At the end of each year, I always take some time to reflect on how customers are going to “feel” heading into the New Year. Without question, the last 12 months has challenged us like never before with rising interest rates, increased cost of living, juggling work and family commitments and the challenge of finding trades to complete renovations or new builds. I think customers are feeling slightly anxious and uncertain and are seeking the very best value every time they step into a retail store. Yet there is also a glimmer of optimism appearing across the horizon, with interest rates stabilising, fuel prices coming down and better availability of products to choose from.

However, during these difficult times, it is important to spend a little bit of time caring for ourselves. It may be as simple as some much-needed time out, a walk along the beach or buying a few small luxuries to reward ourselves. At National Tiles, we understand that customers want to feel like their home has a touch of luxury about it – and in 2024 we will bring the best value, most luxurious looking tiles to our customers like never before. Exclusive ranges will dance with colour and quality, new stores will be opened in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, an innovative new visualiser will change the way you renovate forever and most importantly we will not be beaten on price. We want all our customers to enjoy a little bit of luxury when visiting National Tiles this year.

We also want to ensure that we don’t let our customers down with stock when they need it most. We have just completed and are operating under two new warehouses in Victoria and Queensland, both with space for over 20,000 sqm of tiles to service our customers. We are planning out further with our amazing supply partners to provide more certainty around production and demand. And when the next wave of new housing and renovations commence, we will strive to be your trusted partner as the largest family-owned tile business in Australia with a team who are passionate and responsive to your needs. I ‘feel’ if we deliver all of this, 2024 will be a very good year.

Designed with the needs of industry professionals in mind, our architectural folders provide a tangible and tactile experience, allowing users to interact physically with the various textures, colours, and patterns that define each range.

This hands-on approach enables specifiers and designers to make informed decisions by directly comparing and contrasting the unique characteristics of different tiles, ensuring they find the perfect fit for their projects. As Kristen Kocev from Cottee Parker Architects points out, “When selecting finishes, I usually browse online brochures, then confirm with physical samples. The folders give an indication of the colours and textures in the range, so I can easily check that they suit my project without having to order a ton of loose samples.”

“The folders allow me to make decisions quickly and easily. Another benefit is they are presentable and portable, so I can show options to clients.”

Folders that are currently available include Shore Line, Burlington Stone, Concrete Fusion, Ascoli, Gelati and Riviera. Architects, interior designers and specifiers – get in touch with your National Tiles representative to order complimentary copies.

Matching minimalism with inside-out design.

PRODUCT FOCUS 8 NATIONAL TILES

Over recent years, few creative concepts have taken such a hold on the Australian homeowner’s imagination as inside-out design. Of course, alfresco living is nothing new: we have long embraced outdoor living in all its forms. The difference now is that we are starting to run with the idea of projecting our kitchen or living room into the garden and aesthetically linking patios, terraces, and balconies back into our homes.

This trend has seen us incorporate more and more nature into our homes through houseplants, rich textures, and organic finishes. Now, as we turn our full attention to these outside spaces, this trend has seen us designing our gardens and outdoor spaces as direct extensions of our homes. And what really brings this look together are floor tiles. The latest porcelain styles are offered in a choice of surface finishes that allow the same, or almost identical, tiles to be used externally and internally for a truly seamless look.

It’s hardly surprising that neutral stone-effect tiles have led the way, bringing designs featuring subtle surface variety and neutral colours to the fore. They are timeless, very liveable, easy to clean, and work well with almost any architectural style. They also suit both large and more restricted spaces.

To truly master the insideout design trend, you need to think about your garden as a fifth room. Treat it as a true extension of your home. Transform it into a space that matches the rest of your house. Consider colour palettes just as you would when decorating a living room or kitchen. You can even take this a stage further and choose outdoor furniture that complements your living room or dining room style and then accessorise it with items that can be used both inside and out. This will help you to curate a truly cohesive space.

The Motley porcelain tile collection proves the popular adage ‘less is more’. National Tiles teamed up with one of Italy’s most respected porcelain tile manufacturers to offer Australian homeowners this versatile and utterly timeless collection.

Sizes: 600x600mm & 600x1200mm

Finishes: Natural & Structured

Other touches, such as choosing plants that work indoors and outdoors, unify this look, helping you create outdoor spaces that are just as inviting as your home itself.

If you have bi-fold doors opening out onto a patio, using matching floor tiles inside and out creates a perfect seamless expansion of your home, forming an illusion of more space.

One great choice is our Motley range, a collection that was created by mixing the look of classic split slates with their clear grains and soft shading and the fine-grained base and stronger colours of sedimentary stones. The fusion of these two natural materials has delivered a new aesthetic reference.

Motley is a subtle stone effect where minimalism becomes an expressive design language. By mixing the material power of classic split slates with the simple grainy surfaces and soft shading of popular sedimentary stones, the designers have redefined the textures and tones of both stone families to generate a new aesthetic reference that looks authentically natural… and yet does not exist in nature.

Motley comes in eight light, neutral, and natural tones. These adaptable colours range from the pale, warm beige shades of Mediterranean stones right through to dark charcoal greys that are more reminiscent of the colours of European Alpine slates.

One of the collection’s key characteristics is the vivid yet unobtrusive aesthetic, which features highly detailed graphics fully amalgamated into the splits and light surface layering. This is a product of cutting-edge digital decoration techniques and state-of-the-art ultra-matt material application.

Three different finishes are used across the range: Natural, Spazzolata, and Structured. All the external grade tiles have a structured finish.

This hard-wearing porcelain stoneware range can be used to transform patios, gardens, swimming pool surrounds, and terraces into pleasant environments for outside entertaining. Indeed, it is a range that is capable of elevating simple open spaces into the epitome of contemporary inside-out living. The different chromatic solutions embody stone’s minimalist appeal and will complement a wide range of modern or more traditional garden furniture and accessories.

mediterranean style

When Emma from Hamptons Diaries was ready to renovate the back garden of her home, she knew she wanted to transform the pool area into an indoor swimming pool space. The goal was to create a Mediterranean look whilst preserving the indoor/outdoor feel. Importantly she wanted it to be easy and practical to maintain, avoiding the leaves that constantly fall into the pool from the surrounding trees.

To achieve this, Emma designed a clear Colourbond roof with a structured aluminium frame to ensure the filtered light reflected the feel of the interior. She added transparent lockable outdoor blinds that completely enclose the entire area, ensuring security and transforming it into an indoor-outdoor space. Cost-effective acrylic sheets resembling glass windows were added to the top half of the walls, providing both durability and savings compared to traditional glass.

The floors are the focal point of Emma’s pool design. “I have always loved the Orvieto range of Italian tiles from National Tiles that are perfect for external use. I chose to combine the Orvieto Light Grey and Black tiles to create a timeless checkered tile design. The natural veins in these tiles resemble a beautiful marble look and add such a touch of elegance and enhance the entire aesthetic.”

The fifth season of Love It or List It Australia aired late last year on the Lifestyle Channel, and National Tiles was proud to have tiles specified in a number of featured homes, from Sandgate and Labrador in Queensland to Russell Lea and Miranda in NSW and Wheelers Hill in Victoria. The series follows home owners across the country who are struggling whether to renovate and love the home they are in, or to sell up and find a new dream home somewhere else. Real estate agent Andrew Winter is tasked with searching for a new home for the couple in their desired location that both meets their needs and stays within their desired budget. Meanwhile, interior designer Neale Whitaker is briefed on what the couples would like to see in their current house and his team undertakes the renovation to meet a budget. Home Beautiful

Last year Elle Lovelock, editor of one of Australia’s leading interior magazines, Home Beautiful, embarked on a renovation of her own home. Light, contemporary and comfortable, Elle shares her terrace home with her husband and her son, and she loves how the interior is filled with natural light all day.

She worked closely with National Tiles to select the perfect tiles for her bathroom and pavers for her alfresco area.

Explains Elle, “When we bought the house, it had a charming cabana complete with an outdoor kitchen in the backyard, but we never used it. It was going to cost too much to remove the structure, so we repurposed it instead. Now, the space functions as a greenhouse, dining area, storage shed and laundry. All beautifully styled, of course! The tiles from the cabana were in good condition, but didn’t suit the new aesthetic, so we laid beautiful travertine pavers in Oyster Grey from National Tiles over the top. They patina beautifully so they’ll age well.

For the interior, our bathrooms were perfectly functional, but they didn’t reflect our aesthetic – or the practical needs of having a toddler in the house! To keep a lid on the bathroom renovation costs, it’s so important to make sure you get the floorplan right. As for the design, I went for a mix of marble chevron and terrazzo stone tiles. I absolutely love the way the patterns clash but the colour palette’s still the same. A Caroma ‘Liano’ bath sits against a backdrop of Carrara slim chevron mosaics and ‘Elegante’ terrazzo tiles in Nimbus from National Tiles.”

Terrazzo with a modern twist

RIVI ERA

The word ‘terrazzo’ comes from the Latin word for terrace because terrazzo was initially used on terraces and other outside spaces. Classic terrazzo is a composite material, poured in place or precast, that consists of chips of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or similar materials mixed with a cementitious binder. After the terrazzo mix has cured, it is ground and polished to a smooth finish to produce a uniformly textured, hard-wearing, beautiful surface.

Art Deco and Moderne stylists from the 1920s to 1940s fully embraced terrazzo. They particularly appreciated the use of dividers that allowed for straight or curved lines that increased the decorative options. Terrazzo enjoyed another period of popularity in the 1970s, when polymer-based ranges were introduced that offered a wider selection of colours, thinner tiles, lighter weight, faster installation, and enhanced physical properties.

14 NATIONAL TILES NOW AVAILABLE

In recent years, terrazzo has once again taken the design world by storm, and even highstreet fashion and industrial designers have succumbed to it. Today, you can see terrazzo everywhere in interior design: floors, walls, benches, worktops... and even textiles and other decorative accents.

Now, National Tiles has introduced this timeless style with a modern twist in Riviera: a terrazzoeffect 20x145mm crisp-edged porcelain strip mosaic. Supplied pre-mounted on 292x262mm sheets for ease of installation, the ten Riviera designs span a wide spectrum of styles.

Classic Venetian terrazzo featured handplaced marble fragments, while the more primitive seminato technique saw marble chips randomly scattered into the cement mix. The influence of both these schools can be seen in Riviera’s modern terrazzo designs.

They include lively and colourful stracciatellastyle creations, like Emerald and Mantle. These generate a feeling of spaciousness, with the inclusions shining out like differentsized jewels. Here, the distinctive feature is chromatic variety.

Other designs in the Riviera collection are more muted and considered, including tone-on-tone creations where the background and chips share a common colour palette. With these styles, the richness of the graphic detail is more about complementary tones than bold contrasts.

The 10 designs cover a wide colour spectrum, from white and beige through pink, green, and blue to grey, anthracite, and nearly black. Riviera thus has a design to complement most colour schemes.

Overall, Riviera draws on clear modernist inspiration to renew the currency of this classic style with subtle touches of brightness that will energise a wide variety of decorative styles.

These crisp terrazzo mosaics will work equally well on flat or curved surfaces, from arched doorways to snail showers. They are perfect for glamorous bathroom niches, feature splashbacks, or dramatic kitchen islands.

the new luxury

In the ever-evolving world of interior design, trends come and go, but some materials withstand the test of time. Travertine has been used in construction and design for centuries. Its history dates back to ancient Rome, where it adorned iconic structures such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.

This natural limestone continues to inspire and elevate interiors and alfresco spaces. Fast forward to the 21st century and design innovation has resulted in a Travertine-look porcelain tile that offers luxury and refinement to suit a contemporary lifestyle.

We are proud to offer natural Travertine at National Tiles, providing the home owner and the design community the beauty of this natural stone. However the ‘new luxury’ movement is a quest for the perfect synthesis of elegance and functionality, with well-priced materials that merge timeless classics with modern practicality. Travertine porcelain tiles provide a modern adaptation of this classic natural stone to not only capture the elegant aesthetics associated with luxury, but to offer the practical advantages that satisfy the demands of contemporary living. With groundbreaking innovative tile manufacturing technology, redefining luxury in the world of design is more practical, affordable and functional than ever.

Timeless Aesthetics, Modern Execution

Travertine porcelain tiles replicate the natural beauty of authentic Travertine with remarkable precision. The intricate patterns, warm tones, and organic variations that define genuine Travertine are faithfully reproduced in porcelain, ensuring a luxurious appearance that stands the test of time. This fusion of classic elegance and modern execution makes these tiles a perfect fit for the new luxury design trend, where there is a seamless balance between heritage and innovation.

Versatility and Adaptability

The adaptability of Travertine porcelain tiles is a game-changer in luxury design. Available exclusively at National Tiles, the Italian-made Mystone and Storica collections offer a range of range of sizes up to 600mm x 1200mm, with warm tones with an internal and external finish for seamless indoor/outdoor integration. The Ascoli range is part of our upgrade selection of tiles that offer an even more affordable alternative. Ascoli is produced

in an In/Out finish and has a matching 20mm porcelain paver. Each of these collections effortlessly adapt to diverse design styles. From sleek urban penthouses to a rustic countryside retreat, and from a high-end restaurant to a contemporary art gallery, the versatility of Travertine porcelain harmonises with any aesthetic, providing interior designers and homeowners with a broad palette for creative expression. To assist industry professionals with client consultations, we have developed design and specification presentation folders for the Ascoli and Mystone collections.

Durability without compromise

One of the defining features of Travertine porcelain tiles is their exceptional durability. Unlike natural Travertine, that is porous and therefore susceptible to staining and scratching and as such requires sealing and maintenance, porcelain tiles are highly resistant to wear and tear. This durability ensures that the luxurious appearance of the tiles remains intact over time, even in high-traffic areas making it ideal for commercial applications. The low maintenance requirements make Travertine porcelain an attractive option for those who seek both beauty and practicality in their living spaces.

Consistent Quality

Whilst natural stone can exhibit variations in colour and pattern, Travertine porcelain tiles offer consistency in quality. Each tile is manufactured to exact specifications, allowing for a more uniform appearance across the entire surface. This consistency enhances the overall aesthetic appeal and is particularly crucial in achieving a polished, luxurious look in modern design.

Travertine porcelain tiles have emerged as a versatile and practical solution for those seeking to embrace the new luxury design trend where design meets affordability. Their ability to seamlessly blend timeless aesthetics with modern functionality positions them as a key player in elevating interior spaces to new heights of sophistication and style without the hefty price tag, and with contemporary functionality. As the design world continues to evolve, Travertine porcelain tiles stand as a testament to the seamless marriage of tradition and innovation, offering a luxurious foundation for the homes and spaces of the future. Technology and innovation have never looked so good.

Cersaie

Held in Bologna, Italy in September each year, Cersaie is the world’s leading ceramic trade fair, and in 2023 it celebrated its 40th anniversary attracting 633 exhibitors and nearly 100,000 visitors. The event has evolved into a pivotal global marketplace for business meetings and discussions as well as a premier stage for showcasing the unrivalled wealth of technical innovations that Italy has developed over the decades.

National Tiles’ Executive General Manager, Global Sourcing, Camron Whittaker believes that Cersaie is a vital source of supply and inspiration. He explains, “To be able to see all of our European supply partners under one roof at one time of the year is invaluable, particularly because of our Australian geography and our ability to visit key partners – around 90% of whom exhibit their latest collections at Cersaie. It’s also important to understand what the key trends are and what technological and design advancements are being made in the tile industry so we can in turn ensure our customers have access to the very best there is on offer.”

Adds Camron, “Some of the tiles presented are immediately available, and tile manufacturers also use customer feedback to explore which new developments will be commercially viable for the year ahead. Two of our key partners, Mirage and Cerdomus, work closely with us to determine which collections will be best suited to the Australian marketplace. It’s important that we understand the key looks and trends for related industries like bathware, vanities and tapware so that we ensure our collections can marry well with the latest designs, styles and finishes. Cersaie also coincides with the Verona stone fair, Marmo & Mac, which makes the journey all the more valuable.”

Cersaie gives the Italian ceramic tile industry the opportunity to showcase extraordinary products, the latest aesthetic trends, and the most innovative technology that elevates Italian tiles to a truly unique level of offering and expertise.

As explained by Collagist and Consultant, Cristina Faedi, “Key trends displayed at Cersaie focus on stone-effect ceramic tiles that replicate the natural irregularities typical of the mineral world with variety and authenticity. The concrete look is experiencing a resurgence but departing from the

18 NATIONAL TILES TALKING DESIGN

brutalism of the 1950s and instead adopting a softer, more soothing characteristic. Onyx-effect ceramic tiles are also making a comeback, appreciated for their lightness, depth, vivid hues and subtle shading, while stone-look tiles with more pronounced effects reminiscent of lava, solidified magma and metal are also gaining prominence.”

There is an increasing desire for toneon-tone tiles with an indoor/outdoor finish and extra-thick 20mm slabs have been designed specifically for outdoor

golden veins run through porcelain slabs emulating Calacatta Gold marble.

Adds Cristina, “Colours lie at the heart of ceramic tiles, with a palette encompassing silky powder pinks, the transparent allure of quartz and the gentle hues of concrete all interplaying with various glossy and matt finishes to create original patterns. Ceramic marbles and onyxes also have a truly innovative look, with galaxy-like veins in shades of pink, violet, indigo and emerald, reminiscent of eye-catching semi-

use. Tiles are also becoming more and more popular for furnishing elements, with slabs that can be transformed into extendable tables, and strip tiles that can cover cylindrical forms and curved surfaces and create integrated washbasins with pedestals and double basins. Tiled kitchen and bathroom bench countertops in thicknesses ranging from 6mm to 30mm can now maximise the veined effect of the surface by extending seamlessly along the edge.

In other design trends, rich colour palettes, veined textures, bas-reliefs, tonal variations and gradient effects give tiles an extraordinary resemblance to the natural materials that inspired them, qualities that are faithfully reproduced across a wide variety of sizes. Smaller tiles, including strips and finger tiles, are also gaining in popularity and allow for original installation patterns together with polished, matte, shaded or toned effects. Gold permeates ultra-thin ‘ceramic wallpaper’ resembling precious damask or brocade fabric, soft to the touch with intricate patterns that create captivating and luminous backdrops, and

precious stones that impart an elegant sense of natural luxury. Metallic finishes offer a spectrum of iridescent hues from platinum, silver and graphite to brass, Verdigris and gold.”

Traditional materials such as raw earth and terracotta are experiencing a revival and are particularly in demand for their high levels of performance. Ceramic emphasises the ancestral material with its intricate details, colour variations and finishes that extend beyond the edges. Thanks to the use of new technology, the surface feels smooth to the touch while being ideal for outdoor use.

We look forward to introducing these new collections to National Tiles later this year, and to providing the local market with the very best in Italian quality, design and innovation.

The next Cersaie and Marmo & Mac trade fairs will be held from September 23rd to 27th, 2024.

KERRY-ANNEKONSTANTINOU people & culture

Driving the strength and positive journey of National Tiles’ number one resource –its people – defines the environment that People & Culture Executive Manager Kerry-anne Konstantinou fosters within the business.

Since her appointment as Human Resources Manager at National Tiles in 2014, Kerry-anne is proud of her dedication and commitment. She is always exploring ways to ensure National Tiles delivers and improves on best practice, building rapport with all stakeholders and team members and consistently being an approachable, knowledgeable and people-focused professional.

With a career spanning almost 30 years leading people and culture initiatives in both the motor industry and more recently home improvement and building business sector, Kerry-anne has always been focused on driving leadership across the organisation so everyone achieves the best results in their work efforts.

Her career has spanned various roles whilst in the motor industry, travelling around Australia running the company’s registered training organisation, formulating their official training program, and rolling it out across the country via the Motor People Training Academy. This is when she discovered her passion for recruitment, training, and workforce performance. She completed her studies in Human Resources, and that, combined with her accountancy studies and her

financial acumen, allowed her to immerse herself in the role of HR Manager for Motor One – whilst raising three young children with the support of her husband.

The role at National Tiles came along at the right time for Kerry-anne. She was ready for a new challenge and a fresh environment. She joined the team in 2014 as the company’s first People and Culture Manager.

“The leadership team at National Tiles knew they needed to channel efforts in the people management side of the organisation. At that time the laws had changed significantly in terms of workforce relations, and the company itself was on a steep growth trajectory. They were expanding rapidly and needed systems for growth management, particularly in terms of the health and safety of the team members. I was charged with creating systems and processes for the development of people across our expanding number of stores, and within the many facets of the business including administration, procurement, logistics, operations, technology, marketing, customer service departments, and for our warehouses. The year after I joined, we opened three stores in Adelaide, so we were at the stage where we needed improved levels of support for our people. The ongoing development of the people and culture strategy wasn’t just about employing and retaining the right people, it was about ensuring we offered the best opportunities for each individual’s journey within the organisation.”

Kerry-anne explains, “A thorough and considered interview process is critical to ensure we engage the right people for the many and varied roles on offer at National Tiles. It isn’t just about education, experience, and acumen, their values need to align with the company values which we honour and live by every day. We balance a casual workforce as well as a full-time workforce, so we are conscious of the varying needs and circumstances of each team member.”

22 NATIONAL TILES INSIDE STORY

National Tiles prioritises the employee life cycle and is firmly focused on each and every team member’s safety from an all-encompassing perspective; physically, mentally, socially, emotionally, and psychologically. “Our People and Culture processes are designed to nourish each person through their journey at National Tiles,” says Kerry-anne. “Retention via internal promotion and personal development is very important.

More than 25% of our team have been with the company for more than 5 years which is a wonderful reflection of the working environment we have fostered. We are recognised as a great company to work for because we remain a family business at our core, and we care deeply about our people.”

The greatest challenge is the management of the speed of National Tiles’ growth with the opening of new bricks and mortar stores across the country, the expansion of a worldclass e-commerce offering, and the implementation of innovation across every department in terms of new technology integration and product selection.

“We are keen to be recognised as leaders in our industry and that means when we don’t get it right, acknowledging that and making it right and better. We are always looking for ways to improve our policies and procedures. We want to be the best in the industry and be an employer of choice, so we attract the right people. the story of artarmon

When National Tiles decided it was time to expand our retail offering in NSW, adding to the stunning Alexandria and Bankstown showrooms, Artarmon provided the ideal location. It is the first store located to the north of the Sydney CBD which is pivotal to National Tiles’ ability to service the northern suburbs and grow our brand awareness. Long term, this awareness will be invaluable as we expand further into the NSW market and grow our brand within the design and construction industries.

It takes a wide and varied team to launch a new store, and there are many individuals within the company as well as the Executive Team who help bring the vision to life. As the National Store Development Manager, John Zubovic was involved in establishing the Artarmon store from concept to completion. Explains John, “The local council application process made this project much more lengthy compared to other projects we have completed. Overall, it took the best part of 12 months from start to finish with the actual site works only taking eight weeks.”

John was responsible for engaging the builders and trades, as well as providing expertise during the interior specification and joinery design processes. He liaised directly with the council, overseeing the execution of works on site before handing over to the retail team. “The fact we had to think outside the square with this site was most rewarding. The showroom is much smaller than what we would generally select but we still managed to deliver an exceptional space with loads of natural light. The curved ceiling and exposed steel beams provide a very architectural feel to the showroom.”

Amy Spasojovic, National Store Design & Visual Merchandising Manager, who was also was involved from the very beginning of the project, visited the site to understand the brief and the scope of works. From there she developed versions of designs that would work with the challenging space. After final approvals she had regular site visits to ensure all of the design needs were being adequately met. Explains Amy, “The site at Artarmon captures a pocket in the Sydney market that appeals to designers and architects as well as renovation clients. The exposure on Pacific Highway is excellent with loads of front of store parking, so it’s an appealing and efficient location for all types of clients.”

Once handover of the project was complete, Amy’s team managed the planogram and signage execution to ensure all products are represented to the brand guidelines. “In the design process we had to cover in some of the windows to allow for more display space, however despite this the natural light in this store is abundant from the high-level windows. This creates a bright and warm space, as well as highlighting the arch in the roof and emphasing the appealing design aesthetic. Customers can enjoy a well thought out store that showcases inspiration and design with expert advice on tiles, flooring, and trade. Whilst the store isn’t large, this makes for a more intimate experience with the team as we all know the process can be overwhelming.”

26 NATIONAL TILES INSIDE STORY

Eden Parker, Marketing & Projects Coordinator, Port Melbourne Head Office, was heavily involved in facilitating the store opening, ordering tiles for showroom displays, ordering sample stock and setting up the sample library, as well as assisting with back of house logistics. “My favourite aspect of the new store,” says Eden, “is that the building was previously a car dealership so the whole showroom frontage is covered in windows that let in an abundance of beautiful natural light. It’s the perfect environment for customers to explore tile colours and I love how bright it is. It makes the space feel so much bigger.”

Ashleigh Broadhurst, State Manager, NSW Retail and Kim Costelloe, Artarmon Store Manager, are directly involved with the store and staff on a daily basis. Explains Ashleigh, “The National Tiles Bankstown store caters to the west, while our Alexandria location serves the city. Our Warners Bay store covers the central coast and our latest addition, situated on the

North Shore, offers a boutique showroom experience with a high level service. No longer do customers have to go through tolls, tunnels or over the bridge – National Tiles Artarmon is the go-to destination in the north. We’ve chosen a convenient spot off the main road, providing ample parking for our customers’ ease and convenience.”

Adds Kim, “The parking and location at our Artarmon showroom are exceptionally convenient for our clients. Complementing the fantastic setup is our dedicated and skilled team, prepared to provide customers with a service second to none. Our displays effectively highlight our products, and we’ve introduced the innovative DesignPro render program, allowing us to present customers with high-quality 3D renders of their projects before they become a reality. This enhanced visualization capability adds an extra layer of value to our service.”

When visiting the new Artarmon store, customers can expect to view a diverse range of options in the stylish showroom, showcasing a multitude of choices in tiles, stone and timber. “We collaborate closely with our builders’ team, and have established connections with builders and architects both in the commercial and residential sectors, which ensures we offer excellent customer service and introduce them to the right contacts within our business,” says Kim.

Adds Ashleigh, “We also offer installation for our timber flooring ranges and a free measure and quote service for this category. Our knowledgeable team is ready to guide and assist so customers will leave with a sense of accomplishment. With our support, customers can confidently make informed tile and flooring choices.”

Trade plays a pivotal role across all National Tiles stores, and at our Artarmon showroom we take pride in introducing a tailored trade offering designed specifically to meet the requirements of our trade customers. “For those in need of larger quantities,” says Ashleigh, “we provide the convenience of arranging larger orders for trade goods that can be effortlessly collected from our closest warehouse or delivered at standard freight costs. This streamlined process ensures efficiency and flexibility, catering to the specific needs of our valued tradies.”

Adds Kim, “As Artarmon serves as a design showroom, we are focused on presenting our extensive tile, stone and flooring collection without stocking items on-site. As a result, we have developed a streamlined process for our customers by enabling order pickups from our Alexandria, Bankstown, and Warners Bay locations. For added convenience, we also provide a delivery option to the specified site, with costs tailored to each job and location. This flexibility ensures that customers can choose the most convenient method for receiving their orders, whether through collection or delivery.”

NATIONAL TILES 31 TALKING DESIGN
BROOKESMITH KAHTEABARKLA

Melissa Bourne

Born in Melbourne, Melissa grew up on the Sunshine Coast and studied fashion design before returning to Melbourne in 2008 to explore a career in fashion. An opportunity to study visual merchandising sounded like a fun challenge, and through the course Melissa quickly secured a role with Myer where she realised that visual merchandising allowed her to explore both her creative and methodical mindset.

A year later Melissa joined Cotton On Group as the visual merchandiser for Factorie where she excelled, working her way up to management over her ten-year tenure, including a three year secondment in New Zealand as the National Visual Merchandising Manager. Upon returning to Australia she was again elevated to the role of National VM Manager for two years before moving on to Cotton On, working with the menswear team.

A shift in mindset and desire for creativity with longevity and versatility led Melissa to further her studies in interior design, and when a visual merchandising opportunity came up at National Tiles she decided it was the ideal time to explore the world of interiors.

After a long conversation with Amy Spasojevic, National Tiles’ National Store Design & Visual Merchandising Manager, Melissa decided to take on the role in late 2022. Explains Melissa, “Amy definitely sold the National Tiles dream, and explained how creative the role would be.” Adds Melissa, “Interior design is a lifelong career and there are tremendous growth opportunities where you can work with retail stores and with builders and architects. National Tiles gave me the chance to combine my love of interiors with my visual merchandising experience, and the opportunity to work in a team environment. I love the energy of collaborations and exploring ideas with like-minded creatives. I love that there is always something new to learn.”

MELISSABOURNE

As a Visual Merchandising Coordinator, Melissa’s role is wide and varied, from planogramming to determining the way the retail stores and trade stores look and feel. “With such a different client base with diverse needs, from homeowners to architects and designers to tilers and builders, ensuring that the stores operate smoothly from a functional and aesthetic perspective is key. I really enjoy the challenge that presents. One of the most rewarding parts of my job though is designing the retail displays for stores. It’s where I get to channel my creativity, developing rooms sets that will stimulate and inspire our customers in the retail space. Putting together on trend looks with tiles, colours and fixtures and fittings allows me to explore my interior design skills whilst putting my VM experience to effective use. To see a design evolve from a concept to being installed on the store floor is incredible. The best part though is hearing the amazing feedback from customers, team members and senior management, when a display has the wow factor you were hoping for.”

New tile collections form the foundation of any new instore display, and the design comes together by blending complementary tiles, fixtures and fittings to create a set that brings the whole scene to life. “I research colours and interior trends to ensure there is a visual significance for our customers and then roll out the stories in store.”

Melissa loves that her role at National Tiles is so varied and that no two days are the same. “One day I’m designing displays, the next day I am working on spreadsheets, and coordinating pod materials and organising deliveries to stores. It’s exciting to be a part of the marketing team. It’s a really supportive environment and it’s inspiring to collaborate with other creatives.”

When designing displays, Melissa finds that the 3D Costa Nova collection is definitely one of her favourites, with the muted tones working beautifully together. And in terms of design trends, Melissa explains, “There’s a lot of surface texture coming to the fore in interiors which is translating well into the tile industry. We’ll see a lot more tiles that are beautiful to the touch and have visual appeal in terms of texture. I follow a lot of architects on social media and find it really inspiring to see the creative elements they bring in to play. I think we’ll see a lot more use of tile cladding for exteriors on architecturally designed homes, which also explores the more textural fabrications.”

passion

for product

In late 2023 a new team was formed to celebrate, investigate and bring insights to the world of product development at National Tiles.

The ‘New Product Development Working Group’ (NPD) was established as a forum for the exchange of ideas, reviews of the market and the assessment of our current ranges so that we can continue to evolve and grow in our pursuit of excellence in terms of what we offer our valued clients in both the residential and architectural and design communities.

Explains Camron Whittaker, Executive General Manager, Global Sourcing, “We gathered business leaders across all of our channels of the company, inviting them to be a part of the decision-making process in regard to the products we source from around the world. This team is now composed of selected individuals who are passionate about what we promote, have a well-rounded commercial view, are exposed to what other players are bringing to market and what specifiers, interior designers, architects and builders are seeking for their projects.”

The team collates feedback from across the business, and importantly from our customers, and these insights form the basis of bimonthly product development meetings. The team will also learn from supplier-lead training sessions where we will invite selected suppliers to present new products for consideration. Adds Camron, “In between these meetings, a What’s App group unites the team so we can share what we are seeing locally and around the world in a quick and timely manner so that we are always connected.

Every National Tiles team member across the business is invited to reach out to the NPD working group with any feedback at any time so that we are capturing as much information as possible, locally and globally.”

We spoke with some of the NPD working group members to get insights into their role, and the importance of keeping focused on development of the National Tiles product offering.

JACQUI BUYN

Architectural Business Development Manager, Commercial Division

As part of my role at National Tiles, I’m at the forefront of commercial projects to ensure that National Tiles is included in all commercial and residential schedules of finishes. It’s an exciting responsibility, making sure our products are considered and selected for various projects. Being involved in these decisions allows us to showcase the quality and versatility of National Tiles.

I’m really passionate about the tile range that National Tiles offers to homeowners and the A&D community because they provide such a wide variety of stylish and high-quality options. These tiles have the power to transform spaces and bring people’s design visions to life. Being able to contribute to creating beautiful and functional environments is incredibly rewarding. From a commercial perspective, it’s crucial to consistently and continually review and revise the National Tiles offering. This ensures that we stay competitive in the market, meet the evolving needs of customers, and stay ahead of industry trends. By regularly evaluating our product range, we can identify areas for improvement, introduce new designs, and maintain customer satisfaction. It’s all about staying relevant and providing the best possible options for our customers.

NICK MURRAY

QLD Commercial Manager

The key aspect of my role at National Tiles is to drive sales and growth in the commercial sector in QLD and Northern NSW. I am so passionate about the tile range that National Tiles offers to homeowners and the A & D community because we are at the forefront of trend setting when launching new ranges. As styles and trends evolve so quickly, it is very important to keep aligning and evolving with these design movements so we meet market needs. ANKITA TANDON

NSW Architectural Rep

Marking a decade at National Tiles in early 2024, I have navigated through diverse roles in retail, trade, warehousing, B2B, and senior leadership, and contributing to training and order support. I am responsible for managing the operations at four sites in New South Wales, where I lead a high-performing sales team in a growing state, and I have recently been involved in opening two new stores in NSW.

I am passionate about our customers and the experiences we provide, which in turn means I am passionate about the products we have and can offer them. National Tiles has a great balance between staying in tune with current trends and maintaining designs that cater to a diverse clientele, this is crucial as we cater to a broad audience. Much like fashion trends, tiles have varying lifespans, some trends are long lasting, others fleeting, and certain styles can resurface after many years or sporadically. Trends in colors, textures, and styles are forever changing and evolving, creating a need for constant review to stay current and fulfill the ever-evolving market demands. Our product ranges are tailored to meet the needs of our customers, making it a rare occurrence for us not to have something that fulfills their requests. Currently, warm tones and textures are very popular in both commercial and residential applications. Collections that effectively blend aesthetics with functionality and cater to practical applications such as homes and commercial spaces, consistently resonate well with customers and will continue to do so in 2024.

SHIREE MEADE

Franchise Owner/Manager, National Tiles Bendigo

In the franchise environment we are involved in everything from sales, staff and customer management, to quoting, and staff development. Representing the franchisees is a big responsibility that I take seriously, knowing there is a diverse range of needs in our local stores and that whilst we have some similar focuses to the company stores, our regional locations necessitate quite specific requirements that need to be considered by the National Tiles team.

Over the last few years National Tiles has done a fantastic job positioning us as the best tile retailer in Australia. It’s critical to stay out in front and be seen by our customers as innovative and providing the best offering. We can be satisfied with what we have but continuing to improve our range is crucial for our future success.

SIMON CEN

Product Development Assistant

Developing and sourcing the best products available in the market for our customers is key. It’s exciting for me to be able to understand what our customers need, and to deliver the very best choices to them. It’s a very satisfying accomplishment. It is always important to ensure that we offer a wide and deep variety of ranges to homeowners and architects, designers and builders, that provide quality, on-trend designs, and competitive pricing to suit any budget. For 2024 trends, there is definitely a movement towards warmer tones and more detailed stone designs, and we are seeing a keen interest in larger formats for floor tiles and 3D elements in decoration.

JESSICA DELACORN

National Manager MDB

Working with our major domestic builder accounts, my role is to facilitate a premium client experience, top tier range and drive internal efficiencies to achieve strong supply partner relationships. With eight years of experience across interior design and builder account managment, I firmly believe our range and product development are where it all starts. We can be such an asset to our builders when we know our range intimately. Working alongside them with a tailored approach ensures both brands align and hit the market with an engaging and targeted offering.

Builders, whether their clientele is custom, volume, forever home, investment, downsizing or a first home buyer, each have different needs and capabilities to consider. My focus is on execution of new ranges onsite, labour considerations and then brand collaboration/promotional opportunities. For 2024, earthy natural textures and tones continue to be a hit. Warmer colours are being featured with confidence in interiors, along with plenty of cross and vein cut travertine and a wide variety of stone.

CANDICE MOLONEY

National Design Centre, Manager B2B.

Managing and developing the design team nationally, my key role is to ensure the team is constantly striving to deliver the best possible customer experiences. I continually work with the team to develop training and processes to ensure we meet the customers’ expectations, and I am an advocate for the design team by representing the team’s viewpoint including their feedback, opinion and suggestions.

As part of the NPD team, I am passionate about ensuring that the tiles within our range meet the expectations and demands of our target audience. As a business National Tiles strives to provide the ultimate customer experience, and to be able to provide this level of service we need to ensure our range aligns with the market expectations. From a commercial perspective, it is critically important to consistently and continually review and revise the National Tiles offering. This is due to the constantly evolving customer preference, design trends and emerging technologies. To stay competitive and relevant, it is essential to have on the ground feedback, so we are able to identify the gaps, explore new opportunities and adjust our offerings to ensure we align with the current market demands.

The company’s commitment to having local offices, teams, and trades for each project fosters a fluid and collaborative process.

“Our office, team, and trades are all local to the sites we build, making it a fluid, collaborative process,” states the Total Fitouts team. This localised approach ensures effective communication and coordination, resulting in a more efficient and streamlined project delivery.

Understanding the Nuances: Interior Design, Project Management, Fitout, and Construction

Total Fitouts sheds light on the nuances of the commercial fitout world, emphasising the multifaceted nature of interior design, project management, fitout, and construction. Interior design involves wearing multiple hats – from spatial planning and incorporating branding to understanding building codes and ensuring inclusivity.

Project management is deemed crucial in ensuring the efficient execution of the design and construction fitout process. From coordinating tile deliveries to quality control, project managers at Total Fitouts are in constant communication with site managers, trades, the design team, and clients.

Fitout and construction, though sometimes used interchangeably, are distinct phases in the commercial sector. Construction lays the foundation and creates the structural framework, while fitout involves detailed finishes to prepare the space for occupation. Together, these phases collaboratively bring a building project from concept to completion.

Embracing Trends: A Shift in Aspirations

In terms of emerging trends, Total Fitouts notes a shift in client aspirations on the Sunshine Coast. While the Mediterranean Coastal style has long reigned, clients now envision a burst of vibrant colour, the elegance of natural stone, rich-toned timber, and a fusion of different hues.

“What differentiates us from other building and construction companies is that we have an in-house design team who can help make clients’ vision come to life and streamline the construction process from start to end.”

The Key to Successful Design: Collaboration and Understanding

When asked about the most critical factor when designing a space, Total Fitouts emphasises the importance of close collaboration with clients. Regardless of the project type –be it a new restaurant, beauty salon, retail store, or office –Total Fitouts believes in integrating its design approach with clients’ business visions and adhering to all necessary codes and council requirements. “This ensures a smooth process for the build and fitout phases, aligning perfectly with the client’s objectives”.

ceramic masters

In the ever-evolving world of interior design and architecture, the choices available to homeowners and designers are as diverse as the preferences that drive them. One trend that has been gaining substantial traction in recent years is the use of large format tiles, with the 1200mm x 1200mm size emerging as a standout choice. These tiles, known for their grandeur, versatility, and ease of maintenance, have become a sought-after option for those looking to make a bold design statement.

The sheer size of these tiles gives them an intrinsic elegance, effortlessly creating a space that evokes a sense of continuity and expansiveness. The larger format reduces the number of visible joins, resulting in a seamless and visually appealing surface that not only adds a touch of luxury but also makes spaces appear more open and inviting.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, large format tiles also offer significant functional benefits. One notable advantage is the reduced number of grout lines. Fewer grout lines mean less maintenance and cleaning, making these tiles an excellent choice for high-traffic areas, especially when using epoxy grout. The larger size also means fewer individual tiles are needed to cover a given area. This not only speeds up the installation process but also reduces the likelihood of uneven surfaces. The result is a sleek and modern look that enhances the overall design of a space.

The increasing desire for large format tiles in the world of interior design is not just a passing trend, it reflects the desire for clean lines, smooth finishes, functionality, and practicality. Whether you’re aiming to create a sophisticated backdrop for your living room, a sleek, low-maintenance kitchen, or seamless indoor/ outdoor connection, large format tiles are a versatile and visually

appealing solution. They are equally impactful for commercial applications, from retail stores to expansive showrooms and from office spaces to high-traffic restaurants. Creating a dramatic architectural and design statement, these large format tiles are inviting and impressive. And don’t be afraid to use large format tiles in small areas, the seamless lines help to create an illusion of space and expansiveness.

National Tiles has four exclusive Italian-made tile collections in stock that offer large format tiles in 600mm x 1200mm and 1200mm x 1200m, with a lifetime guarantee.

Karnis

Inspired by the ‘Breccia’ rocks of the Aegean coastline, the Karnis collection harnesses the inherent characteristics of this sedimentary rock composed of angular fragments of embedded minerals. This matrix of fine-grained materials creates a unique beauty, with contrasting colours and shapes, and a distinct and realistic surface texture.

The visual contrast of the stone-like fragments adds an appealing visual depth and attractive tactile allure. The unique aesthetic characteristics seamlessly blend the roughness of stone material with the refinement of marble. The large format sizes showcase the powerful richness of its matte surface, and the polished finish’s luminosity. This versatility

coastal chic

Introducing terrazzo tiles into coastal home designs may seem like an unconventional idea. However, this unexpected element, known for its chic and contemporary appeal, brings a distinctive twist to a coastalinspired living space’s classic and relaxed ambience and can elevate the aesthetic to new heights.

For this residential project in Geelong, National Tiles’ Microcosmi Granito tile was selected for that very reason.

Terrazzo’s ability to blend tradition with a touch of modernity is what makes it a unique addition to a coastal home. Coastal interiors often lean towards natural materials and textures, but terrazzo introduces a surprising element of sophistication.

In coastal design, sandy tones and ocean-inspired hues are common, but terrazzo tiles offer an unexpected canvas. Terrazzo’s versatility allows for the incorporation of soft pastels or earthy shades that mimic the coastal surroundings. Boasting flecks and flakes of terracotta, cream and white on a grey base, Microcosmi Granito is a granite-and-terrazzo-inspired design that departs from the conventional coastal palette and creates an intriguing juxtaposition, transforming the space into a comfortable and fashion-forward haven.

In essence, choosing to use terrazzo tiles in a coastal home adds an element of surprise, a departure from the expected, and transforms the space into a harmonious blend of coastal charm and contemporary chic. It’s a daring choice that speaks volumes about the homeowner’s willingness to push boundaries while maintaining a keen eye for style and sophistication.

The

trials and tribulations

of

LARA&ANDY

Covid-19

seem like a distant memory to most, however it is undeniable that life has changed significantly for many across every industry. The workfrom-home movement still has a firm grip on many workplaces, and there was also a significant shift in mindsets, work/life balance and career aspirations.

For Lara, who worked in marketing in the fashion industry precovid, and her long time partner Andy who was a horticulturalist, life was never the same once they weren’t able to continue with the careers they had spent years forging. Unable to find work and very deflated, Lara and Andy turned their creative minds to new possibilities. Spending many hours at home, Lara decided she wanted to make tiled plinths for some of her indoor plants, so she and Andy created their own masterpiece which Lara popped on her Instagram feed. The response was swift and surprising, with interest generated far and wide for those keen to have one of Lara and Andy’s creations.

Explains Lara, “It’s really strange. Usually when you embark on a business there’s a strategy and a business plan, but interest spread via social media and word-of-mouth, so much so that we found a joinery designer who helped manufacture the frames for our designs. The initial box shapes developed into side tables then coffee tables and then bookshelves. The relationship that we have now formed with John, our joinery designer, is so valuable. The three of us are now partners in what we have called P0ly Design. We send pieces all over the world, from New York to Singapore, and we’re working on shop fit outs and commercial spaces as well as designs for private clients. This venture has changed all our lives. It’s bizarre, but so much fun.”

DESIGN TALKIN NGISGNIKLAT NGISED T A LKING

P0ly Designs caught the imagination of the public and the design world, simply by creating the right product at the right time, offering the market a bespoke piece and autonomy of design. “We create quality, fun and colourful pieces, and design out-of-the-box ideas that take shape in quadrangles, squares and equilateral sides. Our handmade-to-order furniture celebrates the simplicity of the ceramic tile. We now love working on custom commissions for bespoke architectural, interior design, and commercial fit out projects. If you have an idea, maybe it’s inspired from something you’ve seen on our Instagram or maybe it came to you in dream. Either way, we want to hear about it. We take your idea and make it a (virtual) reality.”

The team has worked closely with National Tiles since their first design, utilising a wide selection of National Tiles product for the tiled creations. “We absolutely love the Urban Atelier mosaic tiles and curved edges – the colours are superb. When our customers see them, their minds are blown. They create such a neat and visually appealing design that is contemporary and nostalgic at the same time.”

This range from National Tiles has been used to create cubes, drawers, chess boards, consoles, bookshelves and coffee tables in a wide variety of colours. “The fun part for us is that customers come to us with their ideas, and we bring them to life. It's such a synergistic relationship we have with our clients, we make everything possible and keep pushing the boundaries of what we create. It’s a beautiful organic business that is sustainable and at one with what the market wants.”

P0ly Designs offers endless possibilities when it comes to colour options, working with Australian steel, timber and Laminex, and of course the much-celebrated tile. You can visit their showroom where you can see the plethora of colours, dimensions, finishes and textures available with 50 grout colour options. Once they have developed a way to manufacture your idea, the size and functionality will determine the price and freight costs. Production usually takes around six weeks, and they are also flexible with payment plans.

“We are constantly evolving our design repertoire and creating bigger and bolder pieces that have a level of complexity. Working with interior designers, architects and shop fitters pushes us to create incredible shapes that combine engineering and design. We have even created some amazing custom pieces for the National Tiles store in Port Melbourne. The coolest thing about working with tiles is that they are so durable, can be used indoors or outdoors and are so easy to clean and maintain. They have been used ancient times, and they are always in fashion, and we love working with them to create beautiful pieces for our ever-growing base of loyal and adventurous clients.”

mt gambier

Located halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne, Mt Gambier offers the vibrant lifestyle of a big city with the comforts of a small town, complete with tradition, modern conveniences, and the natural beauty of the limestone volcanic landscape and crater lakes.

The bustling retail market offers different options for the residential and commercial market, and Melissa and Scott Davies were inspired by local interest to expand their carpet franchise. “After launching our business in 2006 and operating it successfully for a number of years, we found that more and more of our customers were looking to us for design advice for their home beyond carpet. They wanted to learn about different styles and colour schemes, and were keen to renovate their bathrooms, laundries and kitchens as well. As a qualified interior decorator I loved helping customers with design solutions, so it was a natural progression to expand our offering to encompass tiles, vinyl and timber flooring.”

The couple took on the National Tiles franchise in July 2012, making Mt Gambier the first National Tiles store in South Australia. Says Melissa, “We undertook the building of a 630sqm shop and warehouse exclusively for National Tiles which was a substantial investment and a big leap of faith. However through our network we had established strong relationships with other National Tiles franchise owners and they gave us the confidence, knowing how successful their franchise operations were. They are a marvellous group and most have maintained their National Tiles franchises since before we launched, which speaks volumes of the association with National Tiles.”

For Melissa and Scott, the premise behind their operation is not so much about selling product, it’s about helping the local community with their design choices. “It’s so rewarding helping our customers get the look that they want so they create a home they love and feel comfortable living in,” explains Melissa. “For us it’s about helping people achieve their dreams.”

“We have an amazing team who work alongside us, many of whom have been with us since the beginning. They mean the world to us and we couldn’t do it without their dedication and flexibility. We’re not forceful with our offering, we just work closely with our customers, listen to their needs, and provide them with the best product to suit their home and their lifestyle.”

Says Melissa, “Mt Gambier is our home, it’s where are children have grown up and the local community has really supported us in our business enterprise. We have worked really hard to create a trusted business with a core number of local builders, and our retail client base. There’s such a wide variety of styles of homes and a real diversity in the types of tiles that homeowners choose. Our main goal is that our customer’s leave our store with a cohesive look.”

It’s this customer service and their long terms relationships with their client base that has seen the National Tiles franchise store become so successful. “The National Tiles business model is amazing. The head office back-of-house support and service is incredible. The computer programmes are such that the stock levels are transparent which ensures we can be confident in supply volumes and timings for our customers, which in turn means they can really rely on us for their project timeline. They feel confident because we are, and that works for builders as well as our retail customers. The range offers something for everyone, so it’s up to us to listen to our customers and to guide them into making the right selection for their home.”

hervey bay

Hervey Bay is an idyllic coastal city in southern Queensland, just over three hours’ drive from Brisbane. The area is well known as a site for observing humpback whales during the July to November migration season. It’s also a hub for tours to nearby Fraser Island with its beautiful beaches and rainforest habitat for dingoes and other wildlife.

The National Tiles franchise store opened in Hervey Bay in 2015, offering tile and flooring options to the local market. Jeff Covill, General Manager of the store, has been a resident of Hervey Bay since his teenage years. He has seen a lot of changes to the local landscape since arriving in the area, with Hervey Bay growing from a sleepy little town to a bustling hub for tourists, and for those looking to retire to the beautiful coastal area. The seaside haven within close proximity to Brisbane is also a destination of choice for those who love the opportunity to fish the local area and enjoy a boating lifestyle.

the market is very buoyant,” says Jeff. “Builders and homeowners alike tend to select classic tiles. These are the most popular for flooring, splashbacks and wet areas. The vinyl flooring range is also a popular choice. Our renovation clients and our builders generally choose a light and bright coastal palette which suits the local area perfectly.”

The National Tiles franchise store provides a strong and reliable tile source for the local market. Explains Jeff, “We love working with the depth and breadth of the National Tiles range with so

The area is gaining popularity as a retirement haven, and the residential footprint is expanding beyond the central business area with newly developed housing estates. Explains Jeff, “Hervey Bay is a beautiful little town with a small, quiet community of around 60,000 residents that is growing exceptionally quickly. We provide tiles for homeowners through our retail store, however our largest market is for local builders looking for well-priced, great quality tiles with a lifetime guarantee.”

They really enjoy coming into the store to talk with our team about their renovations, whilst our younger customers definitely do a lot of tile research online before coming into the store to confirm their selections. With so much competition in the local area, our customer service is extremely important and we are proud of the reputation we have built over the last eight years. ASC OLI

Travertine tiles, one of the most versatile stone effects, are in vogue as interior designers and homeowners embrace warm beige as the background tone of choice.

National Tiles has captured the mood with Ascoli, a stunning range of crosscut and vein-cut travertine-effect tiles and pavers. Available in three large rectified formats, Ascoli plays an elegant tribute to the world-famous travertine from Ascoli Piceno, an elegant town in the Marché region of central Italy, where white travertine is the dominant building material.

46 NATIONAL TILES PRODUCT FOCUS

The ivory-toned travertine from Ascoli Piceno features subtle, oblique veins and is paler and smoother than most travertines. This unique look is captured in our Ascoli range. Subtly understated, it perfectly complements classic or contemporary decor schemes.

The standard wall and floor tiles, all rectified, are 300x600x10mm and 600x600x10mm. Embracing the vogue for porcelain pavers, 600x600x20mm are also available. These facilitate the delivery of seamless inside-out design schemes that unify houses and gardens, maximising the sense of space.

Authenticity is one of the main attributes of the Ascoli range. With 18 faces in 300x600mm and 24 different faces in 600x600mm, this is a genuinely life-like design in both vein-cut and cross-cut options.

Cross-cut travertine is produced from blocks cut perpendicular to the direction of the vein, resulting in a more muted and uniform appearance. Vein-cut travertine, carved from blocks in the same direction as the vein, has more dramatic and pronounced veining.

A host of minute surface details makes both Ascoli design options all but identical to the natural stone that provided the initial inspiration. State-ofthe-art digital decoration also delivers these designs in neutral, naturally unavailable colours: Bianco, silver, and classic.

Ascoli has all the ease-of-cleaning, wear-resistance, and scratchresistance one would expect from a high-end European porcelain tile with the added bonus of an innovative in-out finish, making it possible to craft uniform spaces from the inside to the outdoors.

For architects, designers and commercial specifiers, National Tiles now offer hard-cover sample folders with a complete sample selection and product information for each range. Get in touch with your sales representative to order now.

vives

The Vives brand was born in 1957 in the province of Castellón in Spain at the gateway to the Alcalatén region. The small town of Alcora has a long artisan tradition in artistic ceramics. Originally named Azulejos Vives, this family business was dedicated to small-format double-fired wall tiles.

Over the years Vives has grown by investing in the latest technological advances, becoming a pioneer in Spain in the manufacturing of single-fired floor tiles. The innovative plant named Ceramica Vives was officially inaugurated in 1975, and by 1986 the company invested in single firing porous tiles. The creation of the Azulejos Vives II plant with a revolutionary technology allowed the production of larger tiles which adapted perfectly to the demands of new export markets. Vives currently offers white-body wall tiles from smaller formats all the way up to large 450 x 1200mm.

With a passion for everything to do with ceramics, Vives also invests in the artisan processes of special decorative pieces. It was for this reason that in 1990, the Arte Y Diseno Ceramico plant was established with the sole purpose of providing added value articles to its different collections. In 1996, the time came to expand the production of floor tiles and the new Ceramic Vives II plant was established. It is here where the Vives journey into the manufacturing porcelain stoneware began. This led to the inauguration of the Ferraes Ceramica plant, a very large porcelain manufacturing facility that houses the latest technology in the sector.

Such technology includes production processes, rectification and polishing of large-format ceramic pieces. Over time, the size of porcelain tiles has increased, reaching formats of 1200 x 1200mm and 800 x 1800mm in 2018. More than half a century dedicated to ceramics and investing in research and development has resulted in what Vives is today – a leading company whose goal is to achieve a product to be proud of.

Explains Rogrigo Vives Monfort, “We have been working hard and responsibly every day for almost seven decades in order to achieve the three basic premises that Vives have set for themselves: good service, great quality and cutting-edge design. This legacy is perfectly shown off in the new 3500sqm Vives showroom that was inaugurated in 2020 in which we show the history of the company and all the products produced by the firm. They are displayed in a pleasant environment where the ceramics are the protagonist in different carefully designed decorative spaces.”

Biodegradable

tile care

These simple steps will help maintain your ceramic and porcelain tiles, tile grout and natural stone flooring: Eliminate grit

Sand or grit can cause premature wearing of hard-surface flooring and damage floors by rubbing and scratching the surface. This can be avoided by following the below steps.

1. Place dust mats by the door, ideally inside and outside.

2. Clean the mats regularly.

Use absorbent paper towels or similar items to absorb as much of the spillage as possible. Let any remaining stains dry, and then wash them lightly with a neutral cleaning detergent such as Mapei UltraCare Multi Cleaner Spray. Never apply a cleaning solution directly onto a spill before wiping off the excess first, as this may drive the contaminant deeper into the surface.

Routine maintenance

3. Clean the floor regularly with a soft brush, vacuum, or dust mop.

Attend to spills as they occur

Even though a seal may protect the floor, liquid contaminant spills should be removed immediately. The longer spills are left to dwell on grout, the more likely they will create a stain. Also, some liquids, such as red wine, fruit juices, coffee, and soft drinks, may be acidic and can etch acid-sensitive surfaces potentially causing a stain.

thermogroup

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Australian homes serve as a sanctuary for starting energized mornings and unwinding after long days.

Imagine enhancing this haven with the ultimate comfort –the welcoming embrace of underfloor heating. Warmth and comfort should be the last thing you think about and the first thing you feel when you enter your home.

Why bring Underfloor Heating into your home?

Consistent Comfort: Unlike conventional heating systems that create uneven hot spots, underfloor heating ensures a uniform and consistent warmth, enveloping the space in comfort without the inefficiency of overheating certain areas. Combined with that, you don’t have to experience cold feet ever again.

Efficiency and Eco-friendliness: Operating at lower temperatures than traditional radiators, underfloor heating spreads warmth evenly across the room, reducing energy consumption and costs.

Health Benefits: This system minimizes the circulation of dust and allergens, a boon for those with respiratory issues.

Space and Design Freedom: Invisible and silent, underfloor heating liberates interior spaces from the clutter of radiators, offering more room for design and decoration. It’s a perfect match for minimalist and contemporary aesthetics.

Property Value: Installing underfloor heating is not only about immediate comfort but also a smart investment, potentially increasing the value of your property.

Use a mild, neutral detergent, such as MAPEI’s UltraCare Multi Cleaner Spray, and a low abrasive cleaning tool, such as a dry cloth, for routine cleaning. Avoid abrasive cleaning materials which may wear the tile and grout. Once per week should be sufficient depending on foot traffic type and frequency of use. Using an off-the-shelf, high-alkaline cleaner should be kept to a minimum and avoid using bleach.

Periodic deep cleaning

Once a year it may be necessary to give the floor and grout joints an intensive deep clean, depending on exposure to dirt. Tiles with a heavily textured surface require more frequent deep cleaning than smooth surfaces. It is best to avoid acidic cleaning chemicals and use an alkaline cleaner, such as Mapei UltraCare HD Cleaner, which will help to remove built-up grease and grime effectively.

Periodic resealing

If the floor grout is sealed, it may require a periodic reapplication of sealer to maintain protection. A stain-resistant protector, such as the Mapei UltraCare grout protector, can be used for joints sealed with cementitious grouts. For long-term resilience and excellent cleanability, using epoxy grouts for grouting ceramic tiles is also advisable.

Visit mapei.com.au for comprehensive technical documentation on the UltraCare range.

Affordability: Contrary to popular belief, Underfloor Heating is very affordable to purchase and run. A typical bathroom kit including the Thermostat costs around $800 and when it comes to running costs, a standard bathroom running for 6 hours a day will cost less than a cup of coffee a week to run.

We have seen the company transition from a family-run business with focus on product to a major tile manufacturer that operates on a global scale with world-class commercial offerings. Paolo Turbati, General Manager at Cerdomus, joined the company in 2017 together with his business partner Claudio Sola, bringing with them 35 years of experience in tile industry.

We also invested in people and technology, seeking out professionals who brought with them not only the necessary skills, but also energy and enthusiasm. These refinements together with the latest investments in technology and our technology partnership with SACMI, have been the key factors contributing to the success of Cerdomus. The company has designed and installed a new production concept that makes it possible for nimble and responsive technical innovation.”

The synergistic relationship between National Tiles and Cerdomus has been based on the meeting of minds and of principles. “The National Tiles team understands the importance of innovation and of integrity, and they, like us, respond swiftly to market needs. Our Sales Manager for Australia, Davide Mucci, works very closely with Camron Whittaker and his team, a bond that started in 2016 with the launch of the Mexicana collection. Step by step we have developed a very close and successful relationship with the release of many very successful ranges. The most recent collections that will be released soon into the Australian market have been developed in partnership with Cerdomus and National Tiles, including the amazing Karnis and Camouflage collections which will launch this year.”

Explains Camron Whittaker, Executive General Manager of Global Sourcing, “We have enjoyed a strong association with Cerdomus for many years. However when Paolo Turbati joined the company, his experience in the tile industry, and his passion for design and investing in leading tile technology escalated the Cerdomus offering exponentially. Our partnership has developed and deepened over time. For a number of years now, National Tiles has been the first international retailer invited to view new collections

when they are still in the development stage, so we can offer input, insights and suggestions that help direct and refine the tile design and subsequent applications. Davide Mucci is an integral part of the working relationship that is in sympatico with National Tiles team members, customer base and strategic goals.”

Cerdomus has now introduced two significant technical advancements that are also driven by design.

SurfacePro

SurfacePro is an innovative tile printing technique perfected by Cerdomus which involves applying various layers to build up the design, colours and textures of a tile. The first layer is a white primer acting as a base where graphics and colour can be rendered. Next comes up to four different CMYK layers where inks are applied, creating infinite colour combinations. Another white layer is added where detail is further defined, followed by a gloss

layer. Finally, a texturing layer is applied, embossing and debossing the tile’s textures. This exceptional technical performance perfects the integration of graphics and textures, turning each product into a unique piece.

Safe Technology

This advanced technology developed by Cerdomus is designed to ensure ceramic tile surfaces are safe to walk on and easy to clean. Their intense and rigorous research into innovative materials and techniques has achieved results that meet the most stringent international slip resistance standards. These non-slip surfaces are soft to the touch, have a high dynamic coefficient of friction and the cleanability and maintenance of the product have been improved without compromising on aesthetic characteristics.

Cerdomus has become a dynamic industrial operation driven by development, growth and international expansion. Their expertise and experience in making porcelain stoneware is second to none, and this combined with the introduction of double pressing, double colour mixing and patented machinery designed to their own specifications increased their differentiation with competitors. Now that they have entered the digital era, their futuristic digital production facility incorporates new high definition machinery into an already ultra-modern production process. A world-first complete polishing line has now been installed – a system designed with leading companies in the sector. Today, Cerdomus is designing the ceramic tiles of tomorrow.

Nestled along the picturesque Portuguese coast lies the enchanting village of Costa Nova, a haven bathed in radiant light and adorned with vibrant coastal homes.

The Costa Nova series captures the essence of this idyllic locale with 15 rich and distinctive colours, two finishes and two different structured decorative designs.

From classic neutrals, Grey, Black, White, and Beige, to seaside shades, Straw, Terra, Aloe, Naval, Yellow, Baby Blue, Banyan, and Glacier, as well as new neutrals, Pink, Tansy Green, Laurel Green, these elegant elongated metro tiles make their mark.

Talking to Ruth Baaco

Growing up in Manila, Ruth travelled between her birthplace on the idyllic island of Palawan and the metropolis of the Philippines’ capital city where she completed her college studies. Ruth is a designer at heart, with a minimalistic edge and a leaning towards black and white tones.

Her degree in multi-media arts gave her a broad understanding of a cross section of disciplines, and she decided to make the move to Melbourne in 2015 to explore further study and career options. Taking on a role as a creative coordinator at National Tiles two years later, Ruth explains, “I had to learn the business, and also learn how I could help the business and apply my skills in the most effective way possible.” Ruth has had the opportunity to explore web design as well, and the detailed structure of website development suits her organised mindset. Now the Senior Creative Manager, Ruth appreciates the opportunity National Tiles offers to explore your potential, stretch your capabilities and take on challenges to learn and grow.

My favourite childhood memory is…

I have two favourite childhood memories. One is spending time with my lolo (grandpa) and lola (grandma). I grew up with them and I remember spending every night watching tv shows with my lolo whilst my lola read her Bible. And the other one was every summer when I visited my siblings in Palawan and my parents always brought us to the beach.

I am passionate about…

Travelling and landscape photography. Seeing the places I travel to and capturing the scenes that I witness are really what I’m passionate about.

On the weekend you will find me…

Exploring markets (South Melbourne or Victoria Market) or grocery shops.

My ideal dinner menu is… Either Carbonara or Rigatoni with pork ragu. I like Italian cuisine.

I am inspired by…

Nature. I like traveling to different places, specifically either the beach or mountains or forest and I find solace there.

One thing most people don’t know about me is…

I used to be afraid of dogs because I had a bad experience with them during my younger years. But I’ve learned to overcome that fear as long as they’re small (like Ccino and Zoee’s size). I still get nervous with big dogs.

My favourite home design style is… Scandinavian style. I like the simplicity and cosiness of it.

The best advice I have been given is… “Go above and beyond in everything you do”.

What I am loving from National Tiles at the moment is… The flexible work environment. It does make it easier to have work-life-balance.

What I love most about working at National Tiles is… There are a lot of opportunities to learn, grow and advance our careers.
