“San Francisco’s Newest Star!” Dear Mr. Heggen This is a photo of my dog ‘Waffles’ who is a regular at Huntington Park in San Francisco’s Nob Hill. He is a long-haired mini-Dachshund and always ready to meet/play with neighbor-hood canines. Waffles will be 9 years old and, at last count, has a wardrobe of over 70 shirts, sweaters, jackets and costumes for the Holidays. Would love to see him in your regular Doggie Walking Forecast. Kiwi is my new, Blue Abyssinian who became part of the family in January 2021 at three months old. Marula, my Ruddy Abyssinian was by herself for five months after her companion, Pebbles, passed away. Marula was almost 2½ years old at the time and extremely energetic and playful. She seemed lonely and bored without a companion. After careful consideration I felt that another cat her same breed would be the best fit, so I set out contacting breeders I knew about their upcoming litters. I was lucky to get Kiwi so quickly. I wanted a male, but all the litters had their kittens reserved - especially males. It looked like mid-2021 was when one might be available. Suddenly (and luckily for me), a person who had this kitten reserved changed his mind and I was offered Kiwi. I couldn’t believe I could get my new kitten in two weeks instead of six months! The introduction process went very smoothly and within a week they were together all the time. Marula still hisses at Kiwi fairly often, since he is a bit rambunctious and can play a bit roughly‑. But they are best friends who nap together on the cat tree and cuddle up next to me in bed every night.

lick spotlight - Shawna Schuh It was startling to arrive at base camp with a borrowed trailer, an untried and new to me horse, and 5 days of 20 miles a day riding ahead of me. Oh, and did I mention I knew absolutely no one? What an adventure! My handsome steed, Patric, and I have now traversed 300 miles of 1300 on this yearly progressive ride following the path the Nes Pearce Indians took in 1877. It’s called the Chief Joesph Trail Ride and they have been taking Appaloosa Horses on it since 1964. We have 10 more years of adventure ahead of us and now we know more, know each other and I call those strangers I met, my friends. Now that we've begun 2022, what adventures do you have planned? What adventures would you like to do? What is stopping you from leaving this article right now to go and put something on your calendar? Even if it’s a slot for planning adventure? Before I took the step to buy a horse, borrow a trailer and travel six hours to start this 13-year adventure I was living life like most everyone. Then, I did two things: First I made a decision. Then I took action. Now that I’m involved in this adventure it’s much easier to continue. What is stopping you from doing that now. I met Tyler Foxx on Facebook years ago.. I think 2007(?)... because of our love of and connection to Anna Nicole Smith. Tyler reached out and we became FB buddies. Recently, I was a guest on his show “Tyler’s World” on Audacy.com KLUC-FM Las Vegas and a few other sites, actually, I was a guest twice, the first time with Tyler and Ricky Cornish (Celebrity Page TV) as co-host! What a fun show that was!
KLUC-FM is Las Vegas’ No 1 Top 40 station and Tyler is one of their hottest dj’s ...if not The Hottest! Tyler is super fun, entertaining, and makes you feel like he’s been your friend forever. A sweetheart, literally, plus his name fits him to a T: Tyler (boy next door good looks) Foxx (need I say more!) Another thing I admire about Tyler is his love for animals. Tyler owns 5 happy dogs...yes, I said 5... and he is hands on supporting animals causes in Las Vegas. With a busy schedule spinning top 40 hits, hitting the gym, and spending quality time with his happy family of 5 pups, what more could you say..or want? Tyler has the life! So, I asked Tyler to be my next "Animal Chat" and he said Yes! How cool is that?! Very cool ...to be in "Tyler’s World!" DD: So Tyler how did you come to own 5 dogs? What are their names
and breeds?
TF: Well Daniel, my grandma always had a lot of dogs. She took in every single stray in town. Her kindness knew no bounds. As a kid, I spent lots of time with her and I got used to cleaning up after dogs and duty. My dogs are Tito who is is 20 years old or pretty close...he is a tiny 4lb chihuahua Lucky is about 12 years old he is another tiny chihuahua...he is the boss dog in my house. The King..actually... Bear is an Affenpinscher. He is about 10 years old. His preferred name is "baby" and come here "pooker doodle." Casper, is about 10 years old as well. He is a chihuahua terrier mix. He has spent most of his life in foster, shelter situations. He finally knows he is home with his pack and people. Remi is a 4 year old Doberman Pinscher... no she is NOT the boss. She loves her boys and loves looking after her pack of dwarfs. DD: Have you always been a dog person? What is about dogs that
you love?
TYLER FOXX & DANIEL DICRISCIO TF: My mom and grandma always rescued, so dogs have ALWAYS been a big part of my world and my childhood memories. I love that my doggies don’t care about what I do for a living. They just love me and love cuddles and treats. They don’t know anything else. That’s what makes it great. I live to love them a little bit more every single day. DD: What are some fun things your little family of pups do that makes
you smile?
TF: I love watching them interact with each other. What is it about intercommunications with each other make me wonder what I am missing out on. Their unspoken communication and understanding of each other is beyond wonderful. I wish I could translate it. Watching them sleep peacefully and live in abundance and health brings me great happiness. DD: Tyler, how do you find time to care of 5 dogs with your busy
schedule?
TF: I have a very regimented lifestyle, Daniel. I work out, I work from home half of the week and still balance going out and having a social life by keeping a consistent schedule and having help from friends and neighbors who love my babies as much as I do.
I have been blessed with an abundance of help. They have a lot of love around them. DD: Do you consider your pets family, friends, or your children?
TF: By law, they would be considered pets. By heart, and in front of god, they are my family friends and children. They spend the most time in a day with me. They are a mix of all of the above mentioned but at heart they are my children. I worry, I cry, I pay and clean for them. They are my babies..no doubt. DD: How was it during the covid pandemic with the lock-down in Las
Vegas with your pups? (I’ve experienced pet food and litter problems basically sold out at times, and having to drop off your pets at the vet office not being able to go inside with them.) TF: Tito is over 100 years old in dog years. He requires regular acupuncture treatments (he has IVDD) They take him from me in a doggy bag curb side and bring him back. I wish I was able to be with him but I trust medical providers and the CDC so dropping him and waiting for his procedure to be done is not a problem - the love he gives on the daily is worth it. Thankfully, we have not been impacted by issues with food or supplies. I’d like to add "Thank you" to all the front line providers, docs, store workers, etc, you are appreciated. DD: So tell us where we can listen to Tyler’s World & anywhere else

Mark just revived his strength to find his new Dudley.
As Mark says.. “We’re calling her ‘Hazel’ (due to her green eyes) also, it’s a cute name and she seems to have taken to it! She’s from south Texas (although she’s a “Democrat”!) and has been a perfect angel.
Hazel gets along with ALL dogs! That’s a nice change. I assume “It’s a girl thing!” XO - Mark "No Mark, getting along with other girls is not a girl thing. It’s a sweet, considerate and loving thing. And we hope getting along in general just becomes a 'people thing' soon! We wish you every happiness with 'Hazel.' And we look forward to her being the new contributor and author of Lick Magazine’s 'Hazel’s World' soon!"

Besides being a gorgeous hunk and former fashion model yourself how did you transition from being the subject in front of the camera to the eye behind the lens? LM: Tell us briefly about your most memorable career
highlights as a model and/or as a photographer.
MR: I actually got a camera for Xmas in 1993 and immediately became obsessed. I put in my 10,000 hours and voilà, a career was born. Working with one of my musical idols, Prince. The shoot went so well that he began requesting me for everything. LM: Having the experience of being on both sides of the camera
must create a unique perspective that few photographers experience. Do you think this experience has helped give your work its cutting edge look and reputation? MR: Having been on the receiving end of mean and aggressive photographers as a model, I told myself that I would always be respectful to my subjects. That has garnered me the reputation of being one of the more pleasant photographers to work with. LM: Any highlights you might want to mention or share about
some of your most exciting celebrity or cutting edge brands Please share some Interesting or funny stories. MR: Having "Prince" call me up on stage at Madison Square Garden and shouting me out in front of a packed house. That was extremely surreal.

LM: How did you end up as an animal advocate? And how and
why Pit Bulls? Was it by plan, accident or fate?
MR: It was totally by accident. I haphazardly met and fell in love with a Pit Bull type dog named Oliver in 2012 and he inspired me to help dogs like him, who have been abused, neglected and discarded like trash. LM: How did you come across your beautiful Pit Bull “Oliver”

MR: The friend that I stay with in Los Angeles was fostering him and on one fateful trip to LA, I walked in the door, he ran up to me, sat at my feet and one look from his big brown soulful eyes told me that I was his person and he was my son. LM: Did you have dogs before Oliver?
MR: I did have dogs throughout my life and I loved them all very deeply but Oliver was my soul mate. The connection I had with him was the most profound I’ve ever had with any human or dog. LM: What happened to Oliver? Is lymphoma a typical disease
for dogs or Pits?

MR: I’m not sure how prevalent Lymphoma is in Pit Bull type dogs but that’s what took Oliver. Since there is no government agency like the FDA for animals, the guidelines are sketchy to say the least and if one doesn’t do extensive research, there are so many food and toy products that are carcinogenic for dogs. For that reason, cancer is very common in dogs. LM: What are some of your most beautiful memories about
your special boy?
MR: Every minute I spent with him. When we were in the same room, he was always by my side and that’s what I will always remember and never recover from the loss of his presence. LM: We would love to showcase some wonderful photos of
you and Oliver. I know we had run some beautiful ones a few years ago but I’d love to see what else you might want to share of the two of you. I’d love to run 4 or 5 pages of your gorgeous images with him as a “Tribute.” We totally loved and love Oliver. We feel that your photo of Oliver in his leather cap is the embodiment of our spirit at Lick Magazine and like you.. we also advocate and love the original and true legacy of Pit Bulls. Since Oliver passed away a few years ago you found and rescued your new Pit Bull Princess “Julia.”

LM: Tell us about Julia.. When, where and how did you come to
find this beautiful little girl?
MR: When Oliver passed, I didn’t think I could emotionally handle another baby to care for, at least not right away. I was wrong. The deafening silence in my house was heartbreaking and I knew that there were so many kids in need out there so I casually started looking on Petfinder just as an exploratory exercise. In no time, I came across Julia’s page and I had that same gut feeling. I immediately scheduled a meet and greet with her amazing Foster mom, Marilyn Forsyth. LM: What’s her story? In the original photo you sent she
looked so stoic but tragic .. nothing but bones and obviously another victim of the planets most dangerous animal.. “man.” Were you looking to rescue a special animal in need! MR: No one knows what she really went through because she was found tied to a pole in Philly, skin and bones with half of her hair missing. She was brought to Philly ACCT where they weren’t sure if she would make it. Thanks to the advocacy of a few volunteers, Julia was kept from being euthanized. She was then rescued by an amazing rescue called TINY MIRACLES and subsequently fostered by the Forsyth family who literally brought her back from the brink of death. They had her for almost a year and turned down many applications because they knew she had to be with the right people in order for her to thrive. I am so grateful to them for accepting our application because Julia is the love of my life. LM: We’re you looking to rescue another Pit Bull because of
your amazingly beautiful experience with Oliver?
MR: A hugely disproportionate amount of Pit Bull type dogs fill shelters. They are, by far , the most discarded type of dog in this country. That is why I focus on helping Pit Bull type dogs. Oliver taught me a lot about his type and it’s devastating to me that they are so misunderstood. LM: Tell us about your first days with Julia and about her
transformation from your first meeting to being the healthy happy dog she is no doubt today.
MR: The first few days were tense and uncertain. She had been through so much and understandably had some trust issues. She would cower in the furthest corner of my basement. That was a sharp contrast from Oliver who was so gregarious the second I brought him home. I wasn’t sure if Julia would be happy with us until someone educated me on the 2 week lock-down which is a crucial period for all dogs to decompress from being thrust into a new and scary situation. Basically, people are supposed to limit the exposure to stimuli like loud places, other dogs, new people etc until they feel comfortable. The recommended time period is 2 weeks but it could take longer depending on the dogs history. Julia came around in no time and now she is the sweetest, most loving little girl you could ever imagine.

But I have to tell you that Oliver (though I never had the honor of meeting him), will always be special to me and very much the spirit of our magazine. Buster Brown Shoes: The original reputation of the American Pit Bull was that of a beloved children’s pet.
“That’s my dog Tige he lives in a shoe, I’m Buster Brown, look for me in there too.”
Richard Outcault created the “Buster Brown” comic strip in 1902. Buster Brown, his girlfriend Mary Jane and Tige their American Pit Bull Dog were famous, so famous that the Buster Brown character with his beloved American Pit Bull Tige were later adopted by the famed Brown Shoe Company in 1904.
Buster Brown Shoes were so well known as a children’s shoe brand and are still sold today (over a hundred years later!).You have to wonder What happened to change the loyal, protective and beloved family dog reputation and image of the American Pit Bull. Did the dog change or did we? 55

The first dog to play Petey in “The Little Rascals” was a dog owned by Harry Lucernay named “Pal”... Ferocious? I think not!

Linda’s mission at her non profit “The Linda Blair World Heart Foundation” in Acton, California is propelled through her first personal Pitbull love experience which is a lifetime love.
It seems like just yesterday.. Lick Magazine was privileged to showcase the amazing award winning actress, sportswoman and animal advocate “Linda Blair,” as our beautiful cover star in Lick Magazine’s first “Rescue & Pitbull Love Edition,” entitled “We are all Winners”.
A Fight Against Prejudice
By far.. still my favorite Lick Edition .. Linda is beautifully featured in a stunning black and white “film noir” cover photo shot by photographer Christopher Amerouso reminiscent of Hollywood’s former glam days. The cover just emanates the love, compassion and bond between animals and humans.
If you ask “why?” We simply need to go back in time to a moment in history when life was kinder and gentler .. a few eras back where the reputation held by dogs called “Pitbulls” was very different from the one that is held and ignorantly promoted today.
This Lick edition, embodies Linda Blair as the unique person she is, having been successful at not one, but multiple careers before mid life. She is truly an inspiring and achieving persona to all. And, her consistent tireless efforts on behalf of animals, has shown a spotlight of her love and dedication, to animals time and time again, from her rescue work to her promotion of animal rights causes and specifically her efforts against blanket banning of "Pitbull" type dogs around the globe (otherwise known as BSL - Breed Specific Legislation).
What is a Pitbull?
In this new Lick “Pitbull Love” edition, we honor our hero "Linda Blair" once again for her continued magnanimous efforts for the cause and dogs she loves.
Linda has been especially active in her fight for animal rights, as animals unfortunately, like people experience unwarranted prejudice because of ignorance and misrepresented facts. The plight of the Pitbull in particular is a story of tragedy.
Well, amazingly the Pitbull is not actually a specific breed of dog but more a specific “look.” The dictionary describes “Pitbull” as a noun. A dog of American variety, a bull terrier mix, a dog of muscular build, a squarish face and close cropped hair. The Pitbull has been described as descended from bull dogs and terriers. Not a specific breed. The Pit is described as a broad spectrum “type of dog.” When we look back in time, we can find the Pitbull as part of the Iconic illustrated colorful logo of the ever popular “Stride Rite” shoes. The logo illustrated a child wearing a broad brimmed straw hat and sporting a buster brown type hairdo alongside a closeup of his faithful Pitbull. This logo was heavily advertised a half century ago and nationally promoted, a popular “American children’s shoe” store. The Pitbull was also the beloved dog of an iconic and wildly beloved children’s TV show that had top ratings, awards and national American viewership. The show featured a group of everyday street kids hanging out on New York City’s lower east side. The lower east side, though the epitome of chic today was known as the “melting pot” of America. It's beginnings featured a mix of immigrants from around the world. This well loved national American kids show, went on to feature a number of spin offs with different cast members as the original cast turned into teens.

The one continuing factor through different show renditions and cast members was the presence of their beloved dog “Petey,” a black and white “Pitbull type dog” with a distinctive black bulls eye ring around one eye.
constant fight for equality through the ages and through the countries of the world. Equality on behalf of people. Equality of one’s sex, sexual preferences, religion, nationality or race has unfortunately been a continual problem for people.
Petey never seemed to age and the kids no matter where their families emanated from across the globe, had the loyal, protective and loving “Petey,” as part of their little troupe or gang, throughout the shows history.
We often judge a person by a characteristic we associate with a "negative past experience," or negative past person or a negative reputation that may or may not be true.
These iconic long lasting black and white television hits were entitled “Spanky and Our Gang” and “The Little Rascals.” If you’re old enough you might remember them with fond memories. I must admit that I still do!! Of course, the show’s kids always got into some sort of soft but sweet mischief .. a TV formula viewers adored and the theme was enjoyed with accolades for years. These shows were some of the most popular and long running TV series of their time and featured the “Pitbull,” as a show constant and dedicated and loyal mascot of the kids. Petey, was adored by the nation and no doubt many families got Pitbulls reminiscent of “Petey” for their children and households as well.
It’s really unfair! But we have "All" been guilty at one time or another, of throwing people into the same proverbial box with others that might have had similar physical attributes but ultimately very different mindsets or behavior. The good news is that we as people and as a society in general are for the most part consciously trying to break free from this destructive pattern and trying to see each person as their unique selves. And this is the path we must travel with animals like "Pitbulls" as well.
When you also look back through the decades, you can also note that in England especially, the Iconic Pitbull was considered the “care giver” and “protector of children.” It was the nanny, the nurse. The Pitbull was the guardian of it's family. And the Pitbull would readily put its own life on the line without thought to protect its human family. Of course, this history was long ago when TV and TV shows were all in black and white and times were simpler. The Internet was nowhere in sight back then and local relationships and community spirit among people was strong. People were connected not separated by society.
So, What happened?
When you think of the word “Pitbull” today, one conjures up a fearless but rather feared animal with a terrible reputation of a fighter, destroyer and as a dog not to be trusted. This is a sad state of affairs and based on these thoughts countless numbers of sweet innocent and loving dogs have been euthanized, not because they present a threat to society, but because they have been "stereotyped" and labeled with prejudice to wear a "one size all" look of a breed that cannot be trusted.
What a different reputation from yesteryear!
Thus, Pitbulls in shelters suffer a terrible fate no matter their demeanor. They are often the first to be put down and the last to be adopted, through no fault of their own.

In America — and across the world people have suffered the same unfair judgement bestowed to Pitbulls. We have had a

each occupant of this planet will make for a most beautiful planet to be shared by all. Love and kindness is the "Mission." Love costs nothing to give and is an extraordinary gift to receive and share. I pray for a world where someday we can feel for the betterment of each life on this planet and fulfill our desires and needs in peace. As when we give love the gift comes back many fold. Our hope, is that humans as the caretakers of this planet, will be more responsible in the care of our planet, it’s resources, it's animals and it’s people. We should not add to the suffering of others, but seek to eliminate the negative and bring light to All. True love and happiness is experiencing the love and joy we exchange with all that share our planet.
That is why ardent advocates like Linda Blair and the “Linda Blair World Heart Foundation,” have dedicated their lives to Stop BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) which just slaps on a label and categorizes every animal of a same look or species to be treated the same and in most cases to be destroyed because they fall into a "breed specific look" or category. This is “Stone Age Thinking” (backwards thinking), that helps no one, especially the innocent dogs that are destroyed each year for no good reason except that they “look” like and may not even be that specific breed. Linda’s work at her Acton, California Rescue, has gone on for many years. And Linda, who could be basking in her celebrity status and the limelight, continues tirelessly with a "hands on" approach to rescue. She houses, cares for and adopts all dogs but especially her beloved Pitbulls. At Lick Magazine, we agree and support and will always support Linda Blair in her philosophy and tireless efforts to save these wonderful dogs. Linda truly lives her beliefs, and her philosophy of love and kindness, in the hopes that someday we as people will be more responsible in our care and treatment of animals — not adding to the suffering that exists in their world and ours. lick spotlight - Zachary Tinkle NASCAR® ARCA Driver Zachary Tinkle Zooms Into Partnership With Grateful Rescue
by Laurren Darr pugs in the household. His former pug Bella accompanied him to race tracks and was even featured in a popular race magazine. Having a sixteen-foot unused trailer, the idea came to Zachary to use it to take supplies to pet shelters and rescues in the cities where he races in this year. Through family friend KJ McGlinn, Kitty Correspondent for Pet Pals TV, Zachary was introduced to Pamela Terhune of Grateful Rescue. As they talked about shared values, they became excited about the “Racing for Rescue Tour.” Zachary resounded, “I’m looking forward to giving back in a way that helps those that have brought happiness to so many with rescued pets.” Grateful is a nationally networked rescue with a partnership with Best Friends Animal Society. It has programs from reading with dogs to helping veterans. Most important is Grateful’s compassionate care of animals at its sixty-acre facility in Muncie, Indiana.
When asked how he got interested in racing.. Zachary Tinkle answers with a chuckle. His mom says that he came out of the womb wanting to race! He started racing go-karts around the age of 10. He’s won championships in go-karting, minicup stock cars, and full size late model cars. All of this was leading up to his goal of competing in the highest ranks of NASCAR® as a professional race car driver. Those dreams came to a screeching halt in the summer of 2021 when his father and main source of funding, Brad Tinkle, had a stroke and the family had to make the painful decision to shut down his late model team. A set of happenstances came together to catapult Zachary into the NASCAR® ARCA series – the national entry level of NASCAR. Fans asked to set up a GoFundMe to keep him racing. Meanwhile, Wayne Peterson heard of Zachary’s circumstances and offered Zachary a seat on his team. One race turned into the rest of the season with Wayne as owner and/or crew chief. Now, Zachary has a goal of racing the full 2022 season with the series. His father is still recovering, but is now able to work.
When asked to comment, Terhune said, “We at Grateful Rescue and Sanctuary are so honored to join Zachary in the Racing to the Rescue Program. We share the same heart when it comes to animals and love of racing and we applaud and appreciate the Tinkle team for extending such generosity to our furry friends in need all over the country.” Plans are to take supplies around the following races: Daytona (February), Mid-Ohio (July), Lucas Oil IRP (July), Springfield (August), Salem (October). More dates can be added as support allows.
In the midst of all this happening, the family had many talks about how, even though they had an unfortunate incident, they were blessed and humbled by the outpouring of support. This led them to ponder how they could use the resources they had to help others. Pets have always been a big part of Zachary’s life, having had multiple rescue 65

Recognize Obesity as a Disease
Many years ago, the World Health Organization (WHO), Center for Disease Control (CDC) and American Medication Association (AMA) declared obesity a disease in humans. By doing so, this accelerated innovation and treatments to the point that there are now tens of drugs and innumerable bariatric surgeries available. Sadly though, there are no approved obesity treatments in the United States for our pets. Pharmacology won’t develop a drug to help dogs loose poundage because obesity or being over-weight is not considered a disease.
According to the Association of Animal Hospitals, obesity leads to:
Reduced life expectancy and diminished quality of life Skin disorders Chronic inflammation Orthopedic disease Cancer Kidney dysfunction Respiratory disorders Metabolic endocrine disorders (i.e. diabetes)
Does Obesity Adversely Affect a Dog’s Quality of Life?
YES! Ernie Ward, DVM, and the author of “Chow Hounds: Why Our Dogs are Getting Fatter, A Vet’s Plan to Save Their Lives,” and other books and papers, says, “I believe many pet parents are skeptical about the health benefits that come from their dog losing weight. They feel, ‘So what if Fluffy has packed on a few extra pounds? She’s happy. and I want her to enjoy whatever years she has remaining,’ but they are actually accelerating the demise of their beloved pet.” Ward’s colleague, Alexander J. German, BVSc PhD, of the University at Liverpool, has been looking at obesity vs. quality of life effects on dogs for decades, and believes that as little as a 6% weight loss shows demonstrable improvements in the pet’s quality of life. When people have a dog with obesity, they see a big dog, an NFL linebacker or goalie for the hockey team, but veterinarians see a dog with obesity. Extra fat means inflammation in the body, so to help your dog of any age live a longer, pain-free, disease-free life it is important to maintain a healthy body condition. According to Ward, “Of all things you do for your dog, keep blood sugar stable cause spikes in sugar trigger an inflammatory cascade of adipose (fat) tissue.”
A 14-year Purina lifetime study monitored two colonies of Labradors from puppy hood until death, feeding the control group normal calories and the others, 25% fewer calories. On average, the dogs eating less calories lived 2 years longer, to age 13. That is the difference between humans making it to 79 or 91 years of age! We’re not talking deprivation, just feeding a little bit less. Think ¾ cup instead of that full cup. What Can a Pet Parent Do?
Says Ward, “Discuss your pet’s weight, body condition, food and feeding habits with your veterinarian, but have him rule out any medical conditions that could be causing increased weight. Medical conditions like hypothyroidism and Cushing’s can cause weight gain while medications for seizures and steroids for allergies are notorious for fat accumulation.” Discuss mobility restrictions too. If your dog blew out his cruciate ligament, this factors in to how to construct and formulate the best weight loss program. Also share with your vet your own abilities, lifestyle, commitment, and motivation to help your dog lose the weight he should. As far as exact numbers, remember that every dog is a unique individual, so all of the above should be discussed

with your veterinarian who can determine your dog’s goal weight, number of proteins vs fiber vs fat that he should consume daily. Tools exist to help you approximate daily caloric needs for the average pooch. If your dog has been spayed or neutered however, he or she will require a 2030% reduction in calories since their energy requirements have been diminished by not going through cycles and no longer a need to nourish tissues that have been removed. Says Ward, “With 95% certainty, I can predict that weight gain will occur in most pets around 9 months of age since most get altered at 6 months and their caloric intake is not decreased.” As a very basic guideline for average lightly-active, adult spayed or neutered dogs: 10 lbs. dog should consume
200-275 calories daily

700-900 calories
90 lbs. dog

But to lose weight, approximately 80% of those calories should be consumed and close to 30% should be protein. Move slow, or in Dr. Ward’s words, “Step down the weight. Determine a conservative monthly weight loss of 3-5%, so a 90 lbs. Labrador, who ideally should weigh 75 lbs., should lose no more than 3-5 lbs. per month and will take about 4 months to achieve goal.” Your dog will pester and beg if you cut calories too drastically. Adds Ward, “Never reduce calories below 70% of your dog’s RER (Resting Energy Requirements) as you can run the risk of nutritional deficiencies.” As for the best food to feed, “There is no perfect food for every dog cause all dogs are individuals,” Ward chimes in. “Find what your dog likes. If he won’t eat it, it won’t help him. Also find a food you like and that has a low caloric density (less than 350 kcals/cup) with higher protein and fiber.” Keep in mind that it must be convenient for your lifestyle as convenience equates to consistency, so you will be more likely to stick with the routine for your dog’s sake. Ward cautions though, to reassess at 90 days, and if you’re not getting demonstrable improvement, talk to your vet and switch it up. Also, treat no more than 10% of daily calories, but less during weight loss. And make those treats functional: the tasty supplement your pooch needs for joint health or for skin and coat; crunchy veggies that provide satiety (cucumbers, zucchini, broccoli, carrots) not formulated to provide all the fats, carbs and micronutrients for a canine diet.
Dr. Ward’s predictors of success are: You diligently keep at least a 1-week feeding and activity log. Pet parents have the best of intentions but often fail without a strict regimen.
Weigh the food as a measuring cup of kibble can vary by 10% so
feeding as few as 10 extra pieces of kibble daily can cause weight gain.
Talk with your pet about what aerobic activity your dog can do
daily. 30 minutes a day, walk or play. Swimming might be best for canines with joint issues. Your motivation to make a difference.
A final recommendation of Dr. Ward’s is fitness feeding. “Rotate food puzzles to keep your dog mentally stimulated and engaged, which is particularly important when they are seniors. Make them ‘learn to earn’ by making your dog do a ‘sit’ or ‘down stay.’ It becomes a learning opportunity, so your dog gets a two-fer. You can even make your dog find the food by splitting it up in bowls in different rooms, using a snuffle mat or hiding kibble under a blanket.” Make it fun, but make sure what you are feeding is not ‘extra,’ but rather part of your dog’s daily calorie allowance. It isn’t just about how your best friend looks, it’s about how he feels, and the inflammation and other problems exacerbated by fat. Do your best to keep your senior dog, or dog of any age, as close to his ideal weight as possible for a longer, healthier life by your side! Little did I know it at the time, but Costa Rica was going to be my last international trip for a long while. I went in February of 2020 not aware of the seriousness of the pandemic until I got home near the end of that month - just a couple weeks before everything was in lock-down. Costa Rica is home to countless species of stunning birds, reptiles and mammals, as well as spectacular scenery, so it was an easy choice to share more images from this trip... Until my next one!

Tribute for Haiku, My Dream Come True! On August 31st, my constant companion and best pal, Haiku the Chikita (Chow-Akita mix), became an angel. We had spent his entire 15 years on this planet together except for the first 6 weeks which are a mystery since he was found wandering the California desert as a tiny pup. During that time, we created a bond that will last beyond his lifetime since Haiku truly lived his canine life to the fullest: dipping paws in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, scenting in 14 U.S. states, indulging in room service at hotels from the Pacific Palisades to Myrtle Beach, helping me demonstrate pet first aid techniques at conferences, on television and for magazine photo shoots as well as serving as a pet product tester for my blog. Haiku had his picture taken by Lassie’s Star on the Walk of Fame and in front of the Hollywood Sign. He explored the ‘bat caves,’ made famous in the 1960s “Batman” TV Show, and wet his whistle in the famous Cafe Lafitte in Exile after a long walk through New Orleans’ French Quarter. Foremost, Haiku got to be a dog, running, playing, eating, resting, chasing and barking. He met other creatures along the way: horses, a tortoise, an owl, bunnies, cats,
crows and a rattlesnake up close (but not too close like his sister did) and had the joy of being the baby brother to two older canines. He seemed to flourish in later years being doted upon as the only child, each experience connecting us more deeply. I strongly feel that seeing sights, tasting flavors, sniffing scents and other ongoing mental stimulation was key to my best buddy remaining in the moment for more than 15 years (that’s 95 to us humans). A highlight that melted my heart, occurred at an outdoor restaurant during Haiku’s first stay at a hotel. A young boy came up to my best buddy asking if he could pet him. When I responded in the affirmative, the boy touched Haiku’s soft fur and exclaimed, “He’s my dream come true.” What an incredible thing for anyone to say about another being! Nothing could make me prouder of giving my best buddy a life well lived. I miss him terribly, but hope he’s getting plenty of belly rubs and pumpkin cookies wherever he is until I can once again provide those things for him along with a great big kiss on his nose.

Pet Memorial Pebbles
Pebbles was my sweet and loving rescue whom I fell in love with the first day she arrived with a group of kittens that I volunteered to foster.When it was time for everyone to go out for adoptions I just couldn’t let go of her. I learned from the rescue group who brought her from a shelter, that she had been very ill and nursed back to health to get ready for adoption. I was also told she was FIV positive. Since she was so gentle, I didn’t see any risk for another cat to live with her. So I kept my plans to add a new kitten a couple months later and Pebbles became like a “mom” to Marula - my new kitten. After only two years, Pebbles’ health declined suddenly and we learned her FIV was out of control. With no hope for recovery, she was put to sleep at home with Marula by her side. They were inseparable and I was sad not only for the loss of Pebbles, but for Marula’s loss of her best companion. Pebbles is always in our hearts.
