Director’s Comments: Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy. As you can see from this month’s articles everyone continues to be busy connecting folks with programs and services. Please join us as we try new ways to keep connected: • Facebook, • Cityofsalem.net website • KBZY Radio 1490 a.m. • Phone Call Bingo every Friday at 2p.m. call 425-5359455 • Virtual Walking Clubs, Health and Wellness Challenges and more What have you been doing during this pandemic? I would love to hear from you. Please send us photos and short descriptions of how you have been keeping your mind, body, and spirit in check during this challenging time. These items can be emailed to connect50plus@cityofsalem.net. Your items will be included on Facebook and next month’s NW 50+ Magazine. In addition to offering virtual programming and providing care/food boxes to seniors, Center 50+ staff have been busy cleaning, organizing, and getting caught up on much needed projects like our Operations Manual, updated procedures to meet the new health and safety standards, and spruced up our technology skills. We look forward to launching our new Volunteer Management Software and Patron Check-in System when everyone returns. Our building has not been this clean or organized since our grand opening in October 2008. We have now added new efficiencies and updated our technology to better serve our community. We are pretty excited to launch our new FriendsofCenter50plus.com web-site. Friends of Center 50+ is a non-profit fundraising group that supports Center 50+ through volunteer staffing and financial contributions. They are the group that funds specialized programming, special events, and free programming. Here you will find an updated list of special projects such as Friendship Brigade and Friendly Caller Programs, announcement of upcoming Fundraising events- including the Virtual Picnic Day (be sure to pick up your gourmet lunch basket curbside at Center 50+) and then enjoy your picnic at a local park or at home, and much more. The web-site also lists other fun ways to support Center 50+ and treat your friends to a celebration. The Center now offers front porch or front lawn Happy 50th Birthday Decorations including: Your first bucket to start filling with your bucket list and a few treats to help you ring in the second half of your life. This is such a fun way to honor the big 50 even when we can’t have big parties right now. Are you looking for ways to help others during Covid-19? There is a link for that too. We continue to navigate this challenging time. Although we do not have a definitive opening date we continue to prepare for our future while doing our best to serve you now. If you have not already done so, please be sure to complete our patron questionnaire. The feedback we receive from the questionnaire will help us better prepare for our future opening and respond to your needs right now. The link can be found on the City of Salem’s web-site at www.cityofsalem.net

Q

WE ANSWER THE QUESTION:

uestion: “My wife has Alzheimer’s. She and I have several bank accounts. All of the accounts are in both of our names except one account. This account is in my wife’s name only and her social security and pension are deposited into this account. My wife is unable to sign banking documents or checks to pay for things she used to pay for out of her account. Some of these bills are large and important, like our mortgage, and I need to use that account. Can I sign for her as her husband or do I need to get a power of attorney?”

A

nswer: I am sorry about your wife’s condition. But, you cannot sign legal documents for your wife or access her individual bank account in your capacity as her husband. You say your wife has Alzheimer’s and can no longer sign documents. Issues of capacity are very complex. Incapacity does not affect all people and all functions in the same way. Thus, even a person with a disease such as Alzheimer’s, especially in the early stages, can have the capacity to make some decisions and may not necessarily be “incapacitated”. It may be possible for your wife to give you power of attorney. Generally, in order for a durable power of attorney to be

valid, the person granting the power of attorney should have sufficient capacity to understand the nature and enduring effect of the power of attorney. They should be capable of understanding the range of decisions the appointed agent can make on their behalf. And, they should also understand that the agent can make decisions without consulting them. If your wife is capable of understanding the above, then she may be able to give you a power of attorney that will allow you to take care of necessary financial, banking, tax, legal and other matters if your wife is unable to do so. If your wife no longer has the above required capacity, then it is too late for her to grant you power of attorney. In that case, you may need to petition the court to have yourself appointed as your wife’s guardian and conservator. You should speak with an Elder Law attorney to help you understand your options and how best to meet the needs of you and your wife. For more information or to update your estate planning documents, call Kathy Belcher or Christopher Hamilton at 503-371-9636.

Volunteer of the Month I have asked volunteers what and how they are doing during this long quarantine period. This literally off the wall story topped them all. This couple have a relatively new cat that they adopted. They had not let her outside until recently. They came home and the cat was guarding the bathroom. The female human decided to look in the bathroom and surprise- surprise a chipmunk was in the shower! Yelling for her male human, he hurried in stating get me some towels!! Towels came flying! The chipmunk escaped into their bedroom under their bed. The humans, like many of us, stored items under the bed and moved them all out – dust bunnies flying! The chipmunk escaped to the living room while the humans tried to get back up off their knees. The male human “softly” yelled -take the cushions off the furniture and block the door ways. Turn the couch over as the chipmunk may be under there. At one point a leaf blower was brought in the house…Suddenly it occurred to them to open the front door. The chipmunk ran out so happy to be free of the crazy humans. Kristi and Bobyou looked around at the mess in the in their living room, A special thank to this year’s corporate sponsors bedroom, -Home and bathroom theProvidence cat (Pippin) Health could not understand what had Insteadand and Plan. just happened! It Takes a Lifetime to Get This Smart! Dear Students,

We are proud of our instructors and how they touch our lives with ongoing classes, they help us learn more about ourselves and each other. They step forward with great courage, patience and trust, all to help us be good learners, help us take it to the next level or help us to really “master” something. This month we feature an instructor who bravely took on offering her classes online. Several of her students are featured here in this section with their paintings. We announce online classes on our Facebook page, Center 50+. You can also check to see what online classes are offered by going to this link: https://egov.cityofsalem.net/Center50Plus/Activity. In order to participate, you will need internet connection for either a laptop computer, desk computer with camera and microphone, a smartphone or tablet. If you have more questions about online classes, please call 503-588-6349.

Best Friends and Activities

Time with Friends and Among Friends Respite use the Best Friends approach to activities. What a person with dementia needs most of all is a friend, a “Best Friend.” This can be a family member or a friend who empathizes with their situation, remains loving and positive, and is dedicated to helping the person feel safe, secure and valued. Activities is not what is done, it is in the doing. People living with dementia and Alzheimer’s can get bored which can be discouraging, so providing stimulating activities that engage your loved one can bring pleasure and lessen the persons anxiety and irritability. Here is a list of activities to do with your loved ones living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. 1. Exercise and physical activity 2. Reminisce about their life 3. Arts and crafts 4. Cooking and baking 5. Animal therapy 6. Puzzles 7. Explore nature 8. Read their favorite book 9. Simple and fun activities such as; • Jigsaw puzzles – as dementia progresses, fewer pieces will be necessary • Crosswords • Dominoes • Board games • Untying knots – this gets their hands working and requires a surprising amount of focus • Sudoku • Coloring 10. Engage them in their favorite topics 11. Music 12. Activities are everywhere. Activities should aim to: • Stir memories and allow them to reminisce about their life • Foster emotional connections with others – contact with others is vital • Encourage self-expression • Make them feel more engaged with life • Help them feel productive Here are pictures of our Respite members at home enjoying some of their favorite activities. If you would like activities emailed to you, please contact Center 50+ to be added to the list. If you are interest in learning more about The Adult Day Care program you can leave a message for Wendy Kilgore, Respite Coordinator at 503 588-6303.
