Abstract Acrylics and Collage This course features a combination of two very beautiful and expressive media in fine art: abstract painting, with acrylics in this case, and collage (coming from the French word for glue). These two complementary processes produce dynamic results together—the abstract painting is emotional and free, celebrating pure design and the beauty of color, shape and line. And the collage adds edge and structure and maybe contrast through the cutting and pasting aspect. The acrylic paint is water-soluble and versatile, and sticks the whole thing together, easily creating various textures on the surface of the work at the same time. The process for the classes includes generating concepts for each project, group discussions, critiques and sharing information, demonstrations, and about four projects, each taking two to three class sessions to complete. No homework unless you want to do it. See www.learnatnorth.org for supply list. 24833 4/9/2022 - 6/11/2022 10:00AM - 1:00PM 10 ses Sa Paquette CC Bldg; Room 1254B $275

ARTS Lisa Myers Bulmash Lisa is a collage and book artist who works primarily in acrylics, paper and found objects. Informally trained, Lisa began her career making handmade cards. After her father’s death in 2006, she felt compelled to take more personal risks in her creative life. Questions of identity, trust and the imperfect memory now drive most of her work. Lisa aims to nudge the viewer into recognizing our shared stories, especially those narratives that are usually experienced in isolation. Her collage work resides in three municipal art collections: Seattle, Shoreline and the Seattle Public Library’s Special Collections. She has also been awarded grants from the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation and other arts benefactors. Her work and commentary have been highlighted in five books as well. Lisa exhibits her work in group and solo shows throughout the Seattle metro area.

Jazz and the Visual Arts: Painting Music Jazz had an incredible impact on the visual arts during the twentieth century. Delighting in the jazz performances of the Albert Ammons Trio directly influenced Piet Mondian’s painting “Broadway Boogie Woogie.” Through listening to the various styles of jazz as we examine representative art, we will explore the parallels and connections between the two modernist forms. Starting with a brief discussion of the collaboration between Wassily Kandinsky and his theories of sound and color and Arnold Schoenberg and his modernist atonal music, we will progress to the development of the basic styles of jazz including ragtime and blues and proceed to New Orleans Dixieland, Swing, Bebop and Fusion, as we identify similar aspects of American and European Abstract painting. Included will be jazz greats from Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong to Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane; as well as the contributions of George and Ira Gershwin and Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Artists include Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Deborah Remington, Norman Lewis, Alma Thomas, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Stuart Davis and Romare Bearden. American modern artist Abraham Walkowitz, a contemporary of photographer Alfred Stieglitz, said, “Abstract art is a universal language, and dwells in the realm of music with equivalent emotion. Its melody is attuned to the receptive eye as music is to the ear.” In the course of our six week journey together, we will swing to the “Fascinating Rhythm” of music and art. 22456 4/18/2022 - 5/23/2022 6:30 - 8:30PM 6 ses M John Online; Zoom $129

How to Be an Anti-Racist

She is a Women’s Studies professor, writer, poet and musician, drummer and editor for Tom Tom Magazine. She is an international speaker in women’s history and was recently an invited guest to Sweden’s Ingmar Bergman Film Festival.

Women and Mythology Ushered into the mainstream by Joseph Campbell, mythic narratives have the power to enliven and enrich our day-to-day experiences and dreams. Come journey to the African crossroads, learn about Greek goddesses, gather around for a folktale, watch a film by Maya Deren, sit in Frida Kahlo’s garden or be mesmerized by mystic poets. We will explore the literary, psychological, spiritual and cultural significance of an array of female-centric mythological narratives, images and historical persons. Each class focuses on storytelling as personal inspiration for writing and/or artwork. Bodywork, collage, music, meditation and optional group presentation will be explored. Understanding Trauma Through lecture, discussion and group interaction, students will gain a greater understanding of what trauma is and how it affects people, including their behaviors, thought processes and feelings. This will include viewing trauma in the short, intermediate and long terms. Much of the generally available information on trauma is misleading and simply inaccurate, so this course will provide a concrete definition of trauma and its different levels (i.e. the trauma continuum). Well look at the interventions, therapies and support that will most likely help persons impacted by trauma, and the potential limitations and risks with those efforts. We’ll address issues such as: symptom management versus healing, the role of diagnosis and advanced topics of cultural and intergenerational trauma. One outcome of the course is for registrants to more fully understand what it means for a practice or an organization to be truly “trauma-informed.” 16165 4/21/2022 - 5/26/2022 6:30 - 8:30PM 6 ses Th Sideman Online; Zoom $175

You already know of Dr. Ibram Kendi’s bestselling book How to Be an Antiracist. Dr. Kendi also wrote a board book for parents called Antiracist Baby. It is a deceptively simple rhyming book with nine steps to make equity a reality. We will focus on each step in turn. Please purchase both books by Ibram Kendi: Antiracist Baby and How to Be an Antiracist. We will be journaling in and out of class, so please have a dedicated journal for the class. “Antiracist baby is bred, not born. Antiracist baby is raised to make society transform.” See www.learnatnorth.org for textbook information. 15067 4/13/2022 - 5/11/2022 5:30 - 7:00PM 5 ses W Chang Online; Zoom $79
