from 100 by 5’s, 2’s, 3’s, or 7’s. • Find a picture in a magazine or an entire magazine and name as many things that begin with a certain letter of the alphabet. These can be specific or abstract such as for the let “B”- books, bodies or beaches or bright, big grins, or bold. Think outside the box! • Create an A to Z list of food, flowers, geographical names, etc. • Do word searches, sudoku, and other challenging puzzles. • Write, eat, brush your teeth, ect., with your non-dominant hand. • Learn a few words in a new language including sign language. • Learn to play an instrument. Listen to music you haven’t ever listened to before. • Sing, sing, sing! • Play board games that are stimulating, fun and challenging. • Read and write daily. • Get outside daily. • Socialize. • Attend classes, lectures, concerts, plays, ect. • Debate and discuss popular issues with others • Develop new hobbies • Get plenty of exercise. This is one of the most important things you can do for your memory!

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 2020 FOR CENTER 50+ AND FOR THE CITY OF SALEM

ALL THE BAGGERS AND DRIVERS OF 2020

A tremendous thank you to those who served 222 recipients of the Center 50+ weekly grocery and necessity items during 2020. 10 volunteers filled bags on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday on a weekly basis and 29 drivers delivered on Wednesday and Thursday to those who signed up for the program in the Salem-Keizer area. Some drivers, individually, delivered up to 17 bags to individual families on a regular basis. These drivers counted on GPS to navigate routes and in apartment complexes initially had to circle around to find the right apartment number. The drivers since March have experienced all kinds of weather from high heat to rain and hail, road closures and road work delays. There was a continuous call-out for more volunteer drivers as the number of recipients continued to grow. There was never a shortage of volunteers coming forward to complete an application and background check and help. The gift of volunteer help warms the heart of so many. A sincere thank you from so many.
