MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT As I look back at the 2017 fiscal year (July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017), I see a year of innovation made possible by you and others in this community. In this annual report, you will find stories of how your generosity leads to success for incredible students. You and others in the community stepped up last year and provided an unprecedented level of support for the Annual Fund, which supports the college’s greatest needs—helping every student, every day. You helped us initiate the renovation of West Hall, where soon you will see innovative learning in action. You celebrated with us as we broke ground at the Dennos Museum Center and built a new residence hall. Our campus and our community continue to thrive thanks to your support. MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR You have made a difference at NMC. Your gifts, throughout the year, are helping students achieve their dreams. Your gifts help NMC take programs to the next level. Your gifts help create inspiring spaces to learn and to gather as a community. As you consider your giving, you may reflect on an inspiring experience at NMC. I often hear from our alumni that “NMC changed my life.” Or, “NMC is where I learned to love learning.” You may have received a scholarship, like Bruce Byl, and want to pay it forward (story on page 16). Maybe you appreciate the vast diversity of programming through NMC Extended Education, the Dennos Museum Center, or WNMC, and enjoy being a part of the community of support surrounding NMC. Maybe your life was changed for the better through education, and you give to create similar opportunities for NMC students around the world (story on page 8). In the pages that follow, you will read the inspiring stories of students and donors who are a part of the thriving NMC family. The Commitment Scholarship Program

COMMITMENT IS

The Commitment Scholarship Program provides mentoring throughout high school and a full tuition scholarship to NMC funded through charitable contributions to the NMC Foundation.

1,500 STUDENTS

$3,000 PER YEAR

This program has served 1,500 students over the past 24 years.

Students from 18 area high schools are inducted into the program.

Commitment students receive an average annual award of $3,000 to cover their tuition and fees.

CHANGING LIVES WITH A VISION AND A PROMISE: NMC’S COMMITMENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Alex Briggs worked hard earning top grades at Elk Rapids Public Schools. She thought she might be the first in her family to attend college. But as she neared high school, she began to worry that she might not be able to pay for tuition and books. That’s when NMC’s Commitment Scholarship Program stepped in. For students like Alex with big college potential but no means of attending, it’s a game changer. A cohort of area students is identified as they enter high school. NMC promises to pay their tuition and fees. The students pledge to work hard on their studies and graduate from high school. Last year, thanks to your support, 100 students were inducted. These students are often the first in their families to attend college. They benefit not only from this NMC scholarship and the mentoring the college provides, but also the security of knowing that college is in the cards for them.

“I was aware that you were doing great things at the college, and when I learned more about the Commitment Program, I knew it would be impactful to give to,” says Nancy Zimmer of the Bregi Family Foundation, who supported students in the program this year by providing scholarship funds. “My dad grew up with nothing, and it was through first getting an education that he was able to do well. Now that legacy continues through supporting students in our area who have had challenging times in their educational journeys,” says Nancy. The Commitment Scholarship Program helped Alex have a clear vision for her future—one that included higher education. This was made possible through the generosity of donors like you. Thank you for giving students like Alex the opportunity to achieve their dreams.

STUDENT VETERAN EXPANDS HORIZONS Nichole Hartley (NMC ’17) joined the Air Force shortly after high school. She wasn’t ready for college and she wanted to do some good in the world. After serving three and a half years in the Air Force, Nichole enrolled at NMC in the Visual Communications program. In Jim Bensley’s World Cultures class, Nichole learned of a study abroad experience planned for Morocco. After being stationed in Korea, she knew how valuable it is to learn about other cultures.

“In Morocco I pushed myself and got out of my comfort zone. I learned how to communicate with people I don’t share a language with.” –Nichole Hartley (NMC ’17)

Nichole wanted to learn first-hand about the people of Morocco and about the religion of Islam. Plus, as part of her World Cultures class, Nichole video-chatted weekly with a student in Morocco. There was a chance she could meet him in person. Nichole’s heart was set on traveling to Morocco, but she wasn’t sure she could afford it. The GI Bill didn’t cover the study abroad opportunity. That’s when Nichole heard about the scholarships provided by your generosity. She applied for and received a Global Opportunities Scholarship. “I was only able to experience Morocco because of the scholarship I received,” says Nichole. Thanks to your generosity, Nichole had a life-changing experience in Morocco. She and her classmates trekked through the Sahara Desert on camels, broke fast during Ramadan, painted a school, cleaned a town square, and stayed with host families. “In Morocco I pushed myself and got out of my comfort zone,” says Nichole. “I learned how to communicate with people I don’t share a language with.” Nichole also got to communicate through video, making daily videos of the group’s activities. And she got to meet the student she talked to during her weekly video-chats. Nichole is overwhelmed by your generosity. “Thank you!” she says. “It was an opportunity to go somewhere that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to go.”

ALUMNI KEITH AND GAIL EVANS CREATE NEW ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP Sweethearts Gail and Keith met even before attending NMC and have now been married for 62 years. Their relationship was a lasting part of their NMC experience, as is their appreciation for the value of NMC. You may know Keith Evans (NMC ’57) as a coach. He played basketball as a student, coached men’s tennis, and served as head coach for the 1960–1966 basketball teams. Both went on to attend MSU after NMC and completed advanced degrees which led them to careers in education as teachers and Keith later in administration. Gail and Keith recall being able to work and pay for college because of NMC’s affordability and they want that for future students as well.

“Most of our children attended NMC, and long before our grandchildren attended we’d made plans to establish an endowed scholarship,” shared Gail. They would like this scholarship to inspire a local student to attend or continue attending NMC and have the same advantages they did with their great start at NMC. The Keith and Gail Evans and Family Scholarship was established this year to assist students who are also contributing to their education in some fashion and will give future students the benefit of a quality NMC education. This is a legacy they have already encouraged in their own family and they are excited to make that difference for others for years to come. 9

NMC Programs and Students Benefit from $1 Million Gift from Biederman Family The Les and Anne Biederman Foundation and Ross and Brenda Biederman recently committed $1 million to programs and scholarships at Northwestern Michigan College.

Please join us in congratulating the 2017 recipients of NMC’s highest honor: Ross and Brenda Biederman. Both NMC alumni, Ross and Brenda Biederman have remained engaged with and supportive of NMC for decades. Like you, they see the critical importance of NMC to the entire community. Together, Ross and Brenda have continued the Biederman family legacy of philanthropy, supporting

NMC personally and through the namesake family foundation for 30 years. Biederman scholarship funds currently support more than two dozen students annually. A gift from the family foundation in 2012 provided critical support for a simulator for the Great Lakes Maritime Academy. Read more about the Biederman’s most recent gift in the story to the right.

You know that NMC is a leader in innovative programming related to freshwater studies and remotely operated underwater vehicles. That’s one reason why the Biederman Foundation chose to make a $500,000 gift, the largest single grant in its history, to support NMC’s Great Lakes Water Studies Institute. and cultivate generations of Great Lakes stewards. “I can’t think of one single thing more important than the health of Grand Traverse Bay to our community,” said Ross Biederman. Additionally, the Biederman Foundation committed $250,000 toward scholarships for accounting, business, nursing, and maritime students. This continues a family tradition of support for NMC students. Ross and Brenda also knew they wanted to make an impact with their personal giving. Like nearly 600 of you who support the NMC Annual Fund, they knew they could make the greatest impact by making an unrestricted gift. As part of the Biederman family’s $1 million commitment, Ross and Brenda gave $250,000 to help meet the college’s greatest needs and realize future opportunities.

KEVIN ELSENHEIMER CLASS OF 1987

Kevin is a native of Traverse City. After he earned his associates degree at NMC, he attended Michigan State University and Wayne State University Law School. Kevin has had an impressive political career during which he had the opportunity to serve our region and the state. Most recently, he was appointed to the 13th Circuit Court bench serving Antrim, Grand Traverse, and Leelanau counties.

Since earning her degree, Wei has returned to her native China, where she works as a consultant and entrepreneur in Beijing. Wei has played a pivotal role in NMC’s efforts to expand international engagement and recruit international students as she has served as a liaison for NMC and the Dennos Museum Center with Chinese educational and art institutions.

“What a tremendous honor. I know that I was very, very well prepared for a career I never expected, frankly, by my time at NMC, because of the preparation I had from wonderful instructors,” Elsenheimer said in remarks at Commencement. “I am truly humbled.”

“I am greatly honored to have received this award,”she said. “I would like to thank NMC for all the guidance provided throughout these years even after graduation. I sincerely wish the best for NMC and I will keep sharing my experiences with China!”

Byl Family Creates Transformational Scholarship Through Gift Planning For many of you, NMC has become part of the family. Bruce Byl exemplifies that feeling. Bruce is a proud NMC alumnus, honored with the 2009 Outstanding Alumni award and named an NMC Fellow in 2015. He is a dedicated volunteer, serving on the Foundation Board and many other committees. Bruce received a scholarship himself while attending NMC and, like you, has always wanted to give back. In 2007, the Byls suffered immeasurably with the loss of their teenage son and brother, Tucker. Since that tragedy, the family has kept Tucker’s memory alive, in part by establishing the Tucker Byl Memorial Scholarship. www.nmc.edu/plannedgiving for more information

Over the past year, Bruce and Mary worked with their advisors and their son, Jeff, to include the NMC Foundation in their estate plans in support of the Tucker Byl Memorial Scholarship. Ultimately, their future gifts will add $2 million to Tucker’s scholarship, creating what will likely be the largest scholarship fund at the college. This family decision, as Bruce says, “will help future students in our region realize their educational dreams and goals at NMC. We view this as a long term investment in our young people, NMC, and our regional economy, and strongly believe this will positively impact many people’s lives for decades to come.”

LETTER FROM FOUNDATION BOARD CHAIR I recall one of my first Foundation Board meetings nearly a decade ago, hearing a thank-you letter from a recent scholarship recipient. She described, in heartfelt prose, the impact that this gift had made in her life, reshaping her future and restoring her hope as she faced financial hardship and difficult circumstances. Since then I have heard similar stories from many others—stories of changed lives and brighter futures, igniting a deep desire in my wife and me to personally contribute to the growing needs of NMC students. Research has consistently shown that a college education is one of the driving forces in building strong citizens. Those with a college degree are more likely to be community-minded, volunteer, participate in public life, and vote. However, the dramatically rising costs of college education are limiting access for so many while creating a mountain of debt for others.

That’s also why my wife, Debbie, and I have joined the many generous donors listed in this Annual Report in giving to NMC. Let’s face it, we are privileged to live in such a beautiful and vibrant region. We are equally privileged to invest in the region’s social and economic future. At NMC, we view ourselves as a catalyst in building a better northern Michigan. We are on the move like never before, driven by possibilities that, nearly a decade ago, compelled a young woman to write a simple letter that inspired me, and many others to make a difference.
