editor’s letter Lick Magazine is pleased to feature the amazing actress, entrepreneur and advocate “Lisa Vanderpump” and her pampered Pomeranian pup, “Puffy” (short for Prince Harry), as our “Fashion & Advocacy” / Fall 2017 Covers. Lisa is the star of Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules” and rule she does in everything she does. She is an inspiration, role model and icon to admire having accomplished incredible feats on every level of her personal life. Though tremendously successful in her career, this powerhouse uses her star power not merely for personal gain but to employ compassion, love and respect for “All” living creatures. And with Lick Philosophy -- pays it forward in kindness through her recently founded “Vanderpump Dog Foundation” (www.vanderpumpdogs.org). The foundation supports the adoption and well being of pets locally as well as legislatively worldwide. Through her successful “World Dog Day events” and pursuit of global awareness and legislation for change on animal atrocities like Yulin China’s Annual Dog Meat Festival; Lisa brings the planet one step closer to universal love. “Tucker was the Gary Grant of the furbaby world. He was a gentle furboy and will be greatly missed by his G girl family!�
I met Tucker for the first time at the “G Girls Cotillion 2017 event” in West Palm Beach, Florida where unbeknownst to me he was a contestant in the “International Dog Fashion Contest”. Looking at his easy smile and kind eyes, Tucker exuded that “something special.” He was quite handsome all decked out in his beautifully designed brocade Matador costume . There was something about him that captivated me and I knew I would be including this handsome fur boy in my next Lick edition. Tucker won the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Later that evening Tucker went on to win the Cotillion trophy for “International Dog 2017”! Little did I know that this would be Tucker’s last win. Tucker passed on soon after the Cotillion event but is sorely missed by his devoted and loving human mom “Diane Israel” .. always proud of her little man. And Tucker is missed by all of us whose life he touched even for just a moment. I know Tucker is walking on that pet fashion runway somewhere up there in doggie heaven. But someone beautiful is missing down here on planet earth.

Riding Odyssey Chief Joseph Trail Ride 2017

What’s Your Next Adventure? Sometimes your heart says go and when your mind follows it’s sure to be epic! There is a horse trek that the Appaloosa Horse Club of America puts on every year. A group of courageous souls rides 100 miles over the path the Nez Perce traversed to evade the Calvary. They do 100 miles every year for 13 years. In 2017 the 1,300 mile adventure began again and President of Women in the Pet Industry Network, Shawna Schuh was there. “I went alone, hauling my horse in a borrowed trailer, which I had never done before. Setting up my own tent/ bedroll each night and tearing it all down each morning. I rode alongside 130 other riders and met angels along the way. This trip tested me in ways I hadn’t imagined and I’m thrilled I followed my heart.” says, Schuh. This is one of the most fascinating and sorrowful events in Western U.S. history. Here are some details on the trek... The flight of the Nez Perce began on June 15, 1877. Pursued by the US Army, they intended initially to seek safety with their Crow allies on the plains to the east. Chief Joseph, Chief Looking Glass, Chief White Bird, Chief Ollokot, Chief Lean Elk, and others led nearly 750 Nez Perce men, women, and children and twice that many horses over 1,170 miles through the mountains, on a trip that lasted from June to October of 1877. Forced to abandon hopes for a peaceful move to the Lapwai reservation, the Nez Perce chiefs saw flight to Canada as their last promise for peace. Their desperate and circuitous route as they tried to escape the pursuing white forces is what we now call the Nez Perce National Historic Trail. Shawna expereinced many leadership/character building lessons along the way, and just like being in business, it was both thrilling and a little scary. Here are photos from this first 100 miles of the trip. May they inspire you to step out and up into something that tests you, strengthens you and allows you to live epically!

Boykie started walking in the woods where he lives in Bergen, northern Holland, when he was about 3 months old. On one of his adventures when he was about 8 months old he met Dax, another young German Shepard, who is 6 months older than Boykie. As they saw each other almost every day on their walks, their owners started walking together on set times. They became best friends forever and love to play, taking turns sharing sticks they find. Now they also come to each others houses to play. Boykie is now 4½ years and Dax is 5 years old and we hope their friendship continues for a long, long time.

lick pet person JOHN BARRYMORE and DANIEL DICRISCIO I have known John Barrymore since 2009 and consider him a good friend. He is charming, friendly, a great conversationalist, funny, articulate and possesses a love for animals which, for me, is a big “check mark” in my list of things I look for in people. John Barrymore, also known as John Blythe Barrymore III, comes from Hollywood Royalty: The Barrymore family. His father was legendary actor John Drew Barrymore and his mother was actress Cara Williams. His grandfather was John Barrymore. His half sister is actress Drew Barrymore (they share the same father) and he is the grandnephew of Ethel Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore. What a Family Tree! John shares the famous John Barrymore moniker as his father and grandfather and he is also the father of three children from his previous marriage. John has been in and out of “The Biz” but has an impressive list of credits that include “Kung Fu” starring the late David Carradine to playing “Hamlet” to a recent viral internet web show “Lasagna Cat” a parody about the Garfield the Cat comic strip, to “Fake News” starring alongside Eric Roberts. He’s also appeared on “Lou Grant” and did voice work on “Cry Baby”. Fun Fact: John was tapped on the shoulder to play Eddie Munster on the television series “The Munsters” but his mom declined the role on his behalf and John is thankful to her for not allowing him to be a child actor. John has been a guest at many of my past birthday parties from Sur Lounge (that RHOBH’s Lisa Vanderpump and nightclub impresario Jeffrey Sanker hosted) to my Chateau Marmont birthday bash to my recent bday celebration at celeb hotspot “Catch” with his pooch in hand! John recently made a celebrity cameo in my new dance music video “X Sex”. Wherever John goes whether it’s red carpets, filmings, my video shoot, events, he brings his pup with him. I spoke with John ...and as always he’s enlightening, funny, and full of knowledge..even about hair color, lol... but mostly we chatted and got to know more about his main lady friend in his life, his sweet pup named Jasmine!
DD: Hi John! Since you have this beautiful dog named Jasmine, have you always been a Dog person?
JB: When I was a child I had dogs and other members of my family also had them. My dog was a Miniature Schnauzer named Shakespeare and my older sister Cathy had a champagne colored German Shepherd named Tempest. As an adult I had always had cats, because they’re lower maintenance and don’t really care when you’re not home. DD: What kind of breed is Jasmine?
JB: She’s a Japanese Chin, also called a Japanese
Spaniel or Japanese Chin Spaniel. It’s a 400 year old breed; they’re palace dogs from the era of the Shogun in Japan, the 17th century. DD: How did you get Jasmine? You brought Jasmine with you recently to my birthday celebration at Catch, and she was very well mannered! Is she trained or is that just innately her way?
JB: This is the only reason I got a pure bred dog instead
of a rescue. I had a girlfriend up in Monterey and she had one of these dogs. I was amazed at how incredibly chill the animal was – this was her second Japanese Chin, her first had lived to be seventeen or eighteen years. I took my girlfriend’s dog around with me quite a bit up there (The Monterey peninsula, particularly Carmel where my girlfriend was living, is a very dog-friendly place) and trained her to loose leash walk in one day (you can do that with just about any dog if you know what you’re doing). Well, after the girlfriend and I split up, I really missed her dog. So I went looking for breeders and found only three; the one in Indiana (or maybe Idaho? Iowa? I’m bad at names) where my girlfriend had gotten hers, one in Texas and one in San Diego, who turned out to be the daughter of the breeder in Texas. The San Diego one was the one I chose, of course, because I wanted to go pick the dog up, not have her air shipped, I figured even under the best circumstances that experience has to be a little traumatic for a dog, plus I wanted to get a look at the breeder’s operation (which I did when I went to pick Jasmine up)

and I was not disappointed. She had all the dogs living in her house with her, and she definitely wasn’t in it for the money; she charged half the “going rate” for a chin, $1,250 instead of $2,500. I was taking my kids on a road trip that included coming down here to L.A., the town I grew up in (and once again reside in) so the breeder agreed to keep Jasmine an extra month to accommodate my schedule, I picked her up from the breeder at four months instead of the more customary three. The whole process took about eight months because once I found the breeder, I had to wait for a litter, hers was a very small operation. So once the litter came it was four females.. I had to pick her out from a photo of the four, so I just picked the one with the most black; I have no fashion sense so I have a lot of black clothes. The breeder told me to pick out a name and she would start calling her by that name right away. So I picked Jasmine, and when I went to pick her up with my daughters, the breeder gave me a blanket with Jasmine’s name embroidered on it and because I picked her up at four months instead of three, she was completely litter box trained. I already had two cats at home so I just switched Jasmine from going in a litter box to going on a puppy pad, it was very easy. As far as the strategy of picking the dog from the litter with the most black, that didn’t really have much of an effect. I’m still covered with white hair, though I’m always unsure as to whether it’s Jasmine’s or mine. As far as training is concerned, when I first got her and she was a small puppy (about the size of a guinea pig), we took an American Kennel Club “Canine Good Citizenship” class, and because of what I learned there I took her around early and made sure she was socialized; used to other dogs, and used to children. That’s it, the rest she does on her own, and the reason she’s so chill, well I’m sure it’s the breed. DD: You come from a famous family, The Barrymores, were there many dogs owned in that family or were they more cat people?
JB: My mother, Cara Williams, was born in Brooklyn and
her parents weren’t really pet people but my mother has always had a dog, right now she’s got a Peekapoo or however it’s spelled, a Pekinese and Poodle mix named Gigi. Gigi is one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever seen and even Jasmine is a little too smart for my own good. My father’s parents, my grandfather John Barrymore and my grandmother Dolores Costello, they were definitely dog people. I never met my paternal grandfather; he died in 1942, twelve years before I was born, but in his will he
left his dog to the care of his Japanese gardener. I don’t know how that really worked out since in 1942 if you were Japanese you were probably headed for an internment camp. I never asked but my guess is that even though they were divorced Dolores probably took the dog. Dolores I got to know fairly well during my twenties, I was living in Vista, in the North San Diego County,and Dolores had an Avacado Ranch in Fallbrook, also in North County. She had an entire pack of dogs there, seven or eight of them and in that pack, as in many packs of dogs or wolves, the alpha dog was a female. Yes, that’s right, with canines the alpha male is just as frequently a female. DD: Do you consider Jasmine your friend, child, or pet and is she an important part of your day?
JB: She’s my friend, and a very important part of my day.
She always makes me smile, and people nearly always smile when they see her, though sometimes they’re just laughing at the image of the two of us together. DD: When you and Jasmine go out on the town, does she attract a lot of attention?
JB: Sometimes I’ll have four beautiful women on their
knees making a fuss over my dog, and one will look up and I’ll say, “I swear this is not why I got her.” and it’s not why I got her. I got her because even from the time she was a puppy she spends eighty to ninety percent of her time just sitting on a pillow. I found a dog that matched my lifestyle; I didn’t want a dog like a Jack Russell that I would have to run the energy out of every day, I’m not exactly a jock. Apparently, though, when it comes to attracting female attention, Jasmine was the dog to get, and I’m certainly not complaining about it. Guys have tried to rent her from me! DD: Any advice you would give someone who is looking to get a puppy or dog?
JB: Dogs are pack (social) animals. They don’t like to be left alone, they’re not at ease when they’re alone. If you work long hours and can’t take your dog with you, get two dogs so they can keep each other company, or get a cat.
DD: Since you are an actor, has Jasmine done any acting?
JB: Oh yes. I played a gay Lebanese porn director in a
thing called CGI Sex Files; it was one of those Showtime Friday night guilty pleasures erotic thriller type of things. I held Jasmine for the entire scene. Then, for the same director, James Bills, I had a much larger part in his film Hitchhiker Massacre (spoiler alert: I’m the massacre-er).
Jasmine helped me get one of the girls into the car so I could kill her, though in the movie I called her, “Princess.” DD: What’s John Barrymore up to these days?
JB: I’m doing more acting work now than I ever was
when trying to pursue an acting career; people have been throwing jobs at me, bigger and better parts all the time, simply because I’m much more castable now than back when I was a skinny red-headed kid, there are just a lot more parts for me: Casual Grandpa, Creepy Grandpa, Dying of Cancer Grandpa, Hitchhiker Massacre-ing Grandpa, you name it. It’s the white hair – redheads never go gray, the red hair just fades to white, so even though I’m 63, people seem to notice the hair first and their impression is that I’m older than my chronological age. So I have a lot of films that are finished but not yet released including Tales of Frankenstein directed by Don Glut (it’s four separate stories, and I have the lead in the second of the four) and Fake News directed by Chris Edwards. Eric Roberts is in that one and the last time I saw Eric was maybe thirty years ago. He knew I would be working on the film but
clearly had no idea who I was until I announced myself and the same thing happened to me the other day when I ran into two old and very good friends whom I hadn’t seen since my father’s wake in 2004. No one from my past recognizes me because I don’t have red hair anymore. I also did a cameo in your music video which was fun and I brought Jasmine on set with me there, too! By the way, about four years ago I was playing Hamlet up at the Forest Theater Carmel. Well, Hamlet is younger than I was so I dyed my hair, not red, that would look ridiculous at this point, but a realistic color, dark ash blonde or light ash brown. I would just be walking down a street in Monterey and the same girls, that is the same age girls who were flirting with me twenty-five years ago, girls in their late twenties and early thirties, were flirting with me again. It made me think, “Really? Is it that stupid? Is it really that stupid? Is that really all it takes?” Apparently it is just that stupid, and that is all it takes! But Jasmine doesn’t seem to care, she likes me whichever color I am!

Lisa Vanderpump, actress, advocate and entrepreneur known for her role on Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules” created The “Vanderpump Dog Foundation” and opened her chic pink “Vanderpump Dogs” in West Hollywood, CA in 2016 to support her love for dogs locally and animal welfare worldwide.
♥ The “Vanderpump Dog Foundation”, founded in 2016, is a 501c3 dog rescue organization, working on both a domestic and international front to help create a better world for dogs.
Although they are a Los Angeles based Foundation, their story begins in Yulin, China. After becoming aware of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival and witnessing the horrific images of slaughter and abuse that the dogs in Yulin face, the founders Lisa Vanderpump & Ken Todd began the long journey towards the cessation of barbaric torture practices in Yulin and ending the dog meat trade in Asia. Together with their partner Dr. John Sessa, they launched the campaign “Stop Yulin Forever”. The movement gained momentum and has inspired activists all over the world to
end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival and encourage more humane treatment for dogs worldwide. The “Vanderpump Dog Foundation” was formed to aid in ending this international atrocity and also better the lives of dogs domestically. The United States faces many problems of its own including dog overpopulation, abuse, neglect and lack of education with regards to spaying and neutering pets. The Foundation is built on a platform of education, legislation, and activism.
The “Vanderpump Dog Foundation” has both short and long term goals. Their approach is both pragmatic and political. With grassroots campaigns like free spay/neuter days for rescue pet owners in Los Angeles, to global health studies with the World Health Organization to ban the consumption of dog meat, “The Vanderpump Dog Foundation” has a multi-faceted approach to creating a better world for man’s best friend.

♥ Lick Magazine: Lisa, where did your love of animals come from? Did you have many pets as a child? Lisa Vanderpump: As a child, I had two Persian cats. Unfortunately, one was run over and I remember the devastation of losing what was like a family member. LM: And what about dogs? LV: I had my first dog when I was 18. I left home and had my own place. My parents never wanted dogs so I jumped at the chance! My love of animals carried on into my relationship with my husband, Ken.
Really, when I said a “potbelly pig”, I was joking about my husband Ken! When we lived in the English countryside; we had chickens, ponies, cats and dogs, a veritable farm and yes the children Max and Todd grew up with them!
♥ LM: I love the pink “Vanderpump Dog” van. What is that being used for?
LM: I understand it didn’t take long for you to marry Ken after you met him (how many weeks?) Did you know right away that he was an animal lover or was that the icing on the cake?
LV: For rescuing dogs! Come visit our dog rescue center “Vanderpump Pets”. Since it’s been opened we have managed to rescue many dogs, placing them in loving homes.
LV: Well, we were meant to be. One time, I was with Ken, and we did a U-turn on this road in England just to see about a dog that was there. Ken has always been incredibly supportive, I don’t know anyone else’s husband who has gone the distance he has. We’ve been married since 1982. That’s 35 years!
♥
LM: Tell our readers about your current menagerie. What are the dog’s names and breeds? Are they all rescues? LV: Currently, I have eight dogs. Some are rescues, some are gifts, some are old and some are young. I make it a point to adopt not shop now! Pomeranians: “Pikachu”, “Puffy” (Prince Harry), “Gigolo” (Giggy) and “Pink Dog”. “Puffy” I got from a rescue center in Sacramento. He, unfortunately has alopecia (like Giggy) but he’s doing a lot better now. One Maltese named “Lollypop”. One American Cocker Spaniel – which was a wedding anniversary gift to us – named “Schnooky”. A Golden Retriever named “Rumpy”, who ended up falling in love with an older woman (dog), “Avery” another Golden Retriever. “Rumpy” is doing very well after a diet and some exercise. I have a total of eight dogs, six swans, two miniature horses, one show horse, a few turtles “and a potbelly pig named Ken Todd?” That’s a running joke!
LM: Tell us about “World Dog Day”? LV: World Dog Day, started by “The Vanderpump Dog Foundation” in 2016, is a day that focuses on the celebration of dogs! The day aims to draw attention to the amazing, empathetic creatures that dogs are, while raising awareness about global dog abuse. Together, we can create a better world for dogs, both domestically and internationally. We rescued a wonderful dog named Lanae from a kill shelter in Los Angeles who had 4 one week old puppies. We named them Farrah, Faye, Frankie & Fiona and they were brought to the “Vanderpump Dog Rescue Center” where they were needed to be bottle fed every three hours due to their age! On World Dog Day, all of the puppies went to their forever homes in the Greater Los Angeles area! We love hearing about all their adventures from their new owners, who constantly keep us updated!

♥ LM: I am sure that everyone who loves dogs would appreciate an update on the situation with the Chinese government, the June 21st “Yulin Chinese Dog Meat Festival” and any progress being made to shut it down. I believe there was a ban on the selling of dog meat. Certainly a start and I heard that The “Vanderpump Dog Foundation” went over to China and rescued animals? LV: Dr. John Sessa, the Executive Director of the “Vanderpump Dog Foundation”, flew to China for a wellness mission following the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. On this mission, Dr. Sessa brought over medicine and was able to vaccinate 1,200 dogs that had been intercepted on trucks from the Festival. Alongside our partners in the California State government, we are working to write legislation in order to further regulate breeding in our state.
The bill urges the government of China and the Yulin authorities to ban the torture, killing and eating of dogs as part of Yulin’s Festival and to enforce China’s food safety laws. The bill affirms the United States’ commitment to protect animals. Resolution 752 has now been reintroduced to the Congress by Congressmen Alcee Hastings as Resolution 30, now expanded as HR 401 in the new Congress. We are seeking bipartisan support of HR 401 in the hopes that it is presented on the floor and subsequently passed. LM: Tell me about the documentary you’re making and when we can expect to see it?
We are helping state legislators to raise breeding license fees and tighten regulations on this industry, to bring an end to Puppy Mills.
LV: Regarding the documentary, we have completed the first part and are hoping to submit it to a film festival this year. It’s called “The Road to Yulin.” It’s about the torture and slaughter of dogs at the “so-called” festival in Yulin, China. We’ve managed to get attention and visibility around the world about this horrific situation.
Regarding Yulin, there was a 10-day “temporary ban” on the selling of dog meat prior to the festival and a few days during as well.
LM: Lisa, what would you like to tell my readers about the role animals play in our lives OR what they can do to help these voiceless creatures? Feel free to be philosophical.
We are bringing over 4 of these dogs that will be adopted in Los Angeles at the “Vanderpump Dog Rescue Center” and will serve as our 2017 Yulin Ambassadors for the Foundation.
LV: I feel that animals truly enhance our lives and make the world a better place. I think it’s important for children to have a pet in the house as it teaches them empathy and kindness.
These ambassadors serve as educators and awareness of the horrible Festival that takes place every year and we hope these beautiful animals can bring more attention and a face to the on going situation that needs to end
I feel that the connection of rescuing a dog that often has experienced abuse is amazing. They know their life has changed for the better and they are so appreciative.
♥ LM: Are there any new laws in the works to protect dogs? LV: Yes, legislatively, in 2016, The “Vanderpump Dog Foundation” helped initiate Resolution 752, that condemns the annual Dog Meat Festival in Yulin, China.
It’s been very hard to separate myself from the instant bonding that I have with the dogs that come into the center – but finding them a great home is our mission.

Although “I Don’t Like Spiders and Snakes” was a big hit for Jim Stafford back in 1974, many people actually do enjoy sharing their lives with crawling beings. With the bewitching time of year upon us however, I thought it appropriate to talk about what happens when worlds collide and one of these beings goes rogue, biting or stinging our four-legged best friend! Dogs and cats are natural hunters and often go in search of smaller animals as prey, but like humans…they can experience an allergic or inflammatory reaction if not worse when bitten or stung by a venomous creature. Most injuries occur on the face or in the mouth since cats and dogs snap at or try to catch the flying and crawling critters in their mouths, but they can also sit or step on a stinging insect, arachnid or venomous reptile.
WHEN THE WORST HAPPENS If you don’t see the incident occur, but notice some swelling to a body part of licking, you may assume your pet has been bitten and should administer first-aid. If however, you
notice any of the following symptoms, which usually occur within one hour, seek veterinary assistance immediately: pain, fever or body temperature below 100°F, profuse swelling, rash, breathing difficulty, rapid or irregular pulse, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, muscle tremors or rigidness, paralysis (including of the lungs) or Shock.
SPIDERS
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION… Keep down the insect population by
Most spider bites cause little more than painful swelling and should be treated like an insect sting since most spiders are unable to penetrate animal skin. There are a few species in the U.S. that are venomous (inject toxin through fangs) and can cause serious effects within 30 minutes to several hours of being stung.
Clear
Administer 1 mg Diphenhydramine for every pound pet weighs, and since spider toxin also contains acid, apply an alkaline baking soda or meat tenderizer (containing papain) made into a paste by mixing with small amounts of water. This may counteract the acidity if you can locate the site of the sting. Apply a cold pack to any swelling, but remove every few minutes to prevent frostbite. If you suspect the bite was caused by a venomous spider, also restrain movement (movement hastens the spread of venom) and get him quickly to veterinary care, bringing along the dead spider for identification.

dogs on-leash when hiking so that you can steer them clear of dangerous critters.
Stick to open paths as heavily travelled areas are less likely inhabited by reptiles.
Don’t let pets sniff under rocks and logs (it’s where snakes hide out). Do your best to step ON fallen logs rather than over them to cover hiding places underneath and prevent the snake from striking as you and your dog step over.
Eliminate garbage, wood piles and even ivy from pet play
areas. These are favorite locales of mice, and where mice hang out…snakes line up for dinner!
Look into a “positively reinforced” rattlesnake aversion class to see if it can lessen the prey drive in dogs eager to go on the chase.
SNAKES Even those without venom (toxic saliva) carry bacteria in their mouths (most don’t brush their teeth and consume rats and mice on a daily basis) which can cause infection in your pet. The physical appearance of each snake species varies, and it may be difficult to tell which species you’ve encountered unless you are familiar with herpetology (the study of amphibians and reptiles).

VENOMOUS VS NON-VENOMOUS SNAKES Here are general guidelines to determine if what you are seeing is venomous, but there are always exceptions to the rule:

Venomous snakes can be found in rural and suburban areas. In cold climates most hibernate from November through March. In warmer climates, however they are active year-round, and after mild winters, come out of hibernation early. Learn which species are indigenous to your neighborhood.
The degree of severity of any venomous snake bite depends on:
The species & size of snake The size of the animal bitten The amount of venom injected If you are certain it was a non-venomous snake… Wash the wound with antibacterial soap and observe. If red or warm to the touch, get to the veterinarian for antibiotics or other treatment. If you suspect it was a venomous snake:
Keep bite wound below level of heart to prevent speedy absorption of venom.
Keep
animal calm – the faster he moves, the faster the venom circulates.
Get
to the animal ER at once! Treatment should begin within 30 minutes of the bite, and it takes 30 minutes to mix the antidote. Some clinics are starting to carry a reconstituted version but make sure they have plenty on hand by calling ahead.
Do NOT cut over the bite and try to suck out the poison. Do NOT manipulate the bitten area or allow the pet to move about freely. Do NOT place an ice pack over the bite which will concentrate the toxin causing extensive, irreparable tissue damage. Rattlesnake Vaccine is not a cure-all but can minimize the severity of the bite. Check with your veterinarian for details.
Most snakes can control the amount of venom they inject and may deliver a “dry” bite to a human or large animal. Baby snakes, however, are born with venom and the means to inject it but aren’t yet “fang trained,” so generally hold on longer and deliver all the venom they have at one time. Hemotoxic venom disrupts the integrity of the blood vessels causing swelling as blood seeps into the tissue and prevents clotting. It also breaks down the tissue and “pre-digests” it making it easier for the snake to consume. Neurotoxic venom results in paralysis including that of the respiratory muscles ending in suffocation. Some snakes possess both types.

celand is an extraordinarily beautiful country with countless waterfalls, rugged coastlines, mountains, beaches, lava flows, moss fields and glaciers. In the summer months there is no “night” - the skies remain in constant twilight between sunset and sunrise. For photography the “golden hour” lasts literally hours. To catch the best light, it involved staying up late nights that evolved into early mornings. During mid-July the sun was setting at 11:30PM and rose again at 3:30AM!
