Welcome to Five ways to

Self-improvement is crucial as it motivates people to be the best versions of themselves. So here at Plus Living we’ve gathered five ideas for self improvement concepts, which hopefully will inspire you to start making small changes to deliver tangible outcomes.

1 SET GOALS

Goals are hugely motivational, a key to achievement, and accomplishing them is richly rewarding.

2 TRY SOMETHING NEW

Challenge yourself, push yourself, confront your fears, do that thing you’ve been promising yourself you would, but never have.

3 KEEP LEARNING

It’s the best way to combat stagnation and mental decay.

4 TAKE TIME-OUTS

Take a breather, meditate, and give yourself time to just think.

5 GET ACTIVE

Improve your physical and mental health, exercise, eat and drink healthily, and re-evaluate what is and isn’t working in life. If you want to - talk to someone.

6 | Plusliving+ www.plusliving.co.nz Self-Improvement

the new you self-improve

Lyf4u CEO, personal development coach and published author, Maree McManaway, shares her perspective as to how people can improve themselves with these five ideas.

It’s important for people to set goals in their lives because “it is the unknowing of a future that exacerbates all fears,” Maree says.

Having clear goals can give people comfort regarding what to do next, she adds.

“Goals are what I like to call your inner GPS. In your car, if you do not know where you are going, you turn to your GPS to navigate a pathway that may have otherwise been unseen.

“Your inner GPS are your Great Productive Steps, that you set for yourself to offer you confidence and assurance that you are on the right path.”

Going off of the second self-improvement idea, Maree discusses why it’s beneficial for people to challenge themselves and try something new.

If people don’t set goals, life would be boring, she mentions. What helps people have a sense of direction is breaking old patterns and thoughts, which takes 30-90 days to do.

Resetting is worth it though because, as she says, “You can reset those old ways into new and adventurous goals, to train your brain to train your actions into a new pathway going forward”.

A great way to keep learning is through repetition, she advises.

“What we do daily builds who we are and how we live.”

As it already takes 30-90 days to reprogramme old ways, what people do daily becomes a conscious habit.

“Have you ever purchased a packet of seeds… If you plant this seed, if you nurtured it with daily water and care, within a certain timeframe up shoots this glorious new green growth, expecting to flourish just for you.

“This wonderful happening occurs every day all around the world for so many people. You can start anytime, but I suggest you start today.”

Maree advises people to start by:

PREPARING YOUR MIND - This requires letting go of past limiting beliefs, and resetting new empowering beliefs and habitual memes. If you can do this on your own congratulations; if you notice that "stuck cycle" - seek help.

ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT - Be clear and set your GPS.

PRACTICING AND IMPLEMENTING GOALS EVERY DAY

- The value of goal setting can’t be underestimated.

Another self-improvement idea is ensuring people take breaks as they should make more time for themselves.

“While many are time-poor it’s important to understand what we are doing with our precious time,” Maree says.

She estimates how much time most people would have each week. Everyone has 168 hours in the week, but not everyone uses this time productively, she says.

“The average person sleeps around eight hours per night. The average person works a 40-hour week. We still have a whopping 72 hours free. The average person wastes at least 20 hours per week.

“Many say they don’t have time for family, relationships, exercise, or time to sit under a tree and reflect. Yet they have the time to spend hours watching TV or sitting with electronic devices stuck in their hands.”

Maree thinks people should take a break from looking at their screens at least once or twice weekly.

“And notice the hours appear like magic.”

Allow 30-90 days to learn new things to help break old habits. Take a calendar and write out the public holidays, so there is something to look forward to. Plan to have a break, which doesn’t have to involve an overseas adventure, she says.

“It can be very soul-filling simply to embrace what our beautiful country has to offer. The nine famous walks come to mind. Set a goal to complete one each year.”

The last idea is about how important it is for people to be active and talk to others about their issues.

Staying active is essential as people aren’t meant to stay still, Maree says.

“Be actively involved by having a voice, which is designed to be heard.

“When we share our concerns or speak that burdens our minds, we empower others to do the same.”

Igniting your life

Finding your spark and building self-worth

Having a positive relationship with yourself and high self-esteem means working through ups and downs will be manageable.

Having strategies to help you navigate the tougher times means you will have a healthier approach to life.

Having a strong sense of self-esteem does not mean you are an arrogant person.

Often, Kiwis find themselves in a position of not willing to celebrate their achievements in fear of ‘Tall Poppy Syndrome’.

However, celebrating your personal journey with people you care about is a starting place to finding the sparkle in your life.

Small Steps is a New Zealand organisation with many tools to help manage stress, calm your mind and lift the mood if you’re feeling down. Finding your spark in life and building self-worth doesn’t have to be daunting.

“Self-worth is about seeing yourself as valued or as someone who matters. We all have moments of doubt, but having a strong sense of self-worth means appreciating yourself for who you are, and having the right to ‘just be’,” Small Steps New Zealand (NZ) says.

They say self-worth is linked to confidence through trusting yourself. Believe you have the ability and skills to take on the task in front of you.

“Your confidence levels can change depending on what you’re doing at the time. For example, you’re fine with singing to yourself, but not always to an audience.”

Self-worth is about recognising when you might need space to de-stress or calm down, using tools such as deep breathing.

Youthline New Zealand also have tips for finding your confidence and inner-spark again.

“The way we think about ourselves has a big impact on how we feel about ourselves, what we do in our daily life and how we interact with others.”

They suggest the ‘inner-critic’ voice we hear from time to time can be limiting if we don’t hold this voice accountable.

Tips for finding your inner-spark include remembering all the good things about yourself.

“Keep a list of compliments you get from other people or the nice things people do for you. By keeping a list can help you to notice these things more often,” Youthline says.

8 | Plusliving+ www.plusliving.co.nz Wellbeing
Sometimes life gets challenging. It can be hard to find your motivation or spark to achieve goals.

We all get bogged down by the routine of everyday life, so finding ways to incorporate your hobbies and passion projects into your daily or weekly plan can give you satisfaction needed to be inspired by life again.

“If you are stuck in the old habits of not doing much, start getting back into the activities you really like doing or try a new activity.

“This could be a mix of activities [such as] reading, drawing, writing, listening to music or baking. There are many activities to do with others such as joining a local team or club.”

Another piece of advice is to say ‘yes’ more often. Saying yes when invited to a social occasion, (even when you want to reject the offer from social anxiety), can increase your ability to develop trust within yourself.

“Even if you don’t think it will be fun at first, give it a go and stay openminded. You’ll never know if you don’t try,” Youthline says.

Expanding your social circle to meet new people, is one way to find motivation again. Proving to yourself you have the ability to show up and form connections will help with personal self-esteem too.

Youthline suggests general tips for increasing self-esteem such as setting

goals, keeping a list of achievements, doing something nice for another person, and staying healthy also contributes to the personal growth.

Finding a spark for life is easier some days than others.

Challenging your negative self-talk and doing more of what you love can help you to rediscover your self-esteem spark.

Recognising when your sparkle needs uplifting is the place to start.

Hopefully, by implementing some of the advice about you will be on your way to a season of positive self-esteem.

Being emotionally intelligent is vital to functioning in the world around us every day.

Having skills to regulate yourself, while remaining resilient and professional, is at the core of being a successfully emotionally intelligent person.

Skillset New Zealand is a world-class soft-skills training organisation based in Christchurch. The organisation is founded by expert in human psychology research Ralph Brown.

The benefits of being Mind ov

Not everyone in life needs to be a leader, but approaching situations where you may be required to ‘step-up’ such as in the workplace, requires courage and curiosity.

Ralph has dedicated his career to studying human psychology. Since the early 2000s he has published six books and two academic journals from his studies on human resilience.

Ralph turns peer-reviewed research into simple, practical ideas and methods, which help people to be more effective at work and at home.

He has a particular interest in positive human psychology and what emotionally intelligent people do to succeed at this skill.

He says the concept of emotional intelligence is a collection of ideas, often based on how motivated and resilient a person is. In the workplace environment, emotional intelligence may be considered the overall wellbeing performance of an employee.

“Being comfortable with other people’s emotions and maintaining professionalism in a workplace is a sign of someone with effective emotional intelligence,” Ralph says.

“Understanding you are bigger than your [potential] mistakes and choosing to be courageous, such as contributing during a meeting or pitching an idea in a work environment, shows someone who is confident within themselves.”

However, being emotionally intelligent is about more than having a strong sense of confidence in your abilities.

Remaining resilient whilst receiving feedback is an indicator of someone who can remain integral, while accepting criticism to improve oneself.

Ralph says an example of this may be if a situation doesn’t go as planned, an emotionally intelligent person will see this as an opportunity to change or improve, rather than a criticism of their personality.

emotionally intelligent er matter

He says there is often a misunderstanding about emotional intelligence, “Toxic optimism is where people often believe they need to be positive at all times.

“Martin Seligman’s positive psychology research shows that people who are genuinely optimistic can feel down and also be resilient.

“The notion that being optimistic all the time is achievable is unhealthy. People who are true successful optimists are people who can set goals and achieve them through [strong] planning.”

Productive pessimism is a term Ralph uses to describe thinking and planning for working towards goals where aspects could ‘go wrong’.

“Strategy and resilience when planning to meet targets, deadlines or goals in life, means a person is resistant. Be specific when planning for things to go wrong when working towards a goal.”

Strategy and resilience when planning to meet targets, deadlines or goals in life, means a person is resistant. Be specific when planning for things to go wrong when working towards a goal.

Being emotionally intelligent means you will approach life with a balanced mindset and are unbothered by the emotions of others.

“Having a growth mindset where you are open to change, rather than a fixed mindset, is something you can develop with time,” Ralph says.

Setbacks and challenges throughout life are normal. How we approach change will determine our reactions, positivity and overall wellbeing in life.

Being self-aware, having self-management and social awareness helps us to maintain relationships, as well as developing them to retain these friendships.

It is inevitable conflict will arise. Meeting conflict with empathy and kindness where necessary means other people will be inclined to match your behaviour.

Being an emotionally intelligent person does not mean being ‘perfect’ in your reactions at all times. Approaching situations with compassion means you will become the best emotionally intelligent version of yourself.

Retaining an open-mindset and having strategies in place to self-reflect on your emotions is the start to becoming a highly successful emotionally intelligent person.

Ralph Brown is celebrating his retirement from Skillset after 38 years of being with the business in late March. We would like to thank Ralph for his contributions to this story and his dedication to studying human behaviour.

Wellness retreats to revitalise your soul

So here are some of the best wellness retreats to visit in Aotearoa.

Part one

Sanctuary Hill Retreat

Shawna Holder an interior designer who was a recent guest discusses what makes the yoga and wellness retreat different from the rest in New Zealand.

Firstly, Sanctuary Hill Retreat is regarded as a little haven in Taranaki due to the beautiful views of the mountain, making the area a special place, Shawna says.

“We have created Sanctuary Hill as our home, where you can feel the nurturing homely environment, nestled in nature. We cater to small groups which makes our retreats more intimate and specially catered to our guests needs.

“We offer specially prepared meals completely plant based, gluten, dairy, and sugar free. Our approach is to offer a balanced programme that provides rest and reset to those who visit us.”

In terms of why people should come and visit the retreat, Shawna mentions if people are looking to understand and embrace the importance of wellbeing, then they are in the right place because the retreat offers a balanced programme with a healthy diet, rest, movement, awareness, and meditation.

“Sometimes people end up feeling overwhelmed of where to start or how to apply these principles in their lives, so easy and practical steps are the most effectives ones to provide a solid foundation to your journey.

“Our space is free from distractions; we invite our guests to reduce their connection to the external world so they take this time for self-reflection and cultivate inner inspiration.”

Shawna’s favourite thing about Sanctuary Hill Retreat is it is a well thought out and exceptional retreat. Everyone enjoys the food and feels at ease.

“I often pay attention to details and was very impressed. I have been facing with injuries and tough mental challenges, so I didn’t expect much for a weekend because I was had been pretty low – this is the best I have felt in a long time and I’m feeling grateful to be feeling better and now more in control. What a lovely gift to share with others.”

Treetops Lodge and Estate

Treetops Lodge and Estate is an award-winning and sustainably-friendly estate based in a 2,500 acres and 800-year-old native forest.

The wildlife sanctuary and relaxing retreat has a lot of nature, outdoor activities, seven streams, four lakes, and over 69 miles of adventure trails, Treetops Lodge and Estate’s marketing person Karine Thomas says.

It’s unique because it uses high-quality Manuka honey, which is used in skin treatments and indigenous Māori healing treatments that are natural, locally sourced and provides physical and spiritual cleansing.

There’s also 100% pesticide estate sourced Manuka honey scrub containing vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and mirimiri massage and romiromi massage, which are two holistic styles of massages that are ancient and sacred taonga.

The retreat is a beautiful place to visit and guests are attracted to it being New Zealand’s leader in offering real “cultural and wildlife experiences with sensitivity to sustainability, environmental responsibility, indigenous, and cultural,” Karine says.

Guests are able to explore and discover the beauty of New Zealand flora and birds, she says. The company employs experienced local guides from many local iwi (Māori tribes).

The retreat also encourages the guests to learn and taste the beautifully executed dishes from professional chefs every morning to experience Treetops ‘Estate to Plate’ philosophy.

The retreat also includes ingredients reared or grown on the estate that are nearly 100 percent pesticide free. Guests can also help themselves to national and international wine accompanied by expert advice on creating their prime regional wine offerings.

Karines’ favourite thing about Treetops Lodge and Estate is its commitment to conversation:

• Over 10,000 trees have been planted in the estate in the past decade

• They purchase locally made and indigenous and organic food

• Electricity is supplied mostly from the national Hydro Electric Power network national

• Water is supplied for guest consumption by a deep natural spring

• Refuge from the lodge and estate is recycled and regular monitoring is conducted monthly

• Reducing the numbers that prey on our indigenous species

• An annual eco-audit.

“We review our performance to determine gaps in the ecosystem and develop an eco-management plan most likely to benefit indigenous wildlife, and more!”

The retreat is located 20 minutes from Rotorua and offers activities like, “Junior cooking classes, four-wheel drive safaris, helicopter tours to live volcanoes and hot water lakes, Māori poi making and flax weaving, as well as mountain biking, hiking to waterfalls and swimming”.

Why everyone should try Pilates Active resistance

Pilates is a form of exercise that has many health benefits.

Movementor Pilates owner/director, Abbey Parsons, discusses how Pilates came about and when it was introduced in Aotearoa.

Pilates is named after Joseph Pilates, she says.

“Sadly, he died too young and before he could see the global spread of his method. In New Zealand, the early 1990s saw the opening of the first Pilates studio in Auckland, by a mentor of mine, Maree Seerden.”

Pilates was often connected with dancers and performers but in the last 10 years, Pilates has become accessible to the New Zealand public. In the last 15 years, Abbey has run her business and seen how much more popular Pilates has become.

“More recently there has been a rise of Reformer Pilates, which often are fitness-based classes at a higher pace and intensity and made popular by celebrities. I tend to have a more individualised approach and tailor each session to the needs of the client or group I am teaching.”

Joseph said Pilates is the complete coordination of body, mind and spirit, Abbey says. “Pilates movements and exercises are performed with control and precision, which takes mental awareness and patience. When you are doing Pilates movements you are focused on the task at hand and there is no room for thinking about the bills or the ills.”

Abbey encourages her clients to focus on the sensations in their bodies. They learn how to move safely and more about their body.

“Physically the benefits that come from moving, stretching, pushing, pulling, and balancing are numerous.”

Everyone should give Pilates a go because doing new things is healthy and fun. New experiences release dopamine, which is a feel-good hormone, she says.

On Pointe Studio is a Christchurch-based Pilates studio co-owned by Lyndal Woodham and Katrina Buchanan.

They believe everyone should try Pilates because it’s great for strengthening and toning the body, and helps build strength in the core and spine alignment, whilst highlighting having slow, controlled breathing to support the nervous system.

“Which is vital in this busy world we live in. So, it really is a workout for the body and the mind,” Lyndal says.

They believe Pilates can benefit everyone.

“There is a misconception that Pilates is for older women, that it is an easy, more relaxed form of exercise when in reality everyone can benefit hugely from Pilates, and with an experienced instructor, it is anything but easy,” Lyndal says.

“Low impact and a focus on strengthening and engaging the entire core, Pilates provides protection to the spine, lower back in particular, which is a common body area that gets overloaded and injured,” Katrina says.

“Just remember no two studios are the same and it’s okay to question which is the right place for you. Some are more gym-based classes and others more traditional.”

The good oil on gut health

Living a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle and considering the effects of foods you consume, means overall you may feel happier and your gut will function positively with ease.

The Holistic Naturopath is a small business based in Auckland, owned by Christabel Ritson. Christabel has a Bachelor’s degree in Naturopathy and Herbal Medicine, as well as a Diploma in Clinical Nutrition. She has also completed courses and further study in Reiki, yoga, health, and wellbeing.

Christabel says, “Our gut lining and microbiome, although robust, are impacted by what we consume over time. Our gut lining, which is the site for nutrient absorption into the bloodstream, can be weakened by gluten, sugar, alcohol, stress, inflammation, chemicals, and pesticides.”

She says our gut microbiome needs to be kept alive with ‘pre-biotics’, such as the fibre within vegetables, wholegrains and fruits. “Focusing on a strong gut lining and healthy bacteria will help us absorb vitamins and minerals, which in turn support our physical, mental and emotional health.”

She says there is now research which suggests poor gut health has a direct impact on our health, and wellbeing.

Eating a wide variety of foods, such as purchasing something different every time you food shop and eating a range of colourful vegetables, means more nutrients for your brain, body and gut bacteria.

“Eat spray free or organic foods as much as possible,” Christabel says.

She suggests growing your own food, trading with neighbours or purchasing food at a local farmers market as ways to implement this into your routine.

“Try to reduce or remove processed foods, gluten and alcohol. We’re not striving for complete abstinence here,” she jokes. “We want to be realistic and [also] want these foods to be a small percentage of the time, with the rest being highly nutritious.”

Eating and drinking probiotics is easy to get ‘into your system’ with foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh, miso, kefir, and kombucha.

“These [foods] are full of healthy bacteria for your microbiome. You can find them at health stores, your local supermarket or make your own at home for a cheaper version!”

Considering if your gut is giving you ‘grief’ is one way to establish if you need more goodness in your diet.

“Try drinking some herbal tea to relax the digestive tract such as chamomile, peppermint, ginger, or lemon balm,” Christabel says.

Of course, if you are taking any medications or have a diagnosed condition, check with a professional herbalist or doctor before taking high doses of the herbs mentioned above.

The powerful

goodness of fruit

The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research principal scientist and leader of the Food and Health Information Team, Dr Carolyn Lister, says there’s no one amazing super food.

The key is to have a good variety. Carolyn says different fruits and foods contribute different things. Each fruit has a unique composition of nutrients and phytochemicals.

Nutrients are what the body absolutely needs to survive. Phytochemicals, on the other hand, are things that have health benefits but we don’t absolutely need them to survive.

Carolyn says some phytochemicals have only been uncovered recently, so we don’t know as much about them but they improve quality of life. For example, there’s evidence that blueberries help brain health.

“With aging and cognitive ability, anything that helps the brain function is good,” says Carolyn. “Blackcurrants and other berry fruit are often high in vitamin C and important for immunity. As people age, their normal ability for the body to function does decrease, so it pays to top-up immunity.”

Kiwifruit, Carolyn says, has benefits for digestive health. “As people age, their ability to digest foods does drop down. There are some thoughts around kiwifruit having real benefits for things like digesting meat. We haven’t got all the evidence yet but there’s pointers kiwifruit helps.”

The team at Plant and Food have shown fruits like blackcurrants can assist the process of muscle repair and recovery in athletes. This may also be important as people age and their bodies take longer to recover from exercise.

Not only this, but fruits can aid in bone and joint health. Carolyn says people often only think of calcium in milk and other dairy products when referring to bone health. However, some fruits can provide important nutrients other than just calcium.

“Plums and prunes can be valuable in terms of bone health while there’s some evidence for citrus benefiting joint health. For example, vitamin C is important for cartilage formation,” explains Carolyn.

She says quite a lot of issues with aging are also around inflammation, such as arthritis. Some phytochemical like anthocyanins, which give fruits their red, purple and blue colours, may be beneficial in managing inflammation.

“It’s important to have those really colourful fruits – the darker the better. If you’re going to have cherries, have darker cherries. There’s more punch in darker fruit,” she says.

Diet
Fruit has always been known to be a vital part of our diets and, despite the “superfood” term being a marketing scheme, fruit is pretty super.

Another thing people often forget is that the skins of fruit often contain their greatest nutritional value. “For example, there’s a lot of fibre in the skin of an apple so eating the skin, within reason, is a good idea. Go for things while they’re fresh. Some nutrients tend to decline as the fruit ages.”

It’s vital to have a wide range of fruits. Carolyn says they’re all important in their own way. “You’re better off having a good mix.”

Making a meal of it Loving leftovers

Leftovers are great but, sometimes, you don’t want to eat the same meal the next day. Sometimes, your leftovers need a bit more flair to make them delicious. Here are three recipes to give your leftovers a new lease on life.

Method

1. Bring a wok or large pan to a high heat with the oil.

Serves 2-3

Leftover rice can seem a bit annoying but egg fried rice is absolutely tasty and using leftover rice actually makes this recipe better! It’s super simple too and only takes about 20 minutes to make.

Ingredients

• 1 Tbsp vegetable oil

• 2 garlic cloves (minced)

• 2 cups cooked rice

• 3 eggs (beaten)

• 2 Tbsp oyster sauce

• 2 Tbsp soy sauce

• 1 tsp sesame oil

• ½ cup frozen vegetables

• 15g butter.

Egg Fried Rice Chicken Salad

For those pesky bits of leftover roast chicken.

Consider tossing them into a tasty salad that’s both healthy and delicious. It takes about 15 minutes to put together and you can put as much or as little in depending on how many people you’re feeding.

2. Once heated, add the rice and garlic, then stir fry for four to five minutes.

3. Push the rice to the side of the wok or pan and pour the beaten egg into the empty side.

4. Stir to scramble and then stir the egg through the rice.

5. Pour the oyster sauce, soy sauce and sesame oil into the rice and stir to combine.

6. Fold through the frozen vegetables and cook for three to four minutes.

7. Add the butter, stir until melted and then serve.

Ingredients

• Cooked chicken (no bones)

• Carrots

• Lettuce

• Capsicum

Method

• Tomato

• Red onion (finely chopped)

• Mayonnaise

• Lemon juice.

1. Pop your chicken and vegetables into a big bowl.

2. In a separate bowl, mix the mayonnaise and lemon juice together.

3. Add the dressing to the big bowl and mix well.

“Go through all areas of where you spend money and see if you are still getting the best deal on your insurance, power, internet and home utilities. Ask yourself if you are still using that monthly gym membership.”

Charlotte suggests each time you spend money, write it down and minus it from what’s in your bank account.

“Cashflow can help keep you on track and highlight areas where you can cut back on if needed. Luxuries such as coffees and television subscriptions add up.”

Speaking with a financial mentor is another strategy to be well on your way to financial wellbeing. “It’s free and confidential, plus we won’t tell you what decision to make. We can give you options around your own situation and will support you with whatever you decide.”

Charlotte makes a point to mention there are very few people she has worked with who do not have options.

“Most people can work towards creating a life of financial wellbeing with steps in place.”

If you are preparing for retirement, financial stability may appear daunting. “It helps not to overthink it, as long as you are doing all you can now, that’s all you can do,” Charlotte says.

“Many people in their 40s and upwards live by themselves – often due to relationship breakdowns.”

There is the option to have a border to share costs with you is one way to help if you may be in this situation.

“This can be temporary, just to give a bit of a boost to the income. It will

also be helping someone else out – giving them a safe place for a while and you never know where this can lead!

“I have had clients in a situation who are now best friends, another who are now married and a border who has now employed their ‘landlord’,” she says.

Not all points made in this story may be possible for everyone. However, having hope that you can have a positive relationship one day with finances is possible.

Digital dilemmas Choosing the right device

Buying a new device or piece of technology can be a daunting task when you consider how many options there are.

First, you need to figure out what kind of device you want; a tablet, laptop or PC? Then you need to figure out what brand and who to buy from. In order to suss this out, it’s good to know what you want your device for.

PROS AND CONS OF TABLETS.

Harvey Norman’s wearables, tablets, Apple product and marketing manager, Scott Hitchens, explains the pros and cons of tablets.

PROS

• Light and portable

• More cost effective than a laptop

• eBook functionality

• Ideal device for travel.

CONS

• Keyboard and mouse sold separately

• Can be fragile

• Multitasking can be harder than using a laptop

• Tablets offer limited functionality compared to a laptop.

LAPTOPS AND PCS COMPARED TO TABLETS

Meanwhile, Harvey Norman’s hardware, gaming, software product and marketing manager, Morne Jacobs, explains the pros and cons of laptops and PCs compared to tablets.

PROS

• Performance capability that can outperform most other devices

• Bigger screen size and high resolution at affordable prices

• Quality audio due to bigger real estate for speakers

• High storage capacity that can be increased if needed

• High megapixel webcams with smart AI features to improve call quality.

CONS

• Size – much bigger than mobiles and tablets in most cases

• Battery life in the lower spec range is not ideal

• Weight – laptops are heavier than tablets due to performance, specs and screen size

• Thin and light laptops come at a premium price point

• Lack of LTE connectivity vs mobile and tablet products.

34 | Plusliving+ www.plusliving.co.nz Technology

Scott says when looking at buying a tablet, you should look for screen size and whether that fits your needs, how much storage it has, You should also check if it has a camera, the quality of that and how it connects to the internet – is if WIFI or cellular?

He says there are some things to be wary of, too.

“Buy the right operating system – if you have an iPhone currently, then an iPad may be the best choice for you for ecosystem functionality.

“If you think you will need more storage in the future, consider buying a device with more base storage or a device that can take an SD card,” Scott explains.

When purchasing a laptop, Morne says people should look for the generation of the CPU. “Intell 11th Gen and up and AMD 6000 Series and up should be the bare minimum,” he says.

“Also, the battery life should have a minimum of six hours for entry devices.”

He says full HD should be the benchmark for screen resolution with 2k and 4k options readily available.

Morne says to avoid grey imported products as these products will not have a local warranty and is exceptionally risky.

“They will be cheaper but the cost to get them repaired will outweigh the saving.”

Scott says although refurbished items can come at a cheaper price point, they have a risk of coming with a used battery which means it could hold less charge.

Morne explains that the challenge when buying refurbished items is that those purchased from a reputable dealer, are a great option. However, not all dealers are reputable and their warranties have a lot of fine print that voids them from any responsibility.

A great place to start when buying a new device is going into a store. This way, you get to try out various models and get top quality advice from the experts. Scott says you should use online research to find different features, benefits, prices and brands.

Morne says heading in store means you get a better idea of the product you’re buying. He says it allows you to pick up the products and get a true feel for what they have to offer.

Aidan has been involved in the building industry within the South Canterbury area for approximately 20 years and has been the foreman for a reputable building company in Timaru prior to starting Foster Building. He’s a qualified builder with advanced trade certificates, a Licensed Building Practitioner with both a site licence and carpentry license.

Foster Building offer a wide range of builder’s services to South Canterbury. From concrete work to interior finishing, the site staff are highly experienced. They work with residential and commercial, alterations and extensions, kitchens and bathrooms, architectural homes, LBP certified work, insurance work, project management, landscaping and much more. New homes are a specialty and during the last 20 years, Aidan has worked hard to establish his reputation as a professional and highly competent builder.

The team is built on quality from South Canterbury to North Otago, servicing areas such as Timaru, Twizel, Tekapo, Oamaru and more. Foster Building doesn’t just work 9-5 either – if after five suits you, it suits them. The team pride themselves on being easy to contact, day or night and want to make sure clients rest easy while Foster Building gets on with the job.

Foster Building are proud to have Formance panels on board because they know that if there’s one fundamental decision a client needs to get right, it’s the fabric for the envelope of the house. Formance panels provide significant improvements in all areas of the building envelope – structural, weather-tightness, thermal and visual – compared to traditional construction methods. Not only this, but Formance panels encourage reduced energy use and high levels of comfort.

Kawhia Beach

This beach is a great place to go for that Hot Water Beach experience without the crowds. Hidden near the small coastal town of Kawhia of the North Island, this beach has its own warm waters beneath the sands. Grab a shovel and get digging to reach the Te Puia Hot Spring bubbles. The DIY spa baths are best experienced two hours either side of low tide.

Curio Bay’s Petrified Forest

For a unique beach experience, take a walk through history at Curio Bay. There’s a distinct lack of sand and normal beach feelings but it’s epic nonetheless. Here lie tree fossils that are approximately 170 million years old and best seen at low tide. Nestled in the Catlins area, the petrified forest is also home to yellow-eyed penguins.

New Chums Beach

Truly off the beaten track, this beach is only accessible by boat or a 30 minute walk on a partly unformed path. With native bush reaching all the way down to golden sand dunes and stunning ocean views, this is a site worth seeing. This protected stretch of untouched land has no buildings, roads, infrastructure or camping. Fiercely protected by the locals, New Chums Beach is a hidden gem.

Anapai Bay

Although the Abel Tasman attracts thousands of visitors a year, Anapai Bay remains somewhat undiscovered. A three hour return walk from Totaranui and surrounded by mahoe and kanuka shrubs, this glorious, golden beach featuring awesome rock formations is simply magnificent. Anapai Bay feels rather like a private slice of paradise, especially in the summer when everything is bathed in warm sunshine.

Titirangi Beach (Marlborough Sounds)

One of the most northern points of the South Island, this spectacularly isolated beach is a true Marlborough treat. Surrounded by golden hills and clear, blue water, Titirangi Beach is a real beauty. The road leading to this beach is rather windy and tricky but it’s still well worth the drive.

Note: Image is a generic shot in the Marlborough Sounds.

Mason Bay

Getting here is a real trek but if you want to hit a really isolated beach, head to Stewart Island. Featuring sandy dunes and rough grasses, Mason Bay is a real wilderness attraction. This beach also takes plane landings and is home to the highest population base of kiwi in the world.

Monro Beach

The West Coast has an amazing collection of windswept beaches and Monro Beach is one of them. Access is an easy one hour and 20-minute return walk through coastal forest. In the springtime, beachgoers may even spot the Fiordland Crested Penguin crossing the beach to their nesting sites. Gaze upon the crashing waves of the unstoppable Tasman Sea and then turn to see the wind beaten forest bending into the mountains.

Waimamaku Beach

The Waimamaku River meets the Tasman Sea next to a magnificent stretch of sand and rock. A fantastic location to view an absolutely spectacular sunset, this North Island gem has plenty of walking opportunities. Walk along this wide, open and often empty beach whilst taking in the rocky headlands decorating the rugged coastline.

Note: Image is a generic shot of a Northland beach.

Can I use my SuperGold Card to travel free on public transport?

Yes. Most areas off-peak is usually 9am to 3pm and from 6.30pm to the end of service on weekdays, and any time on weekends and public holidays. In most areas you will also need a smart card from the Regional Council to access free off-peak travel.

How do I order a replacement card?

If your SuperGold Card is lost, stolen, damaged or if you change your name, call or email us to order a replacement card. You will need to let us know your full name, date of birth, current residential and postal address and SuperGold Card client number if you have one (found on the back of your SuperGold Card). You should receive a replacement card within three weeks – free of charge.

When will I receive my SuperGold Card?

You will be automatically issued a SuperGold Card when you’re granted New Zealand Superannuation or a Veteran’s Pension or a main benefit at age 65 or over.

Your New Zealand Superannuation will need to be approved at least three weeks before turning age 65 if you wish to receive your SuperGold Card by your 65th birthday.

Is SuperGold connected to my New Zealand Superannuation?

Once your New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran’s Pension has been granted, the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) will automatically send your SuperGold Card in the mail.

If you do not receive or are not eligible to receive New Zealand Superannuation, you can still apply for a SuperGold Card.

What if I am already receiving a main benefit?

If you are turning 65 and receiving a main benefit from the Ministry of Social Development, your SuperGold Card will arrive at least three weeks after you are granted New Zealand Superannuation on your 65th birthday.

If you are not applying for New Zealand Superannuation then you will need to call or email us to advise you have turned 65 so the MSD can send you a new SuperGold Card.

How does the Community Services Card work with SuperGold?

If you have a current Community Services Card at the time you are granted New Zealand Superannuation, and you may continue to qualify for a Community Services Card, you will need to complete a Community Services Card application form to get a new SuperGold/Community Services Combo Card. It will have the initials CSC on the back and an expiry date.

Your new combo card’ replaces your Community Services Card. You can use this card for both health subsidies and SuperGold discounts.

Does my SuperGold Card have an expiry date?

Since May 2010, the only SuperGold cards with an expiry date are those which double as both a Community Services Card and SuperGold Card. These ‘combo cards’ have an expiry date because entitlement to a Community Services Card can change over time.

If the back of your card includes an expiry date (EXP) and this date has expired, call 0800 25 45 65 or email information@ supergold.govt.nz to arrange a replacement card.

Can I still get SuperGold if I am not a resident?

If you are not normally a resident in New Zealand and do not intend to stay here, you will not qualify to receive a SuperGold Card.

Helpful hobbies

Taking up a new hobby is a great way to take some time for yourself and, depending on the hobby, can benefit your mental health, physical health and much more.

Check out other websites like Trip Advisor or Eventfinda for more classes in your area.

ONLINE PAINTING

When it comes to finding the new thing to make you smile, there are a few factors to take into consideration.

• Cost

• Physical ability

• Socialisation

• Location and travel

• Mental ability

• Time.

Within these factors, you have to be prepared to compromise. For example, a hobby that costs nothing is to start walking and finding new and interesting places to walk. However, that requires a certain level of physical ability and potentially travel.

Another example is something like crochet or knitting. This requires a certain amount of money but is a less physical activity. It all depends on what you need/want a hobby to achieve for you.

Community classes are a great way to get started – you can learn the basics or get involved with a group of people with similar interests. You can also figure out what suits you best. Really, the secret to finding your new hobby is trial and error.

You might think you’d really enjoying pottery but once you get started, you realise it’s not for you. So, try new things. Get out there and keep trying until you find your new calling.

Make sure you

recycle right

Here are some handy recycling tips:

Empty, Clean and Loose

All containers need to be empty, clean and loose in the bin (not bagged). All lids must be put in the rubbish.

Look for the Triangle

Plastic bottles and containers have a plastic code, usually on the bottom inside a triangle. This code tells us the type of plastic it is and whether or not it can be recycled. We can only accept plastic types 1, 2 and 5.

Paper and Cardboard

Paper and cardboard needs to be flat not crumpled up and must be clean with no food or food-staining. We can accept clean and empty pizza boxes in the recycling. Those with oil or food on the cardboard can go in your organics bin, worm farm or compost, otherwise put them in the rubbish.

Coffee Cups are a No-No

Take-away coffee cups and lids cannot be recycled.

Size Does Matter

We can’t take any paper smaller than a standard envelope, lids from any containers, or plastic containers smaller than a yoghurt pottle. We also can’t take containers that are larger than 3 litres.

Clothing or bedding, appliances or tools, toys, polystyrene, machine parts, soft plastics, and more…

None of these can be processed so don’t put them in your recycling bin. If you have any reusable items, drop them off to a charity or our Southbrook resource recovery park. Mobile phones, scrap metal, whiteware and clean polystyrene packaging can also be dropped off for free at Southbrook. Soft plastics can be taken to a shop with Soft Plastics Recycling.

Rubbish is Rubbish!

Rubbish, including nappies, plastic strapping, food scraps must go in the rubbish bin.

We can’t accept:

Plastics numbered 3, 4, 6 & 7

No containers larger than 3L or smaller than 150ml

To ensure your bin gets emptied and to avoid contamination of recycling:

Keep items loose

Don’t squash bottles, tins or cans

Put all lids in the rubbish

Make sure everything is clean

Repeated contamination may result in withdrawal of your kerbside collection service.

Soft plastics or any plastic you can scrunch into a ball

Takeaway cups and liquid cartons

Paper smaller than an envelope

Compostable items

Clothes and toys

Nappies

Polystyrene

Pans and foils

Window glass, crockery & light bulbs

Batteries

General rubbish or food.

The company is a member of Registered Master Builders and was established by Jeffrey Dennison in 2016.

“Palmerston has been our base for the business, but we are expanding into the wider Otago region. We employ staff in surrounding towns and cities,” Jeff says.

The company specialises in the construction and renovation of residential and commercial projects and its client testimonies point to the high standard of work and project management provided.

As a smaller business, JDBuilders is “very flexible” in dealing with client requirements without the corporate overhead of larger companies.

“We have the skills and experience necessary to address any technically challenging aspects of a project, combined with the attention to detail and high level of interior finishes required on residential and commercial fit-out projects. To us, every construction project is unique, we build with passion.”

A team is created for each new project, which includes JDBuilders, the clients consultants, supply chains, and authorities to ensure the best outcome.

The business has experienced consistent growth since it was established, with word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied clients being a common way of gaining new business.

The company has developed a range of pre-designed new home plans that are great for inspiration and ideas. They can be customised to suit individual needs and situations, or a design and build service can be provided for entirely bespoke builds for a broad demographic.

“We are in a growing area and because we’ve have the advantage of the coastal proximity, we can cater for people who are looking for a retirement home, holiday accommodation or first home buyers.”

JDBuilders recently started a large commercial renovation on East Otago High School, which won through a Ministry of Education tender process.

The project covers two blocks comprising a total of 16 classrooms and involves future- proofing the exterior by the addition of weatherboards, replacing the windows on one block with double glazed aluminium joinery, replacing the trusses, and a reroof along with exterior alterations.

Interior work includes replacing ceiling panels and removing skylights.

The classrooms have been weatherproofed by a full temporary canopy to streamline the work and to eliminate weather delays.

Highlighting the scope of work JDBuilders can tackle, the company has completed an impressive renovation on a beautiful two-storey rural lifestyle home clad in Oamaru stone in Herbert.

A key aspect of the renovation was to replace its roof.

“New roofing was required and initially the client had opted for slate, however, this was not possible due to the pre-existing trusses/framing in place, which had been designed for a lighter roof.

“Fortunately, we were able to suggest a product with the aesthetics of slate but much lighter weightwise.”

The project also involved cleaning the Oamaru stone, fitting doubleglazed windows, the addition of barge boards, and the installation largeformat frost resistant synthetic porcelain tiles, which replaced the original paving outside the front entrance.

“Our clients were so happy with the result that we have been invited back at a later time to complete some interior upgrades.”

If you would like to find out more about JDBuilders and the services they provide, please ring Jeff on 027 354 1754 or visit their website JDBuilders.nz

A hands-on approach

Here at Primevue Construction we pride ourselves on thinking and working outside the box.

This means not getting hung up on the materials that aren’t available, but instead focusing on adapting to the use of alternative and interesting products to complement your exclusive design as needed. It’s our job to adapt to the ever-changing building industry and make sure you get the dream home you want. We provide expert construction and project management services in the Queenstown area for projects big and small.

As a small family run business that punches well above our weight, we are incredibly proud of our ability to create beautiful homes and have the skills to complete all aspects of those builds. From foundations to completion and everything in between, we can do it all so you can have a stress-free build you can call home and be proud of.

The foundation for Primevue Construction has been in the making for a long time. We have been on both sides of building homes – from being in charge of build projects and being clients of a large building franchise for our own build. It’s from these experiences that we have both learned what the client wants and how building sites work. We bring the best of both experiences to Primevue Construction and believe our approach to construction is the right one.

Blair has been building for 13 years and has worked on a variety of projects from the removal and repair of leaky buildings in Auckland, commercial tilt slab buildings to high end architectural homes. He’s found the best success for Primevue is a hands on approach, communitcating clearly and often with realistic timelines and solid bookings.

We are excited about the future of the building industry in Queenstown so get in touch with Blair to discuss your project.

Looking to list your property? Here’s how to get started

Here’s what to think about as you look to list your property.

It is important to find a real estate professional who can deliver a standout marketing campaign, advise you on key steps for getting your property ready to list, and who will tell you what you need to know throughout the selling process.

Research is key

Using a real estate salesperson can result in a more effective sale than selling privately. They will handle the details of the marketing and sales process, the cut and thrust of the negotiation or auction, and you can rest assured that you’re protected throughout the process by their expertise and requirements under the Real Estate Agents Act.

To find the right person for you, ask around; talk to family, friends and neighbours and see if they have any recommendations on real estate salespeople they have previously used and whom they had a good experience with.

It’s also fundamental to understand where the market is today before you head into the selling process. Doing some of your own research is vital, however, you can rely on your salesperson to bring expertise.

Salespeople have the time, access to the latest data and market information, and advise on exactly what is happening in your market for your type of property. Having honest conversations with your real estate salesperson will enable you to understand the current market and the best approach for selling your home.

Honesty is the best policy

A real estate professional will help to manage your price expectations with the latest statistics, their knowledge of the current market, the local area, what properties are attracting the most attention and why, the current levels of attendance at open homes, and more.

They should also explain what they will do behind the scenes to ensure the best possible outcome for you.

They can advise you on the best way to present your property for sale including aspects such as required maintenance, tidying up of gardens, decluttering, or home-staging.

With these factors come costs, and your real estate professional should ensure you are aware of the aspects you may need to invest in when selling

your home so there are no surprises, and so you can factor this into your budget.

Look for a salesperson who can demonstrate knowledge of your local area and community, ideally with a network of potential buyers, as this can help ensure your property is best positioned and marketed to the right people. Make sure you understand what a salesperson’s commission fee is. While fees do vary by agency, our advice is that choosing a salesperson on commission alone could lead to losing a significant amount of money by achieving a lower price for the property.

The Real Estate of Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) is a champion for a world-class real estate profession delivering the best possible real estate services to New Zealanders.

Choosing a REINZ real estate professional member means you are choosing someone who is supported to excel in the profession, and are trusted, skilled professionals, supported by high-quality education, advice, and uphold the best standards of practice.

Making home ownership dreams come true

As a trusted real estate consultant, I understand that selling and/or buying a home is complex and deeply personal.

Clients know I’m trustworthy and experienced as I have been in the real estate industry since 2016, and I’m a part of the award-winning team at Harcourts Ashburton. There is also a lot at stake financially and personally. This perspective of the process and the responsibility I feel for my clients is what drives me to be the best. I want to make sure you feel supported and that you always know you have someone you can trust and rely on by your side.

When I’m not making home ownership dreams come true for my clients, I enjoy my voluntary involvement with multiple community organisations like helping sports clubs and individuals with their fundraising and administration needs. As part of my voluntary work spanning nearly two decades, I have been running weekly bingo nights as a fundraiser for my sports club. The satisfaction this voluntary work has given me was what lead me to my career in real estate.

Unlocking build-to-rent housing

Property Council New Zealand chief executive, Leonie Freeman, says the initiative could mark a key turning point towards unlocking the potential of Build to Rent.

“Our members share the government’s view that enabling Build to Rent will provide warm, dry rental homes that offer Kiwis long-term security of tenure.

“It is encouraging to see that the government has listened to our sector and acknowledged Build to Rent as a unique property asset class.

“The government’s announcement is a major step towards boosting New Zealand’s emerging Build to Rent sector.

“Build to Rent will transform the experience of renting in New Zealand.

“Property Council research shows that our members stand poised to deliver over 25,000 Build to Rent homes in the next decade, with the right policy settings.

“Build to Rent refers to multi-unit residential developments, typically located in city centres within walking distance of key transport links.

“These developments are professionally managed, with brilliant amenities available onsite, offering residents bespoke lifestyle options for as long as they want to stay.

“By enabling Build to Rent, the property sector will be able to deliver thousands of new high-quality, high-density rental houses, supporting New Zealand’s urban intensification and climate ambitions.

“Kiwis will hopefully soon have many choices to access to a warm, dry and climate friendly Build to Rent home.

“Over the past 18 months, the Property Council has been working closely with the government to highlight the untapped potential of Build to Rent and explain the legislative actions required to enable it.

“As part of this, we have collaboratively resolved the unintended consequences of last year’s interest deductibility changes.

“While the announcement has been a fantastic step in the right direction, there are a few remaining speedbumps to truly unlock the concept.

“For Build to Rent to flourish, access to large institutional investment via the overseas investment act and commercial depreciation is also required.

“The Property Council looks forward to continuing our engagement with the government to support the roll out of the world’s fastest growing residential sector in Aotearoa.”

The best in property management

With over 20 years of experience in property management, Fiona Morland has created a business model that works. Under the business name “My Property Manager”, Fiona has made sure that knowledge of the property owners, tenants and properties she’s working with are at the core of her business. “Interaction with all three areas is vital to providing property owners service,” she says.

She believes that accountability and transparency are what people are looking for. “This is backed up by accurate systems, easy to understand statements, informative property inspection reports and a solid knowledge of the industry,” Fiona says.1

Fiona’s vision is to manage a small, well-organised portfolio that provides fantastic customer service that removes work and stress from the property owner’s life. She makes this vision a reality by covering every aspect of the job and not delegating any part to someone unfamiliar with the property or tenants.

There are several core aspects to the business model. Tenant selection ensures property owners aren’t saddled with unfit tenants. Property inspection and maintenance ensure that properties are kept in excellent condition. Fiona also deals with rent collection and payments in a stress-free manner. Training and knowledge are a massive part of the business and Fiona has a thorough understanding of the Tenancy Law and best practices in the Tenancy Tribunal.

Technology is a big part of running My Property Manager as Fiona understands that technology is increasing in every part of our lives. She also provides useful resources for property owners. Fiona has no hidden fees. “The free structure is straightforward. 8% plus GST on all rent collected. There are no inspection fees, credit check fees, maintenance charges or set up costs,” she explains.

Fiona doesn’t just focus on the property owner either. She understands that tenants are essential too. “When renting through me, you can expect the same level of service the property owners receive because a happy tenant is also a priority,” she says.

My Property Manager will assist in the viewing and application process a prospective tenant must go through. During the tenancy, a property inspection will be completed around six weeks after a new tenant moves in. Fiona will manage all maintenance needs. At the end of the tenancy, Fiona will complete a final inspection and complete bond repayments and more.

Life is just so busy, so why not remove some of the stress by handing over your rentals to someone with your best interests at heart and who will provide the service you deserve.

Fiona is focused on service and lifestyle so you can be assured as either a property owner or tenant that your needs will be met to a high standard.

With two decades of practical experience, knowledge and training within the property management industry, you can be sure she will be providing the latest information, skills and care. She’s also backed up by her solid client feedback. She’s maintained client relationships for over 20 years who have found her thoroughly reliable and trustworthy. She’s met the needs of property managers, kept them informed and manages properties with great professionalism. So, for the best in property management, get hold of Fiona at My Property Manager.

Wandering through the

Wairarapa

With its five characterful towns Wairarapa has terrific shopping, a thriving art and culture scene, a beautiful and at times dramatic coastline, and of course – at the heart of the Classic NZ Wine Trail – superb food, beverage and accommodation.

Just a short drive over the hill from Wellington, the region is super easy to get to.

In Greytown country charm is on full display with a rich heritage of beautiful Victorian-era buildings and tree-lined streets. It is also one of New Zealand’s premiere shopping and food destinations thanks to its independent boutiques, specialist stores, cafes and restaurants.

Many of these businesses are housed in sensitively restored colonial buildings. Learn all about Greytown’s rich history at Cobblestones, a charming historic village and museum on the main street at the southern end of town.

While there, treat yourself to something sweet at Schoc Chocolate studio where owner Murray Langham has created over 80 flavours of his tablet bars, including the most popular lime and chilli.

Neighbouring Featherston and Martinborough exude charm too. Featherston is the gateway to the Wairarapa when arriving from the south, and proudly New Zealand’s only Booktown. Featherston has more book shops per head of population than anywhere else in the country, with the annual Booktown Festival in May.

Another “Feathy” favourite is the Fell Locomotive Museum which houses H199, the only locomotive of its type in the world and presents a unique aspect of New Zealand’s railway heritage.

The locomotive is one of six engines designed for use on New Zealand’s famous Remutaka Rail Trail. The fascinating history of the Remutaka Rail Trail and its Fell locomotives is recalled in the museum with photographs, models, memorabilia, films and an audio-visual presentation “Rimutaka 1949”.

Completing the South Wairarapa’s trio of towns is Martinborough, a true wine village, hemmed by boutique vineyards with 24 cellar doors, many offering wonderful vineyard dining experiences.

Closely knitted together, getting from one vineyard to another is easy - within walking distance, or better still, a quick pedal with “cycling the vines” which is popular among visitors, (note, electric bikes are available).

Carterton is in the heart of Wairarapa, while book-ending the north is the region’s main centre, Masterton. Beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park, in the middle of town, is the “Jewel in the Crown”, and opposite it is an arts precinct as good as any in all of provincial New Zealand.

Away from the valley and its generous larder is a region of stunning natural beauty; on one side the mountainous Tararua Forest Park, the other a wild stretch of rugged, breathtakingly spectacular coastline.

Jaw-dropping natural scenery greets visitors who make the 50-minute drive out to Castlepoint, east of Masterton. The iconic lighthouse, limestone reef, golden sand beach and the imposing Castle Rock will leave you spellbound. So too will the road to Cape Palliser, Wairarapa’s southern-most point.

For more on the region, visit: www.wairarapanz.com.

I don’t want a fuss

Shortly after I began in this role I spoke to my parents about their wishes for a funeral.

“I don’t want a fuss,” said my mum. “And it’s so expensive,” dad added.

It’s a common refrain and as a newcomer to the industry was one I was initially challenged to respond to. But over the last few months I’ve come to understand why some kind of farewell is essential to those of us left behind.

Some of the early healing can help when you’re preparing for a funeral

Going through old photos and reminiscing and sharing stories can be a powerful way to remember the significance of the life of your loved one. There will be laughter as well as tears and it can be an important bonding time for your family.

An ‘event’ helps a family move through the grief process

The funeral ‘event’ can help you begin to acknowledge the reality that someone in your life has died. Grief is a biological reaction, and it can be externalised though the event –something that will help with your immediate and future mental wellbeing.

Funerals help us recall and remember – and even learn about a loved one

How many times have you sat through a funeral eulogy and realised you didn’t know a certain fact about someone? Sharing unique memories and stories helps provide support to all those who attend.

They can involve people near and far

Many funeral homes now offer livestreaming of services reducing the cost and burden on physically attending.

Traditional, scripted services are no longer the norm

Modern funerals are personalised and can encompass whatever a family needs to help them farewell their loved one in a meaningful way. Venues these days, for instance, range from churches and chapels to sports clubs, theatres, or the local club. And families are encouraged to add their own touches and tributes – both to save money but to also make it meaningful for them.

Your needs are just as important as those of the person who died

Finally, people often think they must ‘respect a person’s wishes’. But what about your own? You’re the one left behind so it’s important for you and your own wellbeing that you get that chance to say goodbye, and to have support around you.

If you genuinely fear disrespecting their wishes, have ‘that’ conversation. It doesn’t have to be morbid or difficult – after all you’ll be talking to the person you love most, and they’ll understand you will need help to carry on without them.

Luckily, my parents were already planning to use a Funeral Directors Association member so I don’t have to have that conversation. But with my new found knowledge I’ve also been able to talk to them about what I need from the funeral itself. And at least a little bit of fuss is what’s right for me.

Providing Gentle Guidance When You Need It Most

Simplicity Funerals Christchurch

The team likes to help people honour the lives of loved ones and bring family, friends, and communities together to say goodbye on the client’s terms. Having to go through the process of setting up a funeral brings a lot of emotions, but Simplicity Funerals Christchurch makes it easier for clients to feel like they’re not alone.

Services include financial assistance, caskets and urns, hearses and vehicles, repatriation, sending a tribute, keepsakes jewellery, and more funeral options.

The team provides comfort, respect, and compassion. Jamie, Mike, Nick, and Nina can provide a funeral in any venue the client chooses. They have a lot of experience in being there for people and helping

them find the right venue is important. The choice is the client’s – a funeral could be held in the Canterbury or Harewood Crematorium Chapels, the client’s home, church, Graveside service at the cemetery, somewhere personal, or family gatherings can be held in the Simplicity Funeral’s Memories Lounge for a small group, including a cup of tea.

The company has been working with Canterbury families for over 145 years but was originally known as G Barrell & Sons in Christchurch. Jamie Harvey has over 10 years of experience in New Zealand funeral service and leads a team of experienced funeral directors.

What’s it like to pre-plan your funeral?

Planning your funeral can be part of a gentle process of putting your affairs in order. It can create peace of mind for you, and certainty for those you love, because they know how you wish them to celebrate your life after you are gone.

Our staff and funeral directors are empathetic, professional and prioritise giving you, your family and loved ones the most comfortable respectful experience as possible. We aim for the most seamless and meaningful process to take the stress out of an often trying time.

We’ll make it happen with the honesty, warmth, and personal service that the people of Christchurch Ōtautahi have trusted for 135+ years.

Celebrate your life, your way

The team at John Rhind Funeral Directors offer a free funeral planning service. We can visit your home for a relaxed conversation, and help you plan a ceremony that reflects your life, your values, and the people you love.

Your plans can be as simple or as detailed as you like, and we record your wishes so you can change your arrangements any time you wish. Everybody is different and unique and we really feel that one’s funeral should reflect this very sentiment.

We’re here to deliver with the traditions of dignity, respect, and service that are the hallmark of our dedicated team.

We serve the people of Canterbury from our two locations in Christchurch and Kaiapoi.

Start important conversations

Once you’ve made your funeral plans it’s a good idea to talk with the people important to you about your wishes. This can start beautiful conversations about your life. Sharing your life story is a precious gift to your family and to yourself.

By talking about your life, we can celebrate the joyful moments, forgive ourselves any regrets, and come to terms with how we’ve lived. Taking time to talk brings peace and closeness.

Spare your family worry about arrangements and costs

Paying for your funeral in advance can help spare your family worry about arrangements and costs. It also helps protect your pension.

Prepaid funerals up to $10,000 are excluded from asset testing when assessing your eligibility for subsidies for residential care. Your prepayment will be held safe in the Funeral Trust administered by The Funeral Directors Association of New Zealand, giving you piece of mind that we are upholding the standards consistent of the national level.

We’ve updated our website with helpful resources to help you pre-plan your funeral. Visit johnrhind.co.nz and take a look at the pre-planning section.

If you’d like to plan your funeral, the team at John Rhind are here to guide you through your choices. Call 03 379 9920 or emailstaff@johnrhind.co.nz
